Eaglet Welcome

I joined BMS in September 2018 and I can hardly believe that I am now writing this nearly four years later: it just proves that time really does fly when you’re having fun!

I began my time in Mrs Garton’s class: I remember that it took a while to adjust to life in the Junior School, but by the time of the first Christmas production (‘Bah Humbug!’) I realised that I had completely settled in and couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. The Christmas production sparked a love of drama which I have carried with me through the rest of my time in the Junior School.

In Year 4, I moved into Mrs Mills’s class. We quickly found out that Mrs Mills hates to sit still – even in English lessons. My favourite memory from her class was Punctuation Karate where she made us act out different punctuation marks to help us learn them! However, in March 2020, Covid struck and we had to get used to lockdown learning. Like many others, I found learning from home challenging, although seeing everyone’s pets on Teams each day was always fun.

By Year 5, I was in Mrs Harpin’s class and things had begun to return to normal – or so we thought! Although we went back to school in September, this time we were in ‘bubbles’. This was not as much fun as it sounds: it meant that we were mostly restricted to staying within our own class, although we were able to play with other people from the same year group at lunchtime. We even had separate year group playgrounds! Amazingly, the school managed to put on another Christmas production, filmed

class-by-class and edited together. In January 2021, our Christmas holidays were extended in the worst way imaginable: we were going back to lockdown learning! It was hard readjusting to being back at home having just got used to being back in school. I think we were all surprised at how much we missed being at school, despite how hard our teachers worked to keep things interesting. I was super-excited to join Year 6 due to all the new, exciting opportunities and the return of normality, including sports fixtures! I think my form teacher, Mr Warren, was excited about this too. I was delighted to get one of the main parts in the Christmas production (‘Bethlehem: The Musical’) and it was great to have the whole school together performing in front of a live audience again. Another highlight of year 6 was the brilliant Victorian Day where I saw a strict and scary side of my teachers that I had never seen before and I was shocked at how differently girls and boys were treated. We also got to go on some amazing trips: I loved the trip to Duxford and the residential to Condover Hall was truly memorable.

I cannot end this introduction without thanking the production team of the Eaglet for putting this wonderful record of 2021-22 together and every single member of staff in the Junior School for making the past four years so unforgettable.

009 walked down the exotic hallways, looking for room 623 where she was positive Bond was staying. Being over 6ft 2 she towered over most men, many admiring her beauty and silky hair that hung out of her vintage headdress. She kept walking with a slow stroll as she had just passed room 610, when she finally saw room 623 in the corner of her eye. She knocked confidentially and the door swung open. Bond was ready. As the door opened James grabbed for his six-shooter gun, he had stashed in the doorway, but as soon as laying eyes on her he wouldn’t dare shoot. He put the gun down and politely apologized for being such a fool to threaten her with a gun.

“No, no, no discomfort” she said forging her French

accent. “Right then urm… don’t take this the wrong way but… why are you here?” Bond asked warily. “Well, umm room service” she lied. “I didn’t order room…” If she didn’t do it now it would be too late. She pulled out a gun but by that time Bond had figured her out. He grabbed his gun from where he had leant it up against the wall and lunged at her. She walked back in to the stone railing on the precarious balcony ledge. She tripped over and at the same time pulled the gun trigger, but it slipped shooting her in the leg, blood began trickling down. Her eyes were now slits like a snake and small tears dribbled down her cheeks.

“You’re done.” Bond grinned down at her.

The Mystery

I remember waking up that morning, it was around 4am. I wondered why I had woken up so early. Something seemed weird, so I went to check on Ava and Aria’s. The window was open, the curtain flapping from the breeze. I definitely shut it before they went to bed, I always do. I looked into Ava’s bed, and she was sound asleep, then I went to Aria’s bed. Her golden, silky hair wasn’t there, and nor was she. My heart was beating so fast. Where would she be? I checked downstairs, in the kitchen, living room, study, bathroom, laundry room but there was no sign of

her. I ran to No.13 and knocked on our neighbour’s door, but there was no answer, so I went along to No. 15, and Alicia answered. She had clearly been woken by the bell. Her brunette hair was in knots, her pyjamas creased and big black circles under her eyes. I asked her if she had seen aria and she said no, but she did see a man walking down the street with a little girl, about age 6, holding her like a baby. I panicked and ran…

Flashback stories

I’m surrounded by a painful silence, the only sound is the sorrowful cries that fill the room. A river of tears are rapidly racing down my slender face. It’s like the world’s paused and it’s only me and my mum’s soothing voice in my head. “Why did it have to be her?” I whimper ever so quietly. Luke, my little brother, squeezes my hand tight, whilst I listen to his heart breaking, sobbing. Whilst holding his hand, I gaze down at my tight beautiful, black dress (darker than the menacing night sky) my eye spots the memory filled, precious silver lockout mum gave me. Before I know it my brain’s whirring with the memory, and BANG! The giggling, the comfort, the bliss. I’m back, the humble home I lived in for years. “Rosie, darling? Come down, I’ve got something for you!” Mum called in her warm caring voice. Curiously, a scurried down the stairs, to see an excited expression on mum’s face. Confused, I scanned the room and out of the corner of my eye I saw a neatly and carefully wrapped with brightly coloured ribbons on top

There’s a sudden pause, no sound, no movement. Nothing. Carefully, I lift the beautifully colored lid off the mysterious box, making sure not to damage, dent or destroy a single thing on it. My eyes start to glow and an amazed smile spreads across my face. I lay down for a few minutes admiring the glorious heirloom placed right in front of my eyes. “Keep it will ya’, thought it was time for you to have it.”

I feel a tight grip from my brother’s hand, which brings me back to the present. I can still feel mums comforting arm around me, almost as if she is still here. By my side. My face is hot and stained with tears. My Aunty gives me a kiss on the cheek and checks if I’m ok and then she ambles in front of everybody to give her speech. The faint sound of people shouting fills my ears and reminds me of the fateful night. There’s a sudden scream coming from downstairs, then cry and another scream.

Memory Lane

It was Monday morning and I had just woken up. It was school time, but I was so tired and not bothered. I brushed my teeth, dressed, had breakfast, and went outside. That’s when I heard bird chirping. It took me back when I was only 4. It was my first day of school and I was so excited. I ran downstairs, outside and went to take my first day school photo. After I took the photo, I heard the most beautiful bird singing I have ever heard. I was finally at school and I was sitting at my desk daydreaming about the flashback I had. It was so hot that I was sweating. It reminded me of my first day outside. After eight months of I was born I went outside I was so intrigued and excited I was running around the garden and it was boiling to. My mum tried to catch me, but I was so fast. I almost fainted. “WAKE UP, WAKE

Plates are being thrown chairs are colliding. We heard a thump, then a crack. The shouting isn’t quite clear enough. I couldn’t let it carry on I had to stop it. Pulling Luke with me, I leaped down the stairs ready to save my mum! I had been filled with confidence and eagerness but before we could make it downstairs, we heard a scream then, a shout and then a deafening slam and that was the last we heard of our mum.

Memories, are truly amazing, aren’t they? Except from when they end. “Sissy, Sissy a-are y-you ok?” Luke was whispering the same sentence into my ear, for what felt like forever, in a terrified tone of voice. I give a nod in his direction and then a reassuring hug. Could it be real or is it imaginary, but I’m sure I hear a knock.

Nothing can stop the experience from being forgotten. I feel the same emotions, I hear the same things and think the same things. Mum and Dad had been gone for hours, almost a day even! We heard a knock on a door so we sprinted down the stairs almost certain that it was mum. As I was the oldest, I opened the door with an excited grin on my face but instead, there were two very serious looking policemen who looked like they were about to give some awful news I was thinking that they must of got the wrong house. In a sorrowful voice, they told me about mums’ death I had a look of confusion on my face it can’t be, but then it sunk in. My eyes started filling up with water and then a river of tears raced down my face. I dashed upstairs into my room and see the teddy bear mum had given me for my sixth birthday, then the family photo we had taken, everywhere we look reminds me of her.

Suddenly, the memory faded away. There’s no going back, she’s gone. Dead. Despite all that’s happened, I still have my beautiful brother and loving aunt. All I know is that they are the cement that go with the bricks to build my positive, powerful and strong future.

UP” my teacher shouted then the bell went, and it was a breaktime.

I went outside on the swings, I thought it be pleasant to go on the trampoline, with one bounce I was remined of my holy communion. It was sunny October day, and we had a bouncy castle in our garden. My dad set it up without me knowing. I invited all my friends and we had so much fun with my bouncy castle.

It was the end of school, I got home and sat on the couch. When my mum came in, she asked “How was school?” I said “Interesting”. “Did you have fun” she said. “Lots of it” I said paralyzed. I went to my room saying “Oh, and it wasn’t school -it was memory lane”.

Scrooge Analysis

Description

When describing Scrooge, Dickens uses many techniques, such as similes. A simile in the first paragraph is, ‘hard and sharp as flint’ this means that Scrooge is tough and that he cuts everybody out. Flint is used as a weapon which means Scrooge’s words could hurt people.

Another technique is metaphors, an example is, ‘but he was a tight-fisted hand at the grindstone’ which means he doesn’t give away money and he doesn’t like spending money. Another technique used in this extract is alliteration, an example is, ‘secret, self-contained and solitary’ this shows that he is cut off form everyone, he is lonely, and he doesn’t like being open with people. When Dickens describes Scrooge’s face, he uses words like, ‘red eyes, thin blue lips’, when it says red eyes it shows Scrooge gets angry and is threatening.

Action

When Dickens are writing the third paragraph, he is showing Scrooge’s interactions with others. In the paragraph it shows that no one talks to Scrooge, people find him scary so nobody stopped to talk to him, nobody asked him for money if people saw him, they would dodge him. Dickens uses the adjective melancholy which means sad, which is a powerful word he repeats it too. This emphasises the fact has really sad and beguiled means pass time which shows that Scrooge has nothing to do except work. When Dickens is writing the actions of Scrooge he focus on repetition by saying he does the same every night as it says he checks his bank book every night, and he never changes his routine.

Dialogue

Scrooge says Bah! Humbug! Whenever he doesn’t know what to say. Dickens uses rhetorical questions such as, ‘what right have you to be merry?’ This means Scrooge doesn’t like it when people are merry and to show the difference between him and his nephew. His nephew is happy, whereas he isn’t. Dickens use reporting clauses like returned meaning come back.

VANDAL’S HAIR IS HER UNDOING!

Price: 3 Magic Beans

In the month of May 2022, in the village of Goldenglen, various tower structures were vandalized and demolished. For quite some time the perpetrator has evaded capture from the police. Luckily, on the first of June at 12:01 AM the vandal was caught. Her name? Rapunzel, who had previously disappeared from the public eye three months ago.

Somehow, Miss Rapunzel had managed to sneak past the security of many towers; some even deemed the deed impossible. The police still have no leads on how she did it. Resident Gretel (20) of Sugar Lane said, “In the early vandalisms, my brother Hansel said she must have bribed the guards to step aside. I thought he was off his rocker!”. A tower fan, Rumpelstiltskin (62) angrily quoted, “That woman who has done that is vulgar! I ought to smack her with my tower picture book!”

A witness to the arrest of Rapunzel was PC Little Bear. He said his fellow policemen were checking on the Aurora Tower when they saw her climbing up the famous building. She had a bandana wrapped around her mouth so she wouldn’t inhale the spray paint and her long hair was wrapped around the tip of the tower so she would stay

The Fairy Guardian

aloft. She saw the squad and she got herself down quickly. Fortunately, when Rapunzel was running away, she tripped on her hair (since she had not had the time to tie it up) and got herself wrapped in a cocoon like shape. Thankfully the police managed to arrest her.

Miss Rapunzel has been in a knot with crime

After a long period of vigorous, skilled questioning the police found out the truth; she was the missing Rapunzel. Miss Rapunzel accepts any claims of vandalism and says she did this of her own accord. “I did it all. I enjoyed every single second of destroying your prissy little towers.” She said this statement while being detained at Goldilock’s Prison. Currently, all the defaced towers are being thoroughly cleaned and the demolished ones are being rebuilt.

Amid all this, records have come up that when Rapunzel was younger, she was detained by a sorceress. Many believe this to be true and say the have video footage of Rapunzel being kidnapped. This footage has not been revealed yet.

There has been no voice on this theory from either Rapunzel or the sorceress. If so, would the witch be prosecuted, and Rapunzel’s.

Kunle Barker Visit

On the 3 November, Year 6 were extremely lucky to meet the amazing, Kunle Barker. He is a property owner and works for an architectural firm. As well as this, he has been on the television many times and has recently made an eco-home to help the environment, he even went to BMS himself! As you may have heard recently in the news, COP26 is happening in Glasgow, which is in England, this month. If you did not know this is a conference held each year to discuss plans and make agreements on helping our world, as we are in a climate crisis.

Kunle is going to COP26 this month, so decided to come visit BMS on his way and talk to some of the students about keeping a sustainable world, how we can do so and the things we can do. All of us in Year 6 have learned many things from him that we can do to help, but these are few things you can do to make our planet a better place! Firstly, when you are taking a shower at home, make sure that you don’t use boiling hot water and stay in there for the least time possible as we must save water to help the earth, and minimise our carbon footprint. Also, try your best to not travel by car when making short journeys to places as they release lots of emissions which damage our atmosphere. Instead try to travel by bike or walk to places! Even travelling by public transport makes a difference!

It was a pleasure to have the chance to meet such a brilliant person like Kunle and hopefully we can all make a difference on the Earth to make it a better and more sustainable place. Kunle is also launching his own campaign after COP26, which I’m confident that he will be successful with it! Thank you from everyone in Year 6!

The Roman Army

The Roman army was a sophisticated arm who worked together to invade and rule other countries and increase its empire. The Romans used influences from other armies to build a bigger and better force. The Roman army started small but soon grew larger into a full time occupational force and its control reached a long way from its base in Rome.

• The Roman Army was key to Rome’s success in building its empire.

• In the beginning, the soldiers were better off citizens who were sent home at the end of each war.

• The Romans copied Greek armies and fought on foot with long spears.

• As the army grew, lots of things changed. They were no longer sent home at the end of each battle, being a soldier became a full time job where the soldiers were well trained and tough.

• Soldiers were paid regular wages.

• The soldiers would do a drill every day, twice if he was a recruit.

• The Roman soldiers wore a woolen tunic that had short sleeves and came down to just above their knees.

• To protect himself in battle, he also wore a metal helmet and had metal plates protecting his upper body.

• The Roman soldier carried a wooden shield and fought with a short sword called a Gladius and a dagger or one or more throwing spears, called Javelins.

• The Romans ruled Britain from Forts and for many years kept an army of 55,000 soldiers in Britain.

Sophie the Vampire Maid

One Monday morning, Ada was waiting patiently for her food. Until suddenly she saw an odd girl working in the kitchen with Mrs Beat’em.

The odd girl, was actually Sophie. She was a vampire maid that works in the kitchen. She was extremely tall for her age, so whenever she was cooking, she has to duck all the time to complete any meals!

She wore a lovely, frilly, black and white dress with polished, strapped boots. On top of her head, she had midnight black pigtails with bobbles the same colour as

Demonic Daniel

As Ada crept up the creaky, wooden stairs leading to the attic, she heard a quiet mumble. Wanting to find out where the noise was coming from, she burst through the door and saw a boy, sitting on a dusty old bed. Glancing up at the ceiling above the bed she saw a wooden sign saying, ‘Demonic Daniel’ in pure white letters.

Ada walked towards Daniel and noticed that he had dust all over his face. Her eyes moved to a black anvil with a hammer. In the corner of the room was a hot furnace which was burning iron. On the anvil, she noticed a half-finished axe.

Then Ada turned to face Daniel, it was evidently clear that she did not like him.

her hair. Pearly white fangs could be seen in her mouth, but her normal teeth were yellow. Sophie has eyes as brown as mud and log spikey eyelashes.

Ada was creepily looking at Sophie who was gently sweeping the floor back and forth. Sophie caught Ada looking at her so she quickly approached Ada.

‘My… n-n-name is S-S-Sophie,’ she said quietly.

‘Oh, uh, my name is Ada. Sorry for watching you weirdly. But I’ve never seen a vampire in the kitchens before!’

‘Who are you and how did you get into this house?’ Ada said.

‘I don’t know,’ Daniel said. ‘I’ve lived here all my life. Well, I am pretty certain I have.’

Daniel, who was quite tall, had very bright, blue eyes which gleamed in the sunlight. His forehead was covered in a thick layer of messy brown hair which covered his eyes.

Ada then told Daniel to come with her. Reluctantly, Daniel followed her down to the garden. He walked slowly, with a bit of a limp. He didn’t really like talking, so just answered with small, soft grunts.

Cop 26 (The Conference of the Parties)

We considered the purpose and the role of the conference in our Humanities lessons on ’Threats to our Environment’.

Cop 26 is all about tackling climate change. Many world leaders signed what is called the Paris Agreement to limit global warming all around to the world. They want to reach something called Net Zero, which is being carbon neutral. Carbon Neutral means that as many greenhouse gases as possible can be taken out of the ozone layer. If this can’t happen, they should all try and help prevent more greenhouse gases and carbon emissions from getting in our ozone layer.

For Cop26, many world leaders have taken their time to come to Glasgow to participate. People like Boris Johnson and Joe Biden have come to take a stand against climate change. There are some ideas of hydrogen as a source of energy that have been thought about. People are always thinking of ways to reduce how much energy we use to help climates get better for us globally. If we all could change our ways, just like our world leaders want us to, the world could be much healthier.

Year 6 Trip To The Kitchens

On The 23rd Of November, the class of 6CH went to the kitchen for a very interesting lesson and I would like to share it with you. 6CH had a talk with the deputy manager for the BMS kitchen named Johnathan, who if you are a student of BMS, you might get your plates and cutlery handed to you by him. He gave us so much information on our kitchen, I and others learnt so much about how the food is local, eco and how large of an area they use for preparation. There are a few things we might not notice but are very important to know, for example all the food is local and nearby so that is amazing by helping local companies. An intriguing fact I learnt, was how much water is actually used to make dinner, the roast takes so much water because almost everything is cleaned or boiled in water. 6CH class had so many questions for the kitchen staff, things like ‘What do you refuse to use in the kitchen?’ or ‘Did the water bill go down when you took away the water jugs?’. Johnathan was extremely helpful and answered most of these questions, the first answer was the kitchen does not use nuts for allergy reasons and they are trying to work with a company

to stop using plastic sandwich boxes and change to cardboard or recyclable materials. Another answer was that the water jugs were taken away for covid reasons, not the water bills, but they are getting rid of very high water usage appliances.

The kitchen is also trying new recipes to make more balanced meals and there are a lot of chefs who spend a long time making a child’s lunch because there are so many pupils. 6CH was lucky enough to go into the kitchen and see what the prep stations were like. We met some chefs as well. It was incredible to see how much they do for the school and how hard they work.

Things in the kitchen were very large like mixing bowls were 3 times the size of a normal one and it was just so amazing and quite inspiring to see how you can change things to be better for our home and planet but still make great things happen! I and 6CH really hope you enjoy hearing about our visit. We hope you might see the kitchen sometime too, maybe even try to make your own kitchen more eco-friendly! We had such a great time and a lovely talk.

Vega Jane

When Math’s finally finished, Vega strolled out of the door and into the corridor full of joyful, cheerful and smiling children. Vega hated it. Suddenly silence descended upon the corridor, people shrank into their lockers and teachers went back into their classrooms. Vega’s piercing eyes glared like green fireballs. She confidently strode down the hall, her leaf coat flowing behind her and her fur dress swaying as she moved. Vega’s hair hit someone in the face in a mess of curly black to white ombre hair. Her mixed-race skin attracted boys, her personality made them think twice. Her mouth frozen into an eternal grimace. No one dared to mess with her. I mean why would they, everyone knows the story of Libby-Alexandra Gates, who messed with Vega and was forced to leave the country.

A voice rang out through the silence. No one EVER dared to make a noise during Vega’s presence. Vega spun on her heel to see the person. Petra Petsite or as

Halloween moon

I sit in the sky and orbit the earth

Waiting, anticipating for anything to see of worth Halloween by far my favourite night

Watching people get a fright

Pumpkins carved smiling and scowling

While grim reapers, devils and werewolves are prowling

The broomsticks dancing through the sky and on the back witches cackling

In the distance, fireworks were laughing and crackling

As the children go to bed and take off their disguise I smile and wait for my friend, the sun to rise.

Vega branded her Petti Petra. Vega strode over shoving everyone in her way. Eventually she reached her.

“I’m going to make your life the most down casted life anyone’s ever had!” boomed Vega.

“W-w-wh-why do you always pick on me? There are 315 other kids in the school. Why m-m-m-me?” stuttered Petra.

“Because I know what you’re going to do about it,” replied Vega calmly. Everyone was scared Vega never said anything calmly.

“What?” asked Petra in an inaudible voice.

“NOTHING!” snapped Vega.

“I know your secret,” whispered Petra.

Vega turned around slowly and punched Petra as hard as she could. Petra lay on the floor: down, hit, knowing she should never have spoken in the first place.

Christmas Production

At the beginning of December Bedford Modern Junior School performed their first Christmas Production in front of a live audience in two years. ‘Bethlehem the Musical’ is a retelling of the traditional Christmas tale, including the fun, comedic backstory of how the residents of Bethlehem respond to a sudden influx of new people who have come to register for the census. Panic sets in as innkeepers put up their prices, businesses compete for new customers and Mary and Joseph struggle to find a room for the night. Meanwhile, Gran spies her opportunity to find her soulmate in the little town of Bethlehem.

But it did not start here, of course. After seven weeks of rehearsals, it finally came to the long-awaited production

week. The production week itself proved to be exhilarating yet exhausting. By Tuesday morning, we found ourselves already performing to our first audience of the entire Bedford Modern Junior school. I went on stage feeling confident, but soon that turned to embarrassment as I realised I had forgotten my ukulele (an essential prop for a busker!). Fortunately this was just the dress rehearsal. Thankfully things got better from there, as all the performances went down well with family and friends.

A big thank you to: Mrs Gale for the costumes, Mr Bishop and his talented band and Mrs Garton, Mrs Phillips and Mrs Pacyna for putting it all together.

Is Santa Real?

4:02 AM… My eyes open sharply, I turned over to my iPad illuminating the time and the exciting date. “Christmas!” I screamed in my head. I thrusted my covers off of me and opened the door vigorously to see stacks of presents by my door.

I stepped out onto the landing then, THUD! I tripped and even the deepest sleeper must have heard me. But, to my surprise, no one came. Shaking it off, I crept downstairs and opened the door to see even more presents under the calmingly lit Christmas tree. Then, pieces of coal debris started falling down from the chimney. Was it Santa? I asked myself. No, it can’t be! I snapped back. Worrying what my mind would think of next, I raced upstairs and went back to sleep.

My eyes shuttered open, it was now around 7:30 AM. Still thinking about what happened earlier. I was eight at the time and was starting to get too old to believe in Santa. Moving my thoughts aside, I went into my mum’s room to see my sister (Iris) already opening gifts. I clenched my fists in anger but I covered my rage with a weak smile. Opening all my presents and being more than pleased with them. But there was no time for gratitude because I was soon whizzed off to my Auntie’s. Unfortunately, Iris had to come too.

When I arrived, I was greeted by the warm smile of my Auntie Cat and the beaming excitement of my two cousins, Alex and Thea. My Granny and Grandad were looking like they were going to give me a hug but seemed to change their mind last minute. Then my uncle slowly reached out his hand to give me an awkward fist- bump, but put away his hand before I could put out my own.

We ate a more of a brunch than a traditional turkey, but with pancakes and pastries galore so I wasn’t one bit fussed. We played, talked and celebrated late into the evening. By 21:30 we thought we better get going. We called a taxi as we were all tired.

We got home at around 21:45. I was the first to get in. I put up my coat and I will spare you the details of how I put away my shoes. I walked into the kitchen to and saw a note on the countertop. It read, ‘Hope you are enjoying your presents, Santa.’ It couldn’t have been my family because one, it wasn’t anyone’s handwriting and two, everyone was out all day at my Auntie’s. Maybe Santa is real after all.

Recount - My Olympic Stadium Experience

As I entered the kitchen, my Dad explained that I had a hockey tournament next Sunday. I replied with a cheer as I loved playing hockey. It was going to be the highlight of my weekend. My team (Leighton Buzzard Hockey Club) had not been beaten this year so far, we were a great team and were entering as strong contenders to win. It was now the second Sunday of October 2019 and day of the Oakley Hockey Tournament. I arrived hearing chatter, the sound of stick hitting ball and coaches trying to get their players to listen. I put in my gum shield, put on my lucky glove and slid my stick out of my bag. I observed how the other teams played then got a ball and started to practice. Getting ready for the tournament to start.

The first game began, as I was passed the ball from the centre and passed it out wide, Oakley - our not so great opponent – let in three well worked goals but scored one – very scrappy – goal against us. The other games against Flitwick and Aspley Guise were a breeze (2-0 and 4-2) making us top of our group and onto the finals. As our coach came to congratulate us, he announced that we are going to play at the Hockey Olympic Stadium. WOW! My team and I cheered. I felt so lucky to have this great opportunity. I looked over at our opponents for the final (Shefford and Sandy) who were cheering – looked like they’re going too. The coach said not to get too far ahead of ourselves we still have a final to play, we all put our serious faces, ready to win. The game was tough as they played dirty. We passed the ball around and scored two quick goals, 2-0. They scored one scrappy goal then another, 2-2. I was passed the ball and wanted to do something special so I skilled past three players and smacked the ball through the keeper’s legs. GOOAALL!!! I was over the moon to score the goal of this tense final, but the game wasn’t over, Shefford and Sandy started with

great determination but everyone helped defend and with one final clearance… we won! Onto the Olympic stadium. The medal ceremony was filled with cheers, photos and achy cheeks. It was great.

The build up to the Olympic stadium was filled with nerves and excitement. We had one very tense training session. We all were told to take it easy for the next few days so as not to risk injuring ourselves. I also felt very lucky and showed off a bit at school.

Before I knew it Sunday had arrived. My Dad and I woke up at the crack of dawn to leave because we had to drive all the way to London. I slept on the drive there and when we arrived, I was speechless - the stadium looked incredible, as I looked around in awe. There were parents sitting in the stands and players practicing. I took a deep breath and ran over to where my team were practicing.

The first game we lost but it was incredibly close. The next we lost again (4-2) but I scored – win? The whole team felt like the journey was over but decided to go all out in the next game. We stepped onto the pitch meaning business. The game started and I immediately tackled the ball from the opposition and skilled past one player and passed the ball away. The ball was passed back and I scored. GOAL! 1-0 to us. We scored again then they scored (2-1 to us) all of this in the first five minutes. The rest of the game was filled with a series of close calls and near misses. The final whistle blew, and we all had mixed emotions. Our journey was over. The end of the tournament and we finished sixth.

I have to say it was different losing. I should have enjoyed every moment and been proud of how far we had come.

Ada meets Lady Lavinia

Ada was feeling confident. Her father had explained there was a new guest, which was unusual for her father. She crept quietly along the damp corridor clutching her cold candlestick engraved with her mother’s initials P.G.

“Halt! Who goes there?” an extremely attractive voice yelled. Ada jumped. Who would be walking around at midnight? Then, out of the blackness, a lady appeared.

“My name is Lady Lavinia, child. And WHAT do you think you’re doing here?” she hissed angrily. Her eyes glowed like the night on her pale, translucent face and her ebony hair was let loose. She was evil. She was clever too, which scared Ada. She wore far too much makeup and her face dripped with it, especially her thin, sour lips covered in black lipstick. She looked sly, and she explained casually how she stole her necklaces from her sister. Ada was shocked. Lady Lavinia also had an inky black handbag with matching jet-black pearls which was her mother’s. She looked sad when she said it and Ada wondered if it was her imagination or not but did this lady have the same problem with her mother? Perhaps she wasn’t so bad underneath. She started dabbing some blush on her white nose and she went back to her carefree self. Her long black fingernails dug into Ada’s skin and she obviously loved painting them black like the sky. Her clothing was very tidy and slim, making her look and act flirty. Little ghosts followed her everywhere because they were her servants. Suddenly, the candle flashed and went out. Ada screamed but soon found her lips being closed as Lady Lavinia closed her fingers together. Then she rummaged around in herhandbag and brought out one of her many spray bottles. She used the perfume labelled. “Ew, Dew Vampire De Perfume” which smelled like rotten eggs and dead fish.

Ada grimaced and personally hated the smell. She wanted to tell this lady exactly what she thought of her.

The Roundabout Skiing Holiday

I haven’t been for three years. We usually go to France, but we couldn’t go there this year, so we went to Italy, but you had to get a covid test sadly, but we were with friends as well, so ‘yay!’.

In the morning we had to go to get a covid test ‘I hate them mum’, I said but we got them, and it was as quick as a flash then we had to do some extra packing ,like always my brother was jumping off the walls he was so excited to fly to Italy.

Then we got to the airport, and we suddenly got on the plane because us and our friends were almost the only people there. When we got there, I was so tired, but we had to go on a two-hour road trip. We eventually got to the hotel, and I fell asleep straight away.

The next morning (yawning) we got up and I got dressed to ski and we then had breakfast and went to the ski hire shop to get our skis. Next to get a cable car up to the top of the mountain.

We went to ski school our teacher was called Pablo, he was nice. It was so exciting because I was on the highest

level of ski school -gold. I had so much fun but when it finished my dad came running to me saying ‘Isabella your mum has injured her leg badly ‘ he then rushed my mum to the hospital!

Later I was upset about what happened so everybody said ‘ Let’s go to have lunch’ that made me happy again and my mum soon called saying that she was okay. We then did some more runs and had a great day with a party in the night.

Have you ever been skiing?

The Day from Hell!

It was the day all my family was dreading, except my dad, he couldn’t wait. The day we had to leave the Lake District to drive home.

Fist I woke up to my dad shouting “WAKE UP!” my sisters replied back “Ok” in a kind of ‘I’m not gonna’ do that’ voice. The dogs were howling at each over and my mum was searching for a hair clip. I woke up, made my bed, and packed my bag. Then I got dressed and brushed my teeth.

Once everyone was ready, we had to pack the car, the worst! You never would know if you would get your bag in the car. One of the bags hit me in the nose, my sisters were rushing to get their bags in, but I got in before them. It was a time of anger in our house. Have you ever been in that situation?

We finally left, in a car full of bags. Any second, they could fall. My dad did his boring thing of going to Costa and putting rubbish away. While we drove back you could see the landscape, less hilly and not as many animals. We stopped off ONCE in a five-hour journeyit was basically torture. You had to train to survive in the car.

We finally got home, running upstairs to put bags away. Then –‘Jamie come and do this ‘ and ‘Jamie do that’ then ‘Jamie, one more thing’, (I heard that one around ten times). The dogs were running places they shouldn’t, then I had finally finished unpacking.

We finished the day with some pizza then went to bed. My mum never found the hair clip in the end. That was the day from hell.

The Sinking of The Empire by Joan

“We ran out of battery! Can someone go and turn on the generator?” the intercom blasted out at full volume before going back to its normal buzzing noise. “I told you to fix that!” I growled to my friend, Tom. He was the onboard engineer. “I’m worried about how to get to the generator” he replied. “WHY” I shouted. “Because we need a lift to get to the generator, and there is no battery. So...” “We can’t turn it on” I said wearily. In the bridge, chaos was the perfect word to describe the noise. The Empire had been sinking for the past 20 minutes, and no-one was bothered about it. They were panicking because the crew couldn’t get to the generator. And that was why there was an Apache helicopter above them. “EMPTY THE BALLASTS,” the captain shouted.

A Visitor’s Guide to Berk

For generations this stunning island been inhabited by Vikings. For years people have searched for this place. Berk is an island buried in mystery, exploration and quests. Welcome to the Isle of Berk, your Viking journey awaits.

Caliban Caves

Start your quest at these amazing caverns. With everything from stalactites to rare bats, you won’t get bored exploring these natural wonders. If you want the most out of the best, these are the caves for you.

Hooligan Village

Next up, the village has more to offer than ever! Take a peek at the (slightly terrifying) Chief of the Hairy Hooligan tribe, Stoick the Vast, or if you like something slightly gentler, then take a stroll around the historic portrait hall. When you’re feeling peckish, visit the seafood stalls, or go to the Big Axe Tavern for some more options or a taste of authentic Viking cuisine.

Wild Dragon Cliff

A trip to Berk isn’t complete without visiting this cliff. The root of dragon culture, Wild Dragon Cliff is a treasure trove waiting to be unlocked. If three thousand dragons isn’t the best way to experience life on the edge, what is? You can’t miss this opportunity to see actual dragons was they play, sleep, work and explore. This tripe is not recommended for people with Lizard allergies.

Highest Point

With it being the tallest peak in all of Berk, this mountain is a challenge to climb, but when you make it, believe me it will have been worth it. When you are the top, you’ll be rewarded with incredible views and maybe even the sight of hundreds of dragons flying over you! Now that’s what I call magical.

“Done cap’n!” A crew member said.

As Tom lowered me down the shaft, I kept on reminding myself that all I was doing was going under a 2-tone mini submarine to turn on the generator. We had to get under the pool mechanism, and then find the generator switch. Once I turned my torch on, I saw a wave roaring towards me. I tried to scream, but I fainted in time to not see what the ‘wave’ was.

When I woke up, I realized I was in the Med Bay. There was a hum, which I recognized as the engines. The intercom suddenly crackled on. “We have a code 2 in airlock 3. Oh, and thank you to Tom Crindel for restarting the engine.” Suddenly there was a bang, a sinking feeling, and I blacked out again.

Puffin Point

Last but definitely not least, its… Puffin Point! If you are a keen birdwatcher, or just like all things cute, this is your will see, must see spot. The most puffins all or Berk, you can’t miss it. A birdwatching cabin allows you to see them without getting too close to those beaks… anyway, this is the perfect way to end the day.

Meet the locals

Fishlegs

Often found walking around the village, or training his dragon Horrorcow, in his tiny back garden, Fishlegs is Hiccup’s best friend and can’t really be relied own to get you out of somewhere if it involves dragons. If it doesn’t, then he might help you. Fishlegs hates being a Viking because everything is so rough. His fear is exile. It doesn’t look promising out there.

Stoick the Vast

You’ll definitely want to look out for the big chief (and Hiccup’s dad) on your travels around Berk. You can find him in the Big Axe tavern, or at home in his room, ruling the island from their house. Although he has to do Chief stuff he looks out for his sons as well.

Hiccup

Watch out for the adventurous young hero of Berk, Hiccup. Mostly found in his garden trying to train his dragon Toothless, or with Fishlegs. He likes to go to the green woods to dragonwatch in peace, he isn’t really the “I’ll-swing-my-axe-at-you-for-no-reason,” type you can go talk to him about Dragonese. He might even give you a lesson in it.

The Mystery

I strode confidentially through the ballroom, passing by all the extravagantly dressed men and women. I looked down to my wrist to check the time on my watch. 11:57 it read.

I sighed and turned back to the dance floor and watched for a few minutes. I glanced behind me, everyone was emptying the ballroom door, only a few guests stayed with the same look of confusion on their face to see the sudden emptiness of the hall.

I decided to go and look at what the people were causing a commotion about, as I anxiously shuffled out of the open door the loud voices really intensified. I slithered through the crowd to get to the front. I admired the gorgeous woman everyone was gaping at; her dress was made of satin and the sash that she had wrapped around her waist has made of luxurious Egyptian cotton. The hem was covered in layers of elegant, floral lace and the halter neck was embroidered on the edges. Her hair was pushed back into a bun and a jewel incrusted hair slide sat on the side of her bun. I was then shoved out of the way by a man holding a camera. Before I could catch another glimpse of the woman, the police covered her dead body with a sheet.

An Unpleasant Night

A fox ran away as Fletcher Renn appeared out of nowhere. He knew there was no time to waste, so he took in his surroundings hurriedly. He was in the garden of an old Victorian house on the edge of a forest. He heard a wail coming from inside. It was cut short. He knew she was here. Instead of doing what the right side of his brain was saying, he went inside. He called her name, knowing she wouldn’t answer. He decided to head for the place the scream came from. He quickly found it and stayed calm as he saw the corpse. He knew a being of her power had done this with her hands. He felt the air shift. She was here.

The cold air had been biting at his fingers for hours, but only now did he realise. He could taste the crisp air in his lungs as a crack of moonlight broke the darkness. He saw her, her clothes torn and bloodstained. She grinned and he knew he should run.

She slowly came closer, but it was like he was glued to the floor, he couldn’t run. She was right in front of him now. She laughed as she kicked him, and he howled in pain and crumpled to the ground. Taking hostages showed weakness, yet nothing about her was weak.

The Graveyard

I stood there. The bitter cold biting at my skin. My red cloak billowed behind me as I breathed in and out. The floor beneath my feet wascobbled and had moonlit puddles on the edge of the road. On my right was a dilapidated Victorian church, the windows reflecting the moon above me. The wall and rails were biting cold as I ran my hands over the surfaces. I could just see the gravestones inside the grounds, like the clouds they too cast shadows.

My urge to run was more noticeable than ever but I was slowly moving forward. The damp air was biting my cheeks and I nervously pulled my scarf over my face. The cold air was in my mouth along with a taste of blood it sent a chill down my spine. I really hoped my friends would find me.

Looking across the street I saw a tall, black shadow. As I walked forward in my clumpy boots, the shadow moved towards me. Suddenly I was being dragged by my feet as my eyes started to shut. Was this the end of me?

Later I nervously sat up a saw the same shadow above me, so feeling the crunch of grass beneath my feet I quickly got up. I wanted to run but the shadow was moving faster. It moved closer and closer. From the depths of his black billowing cloak, he drew a knife, that was long, sharp, and terrifying.

Scene setting

I saw an old, abandoned church. I could feel cold, hard stone on my back and as I heard the crows squawking, it sent a shiver down my spine. It didn’t feel right to be here. I began to panic. I could pretty much taste the fear – I could smell the sadness of the building and I was certain that someone was watching me.

How to Make a Paper Lantern

You will need:

- a friend or helper

- red card

- yellow card

- a glue stick

- scissors

- thin red strip of card

Method:

1. Firstly, fold the red card landscape.

2. Secondly, unfold the red card and then fold the long edges in approximately one inch.

3. Next, cut until you get to the fold line. Do not make them too thin or thick and repeat this process.

4. Now, you might need your friend. Get your yellow card and place the red card on top of it. Your friend can place their hand on top of the red card while you glue the bottom edge of the red card to the yellow card. Do the same with the other edge.

5. After that, you will have a yellow gap on the right-hand side and you should put glue on it.

6. Afterwards, roll and stick the red card to the yellow card.

7. Finally, put glue on each end of the thin red strip of card and write your name on it. Glue it to the top inside of the lantern.

Hang up your lantern and you can celebrate Chinese New Year – the Year of the Tiger!

A War to Die for

“Oi, George get the paper,’’ Pa screamed as I was playing with Henry, who was clutching onto his blue silk comforter. I claimed down the stairs and opened the front door ‘’ Cheers chum,’’ I thanked the paper boy. I picked up the paper quickly scanning the part about Parliament and turned it over to see the headlines, WAR, it read in bold letters. “Ma, Pa, we are at war with Germany.”

“We are at war, really?” Pa questioned longing for excitement, “I’m off to join the army.”

“No, you’re not!” Ma argued. I quickly left the room before the arguing got worse.

Henry and I heard the arguing go on for what set seemed like an eternity until Ma ended it with, “You’re blind, you can’t go!”

“Oh yeah, well at least George can go,” Pa pleaded, “What!?” I interrupted “I have asthma, I can barely breathe and I’m shaking already!” I burst out of the front door to find Richard and Will. “Have you heard?” Richard asked.

“What, about the war? Yeah,” I replied. “We’re going,” he continued, “Are you? Your Pa will be awfully proud.” That sparked something in me, Pa basically living his life through my eyes – because his eyes aren’t working – “I’ll sleep on it,” I said…

And so I did. The next day I was feeling a lot better and decided - after a lot of thinking – to join up, because there are so many great posters saying how I will become a hero and lots of women will fall in love with me. On the way to the town hall, I kept on telling myself that I can do this. I met up with Rich and Will to join, we stepped up to the recruiting Sergeant. Richard went first and he was easily let through, so was Will. I knew I had to lie and say I was 18 so I dragged my feet to the Sergeant and said, “I am George Bucket, and I am 18.” The Sergeant didn’t reply for a while and then spoke up, “Go on then.” Yes, I was in! As I walked home, I thought of how Pa proud be. I slowly opened the door and spoke barely above a whisper, “I am soldier!”

“Well done, my boy,” Pa was pleased, but it was Ma that did not answer. “It’ll be over by Christmas, and I get sixpence a day,” I said nervously, but still no answer, “I’ll become a national hero and get a wife, according to the posters.” But still no answer, “And I will become a man,” Ma just went to her room. I could hear her sobbing, but I can’t change the past. Before I left, I cut a patch of Henry’s comforter to keep and gave him a kiss, which may be his last.

I reported to training camp just two days after. We met our Sergeant, Sergeant Lean but we call him Sergeant Mean – because he is. In training, he would boss us about teaching us to use guns and fight like men. After a few days of hard tough graft, we got our uniform. To be honest, I was disappointed with the uniform. I was expecting red not mucky brown - yuck – anyway, I put it on and I was lucky to even get a uniform, some soldiers didn’t.

We got a boat to France which seemed worse than swimming, there was no room to move. When we were in France we took a train, on the train there was singing and

laughing, and I was actually enjoying it. On the train I took out the patch of Henry’s comforter and sewed it on my uniform to keep.

When we got to the trenches, I heard bombs going off and bullets zooming everywhere. In the trenches we were shown where we’ll be sleeping. “Here, that’s your bed Bucket,” the Sergeant barked. I was fine with where I would be sleeping because I would be next to Will. “Why is my bed covered in holes and mud?” Will asked.

“I am just glad we are not the front line yet,” I sighed. I got out of the dug out and looked through the periscope, “Aaah,” I screamed, “Why is the ground moving?” I said, as I backed away into the dugout, “I’m going to have a kip,” I groaned.

I woke up to hear bullets zooming above my head and distanced bombs being fired. “Nice kip?” asked Will, looking half frozen.

“Bit hard to sleep when there’s a leak above my head, shooting down a thousand drops of rain a second – they feel harder than the Kaisers bullets, right?” I whispered rubbing my tired dirty eyes.

“Look lively now!” Sergeant Mean barked, “You’ve barely done any hard graft today. These ruddy trenches won’t dig themselves, will they now?”

“More like muddy,” joked Richard.

“Sir, yes, Sir,” I replied regretfully, picking up my rifle pretending to aim it at Sergeant Mean when he turned away. “Don’t let him catch you doin’ that, we all know the punishment, running around the trenches in the rain, with your rifle above your head ‘n’ rats scuttling at your feet,” warned Richard.

“At least they could eat the cooties, easier than burning them off, right?” Will joined in, as I fell into the hole I had just dug. “Help please?” I asked, checking the patch was still fastened to my chest. Coughing and spluttering, Will helped me out, “Sorry it’s my asthma.” We carried on again.

After hour after hour we dug and dug until Sergeant Mean told us we were being moved up to the front line. I rubbed the comforter nervously, hoping it’ll be alright. “Come on,” Rich patted me on the back.

letters from home on my chest and bully beef on my bed. I tucked into my breakfast and spat it out, “Yuck,” I chucked the bully beef on the ground and left it. “Where’d they get that from? The latrines.” This time I tucked into my letters. Henry was missing me, and Ma’s been crying every day, Pa’s been very excited was the main contents. I quickly wrote a reply – focussing on the good so Ma doesn’t cause a flood!

“We’re goin’ up and over, lads,” Sergeant barked. I grabbed my rifle, shaking. I climbed up the ladder and ran as fast as I could into No Man’s land. I see soldiers

crying and rocking like Henry in holes. I look to my side and realise both Will and Richard are both down, doing that funny twirly dance. As I looked back, I felt a sharp sting in my chest, a bullet. Blood was rushing out onto the ground, and I was on the ground too. As I clasped onto the comforter, the only last thought I could want are those that are of Henry.

I had already gone up and over onto No Man’s Land, now I’m going up and over …into Heaven.

War of the Roses finaally Ends!

say that Henry won for good and it’s quite right that he won. What a historic couple of years this has been!

A new chapter for ‘How to Train Your Dragon’

Hiccup and Scldwa stared at the giant monstrosity there before their eyes. The tower was as large as a herd of fifty thousand elephants. Hiccup and Scldwa took a deep breath as they entered the tower door.

Big News!

After a long time of war, the soldiers come home!

Henry’s side won and Richard’s side lost with the fateful death of Richard.

Now King Henry finally takes the throne and Bosworth field, with a lot of dead, brave warriors, has Richard’s grave. BUT –there are some protesters saying that Richard should have won or at least deserved to, whilst others

Wallty’s War

Henry SHOULD be very worried about people invading and many believe he won’t last long – but we shall see. We imagine those who supported Richard will now be punished. Now the Wars of the Roses has finally ended, people can get back to their normal lives, apart from the many who have lost their loved ones.

Let the king take his throne.

– War correspondent

But, just as they stepped inside the door slammed shut! Hiccup and Scldwa were freaking out even Wolf Fang was as scared as they were! Walking up the stairs Hiccup said,”Hey, if we have tracked the dragons here doesn’t it mean more of the dragons might be here too?” Just then a bunch of the shadow eyed dragons popped out of nowhere and attacked them………Scldwa and Wolf Fang defeated the dragons whilst Hiccup grabbed onto a wooden pole and held on for dear life!!

When they finally reached the top they found Toothless and the other dragons trapped inside cages. As they were looking about a familiar face appeared from the darkness. It was Morgan Meathead. He grinned and said, ‘hello boys……as you can see the world is nowhere near perfect, but I am going to fix that!!’ He pulled out his sword and had Hiccup and Scldwa on the floor, Wolf Fang jumped forward and created a beam of light which made Morgan disappear . Toothless and the other dragons were immediately freed and all the shadow dragons returned to normal. Hiccup and Scldwa said there goodbyes and returned, with their dragons to Hooligan Village.

Wallty, (Walter Smith in full) was a sensible, sometimes silly, person, 17 years old originally from South London. He was excited and couldn’t wait to sign up because when he went there were loads of people cheering him on, then he went to sign up! He didn’t like adventures because he was an indoor person, but he thought that by the end of the war he would have a lot of friends, but would he…?

After he signed up, he went home and told his and dad.

“I’m fumin’ with you son- wait till your dad hears about this!” shouted mum as loud as a lion’s roar.

“Hear about what?” asked Walter’s dad.

“Nothing darling -just burnt my roast chicken.” replied Walter’s mum.

And his father walked out of the room.

“I’ve saved on this one son!” said Walter’s mum trying to calm down.

About three days later he got his uniform and he put it on when his dad went out for a walk.

“That fits you perfectly.” said his mum, pleased. “Thanks mum.” Walter replied

So, for the rest of the week, he rested and ate good food so when he went to the war, he had a good full belly. When he got there, Wallty was nervous (like we all are on the first day). He saw this swaddy and went up to him and spoke.

“Hello, my name is Walter Smith, Wallty for short what’s your name?” asked Wallty

“Walter Smyth” replied Walter Smyth.

“No, my name is Walter,” said Walter.

“Wait we are both called Walter?”

“Yes” said Walter Smyth.

“So, because we are both called Walter; Walter Smith will be called Walter 1 and Walter Smyth will be called Walter 2” figured out Walter 1.

After both Walters had introduced themselves, a while later both Walters were on a ship to France waving goodbye. Four hours later they were both on land in France. They went through some French villages then two hours later it was dark, so they got on the omnibus. After a while they took a walk to the trenches. When they got there, they saw the state of it. Loads of people said ‘We are not living in there… ‘. “Yep, you are!” said another solider.

“Look on the bright side, at least there is air conditioning when we are sleeping” said Walter 1 positively.

After a while they got sick of the food, killing people, hearing gun shots, the smell of fags, foot rot, rats, furious itching because of the lice and the uncomfortable squelchy mud that they were around all the time, in fact everything. But at least Walter 1 and 2 had not been killed- YET…!

The BMS Bot

Are you bored of school? Would you like someone or something to take your place? Then read on and find out more about the BMS Bot 4000.

First, you ned to turn the machine on. This is on a computer that you need to hide in your bedroom. It is powered by batteries so it should be able to go.

Next, you will need to program the robot to go to your school. Make sure your machine is wearing your uniform! Once there, it will find your space in class and pretend to be you.

Then, type to find a pen or pencil. It will open a pouch and out will come a pen or pencil to do your work. Fortunately, it will be able to write like you! If the teacher asks a question, you will search up the answer and tell the robot who will answer in your voice. Or, if you are doing sports, when you run you will be the fastest and probably exhausted but you the robot will not.

Finally, put the robot under your bed to charge so it is ready for the next day.

You will never be bored of school again!

Greedy, Grandpa Gingerbread

Yesterday, at approximately 7:13 at Blue Park Field The Gingerbread Man was unexpectedly reported dead. The Sun Police aren’t too sure how, but have seen people looking suspicious in public.

The Gingerbread Man lived an exciting life playing with friends in the fields. The Gingerbread Man (Tim) was baked 2 weeks before he was reported dead. The public have claimed there was a grandpa and a fox nearby when this happened. The fox said ‘It wasn’t me I promise I was walking to see my friend (Jerry) at the park in Surrey’ The police are unsure about this statement.

After talking to the owners who own the Blue Park Field The Sun Police have asked for Cctv to see this murder, and exactly who it was the committed this crime. It is said that Mrs Patel (the owner of the field) thinks it was the Grandpa. The police remain undecided on her opinion and are still trying to find out who committed the crime.

At 4:15 on the 14th of August ( 2 days after the crime)

The Sun Police have officially found footage of who killed The Gingerbread Man, confusingly the footage has come from a family friend, who lived 5 minutes away from the grandpa, who has been found by the police and he said that he was starving.

The police are wondering whether to send grandpa to prison for this assault on The Gingerbread Man, however some are saying ‘HE HAS BEEN FRAMED! R.I.P Gingerbread man’

War Games

Dear Ma, Pa and little Johnny, War isn’t too bad; I’ve made some chums in the trenches. I miss home terribly. How are all of you? We mainly eat bully beef, it’s not too bad but not half a good as you roast, Ma! Is Johnny signing up?

Lots of love,

Your loving sun and brother, Alan.

Ma and Pa’s eyes are bright with proudness and have large, wide smiles on their faces. I look up at the beautiful blue sky, my eyes shimmering more than ever as I peacefully watch the graceful larks in the sky. “I wish I was a bird,” I mutter to myself, hoping no one hears. Dragging me but the ear, Pa brings me into the dining room to finish off supper. Ma starts to speak with an infuriating frown. “If only you were more like your brother,” single drops of tears start to topple down my face. Pa abruptly comes in with, “we’re ashamed of you and proud of your brother, how can that be?” I cry myself to sleep that night that night but decide to join up, I must prove them wrong, prove everyone!

The next morning, I wake up with a tear-stained face, but quickly wash it off in the bathroom. Trying my best, I pick my best clothes, and then march off to the recruitment office, there I see my best friend Harry, surrounded by a crowd of girls (as always). The cheers from spectators almost deafen me! I see a couple of lads I know, joining up together, like the local football team and some shopkeepers too! I’m surrounded by posters telling me to join up. I feel almost intimidated. As I sign up I feel guilty for lying, so I put on an awkward smile, the officer smirks when I sat in 18, I wonder if he can yell I’m 15?

Training was excruciating, the exercises left me breathless. We swear a sickening brown uniform - it’s s’posed to be red! I even had to wear my own trousers and the boys picked on me for it. They taught us how to fight, march, use our weapons and follow commands. I miss home terribly and regret signing up. They all say well be home but Christmas which is good! We travelled to France on boat and bus, I had a little cry to myself on the boat. When we arrived and got out of the busses, everything suddenly seemed so real.

The bombs are blazing, the guns are screeching, we’re here, it’s began. I’m shocked! We have to dig our own trenches, oh how terrible it is! My hands are shaking, I long to be back home with everyone. Once we finish, we sit down around a fire and sing some songs. I pour some brew into a metal flask and bump into a round, jolly man

with rosy cheeks and a button nose. “Hello,” I whisper quietly, the man looks me up and down and then replies, “Oh hello swaddle,” he pauses, “I’m Albert – you?” he has a look of reassurance on his face, which reminds me of Alan. “I’m Johnny, come from Bletchley, and am uh,” I think for a second, should I lie? “18, yes 18!” He doesn’t look convinced but goes with it anyway. “So, Johnny from Bletchley, what do ya think about these cooties, I’m itching like mad!” I nod and then smile. I wish there were more people like Albert in this world, if there was we wouldn’t have this ruddy war!

Today, I had my first helping of bully beef. Disgusting. Utterly disgusting. Just as in about to take a kip (even though it’s the afternoon), someone screams gas attack, I panic and then rapidly out on my gas mask, I run to a private space and shut my eyes tight, waiting for it to all to be over. Cautiously, I open my eyes and am surrounded by mocking faces, laughing like they’re dollally, amongst all the others I see Harry in the centre making rude comments. There’s a rather large rat which scurries by and after a little while a smaller rat comes past trying it’s best to catch up, just like Alan and me. I shiver and think of home and how much I miss it. Then, I have a right go at Harry for tricking me and refuse to ever talk to ever talk to him again. Tears race down my face instantly and regret all I said. We stay in the trenches for weeks so soon enough it becomes your home and I’ve just lost my best friend, my brother even. “Private Jones!” he bellows, “Jones sniper duty. NOW!!” Sergeant Stanley looks furious with me so; I wipe my tears away and start. As I stare down at the ground, I see piles of dead bodies, so I scrunch my eyes up in horror. A bullet goes over my head and hits Harry’s head. There’s a sudden gasp. There right in front of me is my best friend’s dead body. My palms are sweating, and heart is pounding I can’t believe it, he’s gone. Dead, and it’s all my fault. I’m being pointed at, glared at and all there’s left to do is whimper about my own mistake. It’s time, the hour, the minute, the second I’ve been dreading. “Men get your weapons out; we’re going up and over.” Sergeant Stanley declares, my hands are trembling. I know I won’t make it, I’m sure of it, I love you ma, Pa and most of all Alan, please never forget me. BANG! All I can hear is a whirring sound in my head. I spend my final seconds, gazing up at the sky, watching the graceful larks float above my tear-filled eyes. I take one last breath, close my eyes, and fall into an eternal sleep.

EXPLODING ENCHANTRESS TAKES TO THE SKIES!

PRICE:10 Chocolate Shillings

Several witnesses spotted a figure that resembled a witch, catapulted across the clear blue skies of yesterday afternoon. Bystanders described the event as, “Well, it was all very calm to begin with, until she blew, blew into the bluest of blueberries!”

In the nearby town of Miltonberg, lived two twin stepsiblings, Hansel and Gretel. They had been sent out by their mother to collect even more firewood, moments before they overheard the secretive conversation between their parents, that they could not afford their upkeep.

“Eaves-dropping on this conversation made me extremely emotional and terribly upset,” cried Hansel tearfully. Local village experts have confirmed that the children were neglected for some time and had tried to run as far away from their cottage as possible. Tired and exhausted, they eventually stumbled into the Secret Woods. Unable to recall when they last had a proper meal, they feasted their hungry eyes upon the most delightful treat…

A delicately decorated gingerbread house!... A warm and hospitable little, old, oversized lady waddled out of her house and invited them inside. Much to their disappointment, Hansel was crammed into a rusty cage,

Y3 Rocks and Soils

to be fattened before consumption, whilst Gretel was transformed into Cinderella, her personal slave. Unknown to the blind witch, instead of being fed with high calorie foods such as cake and crisps, Gretel said that she fed Hansel all her slim fast drinks!

Now raging with hunger pangs, the infuriated witch began to gorge on her own gingerbread house. “Within moments it started. First the lips swelled. Then it was only a matter of time until she started scratching all over like a flea infested rat!” exclaimed Hansel. Then came her inflation, up, up and away she went. Eventually the balloon like creature detonated over the junior school playground of Bedford Modern School. A specimen of a wart on the end of the remains of her nose was sent for pathological investigation, results of which have confirmed that this peculiar species was in fact a witch. Medical scientists have proven that this witch was also suffering from an allergy to cystine-proteinase GP-1, an ingredient found naturally in ginger.

Fortunately for Hansel and Gretel, their mother now spends all day, every day practicing her TT rockstars with Mr Bucktin. As for Hansel and Gretel, they now run an international bakery, www.everythingingerbread.com . BMS junior correspondent.

Describing a Beast

The beast stood as tall as a tower and was the colour of ice with sharp, pointy scales. When its beady eyes looked at you, your heart would shatter into a thousand pieces. The beast’s teeth were as sharp as diamonds and the colour of copper. Its roar was a thunderous growl that could shake the land and make you scream in fear. If you touched a spike on the beast’s tail, your heart would turn to stone for all eternity.

Amrita S 3ACS

The beast stood as strong as a mountain and as tall as a giant. With one touch of its venom tipped wings, you would perish in the blink of an eye. The beast’s powerful ears on its dragon-like head could hear for miles around.

Violet M 3ACS

The highly poisonous beast lay slumped on its latest victim’s floor. It was a murderous sight as, when the bloody beast’s belly bulged, I saw a skull pressed against its swollen stomach. It could sense my presence and its five protruding yellow eyes with the power to petrify fixed on my hiding spot. The monster slid towards me oozing with poisonous slime and its one snail-like foot smacked the floor. It shrieked an awful high-pitched noise like a hundred pterodactyls all cawing at once. It gave me a great view of its two tusk-like canines and a hundred rows of teeth whirling like drills.

Queen Victoria Biography

Queen Alexadrina Victoria was born on the 24th May 1819 at Kensington Palace. Her parents were Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld and Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Stathearn. In her life, she got married, had children, and she is currently the second-longest reigning monarch.

Childhood

When Queen Victoria was born, she was fifth in the line of succession and George III was king. On the 23rd January 1820, her father died and then a week later, her grandfather died, the King, King George III so George IV became King. Queen Victoria had two siblings, Princess Reodora and Carl, Prince of Leiningen.

Becoming Queen

On the 20th June 1837, Queen Victoria woke up as a queen as she found out that her uncle and the king, William IV, died of heart failure in Windsor Castle. Over a year later, Queen Victoria had her coronation when she was just 18 years old. She was the first monarch to live in Buckingham Palace. The coronation was rather chaotic and ‘botched’. Before her coronation in fact, she had episcophobia, the fear of bishops but she gladly got it over it before the coronation.

Married Life

On the 15th October 1839, Queen Victoria got engaged to her German second cousin, Albert Emmanuel and then got married on him on the 10th February 1840 in St. James’ Palace Chapel. She wore a dress that was white and had roses on it. Together, they had nine children. Five girls: Victoria (1840), Alice (1843), Helena (1846), Louise (1848) and Beatrice (1857). Four boys: Albert Edward (1841), Alfred (1844), Arthur (1850) and Leopold (1853). Queen Victoria opened the Great Exhibition on the 1st May 1851, a massive exhibition to educate the public and show off to the world British inventions and discoveries. Prince Albert also co-organized it with Henry Cole. Prince Albert had a huge passion for making the Exhibition a reality.

After Albert

On the 14th December 1861, Albert died from Typhoid fever, a fever caused from sewage water, aged 42 in Windsor Castle. Queen Victoria went into mourning, by wearing black, for the rest of her life. On the 29th March 1871, Queen Victoria opened the Royal Albert Hall in Albert’s memory. This event affected the rest of her reign.

Celebrations and Declarations

On the 1st May 1876, Queen Victoria was declared Empress of India even though India has been under British rule since 1858. This declaration was under direction of the Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli. On the 3rd May 1887, Queen Victoria celebrated her 50th year on the throne in her Golden Jubilee. They had a banquet and 50 kings and princes were invited. Golden Jubilee medals were given to those who participated in the celebrations. Ten years later, on the 20th June, Queen Victoria celebrated 60 years in her Diamond Jubilee. There was a garden party and a banquet again.

Death

On the 22nd January 1901, Queen Victoria died of a stroke in Osborne House, East-Cowies. She was 81 when she died and she ruled the United Kingdom for almost 64 years. Victoria and Albert were both buried in Frogmore Mausoleum.

Conclusion

Was Queen Victoria a good Queen?

At the time, Queen Victoria was known as a good queen. She was protective of her people, the British Empire and expanded the Empire’s land – this showed she cared about her people. She brought the Industrial Revolution, bringing inventions, factories and more. She slowly gave more rights to women and the poor, and improved schools. She started the Royal Police Force to protect the people and more. Now, we can see that her actions have affected how we live today. We know now that she isn’t as a good a queen we once thought she was.

What were the legacies of Queen Victoria’s reign?

Queen Victoria left behind great things and also bad things. She changed the school system and left Britain in power and respected by the World. The inventions from her time now are being used a lot today a lot. Queen Victoria expanded the monarchy and left behind a Britain which was completely different from when she first came to the throne. She left women, children and the poor more equal, but she started the events to cause Climate Change. We are now having to pay for her actions. The further we go, more problems arise about her reign and era.

Treemendous tree report!

On Monday 16th May 2022, a multi stem silver birch tree was planted by the children of year 4 on the BMS site to commemorate the queen’s platinum jubilee.

Mrs. Hale (the form tutor of one of the year 4 classes, 4KMH) said, “We chose a multi-stem silver birch tree because the white colour of the bark represented platinum.” All the children of year 4 agreed that taking part in the occasion was very exciting indeed. To commemorate the outstanding event, a plaque was made using wood and acrylic which said, Planted by the Junior School, commemorating Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee 2022. Some children were given flags to wave around the tree and everyone sang the National Anthem.

The Junior School children will be celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with a sensational garden party on Thursday 26th May 2022. It will take place on the grass near the newly planted tree. The children are looking forward to wearing their party clothes and having an afternoon off school.

So, what do the children in Year 4 think their tree will look like in the future? Oliver Cassenti (4KMH) said, “When I am in Year 12 I think the tree will be huge and healthy.” Let’s hope so Oliver, let’s hope it’s as huge and healthy as the oak tree planted by her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1976 to celebrate the opening of the new BMS site on Manton Lane.

Legends

Many moons ago, in a forest that reached out far and wide, there was a beautiful kingdom. There were crystal clear streams, splendid blossom trees and delightful hedgehogs. However, a great sadness lay over them like a thick back cloud for they held a blood-curdling secret. In the forest, in a cave, lived a terrifying, maneating beast.

The beast stood as strong as a mighty oak and was covered in spots like bloodthirsty eyes that could turn your heart to stone. The beast’s eyes were like raging infernos and its wings were as large as a boulder and as strong as a tornado.

Ever since its arrival, the beast had been threatening to destroy the kingdom unless the people gave it a weekly sacrifice of an animal. Eventually, the people ran out of animals so they met with the king to decide what to do to keep the beast away.

“We have no animals left!” shouted the villagers desperately. “Help! Help! What should we do? The beast will destroy the kingdom and us too!”

The ruler declared, “Every child shall have their name put into a casket and each week, a name shall be drawn. That child will be sacrificed to the beast!”

Over the lands and over the seas, there was a town not so different from ours. These enchanting people had huge smiles on their faces and there were avenues of green trees and fragrant blossoms. It should have been a cheerful place, but a sadness lay over the people like a big grey cloud. For in a dim cave in the icy mountains lived a blood-curdling animal: a colossal ruby-eyed peacock.

The beast was as tall as a door and was covered in fiery feathers with wings as big as a wall. Its bird-like head was as majestic and delicate as a swan. Its eyes were as red as rubies and if you looked into them, you’d disappear. It had one deadly tail that shot boomerangs which were tipped with electric and poison.

Ever since her arrival, the peacock had been threatening to wreck the village so, every week, the people of the town would send the cutest puppy or kitten they had. In return, she would leave the town alone. This had worked for a long time but eventually the town’s people ran out of animals, so they met with the Queen to decide what to do to keep the peacock away. Finally, she declared, “It is well known that peacocks think boys taste like puppy dog’s tails. Every little boy in the town will have their name written on a small cut of paper. Once a week a name shall be chosen and that boy will be sacrificed to the peacock.”

On the same day when the first name was pulled out a young girl called Charlie trotted into town. She was fearless and stunning, with her golden locks tied back with dark blue ribbons. The girl wore armour that was burnt and battered. She carried with her a sword stained with the blood of her enemies. When she rode down the

On the morning of the first lottery, a fearless warrior rode into town- her name was Raven. She was carrying a blood dripping sword and sold gold shield. Her hair was as black as a winter night and her steed was as white as snow.

Eventually, she met an old man who told her the kingdom’s sorrowful tale.

“The first name drawn was Same, the prince.”

When the old man had finished, Raven decided to save the prince. Worried, she took a deep breath to focus her mind on the deadly battle ahead. At full speed, Raven galloped on her steed towards the beast’s lair, silver sword at the ready.

At the dead of night, Raven approached the beast’s lair, ready to strike. In the blink of an eye, the monster came out roaring fiercely. Ferociously, she charged at the beast at galloping speed. Without warning, the deadly beast attacked back with snapping teeth. Suddenly, Raven was knocked down, barely alive. Unknown to her, the beast was about to strike when she took an almighty swing of her sword and to her relief, there was the beast, knocked down, life ebbing away.

path, she recognised that there was no one there and then an old man told her all about the lottery.

“But, “ he went on, “the first name drawn was the Queen’s son, Prince Arthur. He is on his way to the peacock right now!”

Charlie decided that the peacock needed to be dealt with! As the hero galloped towards the beast’s lair, she saw the young prince. She called out to him and told him to wait by a nearby hill. Charlie took out her bloodstained sword and surged on but the beast was ready! With her sword held high, she approached the beast’s lair, ready to fight. The beast came out with a mighty screech. Charlie attacked and hurled her glittery sword at the peacock. Suddenly, the beast used its tail as a shield, deflecting our hero’s sword. Unfortunately, one of the peacock’s feathers scratched Charlie’s arm, poisoning her. She stumbled backwards into a waterfall. Unknown to her, this was an enchanted waterfall and cured her of the poison. Charlie saw a sparkling sword on the floor from a previous victim and grabbed it and plunged it into the back of the beast’s head. The creature writhed in pain, staggered a few steps forward before crashing to the floor DEAD!

Triumphantly, Charlie cleaned her new sword on the grass and set off down the fields towards the hill where Prince Arthur stood waiting.

Drums rat-a-tat tatted and people jumped for joy. The queen was so happy she whooped, “Thank you for saving my son. If you love each other then make it so!”

And they lived happily ever after.

A Greek Myth

In Ancient Greece long ago there was a boy called Chiron. He was son of the mighty Zeus, the God of all Gods, but his son sadly had no powers. Zeus promised his son that if he could stop the evil Neigus from killing people and causing avalanches then he could become the God of Snow and Ice. Chiron agreed easily and went on his journey to Mount Skala. That’s where the evil Neigus lived.

Chiron got there and met Hades who gave him the Cloak of Camouflage and a sword to help him destroy the strong beast.

As Chiron came face to face with the enormous thing, he could smell a vile smell and the beast’s fur was as white as the snow beneath him and his feet were massive. Chiron was terrified but bravely swung his sword at Neigus but Neigus dodged and then threw a punch at Chiron, who fell on the ground and quickly threw The Cape of Camouflage on himself to sneak behind Neigus. He stabbed Neigus in the back, unsure if Neigus was dead or alive. Chiron stabbed him again, now being sure Neigus was dead. He returned to Mount Olympus. Chiron told Zeus and Zeus granted Chiron the power of Snow and Ice.

Condover Hall is located in Condover which is two and a half hours away from Bedford (198.6km). Condover Hall is where some schools go for their residential trip. What things can be done at Condover hall?

At Condover Hall a range of activities were arranged for us to do, there are different types of fun activities. Some take place on water (e.g., kayaking), some take place high above the ground (e.g., ariel trek) and some take place on the ground (e.g., archery). There are indoor and outdoor activities but most of them are outdoors. There are many opinions on activities, some opinions on activities differ depending on when each group completed the activity meaning some did kayaking in the rainy, cold weather and hated it while others did kayaking in the warm, sunny weather and loved it. There are 5 activities every day.

What is the food like at Condover Hall?

Food at Condover Hall is served after 4-6 hours; at three different times : breakfast is served at 8:00, lunch is at 12:50 and dinner is at 5:50. There are many options when choosing what to eat. At breakfast there is a choice of toast with an optional spread or cereal with milk, at lunch there is a choice of non-vegetarian food and vegetarian food – this is also the same with dinner, for dessert there is a choice to either have healthy fruit or the other option that is being served (this dish changes every day) and is mostly something sweet like cake or doughnuts.

Is there spare time?

Spare time is given after activities and after lunch and dinner. After activities spare time is given for around 15 minutes this time is either to change depending on the next activity or go to the toilet, however after dinner or lunch you get about 30 – 40 minutes this time is used for taking a shower or eating snacks and resting.

What are dorms like at Condover Hall?

Dorms at Condover Hall are split into girls’ and boys’ rooms, the dorms include five sets of bunkbeds and a bathroom also a shower room. All the dorms are different some have more space, and some had less. The maximum number of people in a dorm is ten and minimum in a dorm is six.

Are there ghosts and Condover Hall?

JCA (the staff at Condover) say there have been sightings of ghosts by visitors and by themselves! There are stories JCA told us about; one of them was about a young girl who roamed around Condover Hall in a bright, red Victorian coat. Sometimes she acts like one of the students, so when schools come the teachers do a count up of students and they always have one extra person, when they turn away and look back, she would be gone…

Summary

Overall Condover Hall is a great experience. This is definitely a place recommended as there are so many exciting activities to conquer and enjoy.

Y5 Holdenby House

On the 22 June 2022 Year 5 went to Holdenby House in Northamptonshire. This was for an authentic Tudor experience where we would take part in various activities and workshops.

5KRH started with ‘Pike Drill’ where we learnt the formations of how to attack in battle. This included knowing how to fight people that would have been on foot and on horseback. We learnt the battle cry which was shouting ‘DEATH!’ at the top of our lungs. It one on the best parts of the day.

Next, we looked at traditional Tudor medicines. This included: lavender and dried flower petals to help with sleep; mouse bones which was for rich people to stop headaches and leeches for bloodletting. This was a bit gross and made some people feel a bit funny!

Calligraphy was the next session, where we had to write with a quill and ink. We learnt what was used to make ink and had a go at writing our names using complex letters. These letters were more suited for quill writing because

you can only move the quill down, not up. Luckily, we had blotting paper to absorb excess ink, and no one was sprayed.

The last indoor session was ‘Heraldry’ where we created our own shields with images and designs that reflected our personality traits. For example, a serpent was for intelligence, a fist was for a hard-working man and a bee was for a hard-working woman.

Finally, we had a tour of the gardens, which were beautiful. We also had a question-and-answer session about anything related to the house or the Tudors. We discovered that the house was built by Sir Christopher Hatton to encourage Queen Elizabeth to come and visit, but she never did. A fun fact we found out was that he rebuilt the local village, as it disturbed the view from his window.

We had an extraordinary time at Holdenby House, but make sure you don’t look at the leaches for too long!

Charities Afternoon

The Junior School held their charities morning. Groups of students in Years 3-6 set up and decorated their own stalls, offering a wide range of activities such as homemade cake sales, a ring toss, raffles and lucky dips, sponge throwing and photobooths. There were even some games that they had made up themselves – including ‘Are You a Ninja?’ where students tried to knock over bottles by throwing paper shuriken! Overall, they raised an astounding £1253 for Great Ormond Street Hospital and Children’s Charity and had great fun in the process.

The Awakening

As I awoke, I could feel the chilly air breeze against my face. I wondered where I had woken up, I had slept in my room last night, not wherever I am now.

There were corridors and rooms around the building, it looked like an abandoned hospital from a movie, but it was not a movie. I strolled down one of the corridors that said “Exit,” but the doors were boarded up, there was no way I could get out without tools.

Suddenly I felt like I was being watched, I turned around to see a black figure dashing to the other side of the corridor. My heart boomed in my chest I wondered what that figure was, it had no face, just a figure. I walked to where I saw the figure run but there was nothing there.

I turned to walk through the next corridor, the lights were flickering like the rest of this building, apart from one part, the west wing. Most lights on this wing were out but some barely worked. I cautiously walked to the area of the west wing; this part of the building was much colder than other parts of the hospital.

I blinked and just barely saw the shadowy figure again, this time he was in the reception area. Suddenly, I heard the crackle of flames, the smokey smell of smoke, there was a fire in the reception! I tip toed slowly to investigate it and it had spread from the cafeteria. I slowly walked down the next corridor; I had just blinked to see in my horror the figure standing right in front of me...

Mr Barrow

I interviewed Mr Barrow as he is leaving the Junior School next year. I asked him some questions about his time at BMJS.

First of all, Mr Barrow has been at Bedford Modern Junior School for 18 amazing years!! He teaches his Form class, 6CB, Sports and lots of other classes.

The thing he will miss most about the Junior School is the staff room because of all of the laughs with other staff, he has great memories with lots of the staff here although he will certainly meet new teachers when he moves. Another thing that Mr Barrow will miss is the enthusiasm of his students in all subjects.

A great example of what we do at the Junior School is all the opportunities! Of course, Mr Barrow enjoys being a teacher, and one of his favourite things about it is the variety of activities that the curriculum has to offer.

Staff and students know how busy school life is, but nobody better than Mr Barrow after how long he’s been here for! There is never a moment to spare in this teacher’s life, from organising lessons to fixtures and coaching. I think that most people would agree that he does an excellent job, especially under all the pressure and deadlines.

Some of the fondest memories for Mr Barrow have to be the Rugby Tour to South Africa, running the Kingswood trips for as long as anybody can remember, the joy of coaching students in sports and, best of all, winning the County Cup with the Under 11 boys in Hockey, a brilliant achievement!

One of the most special parts of being a teacher to Mr Barrow is seeing how the children change from 11 to 18 and observing what kind of person they want to be.

Finally, the question about Mr Barrow’s future plans! Well, he is moving into Bedford Modern Senior School to continue teaching and I’m lucky enough to have him as my English teacher next year. Everyone will miss Mr Barrow loads but he’s not that far away!

Miss Hayman

Miss Hayman has been a member of the BMJS sports staff for five and a half years. She is the head of Junior girl’s sport, and has taught hockey, netball and cricket.

Miss Hayman likes being a teacher because she enjoys being able to see the children smile and achieve in sports and other subjects, and their skills increase over time, even if it is not their favourite. She has found her time here enjoyable, fun, exciting and, also, quite busy. Her favourite things about BMJS have been the family-like community, the Year 6 residentials, the sports tours and, best of all, the fixtures, home and away, against different schools. Her best memories here are her first ever Women in Sport week, teaching with cricketer Lydia Greenwood, all the sports days, and the trips to Condover Hall.

Miss Hayman’s next step of her amazing journey is to be the Head of Girls’ Sports at Bedford Greenacre Independent School – but she will miss being able to say hello to all of the children in the corridors and knowing their names.

Mrs Gale

Mrs Gale has been working In BMS for 10 years. She mainly teaches her year 4 class but also teaches Science and Art.

She has had so many memories of BMS she said it is hard to count, but some of her favourites are Burwell House residential, all the productions and House music. Mrs Gale is also very interested in costumes as she helps put together all the costumes for the Christmas production and the summer one, too.

Mrs Gale loves teaching because every day is different, she said you learn new things every day. Sometimes from an adult or sometimes a student. She also enjoys coming into school in the morning and seeing all her smiling students ready to learn.

Mrs Gale told me that what she will miss are the smiles, the laughter, the children, and her team of staff. She has loved working in a team and that has what has made it so special. She is really going to miss the staff and all her students.

Mrs Gale will be leaving to spend more time with her family and look after her husband. She has thoroughly enjoyed her time a BMS and is really going to miss it.

The Robin and the Crow – A Fable

Once there was a robin who was very lazy and greedy who stole everything he had. He didn’t even want to find his own food.

The robin was starving. “I’m so hungry!” moaned the robin. “I’m soon going to starve!” But he was too idle to find anything to eat, just then something caught his eye. “Is that a worm?” he questioned rubbing his eyes, “I cannot believe this!” But, at that very moment a crow appeared and grabbed up the worm. While the crow was munching the worm, the robin was just staring at them, he wanted them so badly he started to cry. Suddenly an idea popped into his mind “This is a great idea!” he laughed menacingly.

The robin’s plan was that the crow always leaves the worms in his nest while he goes for more, so the robin eats them when they’re alone.” Nobody will be there when I eat one or two maybe”. The next day the robin tried that, it worked! “Yum, delicious! This is SO GOOD!”

Dessin Arcimboldo

declared the robin. When the crow came back, he yelled, “Where are my worms, hmm, ho, never mind,” he calmed down. From then on, the robin did this until one day when the crow had made a plan of his own, he would put a hook in a worm then the bird who wants to eat the worm gets hooked.

The robin was that bird. Today was another special day, “Yum,” he thought. “Om, OUCH! Ou, Ou!” he screamed at that very moment the crow appeared “I knew it would work,” he muttered to himself. “Well, hello! Fellow robin been stealing I see?” said the crow slowly. The robin of course couldn’t answer he was trapped. When the crow unhooked him, the robin actually asked for worms, but the crow immediately said, “No, you don’t deserve it!.” So, the robin starved.

And the moral of the story is … Don’t take what is not yours!
