Nestled in the hills to the east of Funchal, Casa Velha do Palheiro is situated just 7 km from the centre of Funchal and 15 km from the airport. The hotel is bordered by the renowned Palheiro Gardens and the championship Palheiro Golf Course – which has been included in the "TOP 200 Golf Courses in Continental Europe" by Golf World magazine. Casa Velha do Palheiro was built in the early 19th Century as a hunting lodge for the Count of Carvalhal and was bought in 1885 by John Burden Blandy. The Casa Velha (“Old House”) was restored in 1996 and opened on 1st May 1997 as one of Madeira’s first 5-star Country House Hotels. The hotel is now a part of Palheiro Nature Estate. Since its acquisition by the Blandy family in 1885, successive generations have managed the transition from traditional farming to leisure-based activities. The names of Blandy and Palheiro are synonymous with quality on Madeira Island and beyond.
