Registration Open For Spring Clean Campaign Registrations are now open for National Spring Clean (NSC), Ireland’s largest and most popular anti-litter initiative. Taking place annually in April since 1999, this campaign encourages active participation from every sector of society to take responsibility for litter, by conducting clean-ups in their own local environment. Raising awareness of the national problem of litter as we enter the months of summer is the main aim of the campaign. National Spring Clean is An Taisce operation carried out in partnership with Department of Environment, Heritage & Local Government and Local Authorities and is sponsored by the Wrigley Company Ltd. It has steadily and significantly grown in both size and scale since its inception twenty-five years ago. Aside from encouraging clean-ups of environments by

locals, its objectives include galvanizing the practicing of recycling and re-use where possible, promoting personal responsibility for litter, and heightening awareness of litter and waste issues, among others. National Spring Clean has had a noted string of achievements in their twenty-five-year history. The same year as their inception, An Taisce had 1,732 clean-up events registered with them, in which an estimated 155,000 people took part. Last year, nationwide cleanups were organized by 5,640 groups, and an estimated 2,600 tonnes of litter were collected by the participants. National Spring Clean has been a triumphant success, all thanks to the efforts and enthusiasm of

its volunteers. It has become a fixed date on both school and community calendars, hopefully ensuring even greater success for many years to come. Anyone wishing to register for National Spring Clean can do so online at www.nationalspringclean. org or email ecullen@eeu. antaisce.org. Upon registration, you will be provided with a free clean-up kit that will be sent to the address you provided.

Banteer Win National Capers Competition

The most recent National Capers Competition was held by Macra na Feirme last weekend and was won by a group from Banteer. One of the participants, Kelvin O’Connor, said that he was “proud to be with” Banteer Macra, and that he and his partners were now “All-Ireland Capers Champions”. Mr. O’Connor called Capers “the best competition in Macra” and attributed their success to their “unbelievable” producer Heather Healy, who he says has “stuck with” them since their last victory in 2017. Their act involved Mr. O’Connor and one of his fellow performers dressed up as a suitcase. He recommended Macra to young people who have yet to start college, calling them “the most welcoming people”, and saying that he had made lifelong friends out of his experience. “Just go and do Capers” is his advice to

all young people out there. “Trust me, you will be hooked”. Coming in second place were Mountmellick Macra, with Kilmeen Macra na Feirme following in third place.

Boherbue Students Have Beef With Emissions The Certified Irish Angus group’s competition is heating up! Their competitions are a fascinating challenge to Transition Year students that encourages them to examine the beef industry in tandem with climate, animal care, and the agri industry. Transition year students with or without farming background are invited to explore the agri-food industry in depth. This includes opportunities to meet and present ideas to industry experts from Bord Bia right up to the department of agriculture itself. Groups have the opportunity to win 5 calves from which they can benefit at the end of the competition through sales. Project themes have varied in the past; Improving animal Genetics, Women In Agriculture, and Increasing Consumer Awareness of the Quality of Irish Food have all been fascinating projects that encourage students to not only understand but solve issues in these areas.

A Cut Above The Rest; About Us We are a group of four TY students from Boherbue Comprehensive School taking part in the Certified Irish Angus Beef Schools Competition. Our group is one of 43 groups that have been called forward to exhibit project ideas at the next stage of the Certified Irish Angus Schools Exhibition to a panel of Agri-food industry experts in Croke Park on the 1st of March, 2024. The competition is run by Certified Irish Angus, ABP and Kepak. The title of our project is A Cut Above the Rest, and we are investigating if genomic selection within the Meat the team; Certified Irish Angus breed could Gavin Daly, Vy Ha O’Leary, Norma lead to the production of a lower Kerrisk, and Eoghan Moynihan residual methane emissions animal that appeals to Irish consumers. As part of our project we have created a website – www.hoof-print.com – and we have also designed a Hoof Print logo which will be printed on all Certified Irish Angus beef to inform consumers that the beef they are buying is environmentally friendly as it helps to reduce the carbon ‘hoof print’.

What we have done so far:

On Monday the 29th of January, we went to the Cork County Council to share our ideas with the Lord Mayor of Cork Frank O’Flynn and Councillor Bernard Moynihan, and they provided us with some helpful advice that will assist us to progress on in the competition.

The team also held a TY Cook off using Certified Irish Angus Beef, and enjoyed a Massaman curry made by Sophie Reidy and Danielle O’Sullivan. On Thursday the 1st of February, we visited Boherbue National School. We held a colouring competition for the junior and senior infants, and we also held an angus quiz for the sixth class based on what they learned in the presentation we gave them. We did this to promote the Certified Irish Angus Producer Group and our project. Before we left we handed out our informational leaflets to the children so they could take them home and give them to their parents.

As part of their work, the team has created a survey that looks into consumer understanding of the climate effects of their food shop as well as the changes they would be willing to make for environmentally improved beef. This survey can be taken at the QR code. For more info on beef emissions and what you need to know as a consumer or farmer, visit the hoof-print website.

Laharn Crossroads Dancing Goes ‘Nationwide’

On January 29th, RTE’S Nationwide featured a segment on Laharn Crossroads Dancing which was filmed around August 2023 It not only focused on Laharn Crossroads Dancing but also the tradition of crossroad dancing in 20th century Ireland. It referenced a now legendary speech made by Eamon De Valera, on St. Patrick’s Day 1943. Recorded for Radio Eireann, it became known as the ‘dancing at the crossroads’ speech, recalling the vision the founders of the Gaelic League had for Ireland 50 years prior. Their vision sought a land where community would prevail.

A coming together of people through employment, sport, and culture. The speech funnily enough seems to be a victim of the Mandela effect (a phenomenon where a person believes that their distorted memories are, in fact, accurate recollections) as historian David McCullough points out that DeValera never mentioned dancing at the crossroads. However, you won’t get a better example of what De Valera was alluding to than this grand tradition. The broadcast discussed how the pastime has come and gone over the years with the war of independence interrupting it in the

early twentieth century and how in the mid century saw the dance halls take over in popularity. Revived in 1991, Laharn Crossroads Dancing continues to be a popular event on the nice Sunday evenings throughout the summer. You’ll see the various interview subjects down below attest. It won’t be long until Laharn Cross will be in action again. We’ll be sure to let you all know when it is. This episode is still available to stream on the RTE player as of this issues release - episode title: Nationwide Mon January 29. 2024

Internet Safety: Eas

By CALEB O’CONNOR

The internet is a staple of everyday life. But since 2020, we’ve seen a massive change in its use and the difficulties we run into. These range from online shopping scams to demands of immediate password change to being told your computer will be frozen if you don’t pay. Thankfully, internet safety is easy when you know what to look for. Scams First off, why does this happen? How do people like this get a hold of your email or phone number? There are a few ways; • Some companies sell data to data brokers, who in turn sell this data in illicit spaces to people who aim to scam. • Some scammers use harvesting software to collect data from websites and gather it into lists that are sold off. • Data breaches and leaks.

they seem, the more likely we are to panic, and scammers rely on panic. These provocative subject lines try to force our hand and make us click links that ultimately take us to dodgy versions of real websites. In some cases, as seen more and more recently, there are text versions of these messages that demand we pay customs on a package that we aren’t expecting or even a “hi mum, I’m texting off my friends phone” text that has done the rounds towards the end of 2023. How can you tell genuine contact from criminal activity? Ask “was I expecting this?” Have you ordered something online? Have you requested a password change?

Illicit sources getting your details is not the end of the world, however! Most often, scams appeal with a sense of urgency; “Your card has been frozen because of suspicious activity” “Action Required: your payment was declined” “Google: Password Expiration Notice” Like any con, the more urgent

Never click links in messages or emails you do not trust. These links are likely to take you to a lookalike of the site you expect, and will request your login to disguise themselves as you to take further data, if not outright request your card details.

that they will never contact you to confirm details. Reputable organisations will not prompt you to reset your password without reason. Ask “Who is sending this?” Check who the email is from. In many cases, at a glance, the emails will look eerily close to the real ones, but read carefully. This is also of use when receiving strange texts. When receiving texts from organisations such as AIB, BOI, or An Post, the contact will appear as their name whether or not you have saved the number. Scammers attempt to catch you with that panic, and the first words of the text will be the organisation, rather than the organisation being

asier Than It Seems in the contact line. False Information, Fake News, and Hoaxes We’ve all seen a headline we can scarcely believe. It’s shared with rage, the comments are arguing, and the reactions are all little angry faces. False news is inflammatory and provocative, and it spreads faster than facts. This has led to reaction being the arbiter of truth. But like we do with scams, we have to stop and ask ourselves some questions. First and foremost; Is there any proof? Is this the rambling of someone who is enforcing conspiratorial ideas? Or is there a source? But what if it’s a story about the truth being kept from us? It would still have some proof if it was real. Search around, do your research, and visit Snopes.com if you cannot figure out how genuine one of these posts is.

some invisible in-phone entity who was forcing children to harm themselves or others, with some news outlets claiming that the end goal of the “challenge” was for the victim to kill themselves. This was terrifying; how could someone be threatening children like this? This awful thing has to have come from somewhere, and in the stories were comments about “there are x number of deaths in x country linked with the challenge” and this, at face value, is enough to make you freeze and share. Unfortunately – or indeed, fortunately – these are hoaxes with no confirmed deaths linked to these games. Ask yourself; Where is the proof? A quick look shows no evidence photo, video, or screenshots and even then, we must be mindful of those screenshots. Just how real are they? Has anyone in my life received such messages or challenges? Much like urban legends, it’s a friend of a friend, or a person my cousin knows, or someone online said. This is not proof; it’s fuel. Are the linked deaths actually linked to this? Do the numbers vary or are they consistent? Can you find local news sources that confirm the link?

Hoaxes are similar, but they tend to be more easily spread, and unfortunately, tend to spread into the mainstream media. It only seems like yesterday that stories of challenges like Blue Whale and Momo circulated. These tales were frightening; they came with accusations of

“What is the point of this?” There is no gain from these “challenges” other than pain, so why would someone bother? Unlike traditional scamming, there tends to be no monetary gain, and instead these stories serve as more of a digital boogeyman.

The Basics These are things we forget about. In such a connected world, it’s easy for the old rules of the internet to slip from common use, and even now, we should keep them in mind. Be careful of how much you share Posting updates of when you’re on holiday or out of the house can be a tip off for burglars as they’ll know

the house is empty. Remember that you don’t really know the person on the other side of the screen. Online friends are wonderful, but you don’t always know who the person you’re speaking to could be. Be wary of the photos, videos, and even the texts you share with people whose identity you cannot confirm. The internet is forever. Things you express in a fit of rage or after a few can be deleted the next day, but screenshots can ensure that no one forgets your slip up. Be deliberate in your posts and messages;

if you wouldn’t share it with your nan, don’t share it online.

Dromtariffe Drama Group Announces Its Debut Play The newly formed Dromtariffe Drama Group presents The Two Loves of Gabriel Foley by Jimmy Keary. This three act comedy is set in Aggie Foley’s farmyard parlour in rural Ireland. Aggie is close to seventy and is keen that her only son, Gabriel – now past forty – will find himself a wife. Gabriel is not opposed to the idea and, to improve his chances, joins the nearby town’s newly established Drama Society – “The

Prince of Denmark Players”. There he meets Hazel, and quickly becomes infatuated with her, much to the displeasure of Chrissie McCabe from the neighbouring farm, who has always had her eye on Gabriel. When circumstances warrant that a rehearsal has to be held at Gabriel’s home, the action shifts into full comic gear, with neighbouring farmer, Liam Gavigan, and Aggie’s sister, Lucy

Lacey, playing their part in stirring the pot! Adding spice to the mixture are the posh writer and director, Morag Dellamere, and Clive Snell, a self-important member of “The Prince of Denmark Players” who, co-incidentally, also has his eye on Hazel. The Drama group meet Thursday nights. The cast will be going through the script with rehersals in full swing these past few weeks.

Rockchapel Woman Wins Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal

Whistle player Éimhear Flannery has won the Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal 2024 (Bonn Óir Seán Ó Riada). The final of the competition took place at the Rochestown Park Hotel in Cork on Friday evening (26th January). Fifteen musicians competed for the annual prize. The annual competition, organised by broadcaster and musician Peadar Ó Riada on his Cuireadh Chun Ceoil radio programme, is focused on a different instrument each year. This year it was Flute & Tin Whistle, with the winner receiving a Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal and €2500. Established in 2010, The Bonn Óir Seán Ó Riada competition emphasises entirely on solo playing, recognises and rewards creativity, spirit and musicality. Flannery, who is from Rockchapel, Co. Cork, and also plays the concertina, played two

reels on the whistle, Lady on the Island and the Union Reel, and the slow air Seán Ó Duibhir a Ghleanna, and won the bespoke gold medal prize and €2,500. The judging panel of three comprised

Mary Bergin, Rev. Gary Hastings and Conal Ó Gráda. You can listen back to the competition on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta Cuireadh Chun Ceoil online.

Finally, The Spring Has Returned

By ALICE O’BRIEN

Alice O’Brien Counselling, Newmarket If you’re lucky you might have spotted a few snow-drops peeping up in your garden. Or you may have benefited from the few extra minutes of brightness in the evenings to squeeze a walk into your after-work routine. There are signs for the Spring all around us now; birds are louder in the morning and colour is coming back to the previously bare hedges. After a long Winter, we are emerging into a brighter few months. There are many mental health benefits to the changing of the season and our emergence from hibernation: • Most obvious of all is that

the brightness entices us to get outdoors, to get moving. And exercise is the biggest tool we have to help us with depression and anxiety. Warmer weather prompts us to put the heavy coats away and get outside, increasing our intake of Vitamin D which we are depleted in over the winter. This benefits our overall health and immunity. Long out of sight birds and animals begin to re-emerge. Hearing the birds chirping early in the morning can increase our mood and therefore give us more energy to face the day ahead. Spring time can be very motivating when it comes to cleaning and tidying or organising our space. This

gives us a strong sense of achievement and purpose. We can air our space again in the Spring- throwing open our windows and allowing the air to circulate around our space- allowing energy to flow through. Awakening our homes as well as ourselves. Our bodies reduce the production of melatonin in the Spring as we are coming out of the sleepy season. This increases our energy and our mood.

So, as we approach the new season, you might be reminded of what you learned in school- Anois teacht on Earraigh. Beigh an la ag dul chun sin eadh. Now with the coming of Spring, the day is getting long.

Stand up for Epilepsy Awareness TIME SAFE STAY International Epilepsy Day takes place on the 12th February. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder which affects the brain, and often gives sufferers with seizures. Over 45,000 people in Ireland have epilepsy meaning it is one of the most common neurological conditions in the country, while over 50 million people live with epilepsy worldwide. What causes epilepsy? In half of cases there is no known cause. The person has no illness, disease or damage to explain epilepsy. This is called Idiopathic epilepsy. Some causes are inborn or developmental such as genetic abnormalities or structural problems in the brain like malformed veins or areas which have not developed normally. It is important to note that a person can be diagnosed with epilepsy at any stage of their life. How is epilepsy treated? Can epilepsy be cured? Up to 70% of those living with the condition can go on to become seizure-free if the right treatment is identified. The main treatment for epilepsy are Anti-Seizure Medications which are designed to stop too much electrical activity in the brain. Other treatments such as surgery can be an option for some people with epilepsy, which can be successful in controlling a person’s

Issue 107 February 9th, 2024

seizures. Typically, the majority of people with epilepsy will have to continue to take medications to control their seizures for their lifetime.

What is a seizure? In simple terms a seizure happens when ordinary brain activity is suddenly disrupted. A seizure can be described as an internal electrical storm. It is the consequence of abnormal, excessive discharges of nerve cells. What causes a seizure? For many people, a seizure just happens. However, certain triggers can make seizures more likely. Common triggers can include missed medication, too much alcohol, lack of sleep, flashing lights, stress, and illnesses or fevers. Everyone is different and what affects one person may have no effect on another. How do you respond to a seizure? Seizure first aid is often misunderstood as being complex and unfortunately there are myths surrounding seizure first aid - such as that a person can swallow their tongue or that a person needs to be held down or restrained during a seizure. These are all myths! The key measures that need to be taken when responding to a seizure can be summarised in three key words - TIME, SAFE, STAY. TIME The first thing you should do is TIME the seizure. This is because if a seizure goes over 5 minutes, an ambulance should be called.

DiscoverDuhallow@irdduhallow.com

SAFE Keep the person SAFE during the seizure. If a person is having a convulsive seizure, cushion their head with something soft if possible and remove any harmful objects, e.g. furniture from their vicinity. NEVER put anything in a person’s mouth or restrain them during a seizure. Be aware that there are also types of seizures where the person does not experience convulsions. Instead, they may “zone out” or stare blankly, become confused or agitated, display behaviours like chewing, smacking their lips, fiddling with their clothes, or wandering aimlessly. In this type of seizure, the person’s awareness of their surroundings is affected, and it is important to gently guide the person away from any danger. As with convulsive seizures, never restrict the person’s movements. STAY During the seizure and after it passes, STAY with the person. Often after a seizure, a person with epilepsy will be confused and in many cases, exhausted, and most people who suffer a Grand Mal seizure are likely to have a smaller or Petite Mal seizure shortly after. Make sure to stay with them until recovery is complete, explain what has happened and gently reassure them. The person may have experienced an injury if they have fallen, and if this is the case, ensure normal first aid steps are taken. Raising awareness about epilepsy is crucial to improve the quality of life of those living with it. By doing so, we can help create a more informed, empathetic, and respectful environment for people with epilepsy, and ultimately, a better world for everyone. For resources visit www.epilepsy.ie

Daylight Robbery

fgfgfgfgfgfgfgfgfgfgfgfgfgfgfgfg

A police detective, a bank robber, and a high-power broker enter high-stakes negotiations after the criminal’s brilliant heist spirals into a hostage situation in Spike Lee’s cracking Inside Man (2006). To me, Spike Lee is one of the three kings of New York, in terms of putting it on the big screen. Woody Allen and Martin Scorsese are the other two. Outside of Los Angeles, New York might be the most photographed in American cinema. Lee is a born New Yorker and the great commentator on black and white race relations in America. His films are often an uncompromising cry for civility in the grand experiment known as America. He has always been a maverick, marching to the beat of his own drum. But that hasn’t stopped him from producing more mainstream works in between. Case in point; Inside Man.

The Right Thing. Inside Man is a really solid work, a well made exercise in playing around with the familiar. There isn’t another heist drama like it. It’s a pleasure watching it’s plot develop its twists and turns. Denzel is great but when is he not? The whole cast is superb. The late great Christopher Plummer shines and Jodie Foster, (who’s having a moment currently with the new season of True Detective) is brilliant as the morally ambiguous fixer over the proceedings. Clive Owens is an under rated presence on the big screen. His calm, icy demeaner can be twisted to be either laconic or malevolent.

Lee casts his favourite leading man, Denzel Washington as Detective Keith Frazier who is brought in to control a bank hostage situation being instigated by a team led by Dalton Russell (Clive Owen) that isn’t playing out as it should. The bank’s founder, Arthur Case (Christopher Plummer), seems to be particularly concerned about this certain bank being under siege. It leads Chase to bring in problem fixer Madeline

White (Jodie Foster) to oversee the matter. All the while, Russell and his team are working inside… Inside Man was a welcome return for Lee. Proceedings kick off straight away; we are given a glimpse of our various characters and then, the heist is under way before we know it. But the thing is, the robbers seem to be stalling rather then being in a great big hurry. The great cinematographer, Matthew Libatique lenses the movie while composer Terence Blanchard gives it a beautiful, jazz influenced score evoking the Big Apple. Given that it was five years after 9/11, Spike even comments on the paranoid climate that pervaded America at that time, when middle eastern people were now the target of hatred from white people due to that fateful day. Lee also works in tips of the hat to other great movies too. Lee casts Marcia Jean Kurtz as one of the hostages. She’ll be familiar to film fans as she also appears in that other great New York bank siege drama, Dog Day Afternoon. And the pizzas delivered to feed the hostages are from Sal’s Famous Pizzeria - the name of the pizzeria run by Danny Aiello and his sons in Lee’s definitive masterpiece, Do

Washington exclaims to Owen at some point, “You saw Dog Day Afternoon. You’re stalling.” I hope to revisit the former at some point but as for the latter, if you haven’t already, quit stalling and check out Inside Man. Available on DVD, Blu Ray and to stream on Neflix.

Ash Wednesday - Repent and Believe the Good News. By TOM DENNEHY February marks the beginning of Spring with its lengthening days and the emergence of daffodils signalling the end of Winter. We look forward to the year ahead which offers us new hope and new life. This year we celebrate Ash Wednesday on February 14th, the same day as Valentine’s Day. Ash Wednesday is one of the most significant days in the Church calender. This day marks the beginning of Lent, a season of fasting and prayer. Ash Wednesday takes place 46 days before Easter Sunday and is chiefly observed by Catholics, although many other Christians observe it too. Ash Wednesday comes from the ancient Jewish tradition of penance and fasting. Though not a day of obligation, it is however a day of fast and abstinence where we are allowed only one main meal which usually contains fish. On the day, we receive ashes on our foreheads to remind us that we are mortal and fragile. We are merely pilgrims passing through this world. The ashes symbolise the dust from which God made us. As the priest applies the ashes to a person’s forehead , he speaks the words , “ Remember that you are dust and into dust you shall return”. These are sobering words which remind us about the brevity of life and the need to be ready to meet our Maker when we die. The ashes are made from blessed palm branches taken from the Sunday Mass of previous years. Our New Year resolutions may well have gone astray so on this special day, let us reflect on how we can improve our own lives

Issue 107 February 9th, 2024

and improve our relations with others and most importantly, our relationship with God. On Ash Wednesday, the priest may alternatively speak the words, “ Repent and believe the good news of the Gospel”. It is important that we Repent and set ourselves right with God. Every Lent, God calls out, “Return to me with your whole heart” Joel 2.12. Why? Because He is gracious and merciful…. abounding in steadfast love” Joel 2.13. And where best to experience this love and mercy than in the Sacrament of Reconciliation? Repent means to turn our lives around by turning away from sin. Turning towards God’s grace and mercy. Turning towards the light of Christ. Turning towards freedom and away from the slavery of sin. Let us examine ourselves and see if we can make improvements in our relationship with God and with others. 1. Does God have first place in my life , or have I allowed other things to become “ idols”? 2. Do I pray regularly? Do I express my gratitude to the Lord for His gifts and blessings? 3. Have I been disrespectful of God or taken His name in vain? 4. Have I been faithful in honouring the Lord by going to Sunday Mass? 5. Do I need to forgive someone ? Do I need to ask someone else for forgiveness? 6. Have I gossiped or spoken unkindly about someone? Have I betrayed a confidence? 7. Have I given in to anger, frustration, or impatience with someone close to me? Believe the Good News.

DiscoverDuhallow@irdduhallow.com

The good news is that God sent his only Son, Jesus in to the world to die for us and restore us to Himself. “For God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten Son, so that whoever believes in Him will not die but have eternal life” John 3.16. God loves us all with an unconditional love, an everlasting love and He never gives up on us. He is always waiting patiently for our response to His love. He has sent His Holy Spirit to be with us always as our helper and guide and to make Jesus present to us in His Word and in The Holy Eucharist which is the bread of life -- life giving food for our soul which brings us to eternal life. Jesus conquered death by His sacrifice on the cross and resurrection from the dead. We too will join Him in His Heavenly kingdom by doing as He did and following His example by being kind and compassionate to others, forgiving them and loving them as He has instructed us to do. He has instructed us to share the “Good news “ to all we encounter. “Go make disciples of all nations. “ Matt 28.19. So as we begin our Lenten journey let us make Ash Wednesday the beginning of a grace filled Lenten journey and discern the best way for us to prepare to be ready to celebrate the Joy of the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead on Easter morning.
