A Formula for increa$ed profit
There’s a lot of math involved in running a fencing company. Calculating the time required to complete a job, the number of crew members that will be needed on-site, how many jobs the operation can take on and the cost of materials is just the beginning to ensure the business will be profitable. Every opportunity to reduce the time spent on the installation process and maximize resources on the jobsite has a direct impact on the bottom line.
A significant line item in any fencing operation’s calculation is its equipment cost. “Most residential fence installers invest in an earth drill to speed up the posthole digging process,” says Joe Haynes, president of Little Beaver, Inc.
“This key piece of equipment has a big impact on a fencing crew’s productivity, and, with the right features, this expense can lead to a big boost in the bottom line.”
One is Less Than Two
There are many portable earth drill options on the market, but most require two-man operation for safety. When an earth drill hits an obstacle underground, it can jerk and jar the operator with enough force to result in injury. Because this is so dangerous, most drills require two operators to hold the drill steady and combat these effects. However, some earth drills feature a torque tube that makes one-man drilling possible by redirecting kickback to the engine carriage as opposed to the handles.
“When a contractor can subtract one operator from the drilling process, the labor cost for that step is cut in half,” says Haynes. “Multiply that by dozens of postholes for a single fencing job and the savings add up. The second crew member can be reassigned elsewhere, such as following behind and placing the fence posts, to optimize the workforce on the jobsite."
Double Drilling Speed
Ready for more math? One of the key considerations with a one-man mechanical earth drill is its operational speed. Haynes advises looking for one with an auger that can rotate at up to 360 RPM. “Not all drills can meet this speed in a one-man drilling package and it’s common to see drills operating at half that pace. These mechanical earth drills can create a posthole in less than one minute, cutting down on drilling time and speeding up the installation process. The fast rotation speed also creates a smoother, cleaner hole than other posthole digging options, reducing time required to prepare the hole for the fence post. By cutting back on time spent digging, contractors can complete more projects in less time, bringing additional income into the equation.”
Do The Math
The common denominator is finding a mechanical earth drill capable of oneman operation and increased drilling speed. With reduced labor requirements and improved safety features, these earth drills can provide both short- and long-term financial benefits.

Postsaver Expands U.S. Presence with Appointment of U.S. Sales Manager
Postsaver, a global leader in ground-line decay protection for wooden posts, is excited to announce the appointment of Bert Korteling as its new USA sales manager. Based in New Jersey, Korteling will lead Postsaver’s U.S. market growth, working directly with sawmills, lumber yards, and wood industry professionals to expand access to Postsaver’s innovative product range.
This strategic move along with USA product stocking and distribution marks a significant milestone in Postsaver’s commitment to the U.S. market, ensuring faster local support, streamlined communication, and on-the-ground engagement with customers across the country.
"Having Bert on the ground in the U.S. gives us a direct line to our customers and partners, making it easier than ever to deliver timely solutions and build lasting relationships," says Tony Young, head of sales at Postsaver.
One of Korteling’s key focus areas will be promoting the PostMizer application machine – a revolutionary machine which has been developed in conjunction with Wood-Mizer. PostMizer automates the application of Postsaver’s protective barrier sleeves, offering sawmills and lumber yards a faster, consistent, and guaranteed solution for shielding posts against ground-line decay. This aligns with the company’s objective to introduce Postsaver +PLUS rot protection -- offering 40 years of guaranteed protection and performance for wooden fence, deck and gate posts -- to a broad U.S. customer base.
The U.S. fencing market continues to grow, with increasing demand for eco-conscious, long-lasting solutions in agricultural, residential, and commercial sectors. Wood remains the most sustainable and environmentally responsible fencing material, thanks to its renewability, low embodied energy, and natural aesthetic. However, untreated or poorly protected wood is vulnerable to decay at the ground-line – the most common point of failure. As a result, there is a growing need for proven, guaranteed solutions that maximize post life and improves the environmental and economic benefits of wood. Postsaver’s rot prevention technology directly addresses this challenge, giving customers a guaranteed lifespan for their timber investments.
Korteling brings decades of sales experience across the building, development, and contractor sectors. His deep understanding of the North American market and a hands-on approach to customer service make him a strong asset to the Postsaver team.
"I’m excited to join Postsaver at such a pivotal time," says Korteling. "The need for reliable, sustainable ground-line protection in the U.S. is growing, and I look forward to helping more businesses access these proven solutions."

Soft Light Glow Illuminates Visitors
Ornamental fencing blends beauty with function, offering security without sacrificing style. In this section, we explore the latest designs, materials and innovations shaping today’s ornamental fencing market.
Ornamental
FENCE
Style, Performance and Innovation from Catalyst™ Fence
Ornamental fencing has long been a popular choice for both residential and commercial properties, offering durability, elegance and functionality in a single product. At Catalyst™ Fence Solutions, an Oldcastle® APG brand, this category continues to evolve to meet consumer preferences and code requirements with innovation and design flexibility at the forefront.
“Black aluminum fencing continues to lead the way in ornamental fence design,” says Patrick Ianni, vice president of customer operations and product development at Oldcastle APG. “It offers clean lines, air flow and durability, and it fades into the environment without obstructing views. This makes it an ideal solution for pool enclosures, decorative applications and other installations where privacy is not required.”
One of the fastest-growing trends in the industry is the shift toward mixed-material fences. By combining aluminum frames with privacy or semi-privacy infills, such as vinyl, wood or composite, customers can tailor their fence to both their aesthetic preferences and functional needs.
When it comes to material choice, aluminum dominates the ornamental fencing market. It’s lightweight, rust-resistant and low-maintenance compared to wood, which can rot, or steel, which may rust. Additionally, wood and steel require annual maintenance. Vinyl is another option for ornamental fencing, and both aluminum and vinyl offer lifetime warranties, which is a major selling point for contractors.
“The real differentiator in our aluminum fencing is in the quality of the powder coating,” Ianni explains. “From pretreatment to finishing, that process determines the fence’s long-term resistance to weather, corrosion and wear. At Catalyst, our industry-leading powder coating showcases our
Solutions
attention to detail in every stage, from fabrication to packaging, ensuring a high-quality product that lasts.”
Durability also comes down to installation. Ianni emphasizes that proper post setting and concrete pouring, along with adherence to manufacturer instructions, are critical for long-term performance. For regions like Florida and California, Catalyst also offers solutions that meet wind load and fire resistance codes.
In terms of security, ornamental fencing can serve a purpose beyond mere decoration. “We offer high-security options with arched, spear-top pickets that are difficult to climb, offering both beauty and protection,” Ianni says. “And with the right gate hardware, customers can have peace of mind without compromising design.”
Catalyst Fence Solutions is also looking to the future. Ianni points to growing interest in decorative infill panels, new privacy materials and evolving customization options. As codes tighten and consumers seek more versatile solutions, aluminum’s flexibility makes it well-positioned for growth.
“Don’t let initial pricing turn you away,” Ianni advises contractors and homeowners. “When you consider the lifetime warranty, minimal upkeep and long-term value, ornamental aluminum fencing often proves to be the smarter investment.”
With performance, customization and curb appeal all in one package, ornamental fencing, especially aluminum, remains a strong and stylish choice for today’s properties.

Ornamental + Security
For over 70 years, Master Halco has continued to deepen its commitment to be the preferred choice for contractors nationwide for all their fencing materials, including the ever-growing aesthetic perimeter security needs.
Security level alone does not determine the perimeter fence, but style, cost, and performance are all key points in finding the right match. Ornamental fencing, one of the most common industrial and commercial perimeter security styles, sits at 8-feet tall with a curved spear picket, bringing not only the protection of assets needed but also the appeal of a traditional fence style without a high sticker price. In commercial and industrial perimeter security applications, this style of fencing deters and protects, while delivering the desired aesthetic.
Master Halco, a leading fencing wholesaler, offers Highland+ and Highland 2 Steel Commercial Fencing. Named after the rolling hills of Scotland, Highland+ and Highland 2 Steel Commercial Fencing is designed to showcase the property and provide security to the grounds and facility it surrounds no matter the terrain.
Highland+ Steel Commercial Fencing system includes panels that are 8-feet wide, with three rails and a few style options including a Spear Top, Picket Top, Universal Top, and Security, which is a curved outward spear top while Highland 2 comes as three or four rails. There are 2.5”, 3”, and 4” posts with a few options for thickness, and the pickets come in 3/4” square 18ga or 14ga for Highland+ and 1” square 14ga pickets for Highland 2. All items are powder-coated black and backed by a 20-year limited warranty. “Having one of the highest backed warranties in the industry, you know you can depend on the quality of Highland+ Steel Commercial fence panels,” says James Davoli, Master Halco product manager.
Providing a continuous and seamless look, the Highland+ Steel Commercial Fencing adapts effortlessly to the rolling terrain through its unique and hidden racking structure in the rails. Designed to meet the customers' needs no matter the grade of the land, Highland+ Steel Commercial Fencing secures the property by racking to 30” over the span of the 8’ wide panel. “Having a steel fence that racks easily in either direction helps the installation be quicker and simpler than other steel fencing panels,” explains David Davis, the general manager from Custom Fence.
With the reporting of events growing across the United States, the need for more perimeter security continues to grow in the fencing industry. Solutions like Highland+ and Highland 2 Steel Ornamental Fencing will give the protection needed while following the terrain seamlessly and keeping the aesthetic appeal of a traditional fence.

A Championship Gate Solution by AIDI
For 30 years, Architectural Iron Design has helped fabricators, architects, contractors, and homeowners build the fences and gates of their dreams. They supply gate automation hardware as an exclusive distributor of the Comunello brand, and they’re also the go-to for any and all fencing parts from iron to aluminum to brass. In addition, they offer paints and patinas to cover any project type.
When AIDI was called upon by longtime customer Budget Fence and Gate Systems in south Florida for a special gate project, they had just the right solution to fit the situation.
Working on Their Swing
Budget Fence was contacted by a country club and golf course that they had worked with in the past and had a long-standing relationship with. The club had a service gate they needed to replace. While they initially had a swing gate, they found it kept getting hit by cars pulling too close to the path of the gate. Tired of constantly making calls for repairs, the golf club wanted to modify their gate system.
The club had installed a swing gate thinking there wasn't enough room for a standard slide gate. The area around the gate that could be used for back-side storage was very limited. They asked Budget Fence and Gates to provide the function, aesthetic, and practicality they needed in a gate solution.
The end goal was to minimize the amount of gate that encroached onto the course when it was open, since it was opening into the golf course itself.
Navigating the Hazards
The biggest obstacle of this project was that the asphalt driveway is on an incline, with limited back-side storage. Budget Fence had to make sure that the concrete ribbon was poured properly and leveled, with a ledge on either side.
With this in mind, Budget Fence recommended a slide gate with half-length panels to ensure it would fit into the space available and remain hidden from view when opened. This would allow for the largest possible opening for all vehicles that needed to access the area.
Additionally, there was concern there would be an issue with gate sag. Luckily, the 4"x2" frame is strong enough to support the weight of the gate without any sag.
The Ace in the Hole
AIDI supplied the hardware for a sliding gate with aluminum picket gate panels as the best option for the golf course. It’s part of the Comunello Ranger Gate System, a telescoping slide gate with a shorter track that allows for the gate to slide behind existing hedging and hide from view.
AIDI's premier brand, Comunello, offers this high quality solution that met the unique needs and limitations of the golf course. The two-panel Ranger system has back-side storage that is about half of the opening, perfect for projects where space is limited.
As a bonus, Comunello's products have a reputation for longevity, perfect for the harsh south Florida climate and heavy salt air. The Comunello Ranger telescoping setup provided a hassle-free solution that will last for years to come.
Outcomes are Up to Par
Installing new technology can come with unforeseen challenges. Fortunately, Budget Fence was prepared. Torrey Purnell of Budget Fence and Gates Systems was grateful. “The team at AIDI was able to provide amazing support, even going so far as to have a representative onsite throughout the process.” AIDI sent account representative Tom Simon to Palm Beach to provide any assistance needed.
Purnell also noted the thrill of seeing the gate up and running for the first time. Course employees and club members have certainly noticed, sometimes stopping to comment on how nice the new setup looks.
Creative solutions often start before the build. Learn about Comunello's lineup of gating systems at archirondesign.com.
Protect Ornamental Fences with Fence Armor’s Strimmer (Trimmer) Guard
So you’ve installed some beautiful ornamental fencing for a client. They love it! But as soon as yard maintenance begins, the potential problems surface. Mowers can’t get to the thick grass around the posts and out come the grass strimmers (trimmers) and weed wackers.
Over the grass cutting season, it’s not just the grass and weeds getting trimmed, the strimmer (weed wacker) cord nicks, chops and slices away the wrought iron, aluminum, or metal posts of ornamental fences. By fall, these posts all bear the scars. Some may be fully cracked with others chipped and open to moisture damage with the outer protective coat gone. Either way, the ornamental fence does not look as good as it did in the spring.
Fence Armor® strimmer (trimmer) guards provide complete protection from strimmer (weed wacker) damage. “We realized there was a gap in the market for protecting ornamental fences, particularly at the post base, where it’s more susceptible to damage,” says Al Martins, Fence Armor director. “By installing Fence Armor’s strimmer (trimmer) guards, you’re not just protecting your fence’s appearance, you’re extending its lifespan, reducing maintenance cost, and preserving your property’s curb appeal. It’s a simple, affordable solution that pays off season after season.”
Made from galvanized American steel, Fence Armor’s strimmer (trimmer) guards are proudly manufactured in North America and designed to fit a wide variety of fence post sizes, shapes and styles. Martins says another key
benefit is how easy they are to attach. “You just slide them on either side, at the determined ground-level spot (ideally about 1 to 1.5 inches above the ground), and click-lock them into place – no special tools required. They are also easy to remove and reinstall if repainting or recoating the fence.”
Fence Armor strimmer (trimmer) guards come in a range of colors, with custom colors available upon request. Whether you're protecting a classic black wrought iron fence or a modern vinyl post, there's a finish to suit your style.
Invest in long-term durability and curb appeal with Fence Armor.

Summer Surge: Revenue-Generating Jobs for Land Contractors in Summer
Summer is a prime time for land-clearing professionals to take on high-paying jobs like tall grass mowing, brush removal and invasive species control. Whether cutting grass that’s grown up to the cab, reclaiming property swallowed by brush, or helping towns prep for fire season, having the right attachments gives contractors the power to say "yes" to more jobs, generate repeat business, and grow their reputation.
The professionals at Diamond Mowers offer suggestions for four revenue-generating jobs to finish the summer season with strong revenue:
1. Tall Grass and Brush Cutting. From roadside mowing to pasture reclamation, tackling tall grass and dense brush are reliable moneymakers all summer long. For thorough and efficient cleanup, Diamond’s Brush Cutter Pro X clears grass, brush, and branches to keep land neat and manicured and prevent weeds from sprouting. The Brush Cutter Pro delivers the same premium durability and multi-faceted cutting performance, but with specific tailoring for a broader range of carriers. When it’s time to move beyond brush and into larger vegetation, the Drum Mulcher DC Pro is ideal for standard-duty applications like fence line maintenance and general brush clearing, providing effective cutting power on dense trees and vegetation without overkill. For heavierduty work, the new Drum Mulcher Pro X2 is available in both open drum and depth control configurations and makes quick work of thick brush and vegetation up to 9” in diameter.
2. Fence Line Maintenance – Keep Boundaries in Check. Vegetation encroaching on electric fencing can cause shorts and jeopardize livestock safety. That’s why regular maintenance on fences in urban environments or across acreages of land is important for extending their life, reducing repairs, and saving on long-term costs. The Brush Cutter Pro simplifies this task with a low push bar that clears beneath a fence’s bottom wires to remove perennial under/overgrowth. For even thicker material, the Drum Mulcher DC Pro powers through dense trees and vegetation while controlling discharge by directing debris toward the ground.
Feature :
Superior Privacy: Wings provide extra screening with an approximate 90% privacy factor (dependent on wire/ mesh used)
Durable and Resilient: Extruded from HDPE with EVA wings that stay flexible yet strong. The two "legs" on either side of the slat body are built in for extra support.
Easy Maintenance: Our products are resistant to severe weather and wear. Cleaning can be quickly accomplished with water.
3. Stay Ahead of the Spread of Invasive Species. By mid-summer, invasive species are no longer sprouting –they’re sprawling. Left unchecked, these plants can choke out native growth, disrupt ecosystems, and harm land productivity. For operators seeking a more productive and versatile tool, the Drum Mulcher OD Pro X2 is a onepass wonder that delivers high-quality mulch thanks to its optimized infeed system. The Drum Mulcher DC Pro X2 can help contractors conquer heavier duty mulching and invasive species management while delivering an equally fine mulch that looks clean and professional.
4. Storm Cleanup and Fire Mitigation. From tornadoes and flooding to hurricanes and wildfires, natural disasters can wreak havoc on the land, leaving behind downed limbs, toppled trees, and scattered debris. Having the right equipment on hand enables contractors to respond quickly and effectively.
Diamond’s excavator attachments, including the Brush Cutter Pro X and Drum Mulcher DC Pro X, excel in these scenarios. The power and precision of these tools, combined with the extended reach of an excavator, allows operators to manage debris in hard-to-access areas along steep banks, over ditches, and through heavily obstructed terrain.
For even more aggressive cleanup, the Drum Mulcher OD Pro X is engineered for heavy ground engagement and excels at chewing through fallen trees, scattered debris, and dense brush left behind by high winds or wildfires.
Additionally, tree stumps left behind after storms can obstruct new plant growth and diminish a property’s appearance. Both the Miller and the Reflex stump grinders are designed to grind stumps of virtually any size to below ground level thanks to their 1-inch-thick, heavy-duty wheels that smoothly slice through tough material and resist impact and abrasion.

The Bison Level.Up Deck Pedestal System stood out for its innovative approach to simplifying and revolutionizing how ground-level decks are built, without the hassle of digging post holes or filling them with concrete.
“Winning the Popular Science Home of the Future Awards is a very exciting honor, considering the magazine is known for bringing solutions to everyday homeowners,” says Jennifer Johnson, business development manager at DAP. “Coming from an iconic, trusted resource for homeowners, the award reinforces Level.Up Deck Pedestals as the fast, easy way to install beautiful ground-level decks without the back-breaking labor, time or hassles of traditional building methods.”
The Bison Level.Up Adjustable Deck Pedestal System eliminates the need for concrete footers and posts, replacing them with a telescoping pedestal design allowing for fast, precise height adjustments. Each pedestal supports up to 750 pounds with a Factor of Safety (FoS) of 3 and its slope-compensating design can handle up to 8% grade using Slope Levelers, offering unmatched versatility for deck builders and advanced DIYers. They are available in 12-pedestal kits to build up to an 8 X 10 ft. deck using 2X6 support joists. Multiple kits can be used to build even bigger decks.
The system also reflects Bison’s ongoing commitment to sustainability. The pedestals are manufactured with 20% post-consumer recycled materials and are weather-, freeze- and mold-resistant, ensuring years of reliable performance in all climates.
The Level.Up Adjustable Deck Pedestal Joist Support System comes with a 10-year pedestal system warranty.

Fiberon Partners With ‘Military Makeover’ to Honor Air Force Veteran With Donated Deck
Fiberon Decking joined forces with the television program “Military Makeover with Montel®” to build a deluxe deck for a military veteran. The company donated the materials for a 200-square-foot composite deck, creating an outdoor oasis for 20-year Air Force veteran Matt Kosto.
“Matt served multiple deployments with the military, and we wanted to show our appreciation for his service and honor those who make the sacrifice to serve their country,” says Kate Haws, Fiberon director of brand communications. “Matt loves spending time outdoors with his family, so giving him a revamped, low-maintenance space to do that is our small way of giving back.”
The new deck features Fiberon’s Good Life composite decking, perfect for creating a casual outdoor living space with an authentic wood look. Built in the color Bungalow from the Good Life Escapes collection, the deck resembles exotic hardwood in a deep, rich brown. Crucial for Kosto’s Arizonabased home, the Good Life collection is Class B fire-rated, meaning it is designed to slow the spread of flames, provides an added layer of protection to the property and offers greater peace of mind.
Good Life is made with 94% recycled material, combining recycled wood with the long-lasting resilience of recycled plastic. Its durable composite core resists splintering, rotting, cracking, insects and decay, and a three-sided cap layer helps resist staining and fading. The decking is backed by a 30-year performance, stain and fade warranty.
As part of the project, Fiberon also provided its CountrySide railing in brown to enclose the deck. CountrySide railing strikes an ideal balance between beauty and strength, featuring an understated satin finish and clever sub-rail reinforcement. Round, matte black aluminum balusters finish the look with a unique contrast.
Led by talk show legend, military advocate and veteran Montel Williams, “Military Makeover with Montel®” enlists conscientious designers, contractors, landscapers and other home improvement professionals to transform the homes and lives of military families across the country.

PRESIDENT, OLDCASTLE FRD (FENCE, RAILING AND DECKING) with
KEN O'NEILL
From his early days in the field to his leadership role at Oldcastle FRD, Ken O’Neill’s career reflects the evolution of fencing products, practices and partnerships. His hands-on experience and strategic insight have made him a trusted voice in an ever-changing industry. He’s built a well-deserved reputation for not only his deep technical knowledge, but also for his commitment to customer relationships and industry growth. Fence News had the chance to talk with O’Neill about his career path and get his insight into what sets this industry apart.
What was your background leading up to your current position? I grew up in New Jersey and have been with Oldcastle/ CRH for 25 years. I was part of a family business we sold to Oldcastle in 2001 and have led many parts of the organization. When we launched Catalyst Fence Solutions earlier this year, I was named president of Oldcastle FRD (Fence, Railing, and Decking).
What are your primary responsibilities? My responsibilities are more allencompassing now for the entire business, ensuring we are taking care of our customers and providing innovative products and service platforms.
Oldcastle encompasses multiple brands. How do you describe all you offer and your mission? We have built our portfolio around the “owning the backyard,” and our portfolio was built to provide these products and services to the contractor, design professional and homeowner so they can create their dream backyard or to solve any problems they might have.
What sets Oldcastle apart from other companies? Our people and our culture. We are a high-performance culture and look to continuously improve in all that we do. We are also a combination of many
family businesses, and I think that DNA is different than larger companies who do not have those types of roots.
What have been some of the biggest challenges you or your company has faced in recent years? Navigating the tariffs and the pressure that imported products create in the domestic marketplace in recent years, along with the general uncertainty they can create, has become more and more challenging. In addition, labor continues to be a challenge as we continue to see pressure on the availability of workers in manufacturing.
What are your goals for Oldcastle? To make this business better each day for our employees and our customers. To not rest on our past and to always challenge ourselves and the industry to be better.
What do you enjoy the most about your job? I love the outdoor living space as well as building materials in general. I grew up in this industry and enjoy seeing the hard work that goes into both the manufacturing and installation of our products. We also meet genuine people who work with their hands every day to create these spaces for end users. I do not think there is a more rewarding (and at times, challenging) industry out there. It’s
high energy and tons of action, which makes every day different and fun.
Have you had any role models or mentors who positively influenced your success? I have had many – from family to those here at Oldcastle who came before me. The common themes from all of these are grit and hard work, remember the customer, take care of highly performing employees, be on the floor more than the boardroom, and never give up.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? You cannot do it alone. Get a good team and share your vision. Align and go after it with everything you have.
What advice would you give someone just starting out in this industry? Find value in yourself and your business – I think the industry too often focuses on price versus the value you can bring to a project.
How do you stay motivated every day? I have always had the opinion that you are responsible for your family. That’s the one at home and the thousands of employees who come to work every day. They are counting on me and all of us to give it our best so they can provide for their families as well.

Beyond the Fence: Creating Safer, Smarter, and More Beautiful Public Spaces
When we think of public parks, sports fields, and recreational spaces, we picture lush green grass, children playing, and families enjoying a sunny day. Behind the scenes, one essential feature quietly ensures these areas are safe, secure, and welcoming—fencing.
Whether it’s a city playground, a soccer complex, or a multi-use park, fencing plays a vital role in enhancing safety, creating boundaries, protecting facilities, and boosting visual appeal. As North America’s premier custom netting provider, InCord understands the importance of well-designed fencing for public spaces.
“Fencing isn’t just about putting up a barrier—it’s about creating a space where communities feel safe and supported,” says Tammy Raymond, marketing director at InCord. “From playful rope fences in children’s areas to netting around sports fields, each choice serves a purpose.”
Raymond highlights multiple ways fencing can enhance these public spaces:
Boundary Definition & Protection of Amenities
Clear boundaries help maintain order and protect park features, such as playgrounds, picnic areas, and athletic fields, from vandalism or misuse. Fencing also provides park users with a greater sense of comfort and security, knowing that the space is monitored and well-maintained.
Safety and Security
Safety is a top priority in any public setting, especially where children, athletes, and large crowds gather. Fences provide a physical barrier that helps prevent accidents, restrict unauthorized access, and facilitate smooth crowd control and pedestrian flow within the area.
In sports areas, protective netting is a must-have. “Barrier netting surrounding a soccer or baseball field prevents balls from flying into stands, parking lots, or neighboring areas,” explains Raymond. “It safeguards not only the spectators but also the integrity of the game.”
For larger parks or event venues, fencing solutions like rope or temporary fencing can help manage crowds, designate restricted zones, and protect landscaping.
Privacy and Community Integrity
Fences are also important for maintaining privacy in recreational settings, particularly when parks are located near residential or commercial areas. They can help prevent encroachment, reduce noise, and maintain the separation between public and private property.
“In playgrounds, fences help ensure children stay within safe areas, preventing them from wandering into roads or more dangerous parts of the park,” adds Raymond. “This kind of simple structure can make a world of difference to parents and caregivers.”
Enhancing Visual Appeal
Beyond function, fencing can also contribute to the overall look and feel of a space. Creative designs can reflect a park’s character. For example, natural wood for a rustic trail, colorful netting for a kids’ zone, or even thematic elements that align with local history, environmental themes, or public art initiatives.
“A thoughtfully designed fence blends safety with style,” says Raymond. “At InCord, we love helping communities create beautiful spaces that are as inviting as they are secure.”
From safety and structure to aesthetics and community pride, fencing is more than a practical necessity—it’s a foundational element of every great recreational space. With custom solutions from manufacturers like InCord, parks and sports facilities can be both functional and visually appealing.

CASE STUDY: Lock Park Transformation
Building a Fully Inclusive Play Experience
Overview
For more than 100 years, Lock Park in Lake Charles, Louisiana, has been the very spot where Ryan Street, 7th Street and Dr. Michael DeBakey Drive all intersect. The land, purchased more than a century ago by Ellen Martha Goos Lock, was donated to the City of Lake Charles in 1917 in honor of her late husband Captain George Lock. One condition placed on the donation was that the space must always be maintained as a park.
Concerned over maintaining the park in perpetuity, Lock set aside funds to ensure her family could continue supporting the park through the generations. For six generations this family legacy was upheld and as family members passed on or moved away, the seventh generation, determined to maintain Ellen Lock’s legacy, established an endowment at the Community Foundation SWLA in 2015. The Lock Family Endowment Fund is ensuring the family’s multi-generational stewardship will continue through future generations.
Following the devastating blows the City of Lake Charles suffered at the hands of Hurricanes Laura and Delta in 2020, the City began to pick up the pieces of its heavily damaged park system. Rather than just put things back the way they were before, City leadership envisioned a new future for Lock Park, and thanks to the Lock Family Endowment and other key partners, Lock Park is becoming a transformational space for community inclusion.
The Vision
Inclusive playgrounds and parks are vital because they create welcoming spaces where children of all abilities can play, explore, and connect, promoting community, empathy, and equal access to recreation for all. In July 2023, the community got its first glimpse at the new vision for Lock Park, the first fully-inclusive playground for children and families of all abilities in Lake Charles. A $100,000 donation to the City’s Partners in Parks Fund at the Community Foundation SWLA and a new partnership with Families for Inclusion, a program of Children’s Miracle Network, were also simultaneously announced.
Challenge
Situated inside Lock Park is the historic Lock Park Pavilion. The 2020 hurricanes dealt destructive blows to the structure that housed the
park’s restrooms. Architects and structural engineers determined it was necessary to completely take down and rebuild the historic structure.
Securing FEMA funding and following the steps necessary to reconstruct the more-than-100-year old structure would take time, but the time ensured that the reconstructed structure would be an exact match for the original. Additionally, the restrooms were reconstructed to meet modern ADA standards, including hand rails, ramps and wider layouts, making them accessible for families with unique needs.
In early 2025, the City of Lake Charles cut the ribbon on this rebuilt structure and provided a glimpse at what the new Lock Park would look like.
Results
The City of Lake Charles contracted with Baton Rouge-based CARBO Landscape Architecture to host community feedback sessions and design the new park. DynaPlay, the local Louisiana representatives for Landscape Structures, have generously volunteered their time to assist with the layout and selection of inclusive play equipment that will be used as the basis of design for the final plans. As the result of the community engagement events and advisory committee meetings, the design team prioritized equipment that allows for independent play as well as opportunities for side-by-side play for all abilities. With planting and perimeter fencing, the playground will be a haven for families offering a unique experience within Lake Charles.
Plans for phase one were unveiled in February 2025 with completion anticipated later this year. The reimagined park will have an expanded footprint, which will allow for more built-in accessible structures, as well as fencing surrounding the park. At its heart will be universally accessible playground structures—featuring ramps, transfer platforms, and wheelchair accessible swings—so every child can join in the fun. The playground surface will be smooth poured in place rubber, ensuring safe mobility for wheelchairs, strollers, and children with sensory sensitivities. Sensory rich zones with musical panels, quiet nooks, and tactile play areas are part of the new design, along with shaded seating pavilions, and clearly marked pathways for ease of navigation.
Accoya Revives the Iconic Bow Bridge in Central Park
Accsys, manufacturer of Accoya—one of the world’s most highperformance and sustainable wood products—is excited to showcase Accoya on the deck of the iconic Bow Bridge in Central Park.
After more than 160 years of enduring weather extremes, heavy foot traffic, and countless film productions, the bridge showed clear signs of wear. While it underwent a comprehensive restoration in 2015,
by 2024, the Southern Yellow Pine decking required replacement. For this essential upgrade, Accoya emerged as the optimal solution - its exceptional dimensional stability ensures the wood retains its shape and structural integrity without warping, cupping, or swelling, even under New York’s intense seasonal fluctuations. In addition to its superior performance, Accoya’s sourcing from sustainably managed forests and its minimal environmental impact made it a natural fit for the Central Park Conservancy and New York City Parks, aligning with their long-standing commitment to ecological stewardship.
The restoration of the Bow Bridge deck has revitalized this historic gem. Using Accoya, the bridge exemplifies how timeless design and modern innovation can coexist in perfect harmony.
“It’s a privilege to contribute to the preservation of such a cherished New York City landmark,” says Sergio Munhoz, sales director for Accsys North America. “Bow Bridge required a material that could offer longterm reliability while respecting its historic character. Accoya’s superior durability, dimensional stability, and sustainability credentials made it the right choice to help ensure this iconic structure continues to be enjoyed for generations to come.”

Bridge
New York City’s Central Park is renowned as one of the world’s most famous urban landscapes, and few spots capture its beauty and charm quite like Central Park's Bow Bridge. Spanning 87 feet across The Lake - one of the park's most picturesque bodies of water, linking the Ramble on the east to Cherry Hill on the west - the bridge was first constructed in 1860. With its graceful castiron curves, intricate detailing, and sweeping skyline views, the Bow Bridge is an architectural marvel of its time and one of the most photographed and iconic pedestrian bridges in the world.
In addition to the Bow Bridge, Accoya was used to restore the Gothic Bridge, also in Central Park and near the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir Running Path.
Accoya provides unmatched reliability in wood. It is produced and tested to prevent visible swelling, shrinking, or distortion, making it perfect for windows, doors, decking, and siding. Accoya offers an unrivaled 50-year above-ground and 25-year in-ground and freshwater warranty.

turrentine Southwest Fence& Deck
Opportunity is Everywhere
In 1983, Jamie Turrentine left Oklahoma University with his diploma in hand and headed to Dallas, Texas. In such a big city there is no shortage of opportunities. Turrentine immediately found an opening in the construction industry and leaned into his network, in this case retired Dallas Cowboys football player Randy Hughes, and began building fences at project sites. It wasn’t long until the workload required extra hands, and the early days of Southwest Fence & Deck had begun.
“As the workload and company were growing, I had help from my friends Ben Wallace and Mark Robinson at Jamieson Fence who gave me my first line of credit in 1984,” says Turretine, president of Southwest Fence & Deck. “Every chance I was given, and every investment are what led to us being able to develop the company into what it is today.”
Turrentine and his team focused on wood fences and retainers. They learned from other professionals in the industry to become the best at fence building. As their skills developed and clientele increased, Southwest Fence & Desk expanded to other areas of exterior construction.
“We’ve always been a referral-based company. We rely on our clients to help us grow by giving their vote of confidence to their friends and families,” Turrentine says. “Because of our customer’s belief in us, we have completed projects throughout Texas as well as parts of Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana.”
Today, Southwest Fence & Deck has over 45 fulltime employees and manages wood fencing projects, trellises, arbors, cabanas and decks of all styles. The company has also developed its own in-house metal work, fencing, and structural projects.
“Many of our employees have been with us between 10 and 30 years. Our team is committed to being knowledgeable and innovative and they care about providing the highest standard of service and quality products. Our people have made us successful, both our employees and our customers,” Turrentine says. He says mentors, from a variety of industries along the way also helped the company grow.
“Charlie Pollen, owner of Quality Fence, demonstrated and helped us shape a product our customers and our team could take pride in. It’s important to have connections in your industry, but you
jamie
can learn from the experience, wisdom, success, and failure of everyone. Pay attention to the people around you and always be kind. Consider the kind of legacy you wish to leave behind.”
Turrentine adds that Southwest Fence & Deck is always seeking out new products and ways to grow. When opportunity knocks, they respond!

Management Corner HARNESSING THE POWER OF Publicity
For small businesses, including fence contractors, there is not always the budget needed to fund media advertising. The good news is that getting your name out there doesn’t always have to mean spending big bucks on advertising. In fact, some of the most effective publicity is free – if you know how to get it. Here are some smart strategies to help your fence company earn attention without breaking the bank.
Start by identifying what makes your business newsworthy. Have you recently completed a unique project, expanded your services, earned a certification or adopted new technology that sets you apart? Local media outlets and industry publications are often looking for stories that highlight innovation or community impact. Send them a short, clear press release or pitch about what you’re doing differently and why it matters.
Community involvement is another powerful way to earn free publicity. Sponsor a local event, volunteer to build a fence for a park or a local charity or offer to speak at a community meeting about safety and property security. These efforts show you’re invested in the community’s wellbeing, making your company more relatable and appealing to potential customers.
Social media is also a game-changer that requires minimal cost other than your time. Post updates about your projects, share behind-the-scenes photos, highlight your team members and showcase your expertise. When you share useful fencing tips or answer common questions, like how to maintain a wooden fence or why vinyl fencing is a good choice for certain properties, you position yourself as a trusted local resource. This can attract not just followers, but also journalists or bloggers looking for expert commentary.
Another free tactic? Leverage happy customers. Word of mouth is powerful, so encourage satisfied clients to leave positive reviews on sites like Google, Facebook, and Yelp. Pull these testimonials into new content for your website and social posts.
Finally, don’t overlook partnerships. Team up with complementary businesses like landscapers, pool companies or real estate agents for cross-
promotions. You might offer bundled deals, share each other’s content on your social platforms or provide guest blogs on each other’s websites, for example, to help you reach new audiences for free.
Keep in mind that free publicity isn’t just about luck; it’s about putting yourself out there with intention and authenticity. It’s worth the time it takes to hone your skills and develop a strategy for generating consistent positive publicity value. By being proactive, sharing your expertise and staying involved in your community, you can boost your fence company’s visibility without spending a dime. The result? More leads, stronger relationships and a reputation as a business that’s as reliable as the work you build.
What’s the role of a leader, really?
Creating an Environment Where People Thrive
by Michael Reed executive director, American Fence Association
If you strip away titles, fancy definitions and social media hype, you’re left with this simple fact: A leader’s job is to create and maintain an environment where people thrive. That’s it.
In our industry, where deadlines, the competition for customers and the pressures of day-to-day operations can easily consume us, it’s easy to forget that leadership isn’t about control, it’s about creating the conditions for success for others.
Leaders generate momentum in an organization. They do it by modeling the behaviors they want to see in others. They do it by intentionally shaping the culture, day by day, conversation by conversation, decision by decision. They do it by recognizing and rewarding people who step up, who solve problems, who take initiative and who help the team move forward.
If you want your team to be adaptable, show them adaptability in your actions. If you want your team to stay positive in the face of challenges, let them see you facing challenges with optimism and grit. If you want your team to take ownership, model ownership in the way you handle problems.
Leadership Is Defined by Your Behaviors
A lot of people think leadership is about holding a title or sitting in a particular seat at the table. But leadership isn’t a position, it’s a series of learnable behaviors. You are a leader because someone chooses to follow you, based on the way you behave.
This is backed by research from James Kouzes and Barry Posner in The Leadership Challenge, where they identify five key leadership practices: Model the Way – demonstrating credibility through consistent values and actions
Inspire a Shared Vision – communicating how everyone wins with purpose
Challenge the Process – making good things better, and fixing things that are broke
Enable Others to Act – showing others how to create impact
Encourage the Heart – demonstrating empathy and a true caring for others
Each of these practices is a set of behaviors, not a personality trait, and each practice can be learned and strengthened.
Your team will follow you when your actions align with your words. They will follow you when you consistently show up with integrity, when you listen, when you provide clarity and when you lead with purpose. Leadership happens in the small moments just as much as in the big decisions.
You Get to Shape the Environment
In our organizations, the environment you create as a leader directly impacts jobsite safety, customer satisfaction, team morale, and your ability to retain top talent. A thriving team doesn’t happen by accident; it happens because someone intentionally creates the environment for it to happen.
What kind of environment are you shaping through your presence, your priorities and your choices? What kind of behaviors are you modeling that others will take as permission to follow? What kind of energy are you bringing into your team meetings, your job sites and your customer interactions?
Your environment is a result of what you tolerate, what you reward, and how you show up.

Be Intentional About the Impact You Create
Every leader creates an impact, intentionally or unintentionally. The question isn’t whether you’re creating an impact, but what kind.
A leader who is intentional about the impact they create pays attention to the environment they are building—and takes ownership of it. Leadership is not a mystical gift. It’s a responsibility you step into, one behavior at a time.
So, what kind of environment are you creating for your team today?
Who Moved My Crystal Ball?
by Mark Levin, CAE, CSP executive vice president, Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute |
I am always somewhat amazed when people ask me what I see coming down the road as challenges – or opportunities – in the fence industry over the next two years, or even five years. I actually like it when that happens, because: a) it gets my adrenaline going as I start making some mental lists of the possibilities, and b) it makes me feel good that people think I am smart enough to be able to give some reasonable answers to that question.
I guess people feel since I have been in this industry for more than 30 years (way more than 30 years!) I should have something to say. And, in today’s fast-moving business world, I do.
Quick story before I pontificate. To explain how fast things can move, I use an example of trying to set up the CLFMI (Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute) Summer Meeting in Montreal. I have made dozens of bank transfers with Canadian banks the past few weeks. The last time I did one, I filled everything out, indicated I wanted to transfer $2,000 CAD (Canadian dollars) to the business in Canada, and the form automatically told me how much that would be in U.S. dollars ($1,478.72). When I hit “continue,” the system told me I put in an incorrect routing number and sent me back to start all over. I got distracted and it was about 3-4 minutes later when I got around to sending the transfer again. I put in $2,000 CAD again, and this time it said I had to pay $1,482.56 USD!
I had lost $4.00 in 3 minutes! Turns out, the U.S. had just announced new tariffs on Canada, and I was already paying the price. If things can change that fast, how could I possibly know what was going to happen in the next 2 to 5 years? How could I look more than a few months (days?) down the road?
Uncertainty is bad for business in any industry, and the fence industry has never been immune from that phenomenon and never will be. In my time in this industry, we have been through natural and human-caused disasters, stock market swings and near crashes, technology jumps that made everyone simultaneously wish for the “olden days” and yet, praise the technological advances as they occurred, and do not even get me started on political hanky-panky. Here is the thing: people keep telling me not to get upset over uncertainty because there is nothing you can do about it. Just take care of the things you control and everything else will work itself out. To which I say, ….. (well, I can’t say it
here or Fence News will cut my pay in half). So, maybe I can feel just a little in control by predicting a few things we are going to see in the near future.
1. Technology is not only going to continue making our jobs faster and easier, but will also make them safer, more flexible, and actually, somewhat more enjoyable because of the adaptability and transferability of more skills. AI is already changing fast paced to warp speed and, yes, the cheaters and scavengers will ruin it for many, but it offers many more pluses than minuses. Better jump in now or get used to standing on the sidelines while the competition moves ahead.
2. The value of strategic partnerships is going to explode like bitcoin was supposed to explode a few years ago. One of the ways to limit some of that uncertainty we all hate is to find partners who reduce not just risk, but also mistrust. This is another area where technologys will likely drive some businesses toward each other, all for the betterment of those who embrace it.
3. Safety and security have been the cornerstones of the fencing industry for a quarter of a century (yes, 9/11 was that long ago) and those cornerstones have supported the growth of numerous other markets and industries. This is not going to change in the near future, but what has changed in the past 25 years is that safety and security have jumped from “added value items” to “minimum expectations.” We must keep developing our products and services and move to the next level of everything in every way.
4. The most successful contractors will be those who come to the realization that customers do not care what you do – they care about what you can do for them. You will have to master the ability to empathize with your customers, focus on outcomes and build a level of trust through every communication vehicle available to you (yeah, you better be tech-savvy, too.). Remember that having empathy is a characteristic – communication empathy is a skill.
5. Affiliation will become a vital part of your company’s brand. Did you ever notice how many companies put the logos of the organizations in which they are members on their websites, advertisements, social media posts and everything else? They are not bragging about how many organizations they pay dues to – they are using the credibility of those groups to add to their own credibility. “Guilty by association” is not always a negative concept.
It is incredibly difficult to be in the forecasting business right now. I feel kind of sorry for people like our CLFMI Chief Economist, Dr. Matthew Kidder. Matt uses many scientific and statisticallysound methods to calculate his forecasts, and then he has to be ready to answer the “what if?” questions thrown at him. Questions such as, “What if the tariff wars go in this direction?” or “What if the Federal Reserve raises interest rates?” or “What if the residential market continues to slide?”
Nobody likes uncertainty, especially businesspeople. Maybe we can all take a little lesson from columnist Ernestine Ulmer: "Life is uncertain. Eat dessert first."
As executive vice president of Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute for 38+ years, Mark Levin is also an author and avid promoter of the fence industry. He believes in the successful leadership qualities he promotes, including listening, delegating, consensus building, communications and effective decision-making.

Navigating Uncertainty: Strategies for Commercial Fence Contractors
The uncertainty of business has never been more evident than it is now in the fence industry. As we face tariffs, price escalations and ongoing volatility, it becomes increasingly difficult to bid long-term commercial projects where these factors can severely impact your bottom line.
Commercial fence contracts are often awarded for projects scheduled 12 to 18 months after the initial bid. As I’ve said before, always read the specifications and review your construction manual to determine whether price escalations are permitted. Check if your contract includes any concessions that allow for adjustments in the event of material cost increases.
Regardless of where you stand politically, the reality is that the fence contractor—especially in the commercial market—is typically the one who bears the financial burden of tariffs or sudden price spikes.
Here are three steps you can take to protect yourself in today’s volatile market:
1. Read the Contract Thoroughly
Review all bidding documents and identify any clauses that allow for price escalations. While I don’t recommend including a price disclaimer in your bid, it’s essential to state how long your bid is valid for. Setting an expiration date can give you a firm footing in renegotiations if material costs shift dramatically before project award.
2. Coordinate with Vendors and Plan Ahead
3. Factor in Price Increases
While no one has a crystal ball, try to anticipate price fluctuations and reflect those in your bid. Even if your price is higher than others, being the only contractor willing to guarantee pricing over the contract term can give you a competitive advantage.
Commercial fence contracting carries greater risk—but also the potential for greater reward. If you remain professional, diligent, and proactive, you’ll set yourself apart from the competition and become the go-to choice for general contractors and end users alike.
With nearly 40 years of experience in the fence industry, Robert Miller is president of Imperial Professional Consulting specializing in the perimeter security industry. He is committed to lifelong learning to ensure that the latest trends and standards of the industry are being utilized for complete and effective perimeter security solutions.
Talk with your suppliers or wholesalers about preordering and consider negotiating long-term stocking strategies—whether at their facility or your own. Check the contract documents to see if stored materials can be billed ahead of time. While the documentation requirements can be burdensome, the payoff is worthwhile. You’ll protect your pricing and demonstrate reliability to the contractors you serve.

Mr. Fence
Less is More
Rarely does success happen overnight, but consistency and staying focused on the big picture can help an idea become a reality. While Shawn King, president of Mr. Fence, has been in the fencing industry for nearly 40 years, he says the path was not a traditional one, but every step had meaning.
“My earliest memories in fencing are helping my stepdad with his fencing businesses,” says King. “From helping to keep the work site clean, to driving dump trucks at just barely 16 years old. After high school I planned to go to college but ultimately found myself as a partial owner of a fence company. It was tough, but we’ve come a long way since then.”
Throughout its history, the Mr. Fence brand has included several product lines including staining and even landscaping. Today, the company primarily focuses on residential fences, decks, docks, pergolas, arbors and gate operators. Fence professionals may be most familiar with the Mr. Fence Academy training program.
Mr. Fence Academy is a training system that helps fence companies operate more efficiently and more profitably. King offers individual and group training programs
with direct support from other fencing professionals who have gone through many of the same challenges new and established businesses face when looking for growth opportunities.
The academy launched in 2019. At the time, King was a full-time law enforcement officer, but between training officers and fence professionals, he found a passion in teaching.
“I wanted to go to college to pursue computer information technology,” he says. “That wouldn’t have been my passion then, and it’s not now. I love to teach people how to do the job they want to do and how to do it the right way. I spent my entire 10 years in law enforcement as a field training officer, and with Mr. Fence Academy, I get to mentor other fence builders every day.”
King says the road to success was hard, but all his experience is what allows him to provide such quality training programs for others. “I’ve been through a lot, and I’ve seen a lot, but I learned from every mistake and now I have firsthand knowledge to give to others so they can make their business better.”
How does he suggest doing just that? Charge more, know your numbers and focus
on what you’re good at. “Don’t be afraid to charge more when you need to, your company is yours and only you can know what your cost is, what profit you want to make, and what that means for your prices. Success is based on you. With your numbers in mind, consider what revenue stream is the best fit for your team. Focus on what you do the best and make a plan to move in that direction.”
Mr. Fence is currently working on educating and creating the I-Drive Power System™, an installation method that provides a superior foundation that increases the strength and longevity of fences. I-Drive is compatible with wood fencing using the KING+ method, vinyl fencing using the uNi-5™ connector, and aluminum fencing using the IPost.
