DoorBird Showcases Innovation at Recent Trade Shows

BAU 2025 in Munich

Over 180,000 visitors attended the world's leading trade fair for architecture, materials and systems in mid-January to find out about innovations and trends in the construction industry from the 2,230 exhibitors from 58 countries.

The DoorBird display gave visitors the opportunity to experience proven door communication solutions and the latest products from the provider with headquarters and production in Berlin, Germany. DoorBird presented the D31TDH and D31TDV IP video door stations - smart solutions for multiapartments buildings and commercial properties with up to 1,000 units. Visitors to the stand, around 30% of whom came from the DACH region and 70% from abroad, were not only impressed by the flexible access control options via PIN code, QR code, RFID and Bluetooth, but also by the responsiveness of the 7-inch touch display. Another highlight was the presentation of the A1131 IP video mini dome camera. Mounted on the wall or ceiling, it provides an additional viewing angle of the entrance area.

However, it was not only technical innovations that attracted a wide audience, DoorBird also came up with innovations in terms of design. For example, powder-coated surfaces with a Corten steel look were presented - in line with the ongoing trend of industrial design, as well as a new Italian design that blends particularly harmoniously into the installation environments of old buildings.

"In line with our slogan, 'Technology Meets Design', we offer the right technical and visual solution for a wide range of requirements. With this wide range of products, we were once again able to make many important contacts at this year's BAU and already initiate exciting projects," says Klaus Dahlfeld, director of sales at DoorBird, enthusiastically summarizing the trade fair appearance. "Bau 2025 was the successful start to an exciting trade fair year. We look forward to exchanging ideas with partners, customers and interested parties at many more events and presenting new products."

ISE 2025 in Barcelona

ISE (integrated systems Europe), the annual meeting place for the audiovisual and systems integration industry, took place last month. DoorBird attended to present the company’s latest innovations, including the IP video door stations of the new D31 series, available as horizontal (D31TDH) and vertical (D31TDV) versions, DoorBird has once again expanded its portfolio in multi-apartment buildings and commercial properties. The two models set new technical standards: up to 1,000 remotely manageable units, a responsive 7-inch touch display and various access control options using a virtual keypad, RFID and QR code reader as well as Bluetooth offer an enormous degree of flexibility and convenience. As with all DoorBird door communication products, the D31x series can be easily integrated into common access and building automation systems via the well-documented API. In addition, customers can choose from over 50 different high-quality materials and finishes to suit the entrance situation.

Another new product exhibited was the A1131 IP video mini dome camera. The compact additional camera, which can be mounted on the ceiling or wall, offers a high-resolution view of the entrance area thanks to the Full HD Sony image sensor, thus providing additional security and an extra viewing angle.

"The vision of ISE is to make technology more accessible and efficient for everyday life," says Sascha Keller, CEO of DoorBird. "Our smart access control solutions, which can be individually adapted to the needs of users, fit in perfectly with this and we are looking forward to presenting them to visitors to the trade fair."

Nice Announces Juno: The Compact Powerhouse for Residential Gate Operations

Empowering the fence industry with a modern, sleek gate operator that combines power and first-to-market features for the modern customer, Nice, a global leader in home and building management solutions, has launched Juno, a sleek and powerful gate operator designed to redefine residential gate automation. As the market increasingly demands compact yet feature-rich solutions, Juno offers a breakthrough design that blends style, performance, and ease of use, delivering unparalleled value for both installers and end users.

“Our partners need reliable, easy-to-install solutions that align with modern aesthetic and functional demands,” says Lisa Steinberg, senior product manager at Nice North America. “With Juno, we’re providing a revolutionary product that not only performs exceptionally but also elevates the standard for gate operators in residential applications.”

Juno features a compact and modern design inspired by European aesthetics but tailored for the North American market, challenging the notion that effective gate operators need to be bulky to be powerful. Its 17.2-inch width and 16-inch depth dimensions can operate up to 800-pound gates that are 40-feet long. Its industry first, integrated driveway light illuminates the driveway during gate activation, enhancing safety and convenience. The intuitive status indicator provides real-time updates, with green signaling opening, red indicating closure, and rapid flashing alerting users to errors. The photo eye safety device is internally mounted, offering greater reliability and protection compared to traditional externally mounted systems. In the event of power loss, Juno’s manual release ensures uninterrupted access. Additionally, the operator’s built-in slow-down feature minimizes wear and tear, delivering durability and whisper-quiet performance. At its core is the Mercury 310 controller, designed for fast and easy programming, enabling installers to complete setups efficiently, saving time and resources. The Juno system runs on a 12VDC battery with battery charger and MPPT solar controller built into the control board providing flexible AC or solar power options.

Juno was developed to meet the needs of the gate automation industry

with a focus on reliability, ease of installation, and long-term performance. Installers can benefit from its quick setup and included accessories, complete with a receiver, two remotes and required safety devices, making it possible to complete more installations and service more customers, while end-users enjoy a stylish, durable, and low-maintenance solution. Juno is designed to meet the demands of luxury clients while challenging the perception that sleek, modern designs compromise functionality.

Juno brings the popular European product to be manufactured in and available to the U.S. market. With innovative design and robust engineering, Juno is poised to capture a significant market share in the slide gate operator segment, offering a competitive edge with its unique features and affordability.

Nice partners can order the Juno gate operator through their local distributor. Learn more at niceforyou.com

PVC FENCING & COMPOSITE

Vinyl and composite materials for fence and decking continue to reshape the industry, offering long-lasting solutions that combine strength with aesthetic appeal. In this section, we explore the latest innovations, installation techniques, and market trends driving demand for these materials. Whether you're a contractor, supplier, or designer, discover how to enhance your projects with durability and style.

Hybrid Fencing: The Future of Durable and Aesthetic Boundaries

The fencing industry has seen a steady evolution in materials and design, with homeowners and commercial property owners increasingly seeking solutions that balance durability, aesthetics, and cost-effectiveness. One emerging trend is hybrid fencing, or as the team at Poly Vinyl Creations, Inc. have called it for quite some time, KontrastTM. This concept combines two or more materials— such as vinyl and aluminum, wood and composite, steel and PVC or any other combination of materials —to optimize performance and visual appeal.

Poly Vinyl Creations is one of the leading manufacturers and distributors in the Southeast United States, specializing in specialty outdoor products.

WHY HYBRID FENCING?

Traditionally, fences have been constructed from a single material—wood for its natural charm, aluminum for its sleek modernity, or vinyl for its low maintenance. However, no single material is without its drawbacks. By combining materials either between panels and gates or in the actual design of the fence itself (rails and posts of one material and infill of another for example), manufacturers and installers can mitigate the weaknesses of one material while enhancing the strengths of another.

Jessica Burton, owner of Poly Vinyl Creations, Inc., explains, “We’ve been successfully integrating different materials under our KontrastTM concept for years, offering clients the best of both worlds when it comes to fencing solutions. The key is to understand which materials work well together and how to engineer them for longevity and strength. One example is pictured

here where we utilized our stone variegated post and rails with aluminum powder coated pickets for this coastal application.”

She outlines other examples:

Vinyl and Aluminum: Pairing vinyl with aluminum creates a fence that has the elegance and strength of aluminum while leveraging vinyl’s resistance to moisture and rot. This results in a low-maintenance fence that stands strongly against the elements while offering diverse style options.

Steel and Composite: This pairing is ideal for high-security applications. Steel adds unmatched strength, while composite provides a modern, maintenancefree aesthetic that resists fading and cracking.

Wood and Metal: Industrial yet stylish, this combination provides the warmth of natural wood with the resilience of steel or aluminum, ideal for contemporary and rustic designs alike.

Wood and Vinyl: Many property owners love the look of natural wood but dislike the upkeep. A wood and vinyl hybrid fence—where wood serves as the primary structural component while vinyl is used for protective or aesthetic elements—provides a balance of natural beauty and enhanced durability without the extensive maintenance requirements of traditional wood fencing. Chainlink and Vinyl: There’s opportunities to mix traditional chainlink with vinyl privacy in order to provide the aesthetic appeal of vinyl with the security of chainlink in commercial and industrial applications.

TECHNICAL PROS AND CONS OF HYBRID FENCING

The team at Poly Vinyl Creations have the background to highlight the pros and cons of hybrid fencing, along with solutions for any potential problems.

Pros

Enhanced Durability: By combining materials, hybrid fences can withstand extreme weather conditions, resist corrosion, and maintain structural integrity longer than single-material fences.

Low Maintenance: Certain materials, such as vinyl and composite, require minimal upkeep. By integrating them with traditional materials, property owners reduce long-term maintenance costs.

Aesthetic Versatility: Hybrid fences allow for creative designs that blend seamlessly with different architectural styles, offering both functionality, color options and curb appeal.

Cost Efficiency: While premium materials can be expensive, strategic use of hybrids allows for cost savings without sacrificing quality.

Sustainability: Many hybrid options incorporate recycled materials, reducing environmental impact and meeting eco-conscious consumer demands.

Cons & Solutions

Material Compatibility Issues: Different materials expand and contract at different rates, which can lead to structural weaknesses over time.

Solution: Use engineered connectors and flexible joint designs to allow for material movement without compromising stability.

Installation Complexity: Hybrid fencing requires specialized knowledge to seamlessly blend different materials while ensuring structural stability.

Solution: Work with experienced manufacturers, distributors, and installers who understand hybrid fencing engineering and best practices.

Initial Cost: Some hybrid designs may initially cost more due to the premium materials used.

Solution: Educate customers on the long-term savings in maintenance and replacement costs, emphasizing durability and performance.

Corrosion and Weather Resistance: Mixing metals with other materials can lead to corrosion if not properly treated.

Solution: Use powder-coated or galvanized metals and protective barriers to minimize degradation.

THE FUTURE OF HYBRID FENCING

As the fencing industry embraces innovation, Burton expects hybrid fencing—or Poly Vinyl Creation’s Kontrast™—to continue to gain traction. “With advancements in composite materials, powder coatings, and modular fencing systems, the possibilities for combining different elements are expanding. Contractors and manufacturers who adopt hybrid solutions can cater to evolving consumer preferences while offering fencing systems that stand the test of time.”

She adds, “Innovation in fencing means thinking beyond traditional materials. Our Kontrast™ systems are designed to provide longevity, strength, and aesthetics without compromise. The industry is moving toward smarter, more efficient solutions, and hybrid fencing is leading the way. Additionally, offering Kontrast™ allows contractors to further set themselves apart from the competition and create unique solutions for homeowners, contractors and other end users alike based on various needs related to security, beauty and durability. The possibilities are truly endless with these hybrid fence designs.”

The fusion of materials in fencing is more than just a trend for Poly Vinyl Creations. Burton says it’s a strategic evolution toward stronger, more visually appealing, and longer-lasting solutions. “Whether for residential, commercial, or industrial applications, hybrid fencing is reshaping the industry and setting new standards for performance and design.”

With a commitment to excellence and innovation, Poly Vinyl Creations has been at the forefront of the industry since 1996, providing high-quality products and services to its customers. Learn more at polyvinylc.com.

WILL VINYL FENCING YELLOW?

Today’s quality vinyl fencing contains titanium dioxide (TIO2) which prevents ultraviolet degradation. In fact, American Fence Company has partnered with Kroy Vinyl Products in warrantying our product for 20 years against premature discoloring and yellowing.

WILL VINYL FENCING BREAK IN HOT OR COLD WEATHER?

As with most plastics, vinyl will become less flexible in colder weather conditions. However, unless subjected to unusual impact, it will not break. It is normal for vinyl fence materials to expand and contract during temperature changes. Extruded right here in the Midwest, Kroy Vinyl products have been engineered to accommodate extreme changes in weather conditions.

WILL VINYL BURN?

PVC has a flash point of approximately 900 degrees and does not easily ignite. Vinyl is classified “Self-Extinguishing.”

HOW STRONG IS VINYL?

Unlike wood or metal fencing, vinyl fencing has a certain amount of flexibility. However, the materials are engineered to be impact resistant with a chemical formulation that will withstand a wide range of normal use. From a 12-year-old’s wild fast ball to a jumping pet’s attempt to escape the yard, your vinyl fence will hold-up to the challenge.

Overcoming Unfounded VINYL FENCE FEARS

Vinyl fencing has been around for well over 20 years, and its popularity has grown exponentially. Yet, there are still many property owners and contractors who remain hesitant to accept the product as a viable alternative to other fencing materials, especially those that are more prone to rot or rust.

Todd LaVigne, owner/CEO of American Fence Company, explains that the base ingredient in vinyl fencing is rigid PVC (polyvinyl chloride) Homopolymer compound with a high level of Titanium Dioxide pigment for long term, ultraviolet (UV) light resistance and impact modifiers for superior strength. “The formulation is similar to that of vinyl siding and windows which have long term durability and structural integrity. Modern, premium vinyl material like we use has improved tremendously since it was first introduced and is an excellent, long-term choice for fencing.”

LaVigne provides the answers to some of the most common questions and misconceptions he and his team hear about vinyl fencing:

HOW LONG WILL VINYL FENCE LAST?

On this note, this is where vinyl fencing stands apart from many other types of fencing. Vinyl fencing will last a lifetime. You may see the fence lose a little sheen after many years.

IS VINYL FENCING MAINTENANCE FREE?

Vinyl fencing requires very little maintenance. Under normal conditions, this maintenance is in the form of annual washing with a garden hose and wash cloth.

CAN VINYL FENCE BREAK?

Vinyl fencing can break if subjected to a direct impact, i.e. a rock thrown from a mower. Under normal use, a vinyl fence will not break when installed properly. Planks, pickets and rails are easily replaced if damaged.

WILL VINYL FENCE FADE?

Like vinyl siding and windows, vinyl fencing will lose a little of its sheen overtime, however, it will not fade. Today’s vinyl fencing has a chemical formulation similar to sunscreen. It is designed to permanently reflect the sun’s rays and hold its colors.

WILL VINYL FENCE CRACK, CHIP, PEEL OR ROT?

During the life of the fence, you should not expect to find surface cracking, peeling, chipping or rot. Vinyl fencing has a hard outer shell that protects it from the sun and holds its color. The inner shell is a softer compound that prevents cracking, chipping and peeling.

IS VINYL FENCING MORE EXPENSIVE THAN WOOD AND ORNAMENTAL FENCING?

The cost of vinyl fencing is a little more than wood and a little less than ornamental. However, when you consider that you will have to replace your wood fence in time, vinyl fencing is the more economical choice. As vinyl fencing grows in popularity, there are more extruders providing a wider range of products. This has kept the market competitive and prices stable. The gap in pricing from wood fencing to vinyl fencing is slowly shrinking.

When it comes to the products we purchase for our homes and families, trust means everything. With that in mind, Trex Company, the world’s largest manufacturer of wood-alternative composite decking and residential railing, and leader in high-performance, low-maintenance outdoor living products, is proud to share that it has been named 2025 America’s Most Trusted® Outdoor Decking, according to a nationwide study conducted by Lifestory Research. This is the fifth year in a row the company has received this recognition.

“We feel extremely proud and humbled to have once again earned this prestigious honor,” says Adam Zambanini, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Trex Company. “Trex has worked hard over the past three decades to build a legacy of trust with our customers by consistently delivering industry leading products and an unwavering commitment to service and sustainability. That makes this type of accolade especially meaningful because it goes beyond product performance and reflects how our brand and products make consumers feel – both during the purchase process and over time.”

For more than a decade, the America’s Most Trusted study has gathered and evaluated insights from consumers regarding the significance of trust on their purchasing behavior. Over the years, the study has evolved to examine trust across more than 75 product categories related to housing. This year’s rankings were determined by input from nearly 4,000 Americans surveyed by Lifestory Research over the course of a 12-month period.

For the fifth consecutive year, Trex earned the highest trust rating among

Trex

Named “America’s Most Trusted® Outdoor Decking” for Fifth Consecutive Year

the industry’s most popular decking brands. It is the only decking brand to receive top honors since the category was added to the study in 2021. This year, Trex received the best reviews and satisfaction scores among six outdoor decking brands included in the survey. It also is the only decking brand to earn a maximum five-star rating for trust compared to three stars for the next two closest competitors.

“It all comes down to confidence,” adds Zambanini. “Shoppers are not only looking for quality products; they want to know that they are purchasing from companies that operate with the utmost integrity and that their investment will stand the test of time. What Builders Are Seeing in COMPOSITE DECKING

Every quarter, William Blair checks in with deck builders, contractors, and distributors to get a pulse on the composite decking industry. The latest survey from the 4Q 2024 revealed builders are cautiously optimistic.

William Blair is a premier global boutique investment firm that provides expert financial services in investment banking, asset management, and private wealth management. With a reputation for deep industry insights and rigorous analysis and forward-thinking market perspectives, William Blair’s reports offer valuable intelligence on emerging trends, economic developments, and industry dynamics.

THE LATEST SURVEY FINDINGS ARE SUMMARIZED BELOW: Business Growth and Market Conditions: 45% of the builders/contractors surveyed said business held steady in the 4th quarter 2024. In addition, they saw double-digit quarterly growth (year-over-year).

With colder months slowing down outdoor projects, many builders noted a drop in demand, though they expect things to pick up again in the spring. Others pointed out that the economy and recent election slowed consumer demand.

Wood vs. Composite: What’s Selling? Composite decking continues to dominate, but many builders are watching how wood sales are shifting. While more than half of respondents said they haven’t noticed any major changes, about a third actually saw a decline in wood sales

What Customers Are Choosing: One clear trend in the market is that homeowners are becoming more budget-conscious. More than half of the builders surveyed said they’re seeing customers choose lower-priced composite decking options. This means that while composite decking is still the go-to choice, people are looking for ways to keep costs down. When it comes to brands, the competition is tight. Trex and TimberTech/AZEK were the most popular choices among those surveyed (44.83% and 48.28% respectively), followed by Deckorators and Fiberon (29.31% and 17.24% respectively). However, the survey suggests that no single brand dominates the market.

Project Timelines and Inventory: Despite economic uncertainty for some builders, most projects are staying on track. Nearly two-thirds of builders said at least 95% of their projects are being completed on time. However, some delays are happening due to

rising interest rates and labor shortages, making it tougher to keep schedules running smoothly. Slightly more than 12% had projects canceled.

On the inventory side, most builders are comfortable with their stock levels. While a few reported having either too much or too little, the majority felt their inventory was right where it needed to be.

Looking Ahead to 2025: What does the future hold for the composite decking industry? Builders are cautiously optimistic. While some expect strong growth, most predict moderate increases in sales. Overall, the composite decking industry remains steady. While some economic and seasonal challenges have slowed things down, composite decking continues to hold strong against traditional wood. Homeowners are looking for quality products but are becoming more price sensitive. Meanwhile, builders are keeping a close eye on supply chains, competition, and price trends as they prepare for the year ahead.

As the market evolves, builders will need to stay flexible, adjust to new customer demands, and be ready to meet whatever challenges come next.

Post Guards Protect Vinyl Posts Where it Matters Most

A well-built fence is an investment in security, privacy, and curb appeal—but over time, even the strongest fences can suffer from wear and tear – even vinyl. One of the most common, yet preventable, issues for vinyl fences, which are built to withstand the elements, is post damage caused by lawn equipment. That’s where Fence Armor Post Guards can help, offering an innovative solution to extend the life of your fence while maintaining its aesthetic appeal.

“We realized there was a gap in the market for protecting vinyl fences, particularly at the post base, where it’s more susceptible to damage,” says Al Martins, Fence Armor director. “Our Post Guards were designed specifically to combat the wear and tear that vinyl fence posts endure.”

MARTINS HIGHLIGHTS THE BENEFITS:

Durability and Protection. Any fence post is vulnerable to damage from weed trimmers and lawnmowers. Fence Armor Post Guards act as a protective shield, preventing cracks, chips, and unsightly wear at the base of the post, where this type of damage is most likely to occur. By adding a simple, yet highly effective layer of protection, these guards help reduce costly repairs and replacements, saving homeowners and fence professionals both time and money.

Aesthetic Appeal Functionality doesn’t have to compromise style. Fence Armor Post Guards are designed to blend seamlessly with existing fences, maintaining a clean and polished look. Available in multiple colors and finishes, including color-matching hardware, they complement a wide range of vinyl fence styles, ensuring that protection doesn’t come at the cost of curb appeal.

Easy Installation & Long-Term Savings. Installing Fence Armor Post Guards is a quick and hassle-free process that requires minimal tools and effort. They are secured around the base of the post, positioned at trimmer height for optimal protection. Because they are made from high-quality, weather-resistant materials, they require little to no maintenance, offering long-term savings by preventing premature fence deterioration.

Eco-Friendly & Sustainable. In addition to protecting your fence, Fence Armor Post Guards also contribute to a more sustainable approach to fence maintenance. By reducing the need for post replacements, they help minimize waste and extend the lifespan of fencing materials, making them an eco-friendly choice for homeowners and contractors alike.

Fence Armor’s Post Guards provide a simple yet essential solution for protecting vinyl fences from everyday damage, and ultimately, the property owner’s investment in their fence.

“Fence Armor is about preserving what’s important, and our Post Guards combine functionality with aesthetic appeal to help ensure a vinyl fence remains strong and beautiful for years to come,” adds Martins. “For those looking to prevent damage, protect their investment, and prolong the life of their fences, Fence Armor Post Guards are the ultimate solution.”

NATURE'S COMPOSITES FIRE-SAFE FENCING: A Smarter Alternative

With increasing wildfire risks, communities across the United States are reevaluating their fencing choices to enhance fire safety. Traditional wood fencing, while popular for its natural appearance, is highly flammable and often does not meet new fire safety regulations. Nature’s Composites offers an innovative solution with its proprietary wheat-based composite fencing—an option that combines durability, aesthetics, and improved fire performance. The material is already being used by HOAs and state municipalities in California and Colorado, demonstrating its effectiveness in high-risk areas.

AESTHETIC APPEAL WITH ENHANCED SAFETY

One of the biggest challenges in fire-prone areas is finding fencing that is both visually appealing and compliant with evolving safety regulations. Nature’s Composites’ fencing provides the warm, natural look of wood while offering a safer alternative. Unlike traditional wood fencing, which typically falls into the least fire-resistant Class C category with a flame spread index between 150 and 200, the proprietary wheat-based composite formula has been tested under ASTM E8423B and achieved a flame spread index of 75, placing it in Class B. This significantly decreases flame spread while maintaining the rich tones and textures property owners desire.

Additionally, the composite fencing is low maintenance and resistant to moisture, insects, and warping—issues that commonly plague wood fencing. With no need for seasonal painting, staining, or sealing, it is an ideal long-term investment for homeowners, HOAs, and municipalities looking to balance safety with style. Nature's Composites offers a range of products, including individual pickets, ready-to-install fence panels, and ranch rail systems in both semi-privacy and full-privacy designs. Regardless of the product, all are crafted from the same wheat-based formula, ensuring consistent safety and durability.

CASE STUDY: FIRE-SAFE FENCING IN ACTION

In response to updated fire codes, a homeowner in Eagle County, Colorado, sought a fencing option that would enhance safety without compromising curb appeal. After consulting with a community association and the Roaring Fork Valley Wildfire Collaborative, Nature’s Composites’ Composite Modern Semi-Privacy Perimeter Fence and Composite Modern Semi-Privacy Perimeter Gate in Rosewood were selected. Metal accents were incorporated between the fence posts and the house to provide an extra layer of protection.

The choice was driven by the need for a product that met safety standards while preserving the beauty of the property. With its Class B flame spread rating, the composite fencing provided a safer alternative to wood, demonstrating how property owners can make smart choices that align with fire mitigation efforts.

Composite Decking Market, 32% of Growth to Originate from North America

The global composite decking market size is estimated to grow to $3.99 billion from 2025 - 2029, according to a new research report from Technavio.

The market is experiencing significant growth, driven by the revival of the construction industry and the increasing adoption of prefabricated construction solutions. These trends are fueled by the benefits offered by composite decking, such as durability, low maintenance, and resistance to weather conditions. The market is expected to continue expanding due to the increasing demand for sustainable and eco-friendly building materials. Composite decking is a popular choice for homeowners and contractors due to its durability and low maintenance properties. This building material is made from a combination of natural wood fibers and plastic resins, creating varieties such as capped composite decking with a protective shell. While

initial costs may be higher than natural wood, composite decking offers benefits like resistance to fading, staining, scratching, and high load-bearing capacity. Resin types used in composite decking include polyethylene and polypropylene, with a shift in trend towards the latter due to its superior performance. Composite decking railing is also available, offering a cohesive look for outdoor spaces. Other advantages include low thermal expansion, resistance to slip, and color stability. Raw material costs and segmentation, including form (solid or hollow), have influenced product offerings from multiple companies. The building and construction industry has seen a rise in demand for composite decking due to its benefits, while the requirement for natural wood is lessening due to harvesting and regulatory concerns.

Tom Barenberg

Tom Barenberg, president of Trex-SRF, began installing fences to earn extra money while going to school. Today he puts his decades of experience to work leading Trex-SRF, the national distributor for TREX fencing. Fence News visited with him about his career and insight into the industry.

WHAT PATH LED YOU TO YOUR SUCCESSFUL CAREER IN THE FENCE INDUSTRY?

I am a Colorado native and started installing and repairing fences at a young age on my grandfather's farm. In high school, I worked at a lumberyard as a yard man. I would load the fence products our customers purchased and then those customers began asking me to install their fence material –this became my first fence installation business. When I established Split Rail Fence Co., we started by installing split rail fences and then expanded to other fence products including cedar privacy fence, chain-link fence, ornamental iron fence, Trex and automatic gate operators.

Over 40 years, I grew Split Rail Fence Co. into the largest installer of Trex fencing in the country. When I sold the business in 2016, we had approximately 150 employees and were the largest fence company in the Rocky Mountain region.

From my experience with Trex fencing products, it was an easy transition to Trex SRF, and I serve as president of this company. We are the national distributor for TREX fencing. I'm also a past president of the Colorado Fence Association and previously served on the board for the Metro Denver Homebuilders Association.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE STRENGTHS OF TREX-SRF?

Trex fencing is hands down the top-of-the-line product for privacy fence. We have an exceptionally experienced sales staff, office staff and yard staff, which is why we are recognized as one of the best fence product distributors in the country.

HOW HAS YOUR BUSINESS INCREASED OVER THE YEARS UNDER YOUR LEADERSHIP?

Trex SRF continues to grow in leaps and bounds and Trex fence products continue to gain popularity with the fence contractors who take them on. Trex fence products are expected to grow significantly in the upcoming years with Trex Corporation investing hundreds of thousands of dollars in new manufacturing facilities. The company currently has over $1 billion in sales with all products combined.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT WORKING IN THIS INDUSTRY AND IN YOUR CURRENT ROLE?

I enjoy the relationships with the other companies and individuals within the industry. We are known as a hard-working group and share a common work ethic.

DID YOU HAVE A BUSINESS MENTOR THAT HELPED INSPIRE YOU EARLIER IN YOUR CAREER?

I've had numerous mentors over the years. The fence business can be a very rewarding and profitable career. I encourage young people to seek out the advice of their more experienced peers. We are here to help.

WHAT CAREER GOALS HAVE YOU ACHIEVED THAT YOU ARE PROUD OF?

Trex SRF has achieved numerous goals, including providing material for 42 miles (221,760 feet) of Trex Fencing for the largest HOA in the country. Trex fencing products are consistently chosen as the go-to product for HOA, residential, commercial and government projects.

WHAT IS A BUSINESS CHALLENGE YOU HAVE FACED AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME IT?

The most recent challenge, as with all suppliers, was product availability during the time of COVID due to the manufacturing restraints. Trex now has a new manufacturing facility being built to meet the growing demand for our products.

WAS THERE SOMETHING SURPRISING ABOUT THIS INDUSTRY, OR PERHAPS YOUR CAREER, THAT YOU DIDN’T EXPECT?

I was not planning on being in the fence business, but I started installing fences in high school and during the summer while in college and one thing led to another. Like many in our field, I learned that once you get in, you never leave! My plan was to enter the commercial real estate world. I am currently involved in residential land development, construction of industrial warehouses and various other aspects of real estate, so I’ve been able to follow that dream as well, thanks to my work in the fence industry.

HOW DO YOU STAY MOTIVATED?

My experienced staff keeps me motivated. We are a tight-knit group, and we all work hard together while supporting each other.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE JUST ENTERING THIS INDUSTRY?

Spend time with those who are experienced in the industry so they can show you the ropes. Fencing is a great industry with a lot of opportunities for anyone willing to work hard and learn.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN, TO RELAX?

I like to mountain climb, hike, ride ATVs, hunt and fish, and I try to spend as much time outdoors as possible.

Ladder Safety Findings Released

The American Ladder Institute (ALI), the only approved developer of safety standards for the U.S. ladder industry, has released findings from its 2024 Ladder Safety Training and Citations Survey. Results reveal preferred methods of ladder safety education as well as types of ladder-related accidents and injuries, frequency and types of ladder citations, and how rates compare to surveys from 2016, 2018, and 2020.

Survey participants were asked what type of ladder-related accidents or incidents have occurred at their organization over the last two years.

The most common cause of these incidents was the ladder being set up incorrectly, followed by using the wrong ladder for the job (too long, too short, wrong material, wrong application).

From 2020 to 2024, there was a 21% decrease in ladder-related accidents that resulted in serious injury or loss of life.

The survey found that nearly all organizations use a form of ladder safety training. The year-over-year comparison shows an increase in the number of organizations paying for safety training (35%, up from 28% in 2020). Similar to 2016, 2018, and 2020, in 2024 more than 75% of the organizations mandate training and have done so for many years.

Organizations don’t need to pay for ladder safety training. ALI provides robust, absolutely free-of-charge ladder safety training at its dedicated training website, laddersafetytraining.org.

The site makes safety training easy all year long, with an organized curriculum, training videos, and resource libraries, all completely free. Training courses are designed to seamlessly complement and integrate with an organization’s existing training program, or managers can choose to use the entire program.

After signing up, trainers and training managers develop a custom dashboard, called a Trainer’s Toolbox, in which they select training and testing, assign them to trainees, and monitor trainee performance and progress on the assignments. The Toolbox is designed for ultimate flexibility and ease of use. Topics covered include single and extension, articulated, mobile, and stepladders. Training is available in English or Spanish. Anyone who wishes to enhance their awareness of ladder safety can sign up, take training, and be tested.

ALI believes that continuous safety training is the best way to empower workers to make the right decisions when using ladders. To raise further awareness about ladder safety, ALI has designated every March as National Ladder Safety Month. More information can be found at laddersafetymonth.com

OHC Launches Lumber Coating Service

Overseas Hardwoods Co. (OHC) has added a new state-of-the-art coating facility at its Stockton, Alabama, complex to improve the looks and performance of siding, soffits and decking.

OHC can now “ProCoat” a variety of lumber products in a factory setting, meticulously applying just the right amount of finish with no overspray. Products are sanded, coated, wiped and cured on both sides of the board in a controlled environment. This guarantees consistency, eliminates wasted time on the job site, while waiting for the product to dry before applying additional coats, and eliminates unwanted mess.

OHC has been solving customers’ problems since the 1960s with manufactured cutto-length kits for trailer manufacturers and then in the 1990s with an engineered finger joint product—both innovative solutions that are still saving customers time and labor cost. OHC’s manufacturing capabilities have evolved over the years to include predrilling, custom profiles, CNC customization, precision-end-trimming, and much more.

ProCoating is just another way OHC can partner with customers to:

• Eliminate wasted project time, labor costs, and mess.

• Enhance the natural beauty of wood.

• Ensure consistent quality in every board.

• Extend the lifespan of finished wood projects.

Durability, sustainability, endurance and aesthetics are all important considerations for architects, interior designers, contractors, and ultimately the end-user when choosing the appropriate wood to use for various projects. This is especially true for decking and siding, which is exposed to the environment year-round. From extreme sun exposure, rain, snow and changing temperatures, exterior finished projects can really take a beating.

OHC constantly receives questions like, “Why did my deck gray so fast?” “I like pine, but how can I make it look richer?” “Do you have a coating that will last longer than a few months?”

As OHC has listened to these frustrations over the years, their team has been working behind the scenes researching and testing the best finishing products for its customers. Cutek, PPG and Van Technologies are just a few of the coating manufacturers OHC partners with in order to offer consistent quality, extended lifespan, and enhanced natural beauty in every board it supplies. Cutek’s solvent-based coating is perfect for outdoor applications with its deep penetrating oil that provides long-term protection against water damage. PPG’s range of Proluxe semi-transparent and matte stains offer UV protection for products like exterior siding and soffits. Van Technologies has a great selection for durable multi-coat finishes for decks and more.

From a simple base coat to offer protection of the lumber during the construction process to the addition of color tones to offer a complete finished product ready to install with no finishing labor on the job site, OHC will work with customers to determine the best finishing product for their project. In addition to numerous stock colors, OHC has the capability to customize colors, allowing OEM’s, architects, and designers to have a signature color they can put their name on.

Leadership and Self-Deception: How We Sabotage Our Own Effectiveness

On a recent visit to an AFA chapter meeting, a manager from a very successful fence contractor pulled me aside to discuss her leadership riddle.

“I’ve done everything I can to get my employees at my main branch to be more engaged, but they just don’t seem to care. I pay them well, I set clear expectations, I’ve even implemented Monday morning meetings, and yet they’re not giving their best effort. What more can I do?”

At first glance, this seemed like a leadership challenge—one of motivation, culture, or even hiring the right people. But as we talked, something deeper emerged. She spoke about how her employees were ungrateful, how they didn’t appreciate her hard work, how they were the problem. This was a clue. The real issue wasn’t just with her employees. The real issue was selfdeception—she was “in the box.”

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE “IN THE BOX”?

Self-deception in leadership happens when we see others as obstacles or problems to fix rather than as people with their own needs and perspectives. In Leadership and Self-Deception, the Arbinger Institute describes this concept as being “in the box”—a mindset where we justify our actions, blame others, and fail to see how we contribute to the very problems we complain about.

As we continued our conversation, I asked, “What if your employees aren’t the real issue? What if your frustration is partly coming from the way you see them?” This was a turning point. She started realizing she was not assuming positive intent or practicing blameless problem solving. She saw her employees as obstacles to overcome rather than individuals to inspire.

HOW SELF-DECEPTION HURTS LEADERSHIP

When leaders are in the box, they create a cycle of disengagement. If a manager views employees as lazy, they will treat them with suspicion or frustration. Employees sense this, and their motivation drops. The manager

then takes this as proof that they were right all along, further justifying their negative view. This self-fulfilling cycle reinforces ineffective leadership. The hardest part of self-deception is recognizing it in ourselves. We naturally assume the problem is “out there” rather than within us. The way we see others shapes how they respond to us. When we believe employees are a burden, we act accordingly, and they, in turn, react in ways that confirm our expectations.

GETTING OUT OF THE BOX

So how do leaders escape this self-deception? It starts with a shift in perspective:

• See people as people – Recognize that employees have their own challenges, motivations, and frustrations. Instead of seeing them as “the problem,” consider how you might be contributing to the situation.

• Take responsibility for your impact – Instead of asking, “Why won’t they work harder?” ask, “What am I doing that might be disengaging them?”

• Build genuine connections – People respond to leaders who respect and value them. Approach employees with curiosity and a willingness to listen rather than judgment.

THE LEADERSHIP BREAKTHROUGH

By the end of our discussion, the manager’s perspective had shifted. “Maybe I’ve been too focused on fixing them instead of understanding them,” she admitted. That’s the power of recognizing self-deception—it opens the door to real leadership growth.

Leadership isn’t just about strategy and alignment; it’s about how we see people. When we step out of the box, we stop sabotaging our own effectiveness and start creating teams that are truly engaged and motivated.

A couple of months ago in this column, I said, “We are entering a period when there is going to be a lot of talk about change in many of these (fence industry-related) areas, but it takes a while for that talk to turn into policies, and even longer for those policies to be implemented.” Boy, was I wrong!

The new administration has made it clear that the days of listening to (or reading) the news about what’s going on in Washington and the rest of the world, and thinking “Heck, that doesn’t apply to me,” are gone. There is little or no time to analyze what is going on and determine its impact, because the next big change is already coming at us.

The incredible speed of the changes being introduced, and the HUGE (his word, not mine) short- and long-term impact of those changes, hasn’t been seen in the United States for nearly a century, if ever. News outlets aren’t reporting important policy changes on a monthly, weekly, or even daily basis. They are reporting on them hourly! What’s happening with the new/second Trump administration reminds me of a slogan we used for several years when I worked as the membership and chapter relations director for one of the largest construction associations in the United States: “Get Into Politics or Get Out of Business.”

That slogan could certainly apply to everyone in the fencing industry right now. The impact of what is happening in Washington will be felt

Can You Handle the Chaos?

throughout the economy not only in the U.S., but also throughout North America and, indeed, the rest of the world.

This doesn’t mean we should panic; it just means we need to be aware. We need to be tracking legislation and policy changes and considering what these changes mean to the fence industry and our individual businesses. Our industry relies heavily on partnerships among the manufacturers, the suppliers, the contractors, and the other stakeholders (service providers, architects and specifiers, etc.). What impacts one of those tends to, eventually, impact all of them.

Uncertainty is not good for business if you are depending on a just-in-time supply chain, withinbudget materials, and an ongoing need for trained and capable workers. But uncertainty is what is predominant in Washington right now. It leaves us:

• Wondering if the prices of construction materials (especially wood) are going to spike because of potential tariff wars

• Considering whether to institute a hiring freeze until things become clearer regarding immigration restrictions

• Rethinking our assumptions about a big investment in the renewable fuels market when the government is backtracking on goals

• Trying to determine the reliability of forecasts related to general economic situations, the construction industry, and the fencing industry

• Reassuring our current workforce that this, too, shall pass, and our industry will continue to grow and prosper no matter what happens

Yes, there is a sense of chaos in Washington right now, but no one is sure of what the outcome is going to be. Until things are clearer, stay informed. Stay engaged.

There may be some level of strain on everyone’s nerves, but we’ll get through if we work together, so stay positive! And remember, you need to “get into politics or get out of business.”

76 FENCE Expands Franchise Network in Tennessee

76 FENCE, a leading provider of residential and commercial fencing solutions, announced its latest franchise growth with the addition of regional developers Deana and Josh Persons in Tennessee. The couple plans to launch their first two territories in early 2025 and has an ambitious goal to expand 76 FENCE locations statewide.

The Tennessee expansion builds on the momentum of recent growth in North Carolina, where regional developer Drew Myers is leading franchise efforts. This marks a significant milestone in the brand’s mission to deliver premium fencing services and support aspiring entrepreneurs in growing their own businesses.

“We are excited to bring 76 FENCE to Tennessee and introduce its exceptional service and business model to our communities,” says Josh Persons, regional developer of 76 FENCE. “With the brand’s strong foundation and proven success, we’re confident in its potential to meet the fencing needs of both residential and commercial customers across the state.”

The Persons bring significant leadership and business expertise to their roles, making them well-suited to lead 76 FENCE’s growth in Tennessee. “Our role as regional developers is not only to establish our territories but also to help others succeed within this proven system", says Deana Persons, regional developer of 76 FENCE. “Tennessee offers incredible potential, and we’re eager to grow 76 FENCE into a household name here.”

As regional developers, the Persons will oversee franchise recruitment, training, and support throughout the state, creating opportunities for aspiring business owners. Their efforts will tap into the growing demand for fencing services, fueled by Tennessee’s expanding residential and commercial sectors.

“Deana and Josh are a perfect fit for the 76 FENCE franchise,” say Ed Samane, CEO of 76 FENCE. “Their entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to excellence align with our mission to deliver top-quality fencing solutions and help franchisees succeed. Their leadership will be key in driving growth across Tennessee.”

The 76 FENCE franchise model offers a range of benefits, including comprehensive training, operational support, and marketing resources. The company’s streamlined installation process and focus on customer service have established it as a trusted name in the fencing industry.

“We’ve seen tremendous success in North Carolina, and we’re confident that the same opportunities exist in Tennessee,” says Samane. “With the Persons at the helm, we look forward to seeing our brand flourish in this new market.”

The Persons plan to open their first two territories in February 2025, covering the South Nashville region, while a newly added franchise owner will establish two additional territories in the North Nashville region. Together, these openings mark the start of a robust expansion strategy to grow 76 FENCE’s presence throughout Tennessee and meet the rising demand for premium fencing solutions.

Small Steps to BIG Rewards: A Roadmap to Success?

Over the years I have been asked more times than I can recall, “What is the key factor to my company’s success?” In the pursuit of excellence, there are no short cuts, no magic bullet – it takes hard work.

I have had many successful clients who make a great living and have quality of life for themselves and all their employees, mainly because they do the small things right. They have found that secret sauce, and life is good for them.

The first step in mixing the secret sauce is to define what you want to achieve. Next, be consistent in what you do and pay close attention to detail. Researchers found that 40% of the actions taken each day are a result of habits, not of conscious decisions.

Establishing good work habits and success-oriented systems and procedures is key. Average leaders make good decisions occasionally, great leaders make consistently good decisions. Your secret sauce is eliminating bad habits and forming good ones.

Every great leader and every great employee within the company achieves success, not in one good day’s work, but because of many consistently good, small choices and decisions made over time that have become good habits. That is the number one key to success: building good habits and making them standardized company policy.

Unfortunately, the opposite is true for bad habits. Being late has the immediate gratification of allowing you to sleep in a few more minutes. Having coffee and a donut in the yard every morning before getting out to work can be fun for the crew, but bad for the bottom line. Being on time and out in the field early will not show instant rewards, but continued tardiness will translate into damaging productivity and profitability of the company in the long run. Do you see what I mean? All little steps, all very important.

Let me give you a few examples. Say you have an employee that is consistently late for work. A late or disorganized start to your day adds up quickly and if unchecked, can result in a significant loss in daily productivity that costs the company big time.

Get it done now, don’t procrastinate, delegate authority and accomplish more, praise in public, criticize in private are all examples of good,

productive habits you could work on to improve operations in your fence company today.

Have you said, “Thanks for a great job,” to those who deserve it lately? Can you think of any other behavioral improvements to turn into good habits? Remember, small steps lead to huge improvements.

Good habits are difficult to maintain because the payoff is always in the future. It takes time for the many good decisions to bring good results. That’s where the consistency comes in. Day after day, make those good choices for your future happiness.

If it sounds daunting, don’t let it be so. Please reach out to me at tluby@profitbuilder.org or call me at 941-981-3677 and I will try to answer your questions.

WORKING hard and putting in long hours running a fencing operation is one thing most of you are quite familiar with. However, making a substantial profit and sustaining a quality life style with security and peace of mind is something far to few fencing companies enjoy. Profit Builders International and their Business Partners in the fencing industry would like to help you get there and beyond.

Contained in this revolutionary new “Roadmap to Success” Program from PBI are all of the other things that fencers need to know; the “business stuff” necessary to successfully run your fencing company. Things like how to;

• Refine management skills

• Develop functional organization

• Optimize your profit and expense controls

• Increase production and operational efficiencies

• Enhance sales and marketing skills with increased volume and profit margins

• And finally, how to create a “Strategic Business Plan” for you and your company’s future

These are things that are critical to successfully run your fencing company, achieving financial security, and ultimately, securing your future and peace of mind.

Tom Luby has helped hundreds of contractors within the fence industry achieve success with maximum profitability and efficiency. With over 25 years of experience consulting in the fence industry, he developed the “Roadmap for Success”, a program that can help contractors succeed. Start-Up Stories

Blake Thomas, owner of Vinyl Fence Warehouse, never imagined that fences would shape his entire future. But looking back, it all makes perfect sense.

Those on the outside may think owning and growing a business is glamorous. They see the current building, the staff, the equipment and the profits. What they don’t see are the startups. The small beginnings, the ever-present worry, the dreams and the everyday decisions that can either make it or break it.

Fence News honors those who put their hat in the self-employment ring and built their business one small step at a time.

“My dad, Rodger Thomas, created the company Iron Tough Fence. He worked out of our garage, handcrafting specialty railings, fences, and gates with access control,” Blake says. “At the time, it was just about putting food on the table. But little did we know, this small, garage-based business would spark something much bigger.”

Never content with the status quo, Rodger continued to build his small business, always striving for more. In the late 1990s he booked a flight to San Antonio, Texas, to attend FenceTech.

“He went in search of better tools, equipment, and techniques,” Blake says. “However, he found even more. FenceTech is where dad first discovered vinyl fencing. At the time, most fence companies were sticking to traditional wood and metal, but my dad immediately saw the potential in vinyl. This wasn’t just another fencing material; this was the future.”

Rodger invested in high-end CNC routing equipment, purchased land right off the highway, built a fabrication shop, and became a dealer for Heritage Vinyl Products.

Every step of the way, Blake and his brother Brady were learning how to weld, install, sell, educate, and build relationships.

“We grew up working in the business, and before we knew it, we had our PHDs (Post Hole Diggers),” says Blake. “Between the three of us, we now have over 50 years of combined experience in installation, fabrication, and construction. We’re not just business owners, we’re industry experts.”

That small business Rodger started in his garage is now Vinyl Fence Warehouse—a 22,000 sq. ft. fabrication and shipping facility stocked with fencing products from around the world and distributed nationwide.

“We’ve grown to have the largest customer base of any small fence company in the U.S. thanks to our history of local installations, our network of top-tier installers, and our nationwide shipping program,” Blake says.

While Vinyl Fence Warehouse has had much success, there have been plenty of tough times as well.

When COVID hit, everything we knew about business turned upside down. It forced us to adapt, innovate, and scale from within,” Blake says. “While other companies struggled with supply chain issues and labor shortages, we streamlined operations, optimized our e-commerce strategy, and doubled down on efficiency without needing to expand to new locations to gain more customers.”

These efforts allowed the company to come out of those hard years stronger and better than ever. In 2022 Vinyl Fence Warehouse launched its very own premium residential fencing brand Goliath Fence Systems designed for high-end customers and top-tier contractors. The company’s digital presence also expanded with an E-commerce platform and the Behind the Fence Podcast, where listeners learn what it’s really like to run a nationwide, family-owned fencing business.

“If I had to summarize what I’ve learned in this journey, it would be that success takes time, relationships build businesses, and you must embrace change,” Blake says. “The fencing industry isn’t just about materials, labor, and installations. It’s about creating something that lasts. That’s exactly what we’ve done, and this is just the beginning.”

OZARK FENCE & SUPPLY

Ozark Fence & Supply, based in Springfield, Missouri, has offered retail fencing and installation for six decades. Owner Joe Everest says the business was founded by his grandfather, John Everest and John’s brotherin-law, Everett Williams in 1955. “Everett owned a steel foundry and could make many of the parts used in building fences, so it was a great partnership.”

Several years into the business, John bought out Everett and ran the company with his wife, Elizabeth. In the mid-nineties, Joe’s parents, Jim and Donna Everest, bought the company after moving back to the Ozarks from North Carolina. Joe purchased the company in 2016, but Jim continues to play an active role in the business. “He heads up the commercial arm of the installation company and lends his expertise to contractors coming in to purchase materials,” Joe says. “My sister, Sarah Orlandi, is also active in the business. She started out in Residential Sales and quickly moved over to the operations of the installation arm. She currently works with my father to help him transition into semiretirement, which, as most fence contractors understand, means he’s looking forward to only working 40 hours a week and spending his newfound free time with his grandkids.”

Joe's fencing career began as a child picking up trash around the company.

“Likely to keep me out from underfoot in my parents’ office,” he says. “I later went on to cut and fabricate gates, before we started welding gates, and picking up materials for retail customers and our crews’ projects. In the summers during high school, I moved into the field, first on set crews and then on finish crews. In college, I moved into sales and operations, which I continued with until I purchased the company.”

Joe sees himself as a link in the chain of John Everest’s legacy. “My grandfather worked two additional jobs for the first decade of Ozark Fence’s existence to ensure we have what we have today,” Joe says. “Legacy is everything, and continuing that legacy is truly an honor that we are incredibly grateful for. It speaks to resiliency and prioritizing of what really matters, which is the people who make up Ozark Fence.”

Joe says his family operates the company like a family. “The bottom line is important to our company, but it isn’t the top priority. While it is important to generate profit, it shouldn’t come at the expense of those around us. Sometimes we prioritize what’s good for our people and our community over what’s good for the company.”

Joe adds that thinking generationally often helps keep things in perspective. He asks himself two key questions. “First, would

my grandfather be proud of the work we're doing and how we’re accomplishing our goals. Second, will my children and their children be proud of the legacy they’ve been charged with continuing?”

Owning a company that has been in the family for generations gives Joe Everest a unique perspective on the fencing industry and how it has evolved over the decades.

“The industry has found collaboration and networking that no other generation has seen or experienced. In my father’s day, everything was held close to the vest; everyone hung tightly to what they considered their ‘secrets’ thinking that those ‘secrets’ were their competitive advantage. What we’re finding now is that most everyone had a version of these ‘secrets’, and that by not collaborating, we’re often re-inventing the wheel many times over, rather than improving on the idea. In terms of collaboration and networking, I believe we’ve seen an incredible improvement just in the last decade. I truly believe we’re in the best days of the fencing industry. I can’t wait to see what our children’s generation comes up with!"

Management Corner IMPROVING COMMUNICATION SKILLS FOR STRONGER BUSINESS RELATIONSHIPS

Effective communication is the foundation of every successful business. It enables leaders to convey vision, align teams, and foster collaboration. Miscommunication leads to inefficiencies, while clear communication enhances decision-making and engagement.

There are key skills for successful business communication that can—and should – be a focus for ongoing development for anyone in a management position. These include:

ACTIVE LISTENING. Being fully present in a conversation builds trust and prevents miscommunication. Understanding context, emotions, and motivation helps build stronger team dynamics.

CLARITY AND BREVITY. Time is valuable in business. Use simple, direct language and avoid unnecessary jargon. Clear, concise communication ensures messages are easily understood.

NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION. Body language, facial expressions, and tone impact how messages are received. Positive cues—like eye contact and open gestures—signal confidence and engagement, while negative cues can create barriers.

EMPATHY AND EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE. Connecting with employees, customers and stakeholders improves workplace relationships and morale.

Acknowledging different perspectives fosters a supportive culture.

CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK. Focus on behavior rather than personal criticism. Provide specific, actionable suggestions. Be receptive to feedback with an open mind to encourage growth.

Barriers like distractions, emotional reactions, and cultural differences hinder communication. These can be overcome by being aware they exist and addressing each as you encounter them:

• Encourage active listening and open dialogue.

• Minimize distractions with focused meetings and structured channels.

• Maintain professionalism in high-pressure situations.

• Adapt communication styles to accommodate cultural or language differences.

Mastering effective communication is worth the effort for your business and your career. Doing so will enhance productivity and positive workplace engagement, and foster stronger professional relationships that will help you achieve success.
