A 155 kilométer hosszú berlini fal a Nyugat-Berlint körülvevő határépítmény volt Kelet-Berlin és az NDK területén. 1961 és 1989 között létezett, hogy ne tudjanak átszökni a kelet-németek nyugatra. A hidegháború alatt a kettéosztott Berlin Európa megosztottságának és az elnyomásnak egyik fő szimbólumává vált. 1961. augusztus 13-án szögesdróttal választották el Berlin keleti és nyugati felét, Walter Ulbrich kelet-német politikus indítványa alapján. Ezt a szögesdrótot váltotta fel később a betonból épült és védelmi zónákkal határolt fal. Létezésének szűk három évtizede alatt a fal egyre kifinomultabb, az átjutást szinte teljesen lehetetlenné tevő határzárrá alakult át. Számos szökési kísérlet végződött a menekülők halálával.
A fal 1989-es leomlása a hidegháború befejeződésének emblematikus dátumává változott. 1989. november 9-én a berlini fal leomlása után, Helmut Kohl kancellár előterjesztett egy tízpontos programot a két Németország egyesítésére. A máltai csúcsértekezleten elfogadták a tervet, s a hidegháború ezzel befejeződött. A létesítmény legnagyobb részét a két német állam egyesülése után lebontották, napjainkban már csak egyes szakaszai láthatóak A Checkpoint Charlie a leghíresebb katonai ellenőrzőpont volt a vasfüggöny berlini szakaszán. A Berlin szovjet szektorába eső Mitte, és az amerikai szektorba eső Kreuzberg kerületeket összekötő Friedrichstraße és az azt metsző, a szektorhatáron futó Zimmerstraße kereszteződésétől pár méterre délre, az amerikai szektor területén állt szolgálatban 1945 és 1990 között. The Berlin Wall was a wall that separated the city of Berlin in Germany from 1961 to 1989. It separated the Eastern half from the Western half. Many people thought it was a symbol of the Cold War. The Berlin Wall was about 155 km long: it was built to prevent people from escaping from the Eastern half of Berlin. Lot of people died here, who wanted to cross the wall. The fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989, was a pivotal event in world history which marked the falling of the Iron Curtain and the start of the fall of communism in Eastern and Central Europe. The fall of the inner German border took place shortly afterwards. An end to the Cold War was declared at the Malta Summit three weeks later, and the reunification of Germany took place during the following year. The best-know crossing point of East and West Berlin was Checkpoint Charlie (the name was given by the Western Allies), during the Cold War (1947–1991). East German leader Walter Ulbricht agitated and maneuvered to get the Soviet Union's permission to construct the Berlin Wall in 1961 to stop emigration and defection westward through the Border system, preventing escape across the city sector border from East Berlin into West Berlin. Checkpoint Charlie became a symbol of the Cold War, representing the separation of East and West. Soviet and American tanks briefly faced each other at the location during the Berlin Crisis of 1961. After the dissolution of the Eastern Bloc and the reunification of Germany, the building at Checkpoint Charlie became a tourist attraction as like as the East Side Gallery, which once was the Berlin Wall, now it’s the longest open-air gallery in the world. At 1316 metres long, the open-air art gallery on the banks of the Spree in Friedrichshain is still in existence. Immediately after the wall came down, 118 artists from 21 countries began painting the East Side Gallery, and it officially opened as an open air gallery on 28 September 1990.
