[Thanks to John Robert Coy for this summary of the ABA Midwest Tounament and to the Indiana Lyons for the compilation of photos of Lyons fans] ABA MIDWEST REGION TOURNAMENT (Florissant, Missouri) What an opening game for YOUR Indiana Lyons in the American Basketball Association Tournament on Friday evening March 18, 2022! The Lyons played the Missouri Capitals, who had defeated them pretty handily in the regular season. This game was a completely different story. The bottom line: Indiana Lyons 125 and Missouri Capitals 97. The score is not a good indication of how dominant the Lyons were. They had all the momentum and the Capitals looked like they were stunned from the start. Lyons Center Alex Brown (AB) was the absolute most ferocious that I have ever seen him! He was a terror. AB’s stat line: 32 points, 14 rebounds, 3 blocks, 1 assist. He was tearing the rim down with dunk after dunk. He was a oneman gang. Lyons player Tee Williams played exceptionally well having: 21 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists and one steal. Scootee Walker finished with 17 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. The entire Lyons Team were tenacious on defense! The team’s energy level was through the roof. Coach Jamarr Keglar and Owner Tyrone Brown certainly had the Lyons well prepared! GAME 2 SATURDAY NIGHT MARCH 19th, 2022 Your Indiana Lyons played the Clarksville (Tennessee) Phoenix in their quest to reach the Championship game. These two teams are incredibly evenly matched. They have split the four games they played this year. Last night, the Lyons got off to a slow start and were behind by double digits at the end of the first quarter. The Lyons had dug themselves a pretty good-sized hole. The Lyons fought hard and by halftime had climbed back into the game only trailing by 3 points. The 1st quarter belonged to Clarksville and the 2nd quarter to the Lyons. Clarksville came out firing in the third quarter and before the Lyons knew what had happened, they were down double digits for the second time. There were some pretty restless fans, including this writer. Clarksville controlled the 3rd quarter but still weren’t too far ahead that the Lyons couldn’t rally. Fortunately, with energy, fortitude and determination, the Lyons played an inspired final quarter and roared back! The Lyons are truly a never say die group of young men. This writer has firsthand seen the team up by 30-some odd points and down by the same, and regardless they never quit!
This game did see-saw back and forth with several lead changes in the 2nd half. In the end, the Lyons maintained their composure and slowly pulled away in the last few minutes winning 98 to 87. The game was much closer, and a lot tougher, than the score would indicate. Lyons Gerald Cambell (Cam), Alex Brown (AB), Mike Pugh and Kendric Lee ALL had “double-doubles” (double figures in points and rebounds) to lead the charge, but it was the entire team, everyone, who contributed to this win. The hustle and effort was off the charts all game long even in the rough stretches. The Clarksville Phoenix are a very good team. The gave it their all, but this time the Lyons came out on top! The Lyons are on their way to the Midwest Region Championship game to be played Sunday afternoon March 20, 2022 beginning at 4 P.M. Indiana time. TITLE GAME! The championship game for the Midwest Region title on Sunday afternoon March 20, 2022 was an exciting game! The Lyons were up against the number 1 ranked tournament team—the Music City Jazz, from Nashville, Tennessee. The Lyons had defeated the Music City Jazz twice in the regular season, including a game in February. That last game was won on a last second shot by the Lyons! Unfortunately, the Music City Jazz returned the heartbreaker to the Lyons. This championship game was fiercely contested and neither team could pull away. Both had leads of around 10 points, but the momentum kept changing back and forth. In the last seconds, the Lyons were down one point, had the ball, had a great opportunity, but the ball bounced off the rim, several Lyons leaped for an attempted tip-in, but it was just not to be. Both teams played hard and it was a highly entertaining game. Congratulations to the Music City Jazz! THANK YOU to thank Tyrone and Debra Brown for providing our community with such a fun and competitive team to cheer on. Thank you to each and every team member, coaching staff, announcers, volunteers, everyone, anyone, who helped to put the Lyons games on. Thank you to all the wonderful sponsors, who without them, the Lyons wouldn’t be as successful as they are! Thank you to everyone who has attended, cheered, and supported our Lyons! If you aren’t a fan, you should be! This is fun stuff you are missing. Indiana is basketball! Looking forward to next season and this exciting American Basketball Association team, YOUR Indiana Lyons fighting it out with other ABA teams. See you in the Lyons Den this Fall.
