NEWS OF THE MICROFILM INDUSTRY

AUTUMN 1992 No 31

Institute 5750 seminars a great success The Institute of Micrographics recently set up two seminars to try to put interested people in the picture with regard to the dreaded BS5750.

Vasili and Sue Smith gave an even more polished conclusion to the Southern event — due, no doubt, to the practice that they had in Nottingham.

Nottingham The first, on September 8th, was at Nottingham and attracted a good response with delegates attending from as far away as Scotland. The seminar began with a coffee reception followed by an interesting lecture laying down the reasons for BS5750, the approximate costs, how to go about obtaining it and the role a consultant can play. This was clearly and concisely given by Mr. Keith Miller, himself a consultant who has experience with other microfilm companies. Sid Vasili and Sue Smith — “a polished conclusion . . .”

Positive feedback Due to the extremely positive feedback received, the Institute is to organise further seminars in 1993. These will be accessible both to members and non-members, though members will, of course, benefit from more favourable prices. Some ideas for future seminars are as follows: 1) The legal implications (of microfilm) January ’93 2) Bureau standards (quality of work produced) April ’93 3) Health & Safety in micrographics June ’93 4) BS5750 (another chance) September ’93 The above dates are approximate and the venues are yet to be decided but if you are interested in attending any of these or have any suggestions for subjects worthy of a seminar, please let the Institute know. Remember the Institute will only survive with your support.

Rapt attention.

There was then a brief coffee break before a representative from the Department of Trade and Industry took the floor to explain what help you might expect from that direction. We were then exposed to the user’s view. The user in this case was HMSL Group Ltd, as they have already achieved BS5750. Their experience of attaining it was shared by their Quality Assurance Manager, Susan Smith, who had successfully navigated the company through the various obstacles that you will all run into. A lot of time and money can be saved if you are forewarned of these pitfalls. Sid Vasili, HMSL Group Managing Director, wound up the morning by giving an overview on the benefits of having the accreditation and then answering questions from the floor. The whole event was capped by a very good buffet lunch and a drink from the bar, if required.

Reading The second seminar, on September 9th, was held at the Reading Moat House and was even better attended than the one in Nottingham. It followed exactly the same pattern as the first but the consultant in this case was Mr. David Forsythe and there was a different D.T.I. representative. As HMSL Group was, at the time of the seminars at least, the only member company with BS5750 accreditation and since they were willing to GIVE their time once again, Sid The M icrographics Market Place
