FOREWORD

Dearfriendsinfootball,

The Guyana Football Federation started

2023 with a focus to strengthen and grow the game following more than eighteen monthsofCovid-19restrictions.

I’m extremely happy with the steps we have taken over the last few months to increase the number of matches played and training and education programmes held across Guyana. We have delivered competitive football with the full support of our Member Associations and corporate Guyana, from the KFC Elite League and MVP Women’s Development League PlayofftotheTigerRentalUnder-13LeagueCup Championship.

We have focused on capacity building with an aim to increase the number of football players, officials and fans. This means, more funds were earmarked for Concacaf and FIFA training programmes, from entry level refereeing to advanced educational coaching programmes toensurerealgrowthinfootball.

Off the pitch, footballers continue to reap the benefits of the GFF-Macorp Excavator and Technician Scholarship Programme, while our national teams are making us proud on the international stage - the Golden Jaguars qualified for the June Concacaf Gold Cup Prelims and the Under-20 Women’s team gave a remarkable performance at the recent Concacaf Championships qualifiers. From infrastructural development to promoting integrity in football through good government, GFF aims to place football firmly in the hearts of all Guyanese. The federation will continue to maintain a strong momentum throughout 2023 as we build on our visionofoneteam, onedream.

A GREAT START

SHAVIN GREENE APPOINTED AS FIFA REFEREE

Afew weeks after Shavin Greene

was appointed as a FIFA accredited referee, he was selected as a match official at the February Concacaf Men’s Under-17Championship.

The Championship took place between February 11 and 26 in Guatemala with 20 youth teams, including Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and the United States vying for the top spot. Greene, who was appointed as a FIFA referee in early January, officiated his first match in the tournament on February 14 at the Estadio Doroteo

Guamuch Flores. Cuba was defeated by Costa Rica 4 - 0. “This is my first appointment as a FIFA official. I am grateful for the opportunity and I will make the best of it and make my country and familyproud,”Greeneshared.

week development scholarship programme which was launched in 2021 and has so far has 21 male and female footballers certified MACORP operators “The skills and the certification they would have earned is going to benefit them whether they choose to use that skill today, or two to three years down the road. For many of them, they are acquiring an invaluable skill at a time when the demand for skill labour in Guyana is at its highest in our country’s history. This is due primarily totheaggressive transformational national development agenda being pursued by President Ali and the Government of Guyana.

These young men and women will be much better prepared for life after football, much more so than many former players that would have paved the way for the bounty of opportunities this new generation of footballers are enjoying,” GFF President Forde said. Meanwhile, Escarraga added that, “the past graduates did very well. They actually attended all the classes and we had good feedback from ourtrainers.”

CONCACAF WOMEN

‘C’ LICENSE COACHING CERTIFICATION

The Guyana Football Federation’s

Education Department continues to focus on efforts to grow female homegrown coaching talent with 24 former and current national players, club, school and community coaches starting the journey towards CONCACAF W ‘C’ licence certification. The six-day women-only course opened on November 24, 2022 at the GFF National Training Centre in Providence, East Bank Demerara, with a strong showing from aspiring female coaches from nine regional associationsacrossGuyana.

Women’s Football Association President Andrea Johnson said it was a significant milestone in women’s football development in Guyana “Today is a historic day for women in football in Guyana. Never before have we had 24 female participants for any coaching course. For too long we have had a male-dominated coaching staff for female teams, especially national teams. For CONCACAF to be here in Guyana to do a C Licence coaching course for only women means that we are making another step towardsdevelopmentofthewomen’sgame.”

The first part of the “blended learning” programme, facilitated by Anton Corneal, CONCACAF Coaching Educator and former Technical Director of the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association, GFF acting Technical Director Bryan Joseph and coach Linsworth Gilbert, involved online theoretical lessons followed by practical sessions at the GFF National Training Centre. The internationally-recognised licence will give participating coaches the skills and knowledge to design and deliver effective coaching sessions for a wider range of players and scenarios, especially for youth football development through the GFF’s nationwide network of Academy Training Centres.

CONCACAF Coaching Educator, Anton Corneal,stressedthatthe“long-termeffectis actually growing the women’s game Countries are at different starting points and we try to meet countries where there is a need.

“There is a need for women coaches. CONCACAF has recognised that and has decided to spend a lot of time growing the women’s game. We need this effort; we need to ignite that growth.” Guyana is the fifth country in the CONCACAF region to conduct the ‘C’ Level coaching training which aims to provide over 300 women across the region with the opportunity to coachatvariouslevels.

GFF First Vice-President Brigadier (ret.) Bruce Lovell added: “In the foot-balling world there is a greater push to have more female involvement in football. We hear issues such as equitable access, equitable pay and so we are doing our part here at the GFF to ensure that we implement more programmes that will provide for greater female participation in the sport.” In 2015, GFF President Wayne Forde inherited an ecosystem of coaches with no valid qualifications.

The GFF Technical and Education Department has since enabled the progress of an all-time high 58 coaches to ‘D’ licence or ‘C’ licence level, as well as introduced a coaching philosophy and pathway to ensure a uniform approach to football development across the GFF’s nineregionalassociations.
