Azenco R-Blade Pergola Receives
Hurricane Certification
Azenco Outdoor has received the prestigious Notice of Acceptance (NOA) Compliance for its best-selling R-BLADE bioclimatic pergola. The Miami-Dade NOA certification is recognized across multiple states and is a key indicator of a structure’s ability to withstand extreme weather conditions, including hurricane-force winds. After many years of development to address multiple aspects of the technology needed to achieve the certification, Azenco Outdoor’s one-of-a-kind pergola is the preferred option for a home’s outdoor living space longevity and resale value above the more common DIY kits on the market.
Why the NOA Certification Matters
• Built for High Winds—Miami-Dade is in a hurricane zone, meaning structures must endure intense wind loads. R-BLADE has passed rigorous wind-pressure testing, proving its resilience.
• Engineered for strength—Professional engineers have tested every detail, including foundations, anchoring, and overturning resistance, ensuring structural integrity.
• Corrosion-resistant materials—Florida’s salty, humid air can wear down standard materials, but R-BLADE uses high-quality, corrosionresistant screws and metals for long-lasting performance.
• Proper installation is key—To maintain compliance, R-BLADE must be installed exactly according to manufacturer guidelines by certified dealers.
• Hurricane-smart design—The pergola’s louvers can be opened during extreme wind events to reduce pressure, a critical feature for storm safety.

Agriculture, Pet and Wildlife Fencing
There’s no limit to the diverse applications of fencing in agriculture, wildlife management, and pet containment. From safeguarding crops and livestock to protecting natural habitats and ensuring pet safety, we’re taking a closer look at fencing solutions that help manage and preserve our environments.
Wildlife-friendly fencing installed at the Coldwater Canyon Wildlife Management Area.
WILDLIFE-FRIENDLY FENCES
CONSIDER WILDLIFE NEEDS AND MOVEMENT WHEN DESIGNING A BACKYARD FENCE OR RANCH FENCE IN THE WILDLAND-URBAN INTERFACE.
The American West is covered with networks of fences that have been installed for a variety of purposes: property boundary separation, livestock management, trespass prevention, or keeping children and backyard pets safe. However, many of our fenced-off areas are also important for wildlife habitat and movement across the landscape. And as our cities and suburbs expand into previously undeveloped areas, our structures, roads and other barriers — including fences — can act as an unintentional but often fatal restriction for many wildlife species.
Fortunately, there are many fencing options available to meet the needs of landowners while also keeping wildlife safety, health and movement in mind.
When wildlife movement and fencing are at odds
Much of Utah's public and private lands have been used historically as wildlife migration corridors; routes that wildlife follow between summer and winter habitat that are based on learned patterns. Migration corridors are areas of land that possess resources for wildlife such as food, water and shelter. These habitats are often hemmed in by miles of fencing that wildlife navigate through or perish on. Fences not designed with wildlife in mind can have negative effects on wildlife populations.
Large mammals
Some of the impacts of fencing choices are observable, such as a deer impaled and hanging from a wrought iron fence in a backyard garden. Or the suffering and eventual death of a deer that gets a hoof caught in a loose top wire of a barbed-wire fence. Even when animals free themselves from fences, there's an increased risk of dying from infected cuts and wounds they incidentally receive while struggling to get out. Or, young fawns can perish from starvation when they can't follow their mother to a seasonal range due to a fence barrier.
Even when animals free themselves from fences, there are still risks and impacts.
Other impacts are less visible, such as reducing gene flow and genetic diversity in fence-restricted wildlife populations, making
DWR wildlife technicians are often called to remove dead or dying animals impaled on backyard fences, such as this mule deer in a northern Utah neighborhood. Note: a portion of this photo has been obscured.
them more vulnerable to diseases. And wildlife risks are often dependent on the fence condition; damaged and dilapidated fences can tangle and entrap many wildlife species at all stages of life.
Decorative yard fences can be a danger to wildlife
Wrought iron decorative fences with pointed top posts are among the most deadly types of fences encountered by deer and elk in the wildland-urban interface and backyards:
• Every year, DWR staff respond to many residential neighborhood encounters of deer or elk impaled in the abdomen or caught by a back leg, and then suffering and dying. No wildlife survives impalement.
• Fawns may become trapped between the spaces of wrought iron fences, preventing them from moving forward or backward. While caught in the fence, fawns attempt to wiggle, crawl or climb out. The friction from the fence rubs the hair off and lacerates the delicate skin on their haunches.
• If they escape, they have minor injuries at best. Unfortunately, the most common outcomes are dislocated hips (for fawns), bacterial infection, or blowflies laying eggs in the exposed wounds and becoming infested with maggots. All of these are fatal to the animal.
When responding to a wildlife conflict, DWR personnel must evaluate if the animal has a chance to survive or not. Unfortunately, most animals caught in fences must be euthanized. When possible, an attempt to have the animal carcass donated is made if the meat is in good condition. If the animal is not in a condition to be donated, it is removed, and the carcass disposed of in the county landfill.
Birds
Fences with low-visibility metal wires can have negative impacts on bird species if they collide with the wire. Common fence collision injuries in birds are broken wings and ruptured crops. These types of injuries prevent birds from escaping from predators or capturing prey, which shortens their lifespans. Fences can restrict migration, daily movements and cause deadly tangles.
Options for wildlife-friendly fencing
Fortunately, fences can be designed to encourage historical migration patterns and wildlife movement on both a large and small scale. Whether on an expansive ranch or in an urban backyard, adaptive fencing can keep wildlife safe and meet the goals of landowners.
Wildlife-friendly fence design can make a significant positive difference on the landscape.
Residential fences in the wildland-urban interface
While the best fence for wildlife is no fence at all, fences to delineate property lines, discourage trespassing or maintain privacy are often a necessity. Keep wildlife movement and access to food and water in mind when selecting your fence design and materials.
Some creative fencing solutions to consider:
• A line of trees, shrubs or other vegetation can be used to mark a boundary. In addition to creating a living screen for privacy, this choice can provide additional food and cover for wildlife.
• Mark property boundaries with signs, flexible fiberglass or plastic boundary posts, or fence posts spaced at intervals without crosswires.
A long-eared owl died after colliding with this range fence in western Utah. Creating a visual cue on the fence, such as fence markers or flagging, may have prevented this entanglement and death.
• If you only fence the portions of your property that you need to protect — for example, just a play yard or garden, instead of the entire property line — you'll be saving time, money and wildlife.
• To prevent access by vehicles, consider using bollards — short stout barrier posts — instead of fences. They can define a driveway or parking area, or edge a lawn or field.
If you are worried about deer or elk damaging your garden vegetables, fruit trees or other plants in your yard, an exclusion fence prevents wildlife from the area by preventing entry:
• An eight-foot-tall fence is typically an effective barrier. This height discourages elk and deer from jumping over the fence, and minimizes the risk of death or injury on the fence itself.
• Make the top of the fence highly visible with flagging, white tape or wire, or a rail.
• Note: Check your local ordinances for fence height restrictions.
• Visit Wild Aware Utah for more information about deer-proofing .
Working land fences
To keep livestock within a controlled area — and have fewer wildlife conflicts, damage and injuries — there are important strategies to consider, such as the height of the fence and materials used.
Studies have shown that the following fencing strategies adequately control livestock while also aiding wildlife movement:
• Allowing a 16-inch bottom wire gap from the ground allows fawns to crawl under a fence.
• Placing a taut, smooth top wire at a maximum of 42 inches (or more preferable, 38–40 inches) height allows wildlife to jump over the top of a fence with fewer injuries and less risk of hoof or leg entanglement.
• Allowing for a 12-inch gap between the top and second wire gives enough spacing to minimize the two wires tangling a hoof or leg.
• To decrease bird collisions, place high visibility fence markers, flagging or a smooth PVC covered top rail on the fence.
• Fence markers can reduce collisions for sagegrouse by over 80% and are a simple yet effective tool.
Fence projects in Utah: enhancing wildlife movement
Collaborative efforts are underway in Utah to map fence conditions on public lands, and improve fence conditions to enhance safe wildlife movement. Along with the Bureau of Land Management, Sageland Collaborative, Wildlands Network and a wide-ranging group of stakeholders, we are embarking on a new fence mapping initiative.
With our robust group of community scientists, we are inventorying fence conditions and wildlife movement barriers beginning with a survey of public lands managed by the BLM. This project will provide land managers with a wealth of information to pair with GPS tracking technology. For example, we'll be able to compare wildlife movement behaviors near fences and evaluate the response of migratory wildlife populations across seasonal ranges. Highpriority fences — especially within a migration corridor — may be targeted for removal or modification as needed.
Thoughtful fencing choices helps wildlife and people
Some foresight and planning can reduce wildlife conflicts before they result in death or injury. If a homeowners association requires decorative fencing, this is a great opportunity to lead by example. Perhaps you can be your area's wildlife champion to educate your neighbors and the HOA about fence options that are both attractive and friendly to wildlife.

Sealing the Deal: Ag Fence Maintenance at the Stoney Ridge Farm
CASE STUDY FROM WOOD DEFENDER, STONEY RIDGE FARMER, AND CLASSIC STAIN AND SEAL
When it comes to agricultural fencing, durability isn’t just a preference—it’s essential. At Stoney Ridge Farm in the foothills of North Carolina, Josh Draper (known to nearly half a million YouTube subscribers as Stoney Ridge Farmer) recently refreshed his four-board wood fence with help from two trusted partners: Wood Defender and Classic Stain and Seal. The Stoney project showcased how community, expertise, and quality products can solve a familiar challenge for farmers and landowners: keeping a wooden ag fence looking good and standing strong year after year.
Fence professionals know ag fences endure some of the harshest condition – sun, rain, wind, and livestock all take their toll. For contractors, staining isn’t just an upsell, it’s a crucial part of long-term fence preservation and customer satisfaction.
Fence News spoke with Josh, Roy Branch from Wood Defender, and Buddy Smith from Classic Stain and Seal about the project and the importance of fence maintenance. Their insights offer valuable takeaways for pros looking to boost durability, efficiency, and business opportunities in ag fencing.
Q: Josh, you’ve used Wood Defender before—why re-stain now?
Josh (Stoney Ridge Farmer): We first stained this fence about three and a half years ago, and it’s held up great—no peeling, cracking, or flaking. Honestly, it could’ve lasted another year or two, but we wanted to refresh it to keep it looking sharp and extend its life. I built this fence myself—don’t judge the wobble!—but the stain has kept it strong. After seeing how well it held up, bringing Wood Defender back was a no-brainer.
Roy : This is exactly what we aim for. Our semi-transparent stain has a three-year warranty, but here we are well over three years, and it was still protecting well. A fresh coat now just extends that protection for several more years.
Q: Roy, what’s the secret behind Wood Defender’s staying power?
Roy: Wood Defender is an oil-based, penetrating stain that soaks deep to protect from within. It’s designed for exterior wood like farm fences, and while the semi-transparent formula is guaranteed for three years, we often see it holding strong for five or six, depending on climate. It also prevents mold, mildew, and fading, and it self-levels to avoid lap marks—even with a basic pump sprayer.
Q: Buddy, what do you want ag property owners to know about staining?
Buddy: Staining is about more than looks—it’s about protection. Ag fences endure harsh conditions, and untreated wood deteriorates faster than people realize. Stain acts like a shield, preventing rot and cracks and adding years to a fence’s life. Maintenance isn’t as daunting as it sounds. Highquality products like Wood Defender make it simple, whether you spray, brush, or roll. For large properties, hiring a pro ensures even application and saves time. Staying proactive with maintenance protects your investment and keeps your property looking sharp.
Q: What’s the application process like for a big ag fence?
Josh: We had about 1,000 feet of fence, and with Buddy’s crew and the right tools, we finished in about four and a half hours. The semi-transparent black stain really made the fence pop—it’s awesome seeing that rich color again.
Roy: Proper coverage is key. For a fence like this, you need about five gallons per 100 feet – both sides, including posts. It’s water-resistant within 24 hours.
Q: Why choose a professionally manufactured stain?
Josh: A lot of people around here used to slap on burnt motor oil, but that’s not best practice. Wood Defender is made specifically to preserve wood— and it works.
Q: Any advice for ag fence owners?
Buddy: If your fence is bare or hasn’t been treated in a while, get a pro to assess it. A good stain job extends its life and keeps your property looking sharp. Once you’re on a maintenance schedule, it’s easy to keep up. A little effort every few years saves money and hassle in the long run.
Josh: Absolutely. This fence is a key part of the farm’s curb appeal and functionality. Wood Defender checks all the boxes—it’s easy for DIYers on small projects, but for big jobs, having a pro like Buddy makes a world of difference.
Q: Buddy, how do you approach ag fence staining?
Buddy: It’s all about durability and efficiency. These customers focus on utility, but when you explain how stain prevents rot, mold, and failure—and saves money long-term—they see the value. Plus, big jobs are profitable and flow smoothly with the right product.

Bluetooth® Post-Mount Keypad
Q: Roy, why is Wood Defender a good fit for pros?
Roy: It’s engineered for pros but easy enough for anyone to use. The oilbased formula penetrates deep, the finish levels beautifully, and it’s rainsafe within hours. That means faster turnarounds and happy clients.
Q: Any tips for pros adding staining to their lineup?
Roy: Saturation is key—apply enough product to soak the wood fully. That’s what gives longevity and prevents lap marks. Also, prep matters. A quick clean to remove dirt and mildew before staining makes a big difference.
Q: Stoney Ridge Farmer, what’s your message to pros?
Josh: I love DIY, and we’ve shown how easy Wood Defender is to apply even with basic sprayers. But for large ag projects, it’s worth calling in the pros. Fence contractors who offer staining aren’t just installing fences—they’re protecting them for the long haul. My fence would’ve looked rough by now without that first stain. The added life is real.
Q: Why should staining be part of every contractor’s service mix?
Buddy: It adds value for customers and opens new revenue streams. Once a customer sees the results, they’ll keep coming back—not just for installs but for ongoing maintenance.
Roy: And with Wood Defender, you know you’re delivering quality. Fences are an investment, and our job is to help your customers protect that investment.
Watch the full re-stain process on the Stoney Ridge Farmer YouTube channel for an up-close look at Wood Defender in action—and how a pro like Classic Stain and Seal gets the job done.

Smart Solutions FOR EVERY ACRE: Trident Fence Serves the Evolving Needs of Agricultural, Wildlife, and Pet Containment
Fencing is no longer one-size-fits-all—especially when it comes to protecting what matters most in agricultural and rural environments. Whether it's keeping livestock in, keeping predators out or ensuring pets stay safe at home, today’s containment challenges demand smarter, more adaptable solutions. That growing complexity has shaped the way Trident Fence supports today’s fence professionals.
As a wholesale supplier with decades of experience in agricultural fencing, Trident Fence offers professionals a complete lineup of containment solutions. From traditional perimeter fencing to specialized enclosures for pets, Trident Fence and trusted retail brands—DeerBusters and Easy Pet Fence—make it easier for contractors, installers, and property owners to get the job done right, no matter the terrain, species, or setting.
Agricultural Needs Are Evolving—And So Are We
The modern rural property owner may be a large-scale farmer, a backyard chicken keeper, or a hobby homesteader. Their needs vary, but they all want durable, cost-effective fencing that performs.
“We work with contractors serving all kinds of properties—people raising livestock, managing crops, or just looking for safe, secure boundaries,” says George Horetsky, senior sales representative for Trident Fence. “They need fencing that can handle pressure from animals, harsh weather and all types of terrain. That’s exactly what we provide.”
Trident Fence supplies a wide range of steel hex mesh, welded wire and polypropylene mesh fencing for a variety of agricultural applications, from protecting crops and vineyards to enclosing livestock and creating secure boundaries. These products are designed to withstand the elements, resist animal pressure and hold up over time, even in remote areas.
And while traditional agricultural fencing remains a cornerstone of the business, many customers are now homeowners looking for more targeted solutions and something they can do themselves.
Wildlife Pressure? DeerBusters Has You Covered.
Wildlife fencing isn’t just about deer anymore. Today’s homeowners are battling groundhogs, raccoons, rabbits and even birds. Whether protecting their favorite apple trees, their award-winning roses or gardens, DeerBusters offers the wildlife control solutions needed to preserve yields and deter damage.
High-strength deer fencing kits are available in metal and poly mesh options, with heights up to 8 feet. Ground stakes, access gates and extender systems to meet site-specific needs are also available. With over 40 years in the industry, DeerBusters has become a go-to for professional growers, landscapers and conservationists.
“We’ve seen a big increase in demand for deer and wildlife control fencing,” Horetsky says. “Our DeerBusters products are easy to work with for homeowners and can be installed quickly. They’re built to perform, but they also preserve the natural look of a property.”
Pet Fencing Is a Growing Market
For rural homeowners and hobby farmers, pets are family—and fencing for their safety is now a priority. That’s where Easy Pet Fence (EPF) meets the need. This brand is dedicated to non-electric containment systems for dogs, cats, and even backyard chickens.
Designed for DIYers and professionals alike, EPF kits blend seamlessly into the environment and include chew-resistant mesh, dig guards, and optional cat toppers for climbers. And since they require no concrete or permanent footers, they're ideal for properties with tricky terrain or evolving use cases.
“Pet owners want safe spaces where their animals can roam, but they don’t want to sacrifice the view or spend a fortune,” says Horetsky. “Easy Pet Fence is a great solution for those customers—especially in open areas where traditional fences don’t make sense.”
The pet product space is ever-growing with rising consumer demand, and professional installers are looking to diversify their services to include pet fencing. With the support of Trident Fence, these products are an excellent fit, especially in regions where large, open properties mean traditional fencing is impractical or cost-prohibitive.
Why Contractors Work with Trident Fence
As a wholesale supplier, Trident Fence supports contractors with dependable materials and straightforward service offering:
• A steady inventory of mesh rolls, posts, gates, and accessories
• Bulk pricing and volume discounts
• Practical guidance based on real-world applications

Maximize Your Fence Line Efficiency WITH EZG'S FARM
FENCE EQUIPMENT: STRETCH-N-GO AND FENCE HOG
For agricultural fencing projects requiring efficiency, durability, and ease of use, EZG Manufacturing offers innovative solutions, including the Stretch-N-Go Wire Tensioner® and the Fence Hog® Chain Link Dispenser. These tools deliver significant time savings and operational efficiency to farmers and ranchers.
"Whether you’re working a few acres of a small, family-owned farm, or running a large-scale enterprise, fencing plays a crucial role in safeguarding crops by providing a reliable barrier against wildlife and unauthorized access. At EZG, our goal is to empower farmers with reliable, user-friendly fencing equipment that enhances productivity and durability," says Matt Schott, EZG business development manager. "The Stretch-N-Go and Fence Hog exemplify this commitment by optimizing installation processes and ensuring long-lasting, secure fence lines."
The Stretch-N-Go: Simplifying Wire Installation and Tensioning
The Stretch-N-Go is specifically designed to streamline the process of wire fence tensioning. It simultaneously stretches and installs barbed or woven fencing with minimal physical effort. The dispenser is capable of stretching up to 1/4 mile, or the equivalent of two 660' rolls or four 330' rolls, of woven wire without reloading.
Its user-friendly design allows operators to adjust tension settings quickly, accommodating various fencing needs from livestock enclosures to perimeter security, explains Schott. The woven wire is stretched while guiding the Stretch-N-Go via skid-steer. The wire is held upright and taut against the posts while a person walks behind and secures the fence. Coated tension rolls protect wire during stretching while an adjustable brake system provides tension options. If the application calls for barbed wire, the Sretch-N-Go easily adapts with the optional barbwire tree attachment to handle up to 6 strands of wore simultaneously.
This equipment also saves on manpower. The Stretch-N-Go only requires two operators for fence installation and can even be operated by one person if needed. Pockets are built into the Stretch-N-Go for forklift access. 4-foot or 6-foot height models are available.
It's a tool that enhances productivity without sacrificing quality. Schott says their customers appreciate its reliability and ease of operation. “The StretchN-Go has transformed how farmers and contractors approach wire fence installation tasks. It offers unmatched efficiency and precision, significantly reducing installation time and ensuring consistent, tight wire tension across fences.”
The Fence Hog: Streamlining Chain Link Installation
Developed with the assistance of professional fence builders, with a design that has been refined over the past 22 years, the Fence Hog Chain Link Dispenser is engineered for versatility and performance in agricultural settings handling traditional chain link or woven wire fencing with ease.
“We initially developed this Fence Hog to satisfy customer requests for a machine that picks up and dispenses cumbersome rolls of chain link fabric easily,” says Schott. “This machine does just that, significantly reducing manual labor and speeding up installation times. Farmers and contractors rely on the Fence Hog for its ability to dispense and stretch chain link fabric with unparalleled efficiency."
The Fence Hog is designed to attach easily to skid steers or tractors, allowing operators to maneuver effortlessly across varied terrain while maintaining precise control over fence fabric tension. Powered by the hydraulics used with the skid-steer loader, the uniquely designed cage mechanism opens and tilts to retrieve the fence roll from the ground.
The innovative design accommodates various fence heights and configurations, offering flexibility to meet diverse agricultural fencing needs. Its built-in features, such as adjustable tension controls and smooth dispensing mechanisms, ensure consistent and professional-grade fence installations every time.
Three models are available depending on your needs and project scale. The Fence Hog comes in 36" and 24" models, and the Mini Fence Hog, a compact version. Attachments and accessories are also available to fine-tune any project.
Both the Stretch-N-Go and the Fence Hog offer tangible benefits that resonate throughout agricultural operations. “We stand behind all of our products with a commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction,” adds Schott. CASE STUDY: Bridging the Gap for Pet Security
Overview
Last fall, the team at Log Cabin Fence embarked on a distinctive pet fencing project in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, an affluent neighborhood of Pittsburgh that is home to the Pittsburgh Penguins and Pittsburgh Steelers professional sports franchises. The challenge? Installing a dog fence that required building a bridge across a stream and around the property acreage, integrating both functional and aesthetic considerations.
Engineering the Bridge
The project began with the procurement of a robust 35-foot, 5000-pound bridge from a Texas-based supplier, rated to handle up to 16,000 pounds. Upon delivery to Log Cabin Fence’s facility in Amity, Pennsylvania, the crew meticulously prepared for installation. The groundwork was laid by excavating topsoil, compacting gravel, and strategically positioning 8 x 8 x 10-foot timbers as foundational support on either side of the stream. Using specialized equipment, including a Telehandler, the team carefully maneuvered the bridge into place, ensuring precise alignment over the prepared timbers. Next, the bridge was secured with 6-inch diameter, 8-foot long American Timber and Steel wood posts, driven 6 feet into the ground and strategically anchored to prevent any potential movement.
Fencing Installation
Currently underway in phase two, Log Cabin Fence is driving Black SS 40 Pipe at 10 to 20-foot intervals on the opposite side of the stream. This phase will support the installation of 20966 Black Bekaert woven wire, creating a robust 7-foot-high enclosure. A strategic measure includes laying one foot of wire on the ground to prevent dogs from digging beneath the fence, ensuring containment and safety.
Custom Gate Fabrication
Adjacent to the client's home, Log Cabin Fence customfabricated a steel gate using cattle panels and square metal tubing. Enhancing both functionality and aesthetics, the gate was adorned with treated poplar boards in a crossbuck style. It is set to be installed on two 6-inch diameter, 12-foot Wooden American Timber posts, driven 4 feet into the ground and capped with a horizontal 6-inch diameter, 10-foot post—all treated with Stain & Seal Experts' black stain for durability and visual appeal.
Result
The meticulous planning and execution not only ensure the security and functionality of the dog enclosure but also enhances the property's overall aesthetic and value.

A New Type OF PLASTIC DEER FENCE
Introducing Bitterfence® from Critterfence®
Plastic deer fencing, also known as poly (which is short for polypropylene), is strong lightweight and inexpensive. It’s the most popular deer fencing variant on the market for deer exclusion or deer containment. It’s available in different strengths ranging from lowstrength bird netting type fencing found in big box stores, to heavier 1100 to 1400 pound per square foot breaking strength deer and elk fence available through Critterfence and other sources.
When it comes to deer fencing, Doug O'Connor, general manager of Critterfence, says poly offers specific advantages. It requires fewer posts per linear foot than metal fence. It can also be suspended from trees using monofilament tension cable. “Monofilament tension cable with the poly fence attached to it has some stretch to it which allows for tree movement in winds and growth over time” explains Korfel. “Metal fence on trees isn’t a good idea unless furring strips are used between the tree bark and the fence, otherwise the fence will grow into the trees over time, damaging the fence and possibly the tree.”
O'Connor says the disadvantage to poly, until now, has been its vulnerability to chewing animals. Deer don’t chew; but other animals like rabbits, groundhogs, foxes and coyotes do. They create small openings in the fence base that eventually can allow deer to enter and eat everything. He offers three possible solutions:
• Use all-metal fence (requires closer post spacing, is heavier and more expensive)
• Layer what’s referred to as a “rodent barrier” or “chew barrier,” which is usually a 1x1 or smaller opening size wire fence attached to an already installed poly fence (more expensive and takes more time to install)
• Install the new patent pending Bitterfence poly fence mesh, exclusive to Critterfence, as a chew deterrent.
“Bitterfence blends traditional plastic fence with EPA registered additives to prevent damage from chewing animals,” explains O'Connor. “These additives are captured in the polymer itself to protect the fence from chewing."
Bitterfence poly fence rolls also include a patented graduated reinforced bottom base (US patent #1D1,027,219) to help secure the bottom of the fence. Bitterfence is available with multiple opening sizes in 100-feet lengths and 330-feet lengths:
• 2-inch opening size: 700, 800, 1100 and 1400 strength
• 1-inch opening size: 650 and 1050 strength
• ½-inch opening size:600 strength
Critterfence brand poly fence is available in all sizes and types, with and without the Bitterfence additive. These fence rolls are available at Critterfence. com, other websites and other online marketplaces.

Ken Ewing
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER
BULL BARN FENCE FACTORY with
As the Business Development Manager at Bull Barn Fence Factory, a Pennsylvania-based manufacturer specializing in galvanized woven wire fencing, Ken Ewing has had a seat at the frontline of the company’s early years – both challenges and successes. Fence News visited with Ken about his path from music teacher to the fence industry and insight he’s gained along the way.
Where are you from and what is your background?
For five generations, my family has lived on our family farm in the little village of Torrance in Western Pennsylvania. I live here with my wife, Chrissy, and our three daughters Bela, Kasia, and Hulena. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in music education and was very close to completing a masters in curriculum and instruction before my career change.
How did you go from teaching music to working in the fence industry?
My career in the fence industry started a little differently than most. I was a music teacher for 18 years. Most of that time was spent as a high school band director but I had taught the last few years of that time in the elementary school as well. Teaching during covid was a terrible experience. Not only that, but I saw things happening in that profession that I just couldn’t see myself being a part of anymore. You could say that I just walked away from that life and into a new one on a whim.
John McConnell started Bull Barn in the spring of 2020 and it was September 2021 when I jumped in. The day I left teaching I walked into the factory still wearing a tie and everything. I’ll never forget, John’s wife, Lori, was at the front desk. I walked in and said, “Can I talk to John? I promise I’m not a salesman.” I guess the joke’s on me because I’ve been a salesman ever since then! It’s been quite a lifestyle switch. I’ve had to adjust from singing and dancing with kindergarteners every day, to travelling the country learning how to grow an ag fence company. Lots of lessons along the way for sure.
Oddly enough, I don’t even perform anymore as a musician. There’s plenty of other excitement in my life now. This industry has opened a whole new world that I never thought possible.
The best thing John ever did for me was to make me operate a fence loom at first. We still didn’t have all the new state-of-the-art machines back then, so I got put in charge of old #85. Keeping it running properly was probably the hardest job I’ve ever had to do. I came home at 2 a.m. so many nights just wondering what in the world I was doing. Our production manager, Bob Dempsey, really took me under his wing though and I owe him a lot. I had known him as our local game warden prior to Bull Barn, and I had no idea how great of a mechanic he was. I can’t overemphasize just how much we all were learning back then. Every day was a new learning experience. Lots of impossible challenges, bloody knuckles and, quite honestly, devastating failures. Those of us who were there at the beginning can absolutely look back with pride at what we’ve accomplished. It truly is what makes Bull Barn special. Those machines have humbled every one of us and it’s created a team that I’d put up against any other.
Did anything in your teaching career prepare you for your current role?
It did without a doubt. I truly did go to school every day with the thought that I had the opportunity to help someone. A lot of my students still keep in touch and tell me I did just that. I don’t see myself as a salesman and I probably never will. The industry needs our woven wire products, and I see it as my job to
make sure that everyone gets the best service possible from Bull Barn if we are lucky enough to serve them. I go into every meeting with the same thought, “How can I help this person?” If I’m not helping our customers grow their business as well, then what’s the point?
Bull Barn is relatively young. What has that growth path been like?
Well, John will tell you this all started as a little retirement project for him after he retired from an already prestigious career in the fence industry. We all know he doesn’t do anything halfway though.
I also have to mention our parent company, Southern Wire, from Perth in Western Australia as well. Jerry Sivewright and his amazing team over there have really played a major role in making this all happen for us. Many of those guys have spent countless hours over here, sharing their decades of knowledge with us. I’ve had the opportunity to work at the Australian factory too, where every member of their sales team has personally spent time helping me learn from their success. I find myself using little pieces of their sales strategies every single day. We are constantly in touch with Perth, and their experience has shortened our learning curve immensely.
What is the scope of your position, what do you routinely handle for the company?
As the business development manager, I grow the company and spread the word about Bull Barn. That sounds simple, but I have to keep a lot of plates spinning at all times. Bull Barn is very well
known in the eastern half of the US now, but we have quite a presence out west as well. I’ve been given a lot of freedom in how I go about my job, and I do believe that has served us well. Many of our dealers and contractors have become very close friends of mine and I think that’s what I love the most about this career. I don’t like being in the office for too long at a stretch. I guess everyone is different, but I do make it a point to get out on the road and visit every customer as much as possible. Quite a few have told me that makes a huge difference to them, so I’ll keep doing it. I’m grateful for all of our customers and I don’t want them to forget it.
What have been some of your biggest challenges and biggest wins, both as a company and in your position?
Our biggest wins, ironically, are also our biggest challenges. Bull Barn has always been about sustainable growth, but the ag fence side of the industry is just exploding right now. The growing pains are very real. There are only 24 hours in the day, and our looms never stop running. As the business development manager, I will say it’s very tough juggling all of the new customers and lead times, but we’re getting very good at that. Communication is key, and our customers all have my number. They know I’m always available, no matter where I am in the world.
What do you feel sets your company apart from others?
That’s an easy one. Western Pennsylvania has always been known for its work ethic, and we have heaps of it at Bull Barn. The factory guys
are incredibly passionate about making the highest quality woven wire possible, and they're good at turning it out fast too. As far as the sales office goes, we are 100% dedicated to giving our customers the best service possible. In the rare case that there is an issue, I will be on the next flight out to solve it. Our motto is “Your Fencing Partner,” and we truly do see it that way.
What do you enjoy most about your job and working in this industry?
The friendships I’ve made along the way are what keeps me going. Ag fence guys are a special breed, no matter what part of the world they’re from. I’ve learned a lot from all of them, and I owe those guys a mention as well. What an awesome community it is. They never stop innovating and testing and educating each other.
Did you have a business mentor who helped inspire you?
John McConnell, without a doubt. He’s the reason I came to Bull Barn. They broke the mold after him. I’m going to just go ahead and out his age here. He’s 69 years young and I’ll never be able to keep up with him. He once told me that you must be willing to put in the work, a sentiment I’ve heard echoed from quite a few successful business owners now. On any given day at Bull Barn, you might find him at his desk on the phone. However, you’re much more likely to find him in the yard loading trucks or under a machine. Sometimes, I swear he’s in two or three places all at once. He just doesn’t quit and that is the absolute secret to our success. We won’t be outworked by anyone.
How do you stay motivated every day? Well, I do this primarily for my wife and daughters at home, which I’m sure isn’t a surprise. Chrissy has spent countless nights alone and our girls, who used to come to school with me every day, sometimes have to do without their dad. They’re a little older now, so it makes it easier, I hope. The guys at the factory keep me going every bit as much though. Bull Barn is a major opportunity for us all and I love leading the charge for these guys to help grow it. They are some of the best people I’ve ever worked with.
What advice would you give someone just entering this industry?
Work hard, but don’t lose track of why you’re doing it. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of this industry and become totally absorbed by it. Stay humble and never stop learning.

EZG Introduces New Compact Equipment Options
EZG Manufacturing, a leader in the masonry and construction equipment industry, has unveiled two new additions to their equipment lines: the Mini Cement Hog® FCH25 and the Mini Barbwire Hog® WB-BWH. These introductions continue EZG’s legacy of innovation and commitment to providing top-quality equipment designed to meet the unique challenges of professionals in the construction and fencing industries.
The Mini Cement Hog FCH25: The Latest Addition to the Cement Hog Lineup
Designed for compact, maneuverable operations without sacrificing performance, the Mini Cement Hog FCH25 is the latest addition to the Cement Hog line of mobile dispensers. The FCH25 is the ideal solution for contractors working in tight spaces that require heavy-duty material handling.
Building on the success of the FCH50 and FCH100 models, the FCH25 offers a ¼ cubic yard capacity, making it perfect for walkbehind equipment. Whether working with wet or dry material, including dry sand, the Mini Cement Hog FCH25 ensures efficient material delivery and is easy to operate and transport. This model is specifically engineered to work with mini skid-
steers like the Bobcat MT100, making it a great choice for contractors needing a compact yet powerful tool.
The FCH25 features:
¼ cubic yard capacity for optimal performance in tight spaces
Quick, efficient material delivery for fast, on-the-job operation
Easy to operate and transport, ideal for smaller job sites
Hooks to auxiliary hydraulics for optimal material flow (up to 1-inch
Designed for fence contractors who need efficient material handling with minimal space
The compact design of the FCH25 (61.25" length, 29" width, 26.5" height) allows it to access hard-to-reach areas, while its 390 lbs empty weight (approx. 1300 lbs gross) ensures easy maneuverability and transport. The auger diameter of 4.875" and tube diameter of 7" provide excellent material handling capacity, ensuring reliable operation on any job site.
"The Mini Cement Hog FCH25 is a game-changer for contractors who need a compact yet reliable solution for material handling,” says Matt Schott, fence equipment sales representative at EZG Manufacturing. “It’s perfect for mini skid-steer users and offers all the functionality contractors need while fitting into smaller spaces. We're thrilled to offer a product that meets the growing demand for smaller, more efficient equipment.”
Shawn Cox, CEO of Shawn's Fencing in Wichita, Kansas, has seen firsthand the benefits of the new Mini Cement Hog. “I used a ½ yard version of the Fencer’s Cement Hog for a few years and have recently purchased a Bobcat MT100. I was looking for a version of the Cement Hog that could connect to the MT100, so I contacted EZ Manufacturing, and Matt told me they
were making a version to connect to mini skid-steers. I told him to sign me up! Having the ¼ yard version allows me to get around very tight spots on pipeline jobs where you can’t get a full-size skid steer. It keeps my weight down for transporting my machine and equipment under 26,000 pounds. My crew loves it, and we’re excited to have it for many years to come.”
To learn more about the new FCH25 visit: ezgmfg.com/product/fencers-cement-hog/.
The Mini Barbwire Hog Power and Precision in a Compact Design
Designed for efficiency in tight spaces, the walk-behind Mini Barbwire Hog® WB-BWH offers contractors a compact solution with heavy-duty performance capabilities. This new model delivers the same reliability and capacity as the standard Barbwire Hog in a more maneuverable, space-efficient design. Like the full-size model, it is specifically engineered for the installation of strand barbed wire atop chain link fences, enhancing security for both residential and commercial applications. The Mini Barbwire Hog is perfect for 8-foot or standard-height fence installations, providing flexibility for a variety of job sizes. The Mini Barbwire Hog WB-BWH can dispense up to three rolls of barbed wire simultaneously, just like the full-size model, with the added benefit of a pivoting arm that allows dispensing from either side of the fence. With its compact dimensions of 61” wide, 32” deep, and 89” high, and a weight of 604 lbs, it is easy to transport and operate on-site. The machine has the same load capacity as the standard Barbwire Hog, handling up to three 16” rolls of barbed wire, totaling 1320 ft.
The need for a smaller, more compact machine was recognized by contractors like Cole Patterson, owner of High Pointe Companies LLC, who saw the benefit of a walk-behind model for smaller jobs. “We have full-size skids and the full-size Barbwire Hog, but we don’t always need the big skids on jobs. Our mini skids are used every day, and being able to unroll barbed wire without taking a large skid is huge for us. Even on shorter jobs, like 100 feet of fence, the Mini Barbwire Hog outperforms doing it by hand, saving us a lot of time,” says Patterson.
According to Matt Schott, EZG sales representative, “The Mini Barbwire Hog WB-BWH meets a critical need in the market for versatile, space-efficient equipment. It’s ideal for contractors who demand both performance and maneuverability without the bulk of a full-size unit. This model opens up new possibilities for smaller job sites while still providing the same heavy-duty performance our customers expect from EZG.”
The launch of the Mini Barbwire Hog WB-BWH highlights EZG Manufacturing’s commitment to innovation and addressing the needs of professionals in a variety of construction sectors.

Maximize Drill Performance: Augers,
Points & Blades Wear
Operators sometimes forget that points and blades need regular maintenance just like an earth drill does. Too often, these small pieces are forgotten in the day-to-day shuffle of drilling projects. However, forgoing routine maintenance on these critical parts can lead to a decline in drilling performance or even a complete breakdown on the jobsite.
“Proper maintenance and replacement of common wear parts keeps an earth auger operating at peak performance,” says Joe Haynes, president of Litle Beaver, Inc. “Like the drills they are mounted on, augers, points and blades require routine maintenance.”
Little shares these steps for maximizing drill performance:
• Check the placement of the points and blades every day. Misalignment might cause the auger to vibrate excessively or “walk” during use.
• Use the right points and blades for the soil. Standard options work for loamy soils or areas with few rocks while hard clay or frozen ground requires carbide blades. Having the right points and blades will protect the auger from damage and make drilling projects easier.
• Replace worn attachable points and blades before they reach the auger flighting. Operators can replace these parts quickly with basic hand tools, such as a wrench or ratchet set.
• If the blades wear down far enough to damage the flighting, operators will need to repair the auger flighting by welding the material or replace the entire auger.
Issues
• A good rule of thumb is to never operate a drill with damaged or missing parts, which includes the auger.
Haynes adds that some earth augers feature abrasive-resistant steel and hard surfacing on the edges of the points and blades and advises looking for a manufacturer that offers points and blades that are reversible, which means operators get twice as much work out of one point or blade.
“The time put into maintaining smaller wear parts protects against larger repair costs if the drill is damaged or breaks,” he says. “Keep an eye on maintenance schedules to prolong the life of earth drills.”
Little Beaver offers a full line of easy-to-operate equipment, along with a complete offering of accessories, including augers, extensions, points and blades, Little Beaver effectively serves the needs of end-users from professional contractors to rental centers.

Tariffs Increase Demand for In-House Fabrication
In the past, producing fence components in-house was often done for flexibility and to avoid supply chain delays. Today, with the uncertainty regarding tariffs, this has become a far more urgent issue to avoid delivery delays and control costs.
Larry Siegal, sales manager for Vogel Tool & Die, explains that Vogel has seen a trend for fencers to bring as much manufacturing in-house to help better control the process. “Reducing jobs lost because of long lead times and the flexibility to build as needed can reap significant benefits."
Siegal says Vogel Tool & Die has long been an industry partner helping fence companies throughout the U.S. achieve these goals. Their compact 120V hydraulic press is a bench-top workhorse, essentially creating a manufacturing cell within a very limited footprint (the press is less than two feet wide). Besides pipe notching, used for gates and panels, this press also can power a variety of tools used to create metal picket panels.
Vogel’s family of picket forming tools uses the same technology, to flatten square tubing and trim into the classic spear shape in one stroke. This reduces handling and insures a tight, square top, unlike processes that flatten, then require a separate process to trim into the final shape.
Standard tools can produce a sharp picket typically used for high security applications. The far more popular radius tip design is used nationwide and is instantly recognizable.
Tools can accept 16-gauge or thinner steel, 14-gauge or thinner aluminum. Tools are ordered for a specific tube size, ½-inch is the minimum, 1-inch is the maximum, with a clever design only requiring swapping two internal components to change the size the tool can process. Siegal says while square tubing is practically universal, Vogel’s picket forming tool can also produce pickets from round tubing.
Over the years, Vogel has added even more options, such as custom shapes, notches and cut outs and even piercing the picket with changeable designs. With companion tools that also fit the Vogel press, fence companies can cut the raw square tubing to the required length, pierce square tubing or channel for the rails, notch the ends to mate with an upright and more.
“Vogel has served the industry for over 90 years and its tools have always been made in America,” adds Siegal. “With Vogel’s tools, fence companies can be making their fence panels in America – right in a corner of their own shops.”
Efficiency and safety are paramount in the world of fence installation. “Fence installers are constantly seeking ways to save time and reduce labor costs while staying competitive in bids," says Ron Chouinard, owner of L&C Enterprises-USA. “Traditional tension wire installation methods are laborintensive and prone to complications, including worker injuries.”
Enter the Tension Wire Dispenser from L&C, a game-changer in the industry, according to Chouinard. Designed to hook up easily to vehicles or machinery like tractors and skid steers, this dispenser accelerates installation processes while ensuring a safe working environment. "The dispenser allows for quicker installation, reduces labor needs, and enhances bid competitiveness," he explains. "This translates to improved margins, higher job profitability, and increased job opportunities."
The dispenser accommodates fence heights from 6 to 12 feet and features adjustable unwind tension for precise installation speeds. It supports both left and right-side dispensing and is ideal for commercial installations, offering secure and consistent dispensing of tension wire. Built tough for durability in harsh conditions, it is primed and painted to withstand abuse over its long service life.
Developed in Northern Michigan by industry experts, the dispenser excels in demanding climates and high-security environments. "It's a safe, fast, and effective solution for enhancing chain link fence fabric and is especially crucial in areas prioritizing security," Chouinard adds.
Tailored for applications in solar and wind farms, airports, and governmental buildings, the dispenser, paired with L&C's Tension Wire Ties and Barbed Wire Dispenser, ensures tamper-proof security. Each dispenser is backed by a one-year warranty covering craftsmanship and materials, underscoring L&C's commitment to quality and customer satisfaction.

"Hole" Lot A to Think About
Not all jobsites are the same and not all hole diggers are created equal for the task at hand. “Making the right equipment choice depends on a set of variables that may not necessarily be taken into consideration,” says Jan Wienczkowski, marketing manager with General Equipment Company. “Your choice, in the end, will impact your productivity in a positive or negative fashion. There are multiple types of equipment and accessories available.”
He and the team of professionals at General Equipment Company provide some guidelines for factors to consider when selecting a hole digger:
Jobsite Impact
Soil conditions and dig location preparation are a starting point and can vary throughout the site. Will you be dealing with soft sand or loam, soft or compacted clay, rubble, caliche, sandstone, fractured limestone, fracturable sandstone and limestone, hardpan or frozen ground? Is the soil wet or dry? Is the dig location covered in heavy grass or weeds?
"Most holes 30 inches to five feet deep will take about 30 seconds to dig in moderate density soil if you have the right powerhead/source and auger selected to match soil conditions,” explains Wienczkowski. “As you move into more difficult soil types it can take longer. However, if you have not removed grass and weeds, as an example, the boring head can clog preventing auger penetration." Worn or broken teeth or screw bits can substantially increase digging times. How substantial? Their team has fielded calls where contractors have been attempting to dig a hole for 10 minutes and had barely broken the ground.
Dig Applications
Soil conditions coupled with the project will ultimately drive the final machine required. The torque required to dig a hole of a specific diameter and depth is directly proportional to the resistance generated by the soil. Softer soil, such as sandy loam, requires less torque than harder soil types, such as hard pan and caliche. Both soil types can be very difficult, if not impossible, to penetrate during periods of low moisture.
Depending on soil conditions, increasing the
auger diameter will increase the digging torque. As a result, many power sources may not be able to generate the necessary torque or, in the case of hydraulic digging attachments, the necessary operating system pressure. To counter this, decreasing the digging rate of the auger to align with the power source capacity can help. Another option is choosing a machine with increased horsepower or a sufficient hydraulic auxiliary power system operating capacity.
Hole Digger Selection
Generally, one-man gas-powered hole diggers are good for smaller fencing, decks, landscaping and other similar projects in loam, sand and soft clay or soil with granular rubble using auger diameters up to eight inches and depths of 45 inches. Two-man units can handle larger fence, deck, landscaping and sign installation projects in the same soil as one-man units, but the extra power and control opens up working in tougher materials such as sandstone, fractured limestones, caliche, compacted clays and rubble soil. These can also drive auger diameters up to 18 inches and depths of 51 inches, and deeper, depending on auger extensions used.
When more horsepower, torque and digging stability is required than what a two-man unit can provide, towable units can be the answer for similar projects where soil conditions are tougher and potentially more holes need to be dug.
Hydraulic hole digger attachments come in a variety of sizes. Smaller units can be mounted on power sources such as compact track loaders and
mini excavators handling auger diameters up to 36 inches and minimum depths of 72 inches with extensions. Project and soil type capabilities of attachments are similar to towable units. Larger hydraulic attachments handle the previous soils mentioned, but also fracturable sandstone and limestone, hardpan and frozen ground.
Blades & Teeth
Most augers used with one-man hole diggers come equipped with blades rather than teeth. In general, blades are best suited for unconsolidated soils such as loams, sands, soft clays and granular rubble. Auger teeth, on the other hand, can handle these and tougher soil classifications, depending on the type installed.
Teeth are designed to break up the soil so the boring head and flighting can then efficiently lift the soil out of the hole, but not all teeth are meant to be used everywhere. Dirt teeth and tungsten carbide can be used in all auger socket positions; however, chisel-type teeth should only be used in the innermost position closest to the auger axle.
• Standard & Hard-faced Dirt Tooth: A standard dirt tooth is designed for use in all unconsolidated soil types, such as loams and sands, as well as consolidated sandstone or caliche.
• Chisel Type & Chisel Type with Tungsten Carbide: This tooth looks like a bear claw and is designed to penetrate and rip through tough caliche, hardpan and other formations.
• Tungsten Carbide: Tungsten carbide teeth are highly durable, and they’re recommended for

- Jan Wienczkowski, General
use in extremely abrasive conditions and frozen soil. Just don’t use them in rocky soils, which can shatter these teeth.
“Overall, the combination of auger diameter, teeth or blade, screw bit, soil type and down pressure will affect the hole digging rate and your productivity,” says Wienczkowski. “Choosing the right combination can make or break
completing the job on time and whether you will be profitable project after project. Assessing the jobsite and knowing the equipment that will produce the best results safely is critical to your long-term success.”

WATER HOPPERTM: The Water Tank for Fence TrucksTM
Since 2006, Water Hopper™ has provided fence contractors with a convenient method of transporting and distributing water to the job site. Hauling large bulky water barrels can present safety concerns. That’s why C & M Fence Co. designed the Water Hopper as a safe way for their crews to access water without taking up too much room on their flatbed trucks.
The first prototype was built using diamond plate steel. The design was right, but it was very heavy! C & M Fence found the solution for their idea in the rotational mold business where the current plastic tank design was made. The ¼” low-density polyethylene plastic tank holds up to 110 gallons of water. It easily mounts and attaches to the headache rack on flatbed trucks and has spigots on both sides to dispense water. Gravity flow dispenses the water, but a pump can be attached if needed.
While the main design of the Water Hopper has remained the same, significant changes in its features have changed and some customization requests can be met.
The Water Hopper™ is made in the USA by American workers.

Fence Cloud Delivers More Than Expected
“This is more than I expected.”
Julie Shulze, software designer with Fence Cloud, says this is a statement she hears often during Fence Cloud demonstrations with new clients.
In today’s world of generic CRM (customer relationship management) software, Fence Cloud is an unusual tool. “While most CRM platforms cater to several different industries, Fence Cloud is focused on fencing professionals and meeting their needs in a unique way,” Schulze explains. “Our software is designed to speak fence. We understand the intricacies of fencing projects, enabling us to offer unique features like fabrication cut sheets and shop drawings that generate based on precise material breakdowns."
One of Fence Cloud's key innovations is its partnership-driven approach with suppliers and distributors, which ensures seamless integration of estimating calculations across all fencing companies. This collaboration significantly reduces implementation time, simplifies pricing imports, and enhances efficiency in supplier orders. “Rather than making every fence company fend for itself, we partner with suppliers and distributors to provide estimating calculations that are available to all fencing companies,” says Schulze.
Fence Cloud's user-friendly interface allows users to create detailed templates for residential estimates within minutes, automating tasks such as contract creation, labor allocation, and supplier quote customization. This efficiency not only saves time but also enhances customer satisfaction through prompt and accurate service delivery.
For small business owners who manage hectic schedules and high workloads during peak seasons, Fence Cloud offers transformative solutions. Schulze shares a recent new customer meeting experience:
As I hopped into a demo with Mike, he struck me like many small fencing company owners—working way too many hours in the busy season; staying late at the office finishing up quotes; trying to keep everyone moving in the right direction, while also trying to grow his business. He knows what to include in a successful quote, but he has to double-check everyone else’s work. His team is spending way too much time completing everyday tasks, which doesn’t leave a lot of time for exceeding customers’ expectations.
He said he saw a contract from a competitor that included a job sketch, a shop drawing, and the terms all laid out nicely. He wondered how they had the time, then reached out to us.
As I navigated through supplier catalogs and material templates, I could see Mike leaning in, surprised to find that sketches and shop drawings are just the tip of the iceberg. Using company-specific templates, residential estimates can be completed within one minute. Contracts and labor autofill. The scope of work is generated, and customizable supplier quotes are ready to go. Estimates can quickly be duplicated to create multiple versions of a quote to impress residential customers.
Mike was nodding his head as we looked through retail sales and pricing imports. ‘Well,’ he said, ‘this is more than I expected.’
Next, the inevitable question, ‘How much does all of this cost?’ $175 a month for 3 people, and every subscription comes with access to our support team.
Mike is now a Fence Cloud customer.
“We’re continuously evolving to better meet the needs of our customers,” adds Schulze. “It’s the difference between chasing paperwork and building your business—and it’s why pros like Mike are already planning their next big job with Fence Cloud.”

In an early pilot, Fiberon’s New London facility was identified as being in the top 5% of Augury customer sites based on high response rates, IoT (Internet of Things) serviceability, number of active users and quantified wins. It’s this human-side of the technology that is celebrated in the Spotlight Awards.
“It’s not enough to provide an alert just in time. If there’s no one on the other side to take action to repair the machine, we won’t achieve anything,” says Saar Yoskovitz, co-founder and CEO of Augury. “The most impactful industrial AI use cases come to life on the factory floor, but they succeed only when site teams embrace the cultural transformation AI brings. This award celebrates Fiberon’s dedication to its organization and to setting a new standard for advanced manufacturing excellence.”
In addition to machine health and cost savings success, Fiberon’s New London plant also saw tangible impacts in other critical areas like safety, equipment lifespan and team efficiency.

& kerri gregory carell industrial solutions
Those on the outside may think owning and growing a business is glamorous. They see the current building, the staff, the equipment and the profits. What they don’t see are the startups. The small beginnings, the ever-present worry, the dreams and the everyday decisions that can either make it or break it.
Fence News honors those who put their hat in the self-employment ring and built their business one small step at a time.
For over 30 years, Carell Industrial Solutions has been a well-established name in the metal bending machinery industry. The company, which was formed through the merger of Carell Corporation and Eagle Bending Machines, was founded in 1993.
Today, Carell Industrial Solutions is a 30,000 sq.-ft. operation and the exclusive North American distributor for Italian and Turkish lines, including Parmigiani, Memoli, and Comac.
In May 2024, Mike and Kerri Gregory took ownership of Carell Industrial Solutions, bringing a vision centered around three key goals: honoring the company’s legacy, showcasing skilled trades to engage a new generation, and building a lasting future for their children to lead.
Mike and Kerri bring a wealth of business experience to their new roles. Mike, who holds a degree from Mississippi State University, and Kerri, a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi, both had careers in healthcare but were ready for a new challenge.
“For me, it’s a chance to reconnect with my roots,” Mike shares. “My father was a mechanic and fabricator, so I’ve always had a deep appreciation for the manufacturing world. It’s rewarding to know that every machine we sell is part of the process of creating products used across the U.S. and around the world. Our machines almost sell themselves because of their exceptional quality.”
The company’s range of plate and angle rolls, tube and pipe benders, and other fabrication machines are engineered for reliability and long-lasting performance. To meet the growing demand for custom solutions, Carell’s in-house machine shop produces complex tooling, while their sales technicians work closely with customers to ensure they select the right equipment for their needs. An extensive inventory of machines, tooling, and parts are always ready to ship, ensuring fast, reliable support.
“The quality and technology behind the Parmigiani equipment, in particular, is unmatched,” Mike adds. “All our machines are rigorously tested to ensure superior performance in the most demanding environments. Our suppliers are also constantly
incorporating the latest technology to provide machines with cutting-edge electronics.”
Beyond offering top-tier products, Mike and Kerri are focused on cultivating relationships within the industry, from their employees to their customers and dealers.
Kerri has returned to her own roots by organizing companywide meals. Every Wednesday, she and Mike provide breakfast for the staff, and on Fridays, they host a cookout in the company’s transformed warehouse, which is turned into an eatery, complete with fold-out tables, a substantial grill and a large dose of comradery.
“I come from a family of cooks,” Kerri explains. “Feeding people is something my family has always done. It might seem simple, but breaking bread with someone really helps build connections. It’s been a game-changer for morale. Our employees’ spouses and kids come by to join us for meals, and we’ve even had our neighboring businesses stop by for a burger. It’s turned our company culture into something more like a family.”
" The quality and technology behind the Parmigiani equipment, in particular, is unmatched." – Mike Gregory
Mike adds, “We hear from our employees every day about how grateful they are. When people feel part of something, they want to do their best. As a result, we’re growing as a team, and so are our brands and partnerships throughout our supply chain. It’s shaping up to be a strong year for Carell Industrial Solutions.”
Carell Industrial Solutions also strives to strengthen partnerships with customers and dealers by reconnecting face-to-face and offering resources and product education.
“The people who use our machines are the ones who keep the world running. We’ve made a conscious effort to return to in-person communication,” Kerri says. “Our sales technicians have direct access to our suppliers in Italy and Turkey. Being able to tap into the expertise of those who design and build the machines is a huge advantage.”

Management Corner BUILDING AN Age-Inclusive WORKFORCE
The construction industry thrives on experience, skill and teamwork—qualities that seasoned workers bring in abundance. Yet, age discrimination remains an issue in workplaces across many industries, including construction. Whether intentional or unintentional, bias against older workers can lead to missed opportunities, legal risks and the loss of valuable expertise.
Unlike other types of discrimination, ageism is difficult to identify. Employers often use early-retirement plans, restructuring, and downsizing to cull older workers. Once workers hit their late 50s, many start to worry about how their age is perceived and whether they will be passed over for a job or promotion or let go if their company faces cutbacks. In a tighter economy, this problem has become more of an issue. Unemployment among workers 55 and older is consistently higher compared to younger age groups, and data shows that older workers often experience a longer duration of unemployment.
For contractors, ensuring a fair and inclusive work environment isn’t just about compliance with labor laws—it’s about creating a workplace where talent is recognized and respected at any age.
Here’s some steps to help foster an age-inclusive workforce that strengthens contractor teams:
Hire for Skills, Not Stereotypes. When recruiting new employees, focus on skills and experience rather than assumptions about physical ability or adaptability. Avoid job descriptions that use age-biased language such as, “Seeking a young, energetic team player.” During interviews, keep questions job-related and avoid asking about retirement plans or age-related topics. Assess qualifications based on work experience, technical skills and ability to meet job demands.
Provide Equal Training and Development. One common misconception is that older workers resist new technology or struggle to learn new skills. The reality? Many seasoned professionals are eager to stay up to date with industry advancements. Offer ongoing training opportunities for workers of all ages, including digital tools, safety protocols, and new construction techniques.
Prevent Workplace Bias and Harassment. Age-related jokes or negative assumptions—like calling someone “too slow” or “grandpa,” can create a hostile work environment. Employers should establish clear anti-discrimination policies and conduct regular training on workplace inclusion and unconscious bias. Encouraging a culture of respect will help team members value skills and experience over age.
Offer Flexible Work Options. The physical demands of construction can be challenging for some workers as they age, but that doesn’t mean they can’t contribute. Many older employees prefer flexible work arrangements that allow them to continue working while balancing their health and personal life. Consider adjusting job duties to leverage expertise while reducing physical strain (e.g., transitioning to project management, training, or inspections), as well as creating part-time roles or phased retirement plans to keep experienced workers on board longer.
By valuing workers at every stage of their careers, contractors can build a fair, productive, collaborative and legally compliant workplace that benefits everyone.
Authentic Leadership. Building Trust in a Competitive Industry
by Michael Reed executive director, American Fence Association
Imagine you are a newly appointed leader in a rapidly growing fence company. Your owners are pushing for aggressive market expansion, but your team is still adjusting to the changes in leadership. Amid the pressures of growth, you find yourself considering different approaches to influence and impact. On one hand, there is the calculated, winat-all-costs mindset driven by power dynamics. On the other, there is Authentic Leadership—an approach grounded in integrity, values, and most importantly, trust.
Trust as the Foundation of Authentic Leadership
Authentic Leadership is built on a simple yet profound truth: real influence is earned, not manipulated through power dynamics. These tactics often focus on perceptions of control and strategic dominance, while Authentic Leadership is rooted in trust. Trust is developed over time through consistent behavior and commitment to shared values. In the fence industry, where relationships are complex and longstanding, trust isn’t just an ideal, it’s a business necessity.
Trust grows from a leader's ability to demonstrate three critical attributes: Competence, Caring, and Integrity.
Competence
Competence is the demonstration of expertise. Whether you’re an installer or a supplier, competence means understanding project timelines, the materials you’re working with, safety standards, and cost management. When your team sees you can navigate both technical and business challenges, confidence is built. It’s not just about building a fence or manufacturing a product; it’s about solving problems efficiently and delivering excellence.
Caring
Caring means sincere concern for others. Authentic leaders know their team members, understand their challenges, and support their growth. This isn’t just about knowing names; it’s about valuing people as partners in success. For business leaders, caring means valuing customer relationships and investing in employee wellbeing. A leader who creates shared vulnerability
with colleagues fosters loyalty that power-based strategies cannot replicate.
Integrity
Integrity is the consistent alignment of values and actions. It means doing what you say you will do, even when it’s inconvenient. In the fence industry, this might mean owning up to mistakes, sticking to deadlines, or maintaining quality even when margins are tight. When leaders act with integrity, trust deepens, and respect follows.
The Shortcuts vs. The Long Game
It’s easy to be tempted by quick wins and power dynamics. In competitive industries like ours, power games offer tactics for immediate impact—manipulating perception, controlling others, and consolidating influence. But quick victories often come at the cost of trust, and in the end, what is leadership without trust?
Authentic Leadership takes a long time. It understands that sustainable success is built on relationships and results. Trust multiplies over time; it fosters loyalty, reduces turnover, and creates a culture where people go the extra mile—not out of fear, but out of respect.
Choosing Bridges Over Battles
The fence industry can be rough-and-tumble— highly competitive and filled with strong personalities. In heated moments, the instinct to attack can feel natural. But authentic leaders understand the power of building bridges instead of burning them. In the heat of battle, it’s sometimes hard not to strike back, but it’s more important to understand people’s perspectives and seek a common way forward.
In the end, leadership isn’t just about winning projects or dominating markets. It’s about creating a legacy of trust and respect that outlasts any single victory.
What Kind of Leader Do You Want to Be?
The choice is yours. There will be moments when the path of power seems quick and easy, while the path of trust takes patience and persistence. But when the materials come off the line and are delivered to customers, and the fences and gates are built out in the field, how do you want to be remembered? As the one who fought at all costs and created chaos in your wake—or the one who built bridges and made it easier for those who come behind you?

Time to Refocus
“The quality of your life is directly related to how much uncertainty you can comfortably handle.” – Tony Robbins
by Mark Levin, CAE, CSP executive vice president, Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute |
As we head into the busy summer months of 2025, I think we can learn a lesson from that quote from motivational speaker Tony Robbins. Even while we are trying to deal with the uncertainty of the economy, and the marketplace, and the upheaval in our schools and our courts, and all the other crazy things going on, there is still a reason to be confident of the future.
We have been through uncertainty before. We can handle it. We can adjust to the swings and the challenges we are facing and come through even stronger.
Heck, someday we will probably look back on these days of uncertainty and laugh about them. (O.K. scratch that last comment. No chance of that one happening!
But, instead of focusing our energy on the uncertainty out there, let us regroup, and refocus our attention on something we can actually do something about. Something we tend to overlook in uncertain times but we can’t keep overlooking. That something is building a skilled workforce to ensure the future success of our businesses, and our industry.
There are some very specific things companies, on their own or in partnership with other industry stakeholders, can do to make our industry one that is seen as a pathway to a successful and rewarding career. Since the challenge to attract and keep the best employees is a certainty for the near future, see how many of these workforce development techniques your company is currently implementing.
1. Participate in Structured Training and Onboarding Programs
• Create hands-on, on-the-job training pathways for new workers.
• Partner with vocational schools or community colleges to offer fencingspecific certifications.
• Offer continuing training for current employees (new installation methods, safety standards, production methods, equipment use, etc.).
2. Partner with Trade Schools and High Schools
• Establish relationships with local trade programs to introduce the fence industry as a career option.
• Offer internships or job-shadowing opportunities for students.
• Sponsor or participate in career fairs to attract young talent.
3. Start (or Update) Mentorship Programs
• Pair new hires with experienced team members to pass on knowledge and company culture.
• Use mentorship to support long-term development and retention.
4. Continue Investing in Safety and Certification
• Encourage staff members to get industryrecognized credentials (like those from AFA).
• Promote a culture of safety and professionalism, which makes the career more appealing and sustainable.
5. Use Technology and Modern Tools to Develop Transferable Skills
• Train workers in modern software for design, project management, or inventory control.
• Incorporate newer installation tools and techniques to make work more efficient and less physically taxing.
6. Promote Career Growth Opportunities
• Highlight potential career paths from laborer to supervisor to operations manager, or estimator, or sales – and more!
• Offer leadership development and management training.
We have been fortunate in the fence industry over the past few years to have established an industry that has shown consistent growth and has a promising future. Let’s deal with any uncertainty by increasing – and improving – the career opportunities for our industry’s workforce.

2025 Q1 Survey Reports Slower Growth
According to the 2025 1st Quarter Composite Decking Survey by William Blair, the average growth on the quarter was 4.4%, down slightly from 5.2+% last quarter, yet 71% of the respondents grew, 16% were flat and 13% saw negative growth. The overarching them was uncertainty, particularly related to tariffs.
When asked what is driving business conditions, one respondent says, “Inflation and tariffs have people a little more cautious.” Another noted interest rates were keeping a lid on the industry.
A third person says, "Lower consumer sentiment is driving trade down to lower-priced composites.” In fact, nearly 55% of those surveyed replied they were seeing a trade down to lower price point products, while 40% said they did not. Respondents noted they were turning to TimberTech/AZEK (38%), Trex and Deckorators (37% respectively), Fiberon (9%) and 34% were using other brands.
Other results indicated nearly 50% of those surveyed said their backlog hasn’t changed since last quarter, while 40% said theirs was down. Builders are expecting to see more than 7% growth from the first quarter, despite tariff risk.
The survey asked builders their input regarding the James Hardie/AZEK potential merger. Early concerns were mostly centered around the impact to the distribution landscape, AZEK getting lost as part of Hardie, and the price being increased.
As one respondent says, “No surprise to us. It fits the recent consolidation trend in the industry.” Another replied, “The main thing to keep an eye on is whether or not AZEK decking becomes a lower priority under James Hardie.” A third respondent says, “There will be more opportunity for non-AZEK players in decking and railing.”

Understanding Shop Drawing and Submittals for Commercial Fence Projects
I was recently involved in a project where a fence contractor who was relatively new to commercial contracting became very frustrated with the construction manager, and more so the architect, who were asking for submittals and shop drawings for a project. Shop drawings and submittals are important construction documents used to show how a fence contractor plans to build a project.
1) Shop drawings are detailed plans and actual drawings that show how specific components will be assembled as well as important size and dimensioning requirements. Many manufactures or trade associations will help you with shop drawings. There are also many apps and programs that can assist in preparing professional quality drawings.
2) Submittals may include various brochures, product data, samples, and diagrams that demonstrate how the contractor will comply with the contract. Similarly, these items may be available from your distribution partners or manufacturers. BE AWARE: Shop drawings may be required as part of the submittal package.
process, preventing costly mistakes during construction. They are critical tools used to facilitate communication and coordination between different trades.
Finally, the shop drawing and submittal process may have legal implications. While they are important documents, they do not supersede the contract documents. The contract documents and specifications will hold up in the courts if there is a discrepancy or contradiction. DO NO THINK that a signed submittal will get you off the hook if you use the wrong grade of product or substitute a non-compliant product!
It’s essential to understand and respect the contractual obligations related to shop drawings and submittals, but more important to understand how these deliverables become important part of communication in the construction process.
With nearly 40 years of experience in the fence industry, Robert Miller is president of Imperial Professional Consulting specializing in the perimeter security industry. He is committed to lifelong learning to ensure that the latest trends and standards of the industry are being utilized for complete and effective perimeter security solutions.
The overall goal is to help facilitate a seamless construction process and, most importantly, to officially communicate and document the fence contractor’s plans. For architects, submittals and shop drawings help to clarify how the intended design will be implemented and help ensure the final product aligns with the intended functionality. It also allows the design team to review the fence contractor's plans. For the construction manager or general contractor, they ensure compliance with the contract documents and verify the fence contractor understands the proper installation requirements. They also help to identify potential problems or non-compliance early in the

ASTM High Security Chain Link Applications
Standard Guide for ASTM F1712-11: Steel Chain-Link Fencing Materials for High-Security Applications
by Tony Thornton President, Thornton Fence Consulting Group
ASTM F1712-11 is a standard guide developed by ASTM International that provides specifications for steel chain-link fencing materials used in highsecurity applications. This standard is critical for ensuring the integrity, strength, and durability of fencing systems deployed in environments requiring enhanced security measures, such as military facilities, correctional institutions, data centers, and critical infrastructure sites.
Scope and Purpose, The ASTM F1712-11 standard outlines material requirements, construction guidelines, and performance expectations for steel chain-link fences. The primary objectives of this standard are:
• To establish a framework for selecting highsecurity chain-link fencing materials.
• To define performance requirements for durability, tamper resistance, and intrusion prevention.
• To ensure uniformity in fencing systems used for critical security applications.
Key Considerations in ASTM F1712-11
1. Material Specifications
- Fencing must be constructed from highstrength steel wire to provide enhanced resistance to cutting, impact, and environmental conditions.
- Galvanized or coated steel options are specified to prevent corrosion and extend longevity.
- Wire diameters and mesh sizes must conform to specific security classifications, ensuring restricted access through the fence.
2. Fence Height and Structural Requirements
- Minimum height recommendations are provided based on security levels, typically ranging from 6 to 12 feet.
- The guide recommends additional deterrents such as barbed wire, razor wire, or anti-climb designs for enhanced protection.
- Support posts, braces, and tension bars must be of high-strength steel to withstand forced entry attempts.
3. Tamper and Intrusion Resistance
- ASTM F1712-11 outlines requirements for fence attachment points, ensuring they resist tampering and forced removal.
- Reinforced connections, welded joints, and secure fasteners are recommended to deter unauthorized access.
- Integration with electronic security systems, such as motion detectors and surveillance cameras, is encouraged for comprehensive security solutions.
4. Coating and Environmental Durability
- Fencing materials must be resistant to corrosion, extreme weather conditions, and UV exposure.
- Zinc-coated (galvanized) and polymercoated options enhance longevity and performance in outdoor environments.
- The standard provides testing guidelines to assess material performance in various environmental conditions.
5. Compliance and Regulatory Considerations
- ASTM F1712-11 aligns with security regulations and industry standards set by organizations such as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the American Correctional Association (ACA).
- Compliance with this standard helps organizations meet security mandates for perimeter protection in sensitive areas.
- The guide serves as a reference for engineers, architects, and security professionals designing high-security fencing solutions.
Benefits of Using ASTM F1712-11
• Ensures consistency and quality in steel chainlink fencing materials used for high-security applications.
• Enhances perimeter security through defined performance and material specifications.
• Supports compliance with regulatory requirements for critical infrastructure protection.
• Provides guidance for selecting durable and tamper-resistant fencing solutions.
ASTM F1712-11 is an essential standard for selecting and evaluating steel chain-link fencing materials for high-security applications. By adhering to the specifications outlined in this guide, security professionals can ensure effective perimeter protection, minimize vulnerabilities, and maintain compliance with industry regulations. High-quality chain-link fencing designed under ASTM F1712-11 plays a vital role in safeguarding assets, personnel, and sensitive facilities against unauthorized access and threats.

From Humble Roots to Industry Leadership: The Story of Interstate Wholesale Fence
In the early 1960s, at just 18 years old, Bob Amendola founded what would eventually become a driving force in the fencing industry—Interstate Wholesale Fence. With little more than determination and a vision, Amendola began with a modest local nursery and retail fence shop. But from the start, he saw the potential for something far greater.
Bob wasn’t content with simply selling fencing products—he was determined to redefine how fences were made, sold, and manufactured. He believed in creating a better, more durable product, and that meant challenging industry norms and rethinking traditional methods.
Recognizing that the fencing market lacked innovation, Amendola made it his mission to set a new standard. While others were content repairing low-quality fences, he invested in better materials and processes that would minimize callbacks and maximize durability. From the very beginning, his focus was clear: deliver premium products built to last.
One of Amendola’s most significant breakthroughs came with the early adoption of high-grade PVC compounds—engineered to withstand the harsh Northeastern climate. At a time when the market was still dominated by wood and metal, he introduced one of the
first durable, customizable vinyl product lines. His commitment to quality, even in the face of skepticism, helped lay the foundation for today’s vinyl fencing movement.
As demand for his innovative products grew, so did the company, culminating the launch of its wholesale division in 1986, Interstate Wholesale Fence had evolved from a local shop into a large-scale manufacturing and distribution operation, to meet rising market demand.
Today, Interstate is one of the largest PVC fence wholesalers in the Northeast. Known for its exceptional customization, manufacturing precision, and broad selection of vinyl, aluminum, wood, and chain link products, the company continues to lead the industry.
Backed by a state-of-the-art extrusion facility, Interstate stands apart with its signature innovations—like the doubleribbed mid rail, interlocking panels, heavyduty bottom rails, and double-walled Gate Master frames. Every product reflects the company’s founding values: durability, innovation, and unmatched craftsmanship.
Since 2010, leadership has passed to Bob’s daughter, Jennifer Amendola Cerullo, who serves as CEO and continues the family legacy with the same entrepreneurial drive.
“My dad was truly a pioneer,” she reflects. “He saw where the industry was heading and helped lead the way. We started small, but he built a legacy that reshaped fencing in the Northeast—and beyond.”
Jennifer credits the company’s ongoing success to her father’s relentless pursuit of excellence and an enduring commitment to quality.
“We stay in tune with the market, adapt quickly, and never cut corners. That mindset started with my dad—and it still drives us today.”
From its humble beginnings to its current status as an industry powerhouse, Interstate Wholesale Fence stands as a testament to American manufacturing at its best—driven by innovation, family leadership, and a mission to build fences that truly stand the test of time.
