The Sinking of The Empire by Joan

“We ran out of battery! Can someone go and turn on the generator?” the intercom blasted out at full volume before going back to its normal buzzing noise. “I told you to fix that!” I growled to my friend, Tom. He was the onboard engineer. “I’m worried about how to get to the generator” he replied. “WHY” I shouted. “Because we need a lift to get to the generator, and there is no battery. So...” “We can’t turn it on” I said wearily. In the bridge, chaos was the perfect word to describe the noise. The Empire had been sinking for the past 20 minutes, and no-one was bothered about it. They were panicking because the crew couldn’t get to the generator. And that was why there was an Apache helicopter above them. “EMPTY THE BALLASTS,” the captain shouted.

A Visitor’s Guide to Berk

For generations this stunning island been inhabited by Vikings. For years people have searched for this place. Berk is an island buried in mystery, exploration and quests. Welcome to the Isle of Berk, your Viking journey awaits.

Caliban Caves

Start your quest at these amazing caverns. With everything from stalactites to rare bats, you won’t get bored exploring these natural wonders. If you want the most out of the best, these are the caves for you.

Hooligan Village

Next up, the village has more to offer than ever! Take a peek at the (slightly terrifying) Chief of the Hairy Hooligan tribe, Stoick the Vast, or if you like something slightly gentler, then take a stroll around the historic portrait hall. When you’re feeling peckish, visit the seafood stalls, or go to the Big Axe Tavern for some more options or a taste of authentic Viking cuisine.

Wild Dragon Cliff

A trip to Berk isn’t complete without visiting this cliff. The root of dragon culture, Wild Dragon Cliff is a treasure trove waiting to be unlocked. If three thousand dragons isn’t the best way to experience life on the edge, what is? You can’t miss this opportunity to see actual dragons was they play, sleep, work and explore. This tripe is not recommended for people with Lizard allergies.

Highest Point

With it being the tallest peak in all of Berk, this mountain is a challenge to climb, but when you make it, believe me it will have been worth it. When you are the top, you’ll be rewarded with incredible views and maybe even the sight of hundreds of dragons flying over you! Now that’s what I call magical.

“Done cap’n!” A crew member said.

As Tom lowered me down the shaft, I kept on reminding myself that all I was doing was going under a 2-tone mini submarine to turn on the generator. We had to get under the pool mechanism, and then find the generator switch. Once I turned my torch on, I saw a wave roaring towards me. I tried to scream, but I fainted in time to not see what the ‘wave’ was.

When I woke up, I realized I was in the Med Bay. There was a hum, which I recognized as the engines. The intercom suddenly crackled on. “We have a code 2 in airlock 3. Oh, and thank you to Tom Crindel for restarting the engine.” Suddenly there was a bang, a sinking feeling, and I blacked out again.

Puffin Point

Last but definitely not least, its… Puffin Point! If you are a keen birdwatcher, or just like all things cute, this is your will see, must see spot. The most puffins all or Berk, you can’t miss it. A birdwatching cabin allows you to see them without getting too close to those beaks… anyway, this is the perfect way to end the day.

Meet the locals

Fishlegs

Often found walking around the village, or training his dragon Horrorcow, in his tiny back garden, Fishlegs is Hiccup’s best friend and can’t really be relied own to get you out of somewhere if it involves dragons. If it doesn’t, then he might help you. Fishlegs hates being a Viking because everything is so rough. His fear is exile. It doesn’t look promising out there.

Stoick the Vast

You’ll definitely want to look out for the big chief (and Hiccup’s dad) on your travels around Berk. You can find him in the Big Axe tavern, or at home in his room, ruling the island from their house. Although he has to do Chief stuff he looks out for his sons as well.

Hiccup

Watch out for the adventurous young hero of Berk, Hiccup. Mostly found in his garden trying to train his dragon Toothless, or with Fishlegs. He likes to go to the green woods to dragonwatch in peace, he isn’t really the “I’ll-swing-my-axe-at-you-for-no-reason,” type you can go talk to him about Dragonese. He might even give you a lesson in it.

The Mystery

I strode confidentially through the ballroom, passing by all the extravagantly dressed men and women. I looked down to my wrist to check the time on my watch. 11:57 it read.

I sighed and turned back to the dance floor and watched for a few minutes. I glanced behind me, everyone was emptying the ballroom door, only a few guests stayed with the same look of confusion on their face to see the sudden emptiness of the hall.

I decided to go and look at what the people were causing a commotion about, as I anxiously shuffled out of the open door the loud voices really intensified. I slithered through the crowd to get to the front. I admired the gorgeous woman everyone was gaping at; her dress was made of satin and the sash that she had wrapped around her waist has made of luxurious Egyptian cotton. The hem was covered in layers of elegant, floral lace and the halter neck was embroidered on the edges. Her hair was pushed back into a bun and a jewel incrusted hair slide sat on the side of her bun. I was then shoved out of the way by a man holding a camera. Before I could catch another glimpse of the woman, the police covered her dead body with a sheet.

An Unpleasant Night

A fox ran away as Fletcher Renn appeared out of nowhere. He knew there was no time to waste, so he took in his surroundings hurriedly. He was in the garden of an old Victorian house on the edge of a forest. He heard a wail coming from inside. It was cut short. He knew she was here. Instead of doing what the right side of his brain was saying, he went inside. He called her name, knowing she wouldn’t answer. He decided to head for the place the scream came from. He quickly found it and stayed calm as he saw the corpse. He knew a being of her power had done this with her hands. He felt the air shift. She was here.

The cold air had been biting at his fingers for hours, but only now did he realise. He could taste the crisp air in his lungs as a crack of moonlight broke the darkness. He saw her, her clothes torn and bloodstained. She grinned and he knew he should run.

She slowly came closer, but it was like he was glued to the floor, he couldn’t run. She was right in front of him now. She laughed as she kicked him, and he howled in pain and crumpled to the ground. Taking hostages showed weakness, yet nothing about her was weak.

The Graveyard

I stood there. The bitter cold biting at my skin. My red cloak billowed behind me as I breathed in and out. The floor beneath my feet wascobbled and had moonlit puddles on the edge of the road. On my right was a dilapidated Victorian church, the windows reflecting the moon above me. The wall and rails were biting cold as I ran my hands over the surfaces. I could just see the gravestones inside the grounds, like the clouds they too cast shadows.

My urge to run was more noticeable than ever but I was slowly moving forward. The damp air was biting my cheeks and I nervously pulled my scarf over my face. The cold air was in my mouth along with a taste of blood it sent a chill down my spine. I really hoped my friends would find me.

Looking across the street I saw a tall, black shadow. As I walked forward in my clumpy boots, the shadow moved towards me. Suddenly I was being dragged by my feet as my eyes started to shut. Was this the end of me?

Later I nervously sat up a saw the same shadow above me, so feeling the crunch of grass beneath my feet I quickly got up. I wanted to run but the shadow was moving faster. It moved closer and closer. From the depths of his black billowing cloak, he drew a knife, that was long, sharp, and terrifying.

Scene setting

I saw an old, abandoned church. I could feel cold, hard stone on my back and as I heard the crows squawking, it sent a shiver down my spine. It didn’t feel right to be here. I began to panic. I could pretty much taste the fear – I could smell the sadness of the building and I was certain that someone was watching me.
