Supervisors of Stephens Pipe and Steel
In this issue of "Fence News" we honor four of the many supervisors who have helped make Stephens Pipe & Steel successful for 51 years. Between these four, there is over a century of experience, commitment and loyalty. We salute them, one and all. We couldn’t do it without them.
I started at SPS Fence on September 23, 1996. I am currently the supervisor over our Centurion Select, Windscreen department and Aluminum/Steel residential ornamental fencing products. I enjoy working with my crew and the sales department everyday at our manufacturing facility in Jamestown, KY.
Cindy Simpson
I began in August 1999 building gates. I transferred in 2000 fabricating material, working under my father. I worked there for more than 20 years and recently in 2023 became a supervisor making ornamental gates. SPS is family oriented and I love working in the SPS family and considered it an honor and a privilege to work along side of my father, Glenn Ballenger.
Glenna Thomas
I have worked with SPS for over 39 years and I am the Supervisor over shipping. I love working for SPS because of the owners, Terry and Pam Stephens. They are very caring and wonderful people. Also, the pay is competitive and I love the people who have worked for me and with me to make the company a success.
Barry Warriner
I started at SPS Fence in February 1992 cutting, fabricating and painting gates. While looking to grow different departments, I was offered the supervisors position for our hardware department in 1996 and I have been in this role ever since. With 33 years of service, its been a great opportunity to work for same the company and help be a part of our success.

STRONGER THAN STEEL: Superwood
Superwood, a timber-based material engineered to outperform steel, is set for commercial release this summer, offering a lightweight, sustainable alternative for modern construction.
Maryland-based startup InventWood is set to mass-produce the first batches of Superwood Facade, a new material made of modified timber that reportedly has up to 50% greater tensile strength than steel, pest and rot resistant, has minimal expansion and contraction, and boasts a Class A fire rating.
According to InventWood, the launch of its 90,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Frederick, Maryland, is poised to drive the product’s next phase of growth this summer.
Superwood offers strength superior to steel, providing the performance required for the most challenging building conditions. Its lightweight nature makes it easier to handle and transport, and also reduces costs and construction challenges. On a performance basis, making Superwood generates 90% lower carbon emissions than steel, plus it locks carbon away for long term storage. Superwood can be made from underutilized, or even waste wood.
University of Maryland materials scientist Liangbing Hu first developed Superwood in 2018 using a “densification process.” Since then, he has refined the method to allow for large-scale production in just hours—rather than weeks—and has since licensed the technology.
Superwood’s impressive strength comes from a two-step process engineered by Hu’s team. First, wood samples are boiled in a solution of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfite to partially remove lignin and hemicellulose. Next, the material is hot-pressed, collapsing the cell walls and aligning cellulose nanofibers to create a fully densified structure significantly stronger than natural wood.
The process can be applied to a wide range of wood species and is scalable for mass production. Early in the process, the wood remains pliable, allowing it to be bent and formed into specific shapes before it hardens into its final ultra-strong form.
In May, the Florida Chapter of the American Fence Association held the first of what promises to be an annual Educational Sun & Fun event in Bradenton, Florida.
The event began with a brunch at The Riverhouse on the Manatee River in Palmetto, Florida, with an educational session on teamwork and developing a “Culture of Success” in your fence company. The presentation by Thomas Luby of Profit Builders International was followed by a river boat cruise down the Manatee River to beautiful Anna Maria Island where the group enjoyed a pub crawl poker run with many prizes.
AFA Florida Chapter President Lewis Blastic says the event was a big success and the group promised to continue promoting good will and fellowship in fencing with another event planned for late fall on the east coast of Florida.

In today’s world, trusted perimeter security is more critical than ever. We’re delving into the latest innovations in high security fencing, exploring materials, technologies and best practices to keep sites, facilities and properties—and the people within them—safe.
High Security Fencing
Innovative Security Solutions for Power Utility
The Ameristar Perimeter Security team of experts understand that each site has unique challenges that require a balance of active security components and physical security systems to meet security requirements. This is especially true for the power utility industry (PUV).
Seeing the unique challenges and requirements for the power utility industry, Ameristar’s team developed a high security enclosure grid, Matrix – the first to successfully meet IEEE Grounding Standards with steel powder coated fence. Matrix is a flexible system that can adapt to a variety of security needs, with heights from 8’-22’ and infill options providing 37%-94% opacity.
Phil Barrett, Ameristar PUV sales engineer, explains that Ameristar’s high security fencing allows the customer to integrate extra security peripherals like anti-ram cabling, intrusion detection cabling, access control wiring, communication and video cables - saving customers time and money by eliminating the need to run additional wiring through the ground.
Ameristar recently introduced Matrix Alpha to meet the unique security needs of a customer operating a large network of power
utility substations. Matrix Alpha is available in a galvanized or PermaCoat finish and offers a simple curtain wall installation. The curtain wall installation unique to Matrix Alpha allows for variable post spacing resulting in reduced installation times.
Ameristar began working with a utility company several years ago, initially providing innovative security solutions through the development of Matrix Alpha and eventually providing full support in streamlining multiple phases of the project. “Ameristar optimized material procurement, delivered comprehensive engineering support, and facilitated weekly coordination with the owner, engineering firm, and general contractor,” says Barrett. “This collaborative approach ensured the project stayed on schedule and within budget.”
He adds that an additional benefit of working with the Ameristar team is their ability to offer a full portfolio of security products to meet the unique needs of their customers. “From high security solutions like Matrix systems, to crash rated bollards and barriers, to industrial strength ornamental fence and gates, Ameristar is prepared to secure and protect a large variety of critical infrastructure.”

INNOPLAST: Trusted Protection at the Perimeter and Beyond
Founded in 2005 and headquartered in Garfield Heights, Ohio, Innoplast has become a leader in vehicle and facility protection products.
“While our name is often associated with the industry-standard BollardGard™ bollard cover, our product line extends beyond a single product,” says Gary Bowling, Innoplast CEO. “Our goal is to help businesses protect their people, property and investments without sacrificing appearance or ease of use.”
BollardGard™ covers are manufactured from high-density polyethylene and enhanced with 3M reflective tape, offering not only visibility, but also long-term durability. They’re engineered to withstand harsh environmental conditions and reduce the need for costly maintenance or repainting. With Innoplast’s patented GripperTabs™ system, Bowling says installation is quick and secure—no special tools required. These characteristics allow for a natural fit in environments where security barriers and fencing are deployed, including retail centers, logistics hubs, parking facilities and government sites.
“At Innoplast, we believe safety shouldn’t come at the expense of style or simplicity,” explains Bowling. “Our customizable options, including color matching and brand designs, allow clients to meet their functional needs while reinforcing their visual identity. Whether you're securing a stadium, safeguarding a storefront or simply guiding traffic, we offer dependable solutions that stand guard year after year.”
Innoplast also offers a variety of complementary safety products, including clearance bars, flexible bollards, parking blocks and speed bumps. Flexible bollards are a popular choice for high-traffic areas where vehicles may occasionally make contact. They’re designed to bend on impact and return to their original position, helping to minimize damage to both vehicles and surrounding infrastructure.
With an 80,000-square-foot production and distribution facility, Innoplast offers quick turnaround times and consistent customer support. “We proudly serve a diverse customer base, including airports, hospitals, educational institutions, distribution centers and local municipalities,” says Bowling. “Our clients include trusted names like UCLA, Logan Airport and 3M—all organizations that demand the highest level of reliability.”
As high-security fencing continues to evolve, Innoplast remains a vital component of perimeter protection. Bowling adds that bollards and barriers often work together with fencing systems to create layered security strategies that address both pedestrian safety and vehicle threats. “By providing products that enhance visibility and reduce impact damage, we help fencing professionals build safer environments from the ground up.”

High-Security on Demand: Portable AntiScale Fencing
Crowds surge. Pressure builds. And suddenly, a fence becomes the only thing standing between control and chaos.
Across the country, government agencies, contractors, and event organizers are rethinking how they manage crowd control and secure perimeters during protests, demonstrations and emergency responses. When traditional barricades fall short, and permanent fencing isn’t practical, temporary security solutions must perform at a higher level. “You hope you never need it—but when you do, you better have it to deploy quickly,” says Andrew Hession, temp fence specialist with SONCO, a leader in the crowd control and perimeter safety industry for nearly 50 years.
A PURPOSE-BUILT SYSTEM FOR SERIOUS SECURITY
Hession explains that SONCO’s Anti-Scale Portable Security Fence Panels are designed for high-risk environments where temporary fencing needs to do more than define a boundary—it needs to hold. Constructed with expanded metal mesh, each panel prevents hand and foot holds, even when intruders are wearing gloves. Standing eight feet tall, the system also creates a strong visual and psychological barrier that deters scaling attempts.
But physical strength is only part of the design. The mesh pattern also plays a strategic role: it allows visibility while offering partial cover. Police and security teams can remain alert without being fully exposed, a critical factor in situations where objects like bottles or debris may be thrown from a crowd.
What truly sets the system apart is its structure. Unlike clamp-style setups, these panels bolt together at multiple points to create a rigid wall that resists force. Each panel anchors into a heavy-duty steel baseplate with reflective markings, which helps maintain stability even under pressure. In situations that demand extra reinforcement, optional brace arms can be added to strengthen the setup. And for access points, the system is also compatible with gates, which can be equipped with caster wheels when needed.
“When temp fencing isn’t enough and permanent fencing isn’t an option, this system offers a middle ground delivering high security, deployed quickly,” adds Hession.
SAFETY ISN’T JUST IN THE PRODUCT—IT’S IN THE PROCESS
Temporary security systems aren’t just about steel and specs. They’re about trust: trust that the barrier will hold, that the setup is sound, and that people on both sides of the fence are protected.
“In high-pressure situations, security decisions have to be backed by more than product specs—they need to come with experience and guidance,” says Stephen Greer, CEO, SONCO. "That’s why every part of SONCO’s Anti-Scale system is engineered to work together, from the mesh panels and baseplates to the braces and anchoring accessories."
Following the full setup recommendations isn’t just a best practice, it’s essential to performance. It helps reduce the risk of issues like bending, breaking, or unintended movement under stress.
Avoiding shortcuts and resisting the urge to modify the system—like skipping parts or altering components—can make the difference between a controlled perimeter and a compromised one. Every piece is there for a reason, and small changes in setup can lead to bigger problems in the field. “At SONCO, we don’t just ship panels; we provide guidance and documentation to help teams deploy them safely and effectively—because when pressure rises, there’s no room for improvisation,” stresses Greer.
WHO IT’S FOR AND HOW IT SHIPS
The Anti-Scale Security Fence system is tailored for procurement teams at government agencies, universities, event organizers and fence contractors working on highsecurity projects. Orders are built to spec and shipped in container quantities, typically 140 panels per load, along with baseplates and accessories. Lead times range from 60 to 90 days, depending on configuration and delivery needs.
READINESS THAT DOESN’T COMPROMISE
For security professionals, Greer says few decisions carry more weight than perimeter planning during crisis events. “This isn’t your everyday temp fence— it’s a critical line of defense for when the stakes are high and failure isn’t an option.”

CASE STUDY: Wallace Perimeter Security Delivers Reliable Bifold SpeedGate Solutions for FedEx Express at Denver International Airport
OVERVIEW
In the high-stakes world of logistics, operational downtime isn’t an option. When FedEx Express needed a secure, fast, and reliable solution to replace their aging perimeter gates at Denver International Airport (DIA), they turned to a trusted name in perimeter security: Wallace Perimeter Security.
CHALLENGE
The existing vertical pivot gates were no longer up to the task. Frequent repairs, rusting, and downtime had become a recurring burden—both in cost and security risk. What FedEx needed wasn’t just a gate replacement. They needed a performance upgrade. That’s where Wallace came in.
SOLUTION: BI-FOLDING SPEEDGATES
Wallace’s bi-folding SpeedGate systems, such as the PDXT and FoldSmart, offered the perfect solution. These gates are designed for fast cycle times and minimal maintenance—two critical needs for 24/7 operations like FedEx Express. Unlike traditional swing or slide gates, bi-fold gates open and close in seconds, reducing wait time, bottlenecks, and security vulnerabilities.
But performance is only one part of the equation.
“The key with any solution is a balanced offering,” says Stephanie Olynick, national sales director at Wallace Perimeter Security. “You have to meet the security needs of the end user while balancing budget, constructability, and increasingly, aesthetics. Our folding gates check every one of those boxes.”
A TURNKEY COLLABORATION
Wallace collaborated with Taylor Fence, a local installation partner known for managing complex perimeter projects. With FedEx operating at full capacity during the install—right before their peak holiday season—timing and coordination were critical.
The project required shutting down key vehicle access points while ensuring security was never compromised. Taylor Fence, acting as the general contractor, managed all aspects of the site work, including concrete and electrical subcontractors. Taylor Fence delivered and installed ahead of schedule, keeping FedEx’s logistics network running seamlessly. “It was a complicated project with a lot of moving parts, and they just did amazing,” says Christine Lang, facilities advisor at FedEx Express.
RESULTS: SECURITY THAT WORKS—AND LASTS
FedEx is now saving money each month in maintenance costs thanks to the new Wallace FoldSmart SpeedGate. More importantly, they’ve gained peace of mind. These bi-fold systems don’t just meet perimeter security standards – they set a new benchmark for durability, performance, and visual integration.
“Whether for airports, logistics hubs, data centers, or secure municipal sites, Wallace Perimeter Security’s bi-fold gates are engineered to perform in the most demanding environments,” adds Olynick. “Because when time, security, and aesthetics matter—you need more than a gate. You need a solution.”

Delaying and Detering, While Safeguarding Assets
For over 70 years, Master Halco continues to deepen its commitment to be the preferred choice for contractors nationwide for all their protection needs, including a full line of perimeter security fence products.
In today’s current threat environment, a layered approach to protection is critical. Whether an airport, stadium or data center, there remains a core need for multiple barrier types and applications to mitigate the risk of assets being compromised or lost. “At its core, the fence and its attributes remain a key component of this layered approach to support detection, deterrence, denial and delay to protect critical assets,” says James Bodine, CPP, director of business development - high security with Master Halco.
Bodine highlights three different types of security fencing options and the advantages of each, including anti-climb, anti-scale, anti-cut, and breach-resistant protection:
Chain Link. While some identify chain link on the lower end, it is still a market stable option, widely used today. And when using a thickergauge wire and tighter diamonds, it will provide an anti-climb solution. To lower the ability of a person to gain a foothold or handhold, the fence mesh can be as tight as 3/8-inch diamond with a 6-gauge. Designed to provide more delay than standard chain link, mini mesh weaving requires more time and effort to defeat due to the multiple twists for each wire. Finally, topped with a three-strand barbed arm, chain line and/or mini mesh makes an economical material solution for any perimeter security fence.
Welded Wire. Moving up the scale to a higher-grade security solution is welded wire. A common sight in zoos, critical infrastructure, factories, logistics hubs, and more, it provides anti-climb and anti-cut protection
while providing more aesthetic appeal versus than many other fencing solutions. Welded wire is exactly as it sounds – wire tack welded together to form sheets that are typically either face mounted on a square post or set in an I-beam. Due to the adjustability of wire gauge and spacing between wire welds, design of the sheet, speed and ease of manufacturing, and availability of additional security attachments, welded wire has become a popular security fencing solution.
Palisade Fence. Sometimes called ornamental, this higher-end fencing solution includes pickets (also known as pales), rails, and typically I-beam posts rolled from galvanized steel powder-coated for corrosion protection. “Palisade style fence is best known for its intimidating look to deter potential intruders and its functionality with razor-sharp spikes at the top. It is an increasingly more common style of fence as the market for higher-end security increases,” says Chase South, president of Rustic Fence Specialists, Inc.
Coming in both anti-scale (23 pickets per 8-foot section) and anticlimb (16 pickets per 8-foot section), the Palisade style fence comes as hardened steel to increase the breach protection and anti-cut security, putting it near the top of the security fencing scale.
"As reporting of events across North America and the globe continues, a strong and integrated perimeter security system, including the proper fence and barrier solution, remains central to mitigate the risks from a criminal or terrorist act,” adds Bodine. “The next time you look at a fence, remember its role to be able to deter, detect, deny, delay and defend the assets that lie within.”

Cost Effective Design of a Vehicle Crash Barrier System to Protect an Entire Perimeter of Critical Infrastructure Facilities
In the past, vehicle crash barriers were designed primarily to protect embassies and military facilities in hostile environments. Today, with changing threat levels, there is a clear need to protect critical infrastructure facilities in the US and Canada with vehicle crash systems.
Markus Erbeldinger, Ph.D., senior product and marketing manager, with AMICO Security, explains that vehicle crash barriers are typically designed around the ASTM F2656-20 Standard. The ASTM F2656-20 Standard Test Method for Crash Testing of Vehicle Security Barriers is dedicated to vehicle barriers. This standard includes six classes of vehicles, all traveling at speeds of 30, 40, or 50 mph. The six classes are grouped by weight reflecting commonly used vehicle classes:
Considering that crash tests are extremely expensive, Dr. Erbeldinger says the industry is focusing on the 15,000 lbs. M class, usually at 30mph (M30) or 50mph (M50). Focus is on the M class because it correlates to the historical standard established by the Department of Defense and Department of State. This older DoD/DoS standard correlates nicely with the M class: M30 translates to K2, M40 translates to K8, and M50 translates to K12. An important aspect of a vehicle crash testing is the actual penetration of the payload, which could be assumed to be explosives loaded on the bed of a truck (crash test photo) or the leading edge of the base of an “A” pillar on a small passenger car (SC), a full-size passenger sedan (FC), and a pickup truck (PU). The penetration rating is shown with the letter P behind the crash rating, for example M50-P1 which means a payload of a 15,000-pound truck traveling at 50mph penetrated a security barrier less than 1 meter or 3.3 feet.
P1 ≤1 m [3.3 ft]
P2 1.01 to 7 m [3.31 to 23.0 ft]
P3 7.01 to 30 m [23.1 to 98.4 ft]
Similar to the P rating, the older DoS/DoD standard uses the letter L to designate the penetration. Unfortunately, the numbers don’t match very well with P1 being similar to L3, P2 being similar to L2, and P3 being similar to L1.
“Using the ASTM standard effectively is the key for a cost-effective vehicle crash system design,” says Dr. Erbeldinger. “Considering that M50 means a 15,000-pound truck crashing into a gate or perimeter at 50 mph straight on, it would make a lot of sense if this gate were located at the end of a long straight driveway (AMIGUARD 9700 SERIES CANTILEVER CRASH GATE). If the same truck must navigate a 90-degree turn or must bypass several obstacles on a straight driveway to enter, the M50 level protection might be overkill as the truck can’t reach 50mph. In these situations, a M30 level protection is probably sufficient.” He says the same principle applies to the penetration rating. “For an embassy in a hostile urban environment or a critical infrastructure building next to a public road or sidewalk, a P1 penetration rating is recommended. However, for critical infrastructure facilities or equipment located in large areas several hundred feet away from a perimeter fence and gates, a P2 rating would be sufficient in most cases.”
Since crash rated systems like cable systems or crash rated gates are significantly more expensive compared to their non-crash rated equivalents, the design of those systems is important to control costs without losing effectiveness. In most cases, regular gates and fences are acceptable on some portions of the perimeter due to limited access at high speeds. Dr. Erbeldinger says it is highly important to consider the location of the perimeter and the landscaping when designing the crash rated barrier. “It does not make sense to utilize a crash rated cable system behind the fence line if vehicles can’t access the fence at high speeds. Trees, large rocks, hills, bodies of water and ditches are excellent ‘natural’ vehicle barriers and would minimize the requirement for a crash rated fence. Some facilities even consider vehicle access when designing their landscaping. For example, a curvy driveway or strategically placed large rocks would be inexpensive alternatives to vehicle barriers.”
He shares the key features of active and passive vehicle barriers. Active barrier systems like operated swing gates, sliding gates, crash arms, retractable bollards and wedge barriers complement passive barriers like cable systems, fixed and shallow bollards (AMIGUARD 9310 SERIES FIXED BOLLARDS). For a cost-effective design, multiple types of active barriers should be considered for the same facility. A crash rated cantilever slide gate is often used for the main entry. Retractable bollards or crash arms in front of standard gates are also a good option. For secondary gates, manual crash swing gates (AMIGUARD 9600 SWING CRASH GATE) provide cost-effective solutions. Aesthetics are an important factor in designing passive barriers. Decorative bollards are often utilized in protecting facilities in urban areas. Crash cables integrated into a fence line are often considered to be superior looking compared to stand alone systems. Integrated cable systems effectively conceal the crash cable within the fence line which is often the reason for choosing such a system. Crash cables are the most cost-effective solution for covering long stretches of a perimeter, according to Dr. Erbeldinger. The application of a correct penetration rating is important for cost control. For example, the M30/M50-P1 crash cable system from AMICO Security requires crash cable line posts every 20 feet whereas the
M30/M50-P2 crash cable system only requires line posts every 200 feet and at corners (AMICO Security AMIGUARD 9100 crash cable post). Ease of installation is also important as labor costs are a significant part of overall project costs. Stand alone cable systems are more efficient to install compared to cable systems integrated into a fence line (AMICO Security AMIGUARD 9100 stand alone crash cable). Integrated cable system designs vary significantly between manufacturers. The AMIGUARD 9100 INT integrated crash cable system was designed with ease of installation in mind (AMICO Security AMIGUARD 9100 INT integrated crash cable). This system works with round Chameleon posts and square Chameleon2 posts from AMICO Security, and can accommodate any infills offered by AMICO Security. The bypass rail system used to house the integrated crash cable has advantages over traditional designs (CHAMELEON2 cable rail bracket for AMIGUARD 9100 INT crash cable). Long stretches of cable can be inserted into the open rail without obstructions. The cable can be locked in place after placing them into the rails, and does not require threading through openings inside the posts. The integrity of the posts is not affected by brackets holding the rails compared to systems where the cable requires post cut-outs. Another advantage of the AMICO system is the fact that rails housing the crash cable are installed on the secure side of the posts and are not touching the actual fencing infill. Particularly in palisade fences, the extra rails touching the back of the pales could be considered a stepping hazard.
Dr. Erbeldinger says each critical infrastructure facility needs to be considered independently even though there might be similar facilities requiring the same level of protection. “Every stretch of the perimeter should be considered separately. In most cases a combination of M50, M30 or no crash level protection at all is sufficient and provides for a cost-effective design. The same principle applies to the penetration rating: the distance from the fence to protected objects needs to be taken into account since a P2 rated system is a fraction of the costs of a P1 system. For crash cable designs, the installation costs need to be considered as some designs are more easily installed than others.”

Revolution Barriers is not a fence, it’s security. And it’s not just security, it’s protection from visual observation and noise pollution, and it can also offer ballistic protection from small arms fire up to Level 8 (7.62 NATO).
The Revolution Barrier team’s decades of experience in fence construction, military service, public utilities, product development, education and public service, has been harnessed to develop highly effective, purpose-designed protective barriers that are beautifully engineered to enhance the safety and aesthetics of any property requiring concealment and protection.
“Revolution Barriers is setting a new standard in the fencing industry by blending robust security features with sophisticated design elements, creating fences as strong as they are visually appealing,” explains owner Jim Vargovich. “We are dedicated to providing innovative, sustainable high-security fencing solutions that prioritize safety, privacy, and environmental responsibility, along with aesthetics."
Beyond the striking appearance of the six- to twelve-foot-high extruded aluminum panels in their powder coated interlocking framing, Revolution Barriers features patented modular, interlocking, stacked construction, which makes it quick to install and easy to replace single damaged sections rather than entire panels. The aircraft grade extruded aluminum panels lock together to form a gap-free visual barrier and can be fitted with ballistic protection as well as internal wiring for surveillance cameras and other security technology.
Revolution Barriers offer flexibility in facility protection by creating an unclimbable visual and noise barrier in certain areas while integrating ballistic protection in other sections, within the same fence structure due to its modular design and adaptable construction. “Gone are the days of chain link and razor wire being the only high security fencing options,” says Vargovich. “Highly effective protective fencing can be visually appealing, too!”
include:
• Protect critical equipment and control centers, power substations and utility facilities from vandalism and gunfire, significantly reducing vulnerability from targeted attacks.
• Dramatically improve school safety with ballistic barriers in key locations, along with the Revolution Barriers shelter-in-place kit, which transforms any classroom into a safe room. These kits are installed over existing doors, and are light enough for one or two people to handle with no additional equipment.
• Protect government grounds and buildings, commercial enterprises and industrial facilities against unauthorized access while maintaining a professional aesthetic that demonstrates a commitment to security and crime prevention.
• Create an effective sound reduction and visual screen for working locations and rooftop equipment, such as industrial air conditioners and handlers.
• Provide superior residential privacy, noise control and aesthetic appeal on the exterior, and the ultimate in interior protection with ballistically protected safe rooms.
• Control pedestrian traffic within facilities and create mobile ballistic protection walls for highly sensitive events and locations.
“In a world where safety and style often seem at odds, Revolution Barriers proves you can have both,” adds Vargovich. “Our fencing products deliver unparalleled protection and a polished look—truly redefining what’s possible in perimeter security fencing.”

More Than a Fence: Building Hope and Purpose at Ronald McDonald House
The Ronald McDonald House, long known for offering comfort and support to families of hospitalized children, recently welcomed a new addition: a new Trex Fence to enclose their dumpster. But the story isn’t just about premium composite fencing, it’s about people, purpose, and partnership.
The project was powered by a coalition of committed organizations and volunteers. Builders First Source stepped up to ensure timely delivery of the Trex materials, bringing everything needed straight to the job site with efficiency and care. Then, two respected local companies: Mills Fence and Meyers Fence, brought their professional know-how to the forefront, guiding the installation and offering hands-on expertise. Lastly was SRF Fence & Supply Co., the National Distributor for Trex Fencing, who supplied the materials for the project.
But perhaps the most inspiring part of the installation came from five unexpected craftsmen: high school freshmen involved in The Victory Project, a privately funded mentoring and personal development program for disengaged young men in Dayton. These students didn’t just carry tools, they brought purpose, determination, and a fresh sense of pride in contributing to a project that directly supports families during their most vulnerable moments.
“Being helpful can sometimes feel selfish,” says Harrison Dover from SRF Fence & Supply Co. who was on site and helped coordinate the project. “I got to work with old friends, get kids involved with using tools and equipment and helped out a fantastic charity in the process."
The Victory Project aims to re-engage young men with their education, their community and their future. Under the guidance of seasoned professionals, these students learned new skills, earned confidence, and saw firsthand what it means to give back.
Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) is a nonprofit organization that provides support and resources to families with sick or injured children. Its primary service is offering free or low-cost housing near hospitals so families can stay close to their child receiving medical care. In addition to housing, RMHC offers meals, emotional support, and other essential services through a global network of Ronald McDonald Houses, Family Rooms, and Care Mobiles.

Pioneer Millworks Introduces New Thermally Modified Flooring and Deckling Line, ABODO® Vulcan
Pine. 100% recyclable and renewable, and with a stable supply chain, ABODO® is an alternative to: vinyl siding, cement board, and pressure treated lumbers. The thermal modification process results in a reduced resin content giving the wood an enhanced stability and long-term viability, all supported by a 15-year warranty.
Free of Red List chemicals, fungicides, insecticides, and plastics ABODO® is the perfect choice for both exterior and interior applications. Additionally, the thermal modification procedure provides it with added water repellency, protection from insects, and allows it to sequester more carbon than is used during its manufacturing process.
What separates ABODO® Vulcan from other thermally modified products on the market is the conscientious testing processes that occurs both in the lab and long-term field trials.
The managing director of ABODO® Daniel
Gudsell says, "The only way to prove that a modified wood is durable is to do a field test, which involves putting wood out in an accelerated decay zone and trying to create an environment where it will decay very quickly, and you can have comparable samples."
"Class 1 durability is the highest form of durability based on lab testing. We have done these tests and ABODO® has Class 1 durability. It's critical that you have a field test to support that. A lab test gives you an indication, and a field test gives you concrete proof," says Gudsell.
Offering unsurpassed durability, and weatherability, our thermally modified siding is also available in a plethora of proprietary finishes and profiles, and can work with any architectural intent or application, whether vertical, horizontal, commercial or residential.

Women Leading the Way in Fencing BREAKING BARRIERS
In an industry long dominated by men, women are making their mark. This special section highlights the inspiring stories and achievements of female leaders who are driving innovation and setting new standards for success in the fence industry.
Leading with Strength and Strategy
Jennifer Zhou, Chief Financial Officer and Deputy General Manager of Fence Empire LLC, has built a remarkable career at the intersection of finance, operations and global trade—fields where women are still underrepresented.
Zhou has been with Fence Empire since her husband, Jason Liu, founded the company in 2017. “Prior to that, I worked in financial management for international trade companies, which laid a strong foundation for helping build Fence Empire into what it is today,” she says. Her role has expanded over time, evolving from handling accounting to overseeing broader operational areas. “When Jason travels overseas, I step in to lead day-to-day company operations, ensuring stability and continuity in leadership.”
Fence Empire is one of the largest direct-trade suppliers of Japanese cedar fencing and a major supplier of metal fencing materials to the North American market. With a lean, international team and offices in the U.S., Japan, China, and Cambodia, the company imports approximately 2,000 containers annually.
“My academic background in finance and business management, combined with years of experience in international trade, prepared me well for this role,” Zhou explains. “I would describe myself as detail-oriented, calm under pressure, and comfortable wearing multiple hats.” She also emphasizes the importance of empathy and emotional intelligence, especially in leading teams and building long-term partnerships, something that is vital for longterm success.
Zhou acknowledges, and has firsthand experience in, the challenges of working in a male-dominated industry. “In the beginning, I sometimes had to work harder to earn the same recognition as my male counterparts, especially in production or logistics discussions,” she says. “But over time, the results spoke for themselves. I’ve learned to embrace my voice and bring my own leadership style to the table.” Her confidence is displayed through her steady strength.
Her guiding principle? “Be strong, but stay kind.”
Women’s emotions are often weaponized against them in the workplace. However, to young women entering the field, Zhou offers this advice, “Learn as much as you can, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to step into leadership roles. You don’t have to change who you are to succeed—you can lead with empathy, clarity, and strength all at once.” Zhou believes that strength and compassion can coexist to create a successful career.
If Fencing Supply Group regional vice president-southeast, Ashley Duncan, is sure of one thing, it’s that change is always going to happen. While change is challenging, it can also be rewarding.
“Market conditions are ever changing and sometimes that requires a team to quickly develop a strategy, so they don’t miss an opportunity,” she says. “The greatest success is when individuals of different backgrounds come together for a common goal. This is why I think it’s fantastic to see more women in leadership roles across the industry. As the industry continues to evolve and diversify, we can approach opportunities from a different perspective.”
Fencing Supply Group is a premier distributor of fencing, perimeter security and outdoor living products. “Our model combines local relationships, service and expertise on a national scale to benefit customers, employees and our suppliers. We have around 1100 team members across 83 locations spanning
the United States in 34 states, with operational coverage spanning all 50 states,” Duncan explains.
As regional vice president, she is responsible for managing the Southeast region’s P&L, which encompasses operations and management of 18 distribution branches along with a sales team that supports those branches.
“My region spans across Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee, Alabama and Louisiana,” says Duncan. “Before taking on this role, I had the privilege of leading our supply chain team, which allowed me to learn the industry and develop great partnerships with our suppliers.”
Duncan previously worked with Georgia-Pacific for 13 years in a variety of different roles. “This experience gave me strong perspective and confidence on what best in class looks like from a process and structure perspective along with a deep understanding of operations and supply chain,” she says.
As a student-athlete at Georgia Tech, Duncan says she developed three important strengths pivotal to her success: a strong work ethic, persistence and confidence. These pillars are the foundation of advice she offers to other women entering the industry. “It’s not always easy being the only female in the room but if you are confident in yourself and work hard you can do anything. And never let anyone tell you that you can’t!”

Unwavering grit and collaboration have built the foundation for Alexis Hancock’s success. While it’s not always easy, she says the reward comes in the form of strong working relationships.
“At Trex, we work with a wide range of customers—from dealers to contractors—who all have very different needs and ways of doing business. While it can be complex to navigate, it’s also pushed me to become more adaptable in how I communicate and listen— really listen—with empathy,” she says.
As channel marketing manager with Trex, Hancock works with customer accounts across the Southeast to help strengthen their digital presence. This includes developing and launching local marketing campaigns, both digital and traditional, to boost brand awareness and drive conversions that will grow Trex’s market share. “My main role is to connect our national marketing efforts with local customers,” she explains.
Trex is the world’s #1 brand of sustainably made, wood-alternative decking, and residential deck railing, as well as a leader in high performance, lowmaintenance outdoor living products. Headquartered in Winchester, Virginia, the company has manufacturing facilities in Virginia, Nevada and a future site under construction in Little Rock, Arkansas. Trex employes more than
1,900 people worldwide and boasts the industry’s strongest distribution network with products sold through more than 6,700 retail outlets across six continents.
Before joining Trex, Hancock’s career started with State Electric Supply Company. “After completing my bachelor’s in marketing management, I signed on with State Electric as a marketing specialist. During my two years with the company, I earned my MBA before moving to Charlotte, North Carolina. I became a digital marketing specialist at an agency that focused on the manufacturing sector, and then a digital marketing manager for a manufacturer and marketer of I/O interconnect products.”
She says being a female within a male dominated industry has impacted her career—but in a good way.
“This industry has given me the chance to bring a unique perspective to clients, customers and colleagues. I spent years focused on learning and building my expertise so I could walk into any room and speak with confidence,” Hancock says. “That preparation has made a big difference and has helped me earn respect in spaces where I might have once felt like the odd one out.”
That same mindset reflects Hancock’s advice for other women in the industry. “Don’t be intimidated. Stand tall and speak with purpose. It won’t always be easy, but most things worth doing never are. Don’t hold back your opinions just because you’re outnumbered in the room. You deserve to take up just as much space as anyone else. Own that.”

ERIN BENNERFinding Solutions is Very Rewarding
Erin Benner, owner of Benner Deer Fencing Company. Erin Benner's journey to the fence industry was a winding one. After earning a degree in communication design, she started her career as a designer and art director for a major publishing house—formerly Rodale, now Hearst Communications. Media and technology were changing rapidly during the early 2000s, and this pushed her to adapt and grow her skill set for the next 15 years.
Her husband, Rob Benner, had extensive experience in installing deer fencing on the East Coast. This job quickly became a passion for him, as he explored innovative ways to improve existing deer fencing mechanisms. They decided to launch a business selling his fencing system online and Benner Deer Fence Company was born. Benner used her creative skills to build and design a company website over the next year, while also immersing herself in the industry. She visited job sites and sought education on deer fencing, the installation process and consumer needs.
Moving from publishing to deer fencing may seem like quite a jump, but Benner says the lessons she learned early in her career have helped their business in many ways. “My background in design, storytelling and branding gave me a diverse skill set. My time in publishing also taught me how to manage deadlines, adapt quickly and stay organized in a fast-paced
environment. I’ve never been afraid to dive into something new and figure it out as I go.”
Based in Pennsylvania, Benner says they are a small but dedicated company. “As a tightknit team, we handle everything from product development and field work to customer service calls. And while we operate primarily online, we also install fencing locally and test all our products. Over the last 10 years, we’ve grown our offerings and expanded our website – and we’re still growing.”
Benner oversees a wide range of responsibilities, from branding and website management to customer service and business development. “I create all of our digital content, manage our social media and marketing efforts, and personally communicate with many of our customers.”
Being a woman in this industry may seem intimidating to many, but this is not the case for Benner. “I think our customers appreciate the approachable, solution-focused voice of our brand, which is my voice in many aspects. I also think women are often natural problem-solvers and communicators.”
She says the best advice she ever received is, “‘Everything doesn’t have to be perfect—you can change it later. As a business owner juggling multiple responsibilities, I remind myself of this daily.”
While it may not be the career path she originally chose, it’s one she has fully embraced. “I love being able to help people solve problems. Every day, I talk with customers from all over the country who are dealing with problems –deer eating their landscaping, rodents in the garden, homeowners looking to create a safe space for their pet. Helping them find a solution is very rewarding.”

Stay Comfortable in Hot Weather with Dovetail Workwear for Women
As the summer heat intensifies, finding the right workwear becomes crucial for women working outdoors or in non-air-conditioned environments. The challenge is to maintain comfort, safety and style simultaneously. Dovetail Workwear is dedicated to creating durable and comfortable workwear specifically for women with a range of options designed to beat the heat on
Dovetail Workwear was created by women, for women, in 2018, when landscapers Kate Day and Kyle Marie Summers were tired of fighting their workwear while getting the job done. They teamed up with apparel developer Sara DeLuca to build something better—Dovetail Workwear, a brand dedicated to making seriously tough, dialed-in gear for women. Their clothing is now worn on farms, job sites, studios and beyond.
The team at Dovetail Workwear offers a guide to the best hot weather women's workwear:
LIGHTWEIGHT AND BREATHABLE FABRICS. The choice of fabric is pivotal. Dovetail Workwear offers garments made from lightweight, breathable fabrics that allow air circulation, helping to evaporate sweat and keep the body cool. Look for options in cotton, linen blends, or advanced synthetic materials that are designed to wick moisture away from the body. These fabrics not only offer comfort but are also durable enough to withstand the rigors of physical work.
FUNCTIONAL DESIGN FOR VENTILATION. Dovetail Workwear’s designs incorporate functional elements such as vented panels and mesh inserts in key areas like the back, underarms, and sides. These features are ingeniously integrated into work shirts, pants and overalls to maximize airflow and reduce body heat accumulation.
PRACTICAL FEATURES
Beyond the fabric and construction, the functionality of workwear plays a significant role in overall comfort. Dovetail Workwear designs its clothing with practical features that enhance convenience and comfort. Ample pockets,
gusseted crotches for ease of movement, tool loops and adjustable hems are just a few of the thoughtful details that make Dovetail's workwear both practical and comfortable for hot weather. These features include:
• Lighter moisture-wicking and quickdrying t-shirts and tanks
• Protective, yet cool work pants and shorts with multiple, ample pockets and tool loops
• Layering options: lightweight jackets, hoodies and vests
• Accessories for comfort and safety: breathable hats and work gloves

Lorri Evans OWNER, REDI DRIVER with
With a passion for solving problems and a knack for building strong industry relationships, Lorri Evans has become a recognized force behind the growth of REDI Driver. Her work has shaped the way contractors approach post-driving solutions, making their jobs faster, easier and more efficient. Fence News visited with Lorri about her career journey and where she hopes it takes her – and her company – next.
What’s your background? I was born and raised in Lewiston, Idaho. After graduating from high school, I took some business and accounting courses at the local state college. I started my first job at a local diner when I was just 15 years old. Shortly after getting married and moving to Alaska in 1984, I began working in the banking industry. My goal was to become a business banker. That was cut short when my husband, who is a second-generation fencer, started up his own fence company in 1988. We ran STAR Fence in Lewiston, Idaho for nearly 20 years. I was self-taught in all the aspects of specifications, bidding, estimating, and also worked out in the field. I came to know all things fence, which has proven to be very helpful when conversing with customers.
How did you become the owner of REDI Driver? REDI Driver was established in Nevada in 2012. We were searching the internet for a self-contained post driver for STAR Fence and came across a YouTube video which Christie Engineering in Australia had just released. Peter Christie was driving posts without any hoses or other equipment, just a small Honda engine on a post driver. They had just developed it and were starting to market it. We contacted them and inquired about perhaps becoming a dealer in the U.S. They thought about it for maybe 10 minutes and said we could have all North and South America as our territory. And just like that, REDI Driver came to be with one hopeful phone call to Australia.
Describe your growth with REDI Driver? REDI Driver was the first official gas-powered post driver to hit the market in the U.S.13 years ago. Since then, the market has changed and grown dramatically. Almost every gas-powered post driver originates from our original machine. I remember sending out emails, making cold calls and hitting the road for demonstrations. Most folks could not believe it, and we quickly learned if we could get REDI Driver in their hands, they would buy it! There was only one model at first, the REDIclassic52. We soon realized there was a need to drive more than just T-posts,so the REDIboss78 was developed, with a capacity to drive all post sizes up to 2 and 7/8 inches. From there, we developed the first handle extension kit for taller posts, along with other customized accessories. The latest addition to our post driver family is the all new MEGAmulti model, which is another game changer for the industry. This model touts the stronger HONDA gx50 engine, larger internals and cooling fins for a longer duty cycle. It will drive everything from T-posts, all the way up to Postmaster types of posts, without any confusing changes needed. Given our fence industry background, we understand the importance of simplicity when out in the field.
What do you handle on a day-to-day basis in your position? If you contact REDI Driver, you contact me! I enjoy personal interactions and strive to always provide the best service to our customers. My daily routine involves all aspects of REDI Driver. I process the orders, coordinate the shipping, communicate with vendors, answer phone and email inquiries, do marketing and
bookkeeping. I also help in the shop as needed and help brainstorm to bring visions to life and improve the customer experience with our machines.
Has being a woman in in this industry presented any obstacles? There are certainly times when my knowledge is doubted. I think it is a pleasant surprise for a customer, when I can “talk fence” to help them.
What sets REDI Driver apart from its competitors? Our personalized service sets us apart from our competitors. We have no phone prompts, no run-around. Decisions are made on the spot. Our warranty is also unique among competitors. It is a 3-year warranty on all postdriving components, versus the more common 1-year or less warranty. Our repair shop is also amazing and sets us apart. We generally have machines repaired and back to the customer on the same day it arrives here!
What has been your biggest challenge? The biggest challenge in the beginning was supply. Christie Engineering did not expect the rapid growth rate of REDI Driver. Supply also became our biggest win. We can fill orders the same day for 99 percent of all orders. I have learned so much about running a product-based business.
What do you enjoy most about your job? I enjoy watching the business grow and knowing it is because of the personal touch we put on everything. I also really enjoy sharing my knowledge with customers. The gas-powered
post-driver industry is so new and is totally revolutionary. It is saving folks time and money and keeps their bodies from breaking down. It is changing the way all things are driven, which has been an adventure to be part of. The process along the way and the success is very rewarding.
What are your goals for the company? We want to continue offering products that meet the changing needs of the industry. There are plans to release package deals that will include all you need for common fence building, and some specialized applications. There are plans to expand our online and video presence. We will continue to evolve to better serve our customers.
Did you have a role model or mentor in your career? My husband is the one who believed in me more than I believed in myself. I have grown to believe there are no limits to the possibilities.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? Do one thing and do it the best! Post drivers are all we do here at REDI Driver. I think spreading yourself too thin or having too many distractions takes its toll on a business.
Was there anything about the fence industry that surprised you? I did not expect the REDI Driver to be copied so many times. At first it was disheartening, but I came to realize that all the other models out there helped to legitimize the industry. I now know only great things are copied!
How do you stay motivated every day? Happy customers and their constant feedback are the best motivation. I find comfort in being organized and having a smooth-running company; I feel REDI Driver accomplishes that for me. And I look forward to the future of our industry and the changes along the way.
What advice would you give someone just entering this industry? Learn all you can about all your customers and their needs. You can only help if you are informed. Be open to change and learning that there is always more than one way to get something accomplished.

Deck Divider Launches New Website and Partnerships
The Deck Divider, a new spacing tool for decking and fencing, is now available on its newly launched website, thedeckdivider.com. This patent pending tool is said to reduce installation time by nearly 50% compared to traditional spacing tool methods.
Developed by Australian inventor and tradesman Mark Behnecke and building materials veteran Mike Kunard, they have partnered to form the U.S.based, The Deck Divider LLC. Jason “Dr. Decks” Russell was an early adopter of the system and is now a proud brand ambassador for The Deck Divider.
“The Deck Divider truly changes the time and accuracy it takes to layout decks whether you are using wood, composite, or PVC,” says Russell.
The deck divider works with grooved and square edged boards. For most grooved boards, the deck divider relieves the pressure on clip fastening systems. “I really appreciated this tool on a project that had multi-width boards
on it. Every gap was perfect, and we were super-efficient because of the Deck Divider,” says Russell.
The system is sold with two end clamps and five dividers built with ball bearings to be adjustable on an existing clamp. Simply secure the clamp ends onto a starter deck board and adjust the movable dividers between the deck boards. Tighten the hand clamp to pull the deck boards into the 5mm (3/16”) spacers and be ready to fasten deck boards down. Using six clamps will allow six boards 16’ long to be ready for installation in no time at all.
While the Deck Divider is shown in various demos with clamp bars, it is not included with the Deck Divider kit and is not sold by The Deck Divider company.

Deck Rebellion: Revolutionary Concepts for Outdoor Living
An Amazon #1 Hot New Release and Amazon Bestseller in Deck and Patio Building
Once considered nothing but a square add-on to the back of a house, decks have transformed into an additional living space, an entertainment space, a family space and much more. Founder and president of Deck Remodelers, Sean McAleer has compiled a stunning collection of his artistry and design of these outdoor spaces in his new book, Deck Rebellion: Revolutionary Concepts for Outdoor Living. It combines beautiful photos with personal accounts and Sean’s history with architecture.
“It starts with someone asking, ‘Can you do this?’ My answer is always, ‘If it’s possible, we’ll make it happen,’” says McAleer. Pools, kitchens, fans, fireplaces—these only scratch the surface of what he designs. He highlights the two most important steps when it comes to deck planning: cover the space, and then let the possibilities ride. He asks the important questions of what purpose a deck serves: How do they want to live in the space? What do they want to use it for? Entertaining? A private sanctuary? Do they have a wedding or another big event coming up? And of course, the kids. Are the
kids little? Teenagers? How does the family want to use the deck as their kids grow? What does the client want to highlight—the view?
As the most awarded builder in North America, McAleer is a revolutionary when it comes to deck design. Deck Remodelers has received over 70 NADRA (North American Deck and Railing Association) national design awards. He has redefined what a deck is and highlights the ways homeowners can use the space in an ever-changing world. Including McAleer’s top 10 award winners, this book reveals the eye of a craftsman and businessman. He goes into detail about the process of the design from start to finish, using distinct examples.
Deck Rebellion is a coffee table book that all artists and architects will appreciate. Deck Rebellion will inspire readers to maximize their deck’s potential.

Start-Up Stories
Success 140 Years in the Making Rosenbaum Fence Company
Those on the outside may think owning and growing a business is glamorous. They see the current building, the staff, the equipment and the profits. What they don’t see are the startups. The small beginnings, the ever-present worry, the dreams and the everyday decisions that can either make it or break it.
Fence News honors those who put their hat in the self-employment ring and built their business one small step at a time.
In the early 1880s, Adolph Rosenbaum left Germany in pursuit of work in America. His career started by installing tin roofs on the local shipyard. Adolph recognized other homeowners and business owners needed materials for their own repairs, and thus Rosenbaum Hardware was established.
Nearly 60 years later, Adolph’s grandson Donald inherited the business and continued working to grow it. However, as the business landscape changed following World War II, Rosenbaum Hardware ultimately closed, but Donald continued operating the company’s fence installation services. The door had closed on Rosenbaum Hardware, but a new one opened for Rosenbaum Fence Company.
Donald hired two fence installers and together they laid the groundwork for a growing business.
Donald went to local businesses, local governments, schools, residents, anywhere he could to generate leads. The team’s determination made it possible for Donlad to eventually hire his first salesman and ultimately more crews and equipment to complete more jobs.
Today, Rosenbaum Fence Company is the largest independent fence company on the Virginia Peninsula. The company remains in the family, now managed by Shawn Preston, the husband of Donald’s oldest granddaughter Elana.
“Our operation looks much different today and has more employees than our predecessors could have imagined, but we have remained true to our roots as a small mom and pop family owned and operated business,” says Shawn. “My grandfather always said 'he didn’t just hire employees, he adopted people.’ That’s still our philosophy today. We have fun and our workers are proud to wear their Rosenbaum shirts every day. We’re proud to have built a culture where people are happy to come to work.”
Rosenbaum Fence Company installs new fences, repairs damaged or old fences and sells fencing materials to anyone and everyone that needs them.
"We know what our customers expect when they buy a Rosenbaum fence, and we don’t shortchange them just to cut costs or focus on bigger projects. Every customer is treated like family, no matter how big or small the job is." – Elana Preston
Elana says this formula has worked for 140 years, and Rosenbaum Fence is sure it will continue to prove successful for the next 140.

Trex Takes on Real Life in New “Trex Vs” Ad Campaign
From high heels and skateboards to cartwheels and fish scales, the latest advertising campaign from Trex, the world’s #1 brand of composite decking and residential railing, highlights a new era of outdoor resilience. Aptly titled “Trex Vs,” the series of commercial spots and digital concepts showcases how the brand’s Performance-Engineered™ decking and railing enhance and stand up to everyday life.
Created by Nashville-based BUNTIN, the “Trex Vs” campaign introduces a new tagline for the brand – moving from “Engineering What’s Next in Outdoor Living™” to “Performance Engineered for Your Life Outdoors™” –and includes the first-ever broadcast work dedicated to promoting Trex railings. All of the creative concepts reinforce the message that no matter what life may throw at your deck, Trex products deliver durability, resilience and pristine beauty.
“Trex decking and railing are designed to not only beautify but to also support real life,” says Jodi Lee, senior vice president of marketing for Trex Company. “From birthday parties to sports practice, this new campaign gets to the heart of what differentiates Trex by showcasing how our products become an integral and trusted part of people’s lives and homes.”
Among the main commercials in the campaign is a spot titled “40th Birthday,” which shows how Trex decking and railing can withstand everything from dance moves and dropped burgers to the impact of popped champagne corks. In another, called “Regionals,” Trex railing serves as a practice balance beam for a young gymnast preparing for her next competition. Other creative concepts feature Trex decking and railings beautifully enduring the rolling and stopping of kids on skateboards; flailing hooks, splashing and flopping fish during an afternoon of angling; and the thrills (and spills) of a children’s tea party.
"With this next chapter of the Trex brand, we wanted to lean into realworld moments to showcase where the performance truly shines,” says Steve Chavez, EVP/managing partner, chief creative officer at BUNTIN. “These spots bring a fresh, bold energy to the brand proving that Trex isn’t just built to last – it’s built for life with all its unpredictability, excitement and celebrations.”
“Trex has always been a leader when it comes to performance innovation and this new ad campaign celebrates that legacy and the peace of mind our products offer to consumers,” adds Lee. “We’re excited for the world to see the real, battle-tested ability of our products to stand up to life’s moments – big and small.”
Now live, the omni-channel “Trex Vs” campaign includes broadcast, website, digital, and paid and organic social channels. For more information, visit Trex.com
Value Selling and Making a Profit!
by Tom Luby, owner of Profit Builders International
You have a skill set your customers need and a product line that is second to none, ALWAYS remember that! The Trump tariff policies have wreaked havoc in the fence industry these past few months, and everyone is on edge. What will happen with supply and prices? Who knows, but remember, either way, you need to make a fair profit for all of your diligent work, PERIOD!
Understanding the true value of what you do; the value of the products and services you deliver and the value of the knowledge and expertise you provide, is what it is all about. Understanding and accounting for true overhead costs and passing those expenses on to the customer while providing a decent living for everyone involved in your fence company is paramount. Don’t be the guy who waits until year’s end to see if they made enough money to pay their bills and find out what is left over for profit. This is the wrong approach and is a major problem in this industry. Do you see electricians or plumbers rushing to discount their products and services to gain market share? No. So why is the fencing industry so noted for doing just that? Is it the lower level entry requirements for fencing? Maybe to a degree, but more rigid control over the industry could help. Nowadays, too many people try to put a sign on a truck, buy a post hole digger, and all of a sudden, they think they are qualified, legitimate fencers? I don’t think so.
I have suggested maybe tighter licensing and regulating of who can legitimately be qualified to install fence as a possible solution. Maybe local legislators and/or organizations like the American Fence Association, both locally and nationally, can help in that regard?
I hope we can agree the only real way to make money in this industry is by selling profitable fence jobs. I am sure none of you need the practice, so you must be in the fence business to make money at it. But that is where the easy part ends and the difficult part of skilled salesmanship begins. The entire fence company revolves around your ability to sell fence jobs that earn enough money to pay the employees, pay the overhead and leave a fair profit for the owners.
The ability to sell ice to an Eskimo or sand in the Sahara have long been touted as examples of ultimate sales challenges, daunting tasks to be undertaken only by the most fearless, skillful and resourceful of salespeople. The fencing industry is not without similarly daunting sales challenges, isolated pockets and regions in the country where a particular style of fencing product seems as plentiful as sand in a desert or ice in the arctic and almost impossible to sell at a reasonable profit margin. But profit is not a dirty word and each sale must generate its share of profit. There are a number of sales tools and skill sets that can reinforce your sales efforts and make value selling more profitable for your company, but those are not easy to learn and even more difficult to teach and hone into a fine sales pitch. Not all members of your sales staff may have the ability or training at their disposal to handle the competitive sales pitch. Training is critical and finding the right person for the job is equally important. Without both, failure and lost opportunities often result, leading to loss of revenue, not a good thing in any business.
Many potential sales advantages hinge on management’s ability to understand the fence market in the area they service, and to find alternative ways to win the most profitable sales. If everyone and their brother are selling six foot vinyl privacy in your area for peanuts, find an alternative your competition is not easily able to duplicate. Your ability to “pick your fights” and concentrate your efforts on products and services that produce the highest profit margins in your market is a key to success.
Don’t bang your proverbial head against the wall fighting for pennies; find a better alternative. If everyone is selling coffee, sell gourmet mocha latte. It is kind of like learning how to dummy down your sales efforts; eliminating the tough sales pitches and replacing them with less competitive and more profitable opportunities. One such method for improving sales volumes and profit margins is learning, understanding and optimizing niche versus fragmented and overly competitive sales channels. Discovering a niche product for your market or niche sales channel is like taking the road less traveled. Find the product and/or service less frequently provided, and/or sales channels or opportunities not as apparent and obvious, and therefore not as competitive.
Also try thinking outside the box. Being a good listener to what your customers are asking for and having a creative and inventive point of view are key ingredients to moving from fragmented to niche market sales and much greater profits for the company.
Remember, the niche can be created from any customer demand, not just for a particular fence product demand, but for service, financing, perceived ancillary product value or even regional environmental nuances, like selling Saharan sand to the Eskimos to make cement for their homes, or selling the Eskimos’ ice to the Arabs to cool their drinks. You get the idea.
For more ideas on how to transform a fragmented market into a niche for your company, please do not hesitate to contact me personally. Over the past few decades, I have written many articles and even a few books about sales training tools to help improve your capture ratios and profit margins, and how to develop the very best sales opportunities.

Fence People, Heal Thy Selves!
by Mark Levin, CAE, CSP executive vice president, Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute | 2022 Inductee, American Fence Association Hall of Fame
Don’t worry, I am not getting biblical on you. That would really be a stretch for me, anyway. I just think that sometimes we overlook the importance of keeping ourselves - and our employees – physically and mentally healthy. The fence business can take a lot out of you. For our employees who work on jobsites or in production facilities, or who load and drive the vehicles we use, or who work in a lean and fast-moving office environment supporting our field and factory operations, there are plenty of daily challenges just to keep up with everything. Of course, the physical part of these jobs puts wear and tear on people’s bodies, and the stress of deadlines and profits and performance measurements adds to the mental wear and tear for everyone. We have spent decades trying to move our industry’s image from one of fence installers and manufacturers, to one of problem-solvers for our customers. We need to remember to be problem-solvers for our employees and ourselves too.
Physical Healing
The fence industry is widely known for its commitment to creating safe working conditions. We provide safety training for everyone in our companies and work closely with safety professionals to adhere to safety guidelines. But who is watching out for those field or shop workers trying to earn extra money through overtime in a job that requires heavy lifting and using dangerous machinery?”
Here are some things you can do to help keep your employees – and yourself, physically healthy.
1. Go back and offer (or refresh) training on safe lifting techniques and effective sitting/posture techniques. Studies show that construction workers, warehouse workers and drivers have the greatest risk for back problems. In addition to the pain and lost time this causes, the expense to your company can be among your highest insurance costs.
2. Where possible, rotate jobs to avoid the injuries repetitive tasks can cause.
3. Offer some onsite health support, such as flu shots, blood pressure readings and vision testing.
4. Keep workplaces clean and clear of obstacles, and evaluate air quality and noise levels regularly.
5. Take another look at your snack machines, break room offerings and the food trucks that service your plant, office and job sites. Maybe add some more nutritious alternatives. Poor nutrition leads to dozens of other health problems and associated costs.
As executive vice president of Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute for 38+ years, Mark Levin is also an author and avid promoter of the fence industry. He believes in the successful leadership qualities he promotes, including listening, delegating, consensus building, communications and effective decision-making.

Mental Healing
Okay, I have to admit the fence industry has come a long way in the past 20 years in recognition of the need to deal with the mental, as well as physical, health of its workers at every level. We are past the days when we were in denial about mental health problems being an issue at all, or something that was just not discussed. Also, although I do not want to sound like I am materialistic about everything, mental health issues cost the construction industry nearly $1billion a year in absenteeism, productivity and accidents. In the manufacturing segment, employees with mental health problems cost employers more than two and a half times as much in healthcare costs than employees without those problems.
Here are some ways you can keep your employees – and yourself – mentally healthy.
1. Make sure supervisors and human resource personnel are trained to identify the symptoms of mental health and related issues (stress, drug/ alcohol abuse, etc.)
2. Let your employees know there are people they can talk to and that privacy and confidentiality are guaranteed.
3. Offer mental health assistance as part of your company’s health insurance package.
4. Implement – and enforce – a no-tolerance policy for harassment of any kind, so employees with mental health issues are not afraid to seek assistance.
5. Be sure to acknowledge/reward the achievements of employees whenever and wherever possible, to relieve some of the pressure of work-related stress.
PLEASE remember, this article about dealing with physical and mental health issues, and the toll they take on employees (and your bottom line). It is not just about the other people in your company. It is also about you, and your company’s management and ownership teams.
Let’s make a healthy work environment a trademark of every part of the fence industry.

The 95% That Matters Most
by Michael Reed executive director, American Fence Association
The local diner where I have breakfast has a variety of coffee mugs they have collected over the years. Part of the fun is seeing which one you’ll get. The one this morning had a saying on it.
Life is 5% what happens to you, and 95% how you react to it.
In leadership, especially in the fence industry where competition is fierce, weather is unpredictable and labor is tight, this perspective isn’t just helpful—it’s essential.
Every day, things happen we can’t control. Material shipments get delayed. Crews call out. Key production machines go offline and require repair. Customers change their minds midproject. None of this is new. What separates the average leader from the exceptional one is not whether these things happen, it’s what they do next
That’s the 95%
Positive reaction doesn’t mean ignoring reality. It means facing it with creative thinking. When a team is short-handed, a strong leader asks, How do I help the team focus on what matters most today? When the market shifts, they ask, What opportunities does this open that weren’t visible before? When a customer is frustrated, they respond with empathy, not ego.
Not Reactive, but Responsive.
That’s creative leadership. It’s not reactive, it’s responsive. It doesn’t mean being passive or blindly optimistic. It means choosing action that moves the business forward with intention, energy, and purpose.
In a way, leadership is less about control and more about creativity. And in that space between what happens and how we respond, we have more power than we think.
So next time the day doesn’t go according to plan, ask yourself: What will I do with the 95% that’s mine to control?
Then go and lead!
Great leaders don’t waste energy blaming conditions. They don’t fixate on what’s broken or out of reach. Instead, they take responsibility for what is in their control: their mindset, their tone, their creativity, their ability to find solutions when others get stuck in the problem.
One contractor recently told me, “The more curveballs I get, the more I know I’m doing something important.” That struck me. It wasn’t bravado—it was resilience. He knew that setbacks are part of the story, not the end of it.
And in our industry, that’s more than just a leadership trait. It’s a competitive advantage. Because when your crew sees you staying calm and adaptive, they don’t panic—they follow. When your customer sees you navigating a challenge without losing your professionalism, their trust grows. When your peers see you turn a disruption into a new idea, they don’t just admire you, they’re inspired by you.
Unexpected Situations Will Happen
We’re all going to face the 5%, the uncontrollable, the unexpected, the inconvenient. But how we handle the 95%, the tone we set, the choices we make, the story we tell about the moment—that’s where a leader’s legacy is built.

DuxxBak Composite Decking Now Available Nationwide through Lowe’s Online
DuxxBak® Composite Decking has announced a major milestone in its nationwide growth: the entire DuxxBak product line is now available to customers across the United States through Lowe’s® online store. This expansion—driven by the strategic partnership between DuxxBak and AmeriLux International—brings full access to DuxxBak’s portfolio of highperformance, eco-engineered decking solutions to homeowners, contractors, and pros from coast to coast.
“This moment is the culmination of over a year’s work,” says Eddie Holzem, vice president of sales and marketing for DuxxBak. “To now have every product in our lineup—DuxxBak Dekk, I.Dekk, I.Dekk HD, Optima Dekk, Optima Dekk LT, and Commercial Dekk—available nationwide through Lowes.com is a significant step forward in our mission to make premium decking more accessible to every customer.” Holzem adds, “This achievement simply wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication, hustle, and behind-the-scenes coordination of the AmeriLux team. Their partnership has been instrumental every step of the way, proof of what’s possible when both teams are aligned and committed to delivering something great.”
Unlike traditional composite decking, DuxxBak products are engineered with proprietary, moisture-resistant composite technology that defies rot,
mold, and decay. The flagship DuxxBak Dekk features a patented interlocking profile that sheds water without the need for underdeck drainage systems, while other profiles like I.Dekk HD and Commercial Dekk are built for long spans and high-traffic durability. All products are made in the USA, backed by a lifetime limited warranty, and designed to perform in even the harshest conditions.
“This rollout reflects the strength and momentum of our partnership with DuxxBak,” says Matt Balzola, vice president of sales at AmeriLux International. “Our role as master distributor has always been about delivering marketready solutions efficiently. Now, contractors and homeowners can access the full range of DuxxBak products through Lowe’s online platform, making it easier than ever to build with a best-in-class composite decking solution.”
This announcement builds on the August 2024 launch of AmeriLux as DuxxBak’s master distributor, which laid the foundation for this full-scale rollout. Since then, the companies have optimized logistics, expanded marketing assets, trained retail teams and added enhanced content to Lowes. com, including product selectors, installation videos, 360° product imagery, and updated technical documents.

BuzzCaps Makes Outdoor Living Beautiful and Bug-Free
BuzzCaps is a family-owned and family-operated company based in Kennebunk, Maine, founded on a simple yet powerful idea: to make outdoor spaces safer, more inviting, and beautifully illuminated—while offering a smart solution to the ongoing nuisance of mosquitoes. Recognizing the need for a pet and child-safe alternative to traditional open-flame torches, the company has developed an innovative fence topper that securely holds citronella torches. These toppers not only deter mosquitoes but also add a refined aesthetic to backyard settings.

BuzzCaps is more than just a functional product. It represents a new way to experience outdoor living. The brand is built around the idea of creating memorable moments: relaxed evenings on the deck, joyful gatherings with friends, and the comforting glow of a backyard that feels like an extension of the home. “We know how much thought and care people put into their homes,” says John Pierson, founder of the company, “BuzzCaps is designed to honor that by blending beauty, function, and safety into something that complements—not competes with—your outdoor space.”
A strong sense of community has also been integral to the company’s growth. BuzzCaps has built relationships with fence manufacturers and installers who share a dedication to quality and craftsmanship. These partnerships have not only enhanced the product but also reinforced the company’s mission to deliver thoughtful, reliable outdoor solutions to people across the country.
Pierson says with BuzzCaps, it’s not just about lighting up your backyard—it’s about transforming an environment. “It’s about gathering with loved ones, enjoying warm summer nights, and reclaiming your outdoor space. Fiberon Composite Decking Earns Green GOOD DESIGN® Award
Demonstrative of the company’s commitment to sustainable manufacturing and design, Fiberon was recently recognized with a Green GOOD DESIGN® Award for its Astir Collection of Concordia polyethylene (PE) composite decking.
“It’s an honor being recognized with this achievement,” says Kate Haws, director of brand communications. “Since our founding in 1997, we’ve made a point to create products that customers know are a good choice for their family, their home and the environment.”
Presented annually by The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design, the Green GOOD DESIGN award program “identifies and emphasizes the world’s most important examples of sustainable design.”
Concordia is a premium composite decking line made with 94% recycled material that would otherwise be destined for landfills, incinerators, or oceans. About half of what’s in the decking boards comes from recycled wood—sawdust and leftover material that would otherwise be discarded. The other half comes from recycled plastic, including grocery bags and recycled packaging material. Fiberon recycles these woods and plastics at an in-house facility that converts the waste into the materials needed to make new deck boards. The facility prevents more than 70,000 tons of waste from reaching landfills and incinerators annually. By using recycled materials, Fiberon saves more than 1 million trees—or 20,000 acres of healthy forest—from being cut down every year.
The company’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond the product design. Every Fiberon plant has a water reservoir about the size of a standard swimming pool to collect and reuse water during the manufacturing process.

Ewan Kennedy is leading the restoration of Scotland’s ancient peatlands – while also training the next generation to protect them.
In the remote Highlands of Scotland, where the mountains rise from mossy bogs and silence has a depth of its own, Ewan Kennedy is hard at work. His goal? Not to tame the land, but to restore it – to revive Scotland’s ancient peatlands while helping young people build futures where their roots already lie. It’s a mission that blends environmental urgency with personal conviction. And for Ewan, managing director of Stag Infrastructure, it’s about more than just good business. “I’m from here,” he says. “And I want to build something lasting – something that lives on in both the landscape and the people who belong to it.”
A MISSION IN THE MOSS
The word peatlands often conjures images of soggy wilderness – wet, bleak, and inhospitable. In reality, these landscapes are alive with colour and texture: deep copper and green mosses, mirror-like pools, and wildflowers clinging to ancient soil. Formed over 10,000 years ago, after the last Ice Age, they are among Europe's oldest living landscapes. They are also one of the planet’s most powerful natural allies, storing more carbon per hectare than forests, regulating water, and providing a home for countless species. These vast plains have outlasted civilisations – and now, they need protecting more than ever.
In Scotland, more than 60% have been damaged – drained, dried, and degraded over decades. The result is both environmental and existential: a vital ecosystem turned from sink to source, quietly releasing carbon into the atmosphere. Ewan and his team are leading the efforts to reverse that damage, restoring the land by hand and machine to bring it back to health.
“This is about long-term thinking,” he explains. “If we do this right, we’re not just protecting nature – we’re protecting our future. The work that we’re doing here today will make a difference for my
The Man Who Listens to the Land
children, their children, and generations ahead”.
That future comes in many forms. Reviving the peatland will help meet Scotland’s climate targets; while also creating stable, skilled jobs in an area that has long seen its young people leave for better opportunities elsewhere. “The land matters – but so do the lives rooted in it,” Ewan says. “This is about community as much as conservation.”
MACHINES THAT PROTECT RATHER THAN DISRUPT
Restoring peatlands is a delicate job. One wrong move can cause further damage, so the machinery used must be efficient, reliable, and light on the land. For Ewan, Yanmar’s compact equipment was the obvious choice. Working with Chris Knight, Yanmar’s main dealer for Scotland, he selected the ViO80 mini excavator and C30R3 tracked carrier, both adapted for low ground pressure and minimal disturbance. “It’s not like working on a building site,” Ewan says. “You’re on saturated ground, kilometres from the road, trying not to leave a trace. These machines give us the performance we need without the footprint.”
Key modifications included an extended reach arm, added counterweight, and refuelling systems designed to prevent diesel spills. “There’s no room for error out here,” he continues. “You are hours from support, so the kit has to work – safely and sustainably.”
BRINGING OPPORTUNITY BACK HOME
But for Ewan, the restoration work is as much about people as peat. Born and raised in the Highlands, he’s witnessed the slow erosion of local opportunity. “There’s a generation gap now,” he says. “Too many young people leave because they don’t see a future here.”
Stag Infrastructure is helping change that narrative – creating full-time jobs and running pilot training in peatland restoration to offer young people a future close to home. “We want to show that you can stay here, learn valuable skills,
and build something that matters,” says Ewan. “It’s about helping people see a future for themselves in this place.”
This philosophy echoes Yanmar’s Hanasaka value – an ethos of nurturing potential and helping people and places thrive. And through the Yanmar Green Challenge 2050, which sets out to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions and a fully circular resource society, the company is not only supporting this mission – it’s learning from it. It brings to life Yanmar Compact Equipment’s promise: Building with You, supporting the people shaping a better tomorrow, from the Highlands to the world stage.
A LEGACY BENEATH OUR FEET
Restoring peatlands is not glamorous. It involves mud, patience, long days in unpredictable weather – and a willingness to think decades ahead. But for Ewan Kennedy, it’s a calling. “It’s not about being the biggest or fastest,” he says. “It’s about doing the right thing. I want to leave behind something I can be proud of – and I want the people around me to feel proud too.”
In places where the ground has quietly recorded thousands of years of history, Ewan Kennedy is writing a new chapter – one of revival, resilience, and respect. He shows that even the quietest work can echo for generations – especially when backed by the right tools, the right mindset, and a belief in building something better.

Wood Defender Adds TrendForward Colors to 200 Series for Summer 2025
Wood Defender is expanding its fast-curing 200 Series with two timely additions that bring a more modern edge to outdoor wood staining. For summer 2025, Desert Sand and Cape Cod Gray—two standout colors from the fence stain lineup—are now available in the 200 Series, formulated specifically for horizontal surfaces like decks, arbors, siding and more.
While both colors have gained traction in the fence staining world, this is their first appearance in a formula designed for broader application. With its deep-penetrating oil base and fast-curing technology, the 200 Series helps contractors deliver professional results with greater efficiency on surface types that demand a different kind of performance.
Desert Sand is a sun-washed neutral with warm, yellow undertones that pairs beautifully with stone, stucco, and xeriscaped outdoor spaces. Its soft presence works especially well in Southwestern and transitional designs. Cape Cod Gray brings cool contrast to the lineup with a clean, coastal-inspired tone. It’s a favorite among homeowners seeking something less expected than brown, while still achieving a classic, polished finish.
Swatches are courtesy of Wood Defender.
Photo courtesy of Pristine Clean Exteriors.
Engineered specifically for horizontal wood, the 200 Series delivers consistent coverage and a faster dry time that allows contractors to stay productive across jobs. It’s a smart solution for professionals staining structures other than fence, without complicating their workflow.
“These aren’t just color extensions; they’re a strategic part of our seasonal testing initiative,” says Laurel McEuen, director of marketing. “We’re meeting growing interest in trend-forward tones and watching how they perform across broader project types.”
Released as part of the 2025 Seasonal Color Campaign, both Desert Sand and Cape Cod Gray are available in limited quantities. The goal: respond to evolving design preferences while gauging long-term demand for future product expansion.
Contractors looking to expand their color offering or streamline material choices across surfaces can get a first look through their Wood Defender or their dealer. Early orders are encouraged.
Whether you're refreshing a fence or finishing out a deck, these two colors help bring a more contemporary, cohesive look to exterior wood—delivered with the jobsite efficiency and product performance Wood Defender is known for.

Summer Security Starts at the Gate: Why Smart Operators Are Gaining Ground
As summer travel plans ramp up, more homeowners are thinking beyond the basics when it comes to home security. It’s a timely season to reassess how well a property is protected–especially at its outermost edges.
From smart cameras to video doorbells, much of the focus in home security has traditionally centered on the front entry. But as more homeowners look to secure their entire property—especially during peak travel months—attention is shifting outward to fences, driveways, and gated access points. It’s a broader view of home protection that’s bringing products like the Juno Slide Gate Operator from Nice into sharper focus.
Designed for residential slide gates up to 1,000 pounds and 30 feet in length, Juno brings professional-grade strength to the residential market. Yet it’s more than just muscle—it’s also smart. With integrated connectivity features, homeowners can monitor and control access remotely, receive status updates, and automate gate operations whether they’re home, at work, or thousands of miles away on vacation.
And with summer travel creating more opportunities for unattended properties, that remote visibility is a must.
“Gate operators used to be thought of as purely mechanical devices, but today they’re an essential part of the smart security stack,” says Jeremy Brummels, vice president of sales at Nice North America. “With Juno, we’ve delivered a product that offers professional-grade performance in a compact footprint, while also meeting modern expectations for connectivity, control, and reliability at the perimeter.”
Built with a brushless DC motor, Juno operates smoothly and quietly—an important feature for residential settings. An integrated battery backup ensures continuous operation during power outages, while advanced obstruction detection adds another layer of safety. The unit is also weather-rated to perform in extreme temperatures and harsh conditions, making it a year-round solution. Its low-profile, modern design also makes it an attractive option for homeowners who want their security systems to be discreet and aesthetically aligned with their property.
As homeowners increasingly seek to automate and secure every corner of their property, installers are responding with solutions that combine mechanical reliability and digital intelligence. Gate operators like Juno are no longer just about access—they’re about peace of mind.
Whether protecting a long driveway, securing access to a vacation home, or simply adding smart functionality to a traditional gate system, Juno offers a seasonal reminder that smart security starts well before someone reaches the front door.
