Word From Poll Worker Editor’s note: We received the following timely letter from a reader and, knowing when when something is well said, we present it and its good advice to the voters. Preparing for the Primary Election Indiana’s Primary Election season has started with early voting proceeding Election Day on Tuesday, May 3. I have the privilege of working at the Danville early voting location for this year’s Hendricks County Primary. It is great seeing all the citizens exercising their right to vote. Here are some suggestions to help you through the Indiana Primary election process. Before voting, your first stop should be the Indiana Voter Information website. (https://indianavoters.in.gov/). At this site, you can verify that you are registered, see where to vote, and who is on your ballot. It is important to understand who is running for office to represent you. If issues like term limits or voter rights are important, vote for candidates that vote for issues you support. Candidate biographies that have been submitted to the Hendricks County election office can be found on their web page (https://www.co.hendricks.in.us/egov/apps/document/center.egov?view=item;id=4724 ). The Republican Newspaper is a great source of info about the candidates. If they are an incumbent holding an elected office, look at their voting record and government website postings. You can also use your smartphone or computer to find campaign web pages for candidates. Once you arrive at your voting location, you will request a Democratic or Republican Primary ballot. At the Primary you are voting for the party candidate that you want to see on the November ballot. Your vote in May is not a promise to vote for that party or that candidate in the November General election. It is commendable to show up and vote, but it is even better to make an informed decision about your choice. Voting because you like someone’s name or assumed gender or you liked their yard sign is not a good reason! Voting for someone because you assume their values align with yours because they have an R or D by their name is also not always valid. If you take the time to vote, spend a few more minutes to understand how they will represent you when they are elected. As a poll worker, I try to make sure the voter understands how the voting machine works. I tell them to let me know if they have questions. But the poll workers cannot tell you who to vote for. As a citizen, that is your responsibility to decide which candidate you think will best lead your town, your state, and your country. ______________________________________________
Sheriff Candidate Terry Judy Arrested on Alleged OWI By Melissa Gibson Danville Metropolitan Police Public Information Officer Nate Lien has confirmed the arrest of Hendricks County Sheriff Candidate Terry Judy just after 3 a.m. on Sunday, April 10. According to jail records, Judy was booked for operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI) and released at approximately 8 a.m. Sunday morning. Judy is running as a Republican candidate for Hendricks County Sheriff in the May 3 primary election against Dave Galloway and Jack Sadler. He retired from the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Department on Dec. 31, 2021 after serving more than 30 years. He was captain of the investigations department for seven years prior to retiring. Judy released the following statement: “Please accept my apology for using poor judgement this past weekend. I have spent my entire professional career in law enforcement, and I make no excuses for my actions. I will continue to consult with families, friends, and supporters regarding my candidacy for Hendricks County Sheriff and will make a decision at the appropriate time.” Whether Judy will be able to continue running for the Sheriff position remains to be seen. The Hendricks County Republican Party issued a statement regarding Judy’s recent actions. “We are sad and disappointed to hear the news about Hendricks County Sheriff Candidate Terry Judy’s arrest over the weekend. While we typically stay neutral during primaries, Mr. Judy’s decision to operate a vehicle while intoxicated goes against the core values of the Hendricks County Republican Party. As such, the Hendricks County GOP no longer believes that Mr. Judy is qualified for the office of Hendricks County Sheriff. We pray that he and his family find healing during this difficult time. We also encourage all in Hendricks County to think twice before getting behind the wheel after you’ve been drinking.” Requests for comment from the Hendricks County Prosecutor’s Office and the Terry Judy campaign have gone unanswered as of press time. This is a developing story and updates will be posted to The Republican Newspaper Facebook page as available. ______________________________________________
