As they say, time flies when you’re having fun, and I think it’s safe to say a great time was had by everyone throughout our busy season here at PPCC. Doug Potter and Phil Housley emerged as both El Cannip Gentlemen’s Member-Member tournament champions as well as from the El Cannip swimming hole behind the 9th green after their triumphant plunge! Thank you to all our members and staff who helped make the entire 2022-2023 tournament season a success!
Now in our warmer summer months, we hope you plan to take advantage of our extended daylight hours to get in a few extra holes. We have a nice list of summer reciprocal golf opportunities at surrounding Valley clubs for you to enjoy. Please call the Golf Shop, and we will be happy to assist in making reciprocal times for you.
Our Men’s Summer Derby is also back after last summer’s best-attended season ever. This 9-hole, pure-alternate-shot competition begins each Thursday with the team drawing at 4:45 PM and 5:00 PM shotgun start. Registrations are taken on the day of play only and not in advance. PPCC members may host up to two guests each week for cart fees only, no guest fee. We look forward to another exciting season of Derby play!
Junior Summer Camps are also back with three camps in June and more in July, should there be interest. Space is filling up quickly, so register your junior golfer soon to make sure they have a spot. Children, grandchildren, and friends are welcome to join. Registration is available on ForeTees under the events tab. We look forward to teaching the future of our great game!
The golf course will again be closed July 10-20 to complete all of our summer maintenance in a condensed period of time. This single closure allows us to have better course conditions longer into June and July, as well as get back into good shape more quickly compared to dragging out maintenance practices over the summer.
For those of you who depart for cooler temperatures over the summer, we wish you the best and look forward to your return. For those of us who are here year-round, just remember, it’s a dry heat!

We would like to thank everyone for another great season at PPCC and wish everyone a great summer wherever you may spend yours.
We are seeing great growth and recovery in the greens. The prolonged cold wet winter inhibited the bentgrass growth and recovery. The roots are actively spreading and deepening back down to about 6-8 inches and lengthening, as we prepared them for the summer stress.
We also will be performing a significant amount of brushing to help the grass stand up vertically, allowing the ball to roll on the tips of the leaf blade, instead of the side. Brushing is also very instrumental for increasing turf density and alleviating grain in the grass.
We aerified the greens on May 8 and 9, maintaining higher cut heights on the greens after aerification and throughout the summer to protect the health of the bentgrass during the stressful summer months.
You will see the greens and grounds department become more active in hosing or syringing the greens throughout the day. We respectfully ask that you please be careful and help keep our staff safe during this practice. Please pause and/or yield for the sta ff to complete their job, as this is a very di ffi cult and strenuous task during the summer stress months.
The transition back to bermudagrass is in full swing. It is very encouraging to see how much is coming through the overseed on the fairways, tees, and approaches given what a prolonged cold winter we had. As we moved into summer, we made a series of applications to slowly and methodically remove the overseeded ryegrass. The grass
will not go brown or disrupt play at all. Instead, it will lighten to a pale green, which is the same very successful process we have used for four years.
We have several projects coming this summer. We will be adding six fans to the golf course. We are currently working with APS to run power from Pinnacle Peak Road to power them. Players will see a significant amount of trenching being performed for several weeks, which will be completed in July.
We will be improving the drainage to the area north of No. 8 green, between the homes where the drainage water enters the golf course. This will be done to fix the water that is dammed up above the turf and also to remedy the need to pump the water after every storm. This will also improve the aesthetics of the area as well as a long-term solution to the drainage problem. We will be lowering all the turf on each side of the bank and will add a four-foot-wide cement channel that will let all water through to empty the drainage basin completely after storms.
We will be re-grading and improving the desert to the west of No. 16, between the tee and the homes. This will primarily be a grading project to slow and hold the water to control the erosion issues in the area. We will redirect and brace several embankments to help the erosion issues for the golf course and the homes in the area.
We hope you enjoy your summer. We look forward to seeing you on the course. For those of you who do not spend your summers here, we will see you when you return.
We battled the cold and rain most of the season and wondered when it would end. I think we can now say: it’s finally behind us! Niners’ highlights included Play for Pink, raising $31,000, plus it was the best-ever silent auction, raising $9,600. Membership began with 98 members, and we're currently up to 107. The member/guest day was a big success, with 54 ladies attending dressed in their favorite baseball attire. Interclub was a wonderful addition to the Niners this season. The ladies had an opportunity to play different courses and meet new friends. Pinnacle Peak hosted it in April, and it was a lovely experience for the guests and our ladies who played.
Closing Day Luncheon was a beautiful day, with 37 ladies in attendance playing a scramble. I can’t thank our food and beverage staff enough for the delicious lunch and the beautiful dessert. Also, many thanks to the Golf Shop for all their hard work to make the Niners’ season such a success.
Thank you, ladies for allowing me to lead the WGA this past year. The weather was challenging, but you all persevered. A huge “thank you” to the members who chaired and/or helped chair an event this year.
Thank you to the ladies who led our teams – Mountain Team, Marci DuBois and Kathy Hayes and – Valley Team, Pam Potter and Bev Frain. A heartfelt thank you to Lynn Matthews who was the “coordinator” for the Mountain Team. You all did a fabulous job. See you in the fall!

Please consider attending a lifesaving CPR/AED class. Member Mitch Berger is sure glad he did. While attending a wedding dinner in Cabo San Lucas, Mitch sprang into action and performed the Heimlich maneuver when a friend at the table began to choke on a piece of steak. Without any other upper-airway, first-aid training outside of what he learned at PPCC, Berger is convinced the class saved his friend’s life.
Our tennis and pickleball courts are in high demand. It’s important to first reserve them up to seven days in advance through the PPCC ForeTees app.

Members, for your safety and enjoyment, we are now securing access to our tennis and pickleball courts. A coded, manual digital lock has been installed to allow our members to use the same entry code to gain access to the courts. This code will be changed periodically, and you will receive ample notice. This digital lock is to ensure our courts are utilized only by our members and their guests. This type of lock is combined with a self-closing gate that ensures the area is closed to anyone without the code for access. This will also prevent court vandalism, damage to the surface, and the integrity of netting and striping.
THE ACCESS CODE IS: C279Z AND ALSO RECORDED ON FORETEES
Online tennis or pickleball reservations can be made by clicking on the ForeTees link located on the home page of our website, www.pp-cc.org.
We held our first successful pickleball tournament on March 19th, and it was a great success! Congratulations to Jim Brennan, our reigning PPCC Pickleball Tournament Champion!!
The second pickleball tournament of the year kicked off May 7. Once again, everyone had a great time and congratulations to the champs.
During the 100-year storm in August of 2022, the maintenance building took a direct hit and sustained major damage. The 40-year-old building was barley left standing. Efforts are currently underway to avert stormwater flowing toward the maintenance building to prevent this from happening again.
This construction project is the most signifi cant project on the horizon for Pinnacle Peak Country Club, and it’s imperative that we consider the health and safety of our employees. The plan has been on the backburner for many years, and is now a priority, after barely surviving the storm and creating an unhealthy work environment for our employees.
We are now in pool season. After many vendor delays, we are thrilled to announce that our new pool furniture has arrived and is ready for your enjoyment! We ask that you please adhere to the pool rules posted, and as a reminder:
There is no lifeguard on duty at any time at the PPCC pool.
• Children aged 11 years old or younger must be with an adult
• Please watch your children around water.
• No jumping off the rocks in the center of the pool.
• No glass or personal coolers are allowed in the pool area.
• Keep pool gates closed – no propping open.
• No running.
Hungry at the turn! Please call the Range House from the 8th tee and place your order. We will have it ready for you as you head to the tenth hole.
Please keep phones on vibrate while in the Clubhouse and fitness area.
LED lighting has been installed at the tennis/pickleball courts. They’re safe, consume less electricity and provide bright light.
Pets are not allowed in the clubhouse or on the patios. Walking pets on club grounds is permitted before 7a and after 6p. Member, spouse, or member’s partner must accompany children under 12.
I’m happy to say that PPCC has joined in with many other golf clubs and allied associations as a sponsor of the Arizona Alliance for Golf (AAG). Below is an update from the alliance along with a link that will take you to the AAG page.
Despite the wet winter season, Arizona's water challenges will only get more difficult. The federal government is expected to release their plan for the next round of cuts to the Colorado River water that provides the Valley with much of its water supply. Maricopa County municipalities are continuing to plan and strategize about how to mitigate impacts stemming from those cuts. As the AAG advances important messaging related to the golf industry's water stewardship and leadership in the water conservation space, it has developed messaging around other key bene fi ts of the industry in Arizona. As we seek to proactively tell the Arizona golf story with key constituencies around the state, we encourage you to share these videos with your networks.

Most everyone likes to enjoy a cold beverage while on the course or afterward in the clubhouse. Please enjoy in moderation, be responsible, and be respectful of fellow members, guests, and employees. The team does a great job of assuring members have a good time and we want to make sure everyone gets home safely.
Hydration - With summer temps here, it is important to stay hydrated. Plenty of water is available in the golf cart coolers as well as at stations on the course, at the pool, and at the tennis/pickleball courts.

As you know, a medical emergency can happen at any time, and the actions taken in those first few minutes may mean the difference between life and death. Please take a moment and review the following suggestions to assist your fellow members and guests in the event of a medical emergency.
Please program the PPCC Golf Shop number 480.585.038 5 and the PPCC clubhouse number 480.585.6992 into your cell phone under titles that will be easy to find.
For a medical emergency on the golf course or in the clubhouse, call 911 immediately. The 911 operator will ask you a series of questions about the situation and dispatch first responders. The 911 operator will ask you to remain on the phone. Then direct one of your playing partners to call the Golf Shop, notify a staff member of the situation, and report your exact location. For example, "John Doe appears to be having a heart attack; we have called 911; help is on the way; we are by the 14th green.” If you are alone with the victim, ask the 911 operator to call Pinnacle Peak Country Club and inform the staff of the situation. Our team will immediately clear the golf staging area and provide the responders with the quickest route to the victim upon arrival. Should a situation occur when the Golf Shop is closed, please call the clubhouse, and follow the same process. Currently, the club has Automated External Defibrillators (AED), which are portable, life-saving devices designed to treat people experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. The AEDs are located in the golf bag room, fitness center, the grill and lounge service station, golf course bathrooms, tennis court and golf course maintenance shop. Our managers and mid-managers have received their CPR/AED certification.
We sincerely hope to never encounter these situations, but if we do, these simple steps will help us provide the person in need with the best opportunity for a safe and healthy recovery.
In the tradition of honoring the past, present and future of women’s golf, the LPGA Foundation once again celebrated the pioneers of the game at the Cognizant Founders Cup, May 11-14 at Upper Montclair Country Club.
The event honors the 13 Founders of the LPGA and the Pioneers who followed them to build the world’s oldest and most successful women’s professional sports league. The tournament supports the LPGA*USGA Girls Golf program, which has introduced more than one million girls to the game of golf.
LPGA Pioneers are women who venture into unclaimed territory. They are women who open new areas of thought and development in the game. These women exemplify the pioneering spirit always blazing a trail and leading others to follow. These women are instrumental in actively participating to advance and grow the LPGA.
This year, the 2023 Pioneers being honored are World Golf and LPGA Hall of Fame member Betsy King, and noted author, instructor and member of the National Golf Coaches Hall of Fame, Pia Nilsson (who currently is on our wait list to join PPCC).
King joined the LPGA Tour in 1977 and toiled for seven winless seasons before becoming one of the most prolific winners in LPGA Tour history. Her first victory was the 1984 Women’s Kemper Open, the first of three titles that year. She also had 21 top-10 finishes in 1984, which earned her the Rolex LPGA Player of the Year award. From 1984 through 1989, King won a total of 20 LPGA events, more wins than any other golfer in the world, male or female, during that period.
After that first win, King captured at least one win a year for the next decade. In 1989 she had a career-high of six victories. She finished in the top 10 on the money list every year from 1985–1995, and again in 1997. Along the way, she was named Rolex LPGA Player of the Year three times, won two scoring titles and three money titles. King averaged winning a major a year from 1987 to 1992 and then added a sixth major in 1997. She won the U.S. Women’s Open twice, the Chevron Championship three times, and the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship once. The last of her 34 LPGA Tour wins came in 2001. In 1995, she was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. King played on United States Solheim Cup team five times (1990, 1992, 1994, 1996 and 1998) and captained the winning U.S. team in 2007.
A supporter of many charitable causes throughout her career, King was so moved by a trip to Rwanda, Zambia, and Tanzania that she formed a charity called Golf Fore Africa (GFA) in 2007. Working with World Vision, GFA has installed over 450 freshwater wells throughout Zambia, providing potable water and changing the lives of more than 300,000 people.
Patty Rivas has brought a positive attitude to work as server assistant in the Food & Beverage Department for the past 15 years. Born in Hidalgo, Mexico and raised in the Valley, when not working, Patty enjoys jogging, gardening, and spending time with her family, two of whom also work at PPCC.
Jose Acuna has been a positive and helpful teammate. Jose has helped repair the Building Maintenance cart multiple times and helped repair the Driving Range Picker cart in an emergency. All in addition to keeping all the equipment in Greens & Grounds Department running. Jose has been the equipment manager for just over a year. He was promoted when the past equipment manager of 35 years retired. We appreciate and thank Jose for all his hard work and effort to making PPCC a great place for our members and employees.
Daniel Daines brings a positive attitude to work as a server, never hesitating to go above and beyond. Originally from Sedona, Daniel lives in Tempe where he is currently enrolled at ASU pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business administration. Daniel enjoys hockey and serving our membership!
Emily Herring is a vital member of our food and beverage team as our dining room supervisor, she continues to exceed our expectations with her effort and professionalism. Emily was born in Maryland and received her hospitality management degree from Virginia’s James Madison University. She enjoys reading, hiking, and going above and beyond to serve our membership.
We are pleased to announce that Andrew Maitrejean has been hired to be Pinnacle Peak Country Club’s new controller. Andrew has an extensive background in accounting and has previously worked at Troon in Scottsdale as a senior accounting manager and at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, California as their controller. We are confident that Andrew will quickly become a member of the PPCC family and will successfully support the finance committee and the membership in his new controller role.
With the introduction of one, we must say goodbye to another. Susan Jones has been in the controller role at Pinnacle Peak Country Club since March of 2020. We are very appreciative of the hard work that Susan has done for the club over the last three years, and she will be missed. We wish Susan the best of success in all her future endeavors.

I want to start by thanking the entire team for facilitating great golf and social events and our first-ever pickleball tournament! Congrats to all the winners! A lot of prep work goes into making these events successful and enjoyable. I am very honored and proud to work alongside such a caring team of hard-working individuals! It’s also great to see the positive energy from the members, as they gather for fun competitions, socialize, and create special lifelong relationships.
The board recently had the opportunity to attend an outstanding board retreat, which included a very informative presentation from Dick Kopplin and Marci Mills from Kopplin, Keebler and Wallace. The presentation included survey results regarding how PPCC compares to other like clubs across the country in many different categories including linkage with membership, strategic direction, board structure/processes, and an overall score. It was encouraging to see the positive scores.
There were many takeaways and improvement opportunities for PPCC, with three we wanted to highlight: improved and effective communication; improving and sharing the board and committee member selection; and creating a committee member onboarding process.
Discussions are already underway with the strategic planning committee, and we are looking forward to being better positioned as we move into our next fiscal cycle.
As you are aware, the biggest project on the table is rebuilding the golf course maintenance building. With just a quick peek at the facility, you will easily see why this project is necessary. Originally built in 1976, the building is in need of a “redo.” The golf course is the club’s No.1 asset, and the staff who take care of it deserve the most professional working environment possible. This will also help Cody with employee recruitment and retention! Thanks to Mark Kuntz, Bill Harris, and Todd Weber for all their work on the project.
A special thanks to all the committee members, the board and the executive committee for their time and commitment to the club.
Safe travels to all the members that leave for the summer. And for those of you who stay, we look forward to continuing the fun!
To say we’ve had a bizarre year for weather is an understatement. In the 21 years I’ve been in the Valley, this past winter was the coolest and rainiest. The golf course appreciated it, but us golfers, not so much. Now that the heat is on, we have already started to see the traffic at PPCC slow down. We’d like to wish everyone safe travels this summer as you take a break from the heat.
We are over the halfway point in our fiscal year and are operating ahead of budget. With increases in labor and operational costs, we are pleased with the overall results. We will, once again, take these increases into consideration for the 2023-2024 budget. The club continues to operate at capacity while still maintaining a waitlist of approximately 80 people for golf membership and 15 for social.
In addition to the maintenance building project, we also have a proposed kitchen renovation project coming down the road. Our current kitchen is not ideal, and the renovation will deliver the quality and consistency our membership enjoys and expects. This project is anticipated to begin taking shape well into 2024.
The Arizona Alliance for Golf (www.azallianceforgolf.org) is continuing to work on behalf of Arizona’s golf courses. For those not familiar, please visit the above website and join to stay informed. At PPCC, we are fortunate to have Cody and Jim, aka Murph, taking active roles with this group. Cody has kept us ahead of schedule with impending water reductions and monitors this closely. Murph continues to serve with the alliance’s membership committee and keeps us apprised of progress.
Finally, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the many members that came out for the Divot Filling Party on May 2nd. It was great to see so many members truly taking pride in ownership of our golf course. The sense of community and great core values are just a couple aspects that continue to make PPCC such a desirable club. Thank you to all the members and staff for your continued support, and I wish everyone a safe and prosperous summer!
THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH
“BE YOURSELF; EVERYONE ELSE IS ALREADY TAKEN.”
