Universities improve student access to reader printers and copiers
Wolverhampton and Birmingham Universities and University College London have all recently installed the new Emos Copytex AS6100 high security access control system on their copiers and microfiche reader printers. At Wolverhampton 50 AS6100 units are being installed on every copier in the university. Students purchase disposable value cards to gain access to the copiers. Staff are issued with account cards to enable their copying to be logged against relevant account numbers. This account information is collected monthly via a laptop computer and fed into a desktop PC to produce management reports and invoices. Early next year the AS6100 units will be networked to a PC. This will considerably speed up the data collection service. Wolverhampton University has used Emos terminals for over five years. The high security terminals upgrade the existing 39 Emos CX4300 terminals and expand the number installed. The redundant CX4300 terminals will be installed on laser printers in the university’s computer laboratories. Students will be able to use their value cards to purchase laser pages on these printers. Birmingham University has installed 16 Emos AS6100 terminals for installation on copiers, a laser printer and a microfiche reader printer in its libraries. Eight single column value card dispensers will also be installed. Twenty AS6100 high security terminals at University College London have also been installed in libraries. They upgrade the existing Emos terminals on copiers and microfiche reader printers. University College London has used Emos terminals for more than six years. The advanced “ structure measurement” technology behind this new generation of Copytex AS6100 control terminals offers a virtually fraud proof system, and the visible depreciation stripe on cards enables both the student and the management to see how much value remains on the card at any time. The card operation is three times faster than earlier models, enabling universities and colleges to offer students a better service by reducing queuing, while obtaining all the other benefits.

Houston Fearless has expanded its product line into electronic imaging with the introduction of a high-speed scanner/digitizer. The new unit scans and digitizes 16/35mm roll films at up to 60 images per minute automatically. Scanned images can be stored in TIFF or other publicdomain formats, making the unit adaptable to any MS-DOS computer system. Other features include very high image storage quality, built-in image enhancement with hand-held control module, and grey-scale capability. Silver, diazo and vesicular films can be scanned in either cartridges or open reels. A microforms model is also available for scanning and digitizing microfiche, aperture cards, and jackets.

Portable Ultrasonic SpliceMaster
They have also added a portable, low-power 16/35mm splicer to their product line. The new “ SpliceMaster” ultrasonic splicer handles all polyester-based and heavy leader-type films, as well as perforated films. SpliceMaster is completely self-contained and requires no consumables. Other features include close-tolerance splices (that are just as strong as the base material), light weight, portable, meets all U.S. and European power requirements and can be flush mounted on work stations. A 16mm thru 105mm SpliceMaster model is also available from Houston Fearless.

Technology update
Direct, high speed data transfer to microfilm from computers is offered by Datacom Services via ISDN2. The service is an all digital dial-up system operating at 64KBPS (7,000 characters per second). As an example, a 100 Mbyte file may be transmitted in less than an hour. Benefits include the reduction in magnetic tape handling, automated data transfer and added data security.
