ie haben kürzlich dafür plädiert, dass Afrika seine Städte neu erfinden muss und die Menschen dort das nomadische Leben wieder erlernen müssten. Warum das? Heute leben weltweit 3,5 Milliarden Menschen in Städten. In 20 Jahren werden es 6,5 Milliarden sein. Das heißt, dass wir in zwei Dekaden drei Milliarden Stadtbewohner neu dazubekommen – die Hälfte davon in Afrika. Wir müssten auf dem Kontinent also jede Woche eine Stadt für 1,5 Millionen Menschen neu errichten. Dieses Wachstum sprengt jede Vorstellungskraft und unsere bisherigen urbanen Strukturen sind dafür überhaupt nicht ausgelegt. Außerdem werden wir erleben, dass große Teile Afrikas in den nächsten Jahrzehnten unbewohnbar werden, einschließlich solcher Gegenden, wo heute Städte liegen.
ou recently argued that Africa needs to reinvent its cities, and that people there need to relearn nomadic living. Why is that?
Today, 3.5 billion people live in cities around the world. In 20 years, it will be 6.5 billion. This means that in two decades we will have three billion new urban dwellers – half of them in Africa alone. We would have to build a new city for 1.5 million people every week on the continent! That kind of growth is unfathomable, and our existing urban structures are not designed for it at all. Large parts of Africa will become uninhabitable over the next few decades, including areas where cities are located today. We will experience a transition period in which cities will cease to exist, causing huge waves of migration, and new cities will have to be built at a rapid pace.
