Country musician and modern-day troubadour Billy Dean will perform at a special benefit concert on Sunday, May 22, at 7 p.m., in the historic Royal Theater in Danville. All proceeds from the concert will to Suzie’s Place, a child advocacy center playing a critical role in investigation of child abuse and neglect in Indiana. Through the efforts of social worker Emily E. Perry, the first Suzie’s Place Center opened in Avon in 2009. It was named in honor of the late Lt. Suzie Austin, the first woman Merit Deputy in Hendricks County and advocate for child abuse victims. With branches in Bloomington and Terre Haute, Suzie’s Place conducted 1,457 interviews with children across 43 counties in 2021. Sights N Sounds Promotions for arranged the benefit concert to take place in the newly-restored 1927 theater on the east side of Danville’s court house square, an intimate venue suited to Billy Dean’s personality and style. Starting his career with his father’s band at the age of eight, Dean went on to win Song of the Year at the American Country Music Awards with “Somewhere in My Broken Heart,” and was named Top New Male Vocalist of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards. Joining Billy Dean will be local singer-songwriter Levi Riggs. At intermission, a guitar autographed by Billy Dean will be auctioned off, with the money going to Sports for All Kids, a local charity. The concert is presented by Hendricks Power Cooperative and Sights N Sounds Promotions, and sponsored by The Republican Newspaper, Electric Plus, Abstract & Title, WYRZ 98.9 FM, Florence Wealth, Irby Law, Comfort Suites, and The Royal Theater. Tickets are available at Eventbrite and also at North Salem State Bank branches in Danville. ______________________________________________

Hendricks County Sheriff’s Deputies and Brownsburg Fire Territory personnel were dispatched to Hidden Hills Lane off of 56th Street, near Brownsburg shortly after noon. A Deputy located the child in the creek and pulled him from the rapidly moving water. The child was unresponsive and received immediate medical care before being transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead. A three-year-old sibling appeared to have made her way out of the water and was transported to an Indianapolis hospital for non-life threatening injuries. She was treated and released. The boy has been identified as Yoel Michael of Brownsburg. 12% Turnout

In this week’s Yester-Year column, it’s noted the 2012 Primary Election was a “record-setter” with the lowest turnout in at least a half-century, showing only 22.44% of voters with a political preference came out to pick that party’s candidates for the General Election in November. The 2022 Primary voters said, “hold my ballot” and cut that old record in half with only 12.23% of registered voters participating. A total of 15,247 votes, out of 124,622 registered voters, were cast in the Primary. The bulk of them, 11,589, voted on Election day, May 3, Only 2,908 residents took advantage of early voting, which started in April. Mail-in absentee votes numbered 750. The Republicans had 70 candidates competing for nominations; the Democrats had 13 hopefuls. There were some close races throughout the night.
