ELEVATING FENCING SOLUTIONS WITH TRUSTED QUALITY

At Nationwide Industries ®, we are focused on providing superior fence and gate products that deliver reliable performance. This year, our commitment remains steadfast in offering solutions that emphasize quality and durability, enhancing safety and security to give you the confidence you deserve.

Introducing

Landscape Fencing, Decks, Railing, Pergolas & Arbors

Interest in outdoor living continues to grow, and the fence industry is expanding its boundaries to offer products, services and expertise to elevate outdoor spaces in multiple ways. From decking, pergolas, railing, gazebos and more, we’re showcasing some of the latest design trends and installation techniques shaping this exciting aspect of our field.

The Expanding Market of Exterior Wood Staining: Beyond Fences and Decks

In the ever-growing outdoor living industry, exterior wood staining has become one of the most profitable add-on services for contractors specializing in decks, fences, pergolas, arbors, railing and other landscape structures. Homeowners are increasingly recognizing the value of preserving and enhancing their outdoor investments. Not only does staining improve curb appeal, but it also extends the life of wooden structures by sealing and waterproofing the surface, protecting against the elements, and reducing costly repairs.

The Need for Protection in Every Climate Wood’s biggest challenge in outdoor environments has always been weather exposure. After installation, exterior wood structures begin to fade and deteriorate within the first year, often turning gray as mold and mildew take hold. If left untreated, the wood darkens further, developing cracks, warping, and splitting due to moisture fluctuations and UV damage. “By applying a high-quality exterior stain, contractors can offer homeowners a solution that prevents premature aging and extends the life of these structures by three to six years, depending on the product and application method,” explains Laurel McEuen, director of marketing for Wood Defender.

Preparation: The Key to a Flawless Finish

Whether adding staining services to an existing business or launching a new venture, McEuen says understanding proper wood preparation is essential. Before stain application, surfaces must be free from mill glaze, dirt, mold, mildew, and previous coatings.

• New Wood: Mill glaze is a common issue on smoothfinished boards, preventing proper stain penetration. It can be chemically removed or allowed to dissipate naturally over time. For pressure-treated lumber, it is recommended to wait at least three months before staining, allowing excess moisture from

the treatment process to evaporate. A moisture meter is a valuable tool to ensure the wood’s moisture content is at or below 13% before applying stain.

• Aged & Weathered Wood: Even older decks, fences, and pergolas can be revitalized. Cleaning with deck brighteners or mild bleach solutions removes mold and mildew, restoring the wood's natural appearance before staining. Proper rinsing and drying are essential to achieving a consistent finish.

Choosing the Right Stain for Longevity & Performance

There are two primary types of exterior wood stains: oil-based and water-based. “While both have their place in the market, contractors overwhelmingly prefer oil-based stains for their ease of application, uniform penetration, and ability to be recoated without extensive preparation,” says McEuen. She offers additional insight:

• Oil-Based Stains: These penetrate deep into the wood, offering long-lasting protection from within. When applied to saturation, they prevent lap marks, runs, and drips, ensuring a smooth, professional finish. Available in transparent and semi-transparent formulas, oil-based stains highlight natural wood grain or provide deeper color with added UV protection. Unlike waterbased stains, maintenance coats can be applied without stripping the previous layer, reducing labor and increasing

efficiency. Wood Defender’s 200 Series is perfect for decks and other horizontal surfaces, providing superior penetration and durability. Wood Defender Pre-Stain is ideal for pergolas, ensuring protection before the structure is even built, while the regular Wood Defender Fence Stain & Seal is specifically designed to keep fences protected and looking great for years.

• Water-Based (Latex) Stains: Commonly found in hardware and paint stores, waterbased stains create a protective film on the wood’s surface. They offer a wider variety of colors but require meticulous application to prevent streaks, drips, and uneven coverage. Over time, they are prone to peeling, cracking, and blistering, requiring caustic strippers and aggressive pressure washing before

reapplication. For structures with existing latex coatings, reapplying the same type of stain is recommended to minimize prep work.

Staining Beyond Fences & Decks

While staining fences and decks remains the core of many businesses, the demand for staining has expanded into other outdoor structures, including:

• Pergolas & Arbors – Protecting these focal points from sun, moisture, and weathering while enhancing their aesthetic appeal.

• Railings – Providing a durable, weatherresistant finish that complements decks and porches.

• Siding & Log Homes – Preserving natural wood facades against harsh weather conditions.

Torque-free digging eliminates kickback and reduces injuries.
Lightweight and designed for one-man operation.

The Importance of Product Knowledge & Manufacturer Support

“Selecting the right stain is crucial for both contractors and homeowners,” stresses McEuen. She says not all stains are formulated for all wood surfaces—some are designed specifically for vertical applications, while others work better on horizontal surfaces like decks. Choosing a stain backed by a manufacturer’s warranty provides additional security, ensuring long-term performance and reducing liability. Contractors should also prioritize products that are easy to apply, clean up efficiently, and require minimal maintenance for the homeowner.

A Growing Business Opportunity

Expanding into wood staining presents a significant opportunity for contractors looking to increase their revenue streams. “With the continued growth of the outdoor living market, demand for protective and aesthetic wood treatments will only rise,” adds McEuen. “Whether adding staining services to an existing business or building a new one, contractors equipped with product knowledge and application expertise will find an industry filled with potential for long-term growth and customer satisfaction.”

Trex® Outdoor Living Forecast Color, Comfort and Luxe, Customized Spaces to Transform Backyards in 2025

Outdoor living in 2025 is redefining how we use and enjoy our backyards, blending cutting-edge design, personalized touches and sustainable solutions. What began during the pandemic as a functional escape has evolved into a movement toward creating private outdoor oases that rival the luxury of indoor spaces with bold, imaginative and comfort-forward elements taking center stage.

“Homeowners today are thinking far beyond the basics of a patio and a grill,” says Adam Zambanini, COO for Trex Company, the world’s largest manufacturer of composite decking and railing and a leader in outdoor living products. “They’re investing in outdoor spaces that are as thoughtfully designed and well-appointed as rooms inside the home. It’s about creating an outdoor experience.”

The latest Houzz Outdoor Trends Study reveals that one in three homeowners are upgrading outdoor areas to expand their living spaces, signaling an appetite for innovation and indulgence. With an emphasis on convenience, style and eco-consciousness, backyards are becoming bespoke retreats.

As a trailblazer in outdoor solutions, Trex is at the forefront of this movement with the insight and ability to track evolving influences in the marketplace. Based on sales and input from contractors, retailers and consumers, the following are five trends expected to shape backyards in the coming year.

1. Seamless Segues from Inside Out

tLook for the lines between indoors and outside to continue blurring to the point of being virtually indistinguishable. Homeowners are increasingly seeking innovative ways to create seamless transitions that dissolve the boundaries between indoor comfort and outdoor enjoyment. Picture sleek glass doors gliding open to reveal a deck adorned with plush seating, cozy rugs and soft accent lighting – all the warmth of an indoor living room, brought outside.

“When indoor and outdoor spaces flow effortlessly, a home feels more harmonious,” explains Zambanini. “It’s no coincidence that our

latest decking offerings closely mimic the look and feel of indoor flooring. Featuring natureinspired hues and subtle graining, these looks offer the visual continuity and elevated style that today’s homeowners are seeking.”

Another way to extend indoor comfort outdoors is with the addition of a deck drainage system, such as Trex® RainEscape®. Designed to divert rain and snow melt away from a deck, this system keeps the space beneath an elevated deck dry and usable. This allows for furnishings, lighting, appliances and electronics to be added to create a patio area with all the comfort and function of an interior room.

2. Climate-friendly Features

As climate resilience becomes a top priority, outdoor areas are being designed to withstand every season and adapt to a wide range of conditions. Homeowners want solutions that offer a year-round balance of comfort, durability, ease and style to ensure these spaces remain practical and inviting.

A recent development in the decking realm is the integration of heat-mitigating features into boards to keep the deck surface cooler than standard composite boards of a similar color. Innovations such as Trex’s SunComfortable™ technology are leading the way. Available in the brand’s Transcend® Lineage® and Enhance® decking lines, these boards are designed to make lounging and entertaining more enjoyable.*

Trex composite decking is also ideal for use near water. From poolside decks to docks and marinas, its ultra-durable, weather-resistant surface can withstand decades of high tides, sand, cannonball splashes and sunscreen without losing its luster. Just an occasional soap-and-water cleaning is all that’s needed to keep it looking like-new.

“People want outdoor spaces that adapt effortlessly to their needs, no matter the climate, setting or season,” notes Zambanini. “Our Performance-Engineered™ products offer the ability to enjoy the outdoors in comfort and style, whether you live along the salty coast, high up in snow-capped mountains or in the heat of the desert.”

3. Cozy and Curated

Homeowners are embracing the charm of smaller, purposefully designed outdoor spaces that cater to specific activities like dining, socializing or unwinding. Rather than vast, open areas, they’re opting for well-defined zones that feel cozy and inviting.

Level changes, pergolas and privacy screens are among the many ways builders are incorporating definition and architectural

interest into outdoor spaces. Deck railings also play a pivotal role. Beyond safety, railings are a crucial design element that provides the frame to a backyard masterpiece. Sleek black-onblack railings continue to be a favorite choice for their modern, minimalist aesthetic, while cable railing and glass panels are ideal for optimizing views.

4. Merging Comfort with Convenience Technology is revolutionizing everything at home and the backyard is no exception. With smart features designed for both ease and entertainment, today’s outdoor retreats rival the sophistication of any indoor living area.

High-tech products like app-controlled outdoor lighting, weatherproof audio and entertainment components, automated irrigation and smart security systems enhance comfort, safety and peace of mind, while features like built-in USB ports, wireless charging stations and outdoor Wi-Fi hotspots ensure your backyard stays connected, whether you’re streaming a movie or tackling a work deadline in the outdoor office. Once considered indulgences, these additions are now more accessible than ever, making them essential elements for any backyard.

5. Harmonizing Sustainability and Serenity

In an increasingly fast-paced world, decks and patios are becoming personal sanctuaries that promote wellness and foster a connection to the natural world. From lush gardens to yoga platforms and tranquil water features, these serene retreats provide the perfect escape for relaxation and rejuvenation.

Sustainability is at the forefront of this transformation, as more and more homeowners seek to create spaces that are as kind to the planet as they are to the soul. Elements like eco-friendly decking made from recycled and reclaimed materials, energyefficient lighting, rainwater harvesting systems and the use of native plants not only reduce environmental impact but cultivate spaces that feel in harmony with nature.

Outdoor spaces will continue to transform and evolve, inspiring connection, relaxation and creativity. Whether a sprawling multilevel deck where every corner offers a new experience, a tranquil retreat by the water or a secluded garden sanctuary alive with greenery, the possibilities are limitless.

Frame It All Brings Cap Composite Fencing to North America

For over two decades, Frame It All has been a leader in sustainable, modular landscaping solutions, offering innovative products that combine durability, aesthetics, and eco-friendliness. Known for revolutionizing raised garden beds, edging, and backyard solutions, the company has extended its expertise to Cap Composite Fencing—a game-changing , high-quality alternative to traditional wood and vinyl.

“Our Cap Composite Fencing provides a durable, stylish, and environmentally friendly solution all backed by our 30-year warranty,” says Joel Cone, vice president of sales with Frame It All. “Designed for homeowners and contractors, this fencing combines recycled plastic and wood fiber to create a product that mimics the appearance of natural wood while minimizing maintenance requirements. This advanced fencing material has been successfully used in Europe for over a decade, proving its reliability and performance in diverse climates before being introduced to the U.S. market.”

One of the standout features of Frame It All’s Cap Composite Fencing is its advanced cap coating, which provides superior protection across all fencing products. Originally developed for window frames due to its durability and resistance to the elements, cap composite was later adapted for use in decking, where its ability to withstand heavy foot traffic, UV exposure, and moisture made it an industry favorite. Now, the same proven technology has been incorporated into fencing, offering homeowners and contractors a long-lasting, low-maintenance alternative to traditional wood.

Cone explains that Cap Composite Fencing is specifically engineered to endure the harshest environmental conditions. Its protective cap coating prevents mold and mildew buildup, making it an ideal solution for damp or humid climates. In coastal areas, where salt spray can quickly degrade traditional materials, Cap Composite resists erosion and maintains its structural integrity. Additionally, in regions with extreme sun exposure, the material’s UV-resistant

properties prevent color fading, ensuring that fences retain their rich, vibrant appearance for years without the need for painting or staining.

For those prioritizing privacy and security, Riviera & Valla Privacy Fencing provides an elegant solution. “Designed to enhance both functionality and curb appeal, this fencing style offers a sophisticated yet practical way to create a secluded outdoor space,” explains Cone. Engineered for long-term durability, he says these fence styles offer exceptional resistance to weathering and wear, utilizing a powder coated aluminum framework, making them attractive options for contemporary landscapes.

For those seeking customization in their fencing, Cap Composite Individual Pickets provide a versatile and durable solution. These pickets, available in 4ft, 6ft, and 8ft height and 5.5” and 3.5” width, allow homeowners to create traditional picket fences or more intricate, personalized designs while benefiting from the long-lasting performance of composite materials. “With the availability of dedicated Cap Composite pickets, contractors no longer need to repurpose decking boards for fencing applications, making installations more efficient and aesthetically refined,” says Cone. “Paired with Frame It All’s Cap Coat Aluminum Rails, this system ensures a seamless, cohesive, and durable fence installation.”

For those seeking a convenient and efficient installation process, Pre-Assembled Panels offer a ready-to-install fencing solution. Constructed using Cap Composite pickets and Cap Coat aluminum rails, these panels provide a fully matching framework for a cohesive and polished look. They simplify setup while maintaining the durability, strength, and aesthetic appeal of Cap Composite materials.

Cone says Frame It All continues to expand its well-established Cap Composite product range beyond fencing. “In the near future, we plan to introduce garden beds, decking, and landscape edging made from the same high-quality Cap Composite material. These upcoming additions aim to provide homeowners with a cohesive and sustainable approach to outdoor living.”

Trex Expands Mid-Tier Composite Decking Options with New PerformanceEngineered™ Boards

On-Trend Colors, Refined Aesthetics and IR Technology Added to Trex Select® Line

Over the past several years, Trex Company has unveiled innovations that have solidified its position as the leader at both the premium and entry levels of the composite decking category. This spring, the world’s largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking and railing will complete a strategic trifecta by strengthening its mid-tier offerings with the expansion of its Trex Select® line. Just in time for prime decking season, the company is rolling out three new colors featuring elevated aesthetics and performance –including the industry’s first mid-priced board with heat-mitigating technology.

“The Select line has held a pivotal position in Trex’s product portfolio for decades, providing a reliable mid-tier option, but it has been eclipsed in recent years by innovations at the premium and entry level ends of the spectrum,” explains Adam Zambanini, COO of Trex Company. “With these new additions, we aim to solidify our position in this vital space.”

Three New Hues, Performance-Driven Technology

To better align with current consumer preferences, the 2025 additions to the Trex Select line not only introduce a brightened color palette but an updated design aesthetic as well. Joining the existing shades of Saddle and Pebble Grey

are three fresh, on-trend hues featuring a new grain pattern with subtle streaking and refined embossing:

• Malted Barley – a warm earthy shade with soft and subtle grey undertones

• Millstone – a natural, weathered grey with a timeless shadowed undertone

• Whiskey Barrel – a rich, rustic brown complimented with cozy, refined streaking

Further differentiating these new offerings is the fact that they will be the first mid-tier options in the industry to feature Trex’s proprietary SunComfortable™ IR technology. Advanced heatmitigation properties engineered into the shell of the boards reflect the sun and keep the surface cooler than other composite decking offerings of a similar color.

“This breakthrough not only sets a new standard for comfort but also reinforces our position as a leader in performance-engineered decking solutions,” notes Zambanini. “In addition, Trex Select decking is also submersible and fully rated for W.U.I. (Wild Urban Interface) compliance, making it ideal for marine applications and areas susceptible to wildfires.”

Trex Select decking features a solid board profile that delivers increased durability, structural integrity and the ability to be curved. Boards

come in 12’, 16’ and 20’ lengths and accommodate the Trex Hideaway® Hidden Fastener Collection, allowing for a smooth, unfettered finish free of nails and other visible fasteners. Further enhancing its appeal, Trex Select is backed by a 35-year limited residential and fade and stain warranty and a 10-year limited commercial warranty.

“Trex Select is uniquely positioned within the mid-tier price segment, particularly by being one of a handful of decking products to feature heatmitigating technology,” Zambanini adds. “This advantage combined with the full board profile make Select ideal for price-conscious contractors, builders and homeowners who value durability, ease of installation and Trex’s trusted reputation.”

Like all Trex decking, Select boards are sustainably made from up to 95% recycled and reclaimed content and engineered with a proprietary, high-traffic formulation and ultradurable integrated shell that resists stains, scratches and mold. They won’t rot, warp, crack or splinter, and upkeep is hassle-free. No sanding, staining or painting is ever needed, and spills wash off easily with just soap and water.

Trex Select will be available throughout the Midwest and East Coast in April, with further expansion to the West Coast this summer.

The company's latest innovation

Fortress Building Products, a constantly evolving outdoor building products manufacturer, has added the Evolution Tile Deck Tray to its line-up of proven steel solutions. Designed for use with the Evolution steel deck framing system, the tray creates a reliable surface to install tile pavers across a deck. The company's latest innovation is available across Fortress Building Products' North American dealer network to help contractors deliver fire-safe, personalized outdoor living spaces that are built strong from the ground up. A purpose-built deck building solution, the 4' x 6" tile deck tray can be installed on top of Evolution steel deck joists. This creates a smooth and flat surface that makes the process of installing tile pavers, or a creative

combination of tiles and deck boards, quick and easy. The versatile steel tray works with any exterior tile and other framing materials, including wood. In turn, contractors are empowered to offer homeowners different design options and build a statement-making outdoor space that stands out in the neighborhood.

The design of the new Fortress® steel component provides fall-through protection and proper water drainage while creating an even surface for tile installations. Most importantly, it leverages the proven performance of steel. The durable tile deck tray will not rot, warp, split or deteriorate after longterm exposure to moisture, ensuring a structurally sound deck that lasts. In application, the steel tray will lay flat and stay flat. Noncombustible steel is also a Class A fire-rated building material, which means contractors who use the tile deck tray can complete fire-safe projects in regions that are prone to wildfires (including WUI zones) or densely populated urban areas where fire can spread rapidly between structures. Like the Evolution steel deck framing system it's designed to complement, the new tile deck tray is backed by a 25year limited manufacturer warranty for ultimate peace of mind.

"Fortress Building Products is committed to driving the adoption and usage of stronger, smarter deck building methods and products," says Jeff Schulz, senior vice president of sales & marketing at Fortress Building Products. "Adding the Evolution Tile Deck Tray to our line-up of steel solutions is one more way we're putting that commitment into action. It's a versatile product that helps contractors work more efficiently and effectively to deliver a longer-lasting outdoor space that brings their clients' creative design vision to life."

System Pavers Outlines the Top 3 Outdoor Living Trends Transforming Outdoor Spaces This Spring Warmer Temperatures Lead Homeowners to Crave Community, Comfort and Elevated Features

As temperatures begin to rise and homeowners prepare for spring, outdoor living trends are shifting toward comfort, functionality, and low-maintenance solutions. System Pavers, one of the nation’s premier outdoor living design and installation company, has determined the top three trends transforming backyards this spring.

1. Quality Time with the Family. Homeowners are prioritizing outdoor spaces designed for relaxation and quality time with family. Cozy, intimate gathering areas featuring fire pits, ambient lighting, and thoughtful landscaping are replacing expansive, open layouts. The demand for private outdoor retreats has also increased, with elements like decorative screens, architectural features, and lush greenery creating secluded backyard sanctuaries. “Our clients consistently describe their ideal outdoor space as a cozy, intimate retreat,” says Aaron Brundage, director of operations at System Pavers.

“By incorporating fire features, layered lighting, and versatile seating arrangements, homeowners have inviting and comfortable spaces not just for this spring, but for all seasons.”

2. Outdoor Kitchens Reign Supreme. Outdoor kitchens have transformed from simple BBQ stations into fully equipped culinary hubs. Homeowners are increasingly investing in high-performance cooking appliances, such as Kamado grills, pizza ovens, pellet smokers, and flattop grills. This trend reflects a growing desire for versatile cooking and dining experiences that go beyond the traditional summer barbecue.

“Today’s homeowners are looking to do more than simply grill. They want the ability to create a full outdoor cooking experience,” says Cassi Hallam, chief marketing officer at System Pavers. “We’re witnessing a strong demand for custom-designed outdoor kitchens that incorporate specialized appliances, sturdy countertops, and intelligent storage solutions.”

3. Enough Work Already. Low-maintenance materials are highly sought after by homeowners seeking long-term value and more free time.

Artificial turf, composite decking, and durable pavers offer enduring beauty with minimal upkeep, enabling homeowners to enjoy their outdoor spaces without the burden of frequent maintenance. Ecofriendly options, such as drought-resistant landscaping and turf grid designs, are also gaining popularity.

“The trend toward low-maintenance outdoor living is about more than just convenience—it’s about making smart, long-term investments,” Brundage says. “Materials such as artificial turf and highquality pavers not only enhance the aesthetics of an outdoor space, but they also reduce ongoing costs and labor.”

Spring is the perfect time to start outdoor renovations, ensuring that projects are finished before prime outdoor entertaining season. System Pavers has observed an increase in early spring bookings as homeowners aim to take advantage of favorable installation conditions, acquire highquality materials, and lock in pricing ahead of peak demand.

“With rising costs of goods and fluctuating interest rates, many homeowners are taking action now to complete their outdoor projects,” adds Hallam. “By planning in advance, they can secure the best materials, maximize their investment, and enjoy their upgraded space throughout the season.” For more information about System Pavers, visit systempavers.com.

Mark Dayhoff COO, TRIDENT ENTERPRISES with

Located in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, Trident Enterprises was established in 1984 as a livestock fencing installation company and has offered wildlife exclusion expertise for 40 years. In 1996, it transitioned from installation to a supply and distribution company, and currently offers a full line of fencing solutions, as well as complementary supplies, including its own brand of accessories. Trident also partners with other companies like Titan to ensure customers enjoy full access to everything needed for designing and creating their ideal fence solution.

Trident works with a diverse range of clients including homeowners, orchards and hemp farms, vineyards, federal agencies such as the National Park Service, wildlife conservation groups, as well as veterinarians, municipalities and animal rescues—practically supporting all demands for the exclusion or inclusion of wildlife and animals.

Mark Dayhoff, Trident Enterprises COO, has been with the business since 1987 and he manages the day-to-day operations. He’s spent his entire career with Trident and has played a major role in its success. Fence News recently caught up with Dayhoff and got the scoop on his journey with this unique fencing company.

Tell us about your roots.

I grew up in Walkersville, Maryland, just outside of Frederick. From a young age, work was a central part of life. My dad had a construction company, and summers were spent cleaning up job sites and gradually learning carpentry. We never took vacations or traveled – we worked. I always assumed I’d go into carpentry and construction, following in my father’s footsteps. That was the family trade, and I enjoyed the hands-on nature of the work.

But your life took a different trajectory. How did you find your way into the fencing industry? My first real exposure to the fencing industry was the day I met Jack Olive, founder of Trident Enterprises. When I was around 16, a neighbor of mine had started working for Jack and invited me to come along. My dad’s company was slow, so I figured why not? I met Jack while he was struggling to hang a gate, and without thinking, I grabbed the gate to help him. He immediately said, "You're hired." That moment shaped the rest of my career.

What was your first role with Trident, and how did you work your way up to COO?

I started out as a fence installer, primarily working on agricultural fences for horse and cattle farms. We dug holes, put in posts, and strung wire. Over time, the business evolved. As farmland

disappeared, demand for agricultural fencing declined. We began installing deer fences as suburban development expanded. Eventually, we moved into warehousing and distribution. As we shifted away from installations, I took on a leadership role managing the warehouse and logistics. When our previous general manager left in 2011, I took over day-to-day operations and officially became COO in 2021.

Sticking with one company for nearly 40 years is impressive in this era of career mobility. What has kept you with Trident, and what do you love about your job?

Two things have kept me here: opportunity and change. The business has consistently evolved, which keeps it interesting. One year we were installing fences, then we were selling them, then we were warehousing, then we were sourcing materials from overseas. Jack always made it clear that if the company did well, employees would be rewarded. Linda Sheehan, Trident’s CEO, has continued that tradition. Watching Trident grow from a small team to nearly 30 employees and knowing we support many families is incredibly rewarding.

How have you helped Trident grow and evolve over the years?

One of the biggest shifts I led was transitioning Trident from a fence installation company to a

supplier and distributor. Expanding our sourcing strategies was a significant milestone – finding high-quality products at competitive prices while maintaining profitability. We were once primarily focused on American-made materials, but to remain competitive, we diversified our supply chain globally. Today, our sourcing network includes suppliers from multiple countries, ensuring we can meet customer demand while maintaining the high standards Trident is known for. This strategic shift has been crucial in adapting to market changes and securing long-term growth.

Describe the challenges you’ve faced and how you overcame them.

Like any growing company, we’ve faced our share of challenges. One significant hurdle was navigating shifts in the competitive landscape when key personnel moved on. It required us to refine our strategies, strengthen relationships with customers and suppliers, and reinforce what sets us apart in the industry. Another challenge has been adapting to changing tariffs and supply chain disruptions. We overcame this by diversifying our supplier network, expanding into new global markets, and staying agile in our approach. Each challenge has ultimately made us a stronger, more resilient company, positioning us for continued growth and success.

What are your plans for Trident moving forward?

Expansion is the focus. We’re looking at a new warehouse local to our current facility, and possibly a West Coast facility, and continuing to grow our product line. The pet fencing market is a huge opportunity. We’re also refining logistics to maintain our competitive edge in shipping.

How do you spend your free time?

I enjoy traveling. Though work has kept me busy, I’m trying to make more time for fun trips. I’m also a history buff and love reading about the past. At home, I like working on construction projects. Over the years, I’ve expanded my house, built a garage and a workshop, even a treehouse for my grandchild. I like being able to build something and look back at the finished result. Most recently, I’ve accepted a position on the Waynesboro Industrial Development Corporation and am grateful to have an opportunity to contribute to the community that has been such an important part of my life.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Looking back, one of the biggest moments for Trident was our move from Frederick to Waynesboro in 2014. It was a massive operation, moving our entire inventory without disrupting business. Another turning point was transitioning from fence installation to distribution. Those strategic moves shaped what Trident is today. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m proud to have been part of it.

Linda and Mark Dayhoff.

84 Lumber Recognized on Forbes' America's Best Large Employers 2025 List

84 Lumber was recognized on Forbes' America's Best Large Employers 2025 list, ranking 34th in the industry. The nation's largest privately held supplier of building materials is among the 701 companies awarded the distinction after a thorough survey and review. The list was released in February and is presented by both Forbes and Statista Inc., a statistics portal and industry ranking provider.

Forbes and Statista selected America's Best Employers 2025 through an independent survey from a vast sample of over 217,000 U.S. employees working for companies employing at least 1,000 people within the U.S. Over 6.5 million employer evaluations were considered. The final score is based on two types of evaluations: personal (those given by employees themselves) and public (those given by friends and family members of employees, or members of the public who work in the same industry), with a much higher weighting for personal evaluations. More than 6.5 million employer evaluations were considered.

The of Motorized Gates

Motorized gates are no longer just a means of access control – they are evolving into key components of the modern smart home ecosystem. As homeowners demand seamless connectivity, heightened security and energy efficiency, the motorized gate industry is innovating at an unprecedented pace to keep up with broader smart home trends.

Home automation is becoming increasingly sophisticated, and motorized gates are following suit. Industry leaders are prioritizing interoperability, allowing gates to integrate seamlessly with smart home platforms like Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit. This enables homeowners to control gate access through voice commands, mobile apps, and even AI-driven automation that responds to real-time conditions.

“The ability to open, close and monitor a gate remotely, whether it’s through a smartphone app or voice assistant, adds a layer of convenience and security that modern-day consumers are demanding,” says Lisa Steinberg, senior product manager for Residential Gate at Nice North America. “As IoT technology advances, we’ll see even more intuitive and predictive gate control solutions.”

Next-Level Security & Safety

Security remains a top priority, and the latest advancements in motorized gate technology reflect that. AI-enhanced monitoring systems

can now analyze movement patterns and detect unusual activity, sending real-time alerts to homeowners. Biometric authentication, such as fingerprint or facial recognition access, is also gaining traction, reducing the risk of unauthorized entry. License plate recognition is becoming a sought-after feature, allowing gates to automatically grant or restrict access based on preapproved vehicle credentials. At the same time, cybersecurity measures are improving to protect gate systems from potential hacking threats.

Sustainability in Gate Automation

With eco-conscious home upgrades on the rise, sustainability is becoming a crucial factor in motorized gate design. Solar-powered gate motors are gaining popularity, offering an energy-efficient solution that reduces reliance on traditional power sources. Additionally, manufacturers are exploring the use of recycled and eco-friendly materials to design gates and gate operators that are both durable and environmentally responsible.

“Homeowners are looking for sustainable options in every aspect of their home, and gate automation is no exception,” Steinberg notes. “Solar-powered gates not only lower electricity costs but also provide a reliable solution in areas that are remote or prone to power outages.”

Customization & Aesthetic Appeal

Beyond functionality, modern motorized gates are also being designed with aesthetics in mind. Homeowners want gates that complement their property’s overall look, leading to increased demand for sleek, customizable designs. Whether it’s minimal steel, rustic wood finishes, or fully automated slide glass gates, manufacturers are offering a range of options that blend security with curb appeal.

As the motorized gate industry continues to evolve, staying ahead of these trends will be essential for manufacturers, dealers, and installers. The push towards seamless smart home integration, advanced security features, sustainability, and customized designs presents both challenges and opportunities. Those who embrace innovation and adapt to shifting consumer expectations will not only enhance customer satisfaction but also carve out new revenue streams in the ever-expanding smart home market.

For industry professionals, now is the time to explore these advancements and position themselves at the forefront of the next generation of motorized gate automation. The future is not just about access, it’s about intelligence, security, and sustainability.

Other branches opt for charities that hold special significance to their contractor customers, fostering a deeper sense of community and shared purpose. For instance, one of Master Halco’s Dallas branches chose The Samaritan Inn, a North Texas charity that holds a close personal connection to the Ace Fence DFW crew. The Samaritan Inn is dedicated to helping with homelessness and the Dallas #156 Branch is proud to partner with them. Master Halco’s vendors and suppliers also patron Master Halco Gives Back. Management Corner REASONS SMALL BUSINESSES NEED A LAWYER TOP10

Running a small business comes with countless challenges, and legal issues can quickly become one of the biggest. While some matters—like basic contracts—may seem manageable on your own, navigating complex legal situations without an attorney can be risky and costly. Here are 10 reasons why small business owners should have a lawyer on their side:

1. Business Laws Are Complex. From forming an LLC or corporation to drafting contracts and handling employment laws, business regulations can be overwhelming. A lawyer ensures you follow the right legal structure and avoid common pitfalls.

2. Legal Mistakes Can Cost You. One poorly written contract or misunderstanding of labor laws can lead to lawsuits, fines, or lost profits. Investing in a lawyer upfront helps prevent costly errors down the road.

3. Contracts Need to Protect You. Whether dealing with vendors, employees, or clients, contracts define your rights and responsibilities. A lawyer drafts, reviews, and negotiates contracts to ensure they work in your favor and protect your business.

4. Employment Laws Are Tricky. Hiring, firing, wages, workplace safety—labor laws are constantly evolving. A lawyer helps prevent wrongful termination claims, wage disputes, and compliance violations that could damage your business.

5. You May Face a Lawsuit. Small businesses are common targets for customer complaints, employee disputes, or breach-of-contract claims. An attorney helps defend your business and minimize liability before issues escalate.

6. Protecting Intellectual Property Matters. Your business name, logo, product designs, or proprietary methods are valuable assets. A lawyer ensures your trademarks, copyrights, and patents are legally protected.

7. Tax and Licensing Compliance. Missteps with tax filings, permits, or business licenses can result in heavy fines or legal trouble. A business attorney helps keep you compliant and avoid IRS issues.

8. Negotiating Leases & Business Agreements. Renting office space or partnering with another company? Leases, purchase agreements, and partnerships require legal review to ensure you don’t sign a bad deal.

9. The Other Party Has Legal Representation. If you're negotiating with investors, landlords, or vendors, they likely have lawyers. Having your own ensures you don’t get taken advantage of in important agreements.

10. Free Consultations Are Available. Many business attorneys offer free initial consultations, so there’s no harm in discussing your situation and getting professional advice before making key business decisions.

Don’t wait for a problem to arise— consult a lawyer today to safeguard your business. Small businesses that work with attorneys from the start are better prepared to protect their assets and ensure long-term success.

The Fox and the Leopard

Self-Aware Leadership: Understanding Yourself First

As a kid, I loved Aesop’s Fables and how they taught real life lessons. One of my favorites is the story about the fox and a leopard who were arguing about which was more impressive. The leopard boasted about his spotted coat, claiming that his striking appearance made him superior. The reflective fox replied, "Your coat may be beautiful, but I am more valuable because I have a mind full of creative ideas."

This fable suggests an essential lesson of leadership. External appearances and surfacelevel accomplishments do not define a leader’s value. In leadership, self-awareness, knowing your strengths, blind spots, and how you learn—is far more valuable than any job title or outward displays of status.

Here are a few ways to develop self-awareness as a leader.

Be Authentic. A leader’s credibility stems from authenticity. Recognizing how your actions influence others allows you to model the behaviors you expect. If you value accountability, be the first to acknowledge your mistakes. If you promote hard work, demonstrate grit and resilience in the face of setbacks. Being authentic ensures that your leadership is intentional and aligned with your values, rather than being driven by external pressures.

Communicate with Awareness. Effective communication requires an understanding of not just what you say, but how you say it. Self-aware leaders listen actively, regulate their emotions, and adjust their approach based on their audience. By being conscious of how your words affect others, you create a culture of openness and trust. When a leader’s messages lack self-awareness, they can be misinterpreted, leading to confusion, frustration, or disengagement.

Adapt by Recognizing Your Blind Spots. I learned this from an AFA past president who was very self-aware. Effective leaders acknowledge that they don’t have all the answers. By recognizing personal biases and blind spots, they stay open to feedback and

new ideas. Flexibility and adaptability stem from a willingness to self-reflect, learn, and evolve with changing circumstances. Leaders who ignore their blind spots risk making poor decisions based on incomplete perspectives, leading to stagnation or misalignment with their teams.

Foster Growth Through Personal Development. A leader’s growth fuels the growth of their team. Prioritizing selfimprovement—whether through feedback, learning, or mentorship—sets an example for continuous development. When leaders embrace learning and self-awareness, they create an environment where growth is valued at every level.

Make Decisions with Integrity and SelfReflection. Every decision a leader makes carries consequences. Self-awareness helps leaders pause and assess their motivations, biases, and ethical responsibilities. By reflecting on how choices align with values and impact others, leaders make more thoughtful, principled decisions that inspire trust and respect. Without self-awareness, leaders may act impulsively or prioritize personal gain over the well-being of their team.

Inspire Others by Understanding Your Purpose. Authentic motivation stems from a clear sense of purpose. Self-aware leaders understand their own “why” and use it to inspire those around them. By aligning actions with personal and organizational values, they create meaningful work environments that drive engagement and success.

Be More Fox Than Leopard. Leadership begins with self-awareness. The more a leader understands themselves, their strengths, blind spots, and opportunities for growth—the better they can lead with authenticity and empathy. The lesson from the fable is that it’s better to be the confident fox, knowing your strengths, rather than the boastful leopard, focused on how you look or the title that you have. Whether you’re leading a team, a project, or simply striving to improve yourself, selfawareness is the key for leadership impact.

There Are a Lot of People Out There Suffering From PFD*

What do you mean, you mean you never heard of PFD? I thought everyone knew about it.

It is nothing like COVID; it is not a medical disease, although it does spread to people who are congregating in large groups (i.e., the exhibit hall).

FenceTech 2025 in Salt Lake City seemed to be a big success. Why would it cause any kind of distress? Well, for starters, it happens pretty much every year, but this year might have been the biggest “spreader” of PFD that we have had in several years.

To know whether or not you have PFD, here is what to look for now that you have been back at work for a few weeks.

• Do you get panicky when you cannot find that business card you got at FenceTech that had contact information on it for that prospective customer you met? You know it’s here somewhere!

• Have you been thinking about what that chain link manufacturer told was going to happen to prices if Trump’s tariffs on Canada and Mexico stay on for any length of time?

• Did you just realize you don’t have any backup suppliers if shortages arise due to supply train problems or “hoarding” of product by your competitors?

• Does the fact that one of the FenceTech speakers reminded you that the U.S. fence industry gets approximately 30% of its wood from Canada keep you up at night?

• Are you still looking for all of your FenceTech notes you put on to your “when I get a few minutes” list?

• Are you having nightmares about stopping by the Fencing Supply Group booth for the fifth time and finding out they are out of beer!

If you have any of the above, then you have PFD. If you have more than one of the above, you have PFD Plus.

If you have three or more of the above, you have PFD Plus, plus you have a lot on your plate right now.

I think it is funny that we all came to FenceTech hoping to make some new contacts. It is not until we leave FenceTech that we realize how much extra work we just made for ourselves by making all those contacts.

NOW the PFD kicks in.

When should I follow up? Is it too soon, too pushy, to follow up on Monday? Is it too late to follow up now since I didn’t do it within a week after the show?

I have got at least eight decent leads. How do I decide which ones are my best leads, so I can follow up with them before the others?

It’s not like I was not busy before I went to FenceTech. Then I took a week off to go, so I am even further behind than I was when I left.

The good news is that PFD is not life-threatening. You don’t have to get any shots or stay six feet from anyone on the job site or in your office, and fortunately, there are a few things you can do to recover from a case of PFD:

• Start talking to your suppliers and see if they can tell you what their backup plans are if materials start becoming scarcer or more expensive. Maybe you need to diversify your supply lines a little. Start by looking at more local suppliers.

• Be prepared for some price increases if this tariff war continues. Start thinking now about how you will approach your customers with the unwelcome news that you have to raise your prices. Just saying,” Everybody is raising prices; there’s nothing I can do about it,” is not going to cut it.

• Take another look at that list of contacts you made at FenceTech. Are they all really “good prospects” as customers or suppliers? Go back and prioritize them again.

You can make PFD a short-term condition by having a plan when you get to FenceTech, and a realistic goal for what you will take away from it. Keep in mind that there are some benefits to just being part of the industry’s biggest event.

Oh, and don’t worry. You will suffer from PFD again next year – it’s a seasonal condition!

Expanding into High Security Fence Applications

I’ve written previously about the diversity of products within the fence industry. If you had the opportunity to attend FenceTech in February, you saw some of the tried-and-true products you use every day, but you also got to see some of the most innovative and advanced perimeter security products on the market. Serving levels of need, including Crash Resistance, Climb Resistance, Cut-Through Resistance and so much more.

Whether you are protecting kids at school, fortifying critical infrastructure or just making a site a little safer, these new technologies may seem a little complex, but can add to your portfolio of product offerings, provided you prepare properly. Here are some steps to get started:

1) Simply put, these products are complex. There are very strict installation requirements that provide very little wiggle room for variations or on-site adjustments. DO NOT bid these projects on a guess. Talk to the manufacturers. Complete product training. Talk to other trusted contractors. Find a mentor company who may allow you to work with their teams or even hire your staff to assist and observe.

2) Read the instructions… twice. The old saying, “Measure twice, saw once,” certainly applies here. These technologies require a different level of expertise and attention to detail.

4) Take it very seriously. The reason these products exist is because bad things continue to happen. We use these systems to mitigate and prevent bad things from happening. They are being installed to protect our children, our families, our activities, and our way of life. Customers need to have confidence they will work as intended.

If you are thinking of expanding and entering this segment of the fence industry, it can truly be a rewarding and profitable experience. It takes the importance of the products we install and the industry we love to a whole new level. High security perimeter fence literally is the first line of defense in protecting the things we care about. I encourage you to learn more.

With nearly 40 years of experience in the fence industry, Robert Miller is president of Imperial Professional Consulting specializing in the perimeter security industry. He is committed to lifelong learning to ensure that the latest trends and standards of the industry are being utilized for complete and effective perimeter security solutions.

3) Do not adjust anything without manufacturer or engineer approval. Many products are tested to strict ASTM standards. Not only will you potentially compromise the products intended performance by adjusting on your own, but you open yourself for major litigation in the event of product failure.
