Stem & Gem Spring Break
Looking for a creative way for children to spend Spring Break? Hendricks County Purdue Extension is offering to ways to use their time exploring Science Technology Engineering and mathematics (STEM) and mindfulness. STEM Makerspace Days offers two mornings of exploring STEM through hands-on stations, with activities including 3D printing, coding, robotis, circuits, construction sets and much more. Makerspace Days will be Thursday, March 31 and Friday, April 1, from 9 a.m. to noon each day, at the Hendricks County 4-H Fairgrounds. This program is for kids in 3rd to 12th grade. No 4-H membership is required and stations will have challenges for all abilities. This family event has discounted prices available for families with multiple children: $25 for one/first child; $22 for second child, $20 for third child. Contact the Extension Office and 317-745-9260 if interested in enrolling four or more children. No cost for parents to participate with children. Spring Break GEM Day (Get Experience in Mindfulness) places an emphasis on stress management taught through practical and interactive mindfulness-based activities. There are two sessions: High School Session : Monday, March 28, (Grades 9-12); Jr. High Session, Tuesday, March 29 (Grades 6-8), 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. (lunch and snacks provided. No 4-H membership is required for either session. Cost is $25/person. Participants will receive several take-home tiems for participating, including a yoga mat. This progeram is made possible through a grant from IU Health. School Reports In This Issue
This issue of The Republican contains the Annual Performance Reports for all Hendricks County Public Schools, which uses numbers to give a snapshot of each district and individual schools. Each report includes the school corporation statitistics, including enrollment, expenditures, teacher salary range, and other information. Sections are also included for the individual schools within the district, including average class size, test score averages, graduation and attendance rates, along with number of students suspened and expelled. Knee Deep In Summer At McCloud Nature Camps
Work to Begin on U.S. 35, Avon
The Indiana Department of Transportation announces work begins on or after Wednesday, March 30, on the added travel lanes project on U.S. 36 in Avon. Traffic will be shifted to the south side of U.S. 36 so work can begin in the westbound lanes. This is scheduled to be done overnight between the hours of 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. through Friday, April 1.This project spans from Shiloh Park Dr. to just east of Raceway Road. Two lanes will remain open for both directions of travel on U.S. 36. The primary purpose of the project is to reduce delays and improve the safety on U.S. 36 with a focus on the heavily congested portion between the Ronald Reagan Parkway and Raceway Road. White Construction Inc. was awarded the $8.6 million contract. This work is scheduled to be completed in October of this year. __________

Gardening for All Ages
Hendricks County Master Gardeners will host their annual Gardening for All Ages event on Saturday, April 23, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Hendricks County Fairgrounds. This free-admission gardening show will have 42 garden-related vendors, free vegetable and flower seeds, and trees, along with advice from Master Gardeners to make this year’s garden your best ever. A free insect-themed Children’s area will have games and crafts.
The Republican Plays Part in STEM Project The Republican newspaper was contacted by the Hendricks County Recycling District about a March Madness Basketball STEM project for elementary students. The idea was to re-use newspaper to make a stand that would hold a baketball for 30 seconds. Students learned how to make paper stronger by using it rolled or folded into different shapes. Some learned the thrill of victory, and others, the agony of defeat!

Fun & Games at Fairgrounds
The Hendricks County Extension Homemakers are planning an evening of FUN & GAMES on Tuesday, March 29. There will be a charge of $5 per table. Bring your favorite board game or cards and friends to play. Snacks and beverages will be available for purchase. The more you purchase, the more tickets you’ll have for the drawing of prizes. All proceeds will benefit Hendricks County Food Pantries. FUN & GAMES will happen every fifth Tuesday of the month: March 29, May 31, August 20 and November 29. Lizton Lions Seek Sponsors For Tournament
The Lizton Lions club is part of Lions International. The motto is “We Serve.” The Lions Club is a nonprofit organization that gives back to our community as well as national projects to prevent blindness and train guide dogs. All camps are taught by Hendricks County Parks & Recreation naturalists who have passed background checks and have experience in teaching campers of all ages. Lil’ Explorers, ages 2-5 with parent/guardian (older siblings agaes 6-7 may also register and attend. Sessions are Tuesdays, 10 a.m. - noon or 1-3 p.m. Children must attend with a parent or guardian. Young Adventurers, ages 6-12 (going into grades 1-7). These are drop-off programs on Thursdays, 10 a.m. - noon or 1-3 p.m. Day camp themes include Get Messy, Radical Reptiles, Mad Scientists, Tinkerers, and Aquabenders. Huge Garage Sale in Pittsboro
The annual Phi Beta Psi garage sale will be held Thursday, March 31 through Saturday, April 2, in the Scout Building at Pittsboro’s Scamahorn Park. As always, this sale will offer a huge selection of clothing, household items, books, toys, and much more. Phi Beta Psi is a national sorority which donates thousands of dollars to cancer research each year. Proceeds of the sale will support cancer research as well as charity and community projects closer to home.
