We have certainly been reminded that despite living in sunny Scottsdale, we still have winter here in Arizona. Remarkably, December and January were two of the coldest months on record, leading to 15 total frost delays! We hope we are through it now and on to a beautiful February, March, and April, as we enter the heart of our tournament season at the Club.
January played host to our Men’s Senior Club Championships, which produced well-deserving Champions. Congratulations to our 2023 Overall Gross Senior Club Champion Jim Gallup, our Overall Super Senior Gross Club Champion John Jacquay, and First Flight Gross Champion Bruce Hosler on their exceptional play and subsequent victories.
Congratulations are also due to all our Senior Club Championship net flight winners on their fine play. They are Craig Weaver, Rob Stewart and Jim Kroll. Complete result summaries are available in the Golf Shop. A big thank you to all who participated in this year’s competition!
Our Club match play championships are also in full swing, with round-one play through February 12th. We congratulate those of you who have been victorious in your first match and look forward to crowning our 2023 Champions.
February and March also include all of our Ladies’ and Men’s Member-Guest tournaments the Sunrise Classic, Salida del Sol, and Sunset Classic. These events never disappoint and are once again fully subscribed, as we look forward to showing off your Club to your special guests.
While the golf course and Club are enjoying exceptional activity levels, we would like to remind you of the importance of your pace of play and completing your round in less than 4 hours, regardless of the size of your group. I’m happy to report that for all three months we have been open since overseed, the average pace of play at the Club has held strong at 3 hours and 50 minutes. The old adage still holds true, it’s “keep up with the group in front of you,” not “stay in front of the group behind you.” As I like to say, golf is a game for a lifetime, but it shouldn’t take a lifetime to play!
We also appreciate your diligence in fixing all ball marks and filling all divots in overseeded areas in support of our Pride of Ownership initiatives at the Club. It takes effort from all Members and their guests to maintain the excellent playing conditions we have come to expect at PPCC.
We look forward to our next few months of golf and seeing you all at the Club soon!

With nearly all new faces on our professional staff, we wanted to give you some insight into their backgrounds and how they arrived at Pinnacle Peak. I personally am thrilled to have all of them and feel this is the strongest team of professionals we have assembled in years. Please read about each of our team members and don’t hesitate to reach out to any of them should you need assistance.

I call Gardnerville in Northern Nevada home but have lived all over the state with my parents working in the casino industry. Married to my wife, Jamie, for seven years and have an 8-month-old daughter named Eleanor Joyce. I can’t call golf a hobby anymore, as it is my profession, but I do also enjoy cooking/baking and hosting people. I am a Class A PGA professional since February of 2021. Most recently I was the Head Professional at Tatum Ranch but have also worked at Capital Canyon Club in Prescott, Pinewood CC in Munds Park, and Rio Verde CC in Rio Verde.
JAMES BICKLEjbickle@pp-cc.org
Twenty-five years old, born and raised in Cave Creek, Arizona, I am blessed with loving parents and siblings. My older brother Danny serves as a Marine and just graduated from GW Law, and my younger sister is working to get her Master’s at Baylor University while also playing on the basketball team. Basketball was my first love before getting the golf bug in college. I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in marketing from Grand Canyon University and am just starting my journey into the PGA program. Working as an assistant professional for the last five years has given me amazing opportunities to travel each season, from Pine Canyon and Forest Highlands in Flagstaff to Diamante in Cabo, and now back home in the Valley.

Born and raised in rural north California, I was looking for a new adventure when I joined the US Navy as a Hull Maintenance Technician. During eight years of service, I was stationed in Guam, as well as the Camp Pendleton Marine Base in California and have been deployed to several countries including Bahrain and Japan. After honorable discharge, I enrolled in the Professional Golf Management Program at Florida Gulf Coast University, where in December 2020, I earned my B.S. in Golf Management as well as my Class A PGA status. Fresh from North Fork Country Club in east Long Island, my current hobbies include hiking, the gym, and exploring new bars.

An Arizona native who previously worked at Golf Club of Estrella, I recently married my lovely wife, Aleah, and together we care for our dog, Jack. I studied finance at Arizona State University and later went on to get a Master's Degree in Business Administration. When I’m not at the golf course, I enjoy camping, playing pickleball, and doing regular maintenance on my truck.
twright@pp-cc.org
Born and raised in Phoenix, AZ, I spent five years in Chicago selling custom suits before my wife and I decided to come home in late 2019 to be close to family. I have been happily married to my wife, Carina, since 2018 and we have a wonderful 15-month-old daughter named Kaja. I used to have hobbies outside of golf, but now most of my time is spent watching Kaja grow and learn. I wouldn’t have it any other way. I have been in the golf industry since returning in 2019, and I have worked at Estancia for two years as well as a summer at Quintero. Currently working my way through the PGA program, I’m nearly finished with level one.
Your Professional Staff is here to help and look forward to seeing you at the Club soon!

The Board wishes to clarify the Club’s policy on PPCC’s contracted instructors and trainers. The Club has contracted with several individuals to provide services to the PPCC Membership. We have recently put a written policy into place which will need to be followed going forward. See policy below;
It is the policy of Pinnacle Peak Country Club that members will not bring in outside trainers for any activities where PPCC has an employee or contracted individual(s) available. This includes, but is not limited to;
Fitness/Aquatic Fitness
Tennis/Pickleball

Thank you Doc! Doc has served us as our General Manager since January 2015. Through Doc’s vision, leadership, and tremendous dedication, he has been integral in the transformation of PPCC. Doc’s time at PPCC was filled with many positive changes and growth. Doc headed to Arizona Country Club on October 1st. We wish him great success in his new position!
Vietnam Veteran Frank Lambert shares his stories of service, life experiences, and the resulting lessons he wishes to impart to the next generation via the Veterans Heritage Project. Appreciation from students can be significantly healing, the recognition is rewarding, and the preservation of history is important. Frank shares what makes the most impact for him - the interaction with students. When Frank returned from Vietnam, strangers threw rocks at his medical transport. In his civilian life, work colleagues ridiculed his service. Due to this treatment, Frank never shared his stories of leadership, bravery and duty until he was interviewed for the Purple Heart edition of Since you Asked. Frank was so impressed with his student interviewer who displayed gratitude toward veterans and aspirations to serve her community. A connection was formed and the ongoing experience with his student interviewer rekindled Frank’s sense of duty and patriotism. For that, he is mindful of his personal responsibility to pay back to those who a part of Veterans Heritage Project. To help more Veterans Heritage Project students who have demonstrated a passion for learning, hard work, and giving back to the community, Frank and his wife Judy established the Lambert Family Scholarship Fund. This Lambert Scholar Fund, open to high school seniors and college freshman, awards up to $17,500 to support trade school, community college, or a university education, and is renewable for up to four years.
Congratulations Zachary Henderson. He brings a positive attitude to work, never hesitating to go above and beyond. A Maine native who relocated, Zach is a passionate sports fan with his favorites that include the New England Patriots, Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics and the Boston Bruins. He is joined at home by his fiance, Kailee, and Gracie, his cattle dog. Zach enjoys hiking, cooking and serving our membership!
Congratulations Fernando Cadenas Jr. Fernando is a vital member of our F&B Team. Serving as kitchen supervisor, he continues to perform at a high level and has exceeded our expectations with his effort and professionalism during his four years at PPCC. When not working, Fernando enjoys spending time with his wife and three children and visiting their favorite family travel destination: a beach anywhere in California.
We are thrilled to award Kim Cermak, our very capable Director of Retail, with the Employee of the Month award for December. Kim has been with PPCC for two years now and has done a wonderful job with the buying in the Golf Shop and assisting Members with special orders. We all look a bit sharper, thanks to her! Well done, Kim!
Congratulations Marlon Corona! Born in Mexico, raised in the Valley, Marlon joined our team in 2002, serving various F&B roles for more than 20 years. He’s currently dining room assistant manager where his exceptional attitude shines through along with a smile. Marlon never hesitates to go above and beyond to provide exceptional service. When he’s not working, Marlon enjoys time spent with his wife and four children.

It’s been an absolute pleasure to be a part of the special happenings during my first three weeks at the club. I tipped my hat to Golf Course Maintenance employee Juan Tamayo’s incredible 39 years of service at his retirement celebration. I learned a lot during the changing of the guard at the annual meeting and shared the thrill of victory at the ladies’ team play against Ancala.
Judging from the spectacular wine dinner presented by Mike Lyon and Chef Brandon, I’m going to need to loosen up my belt. Perhaps Kim Cermak can order a new one! Speaking of whom, congratulation to her, Zachary Henderson, Fernando Cadenas and Marlon Corona for earning employee of the month honors.
As we look forward to the spring event calendar, I’d like to recognize Mr. Gallup’s hard-fought victory in the recent Senior Club Championship. Likewise, congratulation to Net Senior Club Champion, Craig Weaver; First Flight Gross Champion, Bruce Hosler; First Flight Net Champion, Rob Stewart; Super Senior Gross Club Champion, John Jacquay; and Super Senior Net Champion, Jim Kroll.
Three PPCC sharpshooters notched holes-in-one since Bill Reitz’s ace in November on No. 11. Kyle Haynie (No. 9) and Karlene Kieffer (No. 3) followed in January. Well done!
Finally, I’d like to give a special shoutout to Mr. Kuntz, the executive committee, board members, committee members and the staff for a warm welcome over the last three weeks!
Cheers!
Jim Murphy General Manager, COO JUSTIN GILLHAM PRESIDENTWe are well into the new year and seeing activity and traffic increase at PPCC. It is great to see all the familiar faces returning to the Club after the busy holiday season, in addition to some new faces. I would like to welcome our newest members to the Club, and I’m hopeful they are enjoying it as much as the rest of us are. It makes me proud to see how welcoming and comforting PPCC is, along with our humble values that stay intact consistently. It is my pleasure to welcome our new General Manager, Jim Murphy. Jim is the leader PPCC needs to continue the successes we have experienced. I am excited to have him as an addition to our fabulous staff
We have seen some swings in weather since reopening in late October, although most of it for the betterment of the course conditions. Cody and his team have been able to keep the course in the tremendous shape we love and appreciate. As members and stakeholders, we need to do our part in embracing our pride of ownership. Please make it a point to stay diligent in leaving the course in better shape than you found it when you play. A little effort from each of us ensures we protect our little “gem” in the desert.
Please join me in taking this opportunity to thank the outgoing Board Members, Dean Heskin, Mark Kuntz, and John Small for all their time and effort over the last three years. They endured a lot over this time, including Covid, a bunker renovation project, and a search for our new General Manager, all of which took additional time, energy, and resources. I would also like to welcome our newest Board Members: Rue Bax, Ruben Lujan Jr., and Larry Oliva. I look forward to the collaboration to ensure constant improvement of PPCC.
We look forward to the coming year and moving several capital projects forward. You will be seeing more communication and Club meetings around both the proposed maintenance building renovation, as well as the proposed kitchen renovation. The priority, as shared at the annual meeting, is the maintenance building renovation, although we will continue to push forward on the plans for the kitchen renovation in parallel.
Finally, thank you to all our member, families, and staff for making Pinnacle Peak Country Club the most enjoyable and special country club in the state!
Best Regards, Justin Gillham
