Avon Optimists Offer Memorial Scholarship

The Avon Optimist Club is now accepting applications for the Charles H. Schoen Optimist Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is open to students planning to attend a two-year (Associates degree) program or other vocational-technical training. In addition to the many two-year Associates Degree programs offered by Colleges and Universities, programs such as medical technician, A & P mechanic, cosmetology, auto mechanic, EMT training and similar vocational studies qualify for the scholarship. One Scholarship is awarded every year for one year in the amount of $1000 per semester or $2,000 per year. Although one year we awarded two scholarships. Who is eligible? You need not be a student at Avon High School. Seniors at private schools and home - schooled students are also eligible. Requirements: 1.) Be a graduating senior. 2.) Be a resident of Washington Township, Hendricks County, Indiana. 3.) Intend to pursue vocational training. 4.) Stilesville: Every other 1st Wednesday, Oct., Dec, Feb., Apr., Jun. & August, 4-6 p.m., Christian Church, 8425 Morgan St. Pittsboro: Every other 1st Saturday, Nov., Jan. 9, Mar. May, Jul 10, Sep. 11, 10 a.m. - noon, Pittsboro Christian Church, 216 N. Maple St. Please bring your own bags or boxes. Open to the public; no ID required. ____________

Tox-Away Days For 2021

Hendricks Recycling District will host five ToxAway Days in 2021. All Household Hazardous Waste (chemicals, auto fluids, fluorescent bulbs, rechargeable batteries, pesticides, herbicides, etc.) is accepted from households free of charge. Fees are charged for the recycling of televisions, appliances and tires (over a certain number). Only residents of Hendricks County are allowed to utilize the District’s ToxAway Day events. Tox-Away Days are open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The 2021 Tox-Away dates and locations are: • Saturday, April 17, Brownsburg East Elementary School, 1250 Airport Rd., Brownsburg • Saturday, May 22, Hendricks County Fairgrounds, 1900 E. Main, Danville. • Saturday, July 17, Hickory Elementary School, 907 Avon Ave., Avon. • Saturday, August 28, Hendricks County Fairgrounds, 1900 E. Main, Danville. • Saturday, October 9, Plainfield Middle School, 985 Longfellow Ln., Plainfield. When you arrive at a Tox-Away event, stay in your vehicle. Volunteers will unload everything for you. Please remember that latex paint should not be brought to Tox-Away Day for disposal. Since it is water-based, it is safe to dispose of with normal household trash once it’s been solidified. More information about the Tox-Away Day program, as well as an online recycling guide, is available by calling the District’s office at 317-858-6070 or by visiting recyclehendrickscounty.org. ___________

LINK Public Transit Service

LINK Hendricks County provides public transit service to persons of any age (including wheelchair transport, portable oxygen, attendants, and service animals). Services are available to anyone needing a ride within Hendricks County. Those under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. If your child falls under the Indiana Child Seat Law you must provide a state approved car seat. LINK service is scheduled on a first come, first served basis, so riders are encouraged to call as soon as possible, up to three (3) months in advance. Curb to curb transportation is available Monday through Friday, during the hours of 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Service is not available on holidaysor when inclement weather prohibits safe boarding and/or travel. This is a fee-based service, $6 round trip within a town; $8 round trip within the county. THOMAS JERRY “TOM” OR “T.J.” HAYES, 80, Kokomo, passed away at 12:38 a.m. Thursday, February 18, 2021, at his home. He was born December 19, 1940, in Pike County, Ind., son of the late Rader J. and Esther Mary (Whitehead) Hayes. On April 21, 1996, in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, he married Marjorie (Lazaro) Bailey. Tom was a 1959 graduate of Winslow High School in Winslow, Ind. He joined the United States Army in 1959 and was honorably discharged in 1962. Tom retired from Duke Energy/Cinergy after 30 years of service. He was a member of Chapel Hill Christian Church and enjoyed golf, woodworking, playing his guitar, traveling and reading. Along with his wife Marjorie, Tom is also survived by his daughters, Meshelle (Mike) Fischer, Lanae (Darrel) Miller and Melissa Amerman; step-sons, Jeffery (Marty) Bailey and Neil Bailey (Alex Harper); grandchildren, Amanda (Tyler) Gordon, Emily (Jimmy) Boller, Michael Fischer, Grant Fischer, Megan Miller, Ryan Miller, Kilie Miller, Nick (Tymi) Bailey, Doug Bailey and Kara (Justin) Carter; great-grandchildren, Everly Fay Boller, Matti Jo Boller, Briggs Gordon, Boone Gordon, Dallas Carter and Lakelyn Carter; and brother, Foster Dale (Merle) Hayes. Tom was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Matthew Thomas Miller; and step-children, Michelle Bailey Brubaker and Bret Bailey. The family would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Annette Moore and her staff, along with Heartland Hospice and Nurse Lynn for their Care. A memorial service took place Wednesday, February 24, , at Chapel Hill Christian Church, Kokomo, with Pastor Steve Allen officiating. Burial followed in Albright Cemetery with military honors provided by the U.S. Army and the Kokomo VFW Military Rites Team. Helen was born February 27, 1930 in Lebanon, Indiana to Edith (Coleman) Randall and Herschell Servies. She lived most of her life in Pittsboro. She was a proud graduate of Pittsboro High School in 1948. For over 40 Years she and her husband owned and operated Frank and Mary’s Restaurant in Pittsboro. Together they enjoyed travel every winter to Treasure Island, Fla. and many weekends fishing on a pontoon boat at Racoon Lake. They enjoyed music and were fans of local musicians, especially Daniel O’Donnell. Helen also enjoyed travel with many friends over the years. She had so many close and wonderful friends over the years who took her to restaurants, traveled with her, and were great companions. She has suffered the loss of her friends greatly over the past several years. Helen’s family would especially like to thank the tireless energy and support Helen received from the staff of Brownsburg Meadow’s Assisted Living. They are grateful that, while she was still able, someone danced with her. Survivors include her son, Larry (Donna) Herring; daughter, Theresa (Lucian) Cooksey; brothers, J.R. (Kathy) Servies and Ed (Jane) Randall; sister, Cindi Armstrong; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Herring; son, Thomas Herring; daughter-in-law, Sophie Herring; brother, Gene Servies, and sister, Shirley Shelton. Services were February 20, at Eric M. D. Bell Funeral Home, Pittsboro. Helen was laid to rest at K of P Cemetery in Lizton. Memorial contributions may be made to Pittsboro Christian Church or Phi Beta Psi Sorority. ___________________________________________________ CAROLE FRANCIS CAMPBELL, age 85, of Indianapolis, passed away on February 17, 2021 at the Hearth at Prestwick assisted living facility in Avon. Carole was born August 27, 1934 in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late Emma Elizabeth Coonce and Charles David Coonce. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Jack Lee Campbell, and their son, Steven Patrick Campbell. She worked at Ben Davis High School for over 25 years. After her retirement, she was a substitute teacher for Avon and Indianapolis Public Schools. Carole shared her love for sewing with her grandchildren by making them various blankets, Halloween costumes, and one-of a kind items. She enjoyed fishing at their family cottage in Owen County. She was an active gardener. She was a member of the Avon Community Church of God. Carole is survived by her two children, Kay Ann Stine (Ron) and John Francis Joseph Campbell (Kim), along with her many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Private services took place at Conkle Funeral Home Avon. Carole was laid to rest in Floral Park Cemetery. SANDRA L. WHEELER, 84, Brownsburg, passed away February 16, 2021. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church and former member of Sweet Adeline Choir. She was a registered nurse for Dr. T.J. Moore for 15 years. She was preceded in death by parents, Clifford and Geneva Mahan; husband, William K. Wheeler; sister, Sharon Kernodle; brother, Clifford Mahan Jr. Survivors include sons, Jeff Wheeler, Joe Wheeler; grandchildren, William Wheeler and Kerry Spencer. Funeral and interment services were private. Memorial donations may be made to the Faith Baptist Church Building Fund. ________________________ SANDRA K. SHAW, 64, Avon, passed away on February 18, 2021. She was a logistics manager for Rolls Royce for 35 years. She was preceded in death by her parents William and Mary Ann Minnick. Survivors include her husband, Robert Shaw; daughters Erika (Andy) Spence, Caitlin Shaw; brother Michael Minnick; grandchildren Lorelai Spence, Remington Spence, Rowan Shaw.
