Publisher Perspective THREE YEARS OF LKN MAGAZINE:
THEN VS. NOW…AND STILL LOVING EVERY SECOND
When we launched LKN Magazine in September 2022, we never imagined just how much this journey would mean — or how many incredible people we’d meet along the way. From day one, our mission has been to celebrate life at the lake: the people, the businesses, and the stories that make this community so special.
We thought we were building a magazine… but what we really built was a community — and so many friendships we never saw coming.
Over these past three years, we’ve had the honor of spotlighting community leaders, nonprofits that are changing lives, brand-new ventures, and beloved local staples. The trust this community has placed in us is humbling. Your belief in our mission makes us work harder than ever to grow your brand, share your story, and amplify your voice.
A big part of our story starts with Forsyth Woman—the magazine I founded in WinstonSalem back in 2005, the one that started it all. This month we celebrate its 20th anniversary (!), and today it’s led by my daughter and right hand, Brooke Culler. None of these magazines would exist without her. She keeps me grounded, brings calm to my chaos, and can talk me out of a bad day like no one else. Brooke recently married the love of her life and together they’re building a thriving fitness community through Washington Park CrossFit. She’s also the best dog mom ever. (She always says she’s building

community through fitness and media — and I think that sums her up perfectly.)
And I wouldn’t be here without these incredible people:
My parents, Charlie and Marianne, who support this magazine in every way imaginable — including delivering to 50+ spots every single month. They’re amazing ambassadors, and even more amazing grandparents to eight grandchildren and one very loved great-granddaughter.
Tim (aka Teej), my husband of over 40 years — the guy behind the wheel, behind the scenes, behind the playlist… and always behind me cheering me on. He will always be my #1.
Kate Shaw — our magic maker. She is such a talented designer and somehow each issue we create together is better than the last. We collaborate seamlessly — which says a lot, because (ask Brooke!) I’m not the easiest. I truly credit Kate, along with the rest of our incredible team, for the success we’ve achieved in just three short years.
Martie Emory, whose writing (and heart) has shaped so many of our favorite stories. More than a writer, she’s a dear friend and devoted community supporter.
Shonda Bravinder, who says “I’ve got you” more than anyone I know — and always means it. Her loyalty has no conditions.

Kasey Jamison, forever a part of this team, even from Australia. Her surprise summer visit (with baby Goldie, two sweet boys, and husband Rocky in tow!) was such a gift — and saying goodbye again wasn’t easy.
We’re also growing in exciting ways!

Ingrid Russell is our new Social Media Director, helping us elevate our presence online with creativity, heart, and a camera in hand. We can’t wait for the stories she’ll help us tell.

Dove House Children’s Advocacy Center
CONNECTING FOR THE CHILDREN
By MARTIE EMORY
With teamwork at its heart, Dove House Children’s Advocacy Center is stronger than ever — fueled by the dedication of its staff and the vision of its leadership. Executive Director Beth McKeithan and Director of Development Amy Stevens work side by side, blending passion and purpose to build a thriving, sustainable future for the organization. “Our goal,” Amy shares, “is to ensure these much-needed services will always be here for the children who need them most.”
“Beth and I have a synergy that I would call somewhat magical,” says Amy. “We can often finish each other’s thoughts.”
Both share an unwavering commitment to the mission: supporting the investigation, prosecution, therapy, and follow-up of reported child sexual abuse and assault cases in Iredell and Alexander counties.
Beth, a Lake Norman native and certified Child Forensic Interviewer, brings years of nonprofit and child advocacy experience, including service in the Peace Corps. Amy, who first connected with Dove House at its inaugural fundraising event in 2002, has
served as a volunteer, board member, and now key staff member.
Beth and Amy work tirelessly to generate investments from the community to support the important work of Dove House. “We are truly fortunate to be part of a community that responds with such generosity and compassion,” says Beth. None of it would be possible without the amazing staff, board, and multidisciplinary team — comprised of law enforcement, DSS, mental health providers, the District Attorney’s office, Guardian ad Litem, and others — meeting once a month to ensure no child falls through the cracks.
“Our team is the best in the state; they run to the darkest corners to fight for the children we serve. They are truly superheroes,” says Beth. Professionals in this field need a strong combination of skills and qualities, including empathy, communication, crisis intervention, cultural competence, knowledge of child development and relevant laws, stress management skills, and a commitment to continuous learning and self-care.
Inside its welcoming facility, children find safety, comfort, and support from advocates who greet them with warmth, snacks, and a safe space to tell their story. “Our job is to be neutral, gather facts, and reduce trauma,” Beth explains. “It’s about working together as a team to protect children.” Dove House is planning to expand its services to meet the growing needs of children in the community. Please consider donating to help support these children in crisis who so desperately need our help.
SAVE THE DATE: CHILDREN’S VOICE LUNCHEON
Dove House invites you to join them on Tuesday, October 21 at the Charles Mack Citizens Center in Mooresville. The free event includes lunch and features speaker Allegra Hope, Victim Advocate for Dove House. The team is seeking approximately 50 Table Captains to fill tables of eight. For details or to sign up, email amy@dovehouse.us or call 704.883.9814, ext. 103.

TOP 10 TIPS WHEN YOU’RE INVITED ON A
FRIEND’S BOAT IN 2025: Lake Norman Edition
By KENYON STANLEY, DETAILS MATTER NC
Congratulations—you did it! You scored the Holy Grail of Lake Norman social life: a coveted boat invite. Whether it came from years of strategic Instagram comments or simply being in the right driveway at the right time, you’re headed out on the lake.
But before you roll up with a half-eaten granola bar and 13 hard seltzers just for yourself, let’s set some ground rules. Because boaters talk. And if you show up unprepared, rude, or reckless, you won’t be invited back— and that “next time” text? Lost forever in the group chat.
Here are the Top 10 Tips to make sure you don’t become a cautionary tale on Lake Norman.
1. Bring Real Food—Not Sad Snacks
Boat days are marathons, not sprints. A sleeve of crackers and gas station jerky won’t cut it. Think sandwiches, fruit, chips—maybe even a little charcuterie action.
Pro tip: show up with Publix subs and a side of pickle spears, and you just might be crowned MVP.
2. Stock Your Cooler (And Don’t Forget Water)
The drinks-to-people ratio never adds up. Bring more than you think you’ll need, and always include non-alcoholic options. Hydration isn’t weakness—it’s how you avoid passing out in a damp towel while your friends document your downfall on TikTok. And never assume there’s room in someone else’s cooler. If you didn’t bring the boat, don’t bring assumptions.
3. No Surprise +1s or Pets
A boat invite is like a wedding invitation: it doesn’t come with a plus-one unless clearly stated. And unless the dog was also personally invited, leave them at home. Lake Norman boats don’t come with expandable square footage.
4. Don’t Litter—Ever
It’s illegal, disgusting, and a fast way to get banned from every future boat day. Bring a trash bag and use it. Bonus points if you scoop out stray litter floating by. That’s how legends are made.
5. Ask Before Lighting Anything
Your friend’s boat isn’t your personal cigar lounge. Ask before lighting anything— cigarettes, cigars, incense. Vinyl seats melt, people breathe, and nobody wants to dodge your ashes while enjoying the breeze. And never—ever—flick a butt in the lake.
6. Pack Like You’ve Done This Before
Want to be the guest who gets invited back? Pack smart. That means:
• Sunscreen (the real kind, not SPF 4 tanning oil)
• A decent towel
• Sunglasses
• A hat
• Your own drinks and snacks
• Flip flops
• A charged phone (for photos, not DJ battles)
And a quick PSA on sunscreen: spray sunscreen stays off the boat seats. No one wants to slide around like a greased otter. But before you start spraying on the dock, ask first! Some materials, like Trex decking, can stain from sunscreen spray. The boat owner may prefer you step onto the grass instead. A little courtesy goes a long way when it comes to protecting their setup—and your invitation status.
7. Respect the Captain
They’re not just steering—they’re responsible for your safety. When they talk, you listen. If they say sit down, sit. Don’t touch buttons, don’t hijack the Bluetooth, and don’t offer to “help drive” unless asked. This isn’t a democracy—it’s a floating kingdom, and they’re in charge.
8. Safety First. Always.
We love a good party, but don’t be that guy. No backflips off the bimini, no “film this” stunts near the prop, and definitely no diving where you can’t see bottom. This isn’t Jackass: Lake Edition. Keep it safe, keep it classy.
9. Follow Boat Etiquette
Treat the boat like someone’s home—because it is. Don’t step on seats, don’t start the engine, and don’t toss your wet towel on the electronics. Be helpful when asked. Otherwise, be scenery.
10. Be On Time and Help Clean Up
The boat isn’t a city bus—it won’t circle back. Show up early, packed and ready. And when it’s time to dock, don’t leap off like an action hero. Wait for the boat to stop, gather your things, and ask how you can help clean up.
And if this isn’t your first ride this summer? Offer to chip in for gas. Boats don’t run on vibes and playlists.
FINAL THOUGHT:
Being invited onto a boat is a privilege. Being invited back is an honor. So act like it. Pack smart, be cool, clean up after yourself, and you might just earn a standing invite for the next Saturday cove cruise.
And if you happen to spill a drink or leave behind a Slim Jim wrapper, we’ve got you. At Details Matter NC, we’ve seen it all—and cleaned it all. Call or text us at 704-302-5873 or email kenyon@detailsmatternc.com to help your friend’s boat shine and secure your next Lake Norman invite.
Dynamis Estate Wines
SEPTEMBER’S
PROMISE
By MATTHEW WILSON, MARKETING COORDINATOR AT DYNAMIS ESTATE WINES
September in the Blue Ridge Foothills is a time for new things. A season when the weather begins to shake off summer’s warm embrace, as if turning a page to something new yet deeply familiar. One of the first places to feel that shift sits atop a lone mountain in the foothills. The winding road to Dynamis Estate Wines curves past acres of ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, their clusters heavy on the vine, their colors deepening from pale green to rich purple. The vineyard leaves are beginning to blush with amber at the edges as autumn quietly seeps into the landscape.
Guests arriving at the tasting lodge are welcomed onto the open terrace. With views stretching across vinecovered hills into the distance. At this point the Estate Wine Tasting begins. It is a curated flight of five current releases; each poured with thoughtful commentary about the land and the craft behind each wine from a wine ambassador. The first in the lineup is the 2022 Sauvignon Blanc, opening with aromas of apricot, and peach while the palate moves from creamy lemon curd to honeydew melon and stone fruit, finishing crisp and clean. The 2024 Rosé is a Bordeaux-inspired blend of Merlot and Malbec, with fragrant notes of strawberry, guava, kiwi, and melon, offering bright acidity and a bonedry finish.
Moving into the reds starts with the 2021 Alpha. The blend leans heavily on Cabernet Sauvignon and offers silky tannins under layers of black cherry, cassis, vanilla bean, and spice. The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is the second vintage of varietal cabernet. Crafted only from the best rows in the vineyard. It shows black cherry, currant, cedar, herbs de Provence, spearmint, and a hint of clove. Its mediumplus body and integrated tannins lead into a rich, juicy
finish. At the end of the flight the flagship 2021 The Mountain presents intense blackcurrant, cherry, and plum supported by eucalyptus, spearmint, forest floor, cocoa, espresso, and vanilla aromas. It is big and concentrated with balanced acidity and a long, complex finish.
For those seeking more than a tasting, The Dynamis Experience offers a guided look into the heart of the estate. Guides describe the unique schist and gneiss soils; the same types found in renowned winemaking regions across the world. They explain how the elevation of 1,640 feet shapes the vines, giving the wines their structure and character. The tour moves through vineyard rows and orchards, past weathered fences that speak to the land’s long agricultural history, before climbing to the estate house at the very top of the mountain.
From the overlook, the Blue Ridge Mountains rise softly in the distance, their peaks muted by the haze of late-summer light. Below, the Yadkin Valley spreads wide, dotted with farms, country houses, and patchwork fields that have been tended for generations. The scene feels unhurried and calm. Visitors pause here, taking in the stillness and the sense that the seasons are always shifting, quietly shaping the stories that will eventually be poured into every glass of wine.
By late afternoon the terrace again becomes the ideal place to linger. Glasses catch the fading sun and turn amber as the foothills take on the early fall glow. September at Dynamis is more than the start of harvest. It is the moment when fruit turns to promise, and promise begins its transformation into wine. The season writes itself in light and flavor, and every sip feels like the start of a new chapter.

NOVEL Davidson A THOROUGHLY MODERN EXTENSION TO MAIN STREET
By MARTIE EMORY
There’s nothing more authentic than the charming town of Davidson, NC — making it the perfect landing spot for NOVEL Davidson by Crescent Communities. If you’re dreaming of a rental home that elevates the simple moments of everyday life, you’ve arrived!
A welcoming mix of luxury one-, two-, and three-bedroom rental homes and townhomes, NOVEL Davidson is the perfect match for small-town professionals, long-time Davidson residents looking to downsize, or anyone with family ties to the area in need of a thoughtfully designed home base that exceeds expectations.
Just as Davidson offers timeless appeal, NOVEL Davidson captures the spirit of community with intentional design, curated outdoor spaces, and inviting architecture. These are more than places to live — they are homes meant to inspire connection, with gathering spaces and recreation opportunities that reflect the area’s urban charm and natural beauty. Crescent Communities’ vision is rooted in building neighborhoods where approachable, meaningful living takes center stage — where renters truly become neighbors.
“Crescent Communities is known for developing communities that reflect and enhance the unique character of their surroundings, and our approach to NOVEL Davidson was no different,” explains Katie Maloomian, Sr. Director of Development. “The community’s design, scale, and amenities were thoughtfully crafted to integrate with the fabric of Davidson — from its historic Main Street and close-knit charm to its natural beauty. We’ve created a neighborhood designed to foster lasting connections and enduring value. In many ways, Davidson itself is the greatest amenity we can offer.”
That said, there’s plenty more to love. The community features a Veranda Magazine–inspired pool courtyard framed by lush landscaping, a charming pool house, and an adjacent two-level patio with an outdoor fireplace that feels as warm as it looks. Nearby, you’ll find a certified Monarch (butterfly) garden, a tranquil reminder that nature is always just steps away.
Residents enjoy exclusive access to beautifully designed shared spaces like the Great Room, complete with games, a kitchenette, quiet work-from-home zones, a library, and a billiards room. A state-of-the-art Fitness Studio supports an active lifestyle, while the community’s outdoor areas offer an even deeper connection to the town. Think a park with a pétanque court and seating under a mature oak tree, open to all of Davidson to enjoy.
Additional outdoor amenities further celebrate connection and community: Little Free Libraries, Dog Stick Shares, hammocks, large-scale chess, and a walking trail that links Potts Street directly to the Lake Norman YMCA. Every element has been designed to seamlessly blend with the feel of Main Street while offering added joy to daily life.
Inside each home, modern finishes meet cozy comforts — Shaker-style cabinets, built-in bookshelves, walk-out balconies, and the all-
important keyless entry — giving residents a pristine blank canvas to make their own.
NOVEL Davidson also prioritizes sustainability, including solar panels that supplement power for the amenity building, EV charging stations, and NGBS Silver Certification, ensuring that these luxury homes are built with both the environment and long-term livability in mind.
And the neighborhood itself? A stroll to your favorite coffee shop, a visit to the library for book club, a casual walk with your dog, or a night out with friends — all within the unmatched charm of Davidson. Plus, NOVEL Davidson places you just minutes from downtown Cornelius and the entire Lake Norman area.

RETIREMENT IS ABOUT EXPERIENCES, NOT PURCHASES
By MIKE MCGILVARY, AIF®, FINANCIAL ADVISOR
Retirement gives us something incredibly rare: time. Time to reconnect with what matters, explore new passions, and create moments that stay with us. But when it comes to how we use that time - and money - it’s easy to default to things we can buy.
Here’s another way to think about it: How can you build your retirement “wishlist” around experiences rather than purchases? This can help turn your retirement into a time of becoming more connected, more fulfilled, and more you.
IT’S ABOUT THE FEELING, NOT THE PRICE TAG
The moments that linger in your memory are usually the ones that made you feel something. For example:
• Taking a cooking class with your spouse.
• Hosting a family game night that becomes a tradition.
• Teaching your grandchild how to fish, knit, or bake.
USE MILESTONES TO CREATE MEMORIES
You don’t need a special occasion to create a memory, but tying experiences to milestones can make them even more powerful. Think about:
• Marking your retirement with a road trip to places you’ve always wanted to see.
• Celebrating an anniversary with a surprise weekend getaway.
• Taking a grandchild to a sporting event or concert on a big birthday.
SPEND WITH INTENTION, NOT IMPULSE
Some of the most meaningful experiences come from thoughtful, rather than expensive, choices:
• Upgrade your Saturday mornings - sign up for a class, take up hiking, or learn to paint.
• Gift yourself a weekend retreat or a solo day exploring a nearby town.
• Dedicate yourself to learning a new craft like photography or piano.
MAKE SPACE FOR REFLECTION
Experiences don’t always need to be big or bold. Sometimes, the richest moments happen in stillness. Take the scenic route. Start a journal. Share your stories with someone younger. Or just sit with a good cup of coffee and appreciate the journey so far. Leave room for presence. That’s where the magic often lives.
CREATE TRADITIONS
Experiences can grow. What starts as a one-time idea can turn into a cherished tradition. Maybe it’s a yearly family camping trip. Or a weekly lunch date with old friends. These aren’t just things you do, they’re things that connect you.
Retirement isn’t about what you can buy - it’s about what you can live. This is your time. Time to dream. Time to explore. Time to invest in the moments that matter most. Because the most valuable things you can collect in retirement aren’t things at all - they’re the experiences that make you feel fully alive.
THE TURTLE’S SHELL
THE JOY OF SHOPPING LOCAL
Written By MARTIE EMORY
Photography By PETER COLIN MURRAY
Close to celebrating their exciting first year in business, Mary and Doug Harrington are beyond proud their supremely adorable and fun boutique – The Turtle’s Shell – has brought joy to the Sherrills Ford community they love!
“We’ve spent the first year paying very close attention to what our customers want and need, so we can continually provide new and exciting products,” shares Mary. “It’s hard to believe our first year in business is almost complete – we’ve had such wonderful support from all across the Lake Norman area. We are 100% focused on this community – and hope The Turtle’s Shell provides a feel-good experience for our customers – not just a place to run in and grab something.”
Keeping those customer requests in mind, The Turtle’s Shell will also be expanding their clothing and accessories collections this next season and modifying their “kids’” section to include baby gifts and other essentials for newborns. Mary shares that they also plan to add more women’s boutique lines and leisure wear (yes, that includes pajamas).
It’s easy to define their style – cute but comfortable – and oh-so perfect for lake life!
Mary and Doug are also very excited about their little section of The Village Shoppes, as the complex will soon add a local ice cream shop –The Scoop – and Your Wine Stop, along with their store and Neighbors 828 Restaurant.
“Opening at the beginning of the holiday shopping season last year was a mixed blessing, as we started strong and then encountered the postholiday letdown,” says Mary. “But, it was also a good learning experience in strategic planning.”
She and Doug initially set out for the store to be focused on home décor, art and gifts – but soon saw a niche for women’s clothing, as well. Both are extremely excited about being part of the small business community here.
“Offering options for women of all ages is our goal, from colorful, easy-to-wear dresses, blouses, casual wear and jeans, to beach coverups, accent jewelry, purses, wallets and other cute, irresistible accessories.”

The shop’s lighthearted ambiance and constantly updated inventory has established a base of loyal customers during the past year who also comment on the great price points they find.
“We always want to be an affordable place for everyone to find something they love,” shares Mary. “That means we absolutely focus on quality items, but especially in the current focus on inflation and price increases, we want The Turtle’s Shell to remain a place where anyone can find something wonderful without breaking the bank!”
The ever-creative Mary has always had a flair for finding those “little extras” that bring a room to life – and that has played a huge role in designing the home décor side of the business.
“We love carrying distinctive accessory items that can freshen up the look of your home, even if you’re not a designer. That might be unique wall art, eclectic knick-knacks, stylish lighting, fun kitchenware and definitely some one-of-a-kind products,” adds Mary.
Boasting such a variety of inventory, The Turtle’s Shell also works closely with local creators to showcase their talents and promote unique, locally made products in the store.
Need a gift for birthdays, new homes, weddings and every traditional holiday on the calendar? The Turtle’s Shell has boldly embraced the “Lake Life” we all love so much, as well as showcasing their pride in Sherrills Ford, with unique Lake Norman tees and sweatshirts, towels, glassware and LKN coasters. RENEGOTIATING LIFE IN RETIREMENT
By JEAN MARIE JOHNSON
Idon’t ask, but they tell me - my inner circle of women, my casual friends, and even virtual strangers in pop-up, spontaneous conversations – things CHANGE after retirement!
While we all know this, these uber-aware, proactive women are referring to both practical matters and those that tap into our oftenunspoken hopes, dreams, and even assumptions.
And they don’t hold back:
• “I told him that just because I no longer go to the office, I don’t plan to cook for him three times a day. I’m signing up for dinner, but that’s it.”
• “I never said we’d live together after I retire! I’m perfectly happy staying in my own home and expect that he’ll stay in his. Why change now?”
• “He’s always been a homebody and I’m ready for adventure. So do I try to drag him along, or just get some girlfriends to go with?”
• “I was completely thrown when he told me we should think about relocating across the country to be near the grandkids. I’m happy right here!”
I hear you, girlfriend! And if I were speaking with your man, I’d probably hear similar questions, concerns, and frustrations – because it does go both ways!
You may think that “after so many years,” most couples would just settle in for the rest of the ride together. But that trend has shifted. Perhaps you’ve heard the term “gray divorce”? It refers to couples aged 50 and over, particularly those in long-term marriages who call it quits. In fact, divorce rates:
• among older couples have risen dramatically since 1990
• for those 50 and older has roughly doubled
• for those 65 and older, has tripled.
These are sobering statistics. And because retirement is a new stage in life and a major change for both partners, it makes good sense to get ahead of the questions and challenges that may arise. For this, as with all major life changes, honest talk and respectful, thoughtful negotiation is key.

A GENTLE REMINDER
includes the household budget, of course, but also ongoing financial management. Many couples engage a financial advisor to provide objective, knowledgeable input that can head off potential conflicts. One couple I know well decided that after ten years of coupledom, it was time to put a couple of rings on it. Shortly thereafter, they connected with an advisor to help them sort out their financial picture.
HOUSEHOLD MANAGEMENT AND CHORES
Remember the woman who declared that she would only be responsible for making dinner? Well, they talked, and he understood. The point is that regardless of the arrangements that were in place preretirement, the entire list should be up for review.
TIME TOGETHER, TIME APART
Remember the other woman with wanderlust married to the homebody? She realized that it would be unfair to try to “make him change” so drastically. They compromised by finding things close to home that they could enjoy together, while she also scheduled trips with her girlfriends.
I don’t want to oversimplify. Negotiating changes like these can be prickly and may take some time to work through. That’s why having empathy for where your partner is coming from and being willing to compromise are the keys to retirement success – for both of you.
LIFE IN RETIREMENT
No matter how well you know your partner, remind yourself that each person’s experience of retirement is unique. A long time in the making, it’s filled with a mix of hopes, dreams, expectations and yes, some fears.
LAUNCH ON A POSITIVE NOTE
I hear you, girlfriend! And if I were speaking with your man, I’d probably hear similar questions, concerns, and frustrations – because it does go both ways!
Whether you are just embarking on your individual or mutual retirement journey or already in the midst of it, think in terms of creating something new together. I love how my friend, S, did this:
You may think that “after so many years,” most couples would just settle in for the rest of the ride together. But that trend has shifted.
Perhaps you’ve heard the term “gray divorce”? It refers to couples aged 50 and over, particularly those in long-term marriages who call it quits. In fact, divorce rates:
“I just said to Joe: ‘You know, now that we are finally here with the empty house and our jobs behind us, let’s really think about how we want to live.’”
• among older couples have risen dramatically since 1990
In their case, he had already retired, but now she was leaving the workforce and planning to be at home, with her Joe. She had the wisdom to anticipate that how they each thought that might play out would be quite different. They were able to get ahead of the challenges.
FINANCES
• for those 50 and older has roughly doubled
• for those 65 and older, has tripled.
These are sobering statistics. And because retirement is a new stage in life and a major change for both partners, it makes good sense to get ahead of the questions and challenges that may arise. For this, as with all major life changes, honest talk and respectful, thoughtful negotiation is key.
When that steady paycheck becomes a thing of the past for one or both partners, it’s time to review everything related to finances. This

GROW LIKE A PRO: THE SECRET TO A HEALTHIER, GREENER LAWN
WWhether you’re a homeowner dreaming of the lushest yard on the block, managing an athletic field that sees daily foot traffic, or running a lawn care company ready to elevate your services, the secret to success lies in having the right tools— and knowing when to rent instead of buy.
Investing in commercial-grade lawn equipment can be a big commitment. That’s why renting specialized gear gives you access to the best tools in the business—without the long-term cost or maintenance headaches. From core aerators to hydro seeders, renting gives you flexibility, performance, and results you’ll see fast.
Here’s how you can transform your turf with five powerful pieces of lawn-enhancing equipment:
1. 30” STINGER PLUGGER: BREAK THROUGH COMPACTED SOIL
Healthy grass starts with healthy roots—and healthy roots need room to breathe. The 30” Stinger Plugger is a powerhouse core aerator that pulls deep plugs from the soil, reducing compaction and allowing air, water, and nutrients to reach the root zone. Ideal for large yards, sports fields, and commercial properties, this plugger is the first step to a greener, stronger lawn. Renting this professional-grade tool means you can aerate like a pro without owning equipment that only gets used once or twice a year.
2. OVERSEEDER: PRECISION SEEDING THAT WORKS
Once the soil is aerated, it’s the perfect time to overseed. A quality overseeder cuts slits into the ground, places grass seed directly into those slits, and then covers them— protecting the seed and dramatically improving germination rates. Whether you’re filling in bare spots or introducing a new turf variety, overseeding is essential for a thick, even lawn. Rental overseeders let you take advantage of seasonal seeding windows without the expense of storing and servicing a unit year-round.
3. 410 COMPOST SPREADER / TOP DRESSER: FEED FROM THE GROUND UP
Think of compost as nature’s fertilizer. A 410 Compost Spreader (also known as a top dresser) applies a fine, even layer of organic material over your lawn, enriching the soil
with nutrients and improving water retention. It’s especially useful after aeration and overseeding—helping grass seed establish and thrive. Renting this type of spreader makes it easy to feed your lawn the organic way without hauling bags or spreading by hand.
Need to apply liquid fertilizer, weed control, or soil amendments? The Gateway Applicator delivers even, precise coverage of liquid treatments across your lawn or field. With consistent spray patterns and deep absorption, it’s ideal for boosting growth and tackling problem areas. For lawn care companies, renting an applicator lets you offer professional treatments without investing in multiple pieces of seasonal equipment.
5. HYDRO SEEDER: SPRAY AND GROW
Hydroseeding is a game-changer for new lawns or erosion-prone areas. This all-in-one system mixes seed, fertilizer, mulch, and water into a thick slurry that’s sprayed evenly over the soil. It protects the seed, retains moisture, and encourages fast, uniform germination. Whether you’re a contractor taking on new lawn installs or a homeowner starting from scratch, a rented hydroseeder gets you professional results—fast.
RENT SMARTER. GROW BETTER.
You don’t need to spend thousands on equipment to achieve a golf-coursequality lawn. Renting gives you access to the latest technology and commercialgrade performance—whenever you need it. Whether you’re reviving your yard, maintaining a high-traffic field, or growing your lawn care business, the path to greener, healthier turf starts here.

HOW MUSIC MOVES AND SHAPES US
By ADELE CASANOVA
You may have you heard the famous quote from American author Georgia Cates, “Music is what feelings sound like.” Music does move us emotionally and can shape our mood and outlook on life. Music is a natural, inborn part of human existence and has been a part of all cultures throughout history. The intellectual capacity to recognize and experience music is present in every person from birth and is the first mental capacity to develop in the human brain.
There are significant positive benefits from listening to and performing music. Listening to music is stimulating to the brain, engaging neurons to connect, which creates a state of learning. Music is more stimulating to the brain than any other activity. It brings together the activation of both the right and left sides of the brain. The results are increased creativity, improved memory and positive thinking.
Music stimulates the neurotransmitter dopamine, known as the “feel good” chemical in the brain, related to our sense of reward and happiness. This knowledge has led to music therapy becoming a popular and successful form of therapy, used to increase positive mental and physical states. Research into music therapy has found that listening to music can increase happiness and life satisfaction. At Durham University in Ireland, researcher Tuomas Eerola, PhD, a professor of music cognition, writes, “The results help us to pinpoint the ways people regulate their mood with the help of music, as well as how
music rehabilitation and music therapy might tap into these processes of comfort, relief, and enjoyment.”
Other research has focused on the joy upbeat music can bring. The American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) reports that music therapy programs can be designed to achieve goals such as managing stress, enhancing memory, and alleviating pain. It has been found that music can indeed reduce physical pain. A 2015 review in The Lancet Trusted Source found that people who listened to music before, during, or after surgery experienced less pain and anxiety, compared to patients who did not listen to music. The music listeners didn’t even need as much pain medication.
Music therapy can also improve the outlook and management of mood disorders, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, stroke and multiple sclerosis, according to research by World Journal of Psychiatry.
We all have favorite songs that elicit certain familiar emotions. The more often we hear a piece of music, the more favorable will be our emotional association. Music can stir new emotions in listeners, as well as bring up emotional memories associated with familiar music. Music is a huge part of our social lives, and accompanies life-changing moments, such as weddings, funerals and religious events. Music can also create a sense of empathy in the listener for the emotions experienced by the performers. Likewise, music often stirs listeners to action, such as dancing, marching or singing. Just think of people moving to music at concerts or
children naturally breaking into dance when they hear music.
Knowing that participating in music can lead to positive outcomes for people, many parents are beginning to introduce playing a musical instrument as an additional activity for children ages seven to seventeen. In 2019, Guitar Center commissioned an independent study to explore the effects of supplemental music lessons on the development of children. Results were as follows:
• Patience in Problem-Solving – 85% of parents found that their children were more able to complete tasks.
• Prioritization Skills – 71% of parents found that children were able to voluntarily reduce screen time.
• Increased Self-Awareness – 83% of parents found their children were more receptive to feedback.
• Time Management – 68% of parents found their children were more able to finish tasks on time.
• Self-Motivation – 60% of parents found that children developed a greater ability to self-monitor screen time.
Music is indeed an integral part of our lives. It keeps our brains active, alert and healthy, while helping us to fight depression, lift our mood and stay connected through empathy and shared emotional experiences. It helps our children develop critical life skills and brings us together as a society to enjoy a shared creativity.

MAKE AN IMPACT KIDS WORK INTERNSHIP
OPENING DOORS FOR LAKE NORMAN’S NEXT GENERATION
By JAIME LANE, MAKE AN IMPACT FOUNDATION
Lake Norman’s Growth Demands Innovation—And the Community Is Rising to the Challenge
As the Lake Norman region experiences record growth—a staggering 53% population increase in just the past decade—local leaders are stepping up with bold solutions to secure the region’s economic future. At the heart of this effort is the Kids Work Internship Program, powered by the Make an Impact Foundation (MAIF). What began as the PIVOT Internship under Lake Norman Economic Development has evolved into a transformative experience for students— and a powerful tool for strengthening local businesses.
Recognizing the tremendous impact of the program and the passion behind it, Dale Gilmore, founder of MAIF, made a long-term commitment to keep it alive and thriving. To do so, Dale partnered with Jaime Lane, the original leader of the PIVOT Internship with LNED, whose vision and leadership helped shape the program from the beginning. Together, Dale and Jaime reimagined and relaunched the initiative as Kids Work, expanding its scope and deepening its community impact across the Lake Norman region.
Now backed by the dedicated MAIF team— including Deborah McKee and Clarissa Young—Kids Work continues to open doors for young people while addressing workforce needs across the region.
A SUMMER THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING
The Kids Work Internship Program offers a 160-hour paid summer internship for students ages 16–18 in Mecklenburg and Iredell counties. This isn’t just a summer job—it’s a life-changing experience.
Interns are matched with local businesses in industries ranging from advanced manufacturing and skilled trades (like HVAC, plumbing, and electrical) to human resources, marketing, logistics, IT, and engineering. Students gain hands-on experience while building valuable career connections.
But that’s only part of the story. The program also includes professional and personal development workshops, covering soft skills like:
• Communication
• Teamwork
• Professional etiquette
• Financial literacy
To eliminate barriers, the program provides transportation, lunch, and uniform allowances, making participation accessible to all— regardless of background or income.

WHY LOCAL BUSINESSES ARE KEY TO SUCCESS
Community businesses are the backbone of the Kids Work program. By hosting interns, companies:
• Build a pipeline of future talent
• Create leadership opportunities for current employees
• Give back to the local community
And MAIF makes it easy. They handle onboarding, payroll, and logistics, so businesses can focus on mentoring without administrative hassle. Sponsorships are also available for those wanting to make an even greater impact.
“If you have a great pipeline, then you have a great platform for business.” — Jaime Lane, Manager, Kids Work & MY Corporate Impact
BROADENING HORIZONS FOR STUDENTS
As Jaime Lane often tells interns:
“Even if you’re placed with a company that doesn’t seem to fit your career goals, take a deeper look. Businesses need more than just technicians—they need professionals in marketing, scheduling, HR, social media,
finance, and more. Every company is a network of opportunities waiting to be discovered.”
Many of the roles’ interns explore require only a two-year degree, certification, or specialized training—or can even be accessed straight out of high school. The program is helping students reimagine what’s possible for their futures.
LOOKING BEYOND SUMMER: A VISION FOR YEAR-ROUND IMPACT
While the summer internship is the cornerstone, MAIF is working to expand Kids Work into a year-round initiative, offering students consistent access to career exploration and skill-building across fall, spring, and summer.
And the demand is real:
• 160+ students applied for the 2025 summer session—far exceeding available placements.
• Across North Carolina, internship and apprenticeship participants report the highest wage growth among all workforce training initiatives.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Applications for the 2025 summer program are now closed, but the mission continues. MAIF is seeking businesses, mentors, and sponsors to help expand the program into every season.
If you’re a business leader, educator, or community advocate, now is the time to get involved. Together, we can build a stronger, more inclusive economy—one student, one internship, and one opportunity at a time.
JOIN US IN SHAPING THE FUTURE OF LAKE NORMAN.
Because when we invest in our youth, we invest in our entire community.
Details Matter
BRINGING NEW LIFE TO YOUR BOAT, CAR OR RV
Written By MARTIE EMORY
Photography By STEPHANIE WISEMAN PHOTOGRAPHY
Sometimes the road to happiness weaves its own winding path – through years of corporate travel and meetings that steal precious time. That’s something lake dweller and, now, small business owner Kenyon Stanley knows for sure; but he also knows there’s no shortage of good days if you’re living lakeside and focusing on tasks close to your heart!
In April of this year, Kenyon launched Details Matter, LLC, a full service mobile car, boat, RV and aircraft detailer, known for providing the fastest quotes and even more efficient expertise. He and his family have called the Lake Norman area home for nearly 20 years, following a cross-country move from Washington State in 2006. He’ll tell you, with no hesitation, his life has never felt more on course!
“We have lived the ‘lake life’ our entire lives, so that’s why we chose this area when we relocated,” he shares. “For our family – that’s my wife, Jessica, and sons, KJ and Matthew – it’s the lake vibes, the people and the community that exists so easily between lake lovers, whether they sail, jet ski, power boat, wake surf or simply putter around on a toon.”
A self-proclaimed “recovering marketing executive,” Kenyon felt a lifestyle change on the horizon around 2023 when many companies were once again shifting priorities.
“Because I was in leadership, I had always found my passion in leading teams and empowering others, as I find more joy in the success of others than I do with my own successes. I saw these shifts before in the 1990s and, in 2008, since I was also at the beginning of my health transformation, my radar was up for new beginnings,” he explains.
During high school and college, detailing boats, cars, RVs and planes was Kenyon’s typical summer job – a passion that continued to grow.
“Because I have owned boats my whole life, I’ve always kept my vessels and cars spotless. So, exceeding my clients’ expectations scratches the same itch of using my detail-oriented nature to complete the project, using a proven process,” he adds.
The business is definitely seasonal – with boats taking up about 75% of his time during the
Christmas of 2023, and even at 70 pounds, wholeheartedly believes he’s a lapdog. Jo-Jo, a mini goldendoodle, arrived during Covid, and loves joining Teddy Bear on the boat, by the pool and for any lakefront frolic.
While embracing a new professional path, Kenyon’s own health renewal also prompted wisdom worth sharing, and he found the perfect outlet to document his weightloss journey in a heartfelt medium to guide others. Grab a copy of his book “Wake up, Fatty” on
prime boating months, followed by cars and RVs at about 20% and planes at five percent.
Kenyon won’t hesitate to share that seeing a project through to completion is simply in his genes, and he’s always game to unravel every challenge that comes his way. It’s a level of micro-focus that also transcends into Details Matter – evident with every gleaming car, boat or RV that’s returned to its grateful owner.
“I’m inspired by the people I meet, and the task to delve into any scenario they bring me. When customers think their boat is too far gone – we come in and restore it – and that look on their face is rewarding beyond measure. I can’t quantify that on a spreadsheet, nor can I duplicate that in a corporate environment. Details Matter is where I belong, and the fact that I can also write a helpful (and typically humorous) blog – in my own voice – is a bonus!”
Besides that meticulous work ethic, Kenyon is known around the lake for sharing plenty of quality time with his two pups, who love the water as much as he does. Teddy Bear, his larger goldendoodle, joined the family during
Goodreads.com for insight and encouragement along your own travels. And, if you’re local, watch for the inspirational Kenyon running (a lot), volunteering around the community and, as always, getting to know even more of his fellow lake enthusiasts!
When your boat, car, RV or aircraft needs a refresh, call, text or email Kenyon for an immediate quote on full interior or full exterior services. Reach him at kenyon@ detailsmatternc.com, 704.302.5873 or request a quote and consultation online at detailsmatternc.com.

The season kicks off August 29 with a performance from Shovels & Rope, the Charleston-based folk duo whose gritty harmonies and genre-bending songwriting have earned them fans around the world. Just one night later, Saturday Night Live veteran Tim Meadows takes the stage, followed later in the season by stand-up comedy favorite Jim Florentine -- two names guaranteed to keep audiences laughing.
Cain Center is also giving magic lovers plenty to get excited about. In September, internationally acclaimed illusionist Mark Clearview will bring his blend of sleightof-hand and comedy to the stage, while November sees the return of Mike Super, a crowd favorite known for mind-bending tricks and family-friendly charm.
Musically, the range is impressive. The Dirty Dozen Brass Band will bring their unmistakable New Orleans swagger, blues guitarist Philip Sayce will light up the stage with his fiery solos, and the Charlotte
Symphony Orchestra will offer a taste of classical grandeur. Jazz fans will be drawn to John Coltrane: The Beauty of Struggle, a performance by the Jazz Legacy Project exploring the influence and resilience of one of America’s most important musical figures.
And then there are the tribute acts -- a full slate that reads like a playlist of music history’s greatest hits. Expect note-perfect recreations from Ramble Tamble (Creedence Clearwater Revival), One Irish Rover (Van
Morrison), How Sweet It Is (James Taylor), Tell Me Lies (Fleetwood Mac), Heart of Rock & Roll (Huey Lewis & The News), Mamma Mania (ABBA), and Are You Ready For It? (Taylor Swift).
One of this fall’s most unique offerings arrives November 20 with The Pirates of Penzance in One Act + An Evening of Gilbert & Sullivan Favorites, performed by stars of the New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players. First, audiences get a fully staged comedic romp -- complete with period costumes, patter songs, and piratical flair -- before the cast returns after intermission for an elegant concert of highlights from across the Gilbert & Sullivan repertoire, including audiencerequested numbers.
The holiday season at Cain Center is no less festive. Sons of Serendip will once again blend classical crossover with holiday warmth, Joe Gransden’s Little Big Band Holiday Show promises swing-style seasonal cheer, and Christmas with The Drifters will deliver timeless doo-wop harmonies. Rounding things out is Carolina Holidays from NC native Charly Lowry, mixing Americana, soul, and folk with holiday storytelling.
What makes Cain Center’s programming especially exciting is the variety—there’s something here for the lifelong theatergoer, the casual concert fan, and the family looking for a fun night out. And with its new multi-show ticket packages offering up to 20% off, it’s easier than ever to build your own custom season.
Tickets are on sale now, and the hottest shows are already selling quickly. If you haven’t yet experienced a night at Cain Center for the Arts, this fall might be the perfect time to see what all the buzz is about.
Our mission at Cain Center for the Arts is to present exceptional visual arts, performing arts and social experiences to the Lake Norman Region.

Kate’s Grace: FINDING LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS FOR FAMILIES IMPACTED BY MENTAL ILLNESS
By KATHLEEN CLARK
Tom Brydon smiles fondly as he recalls the time his daughter Kate phoned to say she was going to be late getting home for Thanksgiving dinner. Kate was a junior at James Madison University, set to fly back for the holiday, when she noticed a young woman sitting alone and crying in the terminal. When Kate approached, the young woman explained that she was on stand-by and needed to be on the flight to make her connection to London, where her family was waiting for her. “Kate gave up her seat so the young woman could make her flight to England,” Tom recalls. “That’s just who Kate was—totally kind and empathetic.”
Sadly, Kate also lived with severe mental illness, having received a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia when she was 19 years old. Tom looks back at the period when he and his wife Sylvia struggled to comprehend the news. “Having teenagers, there’s so much to worry about. You worry about alcohol, driving, pregnancy. We thought we were through the hard stuff. Then, wham, it’s like getting hit with a baseball bat in the back of the head.”
Following the diagnosis, Kate and her parents began searching for treatment, working with doctors to identify medication, therapy, and a self-care routine to enable Kate to move forward with her life. Eventually, she was able to return to school, becoming a certified medical assistant and pursuing a career helping individuals living with clinical depression. She
made her home in Florida, where she loved the beaches and sunny weather, and in 2023, she took a celebratory trip to Israel with her parents, where Kate surprised the local guides with her extensive knowledge of history and the Bible.
It was on the way home from Israel that Kate confided in her parents about the difficult sideeffects she was experiencing. She felt her medicines made her foggy and that it was difficult for her to keep up at work the way she wanted to. Once back in Florida, Kate made the decision to stop taking her medication. Unfortunately, the most challenging symptoms of her disease came roaring back, and Kate died by suicide in February of 2024. She was 31 years old.
TURNING GRIEF INTO HOPE
Amid profound grief, Tom and Sylvia contemplated how they might turn their family’s pain into a positive legacy for Kate’s life--something that would help individuals and families impacted by mental illness. “We knew that was what Kate would have wanted,” says Tom. “She had so much compassion for people who were sad or struggling.”
Along with their son Drew and daughterin-law Maggie, Tom and Sylvia decided to address the need for better access to mental healthcare, something they understood all too well due to the challenges they experienced when first seeking a diagnosis and treatment for Kate. Desperate to get answers for the changes they were seeing in their once-healthy daughter, the Brydons sought help from 3 different psychiatrists and received multiple misdiagnoses before Kate’s illness was finally identified by doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Only then could they begin exploring treatment options for Kate, which took several more years with numerous twists and turns along the way.

The Brydon family has partnered with NAMI Charlotte to establish the NAMI Navigator in memory of Kate and her legacy of helping others in need
Sadly, the Brydons’ experience is like that of other families. Due to a variety of challenges, including stigma, finances, and inadequate numbers of providers, over half of all individuals with a mental health condition in the U.S. never receive treatment. Those who do seek treatment face a fragmented and confusing system that is notoriously difficult to navigate. As a result, the average time between the first symptoms and acquiring treatment for a mental health condition in the U.S. is an astonishing 11 years.
FINDING A PROVEN MODEL
Believing there had to be a better way, Tom connected with his good friends Rob Berton and Mike Caine. Together, they scoured the country for a navigator system with a proven record of connecting individuals and families with mental health services. Eventually, they discovered Here For Texas, a mental health navigation model developed by the Grant Haliburton Foundation with a proven track record of improving access to mental health care in Dallas.
Intrigued by their success, Tom reached out to the Grant Haliburton Foundation. As luck would have it, they were looking for a city to replicate their model. The stars continued to align when Tom and his friends met Kate Weaver, Executive Director of NAMI Charlotte. Quickly grasping the potential, NAMI Charlotte’s leadership agreed to partner
with the Brydons to bring a proven model of mental health navigation to the CharlotteMecklenburg region.
LAUNCHING THE NAMI NAVIGATOR
On June 2, the NAMI Navigator Charlotte officially launched with the tagline Kate’s Grace: Finding Light in the Darkness. In yet another sign that the Brydon family had made the right choice for how to honor Kate’s memory, the date of the launch—chosen separately by NAMI Charlotte—just happened to be Kate’s birthday.
Indeed, the NAMI Navigator is a worthy legacy for a young woman whose first instinct was to help others in need. “It truly is a game changer,” notes Tom. Area residents now have a tool to help them navigate the complexities of mental health care. By providing trustworthy and confidential guidance, the NAMI Navigator connects individuals to the resources and support systems they need to thrive, offering comprehensive referrals, educational materials, and self-help strategies. Individuals and families can utilize the NAMI Navigator website, gain one-to-one guidance from trained NAMI volunteers, and even seek navigation support in person at the NAMI Charlotte Resource Center. In partnering with NAMI Charlotte to establish the NAMI Navigator, the Brydons have delivered a fitting tribute to Kate, and an invaluable gift to individuals and families seeking light in the darkness.

THREADED MEMORIES: ANDREA BRINKLEY’S ART IS DEFINING FIBER ON HER OWN TERMS
By AUTUMN PAYNE
Amid fast trends and factory-made sameness, Andrea Brinkley is quietly and powerfully doing something different. Her fiber art doesn’t shout. It draws you in with a whisper. Time softens. You’re invited to pause, to notice the quiet magic in a bloom stitched by hand, the echo of memory held in a piece of worn fabric, the gentle strength in every thread.
Andrea never meant to become an artist. She simply wanted to make things that felt true. Her story began in childhood, quietly stitching clothes for her Barbies by hand, then dreaming up her own wardrobe on a well-loved Singer machine. Growing up on a South African sheep farm, surrounded by soft wool and mohair, she discovered early on that every material holds a story—that tradition and new ideas can gently weave together.
It wasn’t until 2016, after years of sewing, selling, and teaching, that she finally claimed the word artist. “I wanted to make something that was fully mine,” she says.

Chris Henry Photography
That “something” became embroidered floral landscapes stitched onto crochet and mounted in old wooden hoops. Unscripted. Textured. Botanical. Her signature emerged not from a formal art school education, but from lived experience and a fearless willingness to experiment.
Today, Andrea splits her time between a dreamy, light-filled home studio and her shared workspace at the Nine Eighteen Nine Studio Gallery inside Charlotte’s VAPA Center. Whether she’s stitching in silence or listening to a podcast with fresh-cut garden flowers on her desk, her process is deeply intuitive. “I rarely start with a rigid plan,” she says. “A new fiber or texture often leads the way.”
That freedom to explore has led her to stitch on more than fabric. Woven chairs, chicken wire, snowshoes—nothing is off limits. Her materials range from thick wools and shimmering metallic threads to unexpected substrates that challenge what embroidery can be. Every piece holds a story, even if it’s one still being discovered.
Botanicals weave through almost all her creations—flowers, vines, berries, and leaves that
carry the gentle echoes of her childhood. “I used to imagine hibiscus flowers as ladies in flowing ballgowns,” she smiles softly. “Those early dreams live within me, blossoming in my work even today.” It’s not just nostalgia— it’s roots. A quiet, tender language of place, care, and playful wonder.
Andrea’s current project, a woven chair now blooming with oversized, freehand-stitched blossoms, is a perfect example of how she lets the art lead. What began as a plan for monstera leaves pivoted completely when her thread stash and her inspiration photos collided. “I didn’t have the right greens,” she says. “But I had the most beautiful pinks and corals. So I pivoted. And it’s becoming something entirely different and, honestly, more exciting.”
That kind of creative agility defines her practice. Her work feels alive because it is alive, emerging slowly through intuition, material response, and time. There’s no rush to finish. In fact, Andrea often steps away from a piece for days before deciding what it truly needs. “Sometimes it’s more texture,
sometimes it’s the smallest bead,” she says. “I’ve learned to trust that moment when it feels whole.”
Now, she’s channeling that same energy into curation. Alongside fellow artist Pam Imhof, Andrea is co-curating Innovations in Fibers: Pushing Boundaries and Sparking Conversations, a new exhibition opening August 9 at Nine Eighteen Nine. With 20 artists contributing, it’s a celebration of the many directions fiber art can take and a sign that this medium is far from static.
To artists just beginning their journey, Andrea offers this: “You don’t need to have it all figured out. Let your materials guide you. Let your voice grow.” Her advice to her younger self? “You are enough. Ditch perfection.”
Andrea Brinkley isn’t chasing trends or gallery fame. Her success is found in the quiet joy of creating something real, something born of memory, fiber, and instinct. Her work doesn’t beg for attention. It enchants it, one stitch at a time.

HEALING THROUGH NATURE
GLAMPING WILD INTRODUCES THE NORTH CAROLINA HIGH COUNTRY’S FIRST CERTIFIED FOREST BATHING TRAIL
In the rolling hills of North Carolina’s High Country, a quiet invitation has been extended — not to hike, camp, or conquer the outdoors, but to slow down, breathe deeply, and simply be in nature.
At Glamping Wild, a luxury nature glamping retreat nestled in the untouched beauty of Ashe County, that invitation is now officially a certified experience. This summer, Glamping Wild launched the region’s first certified forest bathing trail. To the uninitiated, nature and forest therapy is inspired by Shinrin-Yoku, the Japanese practice of “forest bathing” or immersing oneself in the healing qualities of nature. Glamping Wild’s Forest bathing trail meanders through tranquil wetlands preserve, inviting guests to slow down, notice deeply, and engage all their senses in the healing rhythm of the natural world.
This unique trail was certified by the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT) under the expert guidance of Kelly Bruce, a nationally recognized forest therapy guide, trail consultant, and founder of Natural Wanders, based in Western North Carolina. Bruce worked closely with the Glamping Wild team to design and certify a route that honors the land’s natural rhythms while creating a deeply restorative experience for guests.
“So many people are burned out, disconnected from their own bodies and from the land beneath their feet,” says Glamping Wild founder Debby Hanley. “This trail offers a different way to be outside in nature — not as a hiker or a tourist, but as a human being remembering what it feels like to belong to the Earth.”
Continued on page 58.
Continued from page 56.
The trail unofficially begins on a guest’s private geodome deck, then weaves gently down through the wetlands, into a meditative walking labyrinth, and beside a quiet stream. Along the way, guests are gently “invited” to pause, listen and reconnect. Streamside sit spots are provided for comfortable reflection and a concluding tea ceremony. It’s less a path to be followed and more a journey inward, facilitated by the natural world.
Unlike traditional hiking trails, a forest bathing trail is designed for slowness and stillness, with no destination or endpoint in mind. And while many certified trails are set in wooded environments, Glamping Wild’s trail expands the concept into a nature-based experience, highlighting the serenity of open sky, water, grasses, and seasonal changes in a dynamic wetland ecosystem.
“We wanted to reflect the true nature of our land,” Hanley says. “The wetlands here are alive with birdsong and movement. There’s something incredibly calming and honest about this landscape, and we felt it too deserved to be part of the forest bathing experience.”
Access to the trail is currently limited to overnight guests and those booking guided forest therapy walks with ANFT-certified guides. Guided sessions offer a deeper layer of engagement, often incorporating gentle movement, sensory invitations, and relational practices to enhance connection with the land and each other.
But the trail through the wetlands is just the beginning.
Glamping Wild is already working on its second certified trail, which will wind through the forested upper ridge of the 40-acre property. Slated to open later this year, the upper forest bathing trail will bring guests under a shaded canopy and offer an elevated, yet grounding, journey — a companion experience to the more open and flowing nature of the wetlands path below.
As Hanley explains it, the new forest bathing offerings are part of Glamping Wild’s larger mission: to create a retreat space where luxury and wildness exist in harmony, and where guests can find both adventure and deep rest.
Alongside the forest bathing trails, Glamping Wild offers luxuriously appointed geodesic domes, each designed for privacy, comfort, and connection to the natural world.
“People don’t just want a vacation anymore,” Hanley says. “They want transformation — or at the very least, to feel something real again through wellness and self-care. That’s what this land offers, and our job is simply to get out of the way and let the experience unfold.”

Trackside Talks DRIVEN BY LOVE: THE PETTY FAMILY & VICTORY JUNCTION
By CLAIR CROW
If you caught last month’s Trackside Talks, you learned about Adam Petty and his dream of someday creating a camp for kids with serious medical conditions. After he lost his life in a racing accident, his family turned their grief into purpose by forming Victory Junction. Let’s take a closer look.
VJ hosts weekly summer camps, weekend family camps, day programs and specialized camp-style programming year-round through their outREACH program in NC, SC and VA. They have had campers come from all 50 states, as well as four different countries. More than 136,000 experiences for campers and their families have taken place thus far — and at zero cost to them thanks to charitable contributions from VJ supporters. Fostering Victory Junction has been a special way for the Petty family to manage their grief over
the years of missing Adam. Richard Petty shared, “Every time we go there and see a kid, we see Adam. Every time you see one of those kids smile, it’s Adam smiling. We stay with Adam through other kids.” He went on to say, “Adam’s not here. God put him on earth to do one thing and we’re now doing what we think is right and what the good Lord has lined up.” The kids at Victory Junction have a way of stealing your heart. Petty stated, “Everything you read, everything you hear, everything I say comes alive when you walk in and see those kids”. Petty reflected on his four kids, fifteen grandkids and 17 great grandkids noting how they’re all without affliction, thanking God he’s allowed it to be that way. With that in mind he thought, “Okay God, you took care of me, how can I help other people?”.
As you may have read in last month’s column, legacy is something Petty is humble about, but there is no doubt his family has left a lasting one not just in NASCAR, but through Victory Junction. When digging more into legacy and what he hopes folks will remember his family for he shared, “I’m looking at VJ as being here forever. You’ll always have kids who are afflicted and this is something we can look back on and say the Petty’s done pretty good in racing but look at all the people their family has helped, even for just a little time.” He’s hopeful people will recognize their racing success but more than that, that they’ll remember the Petty family “as being able to leave some good back in the world”.
The Petty family turned hardship into a blessing for others and beyond that, started a movement for their peers in NASCAR to create their own foundations. When VJ first started, there wasn’t anyone else in NASCAR who had a foundation, besides the Petty Foundation. Petty said, “VJ opened up people’s eyes and made them think how they’re lucky to be racing” adding, “Foundations is a way for the drivers, owners and NASCAR to give back.” There are several in the sport now who give back in many different ways, which continue to bless many people. Specifically, The Petty Foundation works with paralyzed veterans in America, while also helping to support ball clubs and fields in their local community.
After our interview about Victory Junction concluded, I had just a couple more questions for Petty. The Petty Museum focuses partly on racing and partly on the family. Aside from race cars, fire suits, and other racing memorabilia, there are also items on display that his family has
accumulated over the years. I wondered if there was something in the treasure trove that he was most fond of to which he quickly started walking me to where his Presidential Medal of Freedom was displayed. He was awarded it by President George H.W. Bush in 1992 for his contribution to racing and American culture. He is one of only 670 people to have ever received that award and the only person within NASCAR. I couldn’t leave without asking Petty if he had a favorite car that has come out of the Petty garage. He quickly quipped, “Any of ‘em I could win in… whichever one I was in that day was my favorite”.
Stay tuned for next month as the series finishes with a look into NASCARnival night at Victory Junction and an interview with Kyle Petty, father of Adam Petty.

SPEAK SO THAT OTHERS WILL LISTEN
By LESLIE SPEAS
Do you feel like others are often not really listening to what you have to say? What we say and how we say it is extremely important in communicating effectively with others. There are essentially seven deadly sins that you should avoid in interacting with others. If you do these things, they are not likely to trust you or listen to what you say.
1. GOSSIP
Gossip is habitually revealing personal or sensational information about others. Gossip is bad because it seeks to defame or discredit others. It also destroys your trustworthiness and makes you look bad. According to Eleanor Roosevelt, “Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.”
2. JUDGING
Studies suggest it can take the average person as little as seven seconds to judge a person’s character – and this impacts your communication with them. To avoid this, increase awareness of any unconscious biases you may have internalized that may be causing you to make faulty judgments. If you feel yourself judging someone you are interacting with, practice the pause and get back on track.
3. NEGATIVITY
Negativity is toxic and it impacts others’ attitudes about you. To overcome it, try to recognize when you are becoming negative and flip your thoughts to something you like or look forward to. It also helps to recognize the situations that cause you to be more negative as this will assist in managing your communication.
4. COMPLAINING
Complaining is toxic and it corrupts relationships.
5. MAKING EXCUSES
Excuses are not helpful, and people don’t want to hear them. When you become unwilling to take responsibility for your actions, people will lose respect for you. And when they lose respect for you, they won’t listen to you.
6. EXAGGERATION
Exaggeration is really dishonesty, and it erodes trust.
7. DOGMATISM
Dogmatism involves representing opinions as facts in an arrogant manner and not considering others’ points of view. It builds barriers instead of building bridges in relationships.
Now that you have the basics of the behaviors that should be avoided in interacting with others, let’s look at some pillars of effective speaking. If you demonstrate these pillars, others are much more likely to trust and respect you – and listen to what you have to say.
PILLAR 1 – BE CLEAR
AND CONCISE
When you initiate communication, think about what you are trying to accomplish (the why) and your audience. Depending on the situation, sometimes it’s even helpful to practice in advance.
PILLAR 2 – BE HONEST
Tell the truth. If you are dishonest, others won’t trust you and consequently they won’t really listen.
PILLAR 3 – SHOW RESPECT
If you show respect to others, they are much more likely to reciprocate. Be open-minded and listen to the other person’s point of view
PILLAR 4 – SHOW CARE AND CONCERN
When you speak to others or give them feedback, make sure it comes from a place of caring and demonstrate empathy. When it doesn’t, others can tell!
PILLAR 5 – LISTEN MORE THAN YOU SPEAK
Use the 80/20 rule – listen 80% and speak 20%.
In conclusion, avoid the seven deadly sins and implement the five pillars to speak so that others will listen attentively!

Dear Dr. Keith,
I’m a 37-year-old woman married to a wonderful man and the mother of a precocious three-year-old daughter. I am grateful to be able to stay at home and raise my child. Fortunately, my husband has a career that allows me to do so, and we can afford it. We’re not wealthy, but we’re comfortable. I have a couple of issues I’m struggling with and need some guidance. I’m kind of torn. I feel guilty for not contributing financially to our family. I’m college-educated and had a great job before we decided to have a baby. I was paid well and loved what I did. My father preached the importance of getting my degree and being independent and never becoming dependent on a man. That’s part of my struggle. I feel I’ve disappointed my dad. He tells me he’s proud of me and shows me he is; however, I’m having a hard time believing him. The bigger issue is that my husband wants to have another child and keeps pressuring me to go off birth control. I haven’t as of yet. I’m not sure I want to be pregnant again, let alone have another child. Don’t get me wrong, I love being a mom, and our daughter has overall been a good baby/toddler compared to most. I’m not sure I want to be pregnant and raise another child. Now that she’s older, my husband and I are reconnecting physically and emotionally. We’re going on dates, family outings and trips. It’s much easier now than when she was an infant. I’m enjoying our family time together, and I’m not sure I want to give that up.
My husband seems to forget I suffered through horrible postpartum depression. I remember how awful it was, and as much as my husband tried to understand, he couldn’t. How could he? He was supportive and loving but seems to forget how awful it was for both of us. It almost led to us splitting up. I’m fearful of damaging the relationship with my husband if I say no to having another child and disappointing him. Also, I’m terrified of saying yes and going through the trauma of postpartum depression again. I’m scared of moving backward instead of forward. I’m planning on working again once our daughter starts going to school. As much as I enjoy being a full-time mom, I miss working. I enjoy the challenge and having adult time, which is limited when you’ve made the decision to be a stay-at-home parent. I hate this feeling: damned if I do, damned if I don’t. I feel like I’m caught between a rock and a hard place. Am I being selfish if I say no to having another child? Will my husband lose respect for me? Is it wrong to raise an only child and deprive her of having a brother or sister? I’m struggling, please help…
ASK DR. KEITH
By KEITH O’NEILL, PH.D.,C.HT.
Hey Elizabeth,
It’s great that you’ve been able to stay home and raise your daughter. The first few years of a child’s life are key to success in their adulthood. Parenthood is one of the most challenging, rewarding and important jobs in life, though not easy. The confusion you’re feeling is understandable, and you’re right, your husband will not be able to understand what you went through after your daughter was born. Of course, he’s not going to be able to truly understand the postpartum depression you experienced. He hasn’t and won’t ever experience the emotional roller coaster that is pregnancy. Feelings are never wrong. You feel what you feel, and there’s no reason to apologize for that. More importantly, look at what makes you feel the way you do, and be honest with yourself and your husband. That will lead to longterm success in your relationship. I’m the father of a wonderful young woman who is always trying to do the right thing no matter what she does in life. I’ll give you the same advice I gave her. Be true to yourself and avoid compromising or sacrificing who you are to fit in or please others. That will enable you to set healthy boundaries and make good choices. That
alone will improve the quality of your life. Know that you were not put in this world to meet the expectations of others, and the healthy choice would be to stop trying to. That includes your husband and father. If they’re good men, and it sounds like they are, they’ll learn to accept your choices and ultimately respect your decision.
I firmly believe that if you live your life fear-based, you’ll lose in every aspect of your life. Whether it’s running a business, raising children or just doing life, fear will diminish its quality. More importantly, you’ve got to be honest with yourself. Do you really want another child, or would you be having one just to please your husband? If it’s the latter, it’s not a good reason to get pregnant again. When your desire to start working again gets delayed a few years to raise another child, will you start to resent him and ultimately grow apart? Just a couple of things to consider. My advice is to make a list of the pros and cons of having another child and negotiate a solution that works for you both. Honesty is the best policy and starts with being honest with yourself; the yellow brick road to finding clarity and peace within you and your relationship.

Fire in the Hole: NC HOT SAUCE CONTEST AND FESTIVAL BRINGS THE HEAT TO OXFORD
By ROBIN SHUPE KELLER
Every September, the quiet streets of Oxford, North Carolina transform into a blazing battlefield of culinary courage, where brave souls gather to mull over capsaicin and questionable life choices. The 19th Annual NC Hot Sauce Festival & Contest on September 12th and 13th promises an unforgettable experience for thousands of attendees, which roughly translates to thousands of people willingly subjecting themselves to culinary artistry with a side of self-inflicted pain.
What started as a modest celebration of North Carolina’s spicy heritage has evolved into one of the state’s most popular festivals, attracting huge crowds annually to downtown Oxford. The event has grown from a single-day fiery marathon to a two-day extravaganza, because apparently one day of voluntary mouth torture wasn’t quite enough.
Each September, folks from across the region gather in the picturesque town of Oxford to celebrate all styles, flavors, and temperatures of the Tar Heel state’s finest hot sauces. It’s like a family reunion, except everyone leaves crying and demanding milk.
The festival offers something for everyone, assuming “everyone” includes people who consider pain a seasoning. The annual event features a sauce contest, pepper eating contest, live music & entertainment, and so much more—though the “so much more” often involves paramedics on standby.
The festival offers live entertainment, local spotlight bands, food truck vendors, sauce vendors, local & NC craft beer, and retail & craft vendors. The craft beer serves a dual purpose: flavor enhancement and emergency fire suppression.
The Bailey Farms Pepper Eating Contest stands as the festival’s crown jewel of questionable decision-making. This is where ordinary humans transform into fire-breathing legends or cautionary tales, depending on their tolerance for capsaicininduced enlightenment.
Contestants line up with the confidence of gladiators and the survival instincts of lemmings, ready to discover whether their pain threshold is higher than their IQ. Spectators gather with the morbid fascination typically reserved for reality TV
shows, phones ready to capture viral-worthy moments of human suffering.
What makes this festival truly unique isn’t just the variety of sauces—it’s the community spirit that emerges when thousands of people collectively decide that eating liquid fire sounds like a good idea. With 41% firsttime NC Hot Sauce enthusiasts attending, the festival serves as an initiation rite into North Carolina’s spicy subculture.
The hot sauce, bbq sauce, and powder/rub contest showcases the state’s finest culinary pyrotechnics. Local artisans compete to create the perfect balance of flavor and face-melting intensity, often achieving results that would make NASA’s rocket fuel seem mild by comparison.
The NC Hot Sauce Contest and Festival proves that North Carolinians will gather for any reason to celebrate community, cuisine, and collective suffering. It’s a testament to the human spirit’s remarkable ability to find joy in pain and camaraderie in capsaicin.
Whether you’re a seasoned Chile head or a curious newcomer, September 12th and 13th in Oxford promise an unforgettable weekend. Just remember to bring milk money, comfortable shoes for the inevitable victory dance (or defeat shuffle), and perhaps a designated driver who understands that “I can handle it” are often famous last words at hot sauce contests.

Rose Power Washing BRINGING LAKE NORMAN HOMES BACK TO LIFE
When you live in the Lake Norman area, you know the beauty of the water, the pride in your property, and the value of keeping your home or business looking its best. Rose Power Washing, a locally owned and operated business, has been helping residents and business owners do just that — with attention to detail that’s as precise as it is passionate.
LOCAL KNOWLEDGE. PERSONAL SERVICE.
Rose Power Washing isn’t a big-name franchise sending crews from who-knowswhere. Owner and operator Tj Rose works and serves right here in the greater Lake Norman region, with years of experience caring for the unique surfaces and seasonal challenges of the area.
Being familiar with the neighborhoods, weather patterns, and lakefront environments means Tj can tailor services to fit each property perfectly. “We don’t just clean surfaces — we protect investments,” he says. “When you love where you live, you take care of it.”
TRANSFORMATIONS YOU CAN SEE — AND FEEL
By JENNA MAAT
Rose Power Washing is known for its transformative results. Before-and-after photos reveal the dramatic difference, but the real satisfaction comes from seeing clients’ reactions when dirt, mildew, and years of wear disappear in a single visit.
From pressure washing boat docks to soft washing delicate home exteriors, the Rose Power Washing team knows exactly how to handle each surface safely and effectively. They also specialize in preventative upkeep, helping homeowners maintain curb appeal and property value year-round.
EVERY DETAIL MATTERS
What sets Rose Power Washing apart is attention to detail. Tj personally inspects every project, and work isn’t done until he is 100% satisfied with the result. That meticulous approach ensures every corner, crevice, and panel gets the care it needs.
Clients often mention how the team goes “above and beyond” — from moving patio furniture and putting it back exactly in place, to carefully rinsing plants after cleaning. It’s that dedication that turns first-time customers into loyal advocates.
SERVING BOTH HOMES AND BUSINESSES
Rose Power Washing offers a wide range of exterior cleaning services:
• Residential: Roofs, siding, driveways, sidewalks, windows (inside and out), porches, patios, fences, and boat docks.
• Commercial: Restaurants, churches, banks, retail stores, schools, and fleet washing for transport vehicles.
Whether it’s revitalizing a lakefront deck or keeping a business storefront spotless, they have the tools, training, and local experience to handle it all.
A REPUTATION BUILT ON TRUST
In a small community like Lake Norman, reputation is everything — and Rose Power Washing works hard to earn it. Clients know they can count on fast response times, professional communication, and results that exceed expectations.
To thank those who spread the word, the company offers a referral program: 10% back in gift cards, cash, or money off a future service for every successful referral. They also give back to the community
with 15% off services for military, first responders, and teachers — a reflection of their commitment to serving those who serve others.
WHY NOW IS THE PERFECT TIME
Lake Norman’s humid climate means algae, mildew, and grime build up quickly — especially on docks, shaded siding, and concrete surfaces. Left unchecked, this not only dulls appearances but can also cause lasting damage. Regular professional cleaning is a simple, cost-effective way to protect your investment.
Many homeowners wait until the buildup is noticeable, but preventative maintenance is where Rose Power Washing really shines. As Tj says, “It’s always easier and cheaper to keep up than to catch up.”
THE ROSE POWER WASHING DIFFERENCE
• Local Knowledge: We know the region’s climate, surfaces, and seasonal challenges.
• Tailored Service: Every property is different — we adjust our methods to fit yours.
• Owner-Operated Quality: Tj personally ensures each project meets his high standards.
• Fast, Friendly Communication: You’ll never be left wondering when or if we’ll show up.
For Lake Norman residents and business owners, Rose Power Washing isn’t just another cleaning service — it’s a trusted partner in keeping the community beautiful, one property at a time.
