Duhallow Makes An Impact All Over

Discover

Duhallow received an image via email by a Mr. Bob Barry. It is a picture of a notice featured in a Belfast Newsletter from 6th January 1898, pertaining to two recently deceased centenarians in the United Kingdom. Both the individuals, John Linehan and Julia Clancy originally hailed from Duhallow.

With a legacy such as John’s with 60 great grand children, we can’t help but wonder if relatives remain in the region even now.

It’s a fascinating glimpse into the lives of two Duhallow natives so far from our time and place.

Thank you, Bob for your fascinating submission!

Banteer

Community Training

Banteer, Lyre & Nadd Community Council, in association with Donoughmore Community First Responders, is organising training on CPR, use of an AED, choking, chest pain and basic first aid. Training will take place at Banteer Community Centre on Wednesday April 24th, 6.30-8.30 pm. There is a contribution of €10 per person, to be paid on the night. If interested, please contact one of the following in your area: Patrick Buckley 087 2306907, Patrick Barry 0861960780, Eleanor Duggan 086 8241425, Morna Kerr 086 8164432, Rosie Healy 083 1180299, or Orla O Shea 087 1201306

Banteer Lyre Nadd and Districts Community Council welcome funding of 30,000 euros under the ORIS programme announced last week. ORIS builds on the commitment under the National Outdoor Recreation Strategy 2023 - 2027 which is set to shape the future of outdoor recreation over the next five years.

The funding is for the development/improvement of the existing Glen River walk kindly facilitated by the O’Keeffe family Duinch.

The National Strategy aims to increase the number of people active in the outdoors, especially young people and under-represented groups, and to foster a greater understanding of how to enjoy the outdoors responsibly.

Eddie Dunbar Back In Action Again

Now fully recovered from the hand injury he suffered at the UAE Tour, Eddie Dunbar returned to action on Mon last with his Jayco AlUla team. The Cork man lined out in the GP Miguel Indurain in Spain, and will progress to stage race action immediately.

Dunbar hit the deck during the sprint at the end of stage one of the UAE Tour. An erratic sweep to the right by some riders saw fellow Irishman Ryan Mullen (Bora-hansgrohe) and Gianluca Pollefliet (Decathlon Ag2r La Mondiale) crash, with that in turn causing a chain reaction which downed perhaps 20 others.

Dunbar injured his right hand and was taken to hospital, where a fracture to a bone was diagnosed.

Further examinations revealed that the bone was bruised rather than fractured and while Dunbar still used an indoor trainer for several weeks, he didn’t require an operation.

Banteer And Area Water Supply Update

Email received; “For information Uisce Eireann assumed responsibility for water services as of 2023. Cork Co Co no longer manage or direct water services other than the support the transition of water service staff.

Forward Planning unit of UÉ has advise as previously that Uisce Éireann propose to provide treated water storage for the Banteer Water Supply Zone. The next stages of the project involve the delivery of the detailed design process, submission of the associated planning application and subsequent delivery of the works construction. Uisce Éireann currently anticipate (subject to statutory approvals and funding availability) the commencement of construction works in 2026, with the works currently expected to be substantially completed in 2027.

As such the progress of Banteer is against the background of other UÉ capital project demands across the county with priority given to where service is most critical. Capital projects such as this follow predefined stage processes in accordance with the public spending code, procurement and environment & planning legislation. As such the timelines for delivery can be protracted.

That being said you have also sought interim measures. To this end there is ongoing engagement with ESBN as to required pump power provision where a progress update is scheduled by end of March followed by UÉ internal approvals including finance review and settlement of invoices etc.

We would also highlight that as a phase 1 to works in Banteer we interconnected to Ballinatona at Ballymaquirke/Ducon concrete, so there is an operational option to feed from Ballinatona in the event of any outage thus reducing the risk of network distributions outages in Banteer”

A new 6 inch rising main was installed in 2023 from Banteer to the Derry Rerservoir with the intention of pumping water to the Derry reservoir and a new 4 inch distribution main was installed also from the Derry Reservoir to supply Banteer and Duinch, Gouganes. However a new pump needed just above Banteer on the Nadd road has not been installed yet. It was due to be installed in Aug 2023 but is being delayed waiting for a power supply by Irish Water from ESB networks. It is understood that no application for the new supply had been received by ESB Networks as of last week. This system with some additional temporary water storage at Derry reservoir would give a fully operational temporary supply system and avoid further outages. Further information has been requested on the above information received from Ben Coffey Irish Water Customer Service Advisor in Irish Water and Daragh Quill Water Services Cork County Council.

Kanturk Men’s Shed Opens Doors to New Home

Kanturk Men’s Shed finally got the keys to their new premises for the forseeable future, Kanturk’s old Fire Station CK23. This building served the town and local community since 1956 until it closed in 2022, due to the opening of the new station on Percival Street. Laying idle, it was put up for tender to local groups in 2023 and thankfully Cork County Council saw Kanturk Men’s Shed as suitable candidates to take it on.

Thank you to Councillor Bernard Moyninan, with a symbolic gesture, handed over the keys to the Men’s Shed members and let them into the clubs new home. Congratulations to the Men’s Shed for the success in their journey so far. Now the Men’s Shed faces the task of restoring the building to its former glory. Best wishes in getting the building up to scratch in the coming weeks and months, and may their new home be a testament to the power of community spirit.

Freemount’s Mr. Personality

Freemount Macra will be represented for the second year running at the Macra Mr. Personality Festival being held in Clonmel on the 5th and 6th of April. Proud Freemount Macra member, David Cronin is this years Mr. Avondhu.

David Cronin is 1 of 26 boys from around Ireland who will take part in this iconic festival in the hope of being crowned the Macra Mr. Personality for 2024.

Last year’s Mr. Avondhu, John O’ Connell, was also a Freemount Macra member. John was definitely one of the stars of last years competition and is now very well known in Macra circles throughout Ireland. Since last years festival, John has gone on to win the very prestigious Escort of the Year award at the 2023 Queen of the Land festival and more recently, placed second in the Stag of Avondhu competition held in January. John is very confident that this years Mr. Avondhu can go all the way and claim the top prize at this years festival.

David has been a dedicated member of Freemount Macra for the past year.

Born in Dunmanway, David grew up in the very picturesque countryside of West Cork but

decided to leave his hometown and move to Kanturk 18 months ago to live with his girlfriend Nicole. Eager to make new friends, get involved in the local community and having a keen interest in everything farming, David joined Freemount Macra.

Since becoming a member, David has been heavily involved in the club. He has taken part in the Farm Skills competition, Mastermind, impromptu pubic speaking, and is currently a valuable asset to the Freemount Macra set dancing group who have impressed judges and audiences in Shanballymore and Aghada recently, and will compete in the finals of the Macra National Talent Competition in May.

Aside from Macra, some of his other hobbies include shooting, hiking, GAA and drama – he recently participated in the One Act All Ireland Series and won the Cork arts festival in the Cork Arts Theatre. No stranger to the stage, David has already worked his magic in both the Avondhu and Cork county Mr. Personality rounds with his comical story about the “Tea Man”.

Growing up, David always had a great love of farming and decided

to pursue his interest further post Leaving Cert by studying Agricultural Science in MTU Kerry, where he also caught the eye of his girlfriend Nicole. Now equipped with a Level 8 Degree in Agricultural Science, David spends Monday to Friday working as a knowledgeable salesman for an animal feeds company based in Killavullen.

Everyone from the Avondhu Macra region and members of Freemount Macra especially want to wish David the very best of luck at this years Mr. Personality festival.

We are in no doubt that this years Mr. Avondhu will represent his club and region brilliantly.

Spring into Action: Kanturk’s Community Market Blooms with Easter Fun

Kanturk and District Community Council brought a burst of springtime cheer by holding a Spring Market in the Edel Quinn Hall on Sunday March 24th. The hall was filled with the vibrant colours and scents of spring, local crafters and producers came together to showcase their crafts and wares, offering a unique shopping experience to all who attended. The Easter Bunny also paid a visit, handing out eggs to the children, bringing the Easter Season into full spring. A raffle and a few guessing games were held and sponsored by Yumm Café. Guess how many sweets in the Jar had everyone counting and recounting. Guess the Bunny’s name was a hit among the children and adults alike, with the winner receiving an Easter hamper. Guess the weight of the Cake was a delicious challenge that had participants weighing their options.

The market was an amazing opportunity for the community to come together, celebrate local talent, and enjoy the season. A testament to the council’s commitment to fostering a strong community spirit and supporting local enterprise. Thank you to Yumm Café for sponsoring the event, The Easter Bunny for paying a visit, all of the stall holders and a big thanks to all the people who attended and supported the event.

RELOVE YOUR USED PAINT

IRD Duhallow’s award winning furniture revamp has been producing Recycled paint in conjunction with Cork County council since May 2022. Since then, we have sold almost 3000 litres to people in the community and over 1000 litres donated to communities in our locality.

It is now for sale in our retail area as Relove Paint for €15 for 5 litre buckets.

The procedure starts with Revamp collecting used water based paints from the civic amenity sites in Kanturk, Millstreet and Macroom. Then we bring them back to our new paint workshop where a mixing process takes place, a tuition on the mixing process was delivered by The Rediscovery Centre in Dublin through training days both in Dublin and here in Revamp, and facilitated by the Paint Reuse Network Ireland. Our enterprise is now up and running and is fully experienced in filtering, remixing, recolouring, and repackaging the paint, and is producing a high-

quality paint to sell within our local communities.

The Paint initiative, which is part funded by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Local Authority. The EPA and Council funding has allowed for some set-up costs, of a paint reuse and upcycling system in our social enterprise, as well as the training of staff.

Paints are collected at civic amenity sites annually and are generally exported for treatment. Approximately 60% of this waste paint is water based, much of which could be reused and upcycled.

Paint is a problem waste stream in Ireland. In Cork city and county,

up to 190 ton of waste paint is collected at local authority civic amenity sites annually and is generally exported for treatment at a cost to both councils but also potentially to the environment.

There is potential for the integration of circular principles into almost every aspect of production and consumption and the Relove Paint example demonstrates that delivering a circular economy can have positive environmental, economic and social impact on our local area. IRD Duhallow are leading the way in promoting the circular economy in our rural community.

PAINT THIS SPRING

There is a long way to go, and large business and industry has a huge role to play in terms of product design, green procurement and minimising waste. That said, we cannot underestimate the part that we can all play in driving the shift to a circular economy through our own choices and demands for sustainable services and products As well as helping to protect our environment by using paint from this project in your homes

and businesses, you will be supporting our social enterprises who epitomize the circular economy at its very best. IRD Duhallow Furniture Revamp will also deliver for the local economy in terms of job creation and reducing the costs for individuals, community groups and businesses who are using the paint.

Along with IRD Duhallow Furniture Revamp putting almost 300 ton of recycled furniture into the circular economy in the Duhallow region ReLove paint is a great example of circular production, which will be a reallife circular economy initiative that delivers environmentally, socially and economically in the Duhallow region.

Kanturk Choral Concert

An enchanting evening of music is in store for spectators as songs and hymns will be sung by Duhallow Choral Society in the Edel Quinn Hall on Saturday April 20th. Special guests, Wicklow Male Voice Choir as well as Sheila Fitzgerald will have a place in the spotlight.

Becky Kealy, Vice Chair of Kanturk & District Community Council said “We are really excited about this event and we are very grateful to Duhallow Choral Society for coming up with the idea of holding a concert to help us raise Funds for the hall”. “As a new committee of just over a year old we have achieved so much, we bought the accounts of KDCC up to date, we repaired a damaged section of the EQH roof & we were responsible for the replacement of all the electrical works in the Hall. We are currently in the process of getting new safety doors fitted”.

But, Chairman Gerry Greaney informs us “There is a lot more work to be done!” with hopes of roof replacement, heating, and a fresh coat of paint. The group have applied for grants to help with their endeavours to modernise the hall but they fall short in the region of ~150k.

Ideas for fundraising this restoration are welcome. Tickets for this event are on sale through the Kanturk and District Community Facebook page, or from any member of Kanturk Community Council. Alternatively Call Gerry Greaney on 087-2307382 or Becky Kealy at 086-0760180 to secure your tickets.

Your Mind Matters!

How you think and what you think matters more than we realise, and more and more we are understanding the power of our own mindset. Just like our ever changing and challenging Irish weather, our reactions to our thoughts can really make a difference to our mental pathways.

“Soft day thank God “ an old disappearing sentence that recognised the weather, yet added gratitude and took the sting out of the probable continual, yet soft, rain that day.

In these fast paced times, taking that pause to notice how you are feeling, and to open to something

that brings you gratitude can really begin to sow seeds of positive thoughts, your thoughts become feelings. Instead of focusing on the rain clouds, you will begin to see the daffodils, standing shining with their yellow happy petals or honing in to hear the birds chirping as they build their spring nests, and just maybe, maybe allowing the sunshine to peep through the clouds.

Here in New Leaf, we have some effective supplements which can give you a boost by lowering your cortisol levels and reducing stress, some very popular ones include ashwagandha, rhodiola, l-theanine and lemon balm. Probiotics may also help. There is an increasing body of research linking gut health with mental health. For a long time doctors thought that anxiety and

depression were a cause of gut problems, but new studies show that it may also be the other way around.

This month our in-house hypnotherapist, Irene Ryan, is offering a free information evening on Hypnotherapy which will entail insights as to the benefits of this therapy but also how it works, some demonstrations on the night and a deep guided relaxation to bring your own thinking machine back into calm and ease, ready to face whatever your next day brings!

Go With The Flow

To be a four year old again would be a wonderful thing. Children have a great knack of getting lost in their own worlds, we know that when we call them or interrupt their play, they can be unresponsive, often not even hearing or heeding us, they are so immersed in their own world. Also, having a conversation with a child can be a challenge when they tell us about their play, the characters, the scenarios, the stories- all making perfect sense to them- can be quite a challenge to keep up with.

There’s a term for what the child is doing; being in the flow state, a mental state where a person is completely focused

on a single task or activity. All attention is directed at this one task, eliminating all other thoughts, stresses or worries. Children may not have too many stresses or worries, but we do. So, as adults we could benefit hugely from being in a flow state. Whatever that might look like for you- running, gardening, crafting, knitting- the kind of activity where time has no meaning because you’re immersed in what you are doing. So, if you’re lucky enough to have found your flow activity, how do you benefit from it?

• A good sense of concentration means you can be focused without distraction, meaning greater out-put or results.

• Being in this flow state is a very positive experience. The pleasure that comes from being present in the moment

is highly rewarding and brings huge psychological benefits.

• The thoughts, feeling and worries that often cloud our experiences can be eliminated while we are in the flow state, therefore giving us a much needed respite.

• The feeling of happiness that arises from being in the flow state lasts long after the activity is finished. A general sense of well-being can be felt for many days afterwards. So, to get into this flow state is easy. You need to care about the activity. It needs to be an activity that is not too easy, it should be challenging enough to need effort. Lastly, your mind-set needs to be focused on the journey not the destination, in other words, enjoy the ride.

Divine Mercy Sunday - Feast of Divine Mercy.

The greatest gift and the most important message that God has given mankind in these modern times is the gift of His Divine Mercy.

Jesus wants the whole of Creation to know of His great love and unfathomable mercy. He wants us all to seek His mercy so that we can have eternal joy with Him in Heaven.

He gave the task of letting the world know about His great mercy to Saint Faustina. During the last four years of her short life, Jesus asked her to keep a diary. In this diary, “Divine Mercy in My Soul”, she reveals the enormous depth of spiritual encounters of her soul with Jesus and her mission to spread God’s mercy to the world.

On 22 February, 1931, Jesus, dressed in a white robe, appeared to St. Faustina and asked her to paint the image she had been shown with the signature, “Jesus I trust in You.” Jesus had His right hand raised in blessing, with the other touching His breast. From the opening in the garment at the breast came forth red and pale rays. Later Jesus explained to her, “The pale rays stand for the water which makes souls righteous and the red rays stand for the blood which is the life of souls. These rays issued forth from the depths of My most tender mercy at that moment when My agonizing Heart was opened by a lance on the Cross.” The image is the victory of His Resurrection. The Water symbolises Confession and the cleansing of the soul and the Blood is the Eucharist and symbolises the renewal of the soul.

The Feast of Divine Mercy

In her Diary entry 699, Jesus gives St. Faustina specific instructions about the Feast of

Divine Mercy. He asks that the feast be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter.

Jesus wants that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls. You should go to confession and your soul must be in a state of grace when you receive Holy Communion.

The great promise on the Feast of Divine Mercy is that the soul will be cleansed of all sins and all punishment due to sin. This extraordinary grace promised by Jesus in connection with the Feast of Mercy is far greater than a plenary indulgence. It is complete cleansing of the soul similar to a second baptism.

The Importance of the Chaplet of Mercy for the Dying

Jesus tells St. Faustina that when the chaplet is said in the presence of the dying, He will stand between His Father and the dying person, “not as a judge but as a merciful Saviour”. It is recommended to sinners as the last hope of salvation. Even if a hardened sinner were to recite this chaplet only once, he would receive grace from His infinite mercy. St. Faustina spent much of her life praying and offering her sufferings for our conversion. Her experience of visiting Hell and Purgatory made her very conscious of the need to pray for the holy souls and those close to death and in need of God’s mercy.

Conversion prayer

“O blood and water, which gushed forth from the heart of Jesus as a fount of mercy for us, I trust in you.”

Pray this prayer any time but especially at 3 o clock, the hour of great mercy.

The Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Begin with; one Our Father; one

Hail Mary and The Apostles Creed. On the large beads say; Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.

On the ten small beads say; for the sake of His sorrowful passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

At the end of 5 decades say; “Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world” three times.

“Jesus I trust in you” three times Jesus promised that through this chaplet of Divine Mercy you will obtain everything, if what you ask for is compatible with My will.

Prayer of Consecration to the Divine Mercy

Jesus, the Divine Mercy, I consecrate my entire life, from this day on, to You without reserve. Into Your hands I abandon my past, my present and my future, from this day forward, make me a true follower of your teaching, let your Divine Mercy image protect my home and my family from all the powers of evil in this world today. May all who venerate it never perish, may it be their joy in life, their hope in death, and their glory in eternity. Amen.

The Girl Can’t Help It

Tadhg finally gives his thoughts on the 2023 cultural event known as ‘Barbenheimer’ which saw two movies – Barbie and Oppenheimer – released simultaneously. Concluding with Greta Gerwig’s Barbie (2023), was it worth the hype?

2023 was indeed the year of ‘Barbenheimer’. The memes were plentiful. Heck, we even got some great music. But it was comical seeing two very different movies being pitted against one another as if we needed a winner. Think of it, one of the two movies is about the philosophical notion of men bringing about the end of the world, the thought that an idea brought into being to help humanity can destroy it, a world being launched into chaos with the status quo as we know it being altered forever, its future lying in uncertainty. The other was Oppenheimer.

Written by Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, Barbie follows Barbie (Margot Robbie) and Ken (Ryan Gosling) in the colourful and seemingly perfect world of Barbie Land. They are having the time of their lives. However, when they get a chance to go to the real world, they soon discover the joys and perils of living among humans. Yes, the notion that a bright bubbly movie about a plastic paradise just shows the ridiculous discourse a lot of criticism seems to be bogged down in these days. The manosphere was threatened by a team of women coming together to create a pop entertainment for the masses. Some of that criticism had me even wondering if I wanted to be

subjected to an apparent TED talk on toxic masculinity and feminism. So, when I finally got to check out Barbie, I can now say in all transparency that I had a great time. It’s not perfect - it’s message does err on preachy sometimes. But there is so much invention on show here that you are swept along with its electrifying energy. Quoting Abby Monteil’s review, it’s an existential camp fever dream. In fact I was reminded of another movie - Josie and the Pussycats from 2001. Both are smarter than they were given credit for, boasting a pop visual and aural aesthetic with a thoughtful commentary on consumerism and identity embedded within. Both these movies would make a great double bill.

Gerwig has written and starred in works I’m very fond of. 2013’s Frances Ha, her directorial debut Lady Bird (2016). Here she deftly takes on a world that is essentially a live action cartoon but surprisingly, feels real and lived in. It is a wonderful blend of CGI and practical sets and effects. There are fantastic tips of the hat to cinema of the past. For example, Barbie and co’s trips from Barbie Land and back again evoke the

great George Méliès and his seminal works that helped shape cinema, notably A Trip to the Moon (1902). The cast is terrific although I wasn’t too gone on Will Ferrell. Ferrell can be great when he is reigned in a small bit. Left off the chain to ad lib, it can be irritating but ultimately Ferrell and everyone is giving their all. Robbie has to be especially commended. She’s fantastic playing the pink lady, giving a plastic doll an inner life. It can’t have been an easy task but she succeeds. As producer, she was instrumental in getting Gerwig to direct which certainly paid off.

And so, as I pondered about Oppenheimer, why did Barbie hit the way it did? As I mentioned, the visual aesthetic made it pop, the soundtrack is killer. Ultimately, people young and old just wanted to see a colourful, fun looking and sounding movie. It has a wonderful message for everyonelife is indeed your creation. Ignore the whiny man babies. This is a creation everyone involved with can be proud of. Quoting the title of the Indigo Girls’ song featured in the movie - closer to fine? It’s beyond it!
