PINNACLE PEAK GOLFERS

If you’ve been in Scottsdale all summer, you’re as excited as I am to finally have the temperatures under control! It was a long, hot summer but not hot enough to keep our hearty PPCC members from playing regularly and working on their games. It’s great to see such an active summer membership, and we look forward to everyone’s return and another great season together.

We held our sixth-annual Gentlemen’s BROILER Summer Member-Guest, and what a success it was. We had a full field of 108 players competing in this two-day tournament with various 9-hole formats. Congratulations to our 2023 BROILER Overall Champions, Brett Angner and Sean Whalen, for their excellent play and victory in what has proven to be a favorite tournament for many and a great summer tradition. Thank you to all who played!

Congratulations are also due to Evan Powell, our 2023 Overall Men’s Summer Derby Champion. Winning just one of the weekly Derby’s is an accomplishment alone, but Evan’s exceptional play put him in the winner’s circle a number of times throughout the season! He had the trophy all but secured before our final Derby of the year with Eric Waszolek and Mike Dominick in a close tie for second-place honors. Thank you to everyone who supported this fun weekly event throughout the summer.

The golf course reopened on October 27 with regular tee times beginning at 7:30 AM. As has been the case in the past, tee time reservations can be made 7 days in advance beginning at 7:00 AM on ForeTees or by calling the Golf Shop.

Our ForeTees mobile App provides a fast and easy way to book tee times, register for events and schedule instruction.

Many of you may have heard by now that our Head Golf Professional Richard Abbott has taken on a new position as the Head Professional at Briarwood CC and will not be returning for the season. We wish him great success in his new endeavor. We are excited to begin the season with the familiar faces of Tony Wright, Boston Richardson and James Bickle who is returning year-round from Forest Highlands Golf Club this summer. New members of our professional staff include our new Head Golf Professional Abby Parsons and seasonal Assistant Professional Izzy Marchino. I am confident we have assembled the finest professional staff in years at PPCC, and that all of them will be very well received by the membership.

We are thrilled to get back to golf this season and look forward to seeing you at the club soon!

WGA welcomes ladies 18-hole golfers to the 2023-2024 season! Our season opener kick-off was on October 31st followed soon after with the Member-Member tournament on November 14-15. The purse for this tournament was greatly increased last year, which boosted turnout and the fun factor.

For weekly events, we will continue to rotate formats between ABCD and flighted pairings. We hope the mix of event formats will increase participation and be challenging and enjoyable for all golfers.

In June, the WGA Board asked Cheryl Levkoff to complete Liz Waynick's term for the next year, which she accepted.

This year's board members are Margaret Shreves (President), Diane Raleigh (VP), Joyce Knight (Treasurer), Connie McCune (Secretary) and Cindi Stewart (former President). Members are encouraged to bring suggestions and comments to any board member and let us know if you are interested in serving on the board in the future.

Whether you’re a new golfer or you just want to play 9 holes, we hope you'll join our PPCC Women's Nine Hole League.

We play most Monday mornings during the season, followed by a luncheon, and we have a great lineup of play dates and special events planned.

MARCI & BEV COMPETE AT HOME On August 25, we hosted the USGA Women’s Senior Amateur Qualifier. The “thank yous,” appreciation, and compliments on the golf course and hospitality were without exception from the competitors and USGA. We are even more proud of our two PPCC members who competed in the qualifier, Marci DuBois and Bev Frain. Marci had her “A” game (don’t ask her about hole No. 9), and she was one of the few competitors to qualify. Marci then competed in the Women’s Senior Amateur in early September right up the street at Troon CC. Although she exited the competition after stroke play, we’re all just flat-out impressed that this was her second year in a row at this prestigious USGA Championship!

I was lucky to be born and raised in Pinehurst, North Carolina where while growing up I was able to go to work with my dad who was the Director of Golf at the National Golf Club (now Pinehurst No. 9). I was in awe of his job, the relationships he built, and

Born and raised in Cave Creek, Arizona, I am blessed with loving parents and siblings, an older brother Danny who serves as a JAG for the Marines, as well as a younger sister who plays basketball overseas in Greece. Basketball was my first love before getting the golf bug in college. I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Grand Canyon University, and I’m just starting my journey into the PGA program. Working as an assistant professional for the last six years has given me amazing opportunities to travel season-to-season, from Pine Canyon and Forest Highlands in Flagstaff to Diamante in Cabo and now back home in the Valley.

My first post-graduation job was at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin where I worked three summers while traveling south for the winters at Coral Creek Club in Placida, Florida. Once I became a Class-A PGA Professional, I moved to Scottsdale to be the Lead Assistant Golf Professional at The Country Club at DC Ranch.

My fiancé, Tyler, and I fell in love with Scottsdale, and we are overjoyed to join the family at Pinnacle Peak Country Club. When I am not at the golf course, you will find me either hiking, cooking, or cheering for the Green Bay Packers.

BOSTON RICHARDSON ASSISTANT GOLF PROFESSIONAL | brichardson@pp-cc.org In my second season at Pinnacle Peak Country Club, I recently celebrated my first year of marriage with my wonderful wife, Aleah, and together we care for our dog, Jack. I am currently in Level 2 of the PGA PGM program and hope to become a member of the PGA by the end of 2024. When I am not at the golf course, I enjoy camping/hunting, playing pickleball, and doing regular maintenance on my truck.

TONY WRIGHT ASSISTANT GOLF PROFESSIONAL | twright@pp-cc.org Born and raised in Phoenix, I spent five years in Chicago selling custom suits before my wife and I decided to return home in late 2019 to be closer to family. I have been happily married to my wife, Carina, since 2018, and we have a wonderful two-year-old daughter named Kaja. With her on board, my hobbies outside of golf have transformed into time spent watching Kaja grow and learn; I wouldn’t have it any other way! I have been in the golf industry since returning, and I have worked at Estancia for two years, and then one summer at Quintero. I am currently working my way through the PGA program.

ISABELLE “IZZY” MARCHINO ASSISTANT GOLF PROFESSIONAL | imarchino@pp-cc.org Born and raised in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, I have been in the industry since 2016 and have loved learning the different aspects of the golf industry. I am grateful to have two loving parents, two older siblings and an 11-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer. I graduated from the University of Jamestown with a major in health and fitness administration and two minors in management and business administration. The past three summers I have worked at Colorado Golf Club in Parker, Colorado. Last winter I worked at Desert Mountain, and I’m currently finishing Level-1 in the PGA program.

KAREN DAVIES DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTION | kdavies@pp-cc.org Karen, originally from Wrexham, North Wales, has been involved with golf since she was a child, playing and competing at every level of golf. She has competed individually for her state, college and country successfully as a highly skilled golfer and tour player.

Karen has been teaching and coaching the game of golf for more than 20 years, with a passion for supporting and coaching every golfer as they achieve their golf goals. “I am dedicated to getting to know and understand each golfer as a person. Then, together we connect and identify ‘their’ fundamentals; craft and create ways for ‘every golfer’ to develop their golf skills via processes each golfer owns. My main mission is to contribute to seeing ‘happier golfers!’”

SPOTLIGHTON MEMBERSHIP SCOTTSDALE DEVELOPERS MAY LACK ‘THE WRIGHT STUFF’

Good, bad or ugly, true, half-true or totally false, people can say anything about you when you’re dead and can’t defend yourself.

Take developers – please, as many around Scottsdale would say.

A company announced plans to change 125 acres of North Scottsdale desert land into the Mack Innovation Park. The name is only the beginning of the grandiloquent project that claims “a design that is inspired by the historical and cultural context of Frank Lloyd Wright.”

Repeatedly referring to the architect – who extended his extraordinary vision here with the Taliesin West, as well as Biltmore Hotel and the Wright House – the Mack developers claimed their project “will greatly enhance the design character of the area.”

A headline to a Progress story wondered if the developers were “Wright or wrong?”

“Not Wright, that’s for sure,” Stuart Irwin declared, in a social media post. Another was even harsher: “Frank Lloyd Wright would be turning in his grave if he knew the destruction of the beautiful desert would be ‘Frank Lloyd Wright inspired space’ buildings!

“I have seen buildings that claim to be ‘Wright inspired’ and it’s an insult to his work and legacy.”

The signature: Kim Lloyd Wright. Not a clever pseudonym – it’s on her birth certificate.

Being the great-granddaughter of the American architectural vanguard and Scottsdale legend made Kim Lloyd Wright feel she had to speak up, she told the Progress over lunch at the Pinnacle Peak Country Club, a long fairway (but short auto) drive from her North Scottsdale home. She only met her great-grandfather a few times, but has fuzzy memories of celebrating Easter with him at Taliesin West. Kim Lloyd Wright said she was utterly outraged by a developer’s plans to “flip” desert land into an industrial park.

“This is a first, for a developer to claim that,” Kim Lloyd Wright said, grimacing at the thought of Mack Innovation Park. “But there are homes where the realtors would advertise as ‘Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired’ so that they could gain interest in the home and possibly be able to sell it for more money – but it had nothing to do with Frank Lloyd Wright.”

The 156th anniversary of Frank Lloyd Wright’s birth is coming this week. Born June 8, 1867, in rural Wisconsin, he died two months shy of his 92nd birthday April 9, 1959, at a Phoenix hospital.

In 70 years, he designed over 1,000 homes and commercial structures.

He leaned heavily into what he called “organic architecture…. Nor cherishing any preconceived form fixing upon us either past, present, or future,” as he once wrote, “but instead exalting the simple laws of common sense or of super-sense if you prefer determining form by way of the nature of materials.”

He might be best known for designing a lavish-yet-natural structure over a waterfall: Fallingwater in western Pennsylvania. “That's my favorite,” Kim Lloyd Wright said. “It is just so unique and it's so beautiful.”

She shakes her head at the idea of going from Fallingwater to Mack’s “Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired” warehouses. Fallingdesert, maybe …

Even as she sees Scottsdale’s desert charm being chipped away year by year, Kim Lloyd Wright clutches onto a love of the landscape she shares with her great-grandfather. He fell in love with the Arizona desert, Kim said, “Because it was organic. It was nature, it was beautiful.

As a child, she also spent a lot of time at her grandparents' nearby home, the David and Gladys Wright House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Kimberly Lloyd Wright has not quite lived in the Valley her entire life, as she moved with her husband, Mark Kuntz, to California for a year-and-a-half.

“I hated it,” Kim said. “So we moved back here and this is where I'm comfortable.”

Unlike her famous forefathers, Kim Lloyd Wright says she has no talent for architecture: “I can’t draw a straight line.” Her hobby is show horses, with a past favorite she called Wright On. What would FLW think?

In the highly unlikely event he would have lived to be 156, what would Frank Lloyd Wright think of Scottsdale 2023, with its bustling Old Town, booming businesses and miles of gated communities?

Not much, his great-granddaughter decides. “Probably too crowded. Too commercial … I think that he would not like the more cookie cutter homes that are going up nowadays.” And she is certain as water falls that FLW would not agree that putting up industrial buildings would “improve” the desert, as the Mack developers boast.

“They're building something on the desert as if it's like this horrible, sad desert. That’s why my great-grandfather came here because of the beauty and that's why I posted that he would be turning over in his grave – if he had one,” Kim added, with what might be called organic cynicism.

As you know, a medical emergency can happen at any time, and the actions taken in those first few minutes may mean the difference between life and death. Please take a moment and review the following suggestions to assist your fellow members and guests in the event of a medical emergency.

Please program the PPCC Golf Shop number 480.585.0385 and the PPCC clubhouse number 480.585.6992 into your cell phone under titles that will be easy to find.

For a medical emergency on the golf course or in the clubhouse, call 911 immediately. The 911 operator will ask you a series of questions about the situation and dispatch first responders. The 911 operator will ask you to remain on the phone. Then direct one of your playing partners to call the golf shop, notify a staff member of the situation, and report your exact location. For example, "John Doe appears to be having a heart attack; we have called 911; help is on the way; we are by the 14th green.” If you are alone with the victim, ask the 911 operator to call Pinnacle Peak Country Club and inform the staff of the situation. Our team will immediately clear the golf staging area and provide the responders with the quickest route to the victim upon arrival. Should a situation occur when the golf shop is closed, please call the clubhouse, and follow the same process.

Currently, the club has Automated External Defibrillators (AED), which are portable, life-saving devices designed to treat people experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. The AEDs are located in the golf bag room, fitness center, the grill and lounge service station, golf course bathrooms, tennis court and golf course maintenance shop.

Our managers and mid-managers have received their CPR/AED certification.

We sincerely hope to never encounter these situations, but if we do, these simple steps will help us provide the person in need with the best opportunity for a safe and healthy recovery.

AQUA FITNESS TUESDAY & THURSDAY / 11:30A

Get fit during a challenging water workout with minimal impact on your spine, shoulders, hips and knees. This session also incorporates in-pool stretching, core and strength training using water for resistance, assistance and comfort.

The club contracts several insured professionals, providing a wide scope of services to the PPCC Membership. The policy states: “It is the policy of Pinnacle Peak Country Club that members will not bring in outside trainers for any activities where PPCC has an employee or contracted individual(s) available. This includes, but is not limited to, gym/flexibility training; fitness/aquatic fitness; tennis/pickleball; golf; and swimming lessons. Any deviation from this will need to be presented to the general manager for approval.”

Heated to 85 degrees through the season, the lap pool makes learning to swim fun and comfortable. Certified Red Cross Swim Instructor service is available at the either the club pool or private pools, and private or semi-private swim lessons are offered year-round. Prices vary with flexible days/times.

Your leadership team has been working hard during overseeding to prepare all facets of the club, so we are ready to start another great season!

EXAMPLES INCLUDE: • Golf course overseed came in great, new collars have grown in well and the greens look fantastic!

• Fresh flowers have been planted around the clubhouse and range house.

• Golf carts have all been detailed and are ready to go.

• New range balls will be ready as we move back to the north end of the range.

• Coffee in the lounge/dining room has been upgraded to “Press Coffee,” a local Phoenix roastery favorite.

We have also added 2 new espresso machines!

• All the carpet, tile, and furniture have been professionally cleaned.

• The fire sprinkler system has been serviced and necessary replacements have been made.

• New hires have been getting trained and are ready for the season.

• New menus are rolling out and chef is creating some new and exciting events.

• We have rolled out a new human resources information system, Paylocity, which will generate more HR efficiency and will be user-friendly and interactive for the staff.

SOCIAL MEDIA We will be kicking off our Instagram page in November. After we finalize the setup, we will send out additional details allowing members to be able to follow us as we will be posting lots of upcoming events, tournament winners, dinner specials, and FUN around the club!!

COMMUNICATION UPDATE: APP/WEBSITE – We are in the process of launching a new and improved app for the members as well as upgrades to our website. A few of the new app features will be the ability to make dinner reservations, view and pay your bill online, access the calendar of events, club rules, bylaws, roster, make tee times, etc. More info to follow.

Setup and staff training is scheduled to start in November, and we anticipate going live after the first of the year.

Website upgrades will be ongoing and are expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2024.

DRESS CODE FRIENDLY REMINDER Please share the Club’s dress code with guests joining you to golf, dine, or accompanying you to any of the Club’s events. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding!

When enforcing the Dress Code, staff members will use discretion in how to handle the situation. Some instances will require immediate action of purchasing new clothing or changing. Other instances will require the staff member to notify the members of the dress code infraction but allow the person to continue to play or use the Club.

MEN’S DRESS CODE 1. Hats should be worn with bill forward facing and must be removed when in all formal Club dining areas.

2. Men’s hats are restricted to the Grill and patios.

3. Men must wear tucked-in collared golf shirts on the golf course and in Clubhouse areas at all times. Mock collared shirts, turtlenecks and blade collars are acceptable.

4. Fashion shirts and button downs that are designed to be worn untucked are acceptable in Clubhouse areas.

5. Shorts need to be longer in length. General custom has been within 4 inches of the knee.

6. Cargo shorts or pants are not permitted.

7. Denim jeans are not permitted on the golf course or practice facilities. Denim is acceptable in Clubhouse areas.

WOMEN’S DRESS CODE 1. Women may wear hats while in dining areas of the Club.

2. Women must wear tops that are tasteful. Collars are not required, but garments need to be suitable for golf. Halter tops, tank tops, spaghetti straps and other garments, that are not conservative in nature, or are not a form of formal wear, are not appropriate.

Garments that show some of the wearer’s shoulder blade are acceptable if bra straps are not seen.

3. Clothing worn for workouts is not appropriate on the golf course or practice facilities. Yoga pants may not be worn alone, but they may be worn under skirts or skorts. Shorts and skorts need to be generally marketed and sold as golf attire.

4. Denim jeans are not permitted on the golf course or practice facilities. Denim is acceptable in Clubhouse areas.

GENERAL INFORMATION 1. It is the responsibility of the Member to advise their guests, in advance, of the Club’s dress code.

2. Shoes, sandals or other appropriate foot coverings shall be worn at all times.

3. Swimming apparel may not be worn anywhere outside the pool area, locker rooms and parking lot.

4. Metal spikes are not permitted. Any approved non-metal spike alternative may be worn including tennis shoes, teaching shoes, soft spikes and other competing plastic spike alternatives.

5. Athletic apparel is allowed in the fitness center, locker rooms and pool area only.

6. Dress code may be modified or relaxed for specific club events.

7. Children 12 years old and older are expected to adhere to the dress code policy.

As we head into the busy months, I want to remind everyone of a few important club rules. It is exciting to welcome guests to the club, just a reminder that guests must be accompanied by a member when visiting the club. The member is also responsible for reiterating the general club rules including the dress code to their guests. We really appreciate your help!

STAFF As we pass the baton from our tenured superstar Diane Gregg, we are excited to welcome Jennifer Moore as our new Member Relations and Communications Coordinator! Her first day will be Monday, November 6th. Jennifer is passionate about using communications and events to bring people together and celebrate both the everyday and special moments in people's lives. A proud graduate of Indiana University (Go Hoosiers!), she moved from Indiana to the Navajo Reservation to student-teach and spent 16 years as a high school English/CTE teacher before leaving education to pursue a career in hospitality. She has spent the last four years at Anthem Golf and Country Club where she worked in both Member Experience and Club Management roles and was fortunate to build a positive team and Member culture, two other things she cares deeply about. In her spare time, Jennifer enjoys hanging out with her two kids, working out, reading, traveling, chips and salsa, and sipping the occasional Old Fashioned.

THANK YOU to ALL team members for making PPCC such a special place!

It’s invaluable to have employees that know everything from your name to what you like to drink, where you want to sit, and the ball you play. In fact, PPCC proudly boasts two team members with more than 40 years at the club! We also have five employees of more than 20 years, five of more than 15 years, and six who have been with us for more than 10 years. This is a tremendous compliment to the members and the leadership team for providing such a great culture and work environment!

Congratulations to Cody Horstman, the new Director of Agronomy! Cody and his team have done a fantastic job, and he elevated first assistant, Jason Gray, to the superintendent position. These changes help maximize the ground crew’s effectiveness as well as giving team members opportunities for advancement. Also, thank you for keeping the golf course in great shape, despite extreme temperatures.

Jennifer Meekins, HR Manager/Executive Assistant, achieved the Society for Human Resource Management Certification. She passed the four-month course and four-hour exam with flying colors! The course and test covered behavioral competencies and functional knowledge areas, allowing Jennifer to enhance, grow and improve the club’s Human Resources Department.

Assistant Golf Professional Tony Wright was recently in Frisco, Texas where he passed his Level 2 PGA/PGM seminar. Congratulations to Tony, as he pursues his Class-A PGA membership!

Likewise, Assistant Golf Professional Boston Richardson attended his PGA/PGM Level 1 seminar in October.

Pinnacle Peak Head Golf Professional, Richard Abbot, accepted a new position at Briarwood Golf Club in Sun City West. Congratulations, Richard, on your new opportunity and thank you for a job well done while a part of our team! As I write this newsletter article, I first want to recognize that it will be the final one with Diane Gregg at the helm! Diane has been such an important part of PPCC for the last 23 years; we will miss her dearly! I want to say one last resounding “THANK YOU” for all she has done and the positive impact she has left on members, the club and fellow employees! Of course, Bingo will never be the same!

Cody and his golf course maintenance team did an amazing job during the hot summer. We are now excited to see the winter ryegrass takeover and the temperatures drop, as we prepare for another great season! For many of us, that means “preparing” in the gym, with personal training, stretching and fitness classes with Aaron Taylor and Kim Hines!

With 25 years’ experiences as a flexibility therapist, Aaron developed a keen eye and feel for the human body by working with everything from knee and hip replacements to Parkinson’s disease and polio. Aaron’s professional athlete clientele includes our own Hall of Famer Betsy King and Muhammad Ali, who was featured with Aaron in Sports Illustrated. Aaron graduated from Adams State University in Colorado with a bachelors in sports and exercise management, and while in the master’s program, the three-time all-conference golfer also coached the golf team to its first top-10 ranking. Kim, an Arizona native who swam competitively, started in the fitness industry as a group exercise instructor through high school and college. After earning a degree from ASU in recreation management/exercise science, she worked as an exercise specialist for the Spa at Camelback Inn. then she led a multidisciplinary exercise team as fitness director for the La Camarilla Raquet & Fitness Club. Affiliated with the Medical Fitness Network, Kim is a certified paramedic, public information officer and other certifications include functional movement, aqua fitness, yoga, Pilates, tactical conditioning, post rehabilitation and special populations. She enjoys biking, hiking, yoga , meditation, swimming and spending time with family and friends.

Kim is excited to be a part of the PPCC group exercise programming and looks forward to developing and improving programs for all to enjoy. Kim offers complimentary fitness classes on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, including Stretch & Yoga Roll, Strength and Aqua Fit. Signup sheets are located at the front desk or call the clubhouse.

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH 19 PINNACLE PEAK COUNTRY CLUB

It seems our summer weather may be in the rear-view mirror, but as history has proven, I’m willing to bet we’re in for one final surge. What an amazingly dry and hot summer we endured this year. If you were brave enough to play at PPCC during this timeframe, you would’ve had a hard time seeing any ill effects of the extreme heat, as Cody and his team did a fantastic job in maintaining superior playing conditions for us and our guests. On behalf of the membership, I’d like to extend a big thank you to the maintenance staff for their hard work and dedication. Now that we only have a few more fans left to have installed, I am confident we will continue to see above-average conditions for our course versus others.

I am pleased to announce that PPCC will be hosting the Monday Qualifier for the WM Phoenix Open on February 5, 2024. We are very excited to be hosting this event at PPCC and showcasing our course. There will be more details released in the coming months regarding the schedule for this event, so please be on the lookout for those. We are expecting it to be a full-field event, as the WM Phoenix Open is not an elevated event this year with a limited field. This will be a great opportunity to see “what will/would the pros shoot at PPCC.” We would like to thank the organized groups that play on Mondays for their willingness to accommodate this event.

As we head into season, I am looking forward to the return of our members during the coming months. It is always fun when the club is in full swing and seeing great participation from the members. It kicked off with the Homecoming Party on November 3rd.
