PRACTICAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR ENTRY POINT ACCESS CONTROL For busy facilities or corporate campuses with high standards for vehicle throughput and perimeter security, entry points represent a significant – albeit obvious – opportunity to shape the traffic environment; they are the single area where security and property management have the most ability to exert control over the movement of people and vehicles. As a result, Nick Valdez, specification sales team manager with Nice|HySecurity, says there are a variety of security and traffic management considerations to keep in mind when selecting the appropriate vehicular access control solution. He provides an overview of some of the most important of these. Firstly, and most simply, entry points should be used to regulate the nature and volume of vehicles. There is a constant, wide range of reasons for vehicles to enter a property; however, authorizing and pacing throughput with a management solution is both a prudent risk management strategy and a measure against fender-benders. Throughput management solutions can also be used to slow down arrivals as they are granted entry, so vehicles do not enter at high speeds, thereby enhancing pedestrian safety. These systems should also aim to optimize throughput and avoid backups, while deterring cut-throughs or otherwise aimless traffic. The deployed solution must have the capacity to allow industrial vehicles to enter as well, since commercial vehicles are commonplace visitors in many industrial and corporate campuses. Barriers are manufactured to meet the needs of the client and the site. They are available in different duty cycles for both commercial and industrial applications. The gates, barriers, and other vehicular access control solutions must be durable enough to meet the throughput needs of the site and also hold up against inclement weather, with wind being the most commonly overlooked consideration.

Valdez says wind is a powerful force and should be considered when designing and specifying an automated gate system, especially when dealing with a swing gate system. In certain cases, a strong gust can even mimic an accidental strike, tricking the gate operator into thinking it hit something. This higher level of security won’t be necessary in most commercial properties however, where a more appropriate solution will likely be a barrier arm. Designed to raise and lower for the regulation of routine traffic, barrier arms are efficient, versatile, and visible, making them an effective entry regulation tool. “For example, consider the StrongArm® from HySecurity,” says Valdez. “With a cycle speed of just two seconds to open and three to close, the StrongArm will slow traffic without allowing it to stack. Its 90-degree open angle allows for even the largest industrial vehicles to enter.” He says the speed and flexibility of barrier arms like the StrongArm have distinct advantages over slide or swing gate solutions, which feature far larger entrapment zones where pedestrians may become injured, especially if wind acts up, as mentioned above. Prioritizing additional safety measures like UL325 compliance and soft-start/ soft-stop pacing is yet another measure barrier arms should feature to protect pedestrians. For maximum safety, many barrier arms utilize a “breakaway arm.” In the event of a vehicle strike, this feature allows for damage to the arm without endangering the device’s more valuable motor or chassis. Maintenance staff can then bolt the arm back on after a crash rather than having to replace an entire system. LED lighting on the arm is another safety feature, as it allows drivers to see the barrier arm from a distance, giving them time to slow down and acting as a passive deterrent. Though individual traffic management needs will vary property to property, Valdez says the need to manage the flow of traffic – vehicular and pedestrian – is paramount to the safety and security of all. “The best management solutions always improve the property experience, so facilities managers, security staff, and contractors should keep each of the above considerations in mind when specifying their next property.” For more information about Nice|HySecurity gate and barrier solutions, visit www.hysecurity.com.

Fence Hog Does the Heavy Lifting ence contractors know the single greatest expense F when it comes to fence installation is labor. According to the Economic Research Institute, the 2021 U.S. national average salary for a fence installer ranges from $28,287 for entry level to $44,570 for senior level. Labor costs are compounded by sick days, injuries, cancellations and delays caused by weather as well as fluctuations in consumer demand. EZG Manufacturing engineered and created the Fence Hog in 2001 with the input and expertise of professional fence builders and installers from all over the world. “Fence installers needed a product that picked up a fence roll from the ground without physical effort and held enough fencing to eliminate the need for constant reloading. Minimal maintenance, reliability, and a short learning curve to operate this machine was also on the list,” explains Matt Schott, inside sales manager with EZG Manufacturing. “This machine can do all of that as well as minimizing injuries of employees since Fence Hog handles the heavy lifting, literally,” Schott says. The Fence Hog leverages the hydraulic power of a standard skid steer loader with a universal attachment plate. Its operation is controlled by the operator from the cab, including opening, closing and tilting the cage. Because there are few intricate parts, the Fence Hog is reliable, durable and requires virtually no maintenance. “Anyone who operates a standard skid steer should have no problem operating the Fence Hog,” says Schott. Typical hands-on familiarization takes less than three hours for a crew to become ready for an installation. The Fence Hog is available in three models with fence roll capacities ranging from 22” to 36”, 50’ to 100’ of chain link or 330’ of woven wire. The Fence Hog also accommodates vinyl coated fabric, snow fence, and most other fencing materials. “One of the great benefits of the Fence Hog are the reduction of injuries for employees, specifically back injuries,” adds Steve Wheeler, sales manager with EZG Manufacturing. Ergonomic hazards rank in the top five of workplace and jobsite injuries. Proper manual lifting requires a disciplined approach that is hard to enforce in small or unsupervised crews. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recommends lifting with legs rather than back, avoiding straining, not twisting or bending while lifting and lifting close to the body. “It’s not always practical or possible to lift in the recommended way because of uneven terrain, limited space and other factors that can vary on the jobsite,” says Wheeler. The Fence Hog dramatically reduces the weight and frequency of manual lifting during a fence installation project. A standard 400-pound roll of chain link fencing distributed between two workers, even if lifted properly according to NIOSH guidelines, still results in a potentially hazardous weight of 200 pounds per crewman. “The Fence Hog is the only product of its type that allows the user to pick up a roll of fencing from the ground with absolutely no manual lifting,” explains Wheeler. During a typical chain link installation, the Fence Hog eliminates much of the need for a crewman to walk along a fence line while carrying fencing or other heavy materials. Rolls of fencing are encased in the Fence Hog cage and rest on a rotating turntable ending the requirement for manual lifting and turning.

12

AUGUST 2021 | FENCE NEWS USA

The Fence Hog is forward driving, so the operator has a clear view ahead. Fence dispensing can be directed left or right, so the operator can dispense where access is easiest and least obstructed. The occurrences of slips, trips, and falls are substantially reduced because crew members do not have to walk while carrying and installing fencing. A recently developed accessory builds on the Fence Hog’s innovation. The Fence Winder attachment easily and safely retrieves standing fencing, recoiling it into roll form. “Some of our existing Fence Hog customers expressed a need for a product that would make it faster and more convenient to re-roll fencing,” Schott says. “The winder attachment was born.” The Fence Hog is just one part of a comprehensive line of fencing installation products that have become the industry’s complete, go-to fencing solution. The chain link fence stretcher and dispenser, the barbed wire stretcher and dispenser (Barbwire Hog, 2016), the woven wire dispenser (Stretch-n-Go Hog, 2006) all go about their respective tasks with remarkable speed and efficiency. The Fencer’s Cement Hog (2003) and Mobile Mud Hog (2003) allow cement to be dispensed while driving along the fence line. This is innovation that translates into real-life efficiency. A typical three team crew can cut installation time by nearly two thirds. Pressure on fencing contractors and installers to remain profitable and competitive continue to grow. Innovations such as the Fence Hog and its capable stablemates provide proven, results-based solutions to help the fencing industry survive and prosper in a rapidly changing economic landscape. Providing protection, security, and a unique opportunity for branding, sports field fencing, windscreens and netting are now considered an essential for ballfields, batting cages, tennis courts, golf driving ranges and sports complexes all over the country. Available in a myriad of hues to compliment a team’s colors, the intricate design and installation along with the numerous material options give athletic directors, sports field managers, and recreational property managers the resources needed to keep the sport safe and fun. This special section keeps you in the loop of what’s new and how it’s being used.

WINDSCREEN A CREATIVE AVENUE FOR FACILITY BRANDING

Lake Nona High School Athletic Director Aaron Crawford, CAA, has found the perfect solution for branding his high profile Florida facility. Using a creative combination of windscreen, banners, and graphics he has promoted his school’s teams, logo, and spirit throughout the campus in a way that reaches into his community. “We set out to upgrade our facility with some very specific goals in mind,” Crawford said. “When updating our football stadium we went with pre-fabricated aluminum bleachers because custom bleachers weren’t a smart use of our funds. Then we strategically employed high quality windscreen and graphics to gain a custom look for our field while accomplishing our need for security and to fulfill our desire to standardize our image through consistent branding.” Crawford had inherited inferior windscreen products that demonstrated the importance of doing things right the first time. After six months the colors had faded and the windscreen looked tattered. “Because we were extremely committed to our branding concept,” Crawford explained, “having our true school colors was important. I knew I had to find a company that offered quality products I could trust. I didn’t want to have to replace all our work in another six

months. I did some research and found Ball Fabrics, Inc., right here in my home state. I’m a difficult guy to please. I have high expectations. I knew what I wanted. But everyone from Ball Fabrics more than met my expectations. They understood my vision and showed me how I could accomplish our goals.” Crawford removed all the inferior, faded windscreen and replaced it with a calculated mixture of PrivaScreen where he needed more complete visual blockage, and ExtremeScreen where he needed enhanced durability and wind resistance. He commissioned a 552’ fence mural for the back of the stadium, which is a point of first contact for visitors. “Successful branding is the right mixture of several elements,” Crawford added. “With the exception of people actually attending a school event, most people in our community experience our athletic complex while driving by. We wanted to make a statement that would impact the entire community, so we unified our entire campus using graphics and windscreen. The colors and messages were carried over into our uniforms to build that consistent brand identity.” Over a four-year period Crawford implemented his plan one field at a time, one fence at a time, checking off one goal after another. Working closely with Ball Fabrics, he first completed the football stadium upgrade. Making use of Ball Fabrics’ professional graphics department, Crawford learned that he could depend on the company’s UV

coating to keep his colors sharp and true. “After two years,” he confirmed, “our graphics are still the exact hue of navy blue and gray. With the amount of money we have invested, we want to ensure it lasts as long as possible.” Durability is one reason Crawford chose to use ExtremeScreen around the baseball and softball fields. He appreciates the 7 year warranty backing the product as well as the clean, finished look. And, unlike any other windscreen, it stays on the fence and virtually eliminates the headache associated with wind maintenance. “Our custom graphics pieces really pop against the clean background we get from ExtremeScreen,” he emphasized. “And I know this windscreen will continue to look great for 5-7 years, maximizing our investment.” Most recently, Crawford has extended the unifying combination of windscreen and graphics to the school’s tennis courts and outdoor basketball courts primarily used by physical education students. His goal has been to extend the same clean look and security, complimented by school colors and logo, to every part of the school grounds. He is currently preparing to employ the same successful visual formula, windscreen and graphics, for a large practice complex being built on neighboring grounds, as well as a strategic Wall of Fame to showcase some of the school’s college signees. “Now, when people drive by our school, they see a unified athletic complex,” he said with satisfaction. “They can’t miss our bright school colors, our lion’s head logo, and our iconic interlocking LN initials. The clean, cohesive, professional look communicates that we are a force to be reckoned with, that we do things right. People can be proud they are in Lion Country!” He offered some final advice to other athletic directors. “There are so many competing products it can be difficult to make a sound choice for windscreen. Windscreens for a Variety of Budgets and Applications Windscreens are an essential part of any baseball or softball program that is looking to elevate not only the appearance of their ballpark, but also their players' level of play, and have been doing so for decades. By reducing wind and noise levels, windscreens allow for better player focus, which means they can perform at their best. “Another huge benefit of using windscreens is the incredible branding opportunity for your ballpark,” explains Ken Curry, president of COVERMASTER®. “The team’s logo is highly visible, and the space can be sold as advertising, bringing in additional revenue.” Previous COVERMASTER® projects include windscreens for batter’s eye backdrops; this ensures batters can keep their eye on the ball and eliminates distractions; outfield fence screens, special event backdrops, advertising screens, spectator shade covers, privacy enclosures, camouflage for storage areas, and much more. Made from high tensile strength fabrics, such as vinyl coated mesh, COVERMASTER® windscreens are available in a variety of weights and grades to satisfy a wide range of applications and are highly UV resistant. Additionally, they offer a variety of installation accessories, such as tie wraps and nylon rope, ensuring a perfect fit for each location. “We offer a variety of models of windscreen, ranging from budget-friendly to top-end, and a variety of accessories with every model,” says Curry. “We can work with any customer to achieve the look they have in mind.” For more information, visit www.covermaster.com, call 1-800-387-5808, or email info@covermaster.com.

Welded Wire Fencing Scores Big for Sport Fencing Numerous municipalities invest significant amounts of funding in the construction or renovation of sports facilities. If architects and project owners want to create a truly upscale look welded wire fencing offers many benefits for sports facilities. Welded wire fencing, which is relatively new in the U.S., is already well established in other international markets, such as Europe, where it is becoming a popular choice for residential, recreational, security and sports fencing applications.

Welded wire fencing, including the AMIGUARD® 5000 Series Welded Wire fencing from AMICO Security, offers many advantages. It is aesthetically pleasing, structurally strong, and easy to install, all without a significant cost increase compared to traditional sports fencing. There are several meshes available, ranging in different wire diameters or mesh patterns. This allows architects to utilize different meshes in difficult areas, such as behind soccer goals and baseball home plates, baseball batting cages, or around basketball courts. Lighter meshes can be used in non-critical fence sections, such as the perimeter of soccer and baseball fields, without compromising the overall look and feel. The AMIGUARD® 5000 Series Welded Wire fencing includes several different types of meshes. The AMIGUARD® 5500 mesh is a durable double wire panel. Its rods are welded at all intersections for strength and rigidity. These very solid .31”/.24”/.31” double wire fences with a 2” wide x 8” tall mesh pattern are perfectly suited for industrial estates, sports stadiums, public buildings, airfields, schools, etc. The 5600 3D V-mesh is a cost-effective solution for schools, residential, public, and commercial applications. The AMIGUARD® 5600 Mesh is ideal for the AMIGUARD® rail-less Spider Clamp System since the integrated V gives the 5600 Mesh a structural rigidity equal to that of a fence mounted on a rail system. The AMIGUARD® 5700 wire mesh design with a 3” wide x 0.5” tall mesh pattern makes it extremely difficult to scale or cut the fence without compromising visibility or aesthetics. The small 0.5” spacing between the wires prevents getting a foothold for climbing, and it delays or deters cutting because many power tools cannot fit between the bars. Most meshes are available in different wire strengths. All meshes are coated with a polyester powder coating over galvanized wire, and some meshes are available in Hot Dipped Galvanized finish. All meshes can be installed using the AMIGUARD® rail system or the rail-less Spider Clamp system. The Chameleon™ retrofit system provides a solution for replacing existing chain-link fabric with welded wire mesh while keeping the existing posts. AMIGUARD® 5000 SERIES WELDED WIRE FENCING IS THE IDEAL SOLUTION FOR SPORTS FACILITIES

AMICO’S WIDE VARIETY OF MESHES ALLOWS THE ARCHITECT TO CUSTOMIZE THE FENCE DESIGN TO SPECIFIC SPORTS SITUATIONS SUCH AS BEHIND SOCCER GOALS AND BASEBALL HOME PLATES, BASEBALL BATTING CAGES, OR AROUND BASKETBALL COURTS. THE TALL MESH PATTERN MAKES IT EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO SCALE OR CUT THE FENCE WITHOUT COMPROMISING VISIBILITY OR AESTHETICS.

Trex adds Custom Railing Design & Safety to New TQL Stadium 22

AUGUST 2021 | FENCE NEWS USA

Built by Cincinnati, for Cincinnati, TQL Stadium brings distinctive design elements and inclusive viewing experiences to one of the Midwest’s rising cities – just in time for the 2021 Major League Soccer (MLS) season. Known as “The Crown Jewel of Cincinnati,” this 518,000-square-foot, soccer-specific architectural wonder boasts nearly 20,000 linear feet of custom engineered railing from Trex Commercial Products, a leading national provider of architectural railing systems. “We are delighted to help usher in a new era of soccer for the city of Cincinnati,” says Laura Rygielski Preston, president of Trex Commercial Products. “In addition to equipping the stadium with seven different railing styles, our team custom engineered wire mesh fencing, gates and other architectural elements to further enhance fan safety and promote socialization without disrupting visibility of the action on the field.” Trex Commercial Products’ railing can be found both inside and outside the stadium, from the seating bowl, suites and exterior balcony to the concourse and surrounding gates. Cable and picket guardrail, Track Rail™ and drink rail provide secure access and convenience for the venue’s 26,000 spectators. Clear tempered, laminated glass railing with SGP interlayer offers unobstructed views and an additional, luxurious touch to the stadium’s flair. Further enhancing the facility, custom perforated guardrails turn the entry to the West Interior Club into a dramatic design element. A distinguishing aspect of this project was Trex Commercial Products’ highdefinition surveying (HDS) for its glass railing systems. 3-D laser scanning was used for precision modeling of the distinctive railing shapes and contours featured throughout the state-of-the-art venue. This advanced form of field analysis offers a wide array of benefits, including faster turnaround, improved safety, reduced rework and higher quality data capture. “This emerging technology is scalable and can be used for smaller venues as well as large-scale projects,” adds Rygielski Preston. “The scanning tool produces high-accuracy mappings of the area we’re working on with complex designs and geometries. These data points are then turned into a ‘point cloud’ file and provide extremely accurate dimensions quickly, safely and efficiently.” TQL Stadium broke ground in December 2018 and opened in May 2021. Fan Safety:

5

Things to Consider

The injury to a young girl at a Houston Astros game at Minute Maid Park in 2019 proved to be a tipping point, prompting a surge of news and commentary about improving fan safety at major league ballparks. “It is our strongly held belief that, at a minimum, attending a baseball or softball game should just be fun and safe, legalities and liabilities aside,” says Tim Freischmidt with Beacon Athletics. “But of course, it’s not that simple.” At the professional and college level, the ball moves fast — really fast. Much has been written and studied about how quickly a batter must react to a 100 mph fastball. One study says a hitter only has 0.412 seconds to react. The speed of that same pitch leaving the bat is even faster – 110 mph or more. Thus, fans have even less time to react to a sharply hit line drive heading foul. Not to mention, since they’re not playing, they’re more likely to be distracted, making them illprepared for the unexpected. This really is an important issue for ballfields at all levels of play. The professionals at Beacon Athletics have been installing backstop and protective netting solutions for customers for decades and Freischmidt says they are often asked for advice on fan safety and options for backstop netting. “Our immediate answer is typically the same, “It really depends on your ballpark’s situation, but there are some common features that should be considered.” The top five of these common features that Beacon feels should be considered for fan safety include:

1. Protect the bleacher areas.

4. Aesthetics matter.

It’s important to do whatever you can to protect all seating areas. Minimally, provide coverage for all spectator seating down the foul lines. In smaller fields, this may only be two to three sections of bleachers extending about 50 feet down the line. In larger facilities for professional and college teams, seating may continue from behind the dugouts to the outfield, in which case protective netting would ideally extend all the way to the foul poles. A netting system that keeps the view unobstructed will give your fans the best of both worlds.

A ballfield is a reflection on the community in which it resides. It can be a source of pride as well as a place where people come together. Providing unobstructed views of the field within a safe viewing distance is ideal and has a major impact on the overall perception of your facility. There is nothing worse than being stuck in a bleacher seat behind a 12-inch steel pole.

2. Remember adjacent activities. In an urban setting, there may be street traffic or a playground adjacent to the ballfield, in which case higher and longer netting is required. In a rural setting, you may have an adjacent cornfield where very little netting will be needed. Multi-field complexes in a clover-leaf design have become common, so the height of your netting becomes important for protecting fans watching games on adjacent fields.

3. Plan for tough weather conditions. Are you susceptible to hurricanes or unexpected spring snowstorms? You’ll need to consider protecting your investment. Investing in a winch system for easy raising and lowering can give you the speed and flexibility to quickly adapt to fast-approaching severe weather. Netting systems engineered to handle high winds or unexpected snow loads will save your netting assets, and save you repair costs. This will also help ensure your netting is always ready to protect fans, with no down time due to weather- damage. 24

AUGUST 2021 | FENCE NEWS USA

5. Consider all related costs. In some situations, the installation cost for a netting system can sometimes be more than the cost of materials (nets, cables, poles, etc.). It’s important to fully understand all costs that will be involved. For instance, a tie-back netting system may be more expensive when comparing the material cost, but it can also be considerably less expensive to install. Often, the tie-back system affords flexibility with how it can be integrated with the existing structures of a ballpark, making installation smoother and less costly than other systems. This is just one example of the importance of being well informed and aware of all costs before deciding on the best fit for your facility. “Outfitting ballparks with innovative and appealing netting solutions is a big part of what we do, and it has become very important for protecting fans,” says Freischmidt. “We are proud to be part of America’s pastime, and as our parents and coaches used to tell us, ‘Let’s have fun out there – and be safe!’” Beacon Athletics has been providing the finest athletic field maintenance equipment and education for groundskeepers, coaches and crew since 1948. Score Safer Home Runs This Season After being “benched” by COVID-19 for much of last year, team sports have made a big comeback in 2021. As players return to the field, facility managers remain focused on making ball parks safer than ever, including protection against accidental injuries involving chain link fences. Pexco’s PDS® line of Safety Top Cap™ and Safety Top Cap-LITE® fence top products can help. Available in two styles, PDS® Safety Top Cap products offer outstanding visibility for outfield fencing, heightening safety in two important ways. First, each product’s unique design provides added protection against bodily injury by covering the exposed knuckles or barbs at the top of chain link fencing. Second, by significantly highlighting fence perimeters, players are more quickly able to spot boundaries when running to catch fly balls, helping to reduce the number of accidental fence collisions. Safety Top Cap products also provide a colorful, decorative trim piece to enhance the look of any galvanized or colored chain link fence system. Available in highly visible Safety Yellow, many other colors can be ordered by special request (minimum order quantities apply). “We also carry an extensive line of chain link privacy slat insert products, enabling schools and sports facilities to create customized color combinations to promote their local teams,” says Rob Kilroy, director of sales with Pexco. Extruded from High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) plastic, Safety Top Cap products are blended with color pigments and ultraviolet (UV) inhibitors specifically designed to help mitigate the harmful effects of the sun and lengthen product life in the field. “Pressure cleaning of surface contaminants is quickly accomplished with plain water, making maintenance easy for facility

members who are already stretched thin during peak playing seasons,” explains Kilroy. Pexco’s original Safety Top Cap™ offers a unique, tubular “P” shaped design that fits securely over the fence’s top rail, providing a smooth, flat surface on the front of the fence. Conveniently pre-cut into 8’ lengths, Safety Top Cap™ comes packaged with five pieces per bag and installs easily and requires no special tools. Pre-drilled holes make the insertion of hog rings quick and simple for secure placement. Safety Top Cap-LITE® offers a more affordable, lighter weight version of the Safety Top Cap™ product. Featuring a teardrop shape, Safety Top Cap-LITE® comes in pre-cut 8’ lengths, is packaged with ten pieces per bag, and installs quickly and easily without any special tools. Pre-drilled holes make zip-tie insertion fast and simple for secure placement. Unlike bulky, corrugated top cap products which are often difficult to install, Safety Top Cap™ and Safety Top Cap-LITE® easily “snap” into place at the top of chain link fencing. Pexco’s PDS® products are also proudly Made in the USA. Perfect for any ballpark, recreational facility, school, or playground chain link enclosure, PDS® Safety Top Cap™ and Safety Top Cap-LITE® products can help add a home run to any facility’s safety regimen score. There are ten different and unique chain link fence products with nine slat color options and seven wire colors. These products come in three feet to 12 feet heights and privacy factors range from approximately 75 percent to approximately 98 percent, satisfying most sports field requirements. “The primary advantage of chain link fences with factory inserted slats is that we insert the slats at our factory, eliminating the need for installers to insert them by hand on the job site,” explains Steve Crosgrove, national sales manager with PrivacyLink®. “Since we ship each fence with the slats in the wire, installers can install the fence and the slats simultaneously in one simplified procedure, reducing labor and installation time and increasing company profits.” Two of the most popular products for sports fields are PrivacyLink® and Noodle Link™. PrivacyLink® decorative privacy fence slats are meant for installing into existing chain link fence to enhance the appearance and privacy of the fence. Their shape and color create an attractive look and feel to the finished project. “Our high-quality fence slats provide superb privacy, security and wind protection for previously installed chain link fences,” says Crosgrove. “Each one provides a different amount of privacy to fit the needs and specifications of each project. Championship Teams and Facilities Deserve a ChampionWall®

As we file the 2021 baseball season into the record book, CMI Limited Co., and its ChampionWall national distribution partner SportsEdge® would like to extend a congratulations to the Mississippi State Bulldogs for capturing the school’s first-ever national championship in Omaha last month. We also congratulate the Lady Sooners of Oklahoma for winning the women’s softball title, as well as West Texas A&M (Division-II), Virginia Wesleyan (Division-III) and the men’s Division-II national champion, Wingate, and Division-III champion, Salisbury (Md.) University. CMI and SportsEdge also would like to extend a congratulations to all the high schools around the nation that were able to complete a successful baseball season in spite of the challenges of the pandemic. These programs had elite seasons and deserve an elite facility, including a state-of-the-art outfield wall to hang that championship banner. Unfortunately, the outfield walls at many facilities have rusty, jagged, fencing; tattered windscreen; worn-out padding; splintering, rotting wood walls; chipped deteriorating concrete walls, or some combination of these, creating hazardous conditions for players. The offseason is the perfect time to address high risk areas of a baseball

facility. One way to gear up for a championship run is by adding a ChampionWall outfield system to a complex. American made, ChampionWall is manufactured by CMI, and the progressive athletic fence system is designed to give a sports complex a championship edge over the competition. A cost-effective, long-term solution, ChampionWall is made with interlocking synthetic vinyl sheets that are strong, durable, resilient, require little to no maintenance and are much safer than other options. ChampionWall is also made of 98 percent recycled material and is 100 percent recyclable. The outfield wall system includes a home run line covering the top of the wall. The wall is topped with CMI manufactured VersaCap®, a decorative capping option that creates a modern and attractive outfield wall. ChampionWall is becoming a common sight around the country as more than 60 high schools and universities are enjoying its features and benefits, including Coastal Carolina University, which captured a baseball national championship in 2016. ChampionWall adds to the grandeur of a complex and gives it a true ‘stadium feel.’ The extruded PVC material is the same material used for seawalls and is recommended by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers.

PRODUCT FEATURES & BENEFITS: • Safety - ChampionWall has an extremely low Gmax rating • Premium aesthetics • Sturdier and longer lasting – no rust or rot • Hassle-free with minimal maintenance • Variable heights customized to your specification • Optional, built-in batter’s eye in center field • Popular standard colors are Defender Blue, Challenger Green, or Eliminator Gray, with alternative options • Eco-friendly Learn more about ChampionWall at www.sportsedge.com/, call 1-800334-6057, or email Brandon Moose at brandon.moose@sportsedge.com.

Checklists for Pool Gates Safety Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death in children ages 1 – 4 years. The majority of the children who drown in swimming pools most commonly gain access to the pool area when there is no fence or through a faulty fence or gate. Combined with constant child supervision and other layers of protection, a possible solution to this issue is physically checking your pool gate and maintaining your pool gate regularly to ensure it self-closes and self-latches at all times. A gate that doesn’t close or latch properly, because it has moved out of alignment, sags or drags along the ground, is not only frustrating, but unsafe. Gates must be regularly inspected, physically tested and maintained by the homeowner to ensure safety. A fence is only effective if the gate and gate hardware are functioning properly. Gate latches and hinges must be manually adjustable to accommodate gate movement and gate closing speed. Never prop open a pool gate. D&D Technologies began as a high-quality swimming pool fence and balustrade company. Because of the poor-quality and ineffective gate latches and hinges being used on such critical applications such as swimming pool fences, D&D invented the MagnaLatch® magnetically triggered adjustable gate latch and TruClose® self-closing, adjustable polymer safety gate hinges. The MagnaLatch® ALERT is D&D’s latest pool safety innovation, providing both audible and visual alarms if the gate is not physically latched. Pool owners can see at a glance and hear from a distance if their pool gate is not closed or latched.

Safety Checklist for Pool Gates

Pool Fence Safety Checklist

• Gate should open outwards, away from pool. • Height of latch release mechanism is 54” from the bottom of the gate (check local codes). • Gate must be self-closing and self-latching. • Hinges should be rust-free and bind-free. • Hinges should be reliable and tension-adjustable for closing speed. • Latch must be adjustable horizontally and vertically to accommodate gate movement. • Gate will latch when latch is in the locked or unlocked position. • Latch cannot be disengaged using implements such as garden or pool tools. • Latch cannot be shaken or jolted open. • Gate will shut and latch securely from any open angle or force. • Complies with all applicable standards, codes, and legislation for pool safety.

AUGUST 2021 | FENCE NEWS USA

Never prop open a gate with objects or toys. Fence panels should be secure and in good working order. There should be no gaps or holes in the fence. Check for missing, loose, or rusted fence screws. Gap under fence to ground should be less than four inches. Objects that a child could climb on should be removed. Remove all toys from the pool so they are not tempting. Lock all pool chemicals in an area well away from children.

Biewer Lumber Announces Plans for a Second Sawmill in the South Executives from Biewer Lumber announce the development of a new state-ofthe-art sawmill which will be located in Winona, Mississippi. The Winona facility will be the second Biewer sawmill located in the state. The new sawmill will be modeled after Biewer’s Newton facility, which was complete in 2016. This new facility will bring 150+ new jobs to the area of Winona. “My family’s passion for the lumber industry has prompted this expansion in the south. There is no better place to grow the business than the fiber-rich state of Mississippi,” says Tim Biewer, president and CEO of Biewer Lumber. The Mississippi Development Authority (MDA) played a key role in site preparation and rail/road improvements. “The growth of companies like Biewer Lumber in Mississippi sends a strong message that our state has a supportive business environment and a skilled workforce,” says Governor Tate Reeves. “Biewer Lumber’s construction of a new sawmill in Winona is a testament to that fact.” The new Biewer sawmill is expected to be complete and operational by January 2022. Headquartered in St. Clair, Michigan, Biewer Lumber’s current operating structure includes five sawmills, three pressure-treating plants and a full-service Logistics fleet. Biewer Lumber manufactures and distributes lumber and building materials for use by contractors, builders, and do-it-yourselfers. Biewer customers include retail lumber yards, home centers, and manufacturers throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Terry Stephens STEPHENS PIPE & STEEL PRESIDENT AND FOUNDER

A summer job turned into a life-long career for Terry Stephens, president and founder of Stephens Pipe & Steel. His company currently employees 1300 people at 17 locations in 16 states. We talked with Terry to find out how it feels to have such a successful business in his hometown of Russell Springs, Kentucky. WHAT WAS YOUR INCENTIVE TO START THE BUSINESS? I was going to college to be an accountant and took a summer job for a manufacturer of farm gates. I stayed on as their bookkeeper and that led to my introduction into the steel business. That was in 1974. I started on such a small scale. It was more of a side-line than a business. In fact, in 1977, I was elected to public office and continued in that position for 12 years. When we started, J.R. Mann was the first employee of Stephens Pipe. He was a driving force behind the success from the early days of SPS until his untimely death in 2012. He was a dear friend and was known and respected by everyone in the fence industry. AS A NATIVE OF RUSSELL COUNTY, KENTUCKY, HOW DOES IT FEEL TO HAVE DEVELOPED YOUR COMPANY INTO SUCH A COMMERCIAL STAKEHOLDER IN THE AREA? I grew up here in Russell County. Working at a gas station, washing cars at the age of 13. Today, we are the largest employer in the county with over 700 of the best employees in the world. I give thanks to my Lord and Savior for all my blessings. I am extremely proud that our customers have made us the largest American-owned and operated fence manufacturer and distributor of fencing products. We make every effort to buy our raw materials domestically. I enjoy coming to work every day and hope to continue until the Lord calls me home. I am proud to have started this company in a small town in Southern Kentucky and watched its growth for the past 47 years. HOW DO YOU KEEP THE SAME STANDARDS AND CUSTOMER SERVICE FOCUS IN ALL OF YOUR LOCATIONS? 44

AUGUST 2021 | FENCE NEWS USA

We are blessed with having a great management team at all of our locations. I feel we share the same goals and the same principles of service and appreciation towards our customers. WHAT ALL DO YOU MANUFACTURE? We manufacture both round and square pipe, all types of galvanized and color chain link and framework, gates, kennels, temporary panels, Centurion ornamental fence, Generation PVC, ties, barbed wire and tension wire. We are a major stocking distributor of aluminum and steel ornamental, rebar, concrete mesh, DOT fence, guard rail, fittings and anything else our customers may need. IN MOST BUSINESSES, THERE ARE SOME LEAN YEARS. WHAT ARE ONE OR TWO CHALLENGING TIMES YOU’VE HAD IN THE BUSINESS AND HOW DID YOU COME OUT OF THEM? In the early years, we were always outgrowing our financial strength. Growing pains will test you in a variety of ways. The only way to overcome this problem is to outwork the problem. Usually that means working long

hours to meet the next payroll. There are always going to be challenges running a business, but I enjoy it. This is where my friends, my vendors, my co-workers and my customers are. These are the people I’ve spent the last 47 years with. YOU’VE CONSISTENTLY GROWN OVER THE YEARS, ADDING NEW LOCATIONS, EMPLOYEES AND SERVICES. WHAT WAS YOUR VISION FOR GROWTH THROUGH THE YEARS? Growth happens when you surround yourself with great people who deliver a good product to the marketplace. As our customer base continues to grow, we have to find ways to provide more and better services. WHERE DO YOU ENVISION YOUR COMPANY BEING IN 10 YEARS? I think we are well positioned for growth and I hope we can continue providing a good career opportunity for many more people.

Fencing Professionals Are Part of America’s First Line of Defense

Tom Luby, Business Consultant and Fence Industry Spokesperson

CYBERSECURITY WAS THE HOT TOPIC THIS PAST JUNE AT THE US / RUSSIA TALKS HELD IN GENEVA, SWITZERLAND. ALL EYES WERE ON BIDEN AND PUTIN AS THEY NEGOTIATED ARMS REDUCTION AND CYBERSECURITY. IT HIGHLIGHTED THE IMPORTANCE OF ALL FORMS OF SECURITY, INCLUDING THE KIND OF PHYSICAL SECURITY PROVIDED BY THE FENCE INDUSTRY. Who protects our physical infrastructure, our borders, our military bases, and installations? Who protects the protectors, the cyber technicians and government leaders and diplomats here in the US and abroad? Who protects our utilities, our airports, our businesses and even our precious children at school and other critical areas of our society? You do. Fencers everywhere, the men and women who manufacture, distribute, and install every kind of security and decorative fence and gates, access control devices and hardware all over America. From digging the holes, pouring the concrete, stringing the chain link, ornamental iron, aluminum, wood or vinyl, the folks who install all types of protective fencing are protecting America every day. Fence manufacturers, distributors and contractors alike have an increasingly important job to do, and you should all be very proud to do that critical job. You are part of America’s front-line workers. We all admire and respect our first

responders and our military, and with good reason. Firefighters, EMTs, policemen and our service men and women constantly train to save lives as first responders and defenders of our liberty and many times, thankfully, never use their training. However, the fence professional saves lives almost regularly without even knowing it. Whether it is protecting a critical infrastructure, hospital, or airport against those who would hurt us, he or she doesn’t know which life may be saved. Fences protect children by keeping them in the safety of their own yard, rather than going into the street; our pets receive the same protection from a fence. We all know that pool fencing saves lives. So yes, the fence professional can be classified as a frontline defender of our nation as well as accomplishing the actions of a first responder. Fencing is a fine and noble profession and I have always advised my clients to take pride in that work. Take pride in your trade and your

companies and raise the bar of professionalism to a new level; a profession worthy of a fair days’ wage for a fair days’ work. This concept of true professionalism in fencing is an underpinning component of the culture of success that I have been such a strong proponent of. I pray this higher level of professionalism can permeate into the fence culture and elevate the fencing experience across America. For decades, I have communicated the important concept of success closely tied to professionalism. It is even more than just a positive attitude in the workplace, although that is a fundamental component of developing a culture of success. It is a more like a profound lifestyle change that potentially can deliver an uplifting and happier state of mind at work and in life in general. One way to increase the professionalism throughout our industry is how we present our products and services. The sales staff in a fencing company needs to adopt a mentality of

value selling goods and services proudly and profitability, improving the standards of the industry to a level of professionalism that demands the phrase tradesman and not laborer or installer of fences. I hear the titles master plumber or master electrician, why not master fencer? “The American Fence Association is working diligently to provide a master certification in all aspects of our fence industry. There are technical panels working on master certification programs for chain link and gate operator installations,” says Tony Thornton, executive director of the American Fence Association. “Master certifications will be available for wood, ornamental, vinyl and agriculture at AFA University in the near future. Additional certifications are being developed for certified operations managers, certified crew superintendent and gate fabrication certifications. AFA continues to deliver education and certifications to elevate the fence profession in a positive manner. Be prepared to see AFA offer a company accreditation program for those individuals that have achieved the CFC designation. This will launch in the second quarter of 2021 and will provide a level of credentialing to the company.” Thornton continues, “We must look at other trades, like the electricians, plumbers, masons, the roofing and siding industries and see how they grew up, so to speak. A committee would then evaluate what these trades did and are still doing as an industry to advance the cause of their member tradesmen or tradeswomen.” Together, we can elevate our mindset and embrace the professionalism of our industry. Our work is displayed across the nation, and it provides much needed protection for people, animals, buildings and investments. Be proud of your work and understand how important it is to our economy and peace of mind.

Game Changers It looks like the fence industry is heading into some fairly good times. All indications are that most companies, from manufacturers to suppliers to contractors, were busy during the second quarter of 2021. We all know about the labor shortages and supply chain backups, but we are working through these problems and the future is bright. Assuming we do not have another big COVID-related setback (a big assumption, of course), maybe we can start to focus on where the industry is heading over the next couple of years. It appears the world has changed so much in the past two years that there just may be some opportunities out there for the fence industry to really have some impact going forward.

52

AUGUST 2021 | FENCE NEWS USA

Infrastructure. I know everyone is getting tired of hearing about the big infrastructure bill, and how it is going to be bipartisan, and how much money is going into it, etc. Maybe we should look beyond just the money and the projects. Maybe this one aspect of the economy can serve as a foundation for the fence industry to exert some real leadership and become a better partner for the other stakeholders involved. Why wait until the projects start being ramped up and rolled out? Why hope that there will be some big fence jobs that companies can fight over? We should start now to contact the decision-makers at every level of public works, highway construction, power plants, etc., and be a part of their planning team. We should show them how truly integrating their fencing program into the project at the very beginning can help them deliver a safer, more costeffective, and longer lasting project. Employment Opportunities. Take a look around. Much of the construction industry should be an equal opportunity employment mecca, with the fencing part of the industry being one of the most prominent proponents. There has not been a better opportunity in years for the industry to reach out to those who are looking for not only jobs, but careers as well. I know everyone is busy, or going to be busy, but don’t pass up a chance to build a stronger future for your company, your community, and your employees. Longer range thinking is needed, and the handwriting is on the proverbial wall. Government mandates, workforce changes, enhanced safety scrutiny, and the list of the workforce issues are here to stay, so be a part of setting the parameters. The Accreditation and Certification Institute (ACI) that was formed by the American Fence Association, the Chain Link Fence Manufacturers

by Mark Levin, CAE, CSP Executive Vice President, Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute

Institute, and other industry groups is starting to develop ways to attract, and keep, the best available workers for our industry. The ACI is a tool we can use to provide motivation, recognition, and rewards to our industry’s hardworking people. Ask how your company can support these efforts. Community Service. There were, of course, fence industry companies that suffered through the pandemic. However, in general, the fence industry fared much better than many industries that were not deemed essential. We all know that the fence industry has long had companies and organizations which, collectively, have done thousands of community service projects, donated millions in equipment and manpower and generously supported a wide range of local and state service organizations. Since giving back is already something our industry does in normal times, shouldn’t we be looking to reach out even further when times are tough? Check with your employees to see if any of them live in neighborhoods that need the kind of help your company can provide. Give your employees a day off (with pay) on a regular basis to participate in community service work. Adopt an organization in your community and partner with them on projects. What a better way and what a better time could there be to show support for our communities than by initiating programs, projects, and group efforts to help people and companies get back on their feet? Simon and Garfunkle sang a song about a “Bridge Over Troubled Water”. Well, we’re in the infrastructure business, aren’t we? Let’s get to work.

The Les Grube Design Award Applications Are Now Open The Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute (CLFMI) announces it is now accepting applications for its 2021- 2021 Les Grube Memorial Design Award contest. The award includes a uniquely-designed plaque and cash awards of $2,500 to the designing architect and $1,000 to the installing contractor and is given for the project which makes the best and most unique use of chain link fence materials.

Architects and contractors are encouraged to submit applications as soon as possible to be considered for the 2021 – 2021 award. The application is available online at: www.chainlinkinfo.org/clfmi-award-programs. For more information, contact Mark Levin at (301) 596-2583 or email him at info@chainlinkinfo.org.

Previous Winner: Tijuana Night Club Project

To qualify for the award, the nominated project must: • Employ an innovative use of chain link fence materials (fabric, framework, and/or gates on a commercial or industrial project.) • Be conceived by a professional architectural or engineering firm. • Be installed by a professional fence contractor. Entry forms are accepted prior to November 1, 2021. The award is named for one of CLFMI’s past presidents and a true legend in the fence industry. The award was established in 1984 during Grube’s term as CLFMI president. He was instrumental in outlining the award’s qualifications and establishing connections with the architectural community to support the concept. The first award went to architect Frank Gehry for his design of the sign at Santa Monica Place. Over the years, the award has been given to projects as diverse as the living façade of an airport facility to the design of a slam dancing nightclub in Tijuana. The 2020 winner was Urban Green Design, LTD and installing contractor Sentry Fence, Inc. for their work on the Midwest Development Project for medical marijuana researcher and producer Galenas, Inc. in Akron, Ohio.

Real good stains.

Developed in labs just like this one.

Did you know most stain products generally use lower grade pigments to keep stain costs low? Even some high-quality stains use low-grade pigments; a practice maintained through the use of solvents – the cheaper binding agent for properly suspended low-grade pigments, giving the stain its desired distribution of color. At Stain & Seal Experts, we create a different kind of stain product – a friendlier stain. Our stains address the big issues facing staining professionals, and homeowners – Protect the beauty and longevity of wood without compromising the environment, or personal health. It all starts with high-quality pigments and pure oil.

We know solvents are dangerous. They cause chemical burns on skin, melt through PPE, and can cause cancer if inhaled, or absorbed through the skin. They continue to evaporate, or gas off into the atmosphere, long after the stain job is complete. And yet most stain formulas contain solvent levels of 35% to 50%. Stain & Seal Experts believe a real good stain should do better – be better – create beautiful safe spaces – an overall healthier environment we can all enjoy year-round. Our stains not only use high-quality pigments but a binding system that can be suspended in pure oil, without harmful solvents. Most of our products contain less than 1% solvent. Now that is real good stain and real good news.
