The Annual General Meeting is to be held at the Royal Horticultural Hall at 6.00pm on Thursday 19th November 1992. As the Microfilm Showcase closes for the evening at 5.30pm, the AGM will follow on immediately in a room upstairs from the main hall. The membership will have the task of proposing and electing a new committee or voting for the incumbent members to continue.
Resignation
One member of the committee has, however, resigned.
Marion Freeman of Androcles, who was the secretary, has, , unfortunately had to take this decision due to the fact that she is moving to California. Apart from being one of the founding members, she has been an invaluable help and will be sorely missed. Marion assures us that she will keep up her membership and looks forward to bring kept informed. As an AGM the meeting is, of course, also open to non-members and everyone will be made welcome.
Congratulations
The Institute would like to add their congratulations to those of this magazine to Mr. David Meredith on his being awarded Kodak’s coveted McCarthy Award. David was, of course, another of the small band of Institute founder members.

Newsletter
It is hoped that a second newsletter will be available at the Showcase. The first was greeted, generally, very positively. I believe that the Institute is finally getting their act together — these things do, however, take time to mature.
Subscriptions
Many of the original members have now been in the Institute for eighteen months or more but have not yet been asked to re-subscribe — this is because the committee felt that they had to prove that something was happening. After the AGM it is planned to begin canvassing those members for a second subscription — I hope that the committee gets the support for which it has worked so hard. Remember — the Institute can only survive with your support.

Dear Editor I refer to the letter from John Negus in your Late Summer issue, number 30, in which he refers to the downloading of information from optical disk to microfilm.
As is becoming increasingly apparent, both microfilm and electronic imaging have an important role to play in a well-designed document management system (see the article by Caroline Lally in the Late Summer issue of Micrographics Marketplace). Digital processing offers many advantages in the handling of document information, but other related requirements of document handling systems include storage, archiving, distribution, cost per megabyte and the legal status of the medium. In many application areas microfilm simply cannot be beaten in meeting these criteria, and so downloading will become a requirement for many users of optical disk and other electronic recording systems.
Two years ago, iBase Corp, San Francisco Ca, introduced the IP40 Laser Printer. This printer accepts images from an optical disk (or other electronic imaging system) and prints the image onto 16mm microfilm or microfiche. The printer uses a raster printing system, and any scanned document can be recorded on film. The unit also has the facility to record ASCII information onto film, and is capable of combining a scanned image image with ASCII information on the same frame. Resolution is up to 400dpi, and the quality of the film image compares favourably with standard camera film.
As electronic imaging becomes more widely used, and the volume of data on disk accumulates, the need for output to microfilm becomes more apparent. New applications are being devised. New ways of preparing, presenting and storing information are being developed and applications to transfer electronic document files to microfilm are becoming more frequent. A new partnership between electronic data handling and microfilm storage is starting to emerge.
So, I don’t think John Negus is wrong again! And maybe many users of optical disk might feel more secure knowing they can download the valuable information on their disks to microfilm!
Yours sincerely Glen Mezher Managing Director — Hegira (UK) Ltd. Dear Editor, I thought the enclosed letter may be of interest to your readers which proves that microfilm is still assisting the Royal Air Force, and in this case the old No. 17 Fighter Squadron of Spitfires who were directly involved in the Battle of Britain and the Burma Campaign. 26th September 1992
Dear Brian,
May I thank you most sincerely fo r your kindness and expertise in printing the microfilm fo r this Squadron’s Operational Record Book during the war.
This took a considerable amount o f your time as I well know, having spent two afternoons on it myself.
The delay in sending you a letter o f appreciation was not due to tardiness on our behalf but entirely due to the fact that we have not yet completed the exercise.
We did manage to rush through two copies to be shown at our reunion two weeks ago which were greatly appreciated by all the pilots present, but the actual job o f getting copies made and bound is in the hands o f Keith Hiscock whom you met when we visited you.
On completion it is the intention to thank everyone concerned fo r their assistance and naturally your name was at the top o f the list.
However, 1 hope you will take this personal letter as our sincere appreciation o f the excellent way in which you have assisted us, and we can only say that without your time and expertise the job would never have got o ff the ground at all.
I trust that your trip to Germany was a success and enjoyable as well as profitable in these times o f recession and 1 look forward to buying you a pint (or two) on our next meeting.
With every good wish Yours sincerely Don Healey (F/Lt.) Hon. Secretary: Pilots & Officers, No. 17 Fighter Squadron (Spitfires)
As a matter of interest the IMC Exhibition in Berlin went very well and we generated a lot of interest in our equipment.
Yours sincerely Brian Allen Managing Director, Allen Micro Products
