A Canine You Can Look Up To
Local property owners are reminded a bounty is theirs if they remove their Callery Pear invasive trees. The bounty of native single-stem Pagoda Dogwood trees goes to the first 40 who cut down their invasive. Callery Pear can “escape” and establish itself in woodlands, taking up space the local environment did not intend. They shade out native species that are valuable to wildlife. Redbuds offered earlier are out of stock. The bounty’s Google Form application is accessed at https:// docs.google.com/ forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSetwo8fz_gly77-mcnz3EjRK9w1fmBYUd9X70PpkrQaV8APnA/viewform A photograph of the offending tree cut down must be provided with the application. The dogwoods are container grown by Woody Warehouse near Lizton. Tree pickup will occur in conjunction with Hendricks County Invasives Management Cooperative’s May 19 spring workshop on invasive removal techniques, and safety. ArborTerra consulting forester Mike Warner is workshop featured speaker. HC-IMC’s volunteer members provide education, resources and training on identifying and removing invasive species throughout Hendricks County. Call (317) 745-2555, ext., 3, for more information. In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month in May, IU Health West, United Way of Central Indiana, and Mental Health America Hendricks County celebrated with a ribbon cutting ceremony to officially open the Open Door Social Club to the public on April 30. Made possible through a $10,000 grant from IU West, the Club will provide needed social service support to consumers of mental health services in Hendricks County. “We are beyond grateful that IU Health West is financially supporting our mission to promote mental wellness in the community of Hendricks County” said Lael Hill. MHA Executive Director. “Open Door Social Club provides a safe social & educational space for adults living with mental illness or in recovery for substance use disorder who are treatment compliant. Members can explore through art, cooking, music, games and more. Life skills building, peer support, wellness workshops and educational programs are available for the people we serve.” Evidence shows that people with chronic mental illness engaging in a social club setting have a significatn reduction in hospitalization/crisis ER vists. It also shows reductions in incarcerations and cost savings compared to ther services. Members reported having close friendships with someone they could rely on when needed in THEIR social/ peer group. Statistics suggest that social systems like social clubs that offer ongoing social supports enhance mental and physical health. MHAHC’s Open Door Social Club is located at 75 Queensway Drive, Avon, in the south parking lot. It provides people with mental illness and addiction and or military veterans a place to gather and seek peer support. They have a place to combat isolation, cook meals, and learn new coping skills through yoga, art and music while being empowered to learn new job-hunting and resume building skills through the computer lab.
