the publisher perspective

It’s here! My favorite season of the year is in full swing. Sunsets that aren’t til 9pm, lake time, beach walks, pool parties, flex Fridays and a more relaxed schedule are just a few reasons why I love summertime so much. I hope you are reading this issue pool side (or maybe you are at the lake or the beach). If you happen to be at Lake Norman, grab a copy of our newest magazine while you’re there! LKN Magazine is the most recent addition to the Forsyth Magazines family, and it has already been so well received by the Lake Norman community. We couldn’t be prouder of Keela!

We’re thrilled to feature the owner of the Barn on Country Club on our cover this month. Renee and her husband, Mark, (who also happen to be my best friend’s stepmom and dad) have created quite the retail experience. From gorgeous custom made tables to furniture painting classes and antique signs – they’ve got a HUGE store with something for everyone. You can read all about this gem of a store on PAGE 44

You know I want you to read this issue cover to cover, but I want to share a few highlights from our July issue:

- My mom and I had the honor of hearing Ray Singleton speak recently and immediately knew we had to run an article telling his story. Ray is a shining beam of positivity despite extremely difficult circumstances. Read all about Ray and his lovely wife on PAGE 28

- The Forsyth Mags Foodie team visited Ryan’s restaurant this month and, oh boy, we had quite the treat. I’ll wait while you pull up your Open Table app to make your reservation. Check out the full review and amazing photos on PAGE 62

- PAGE 18 has a pineapple mint mojito mocktail recipe, and it looks so incredibly refreshing – I can’t wait to try it.

Keeping It Real

THANKS FOR NOTICIN'

Do you ever have a moment that just stops you cold and keeps echoing within you?

My father taught me by example to honor and revere our men and women in uniform. I can’t tell you how many times I would watch him stop when he saw someone wearing a hat or jacket that proudly displayed their veteran status. He would say, “Thank you for your service,” and sometimes my daddy would even take the bill from their hand at a restaurant. It was his way of saying, “We still see you.”

Recently, my husband and I stopped at a little family restaurant in the area. When we walked in, we saw a gentleman quietly sitting by himself, wearing a hat that said, “Vietnam Veteran.”

Instinctively, I told him, “Thank you for your service.”

His response… “Thanks for noticin’.”

His response rattled within me, bouncing off every part of my heart. I just couldn’t get away from it.

I told my husband that I really wanted us to pay for this man’s meal. He was surprised but loved the idea. The cashier raved about how much folks at the restaurant loved this veteran and how we could not have chosen a better guy.

He walked out with us simply to express his gratitude.

My husband is Hmong. I had never even heard of Hmong until I met him. But it is a small people group in southeast Asia who significantly helped American soldiers during the Vietnam war. When our men (many still practically boys) were lost in the ravaging terrain of foreign jungles, the Hmong guided them. Then when America pulled out of Vietnam, the enemy launched a savage genocide of the Hmong people. I am still learning and have barely scratched the surface of this history, but the stories I hear…shattering.

Now, on this Sunday afternoon nearly 50 years later, my Hmong husband was able to stand with this Vietnam veteran and thank him. My husband was born in the United States and has no personal memory of those mountains and rivers. But thanks to soldiers like this man, so many Hmong were able to find refuge here. As they conversed, I could see the emotions fighting for dominance in the soldier’s eyes. Every sentence pulled back layers. For those moments, we weren’t with a decades-long veteran, but a soldier fresh from the jungle frontlines.

“I’m so glad your family made it over,” he told us. “There are so many people who should’ve made it back and didn’t.”

Haunting grief filled every line of his face. He asked if we had been to Vietnam. He said he still looks it up on Google Maps and is in awe how much of it looks exactly as it did 50 years ago.

We blessed him and assured him that it was such an honor to meet him. I got in the car to leave feeling so shaken by the entire encounter. As we drove away, I happened to look back. I saw that soldier sitting alone in his truck and sobbing like a little boy while trying to wipe the tears from his face.

Most of us cannot comprehend all our men and women in uniform have endured - the scars they bear. We cannot grasp the sacrifice of military families. My father’s family lived near a base during much of the Vietnam war. He recalls so vividly seeing soldiers appear in the school lunchroom, call a child out into the hall, and tell them that their father was never coming home. My mother’s family is full of veterans who wrestled the rest of their lives against those sights and sounds of war.

It’s July. This month we celebrate freedom. We can say that word so absentmindedly, entirely oblivious to the cost. But our men and women who serve our nation deserve better. So here and now, I extend my deepest gratitude and honor to the military families across this incredible United States of America—the land of the free because of the brave.

We still see you. We thank you. We notice you.

Real Life Advice on Improving Your Planning & Productivity

When life gets overwhelming, don’t panic; instead, try these life planning and productivity hacks. Whether you’re single or a couple, and however alone or connected you may be, it’s okay - and a very good thing - to ask for help sometimes.

We often place all our efforts and energies on crossing off our “to do” list, but what about focusing extra support on our “honey-do list” instead?

If you’re going through your “to do” list by yourself and are feeling overwhelmed by just glancing at it, don’t fret - you’re not alone. Hone your focus based on priority, and take it piece by piece.

Assign numbers or letters or colors to your top 1, 2, and 3, or even just the first item on your list. If deciding is a struggle, consider the two main factors of time and urgency. Consider deadlines. Consider personal meaningfulness in terms of your mission and values.

Think about how each priority can help move your planning forward. Which ones are most important and invaluable? Which items on your list are money making to support your income and livelihood and which are mission minded for a charitable cause?

Our thoughts, however important, can easily become “dust in the wind” if we don’t log them in our memories or simply write them down. Some of those golden nuggets that appear in our minds as flashes of insight or light bulb epiphanies can be life altering solutions and even million-dollar ideas.

So, if you’re tossing and turning like the waves of the sea in your bed and you can’t seem to shut off your mind, roll over and write, voice transcribe your thoughts, or record an audio memo in your nearest device.

Wherever you are and whatever time of day, don’t let those most important thoughts get away. And, for the poets and songwriters, think of all you could creatively compile.

Take the time, whether five minutes, thirty minutes, an hour or more in sections to document and record what’s on your mind and in your heart.

Decide to implement some health-supportive, positive productivity tips to get you going and stay focused, to maintain your motivation and momentum, and to achieve your greatest goals.

One way to do that is to amp up your awareness and maximize your mindfulness. The more attuned you can be to yourself - including your mind, body, and spirit, habits, strengths, and weaknesses - the better off you’ll be.

If you can better understand where all your time is going, your energy is exerted, and your money is invested, you’ll be more able to streamline your success.

No need for paralysis analysis or for getting forensically meticulous about anything, but go for a basic assessment and reassessment of how you’ve been spending your time, money, and energy - including downtime on social media and just “hanging out.” Taking this inventory will be helpful, even invaluable, to your productivity level.

Boost your brain, enhance your cognition, and stabilize your moods by opting for healthier foods, staying hydrated, exercising regularly, and adding the right vitamins, minerals, and adaptogens to your daily routine.

On the flip side, staying mentally, physically, and spiritually fit should not feel like a chore or be taken to an unhealthy extreme.

Remember to utilize deep, diaphragmatic breathing, re-center your positive perspective with encouraging affirmations, stretch and strengthen, and meditate and pray.

Whether you are more introverted or extroverted in nature - or feel they are of about equal proportions - being autonomous and independent are equally as important as connecting and maintaining real relationships with others.

No need to be dragged down by negative feelings like guilt or shame. Understand your innermost self and determine what your tendencies are with pros and cons.

If you find yourself alone a lot and are fiercely independent, spend more time with others and be part of a team. If you’re an extroverted social butterfly, set aside more “you time” and focus on being self-aware and self-care.

Whatever your plans, progress and productivity, take breaks and give yourself credit and encouragement. Be patient with the process in this journey of life as you live better!

Candice Martin | Modern, Stylized Landscape Artist

This month’s featured artist and North Carolina native, Candice Martin, turns ordinary everyday moments into truly moving, extraordinary works of art through watercolors, acrylics, and pyrography.

How would you describe your work?

I create a variety of watercolor and acrylic paintings, from florals and landscapes to portraits. I love painting in ways that accentuate the importance of light. I am also a pyrographer [pyrography is decorating wood or other materials with burn marks resulting from the controlled application of a heated object]. I am a fan of all things Christmas, so I create a wooden holiday ornament line every year, and have made hundreds of pet portrait ornaments simply because I love animals.

What influences your art?

My biggest influence is nature, as I’m constantly inspired by the everyday beauty around us: water, trees, flowers and the ever changing sky. I love to hike and take lots of reference photos to use in my work. Art exhibitions and museums are always inspiring because of the variety of work and creative influences on display. I had the opportunity to visit the home and studio of Gari Melchers in Virginia last summer, and it was so inspiring to see his work along with the pieces he acquired as an art collector.

How have you evolved, personally, as an artist?

I’ve tried a variety of artistic styles and techniques on my journey to find what works for me. I love abstract art, but have found the creative process and outcome aren’t always enjoyable for me. I find I am happiest in nature, and spend most of my time trying to convey that joy on canvas, paper, and wood. I’m still changing and evolving, and hope I always will, but I believe creating works inspired by nature will continue to be my main focus.

How do you carve out time to be creative?

I’m not always as successful at keeping my creative time a top priority, but I strive daily to make a conscious effort. I try to adopt the Ferris Bueller mentality, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” Life is going to churn along, with curveballs along the way, so I put reminders on my phone and in my planner, and set out projects so that I have constant reminders to stop and do the fun stuff. I am fortunate to have this opportunity, and I don’t want to be so bogged down with the chores of everyday life that I miss it.

As a member of several local arts organizations such as the Watercolor Society of North Carolina, Yadkin Arts and Ashe Arts Council, how would you say “community” plays a role for you as an artist?

It’s always inspiring to see other artists’ works, and to hear their vision and perspective for their art. I love seeing other styles of art, and seeing new concepts I never imagined in my own journey. It helps artists grow when we expand our horizons, learn new perspectives and techniques, and make new connections. The art community only makes us better.

What are you working on that excites you right now?

I am starting a new series that I am particularly excited about! My new project will take inspiration from nature in creating watercolor and acrylic paintings and pyrography pieces based on the same subject matter. Each medium will have a different focus - light, color and texture. I am nervous and excited to see how this huge project comes together! I also have a wide variety of commissions that are exciting and keep me on my toes.

What is one piece of advice you’d like to share with fellow artists?

It’s perfectly normal to feel like an imposter, to look at another artist’s work and feel in awe and slightly intimidated. It’s okay to have moments of fear when staring at a blank canvas, a lump of clay, a piece of wood, metal or fabric. It’s normal to have all of these feelings, but please make your art anyway. The world needs your vision and creativity. You are unique, and if you truly love making art, please don’t let those feelings of doubt and insecurity stop you. It doesn’t have to be “perfect” - it just has to be your voice and your vision.

If you are interested in learning more about this month’s artist, Candice Martin, you can find her work online at: www.yessy.com/ stonemarstudio/ as well as follow her on Instagram @stonemar_studio. For local events you can refer to her website for dates and locations.

Purpose Push:

Don’t Hesitate to Take a Break

As women entrepreneurs, we wear many hats that can add up to a lot of tasks, time, and stress.

In this society, where hustle and productivity are often glorified, it’s easy for us to get caught up in the rat race. If you’re anything like me, you often think about your future, which puts pressure on your present to get more things done. Though it’s great to think about the future for planning purposes, it can be overwhelming to cram things into our lives with no room to take a break and relax.

Today, we’re going to shatter the myth that we need to consistently grind to be successful. Studies show regular breaks increase productivity and creativity. So let’s make sure we are cultivating the best version of ourselves.

LISTEN TO YOUR BODY

Have you ever forced yourself to work on a task, and came back to it later shocked at the quality you produced? You end up changing everything, which results in wasted time you could’ve used to rest instead. Being in sync with our body decreases your chances of experiencing burnout. Make sure you’re fueling your body with nutrition, rest, and self care. God gave us the gift of rest and constructed our DNA to require it. Your body will tell you how to help it perform optimally but this is not to be confused with running off of emotions. Of course, there will be days you won’t feel like doing anything but recognize this is a mental state you can overcome with activities like meditating, stepping outside for Vitamin D from the sun, and getting deeper into your Bible. However, if you find yourself neglecting things that are routine for you, eating poorly, moving slowly, or feeling drained physically and mentally, it’s time for a break.

DELEGATE NON-NEGOTIABLES

Many of us struggle with relinquishing control and delegating tasks because we think no one can do the task the way we do. That is actually true but it’s okay because there’s more than one way to do something correctly. Embrace the mindset of the Proverbs 31 woman and take baby steps by trusting others with small tasks and increasing that over time. You can delegate within your business and family life, too. When you’re at your capacity, it may be time to see what others can do to help take weight off of

Sheridan C. Watkins is a journalist and the owner of Perennial Peaces, a jewelry and gifts brand focused on transcending self-worth to all women. you. You can do this effectively by building systems for others to abide by. The purpose of a mature business is to function properly without the owner being there consistently. Remember, you’re building a business, not a job, and what better way to see where you can improve your systems than by taking a break.

ACTIVELY DISENGAGE

Summertime is great for extended breaks! Most of us yearn for warmer weather and relaxing activities. It’s not just about physically stepping away from work but actively engaging in activities that bring you back to yourself and take your mind off your to-do list. Your journey is not just about working and it’s important to pour into all

the areas that compile your life story. Decide what actively disengaging looks like for you: Is it game nights with friends and family, chilling by the pool, attending some all-day activities, or going away for vacation?

These are healthy distractions that recharge your batteries and allow you to continue performing at your best. There’s nothing to feel bad about!

You are a hard-working woman and no one can tell you otherwise. But taking breaks are strategic investments in your long-term health and success. Business cannot go on if you’re not healthy enough to pioneer. Breaks make you stronger so make sure they are a part of your life regularly. I have faith in you.

If you’re already a loyal fan of Kitchen Tune-Up in Winston-Salem, you’ll be excited to add their sister brand — Bath Tune-Up — to your list of home remodel favorites.

The separate bath version of the popular kitchen design company came about in 2020 — with the same continued support of the national brand you’ve enjoyed with Kitchen Tune-Up, equally professional design guidance, and identical, stellar customer service.

“We were always receiving customer requests for bath work, but we simply weren’t equipped,” explains Peter Mahoney, who owns the Winston-Salem franchise with his wife, Rebecca. The home office noticed their multiple requests for bath designs, and the new brand was a natural extension of the Kitchen Tune-Up success.

“We can do anything you envision within those four walls of your bath!” adds Peter. “If you want to start completely over, we can help you create a brand new stylish design.”

The Bath Tune-Up team knows that any kind of home remodel is an important investment — and they want your experience to be as stress-free as possible.

You can jumpstart the journey to a stylish new bath with the company’s free in-home or virtual consultation. Maybe you’re going all in with an entire, fullservice bath remodel, or perhaps you’re starting smaller by updating a few accessories, such as fixtures or lighting. The team does both — and every other design option in between!

“We’re seeing tile showers, as well as the always popular quartz and granite, but can also provide more economical options for a client’s budget, such as some cultured marble options that have the look and feel of granite and quartz, without the big investment they require,” says Peter.

“For tile showers, we also have a supplier that manufactures a product called

Trust Their Expertise & Inspiration!

WEDI. It’s a total shower system, pan included, that is fully waterproof and mold-proof. The product goes on the wall, behind the tile, and is used in place of typical tile backer board, which does not offer the same waterproofing that this product does.” Bath Tune-Up is a certified WEDI installer, and can offer a 15-year guarantee against leaks — backed by the manufacturer.

As Kitchen Tune-Up offers, Bath Tune-Up provides their exclusive Design Tool — which you can launch right from their website (bathtuneup.com). Visualize your dream bath, while browsing a variety of available colors and finishes that have been carefully curated into stunning collections you’ll love — and that make your remodel decisions easier. You can even share your exciting design ideas online with friends and family! (Hint: Be sure to save your design before requesting a consultation!)

You may be looking to do a tub-to-shower or shower-to-tub conversion — which can certainly increase your available space. Replacing a tub with a stylish new shower can also reduce water consumption. If you’re opting to change the entire layout of your bath space, a new vanity may be in your future — and Bath Tune-Up has a beautiful collection of possibilities.

These are also the professionals to turn to if you’re planning a bath remodel to provide better accessibility — and a safer experience — for seniors. As they age, walk-in showers are at the top of many clients’ wish-lists, along with shower seats, handrails, the capability for height adjustments — even a safety bar to hold to, while maintaining plenty of style and comfort.

Current clients are quick to say the Bath Tune-Up team is professional, skilled at communicating all throughout the process, and always conscious of any budget constraints. Bath Tune-Up services the Winston Salem, Clemmons, Advance, Lexington, Kernersville, Stokesdale, Greensboro and High Point areas.

To begin your remodel project or bath update, reach them Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., and Saturday by appointment, at 336-296-9848. Visit them online to request a free consultation at Bathtune-up.com.

From North Carolina, With Love:

Your Guide to Sending a North Carolina Themed Care Package

North Carolina is home to unique treats and accessories, such as Cheerwine, Moravian cookies, and pottery made at our coast. When a person travels or moves away from the Tarheel State after being surrounded by the specialty items of North Carolina, they could start feeling homesick and get a craving for their old stomping grounds.

The good news is that they can get a taste of home (literally and figuratively) with a North Caroline themed care package, sent from their loved ones. Personalize this care package with items you know they loved and enjoyed, and build it around a specific part of North Carolina’s culture. For example, you could create a BBQ themed package, a Wake Forest themed package, or include only products representing our beautiful coast. You could also do a general Tarheel State care package, which must include certain items, such as the ones below:

Made in NC Tasty Treats: Food products that represent North Carolina and are made from NC-based businesses.

• Moravian Cookies - No matter if the cookies belong to Mrs. Hanes or Deweys, they are an absolute inclusion to a North Carolina themed care package. Don’t forget to send a box in every flavor, especially the original ginger flavor. Speaking of Moravian food treats, lovefeast buns and sugar cake are two more essential items to add.

• Dewey’s Classic Cheddar Cheese Straws - I love cheese straws because this savory food comes with a kick of flavoring.

• Carolina Kettle Down East Carolina BBQ Potato Chips

• Chapel Hill Toffee

• Accidental Baker Sea Salt Flatbread Crackers

• Sunshine Good Energy Drinks and Energy Waters - These bubbly beverages are filled with vitamins, electrolytes, and organic caffeine that comes in flavors of clementine twist, blueberry lemonade, citrus lime, and more.

• Cheese Bricks from Ashe County Cheese

• Asheville Tea Company’s Asheville Grey Tea

• Cloister Honey Straws from Charlotte

• Salted Caramel Poppy Handcrafted Popcorn

• Bertie County Peanuts

• Carolina Brewery Eastern Carolina BBQ Sauce and Carolina Dry Rub

Memorabilia and Keepsakes: These tokens are ones that showcase our beloved state through home decor or apparel.

• A state-shaped print of North Carolina - Take it a step further and showcase our state’s flag or a dogwood pattern as the print.

• NC Apparel - Fill the package with NC themed shirts, hats, and socks.

• Postcards featuring well-known sites

• An illustrated lighthouse tea towel

• Sports-related items - Is the receiver a Wake Forest fan? A Mountaineer, or a Blue Devil? Send them something related to their favorite sports team.

• Moravian Star Porch Light

• Sea Turtle Sea Glass Jewelry

• Pottery from the Seagrove Area

• “North Carolina Est. in 1789” Pint Glass or Cup

Born in NC Items: Originating in North Carolina and spreading throughout the country, these items will always call the Tarheel State their birthplace. While many of the products can be bought outside of the state, there are several that are only regionally available, such as Cheerwine, and just taste better coming from North Carolina.

• Cheerwine

• A box of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts

• Texas Pete Hot Sauce

• A jar of Mount Olive Pickles

• A pack of Lance Crackers

Whether you are sending a special surprise to a friend, sibling, cousin, or another family member, an NC themed care package will brighten anyone’s day and give them a little piece of home.

Ray Singleton’s Message of Life, Love & Hope

When our publishers were blessed to hear singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur Ray Singleton speak at the ‘I Choose Joy’ Cancer Survivors Brunch in Winston-Salem, there was no question they wanted to share Ray’s inspired message with our readers!

Born and raised in Charleston, SC, Ray graduated from Winthrop University, and later received his M.Ed in counseling from there as well. Loving the area, he decided to make Charlotte his home, and soon met his wife, Roslyn. If the names are familiar, a video of him serenading his beautiful wife before her second brain tumor surgery went viral in 2020, resulting in a heartwarming appearance for the two on the Ellen DeGeneres show in both 2020 and 2022. Roslyn had been first diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2013, but had been clear for six years, until a second tumor emerged.

No stranger to live entertainment, Ray also appeared on America’s Got Talent in 2021 — again serenading his wife and her incredible strength through difficult times. He says his songs for her were initially intended simply to make her smile.

When Ray lost his lovely Roslyn in November of 2022, he vowed to continue her legacy by devoting his own life to spreading a message of positivity around the world. She still inspires him every day. “I feel her all around me! She’s everywhere,” he says. “Roz was my biggest supporter in anything I did. She would come to my shows, listen to me practice the same song all day every day, and tell me how good I sounded.”

His love for her keeps Ray inspired to continue singing, performing, and reaching out to others through the magic of music. “I feel connected to her when I’m singing. I believe she can still hear me singing to her, all the way up in heaven!”

Though he’s been singing his entire life, Ray says he’s a “newbie” in the public speaking arena, and is still discovering how he wants his speeches to flow. “I gained notoriety by singing, so I understand that’s a powerful tool when looking to bring out the emotions in an audience. I want people to really feel after they hear me speak or sing!” he explains.

Listen to his message, even briefly, and you’ll see Ray is a firm believer that ‘things don’t happen to you, they happen for you,’ and that positivity is a daily choice. (Some of us, he points out, have to make that choice several times throughout the day!)

“I’ve found that I simply feel better when I choose optimism,” says Ray. “When I choose to see the silver lining in a situation, I can still find positivity because of my attitude of gratitude. I’m grateful for my life, my family, the time I got to spend with my beautiful wife before God took her back to heaven, and the wonderful experiences I’ve had so far in this short life. I feel more productive when I’m positive, and I feel like I attract more positivity by being positive!”

His message may also remind us that yes, life is tough! It can be unfair, unfavorable, and unforgiving. “But positivity is a personal choice, and I choose it as often as I can!” he adds.

About his music: Ray and his core bandmates have been together since their college days. “We’ve played small open mic events on and around the campus, we’ve played music festivals in Rock Hill and Charlotte, and been regulars at countless pubs and bars around the city as ‘in-house’ entertainment.”

Their repertoire includes music videos, weddings, birthday parties, any type of gathering that needs awesome music! “Our name is ‘Pull Up & Play’ because that’s what we do! And every single time, IT’S A PARTY!”says Ray.

That’s what Roz would want.

As an entrepreneur, Ray also represents Helping Hand Funds Recovery, LLC, an asset recovery firm that he started a year ago. “We assist individuals and businesses in filing claims that are open with their county after the foreclosure of their property. I not only run this business, I teach others how they can get involved as well. He also plans to hold Master Classes on the topic in the future. (Visit www.helpinghandfunds.com)

Often asked for his best life advice, Ray is all about honesty. “The facts are this: We are all going to die. What we do with that information now is what’s important! Are you more grateful for your family, your loved ones, your friends, and all the opportunities afforded you? Life is absolutely not promised! If you have the chance to wake up, you have the opportunity and responsibility to ENJOY every single second. Choose to live!”

To reach Ray, email info@theraysingleton.com, or visit his website theraysingleton.com (where you can also book him for your next event!) You can also follow him on Instagram @willie_qool.

A Faithful

The other day, I circled back around to one of my favorite books: the heart of the buddha’s teaching (lower case, yes) by Thich Nhat Hanh. You may know it. It’s back on my Sunday reading cycle as it’s been quite a few years since I’ve read it.

With a view to three dappled dogwood trees, I settled into my reading chair. A ragged newspaper clipping fluttered out, light as a butterfly’s wing. A makeshift bookmark, of course. My curious eyes went to the faded print and I paused:

“The ‘five secrets’...that underlie a healthy relationship or marriage:

• Hear and understand me.

• Even if you disagree, please don’t make me wrong.

• Acknowledge the greatness within me.

• Remember to look for my loving intentions.

• Tell me the truth with compassion.”

Wow. Timeless. But why had I made a point of holding onto this bit of wisdom? Of course, I couldn’t recall. Maybe because it was timeless and applied to all relationships that matter deeply. My mind couldn’t help but go to my Woman Tribe; regardless of how or where we met, some connection deeper than shared experience or circumstance connected us. Without exception, these ways of being and relating were alive and well. Foundational, intentional, sustainable, but not always perfect. I was reminded of budding friendships that were filled with potential and others that withered or soured unexpectedly. Almost always, I sensed one or more of these dynamics in play:

• Not hearing me and denying the validity of my voice.

• Making me wrong and setting up a win-lose.

• Minimizing my greatness, being dismissive.

• Ignoring my intentions; not allowing a space for my mistakes.

• Speaking without compassion, chipping away at the love between us.

Do the “five secrets” make a relationship endure? More specifically, what makes a female friendship ground itself and flourish? Yes, of course that GF of yours puts a crown on your head, tells you that you don’t look fat in those jeans, and otherwise makes you feel special. It’s all good. But when she’s really there for you, she knows how to be present with you, to you, and for you – through everything. And you know how to do the same for her. When we put those five “secrets” into practice, something extraordinarily enduring happens:

• I can be who I am and you can be who you are.

• I don’t try to change you and you don’t try to change me.

• We accept that sometimes, our “stuff” will get in the way.

• We love and cherish one another because of ... and in spite of.... fill in the invisible blanks!

As I drew in the beauty of the dogwoods, it occurred to me that friendship is about a humble and authentic faithfulness, not perfection. Then I brought that consciousness to the Buddha’s teaching to see what I could glean.

Summer is here and the heat has been turned up! Before you grab your electrolyte drink or soda, make sure you check the label. Is it truly hydrating you or making you more thirsty? And are you drinking extra calories that your body doesn’t need?

The average woman needs around 8-11 cups of fluids a day. You may need more or less, depending on you as an individual. Stop and think about what you’ve had to drink today. Will you get to 11 cups and what were your cups filled with? They were probably not all water. Water is the most important fluid to use for hydration, but let’s be realistic, we all want some flavor throughout the day too, right? A can of soda can contain around 8-10 teaspoons of sugar. And an electrolyte bottle can contain 11 teaspoons of sugar. Would you normally take 10-11 teaspoons of sugar and add that to your water? Probably not, although some of you may be adding that much to your cup of coffee!

A teaspoon of sugar is equal to 4.2 grams of sugar on the nutrition label. Check out your refrigerator to see what the nutrition content of your drinks looks like. When we drink our calories, we do not feel “full” and therefore the calories you are getting from sugary drinks can add up quickly, causing you to possibly carry extra weight. So what can you drink that has flavor but not all of the calories? The good news is that there are some low-sugar options in the store and some ideas you can make at home!

ARTIFICIALLY SWEETENED DRINKS:

There are flavored drinks that use artificial sweeteners to give them a sweet flavor. Artificial sweeteners can be listed under several different names which includes sucralose, Splenda, aspartame, Equal, Saccharin, Sweet’N Low, NutraSweet, Truvia and more. Remember, the additive is artificial so even though it’s not extra sugar, it’s still an artificial substance going into your body. Be wise and drink these in moderation, just like with sugary drinks!

Artificially sweetened examples: Propel, Gatorade Zero, diet sodas, Sparkling Ice, Mio and more

STAY HYDRATED STAY HYDRATED

CARBONATED WATERS:

There are sparkling, carbonated waters that have natural flavors and sweetness added, but without sugar or sugar-substitutes. These provide less flavor than other canned and bottled drinks, but are an option if you need a little more flavor than plain water!

Sparkling water examples: Bubly, La Croix, Spindrift, Pelligrino, Poland Spring and more

HOMEMADE OPTIONS:

You can always flavor your water before you walk out of the door for the day! Any fresh fruit and even some vegetables, cut into pieces or slices, can make your water taste great! They even make water bottles that have an infusion area inside to place your produce. The most popular fruits and vegetables to infuse into water are oranges, lemons, strawberries, mint and cucumber. It also makes your water look fancy! Do them alone or pair them together to try new flavors for your water.

If you focus on drinking a combination of fluids throughout the day, not just one type, you will stay hydrated without too many calories going in! Check out the nutrition labels in your home and at the store next time you go grocery shopping. You can even have a taste testing night to see if there are any new options on the shelves that you enjoy! Stay hydrated and healthy!

Making Dollars, Making $ense

Why Us? Why Now?

With a multitude of choices available to investors in this modern day, why would someone hire Marzano Capital Group as their Registered Investment Advisor or their financial professional? I have been asked that question many times over the last 20 years. In reality, the question is a great open-ended conversation starter and by the same token, a great way to introduce our firm.

Our firm is a growing talent pool of exceptional thinkers, hard workers, and problem solvers. Our advisors and our support staff listen well, they act and communicate clearly and give extra effort every chance they get. We believe that the most unique character of our company that benefits the clients the most, is that we have built a culture that fosters a team approach. Team players can sometimes be less common in the financial advising world today, as this industry has a tendency to be ego driven. Our team approach allows us to be more confident in our decision making and servicing capabilities, and allows us to lean on each other when the need arises so that the client experience is not compromised. There is a lot of truth to the old saying “it takes a village,” especially when you are solving for client needs and making sure that the client’s best interest is always put first. Due to our team approach, we have a built-in succession plan that garners young talent, finds the strengths in each person and builds out the workload to fit the employee’s skill set – whether it is comprehensive planning faceto-face in one of our conference rooms, talking through the minutiae of our financial lives, or in the front of the office where our support and operational staff are keeping the internal wheels turning for client service and appointments – we have a great pool of talent everywhere you look in this company.

As advisors and team members of Marzano Capital Group, we want the community to use us as a resource and call upon us when in need. Just like the many destinations that the summer months inspire those to travel to, Marzano Capital Group is a destination for those who are looking for sound financial advice in a clear and concise manner. Have a great summer and stay safe!

Total Time: 50 minutes

INGREDIENTS

2 salmon fillets

1/4 tsp salt

1/4 tsp black pepper

1 lemon, sliced

Lemon Herb Farro

1 cup farro, rinsed

2 1/2 cups water

1 bay leaf

1/2 tsp + 1/4 tsp salt

1/3 cup olive oil

Lemon Herb Farro

Candied Cashew Kale Caesar

Crunch Dill Radish Salad

Candied Cashew Kale Caesar

2 cups Tuscan kale, chopped

1/4 cup cashews, rough chopped

1/3 cup cashews, soaked in warm water

1/4 tsp red pepper flakes

pinch of chili powder

1 tbsp fresh rosemary, chopped fine

1 tbsp fresh thyme, chopped fine

1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped fine

1 tbsp fresh oregano, chopped fine

1 garlic clove, minced fine

3 tbsp preserved lemon, chopped

1 tbsp apple cider vinegar

1/2 lemon juiced

1/4 tsp black pepper

Crunchy Dill Radish Salad

1 cup radishes, sliced into quarters

1 cup Persian cucumbers, sliced

1/4 pepperoncinis, sliced

2 tbsp fresh dill, chopped

1/4 cup maple syrup

1/4 tsp salt

2 tbsp olive oil

1 garlic clove

1 tbsp dijon mustard

1 tbsp soy sauce or coconut aminos

1/2 lemon juiced

water to thin it out

1/4 cup Vegan Creamy Dill Dressing (I used Trader Joe’s brand)

1. To make the salmon, pat dry the fillets and sprinkle with the salt and pepper. Add lemon slices on top and air fry on 390 F for 10-13 minutes.

2. To make the Lemon Herb Farro, in a saucepan, add the rinsed farro, water, 1/2 tsp salt and bay leaf. Heat on medium heat and once boiling, cover and lower heat to medium low and cook for 20 minutes. Fluff with fork and remove the bay leaf.

3. Mix together the olive oil, herbs, garlic, vinegar, lemon juice, preserved lemon, black pepper and 1/4 tsp salt. Pour dressing over the farro and mix together.

4. To make the Candied Cashew Kale Caesar, add the chopped kale to a mixing bowl. Let your 1/3 cup cashews soak in warm water for at least 20 minutes. Use a handheld or high-powered blender to combine them with the olive oil, garlic, dijon mustard, soy sauce, and lemon juice. Add water to thin out the dressing consistency.

5. Combine the 1/4 cup chopped cashews with the maple syrup, red pepper flakes, chili powder, and salt. Heat in pan on medium low for 5 minutes, until the cashews are candied. If they stick together into one clump, let them cool and chop up again before adding onto salad.

6. Coat the kale in the cashew dressing and add the candied cashews on top.

7. To make the Crunchy Dill Radish Salad, mix the radishes, cucumbers, pepperoncinis, dill, and vegan creamy dill dressing together.

8. Add everything to your bowl and finish off with a squeeze of lemon. Enjoy!

Remodeling Starts with Us!

The Fourth of July evokes memories of crowds gathered to “ooohhhs” and “aaahhhs” at fireworks displays. This month is a wonderful time to think about adding some spark into your kitchen or bathroom, or new furnishings for your favorite sitting/living space. Invest in your existing home to create a dream come true. We recently collaborated with a client to furnish their new purchase of a townhome. The open space plan allowed us the freedom to be creative to meet our client’s desired look. They wanted a Botanical Garden theme for the entire home. Adding sparkle was easy with the theme we worked with. The townhome has two large bedrooms upstairs and a large media room, along with a large great room, kitchen/breakfast, bedroom/bath/office downstairs. Our clients tell us that they enjoy the central location and simple living. They downsized to a manageable size so that they can travel. Enjoyment is easy when they like lighting a fire on their patio and listening to music. They enjoy each other’s company. This will be their first July in the Botanical Gardens townhome for which they intend to watch the fireworks all around the city and welcome the “ooohhhs” and “aaahhhs” for 2023.

God Bless,

June

Psychological Safety

What is It and Why is It Important?

Have you ever worked on a team where team members:

• Concealed their mistakes and weaknesses?

• Didn’t ask for help or feedback?

• Didn’t offer to help outside of their area of responsibility?

• Jumped to conclusions about the intentions of others?

• Held grudges?

It is likely that your team didn’t have much psychological safety. This is a term that we hear a lot lately but what does it really mean? Psychological safety is a shared belief amongst team members that the team is safe for interpersonal risk-taking. Said another way, it means that people can bring their full selves to work, speak out, and challenge the status quo without fear of retaliation.

Why is it important?

Google’s “Project Aristotle” is a study of what made a highperforming team at Google. They found that psychological safety was the most important trait.

In teams with high psychological safety, members feel that it’s okay to make mistakes and be imperfect - and this leads to deeper, more cooperative relationships and elevated teamwork. Additional benefits include better retention and productivity.

Let’s talk about some ways that you can boost psychological safety on your team:

1. Make it a priority – Explain what psychological safety is and explicitly state that it’s something that you would like to work towards as a team When everyone is on the same page about what kind of culture you’re striving for, you can work together to create that setting.

2. Model it – Psychological safety requires stepping out in vulnerability. If you are a leader, go first and then recognize team members who are willing to do the same. If you aren’t a formal leader, be brave and willing to be vulnerable to help the team!

3. Facilitate everyone speaking up - Show genuine curiosity and be open-minded, compassionate, and willing to listen when someone is brave enough to say something challenging the status quo. Facilitate meetings to ensure that everyone has some airtime – not just the vocal members.

4. Understand and appreciate the strengths and differences of others – We all have strengths and weaknesses that we bring to the team, but everyone is valuable and has something to contribute to the group. Taking an assessment like the Enneagram, the Working Genius, or the DISC as a team can help with this!

5. Ask for feedback – Welcome feedback from your team members. Asking for feedback makes it known that you are willing to accept your own mistakes and work on yourself.

6. As a team, process these questions and develop a plan of action based on responses –

• What can we count on each other for?

• What is our team’s purpose?

• What is the reputation we aspire to have?

• What do we need to do differently to achieve that reputation and fulfill our purpose?

7. Establish norms for handling failure or mistakes - Don’t punish experimentation and reasonable risk-taking. Show recognition that mistakes are an opportunity for growth.

Also, try to avoid these behaviors that could damage psychological safety on your team:

• Gossiping and bad mouthing others

• Forming cliques or isolating others

• Dismissing the comments/ideas of others

Now that you have learned about the importance of psychological safety, implement some of these suggestions with teams that you are a part of at work - and even outside of work. It will make a big difference!

Hustle & Heart

5 Ideas to Get Out of Your Summer Sales Slump

This column is meant to serve as a resource for readers who seek inspiration and knowledge for building their own small business brands. Through actionable advice, find the encouragement to help you keep living your life with hustle and heart.

We are smack dab in the middle of summer, and while everyone else is dreaming about sandy beaches and sipping colorful cocktails, you’re brainstorming ways to fall out of the dreaded summer sales slump. Fear not! With some strategic summer promotions and a sprinkle of market research you can feel confident and turn the heat up on your sales!

Understand Your Target Audience’s Wants & Needs

Did you know that your target market’s wants, needs and spending habits change per season? Knowing what your customer wants over summer is the key to running successful summer promotions! Picture your ideal customers right now. Are they lounging on the beach, sipping ice-cold lemonade? Trekking multiple kiddos from playground to pool all month? What are their summer desires? If you’re not sure, create some surveys or do some story polls on your social media. Align your unique offers and promotions with their needs and preferences. Even your marketing efforts should be centered on telling the story that they need to hear in this season to help them become more decisive buyers.

Offer Seasonal Discounts and Create Summer Packages

Let’s face it, summer is one of the most relaxed seasons for most families and individuals. If your small business is facing a sales slump, it’s totally normal but getting creative about what you’re offering and how you’re selling it can make all the difference. Look at your offers up until right now - where does opportunity lie? Brainstorm some sizzling summer discounts and updated packages that make your customers say, “Yes, I need that!” Think of limited-time offers on summer collections or special bundles for services that may create more interest. Is there a free gift with purchase that could be enticing during the summer months?

Leverage Social Media in More Ways Than One

Did you know that social media use increases for most users during the summer months? Hop on your favorite platform and use eyecatching visuals that make people stop scrolling and pull them in with a strong hook in your content. Again, tap into your audience’s summer wants and needs, sharing photos and stories that pull them in. Engage with your audience and don’t forget that they love to be a part of the conversation! Ask questions, give them specific actions to take, invite them to sign up for email lists, head to your website or check out a specific offer. Consider teaming up with an aligned, complementary brand for a collaboration! Partner with fellow brands to spread the word about your summer promotions and help highlight theirs as well.

Host In-Person or Virtual Summer Events & Workshops

Summer is the perfect time to step out of the box and create experiences for your customers to take part in! Think about different types of events you can organize or sign up for that would help you get in front of additional customers and sales opportunities. Depending on your business, you can get as creative and embrace the summer spirit as much as you like! How about a rooftop cocktail-making class, a community sponsored pop up event, or even an outdoor “Sip & Shop” soirée with fellow women owned brands? These events not only draw in potential customers but also give you a chance to shine and show off your business’s unique personality.

The Rest of Summer Could Have Your Greatest Sales Ahead

The biggest piece of advice I can give you is to stay positive and challenge whatever narrative you’ve been hearing this summer. You’re still in control and your creativity and ability to change things up is in your corner. Running summer promotions with a strategic marketing approach can keep your business shining throughout the summer months. Remember to embrace your target audience’s needs, offer hot seasonal deals, create events to get in front of a new audience, and rock social media sharing all the good stuff your brand has to offer.

Now go make some waves this summer and turn that slump into your best sales months!

HUSTLE & HEART CHALLENGE

This month, choose at least one of the ideas above to implement into your sales and marketing plan to trade your summer slump for summer sales! Think about your unique customers’ needs as well as your time to choose the option that will bring the most success!

A Little Past, A Little Present, and So Much Fun! The BARN On Country Club

While treasures come in all shapes and sizes, you’ll find it impossible to leave The Barn on Country Club without discovering a piece or two that stirs a childhood memory or sparks your imagination!

Owner and manager of this Winston-Salem shopping treat, Renee Floyd, says her inspiration for starting the business almost seven years ago was the desire to do something she truly loved. Her hands-on approach finds her overseeing the shop daily, with team members Hannah Parsons and Jeff Hoxworth (who also happen to be expert furniture painters!).

Filled with home décor, antiques, and collectibles, the shop is a relaxing retreat for lovers of vintage quality and charm. If you’re contemplating a re-do at home, and want to keep costs down, consider the novelty and appeal of re-purposed furniture or light fixtures (that will look like new), while adding unmistakable charm! From Modern Farmhouse, Boho, Coastal, or Traditional, to Mid-Century Modern and Vintage, you’ll find something here for every style and budget. But keep in mind, as the inventory at The Barn on Country Club is constantly changing, if a certain item catches your eye — buy it then and there!

“If you like it, we will help you find the right place for it in your home!” shares Renee. “My favorite part of the job is seeing a customer’s face light up when they glimpse the right piece for their space!”

Sometimes that might mean dabbling in the magic of mixing the old with the new. Maybe you’ve fallen in love with a vintage glass pitcher in the shop, that takes you back to your grandmother’s kitchen, but could also be the perfect addition alongside your own set of eclectic teacups. Or perhaps you’re enamored with an antique mirror in one of the store’s charming vignettes, that might become the focal point of your new family room, becoming a treasure that your own children may pass down one day.

Weaving something that’s been well-loved into your own decor story can make for an interesting vibe — and certainly become an excellent conversation piece!

Renee offers some expert tips for choosing a piece of vintage furniture for your home:

• Measure your space before you shop. That saves you time, energy, and disappointment!

• Determine the look and feel you envision. How do you see a vintage piece working in your home?

• Respect the condition of a piece you love. Vintage furniture likely boasts a few flaws, but minor ones can be repaired. Plus, there’s always the option of refinishing a piece you can’t live without!

On the Road Again: Southern Arizona

Although Arizona’s nickname is The Grand Canyon State, my recommended itinerary for a first-timer’s seven days in the state involve cities south of the Grand Canyon. Because the natural wonder deserves its own separate itinerary, it’s best to focus on everything else Arizona has to offer this time around.

Day 1: Arrive and Drive

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) is your best bet for available flights, rental cars, and ease of travel. In a relatively central location, Phoenix is a great starting and ending point for traveling around the state. Rent a roundtrip rentl car and head 1.5 hours south to Tucson, where I recommend booking accommodations in the downtown area for access to excellent restaurants and local shopping. Grab your first meal in Arizona at CRUDA Mariscos & Oyster Bar and order the customer favorite “Arroz Marinero,” or seafood rice, alongside fresh oysters to kickstart your week.

Day 2: Saguaro National Park

One of Tucson’s biggest tourist draws is its close proximity to Saguaro National Park, most notable for its picturesque miles of desert filled with saguaro cacti – the most iconic, postcard-worthy cactus one could imagine.

Saguaro National Park is easily accessible by vehicle, but also includes numerous hiking trails leading to stunning views, petroglyphs, and desert wildlife. It is not recommended to spend a lot of time outdoors in the park in the heat of summer, unless you enjoy average high temperatures of 100 degrees Fahrenheit during the months of June and July. Fall and spring lend milder weather to the climate, making shoulder season travel [the period between the most popular and least popular seasons] more appealing for exploring desert terrain.

Day 3: Explore Tucson

While Tucson is smaller than Phoenix, it still has a lot to offer tourists. One of the most visited tourist sites in Tucson is Mission San Xavier del Bac, a Spanish Catholic mission built in 1797. With architecture similar to that found in Spain’s Andalusia region, touring the premises of the Mission transports travelers to Spain for the day. Practicing Catholics can attend mass at Mission San Xavier del Bac, while those wishing to solely sightsee can wander the property’s mausoleum, museum, and gift shop during the day. To read more about Mission San Xavier del Bac, visit the website at sanxaviermission.org.

Day 4: Old Town Scottsdale

Check out of your Tucson hotel room and head north to Scottsdale, sitting just east of Phoenix. Old Town Scottsdale is packed with opportunities for wine tastings within walking distance to each other. Spend the afternoon sauntering from Salvatore Vineyards Tasting Room to Aridus Wine Company Tasting Room, along with Carlson Creek Vineyard Tasting Room, and enjoy local shopping in between stops. After dinner, head to your downtown Phoenix hotel to check in for the remainder of your stay.

Day 5: Explore Phoenix and Tempe

Phoenix is much larger than Tucson and has much more to offer, including its iconic Desert Botanical Garden. Stroll one of the Garden’s many loops trails to view a wide range of mountain, cacti, desert, and wildlife views. Nearby college town Tempe sits alongside the Salt River and is home to Arizona State University. Walk alongside the river, catch a sporting event at ASU, and grab a beer at college students’ favorite local haunts before heading back to Phoenix for the evening.

Day 6: Camelback Mountain

On your last day in Arizona, hike one of Phoenix’s most well-known sites for one of the best views of the city tourists can find. The peak of Camelback Mountain resembles an actual camel with an elevation of 2,704 feet. Access Camelback Mountain via the Echo Canyon and Cholla trailheads and be prepared to sweat in order to see sweeping views of Phoenix and beyond. Due to its challenging nature, this trail will work up a major appetite for dinner, which should be had at none other than Centrico in the historic San Carlos Hotel. Dine on enchiladas and tacos and wash them down with none other than a prickly pear margarita to celebrate the surrounding Sonoran Desert.

Day 7: Depart Phoenix

Return your rental car to PHX without rushing to grab breakfast or lunch before heading to the airport that morning. PHX is well-stocked with eateries, so food options will be anything but scarce prior to boarding your flight home. On your next trip to Arizona, be prepared to head to the northern half of the state to see Sedona, Flagstaff, and the Grand Canyon.

EAT THE R A I N B OW

Eating the rainbow of color from foods grown in the soil is nature’s way of providing a multivitamin. Going back to the basics, just eating real food, can be a panacea for so many health issues! I want to break down the benefits of eating the rainbow, when to buy organic, and tips for getting your fruits and veggies in.

Below are five ways eating the rainbow can help optimize our health. Let’s dive in to see why our grandmother was right…eat your veggies (and fruits)!

1 - The benefits of consuming each color of the rainbow on a regular basis

• Red, good source of lycopene and capsanthin; protects against heart disease and genetic damage

• Orange/Yellow, good source of beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, and flavonoids; protects against cancer, can improve skin, and support vision

• Green, good source of lutein, chlorophyll, and indoles; prevents cancer and boosts detoxification

• Deep Blue/Purple, good source of anthocyanins and phenolic acids; delay cell aging, boost heart health and can protect against Alzheimer’s Disease

• White, good source of allicin and flavonols; antimicrobial, anticancer, and immune boosting

2 - Eating the rainbow satisfies our hunger hormone, leptin, the put-thefork down hunger hormone

Our signal of satiety first starts with our eyes. When we see a plate full of color, it registers to our body that we are getting lots of vitamins and nutrients in that meal. Eating color registers satiety so we aren’t reaching for that sweet or salty after we consume our meal. There is an epidemic of obesity especially in kids. When kids consume 1-2 colors at a meal (usually beige, white, or brown), their bodies know they haven’t received the nutrients they need. They don’t feel full so they over consume way more calories than needed.

3 - Natural color from the earth is full of fiber and water

Fiber helps with regularity helping naturally detoxify the body of toxins. In our modern day world, we are being bombarded by fake estrogens, obesogens (toxins that cause us to store fat), and endocrine disruptors. We can help prevent cancer and weight gain by consuming color. Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, and kale are particularly good at supporting our liver in detoxification.

4 - Vegetables and fruits cause our mitochondria to multiply within each cell

The phytonutrients from deeply pigmented, above-ground vegetables, along with fruits like berries, help uncouple our mitochondria. If you remember what you learned in science class, our mitochondria produce ATP which is energy. The more mitochondria we have, the more energy we create. A bonus is that we burn more calories!

5 - A variety of color promotes a healthy gut microbiome which can protect against mental health issues

Our gut and brain talk to each other via the vagus nerve. Healthy gut bacteria feed off fiber from consuming lots of color. Science is showing that a reduction in certain strains of good bacteria is showing an increase in symptoms of depression, anxiety and other mental health issues.

Five tips for eating the rainbow

1. Buy organic for the fruits and vegetables that make up the dirty dozen. You can check out ewg.org to see the most current list of fruits and vegetables that are heavily sprayed with pesticides.

2. Shop local. We are in the height of farmers markets carrying many locally grown goodies. This means your produce will usually be organic, and it will cost less.

3. Consume at least 7 servings of color a week, making the majority above ground vegetables. A serving consists of 1 cup raw and ½ cup cooked.

4. Make a goal to consume 20 different colorful fruits and vegetables a week.

5. Add healthy fats like avocado or olive oil when cooking vegetables. This will help the nutrients be better absorbed and taste better than steamed!

Celebrating

independence day: Local Communities Coming Together as One

Independence Day is a cherished occasion that commemorates the birth of a nation and the spirit of freedom. However, beyond the national celebrations, the significance of local communities uniting during this time cannot be understated. When local communities come together as one, they foster a sense of solidarity, civic engagement, and collective progress. Let’s explore the importance of local communities joining forces during Independence Day celebrations and how it strengthens our nation as a whole.

STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY BONDS

Local communities form the backbone of society, nurturing the relationships that shape our daily lives. Independence Day serves as a unique opportunity for community members to come together, regardless of their backgrounds, to celebrate their shared values and aspirations. By participating in events such as parades, fireworks displays, and community picnics, individuals build connections, forge new friendships, and foster a sense of belonging. These interactions enhance social cohesion, promoting empathy, understanding, and a sense of unity.

PRESERVING CULTURAL HERITAGE

Independence Day celebrations often provide a platform for showcasing the rich tapestry of diverse cultures within a community. When local communities come together on this special day, they have an opportunity to celebrate their unique traditions, customs, and history. Festivities may include cultural performances, traditional music, dance, and food that highlight the diverse heritage of the community. Through these celebrations, local communities can preserve their cultural identity, instill pride in their shared roots, and pass down traditions to future generations.

FOSTERING CIVIC ENGAGEMENT

The unification of local communities during Independence Day celebrations goes beyond mere festivities; it encourages civic engagement and active participation in community affairs. When individuals witness the collective power of their community coming together, they are more likely to become involved in local initiatives, volunteer work, and community organizations. This increased civic participation results in a stronger civil society, where people take ownership of their community’s challenges and work collaboratively to address them. Independence Day acts as a catalyst, inspiring individuals to embrace their responsibilities as citizens and contribute towards the betterment of their neighborhoods.

NURTURING LOCAL BUSINESSES

Independence Day celebrations provide an excellent opportunity to support local businesses and promote economic growth within the community. Local vendors, artisans, and food establishments often participate in parades, street fairs, and other festive events. By patronizing these businesses, community members stimulate the local economy, create employment opportunities, and contribute to the overall prosperity of the region. Additionally, collaboration between community organizations and local businesses during Independence Day celebrations strengthens the bonds between them, fostering a symbiotic relationship that benefits both parties in the long run.

Independence Day is a time to reflect on the shared values and aspirations that unite a nation. However, its true significance lies in the coming together of local communities as one. When communities celebrate Independence Day together, they strengthen bonds, preserve cultural heritage, foster civic engagement, and support local businesses. By emphasizing unity, understanding, and cooperation at the local level, we build a stronger nation from the ground up. As we commemorate Independence Day, let us remember the importance of celebrating not only as a nation but as active participants in our local communities, fostering a brighter future for all.

FIRE ROASTED SALSA & FLANK STEAK TACOS: A SIZZLING SUMMERTIME COMBO

If you’re a fan of bold flavors and a touch of heat, you’ve got to try this fire roasted salsa with some flank steak tacos. This recipe brings together the smoky goodness of fire-roasted vegetables with tender marinated flank steak, resulting in a mouthwatering taco experience. Whether you’re hosting a summer cookout or simply want to elevate your Taco Tuesday, these tacos are a must-try.

LET’S START WITH THE STAR OF THE SHOW.

The fire roasted salsa. Begin by grilling 10 halved Roma tomatoes, 4 tomatillos, half a white onion, 3-4 jalapeños, 2 habanero peppers (for those who enjoy some heat), 5 Serrano peppers, and either a cubanelle or poblano pepper. Grill them until they acquire a tantalizing char, typically around 10 minutes.

Once the vegetables are grilled, combine them in a blender with the juice of half a lime, a capful of apple cider vinegar (ACV), 1 tsp dried oregano, 1 tsp cumin, salt and pepper (to taste). Add the peppers, either deseeded or with seeds for an extra kick, along with half a bunch of fresh cilantro. Blend the mixture for about 30-45 seconds or until you reach your desired consistency. The result is a robust and flavorful fire roasted salsa that will awaken your taste buds. You can store this salsa in the fridge for up to 5-6 days and will make a couple of mason jars worth of salsa.

NEXT UP IS THE FLANK STEAK MARINADE.

In a bag, combine the juice of half a lemon and half a lime, ½ cup chopped cilantro, ¹/³ cup soy sauce, 2 Tbsp minced garlic, ½ Tbsp chili powder, ½ Tbsp cumin, ½ Tbsp paprika, 1 Tbsp black pepper, 1 tsp dried oregano, and ¼ Cup olive oil. Place the flank steak in the bag and let it marinate in the refrigerator for at least an hour. This allows the flavors to infuse into the meat, tenderizing it and enhancing its taste. Flank steak is a great, cheap cut of beef that will feed 2 people for around $9-10. If you are feeding four or more you may want to get a couple of steaks.

After marinating the steak, it’s time to grill it to perfection. Place the flank steak over blazing hot coals on your grill (propane or pellet grills work fine too, just make sure it is HOT) and sear it for approximately 3 minutes per side. This will give the steak a beautiful crust while keeping the inside juicy and flavorful. Cook the steak until it reaches an internal temperature of around 135°F, allowing it to rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing.

To assemble the tacos, start by slicing the flank steak against the grain. Begin with one cut down the middle, following the grain, and then proceed to cut smaller pieces against the grain. This technique ensures maximum tenderness and easier eating. Load up some charred flour tortillas with fresh guacamole, chopped white onion, the sliced flank steak, and generous spoonfuls of the fire roasted salsa. Finish it off with a sprinkle of fresh cilantro for an extra burst of flavor.

These are guaranteed to impress your family and friends with their incredible flavors.

4 burger buns

Chipotle aioli

Salad leaves

Pan Cooked Pizza

Serves 1

1 thin pre-made pizza base

2 teaspoons olive oil

½ cup tomato and basil pasta sauce

4 slices thin prosciutto

Mozzarella cheese

Basil leaves

*This recipe can be altered to add flavors that fit your taste.

In a medium pan, bring water to a boil. Cook the fettuccine according to the directions on the package.

In a large skillet, saute spinach in olive oil for two minutes or until leaves wilt.

Add in garlic and cook for one more minute.

Combine the shrimp, tomatoes, Italian seasoning and salt to the spinach.

Saute for two to three minutes or until shrimp is done.

Drain the fettuccine and add to the rest of the ingredients.

Sprinkle the mixture with cheese.

Combine apple, cucumber and onion in a bowl. Mix in the dill and drizzle with the vinaigrette. Season with salt and pepper. Toss all ingredients together. Set aside.

In a large frying pan, cook chicken over medium to high heat for two minutes or until done.

Ryan’s Restaurant

Steak and wine were screaming my name this summer, leading the Forsyth Woman ladies and me to satisfy our cravings at none other than Ryan’s Restaurant in Winston-Salem. Ryan’s Restaurant is wellknown amongst Winston locals for its elevated dining experience serving premium steak, chops, and seafood with a view. The main dining room is lined with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking oak trees for a rustic, tucked away feel.

Our fabulous waiter Nolan started the ladies and me off with tender Wagyu Meatballs in a house-made roasted garlic marinara, topped with parmesan and burrata cheese. We quickly noticed that these were not your typical run-of-the-mill meatballs, as the Wagyu beef and well-seasoned marinara sauce were in cahoots in making the appetizer one of our favorite eats of the evening.

Nolan next served us the savory Spinach Artichoke and Crab Dip with fresh toasted bread, which we helped ourselves to along with a crisp and aromatic glass of Matua sauvignon blanc. The Toasted Phyllo Wrapped Brie served with local honey, raspberries, almonds, and balsamic reduction also spread nicely on the selection of bread provided, setting the bar quite high for the entrees to come.

One of the evening’s most surprising dishes was the She-Crab Soup made with lump crab and cream sherry. Having never tried she-crab soup anywhere else prior, I have a sneaking suspicion that my first experience with the soup at Ryan’s will be a tough act to follow. Ryan’s Waldorf Salad provided us with a light intermission before the main courses arrived, combining mixed greens, Granny Smith apples, grapes, Gorgonzola cheese, candied walnuts, and honey-balsamic vinaigrette in a flawless ratio of sweetness and tang.

Although I am almost always a white wine drinker, to prepare for our meaty main courses, we ordered glasses of cabernet sauvignon to prepare our palates for the unbelievable cut of Wagyu we were served, along with the cold water lobster tail atop creamy mashed potatoes. Head Chef Luke McMahon’s formula for preparing premium steaks is unmatched, as words cannot describe the perfectly cooked Wagyu and slightly sweet lobster.

Just as we thought we were finished with our entrees, we were delighted to be served the Halibut Key West resting on citrusbasil basmati rice in a tomato-caper beurre blanc. When prepared correctly, halibut can be an excellent fish dish for those looking to dip their toes into the waters of seafood without diving in head first. The light, crisp Halibut Key West at Ryan’s is no exception, but not that any of us were surprised.

With so many dessert options included in the Ryan’s menu, we chose the Frozen Bananas Foster Coconut Cream Pie in a caramel sauce, which was the perfect tropical kick-off for summer. This customer-favorite tastes as decadent as it looks without the bananas overpowering the coconut flavor. We also ordered the Vanilla Bean Creme Brûlée because it was too tempting to resist. The sweet, subtle custard hiding beneath the crunchy caramelized sugar was the perfect dessert to end the night.

There is no dining experience quite like Ryan’s Restaurant in the Triad, so book your fine dining experience ahead of time online at www.ryansrestaurant.com, or call (336) 724-6132 to speak with a team member. Be mindful of the dress code and visit Ryan’s at 719 Coliseum Dr., Winston-Salem, NC 27106.

Fascia: More Than Just Skin Deep

Fascia - you might have heard of it. It is becoming more popular as the understanding of fascia has developed scientifically. But what might surprise you is that it is more than just the deep layer underneath your skin. In fact, fascia is a connective tissue deep in the epidermis that is connected through your entire body, from your ten toes to your scalp and everywhere in between. It is one continuous part of your tissue that changes in viscosity and depth depending on where it lies within, and it surrounds every muscle, nerve, bone, and every organ in your body. Sounds pretty darn important doesn’t it?

If you look at the world wide web and Google fascia, you will find some interesting definitions that pertain to automobiles, mobile phones, rafters and lastly, anatomy, defining it as a thin sheath of fibrous tissue enclosing a muscle or other organ. Without fascia, our hearts might float around our chest and bump into our lungs. It plays a vital role in the health of every part of our body and we can certainly even feel pain in our fascia. At some point in your life, you might have mistaken fascia pain as a sore muscle. Fascia is a tissue that undergoes change if the body requires it to take on a different shape in the fibers or a different density of the fibers. This can be something as simple as whacking your arm up against something - the impact can affect how the fascia tissue responds to protect the skin above it and the muscle fibers below it.

Fascia is flexible and soft and it’s mostly collagen, a protein that creates the strength and flexibility fascia needs to perform. It also has slip to it because of the hyaluronan (aka hyaluronic acid). This is what gives your skin the ability to glide over muscles. When we lose the glide, the fascia can have an adhesion, where the tissue gathers and becomes thicker and less slippery. In these areas, this may cause pain and would require fascial releases to break up the adhesion and return the fascia to a healthy state where the strands become pliable but strong enough to withstand high levels of tension. Keeping our fascia healthy should be part of our overall health. So, what can we do to keep our fascia healthy?

HYDRATION

Proper hydration will keep the fascia from becoming dehydrated. In addition to drinking your eight glasses of water each day, think about eating for hydration, too. Plant foods that contain high amounts of water, or something you might not have heard of, gel water. Umm, gel water? Yes. When you add on an extra molecule of hydrogen to plain H2O, you end up with gel water and it is naturally found in plants like cucumbers, watermelon, tomatoes, berries, lemons and even cauliflower. Some of these contain 90% water. So even the iceberg lettuce in salad that gets a bad rap is a very hydrating food, even if it is not carrying a lot of nutrients.

MOTION

Ever heard the saying “motion is lotion” when it comes to joint health? It also applies to your fascial health. Moving keeps your body and your fascia gliding. Stretching is a great way to keep your fascia long and strong by helping to break up any adhesions that you might have due to trauma or inflammation. Yoga, Pilates, and just plain old stretching are some great adhesion breaking movements.

TOOLS

Foam rolling is great for helping to break up muscle knots, but it is also going to help smooth out your fascia. This is a good practice to incorporate after any workout! Gua-sha stones work well, smaller ones for the face (yep, smoothing your facial fascia will help reduce lines!) but also larger ones for the body. Using the stones combined with a gliding oil will get your fascia gliding on the inside!

NUTRITIONAL COLLAGEN

Since our fascia is primarily collagen, taking in this protein will increase your body’s ability to build healthy fascia. There are a ton of collagen supplements on the market, available online, in the pharmacy. They are readily accessible but so is a great source of collagen in the grocery store. Shop the meat section for your body’s best way to take in protein since we assimilate the protein of animals better than that of plants. Hormone free, pasture raised meats will provide the cleanest, purest forms of collagen you can get. In the soup aisle you will find bone broth and a hot cup of this liquid will provide around seven grams of collagen protein. As we age, our body’s ability to produce collagen declines so getting in your daily protein will keep your fascia strong and healthy.

Tips for Keeping Your Pets Safe and Happy During the Summer

Summer is a season of outdoor adventures and warm weather. As pet owners, it’s crucial to ensure the well-being and safety of our furry companions during this time. From heat-related issues to potential hazards, summer poses specific challenges for pets. Here are some tips to help you keep your pets safe, comfortable, and happy during the summer months.

HYDRATION IS KEY

Proper hydration is crucial for pets, especially during hot summer days. Always provide fresh, clean water for your pets to drink. Consider placing multiple water bowls in different areas of your home or backyard. If you’re planning outdoor activities, bring water and a portable bowl for your pet. Additionally, consider freezing water in pet-safe containers to provide a refreshing treat on particularly hot days.

PROTECT FROM HEAT AND SUN

Pets are susceptible to heatstroke and sunburn, so it’s important to protect them from excessive heat and sun exposure. Provide shaded areas in your yard or use umbrellas or sunshades when spending time outdoors. Avoid walks during the hottest parts of the day and opt for early morning or late evening outings instead. Keep in mind that asphalt and sand can become scorching hot, which can burn your pet’s paws. Consider using booties or walking on grassy areas.

NEVER LEAVE PETS IN CARS

Leaving pets unattended in cars, even for a few minutes, can be life-threatening. The temperature inside a vehicle can rise rapidly, leading to heatstroke and potentially causing fatal consequences. Even with windows cracked, the interior can quickly reach dangerous temperatures. Always bring your pet with you or leave them at home in a cool and safe environment.

PEST PROTECTION

Summer brings an abundance of pests, such as fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, and flies, which can cause discomfort and transmit diseases to pets. Consult with your veterinarian to establish an appropriate pest control plan for your pet. Use vet-approved flea and tick preventives, avoid areas with high pest activity, and regularly check your pet for any signs of infestation. Consider using pet-friendly insect repellents to protect them from mosquito bites during outdoor activities.

EXERCISE AND PLAY SMART

Maintaining an active lifestyle for your pet is essential, but exercise and play should be approached with caution during hot weather. Avoid strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day and opt for shorter, more frequent sessions. Walk on shaded paths or grassy areas to prevent paw pad burns. Provide toys and activities that keep your pet engaged indoors, where it’s cooler, during the hottest hours.

WATER SAFETY

If you plan to take your pet swimming, ensure their safety and enjoyment. Not all pets are natural swimmers, so it’s important to introduce them to water gradually and provide flotation devices if needed. Supervise your pet at all times near pools, lakes, or any open water. Rinse them off after swimming to remove chlorine or other chemicals that could irritate their skin. Remember to offer fresh drinking water to prevent them from drinking from potentially harmful bodies of water.

As the temperature rises, it’s crucial to prioritize the well-being of our pets during the summer months. By following these essential tips, including proper hydration, protection from heat and sun, avoiding leaving pets in cars, pest protection, smart exercise and play, and water safety, you can ensure that your pets remain safe, comfortable, and happy throughout the summer. Enjoy the season together, making lasting memories while keeping their health and safety a top priority.

Blueberry Month:

Celebrating the Sweet and Nutritious Superfruit

Blueberries, with their vibrant hue and delightful flavor, are not only a beloved summer fruit but also a nutritional powerhouse. So much so that July is designated as Blueberry Month, a time to celebrate the abundance and health benefits of this small but mighty superfruit. This article will delve into the history, nutritional value, culinary versatility, and ways to enjoy blueberries throughout the month-long celebration.

HISTORY OF BLUEBERRIES

Blueberries have a long and storied history, dating back thousands of years. Native to North America, blueberries were cherished by Indigenous peoples who recognized their healing properties. It wasn’t until the 20th century that commercial cultivation of blueberries began, making them widely available to the public. Today, the United States is one of the largest producers of blueberries in the world.

NUTRITIONAL POWERHOUSE

Blueberries are a nutritional powerhouse, packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. These small berries are rich in vitamin C, vitamin K, and dietary fiber. They are also abundant in antioxidants, particularly anthocyanins, which give blueberries their deep blue color and offer numerous health benefits. Antioxidants help protect cells from damage caused by harmful free radicals, reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and certain types of cancer.

CULINARY VERSATILITY

Blueberries are not only delicious but also incredibly versatile in the culinary world. They can be enjoyed in a variety of ways, both in sweet and savory dishes. Fresh blueberries make a refreshing addition to breakfasts like smoothies, yogurt, oatmeal, and pancakes. They can be baked into muffins, cakes, and pies, adding a burst of flavor and natural sweetness. Blueberries also pair well with savory ingredients, such as in salads, salsas, and sauces. Furthermore, they can be used to make jams, preserves, and syrups, offering a taste of summer all year round.

HEALTH BENEFITS

In addition to their delicious taste, blueberries offer an array of health benefits. Research suggests that the antioxidants found in blueberries may help improve brain function, boost memory, and protect against age-related cognitive decline. They also have anti-inflammatory properties, which can benefit overall health, including heart health. Blueberries have been associated with improved blood pressure levels and reduced risk of heart disease. Furthermore, their high fiber content supports digestive health, aids in weight management, and promotes a healthy gut microbiome.

CELEBRATING BLUEBERRY MONTH

During Blueberry Month, there are numerous ways to celebrate and fully embrace the goodness of this superfruit. Visit local farmers’ markets or pick-your-own farms to indulge in freshly harvested blueberries. Host a blueberry-themed party or picnic, incorporating blueberry-infused drinks, desserts, and snacks. Encourage family and friends to join in by sharing recipes and enjoying blueberry-inspired meals together. Additionally, consider freezing some blueberries to enjoy throughout the year, as they freeze exceptionally well.

BLUEBERRY ACTIVITIES AND FUN

Blueberry Month provides an opportunity for engaging activities and fun with blueberries. Organize a family-friendly blueberry picking excursion, allowing children to experience the joy of harvesting their own fruit. Plan blueberry-themed crafts and games, such as making blueberry paintings, creating blueberry-inspired recipes, or playing a blueberrythemed treasure hunt. Encourage children to learn about the history, science, and nutritional benefits of blueberries through educational activities and books.

Blueberry Month is a delightful celebration of the sweet and nutritious superfruit that brings joy and health benefits to our lives. By embracing the versatility of blueberries in our culinary creations, exploring their rich history, and engaging in fun activities, we can fully appreciate and savor the magic of these tiny berries. So, let’s indulge in the goodness of blueberries and make July a month-long celebration of their vibrant flavor and amazing health benefits.

Pastimes of Days Gone By… fun things we used to do!

Many of us grew up in a world that looked totally different than it does today. We didn’t have cell phones, the internet, social media and in a lot of cases, we threw caution to the wind and didn’t wear bike helmets! (Pearl clutching everywhere!) I have mixed thoughts about technology, but I know it’s here to stay, and my children are “digital natives”... growing up with a smartphone pretty much attached to their hand. I don’t try to fight it, but I do love it when I see them participating in activities that now might seem “old-school” …the way I used to enjoy them. There are all kinds of things that seem lost to previous generations. Here are some that I would love to see make a comeback!

PLAYING OUTSIDE:

Saturdays and Sundays used to mean a street full of kids playing outside from morning until the streetlights came on. There would be bike riding, big wheel riding, exploring the woods, fort building, roaming the neighborhood unsupervised, grabbing drinks and snacks at whoever’s house you ended up at and going back out to explore and play some more. If our parents needed to find us, they would look for our bike or ask one of the neighbors…because everyone knew each other. This was my experience as a kid, and I know it was the same for many of my peers.

ROLLER SKATING:

Whether outside in the street or at the local skating rink, roller skating was a happening pastime back in the day. For me and my friends, we would roller skate in the street on weeknights and weekend days and then head to the skating rink on Friday and Saturday nights for some REAL exciting nightlife! There was the thrill of learning to skate backwards, doing tricks, visiting the snack bar for a “suicide” (all the drinks mixed together). Then the angst of wondering who might ask you to “couple skate” when those were announced and the thrill of standing under a number out on the rink floor while a giant dice was rolled to see who would win the prize. Roller skating was truly a lifestyle.

KICK THE CAN / SARDINES:

These games would most often be played when the sun was going down. All the better for hiding out! Kick the Can is a game in which one player tries to find and tag others

who are hiding before each hiding player can run to and kick a can which is positioned near the center of the field of play. Sardines is a really fun game that is played like hide and go seek — only in reverse! One person hides, and everyone else searches for the hidden person. Whenever a person finds the hidden person, they quietly join them in their hiding spot. Soon, the hidden group starts to look like a bunch of sardines!

HOPSCOTCH:

Who doesn’t love hopscotch? It’s a game of skill, balance and it’s super fun. There are different varieties of hopscotch which can provide hours of active entertainment to kids who love to hop around on one leg.

MARBLES:

You may think marbles is an old-fashioned outdoor game, but it’s also a game that can be played indoors. There are different versions of the game. Kids can even make up their own rules! It’s also fun to collect cool marbles and trade with friends.

HOUSE OF CARDS:

Building a house of cards is something everyone should do at least once. It’s a game of focus and concentration, not to mention a steady hand. Who will win? Will the human remain in control, or will the cards come crashing down? Trying to build a house of cards is a rite of passage, and also a feat of patience!

JACKS:

Jacks is a great way to build patience and discipline while having fun. It’s meant to be played with 2 players, but kids can practice on their own if they find themselves bored and without a partner.

STRING GAMES:

I adored string games when I was a kid! There are a ton of these old-fashioned finger string games like Cat’s Cradle. Mom’s Minivan on YouTube has an entire playlist of how to make different ones.

Beyond Independence Day

Continuing the Spirit of Freedom Throughout the Year

Independence Day is a significant holiday that symbolizes the birth of our nation and the values of freedom and liberty. While we dedicate a day each year to commemorate this important event, it is crucial to extend the spirit of freedom beyond Independence Day. Today, we will explore ways to infuse the principles of independence, unity, and democracy into our daily lives throughout the year. By embracing these ideas, we can foster a stronger sense of citizenship and contribute to a more inclusive and free society.

ENGAGE IN CIVIC EDUCATION AND AWARENESS

Promote civic education and awareness by engaging in ongoing learning and discussion about our government, history, and social issues. Read books, attend lectures, or join community groups that focus on topics like democracy, human rights, and social justice. Stay informed about current events and their implications on our society. By being well-informed citizens, we can actively participate in shaping our collective future and advocating for positive change.

VOLUNTEER FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE

Volunteering is a powerful way to give back to our communities and promote the principles of freedom and equality. Dedicate your time and skills to local charities, nonprofit organizations, or community initiatives that align with your values. Whether it’s mentoring disadvantaged youth, assisting at a homeless shelter, or participating in environmental conservation projects, volunteering allows us to actively contribute to the betterment of society and create positive social impact.

PROMOTE DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

Embrace diversity and foster inclusivity in all aspects of life. Actively seek out opportunities to learn about different cultures, traditions, and perspectives. Engage in respectful dialogue with individuals from diverse backgrounds, challenging stereotypes and biases. Support organizations and initiatives that promote equality and fight against discrimination. By valuing and celebrating our differences, we can build a more harmonious and united society.

PARTICIPATE IN PEACEFUL ADVOCACY

Exercise your freedom of speech and participate in peaceful advocacy for causes that matter to you. Attend peaceful protests, sign petitions, write letters to elected officials, or engage in constructive discussions on social media. Amplify marginalized voices and stand up against injustice. By advocating for positive change, we ensure that our democratic principles continue to thrive and that the rights and freedoms of all individuals are protected.

PRACTICE SUSTAINABLE LIVING

Promote environmental stewardship and sustainability as an extension of the values of freedom and independence. Make conscious choices to reduce waste, conserve energy, and support eco-friendly practices. Embrace recycling, reduce single-use plastic, and prioritize renewable resources. Encourage others to adopt sustainable habits by leading by example. By caring for our planet, we safeguard the freedoms and opportunities it provides for future generations.

FOSTER COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Build stronger communities by actively engaging with your neighbors and local organizations. Attend town hall meetings, join community associations, or participate in local initiatives. Support small businesses and local entrepreneurs. Collaborate with others to address community challenges and implement positive change. By fostering a sense of community, we create a supportive and inclusive environment where the principles of freedom and democracy can thrive.

SUPPORT HUMANITARIAN CAUSES

Extend the spirit of freedom by supporting humanitarian causes that uplift those in need. Donate to organizations that provide essential services like healthcare, education, and food assistance. Volunteer your skills to help disadvantaged individuals access opportunities for a better life. Advocate for human rights and social justice issues, both locally and globally. By standing up for the rights and well-being of others, we uphold the principles of freedom and equality.

While Independence Day serves as a reminder of our nation’s founding principles, we have the power to carry the spirit of freedom throughout the year. By engaging in civic education, volunteering, promoting diversity, practicing sustainable living, fostering community engagement, supporting humanitarian causes, and advocating for positive change, we can make a lasting impact and contribute to a society that upholds the values of freedom, democracy, and equality. Let us go beyond Independence Day and build a brighter future together.

Conversations with Your BFF

How Do I Handle a Friend

Dating My Ex?

About two years ago a friend and I had a discussion about some unconfirmed rumors she had heard from many sources that her ex-husband and one of their mutual friends were seeing each other. I even wrote about the chat in this column. She confronted both her ex and her friend and they both stated, with conviction, ‘We would never start seeing each other because that would destroy our friendships.’ Well, the ex and friend lied through their teeth, looking her straight in the eye. So, what does she do with this betrayal and the knowledge that all those rumors she heard were true? I am so glad you asked!

YOU’RE NOT THE ONE WHO SHOULD FEEL STUPID!

When you learn your ex and a friend are dating, you tend to beat yourself up. The little voice of ‘How could you be so stupid? Everybody and their brother told you something was going on. Even your ‘gut’ told you, but you trusted them to not hurt you and to act like actual people with a moral compass and

respect!’ Repeat this to yourself: What they are doing is so unacceptable and you aren’t the stupid one in this situation. Your ex and friend aren’t the people you had hoped they were.

PART OF THE ATTRACTION IS THE TABOO OF IT

Half of the excitement with a relationship that is unacceptable, especially for two narcissists, is the taboo aspect of it. Knowing that you are the topic of a bit of gossip can be exhilarating, but when they aren’t the topic of office water cooler chat, the appeal usually fades.

CLASS AND GRACE GO A LONG WAY WHEN DEALING WITH OTHERS WHO HURT YOU

Most people will tell your ex and friend, ‘We are so glad you two are together. You make a great couple,’ all the while saying behind their backs, ‘This

is beyond tacky!’ Trust me, no one looks at the ‘new couple’ and sincerely thinks, ‘It’s so strange how nothing went on while they were each married, but now they’re suddenly in love.’ When anyone shares with you that they’ve seen the happy twosome out, just grit your teeth and smile - in the long run that serves you better than saying anything you might regret.

AT LEAST YOU KNOW NOW WHO YOUR REAL FRIENDS ARE!

The fact that this ‘friend’ did this behind your back makes you insecure about your other girl friends. You probably shared secrets about your marriage and ex with this former friend and now she’s dating the guy she agreed was not the best guy in the world and agreed that you deserved so much better than your ex, yet he is good enough for her. Hmmm, interesting, isn’t it? Don’t shoulder this hurt on your own; rely on your friends and let them know the pain you’re experiencing. Truth be told, your true friends probably saw through the denials from your ex and former friend long before their betrayal came out. An objective observer can usually spot two snakes in the grass long before the snakes bite you!

FOCUS ON YOUR OWN LIFE AND ENRICHING IT WITH JOY AND LOVE

In the end, it really doesn’t matter what he or she is doing and what they are doing together. What matters is YOU and how you are living your best life, finding joy, loving, and experiencing each day with those you love and that love you. You no longer need to waste time on your ex, his family and friends, your former friend, and putting energy into defending them to rumors or wondering what, if anything, is going on. Things have been made clear and that is freeing. You now know the quality of people you were dealing with. Anyone who would hurt you to this degree, never apologizing or acknowledging that you were hurt, disrespected, and ignored, is no one you should want to even admit to ever knowing or being in a relationship with. Selfish, narcissistic people with poor character, who see only themselves are a dime a dozen these days and being rid of them is a good thing. You may even want to rid yourself of those you know covered for your ex and friend when the rumors were flying fast and furious. Birds of a feather flock together and you don’t need them in your life either.
