Duhallow Round-Up Banteer Road Resurfacing

The existing road will be completely resurfaced from Banteer village square to the Railway crossing under the 2024 Council works programme –the Clonmeen road and Kanturk road resurfacing works will hopefully follow soon after.

Nadd village will also have road safety improvements works completed along with a flashing speed fitted in 2024.

An Information Evening On Substance Abuse

Glenflesk, Kilcummin and Kilgarvan GAA Clubs invite you to an ‘Information Evening on Substance Misuse Awareness’ which will be held in the Killarney Heights Hotel on Friday, January 26th at 8pm.

It is aimed at helping parents, coaches, teachers and anyone involved with young people, who are interested in finding out more about supporting them in making healthy and positive life choices.

Guest speakers include Timmy Lane of the The Two Norries and his brothers, who will share their stories of addiction and recovery.

Information on local support services will be shared on the night.

The event is open to all members of the public and admission is free.

Boherbue Blooms

Boherbue Tidy Towns in conjunction with Boherbue Comprehensive School planted up to 1500 pollinator friendly bulbs at the biodiversity garden in Boherbue. This was done with the assistance of over 20 Transition Year students from the school.

The bulbs were a mix of daffodils, iris, alliums, Crocus, and Anemones.

All bulbs planted are hardy perennials which will naturalize to the area for years to come.

Huge thanks to all who got the work done.

Boherbue Tidy Towns volunteers continue to enhance Boherbue village and won the overall Pride of County Cork Award 2023 in the Muintir Na Tíre competition.

Re-Turn Scheme

Reduce, Reuse, Re-Turn

As of February 1st, Ireland will be participating in the Re-Turn Scheme.

This game changing action aims to up the recycling quantity for bottles and cans across the country. To date, over 60% of bottles and cans are through green bins, and while this is a good number, it could be improved. With 30% not collected, litter increases.

The Re-Turn Scheme puts a value on cans and plastic bottles to offer some amount of incentive to return them. It is also a Circular Economy Initiative; this aims to avoid brand new production by keeping produce within the economy as long as possible, thus cutting down on production waste and discharge, while also cutting down on littering.

On an international scale, Deposit Return Schemes have proved hugely beneficial in cutting down littering. Germany was the first big European country to adopt the scheme in 2003, and it has since reached a PET bottle collection rate of 98%.

The scheme aims to fund itself; it doesn’t cost the public or government any money and is funded through producer fees for each product.

The container must be empty, undamaged, and in its original shape with the Re Turn logo clearly legible.

When your container is returned, a voucher is printed, and this can be returned to the counter of the store. This voucher can

be used against other purchases or exchanged for the amount.

The vouchers issued from the Reverse Vending Machine must be redeemed at the same outlet.

It’s that simple!

As the scheme launches, the site - re-turn.ie - aims to host an interactive map to show the locations of their reverse vending machines. The site offers an extensive frequently asked questions section for consumers, producers, and retailers alike.

How does it work?

A deposit is applied to containers with the Re-Turn logo. This deposit is size dependent;

Naomh Pàdraig Spread Christmas Cheer with Generous Donations

Kanturk Men’s Shed would like to thank both staff and students from Scoil Naomh Pàdraig in Kanturk for their very kind donation to the shed.

Over the Christmas period, students of the school went Carol Singing and raised a large sum of money which they used towards school equipment, and the balance was kindly donated to the Men’s Shed.

The presentation of the cheque was for the sum of €425 was gratefully received and with insurance up for renewal in February, it couldn’t come at a better time.

Also included are staff and students of 3rd and 4th class who made the visit very enjoyable.The shed hopes come to their aid as they make some garden seats, buddy benches, and other goods to help entertain the students in their time in Scoil Naomh Padraig.

Community Meeting Called In Dromtarriffe

A public meeting will be held in Dromtarriffe Parish Hall on Wednesday night 7th February 2024 @ 7.30pm This is a very important meeting regarding the security and safety of the people of Dromtarriffe and all the surrounding hinterlands.

Everyone is most welcome to attend, from any area in Duhallow if you so wish.

Loneliness and isolation, and many other topics concerning the welfare and comforts of the elderly and our most vulnerable family, friends, and neighbours will be a key part of the meeting Remember we are all in this together.

Garda Kathryn Canty, our Liaison Officer, and other

remembers of An Garda Siochana will be in attendance. They will guide and encouraged us to be proactive, help us to get organized and up to speed with modern technical devices that are becoming more readily available

every week, send us regular text messages and advice on any criminal activities in this division, and all around the neighbouring parishes. They will advise us and make us aware of what is happening behind the scenes.

Their aim is to have us forewarned of the major scams going on out there and hopefully before they hit our own area.

Helena O’Connor of Boherbue Tidy Towns brought her skills to the fore for two weekends. Saturday 13th and 20th saw volunteers learning to harvest willow for use in projects. This Meitheal is a key exchange of community knowledge, and the days extended into learning how basketry willow is planted, how it grows, and how best to harvest it. The groups were free to take home cuttings or rods for community based projects.

Meitheal is the perfect word for such a day - while not often used anymore, it is the old Irish word for when neighbours come together to assist one another with crops and other such projects.

Willow basketry has picked up in popularity in recent years, and we hope to see more events such as this to promote language and tradition, as well as community learning.

Horticulturist, IRD Duhallow Biodiversity, like many, is a word which is thrown around so often these days that we all know the word, but we don’t necessarily understand the reality of the loss of our native species, and how it is vital that they be preserved.

We as a species are not an island, to massively misquote John Donne; we cannot survive without the intricate ecosystem that we are a part of. And yet we wilfully damage and destroy systems that have taken millennia to evolve and develop, and we don’t even yet know or understand exactly how many different species of flora, fauna, micro and macroorganisms, bacteria, and fungi make up these systems or how they interact with each other. Often we only notice the loss of species when their disappearance starts impacting on other more familiar species.

The Birds of Conservation Concern in Ireland assessment in 2021 showed that 25% of Ireland’s regularly occurring bird species are in severe decline with an additional 37% showing moderate declines.

All together 63% of Ireland’s bird species are in serious trouble. We might start to notice the lack of familiar birds in the skies, but have we noticed the huge decline in the insects that they need to eat, or the destruction of nesting sites and food sources through intensive farming practices and hedgerow destruction? And birds are only one example; species decline is happening across the board and is one the largest threats to our survival.

So what can we do? How can we change this?

The first step in any recovery is to recognise that there is a problem. Only then can we start working to remedy it. Small steps do work, we can’t on our own change global agricultural and industrial practices, but we can, in our own spaces and our communities, be mindful of our own behaviour. We can stop using

harmful pesticides, we can leave wild spaces alone, just to be wild and we can allow other previously managed ground to become wild.

We don’t have to be in control of everything all of the time.

And we can plant trees, and hedgerows, and flowering shrubs, and fruit trees and sustainable wild flowers all around our community spaces. Each and every one of these plants will provide food and shelter to a variety of wild species, even if we cannot see them, and each of these will support a further range of species and so on until natural systems can reassert themselves.

Luckily, our LEADER funded Communities Planting for Biodiversity Programme at IRD Duhallow is running for a second year, providing native trees, hedging, shrubs, and flowers to all communities. This funding supports community groups and schools to work together to promote biodiversity in every town and village in Duhallow.

Dos and Don’ts of Responsible Dog Ownership Dogs are more than just pets; they are loyal companions, faithful friends, and even family members.

But owning a dog also comes with great responsibility. Responsible dog owners not only provide their dogs with basic needs such as food, water, shelter, and veterinary care, but also ensure their dogs are well-trained, socialized, and happy. In this article, we will explore some of the benefits and challenges of owning a dog, and offer some tips and resources on how to be a responsible dog owner.

Is a dog right for me?

Owning a dog is a lifelong commitment, with some dogs living up to 20 years of age. If you are thinking of getting a dog as a pet, firstly consider if your home and family lifestyle is suited to keeping a dog for its lifetime. If living in rental accommodation, landlord permission must be sought. Some local authorities do not permit tenants to keep dogs of certain breeds under the Control of Dogs Regulations.

Is my lifestyle suited to caring for a dog?

You need to find a breed of dog that will suit your lifestyle, making sure you have time each day to care for, interact with, and exercise your dog. Be aware of other commitments such as a baby or a job that could impact you caring for a dog.

Do I have the financial resources to cover expenses for a dog?

In addition to household expenses such as dog food, bedding and toys, you will need to budget for a dog licence, microchipping and veterinary care.

If you keep a dog, you MUST follow these requirements.

My dog must: • Be microchipped and registration kept up to date on an approved database.

• Have a certificate of registration from the microchip database.

• Have a valid dog licence issued by An Post.

• Wear a collar or harness with my contact details attached.

• Be under your control in urban and rural public places.

• Have access to clean water and appropriate food.

• Be kept in a manner that safeguards its health and welfare.

• Be kept in a manner that does not threaten the health or welfare of another animal or people.

Consider adopting from a local authority dog shelter or animal welfare charity.

If your dog goes missing, there is a greater chance of being reunited if your dog is microchipped.

Dog Licence If you own a dog, you must have a dog licence.

Dog licences may be purchased online at www.licences.ie or in your local Post Office.

Current fee for an individual dog licence, valid for one year, is €20; the fee for a lifetime licence is €140.

Basic Care: • Provide clean water, food and shelter suited to your dog’s needs.

• Exercise your dog.

• Groom your dog regularly to keep coat and skin healthy.

• Play with your dog to keep them stimulated.

• Socialise your dog regularly with other dogs.

• Train your dog to understand basic commands In public: Pick up and bin dog poo when in public places.

Restricted breeds must be securely muzzled and kept on a strong chain or leash (maximum 2 metres in length) by a person over 16 years of age who is capable of controlling the dog.

Sliabh Luachra And Duhallow History To Be Published After 100 Years!

Cló Staire Chiarraí is delighted to announce that the History of the Parishes of Rathmore, Gneeveguilla and Knocknagree written by Fr William Ferris in the mid 1920s is finally to be published after 100 years.

After three years work on the original manuscript by editor Brendan McCarthy, the book will finally see the light of day in Spring 2024.

The Power of a Good Compliment self-esteem. Our brain releases dopamine, the same chemical that gets released when we fall in love, eat a cupcake, or meditate. When giving a compliment to someone else, we get the same physical reaction as when we express gratitude, it lifts our mood and boosts our over-all well-being.

So, what should we do when we receive a compliment? Well we should accept it? Graciously listen, thank the person for giving it and most importantly, believe it. We can acknowledge our own abilitieswe work hard to achieve them.

We were talking about stress and how to manage it. During the group, some ladies referenced these articles, saying how much they enjoyed them. In typical Irish fashion, I batted away the compliment- because we’re Irish, we don’t do praise. But, I began to wonder what happens when we receive compliments? Or when we give a compliment?

Saint Peregrine - Patron Saint of Cancer Sufferers.

It is wonderful to have a saint like Saint Peregrine who will intercede before the throne of God for all who are suffering from cancer. A diagnosis of cancer in our lives is a life changing experience and it is important not to lose hope and to trust in God and His Holy will for our lives. He wants to heal us and has given us Saint Peregrine as our intercessor.

Peregrine Laziosi was born of a wealthy family at Forli, Italy, in 1260. As a youth, he was active in politics as a member of the antiPapal party. During one uprising, the Pope sent St. Philip Benizi to mediate and Philip was struck in the face by Peregrine. While Philip offered the other cheek, Peregrine was so overcome that he repented and converted to Catholicism.

Following the instructions of the Virgin Mary, received in a vision, Peregrine went to Sienna and joined the Servites.

For thirty years, he worked unceasingly while as far as possible observing silence and solitude. Sometime later, Peregrine was sent to Forli to found a new house of the Servite Order. An ideal priest, he had a reputation for fervent preaching and being a good confessor. One of his slogans as a Servite may well have been; “better today than yesterday, better tomorrow than today.” Daily he sought to become a more fervent religious man. To atone for past misdeeds, he treated himself harshly and worked hard for the poor and afflicted. People took to calling him the “Angel of Good Counsel”, so grateful were they for his wise advice so freely given. He was afflicted with cancer of the foot and amputation was decided upon. The night before the scheduled surgery, he spent hours in prayer. Then he

dozed off and dreamt that Christ was touching him and healing his foot. The experience woke him up. In the dim moonlight he saw that his foot, carefully bandaged a few hours earlier, was completely cured. The Forlineses appreciated him still more after learning of his miraculous cure. When they were sick, they appealed for his prayers. Many were healed when he whispered “Jesus “into their ears. His miraculous healings caused his reputation to become widespread. He died in 1345 at the age of eighty five.

St. Peregrine, like St Paul, was in open defiance of The Church as a youth. Once again, given the grace of conversion, he became one of the great saints of his time.

His great fervour and qualities as a confessor brought many back to the true faith. Afflicted with cancer, Peregrine turned to God and was richly rewarded for his faith, enabling him over many years to lead others to the truth.

He is patron saint of cancer patients.

He was canonized by Pope Benedict X111 in 1726.

O great Saint Peregrine, you have been called “The Wonder Worker” because of the numerous miracles which you have obtained from God for those who have had recourse to you.

For so many years you bore in your own flesh this cancerous disease that destroys the very fibre of

our being. You had recourse to the source of all grace when the power of man could do no more.

You were favoured with the vision of Jesus coming down from His Cross to heal your affliction. Ask of God and Our Lady to cure the sick whom we entrust to you. (names of those whom you are praying).

Aided in this way by your powerful intercession, we shall praise God for His great goodness and mercy.

Amen.

A Prayer to Saint Peregrine for One Suffering from Cancer Dear St. Peregrine, I need your help. I feel so uncertain of my life right now. This serious illness makes me long for a sign of God’s love. Help me to imitate your enduring faith when you faced the ugliness of cancer and surgery.

Allow me to trust the Lord the way you did in this moment of distress.

I want to be cured , but right now I ask God for the strength to bear the cross of my life. I seek the power to proclaim God’s presence in my life despite the hardship, anguish and fear I now experience.

O Glorious St Peregrine , be an inspiration to me and petitioner of those needed graces from our loving Father. Amen

Film Review

Judgement Night A girl who may or may not be possessed by a demon leads those around her to question their faith and belief systems in William Friedkin’s seminal horror masterpiece The Exorcist (1973).

A lot of my friends are starting to have children now. You can see how it changes them. Suddenly they are responsible for the protection of another human being.

All of them are great parents, but it is frightening to think if your child was in distress and needed help.

If you tried everything that science and medicine has to offer and you were left with no other options, what would you do? Well, that’s the premise of one of the big ones, not just of the 70s, but of all time The Exorcist.

McCambridge!

It’s hard to convey what a phenomenon The Exorcist was when released. It is truly iconic. It’s not hyperbolic to state that most peoples knowledge of exorcism comes from this movie. What ultimately makes the movie work was the pairing of its two creators; Blatty was a man of faith, Friedkin erred more agnostic. This is the movies greatest achievement; whether you are someone of faith or if you are an atheist, for the running time of this movie, you believe its premise 100%. Its photography, special effects, the avant garde sound design, the iconic score. Monumental!

Based on a book by William Peter Blatty, the story follows the demonic possession of a young girl and her mother’s attempt to rescue her through an exorcism by two Catholic priests. The making of The Exorcist has developed a mythical status as the years have went on; Stories of the production being cursed (apparently several members of the crew passed away during the movie’s production), as well as Friedkin’s seemingly mad method of directing his actors. It certainly only adds to the reputation of the movie. But

what stood out for me on my recent rewatch is how heavy the atmosphere is, to the point that it nearly becomes oppressive. Most horror movies tend to mix humour with horror, the idea is to release tension. Here it’s relentless. It treats its subject with the utmost seriousness. Its documentary style depicts, in the director’s own words; “a little girl in Georgetown, in an upstairs bedroom, who’s possessed by a demon.”

Blatty, who also wrote the screenplay, teamed up with director William Friedkin to deliver a movie for the ages.

Apparently the story was inspired by a real life exorcism that occurred in 1949. A great cast was assembled. Ellen Burstyn is terrific as a mother at her wits end. Playing the most infamous child role in cinema is newcomer Linda Blair. She’s amazing in such a heavy role. Max Von Sydow, Jason Miller, and Lee J Cobb round out a magnificent cast. The legendary voice of the demon was done by veteran actress, Mercedes McCambridge. Friedkin wanted a voice that was neither male nor female. Mercedes’ androgynous voice certainly fit the bill, albeit with the aid of whiskey, cigarettes, and raw eggs. Legions of horror fans salute your effort, Ms

Cancer is a scary word.

Everyone has been affected by cancer in some capacity, but some forms are less frequently discussed.

22nd to the 28th of January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Week.

In the UK and Ireland, almost 3,500 people are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year, with the highest incidences between ages 30-35. 95% of cases in the UK are a result of untreated HPV infections.

Regular smear and HPV screenings should be attended from age 25. These will be offered every 3 years. From age 30 up, screenings are less frequent, usually every 5 years.

While untreated HPV can become Cervical Cancer, it takes 15-20 years for this to happen. Attending your regular screenings will be a huge help in terms of prevention and care.

Even if you’ve had a hysterectomy, you may need to continue screenings. Subtotal hysterectomy removes the uterus but leaves the cervix,

and depending on the reason for the procedure, even total hysterectomy patients may need to continue screenings. Talk to your GP if you are unsure.

Letters are regularly sent to those who require screenings and should not be put on the long finger.

MABS - Be Moneywise In The New Year

“Money makes the world go ‘round.” Nice to hear when you have a lot of it. Disheartening to hear when you don’t.

We have had a crazy last four years. The economy has been rattled by a pandemic and we now have two wars that don’t seem to be dissipating. Budgeting is on everyone’s minds in relation to the price of food, fuel, and materials in general. Debt is a dreaded thing to creep up on a person; the insidious escalation can turn a person’s life upside down, with it seeming like there is nowhere to turn for help.

Well, there is!

That being the Money Advice and Budgeting Service, Ireland or MABS. Founded in 1992, MABS is a free, independent, confidential and non-judgemental money advice and budgeting service for all members of the public.

MABS primarily works with people experiencing over-indebtedness.

MABS money advisers work with clients who may have difficulties with a wide range of personal debts including personal loans, mortgages, credit card debt, catalogue debts, debts to legal moneylenders and hire purchases.

Money advisers help clients by reviewing their budgets, negotiating with their creditors and looking at opportunities to

maximise their income.

Money advisers also act as Approved Intermediaries under personal insolvency legislation for clients availing of a Debt Relief Notice. MABS has always dealt with mortgage and housing related debt and this is treated as a priority debt in MABS. MABS has an additional panel of over 30 Dedicated Mortgage Arrears Advisers to work with clients on their mortgage arrears issues.

MABS acts as the gateway to advice under the Abhaile scheme, which provides vouchers for clients to see Personal Insolvency Practitioners, legal or financial advisers. In addition, MABS supports clients at all of the

repossession court sittings in the country as Court Mentors.

MABS has a remit in Money Management Education by advising clients about budgeting and debt management and facilitating group talks in schools and the community in relation to money management, good saving and spending habits, sources of credit and the avoidance of overindebtedness.
