1992 McCarthy Award

David Meredith, Founder and Managing Director of Profile Microfilming (Kent) Limited, has won the 1992 McCarthy Award for Excellence of Microfilm Application. The nomination of David for this prestigious international award cited his constant seeking for perfection in the quality of the work performed by his bureau and the way that this, together with his unselfish efforts on behalf of the industry as a whole, have raised the acceptability of microfilm as a reliable and cost-effective means of storing information. It is worthy of note that David was one of the founder members of the Institute of Micrographics.

Emmett Publishing with Gratek cameras

Emmett Publishing Ltd. are an established microfiche company based in Haslemere, Surrey. They specialise in microfiche editions of large educationally-orientated collections. For over ten years they have worked with institutions such as the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and the Courtauld Institute of Art. Emmett Publishing’s titles are renowned for their superior clarity and editorial standard, and have been supplied to major libraries from Australia and Japan to the United States and Europe. To achieve these superior results, Emmett Publishing demand similar standards from the equipment they use. That is why Emmett Publishing have used Gratek cameras exclusively for their black and white microfiching work for the last two and a half years, and a Gratek camera for the colour reformatting of their last five publications. For black and white microfiche master production, Emmett Publishing have purchased two Gratek Bookmaster cameras and processors. They are versatile enough to cope with the changing demands of filming originals which are often fragile or a challenge to reproduce successfully. Delivery and installation are made easier by the component nature of the camera, and the simple mechanics and accessible electronics have turned maintenance from a specialised task to a routine act by the camera operator. All of this has meant a considerable increase in the efficiency and profitability of Emmett Publishing’s microfilming operations: in fourteen months of filming (or over 5,000 microfiche), less then twenty fiche have had to be refilmed for technical reasons. Naturally, the camera operator is also happier to be using a more reliable machine, which will perform all the tasks required of it. For colour work, Emmett Publishing now rely on a modified Gratek Congress camera, preferring this to the custom made system used before. The Congress has the same ease of use as the Bookmaster, needing a minimal amount of space or operator expertise. Working in close association with Emmett Publishing, Gratek have adapted the camera to perform a difficult job with outstanding results. The colour microfiche masters produced with the aid of the Gratek Congress camera are claimed to be unsurpassed examples of microfilming techniques. The flexibility of the camera has allowed Emmett Publishing to control precisely the image reproduced on the film. Emmett Publishing have no hestitation in recommending Gratek products and services to the microfilm industry, and look forward to further associations between the two companies.
