FAN CODE OF CONDUCT FANS WILL RESPECT THE TOURNAMENT PLAYERS, CADDIES, OFFICIALS AND OTHER FANS

We take pride in the fact that the WM Phoenix Open presented by Taylor Morrison has become one of the premier sporting events in the country, attracting record numbers of fans from throughout the United States and the world. To ensure a fun, safe and memorable experience for all, please adhere to the tournament’s Code of Conduct.

Fans will enjoy the WM Phoenix Open free from disruptive behavior including, but not limited to, FOUL OR ABUSIVE LANGUAGE, obscene gestures, fighting, throwing objects, attempting to disrupt play or distract tournament players from their professional game. Such behavior includes taunting players, caddies and officials, volunteers or other fans. Those who engage in any of these actions are subject to immediate ejection from the tournament and subject to criminal trespass.

Tournament volunteers, ambassadors, security and police personnel are trained to intervene where necessary to help ensure that the previous expectations are met, and fans are encouraged to report any inappropriate behavior to the nearest tournament representative.

Underage fans who are found to be consuming alcoholic beverages or any fan who assists in purchasing or supplying alcoholic beverages to underage fans will be removed from the tournament grounds in a prompt and safe manner and subject to criminal prosecution.

Fans will avoid engaging in behavior that endangers the safety of tournament players, caddies, officials, volunteers or other spectators.

Fans consuming alcoholic beverages will do so in a responsible manner. Impaired or intoxicated fans will be removed from the tournament grounds and subject to criminal trespass or prosecution.

The Thunderbirds reserve the right to deny entry or eject from the tournament any fans displaying inappropriate or disruptive behavior.

Fans who choose not to adhere to any of these provisions will be subject to ejection without refund. Hospitality Package holders and/or their guests who are identified violating any of these provisions are subject to revocation of their hospitality suite, box and/or package for the remainder of the tournament and all future tournaments.

ROUND 1: SCOTTSDALE LOCALS CROWD LEADERBOARD A frost delay pushed first round tee times back by one hour and 50 minutes, stranding the entire afternoon wave. They resumed play on Friday morning, completing the round at 10:45. Jason Day enjoyed the first-round lead, if only for a short time until reloading for round two. He shot a bogey-free 6-under-par 65, carding three birdies per side. This turned out to be one better than Nick Taylor, Adam Hadwin and Scott Stallings, who were tied for second place at 5-under par.

The fact that all three second place players have homes in Scottsdale may have helped them navigate the first round’s “tricky conditions,” as Hadwin described. He “had to stay patient,” and deal with winds that seemed “to be swirling a little bit,” by picking his “shots, executing,” and not panicking when he “got gusted.”

Taylor’s round could have easily been even lower without the bogey and double bogey he posted on the front nine. An eagle on the third hole, however, propelled him to the back nine at 1-over par. That’s when he reeled off four-straight birdies on holes 10-13, and two more at 16 and 17 to card a 6-under 30 on the way in.

“The front is a tougher nine,” Taylor said. “To see some putts roll in on 10 and 11 was nice and obviously to continue that on 12.”

Starting on No. 10, Hadwin buried an early bogey under six birdies, and Stallings made an eagle on 13 and birdies on 17 and 18 to shoot 66 along with Taylor.

ROUND 2: SCHEFFLER SHUFFLES TO THE TOP Adam Hadwin moved up to a tie for first place in the second round after firing another 5-under-par 66, this time without making a single bogey. He sat tied for the tournament lead at 10-under alongside defending champion Scottie Scheffler, who quickly scaled the leaderboard with a second-round 7-under 64.

Thursday’s frost delay caused Scheffler to finish his first round on Friday morning on the back nine, and then shortly after, he returned again to the inward nine to start his second round.

“I didn't have the best back nine. I didn't do a good job of taking advantage of the par 5s back there,” Scheffler admitted after two pars at the otherwise very gettable 13th and 15th holes. “I had a good birdie on 12 and then good birdies and 17 and 18 to get the rest of my round kick started.”

Someone who did take advantage of the par 5s on the back nine was a red-hot Jon Rahm, who jumped into the mix, finishing two shots back and tied for second place at 8-under. Also starting the second round on No. 10, Rahm made bogey on the 11th, the hardest hole in round two, before going 4-under par over the next four holes, with a birdie at 13, eagle at 15 and birdie at 16.

A Scheffler versus Rahm matchup was beginning to materialize, not to mention the potential for other lurking players to emerge. What did Rahm think about players like Scheffler making moves?

“We have 18 of the Top-20 players in the world,” Rahm said. “You can expect a few of us to be doing that. Some of those hadn't teed off yet. So, I wouldn't be shocked if Scottie isn't leading at the end of the day.”

ROUND 3: TWO STROKES AHEAD Defending champion Scottie Scheffler fired a third-round 68 to sit on top of the leaderboard at 13-under for the tournament, two strokes clear of Jon Rahm and Nick Taylor, who sat tied for second place at 11-under.

Cooling off a bit, Scheffler hit just five of 14 fairways in the third round, a stark contrast to finding 10 of 14 fairways in each of the first two rounds.

“I didn't hit it as well today as I hoped to,” Scheffler said. “But still got around in 3-under. Kept the ball in play for the most part. Just kept plugging along. Only one bogey was good today.”

Nick Taylor regained his second place standing after his third-round 67 (4-under par). Al-

though he didn’t crack the Top-40 in any of his eight previous WM Phoenix Open starts, Taylor was in a great position to make a run at his third PGA TOUR win.

Rahm made the turn at even par and picked up birdies at 13, 14 and 16 to card a 3-under 68.

When asked about the pressure of heading into the final round while leading versus chasing from behind, Rahm offered some “simple math,” explaining, “you always want the lead. You have a cushion. It’s better. If I shoot 5-under tomorrow, Scottie shoots 4, he wins.”

And if Scottie did go on to win, he would become the eighth champion in WM Phoenix Open history to defend his title.

“I haven't been thinking about it too much,” Scheffler said. “I felt like I've been on the outside looking in on Sundays. To be in the final group with a two-shot lead, I believe, is definitely a SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER

position I want to be in. I'm looking forward to tomorrow.”

“I knew going into today it was going to be a tough day,” Scheffler said. “Jon's playing some of the best golf in the world right now. Nick's a fantastic player and a proven winner out here. There were some other names on the leaderboard like Jordan and Xander. There were a lot of guys up there.

I knew it was going to take a great round. Nobody was going to give this golf tournament to me.

I had to go out and earn it. I was definitely proud of the result.”

Nick Taylor went down swinging. He also fired a 6-under 65 to earn solo second place at 17-under par.

“I've been playing well, but my track record here is really not that great,” Taylor said. “I've worked a

lot on my putting. I putted great this week. That's kind of been my Achilles Heel out here. I feel like

I've always hit it pretty nice out here. Just wasn't able to read the greens that great. Once I saw some putts going in, I definitely got some confidence and rolled a lot of nice putts.”

Jon Rahm fell to third place at 14-under after a final-round 3-under 68. Justin Thomas came in fourth place at 13-under, while Jason Day took fifth place at 12-under par. Navigating TPC Scottsdale at the WM Phoenix Open can be a daunting challenge whether you’re a seasoned veteran or visiting the grounds for the first time. The 16th Hole AKA THE COLISEUM AKA THE STADIUM AKA THE LOUDEST HOLE IN GOLF The loudest and most exciting hole in golf features more than 17,000 roaring fans occupying the completely enclosed, three-story stadium often in matching outfits or costumes.

The 16th hole has been the site of some truly unbelievable moments like Tiger’s “raise the roof” ace in 1997, or more recently, Sam Ryder’s unbelievable hole-in-one in 2022.

A couple of years ago, the big new idea was a special pre-tournament music event to kick things off with a bang. Now, the phrase of choice is if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it – the perfect way to sum up hosting just about the coolest live-music experience anywhere – The Concert in the Coliseum presented by Swire Coca-Cola.

For the third-straight year, The Thunderbirds opened the iconic 16th hole the Saturday before the 2024 WM Phoenix Open, not to golf fans, but music fans – thousands of them. Halfway between the teebox and the most nerve-racking green in golf, a giant stage was built to play host to the Concert in the Coliseum featuring international superstar Post Malone. The event sold out in a heartbeat, and each of the nearly 12,000 lucky fans first to secure their tickets enjoyed a music festival atmosphere unlike anything else on the planet.

“We knew we had something special on our hands from the very first moment we started this a few years ago,” said 2024 tournament chairman George Thimsen. “The past two concerts were an enormous success, so of course we are thrilled to not only run it back in 2024, but also keep positive momentum going. And, of course, we were pumped to host one of the most influential artists of his generation this year to kick off tournament week in style. We hope everyone had a blast.”

SCHEFFLER RETURNS TO WINNER’S CIRCLE IN 2023 , LOOKS FOR THREE-PEAT IN 2024 It was déjà vu all over again for Scottie Scheffler as he returned to the winner’s circle at last year’s WM Phoenix Open for the second consecutive time. While the result was the same as the previous year, the manner in which he earned the trophy was quite a bit different.

Rather than sweating out a three-hole playoff with Patrick Cantlay as he did in 2022, Scheffler stood on the TPC Scottsdale’s 18th tee in the final round last year with a 3-stroke lead over Nick Taylor.

“I was definitely in a bit more of an aggressive state (in 2022) trying to make birdie and win the tournament versus this year (2023), when I was just trying not to hit in the water on 18 tee,” he said. “It was definitely a bit of an easier tee shot not having to make birdie, so I kind of sprayed one over into the crowd on the right and got on the green and two-putted.”

Scheffler became the seventh player to successfully defend his WM Phoenix Open title, following Ben Hogan (1946-47), Jimmy Demaret (1949-50), Lloyd Mangrum (1952-53), Arnold Palmer (three straight from 1961-63), Johnny Miller (1974-75), and Hideki Matsuyama (2016-17).

As for winning a single tournament three consecutive times, that’s only happened 11 times on the PGA TOUR. Not surprisingly, Tiger Woods did it six of those times, and the milestone was reached most recently in 2011 when Steve Stricker nabbed his third win in a row at the John Deere Classic.

Even though there was no playoff, Scheffler still had some work to do. After rounds of 68, 64, 68, the 26-year-old entered Sunday’s final round with a two-shot lead over Taylor and local favorite Jon Rahm. Taylor caught fire on the front nine with five birdies

to reach 15-under, while Rahm mixed a birdie and bogey to remain at 11-under. A birdie on 10 tied Taylor with Scheffler for the lead, but sinking a 22-foot eagle putt on the par-5 13th gave Scheffler the lead for good.

“That hole, if you hit the fairway, it opens up because it has a big green for a par 5,” he said of 13, where he also carded a birdie, par, and bogey during the tournament. “But that tee shot is very difficult. You’ve got a bunker and desert on the left where you can get caught in some bushes, and on the right side there is some desert with bushes and trees. So it’s a likely chip out if you don’t hit the fairway. So you get that dispersion of scores where if you hit the fairway, it could almost be a shot difference, or even more than that if you have to take an unplayable if you don’t hit the fairway.”

Taylor essentially sealed his fate with a bogey on 16, a hole Scheffler parred during all four rounds (as he also did during his win in 2022). And while Scheffler embraces the infamous atmosphere on 16 (“It’s more like a football game than a golf tournament,” he said), he also believes the short par-3 is much harder than it appears because of the firmness and speed of the green there.

“One day (in 2023) we had so much wind that my ball actually landed on the green like eight feet from the pin and should have stopped very close to the pin,” he said. “But it ended up blowing

all the way off the green. And when you get those two pins that are in the back, it’s actually a very narrow target to hit at just because of the way the green rolls off on the left side. With that firmness, and how fast they are, any time you short side yourself, it’s a very difficult up and down.”

Scheffler went for the green on 17 every round and was rewarded with birdie each time. “Yeah, I've never laid up on 17. I think one of the things that's so great about this golf course is getting the reward for good play,” he said. “So as a player, I think that's what you really appreciate about courses, and 17 is a hole where if you hit a really good tee shot, you're going to have an eagle look or have an easy up-and-down for birdie, and if you don't hit a good tee shot, you're going to be struggling for par.”

After his win, Scheffler spoke about outpacing a relatively stacked leaderboard during the final round.

“I knew going into today it was going to be a tough day. Jon’s playing some of the best golf in the world right now,” he said.

“Nick’s a fantastic player and a proven winner out here. There were some other names on the leaderboard like Jordan (Spieth) and Xander (Schauffele). There were a lot of guys up there.

I knew it was going to take a great round. Nobody was going to give this golf tournament to me. I had to go out and earn it.

I was definitely proud of the result.”

Even more impressive was the fact that one of the strengths of his game – driving – was far from on target during the week.

“I hit some wild shots off the tee that were pretty uncharacteristic for how I usually shape the ball,” said Scheffler, who hit just 53.6 percent of fairways for the week and merely 35.7 percent during the final round. “I was just able to grind it out, make a lot of putts.

I think I only had two bogeys this week, which is really, really good around this golf course.”

Scheffler heads into the 2024 WM Phoenix Open with a chance to tie a tournament record of three straight wins held by one of the game’s legends, Arnold Palmer. He met the King a few times when he was younger, but Scheffler can’t recall much from those long ago moments. Still, he understands the rare company a third consecutive victory at TPC Scottsdale would put him in alongside Palmer.

“Obviously his legacy is pretty long-lasting in the game of golf, the way he treated fans, the way he treated other players and the mark he left on the game, “ Scheffler said of Palmer.

“He’s definitely been a guy that I think we all looked up to.” n

Max Homa MORE THAN JUST THE “SOCIAL” GUY

Perhaps by his own design, it was hard to take Max Homa seriously for quite some time. After all, his ability to draw laughter and smiles from his social media activity was both clever and, well, funny.

Even though that tendency of his has served him well by way of countless loyal followers, the 33-year-old Burbank, Calif. native is now also showcasing a serious side to his approach to his career. And, while that lighthearted side of Homa continues to everyone’s delight, his ability on golf courses – especially of late – is hardly a laughing matter.

“Perhaps that was by design,” Homa said after his first of two consecutive wins at the Fortinet Championship in 2021. “I feel like the game is catching up. I think the misconception about me is because of the social media thing, people think I am kind of goofy and aloof a little bit.

But, people who know me know I work really, really hard. I pride myself on it.”

And, with six PGA TOUR titles now to his credit, no-one is second guessing his efforts and intensity.

“I'm very honored and thankful to have such a big social media following,” Homa added. “But, I also know that if my game keeps going the way I think it can go, it should even out at some point. So, I'm working towards that.”

And, by all measures, it’s safe to say the engaging gentleman has, in fact, arrived on that front.

“I work very, very hard and give pretty much everything I've got into being as good as I can at this game,” he added after winning in Napa again in 2022. “Weird as it was, I came into Napa this week as the betting favorite. Oddly, it felt OK. It didn't feel like too much pressure. There's always two ways to look at something; a negative and a positive. I think the old me would’ve looked at being a favorite to win as almost a burden. Expectation can be difficult to manage.”

Following his second consecutive win at the Fortinet Championship in the fall of 2022, in his final start before last season’s WM Phoenix Open, Homa captured his second title of the season and most recent of six overall at the Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego at Torrey Pines.

“Everybody calls me the social media guy, but I still think I'm a pretty darn good golfer. Obviously, results helped me kind of build that foundation,” Homa said. “I do like to say dumb things and make dumb jokes and observe weird stuff and post about it like a kid, I guess. But, when I work, practice and play tournaments, it’s what I love. The confidence is becoming more steady.”

And, that confidence remains as Homa heads into the 2024 WM Phoenix Open at a venue that has served him fairly well. In five starts at TPC Scottsdale, a T6 in 2020 stands as his best finish, though 18 of 20 competitive rounds in the event have been at par-or-better. In last year’s event, Homa finished T-39 at 3-under 281.

The week after last February’s WM Phoenix Open, Homa opened the Tiger Woodshosted Genesis Invitational with a 7-under 64 to claim a share of the 18-hole lead with Keith Mitchell. Though he would finish second and two strokes off Jon Rahm’s winning total of 17-under 267, the finish at Riviera Country Club was another victory for Homa’s mental strength.

“The confidence is becoming steadier,” Homa said after the runner-up finish in Los Angeles. “I've been working with a sports psychologist, who has opened my eyes to a lot of things. Having a plan each day is huge, mentally. I didn't go into a single round this week thinking about a technical or statistical goal. Instead, I went in determined to learn something. I'm putting into place what I've been working on and, this week, I feel like I did a great job of it.”

As both an exceptionally talented player on the PGA TOUR, as well as social media sensation, Homa is poised and ready for the 2024 WM Phoenix Open. And, knowing Homa, serious or not, he’ll be firing on all cylinders. n

There are two reasons the 2024 WM Phoenix Open will be a homecoming of sorts for PGA TOUR veteran Kevin Stadler. First, TPC Scottsdale is so close to Stadler’s residence he could – and did – walk home from the clubhouse after his final round in 2013.

Second, the WM Phoenix Open is the site of Stadler’s only PGA TOUR victory where he edged out Bubba Watson in 2014.

As far as “home courses” go, TPC Scottsdale isn’t a bad site. Stadler has been a Scottsdale resident since 2003 when he moved east from California after his days as a USC Trojan were in the rearview mirror. Since, Stadler has used the Stadium course as his preferred place of practice. He would tell you, however, he rarely plays the course due to difference in tournament conditions compared to the standard – yet incredibly manicured – regular “resort” conditions.

Stadler grew up with professional golf thanks to his father’s 13-win career and had made his own way onto the PGA TOUR by 2005, playing 33 events in his rookie season. But after nearly a decade into the younger Stadler’s career – which was mired in inconsistency thanks to a nagging wrist injury – a PGA TOUR win was still on his “to-do” list.

From 2005 when he turned professional until 2014, Stadler played in 238 PGA TOUR events accruing two second-place finishes, a third-place finish and 23 Top-10 finishes while never finding the winner’s circle.

But the PGA TOUR is full of parity, providing players with a proverbial “puncher’s chance” and Stadler took advantage at his “home course” for his first win in his 239th PGA TOUR start at the 2014 WM Phoenix Open. The victory got Kevin into the field at the 2014 Masters where he would compete in the same field at Augusta National as his father – something pretty special only a handful of professional athletes can claim to have done.

Stadler will return to the WM Phoenix Open for his 12th start at TPC Scottsdale thanks to a sponsor exemption from The Thunderbirds – hosts of the WM Phoenix Open. He will, no doubt, look to capture lightning in a bottle for his second professional title in 2024. n

Two-Time Winners AT THE WM PHOENIX OPEN Last year Scottie Scheffler again captured “The People’s Open” title, marking the 13th time a player has won twice in tournament history dating back to 1932. Like Sheffler’s two wins, seven of those 13 instances were backto-back victories, with five emerging right out of the gate during the first two decades of the tournament in the ‘40s and ‘50s. Six other two-time winners wedged a few years in between victories. Vijay Singh’s eight-year gap was the longest. Bob Gilder and Miller Barber both waited seven years between wins. Byron Nelson and Brooks Koepka needed six years to close the loop, and J.B. Holmes nearly captured the two-peat with his two wins in three years.

At a combined 38-under par, Singh’s scoring total topped the list of back-to-back winners, one stroke ahead of Johnny Miller and three strokes clear of Scheffler, Holmes and Barber who tied at 35-under par.

In terms of prize money, Scheffler’s win at the elevated 2022 tournament catapulted him into the lead, more than doubling the next two-time champ on the money list, Brooks Koepka. For an even more eye-popping comparison, Scheffler’s stack of cash piles up an incredible 3,000 times higher than the $1,700 Ed Oliver earned for his two victories in 1940 and 1941. Since a hot dog back then only cost 10 cents compared to $8 today for a Thunderdog, the exponential surge in prize money more than covers the 80-fold frankfurter inflation.

This year, Scheffler has the rare opportunity to join Arnold Palmer (1961, 1962, 1963) as the only players to three-peat. Three-time victories carded by Phil Mickelson, Mark Calcavecchia and Gene Littler were not consecutive.

In 2018, Matsuyama had his chance before a wrist injury forced him to withdraw.

Max Homa Finishing ninth in the 2023 FedExCup standings, Max Homa is one of the most exciting and easy-to-root-for players on the PGA TOUR. He sports a mixed record at the WM Phoenix Open. Up-and-down results exemplified last year’s showing. On Friday, fresh off of a double-bogey at 12 and a bogey at 11, he rebounded with birdies at 14, 15 and 16.

What changed?

“Not much,” said Homa after the round. “I kind of settled myself down and just went back to hitting good shots and just taking what I could get.

Fortunately, things started to go my way.”

Bounce backs appear to be his thing. He ranked first in this reactionary stat for last season, which shows the percentage of holes that scored over par immediately followed by a hole that scored less than par.

In 2020, with his driver leading the way, Homa notched, by far, his best WM Phoenix Open finish, T6,(-14), four strokes off the pace set by Webb Simpson. He hit 38 of 56 fairways (T10 for the week) and finished in ninth place for Strokes Gained Off the Tee. If Homa can combine those driving stats with the caliber of putting reflected in his 2023 season – third in putting average, sixth in Strokes Gained Putting – he’s certainly a contender at the 2024 WM Phoenix Open.

Scottie Scheffler Ride the streak until it’s not a streak anymore. This might be good advice for those passing through the new DraftKings Sportsbook at TPC Scottsdale at the tournament entrance.

Scottie Scheffler certainly will be playing with overall confidence, and after back-to-back victories, he knows how to win at TPC Scottsdale.

“I think around this place when you're hitting fairways and you're hitting it well the golf course can kind of open up for you,” he said after last year’s second round. “But the opposite can happen in a hurry because there's trouble lurking on basically every hole. When I have good numbers and good clubs, try and attack.”

Despite the sound gameplan, Scheffler will be feeling the pressure of matching the King himself as he looks for the three-peat, but with two wins and a T7 in four starts at the WM Phoenix Open, nobody would or should count him out.

Xander Schauffele Posting nothing worse than T17 to go along with a T2 and a T3 at TPC Scottsdale, it’s no wonder Xander Schauffele admitted after last year’s Wednesday pro-am that “this place has been kind to me.” The feeling seems to be mutual, as he fondly described the shot-by-shot risks and rewards of the finishing holes in detail.

“It's very much an execution finish,” he said. “Hit the fairway on 15 and a good iron, you're on the green. Then you've got 16; it's a short iron. You've got 17. If you hit a good tee ball, you can get on the green. If you pull it, you're in the water.

On 18, if you hit a good drive, you're going to have a sand wedge. If you blow it right, you're in the bunker, and all of a sudden, you're playing like an actual…”

That’s when Schauffele quickly and diplomatically switched gears, but the gist of his statement was clear. TPC Scottsdale’s final four holes either make or break championships.

After a first round 67 last year, Schauffele sat in fifth place. When asked to rank the fan experience, he said, “I'd say number one. It has to be up there. There's a few other tournaments that do a really nice job, but you can get whatever you'd like out here. There's a lot of good golfers out there. There's a lot of partying. If you're not a golf fan, you can still have fun out here.”

Fresh from a second-place finish in last season’s FedExCup, Schauffele has the confidence, skills and history to win the 2024 WM Phenix Open.

Justin Thomas Justin Thomas’ fourth place finish last year marked his fifth-consecutive Top-20 finish at the WM Phoenix Open. A hot final round 66 pushed him into the Top-10, tying for first place in greens in regulation at 16, first place in Strokes Gained for Approaches to the Green and second place in Strokes Gained Total.

If he could ever tie together a few of his low rounds, he’d be right there down the stretch. In the first round of 2019, he posted a 7-under-par 64. In the final round of 2020, he posted a 65. That’s the year he birdied four of his last six holes – while wearing a Kobe Bryant jersey.

Thomas searched for his game most of last season, finishing 71st in FedExCup rankings.

Early success at the WM Phoenix Open would change that for this season, and TPC Scottsdale would be a fitting place – for many reasons echoing through tournament history.

“It's always a fun week in Phoenix, somehow it gets crazier every year with the fans and the amount of people here,” Thomas said in 2019. “It was, I guess, a somber week. A lot of us are playing with heavy hearts. A lot of my good friends from the West Coast area are big Lakers fans, big Kobe fans, and I just kind of became a Kobe fan, just for being a fan of his and loved the way he went about everything. I have a couple Kobe jerseys, so it was a no-brainer for me to bring them and wear them on 16.”

tony finau After nearly winning the 2020 WM Phoenix Open, Tony Finau posted a solid T14 finish in 2023, and when looking at the scoring patterns of those two years, it’s a tale of two nines. In 2023 he played well on the front nine, going 6-under-par for the week without a bogey. In 2020, on the contrary, Finau took advantage of the back nine, firing a bogeyless 11-under par over four rounds.

That’s not the only thing he did well in 2020. His Driving Distance ranked 16th. Finau ranked 9th in Greens in Regulation, hitting nearly 77% of them that year. Naturally, his Strokes Gained stats shined as a consequence, ranking sixth in Approach to Green and fourth in Tee To Green – ball-striking stats which come in handy at TPC Scottsdale. What’s more, he had the putter working. Finau ranked fifth for Strokes Gained Putting.

Posting a T-20 finish for last season’s FedExCup, Finau played very well from tee to green, a part of his game which has long been established as a strength.

In overall performance stats, he ranked fifth in Strokes Gained Approach to Green, first in Approaches from 200-225 yards, and sixth in Par 5 Birdie or Better Leaders.

If Finau can put his typical ball striking with 2020-type putting, he has a great chance of winning the 2024 WM Phoenix Open.

jordan spieth Last year Jordan Spieth shot an incredible 8-under 63 in the second round to move within two strokes of the lead after 36 holes. He followed the next morning with a birdie but wasn’t able to keep the second-round momentum rolling.

“I made one on No. 1, and I thought I'm just going to continue what I started with this morning finishing the second round,” Spieth said. “Then I played 11 holes or so in 2-over with no birdies. I grabbed an extra one on 17, certainly a bonus.

Coming in with a better chance tomorrow.”

Unfortunately, Spieth wasn’t able to get anything of consequence going for the next two rounds, shooting 69 and 70. In addition to a solid T6 finish, Spieth amassed impressive stats during the 2023 championship. He ranked second in Greens in Regulation, third in proximity to the hole, second in Strokes Gained Approach to the Green and third in Strokes Gained Tee To Green.

On the heels of a 27th place finish in the season-ending FedExCup, Spieth enters the 2024 WM Phoenix Open with overall confidence as well as four Top-10s in only seven starts at “The People’s Open.” It’s only a matter of time until he hoists the crystal Thunderbird trophy.

Fowler entered the final round four strokes back, and the hole-in-one unleashed an up-and-down finish beginning with two bogeys at 8 and 9.

He managed 1-under par on the back nine to finish at -10, T10, nine strokes off the pace.

After Round 3, Fowler spoke about being back in contention after two missed cuts.

“It's really nice to be back in a similar territory. Really the last few years haven't been in this position a whole lot. But no, it never gets old.”

What changed?

“It's nothing really different,” explained Fowler. “We've been here before. So just kind of have to soak it up and have fun.”

Fowler also went on to soak up a nice $485,000 check, his fourth largest at the event, illustrating his long and successful history at the WM Phoenix Open.

“We don’t necessarily need others like it,” he said of the event after last year’s second round. “It takes a lot to get where this event has gotten and the Thunderbirds and WM and everyone involved has done a darn good job to get it here.”

With a strong 16th place FedExCup finish last season, watch for Fowler to make a move early this season at the 2024 WM Phoenix Open.

Sahith Theegala In the 2022 field by virtue of a sponsor exemption, Sahith Theegala made the best of his debut at the WM Phoenix Open, and the fans loved him from the jump! When asked about the crowd’s deference, chanting “Thee-ga-la,” he said, “It was really cool.

The last three holes I got so much support, 16, 17 and even 18, cheering my name.

It means a lot. That's awesome they feel like I'm somebody they can root for. Yeah, it means a lot to me, and hopefully I can keep being someone that they can root for.”

Theegala leaped into a two-stroke lead that year after a second round 64, and the 24-year-old, 318th in the world at the time nearly pulled it off. The following year, he gave it another go, mustering a solid T39 finish.

Known for moving the ball out there, Theegala also rolls the rock well. Last season he was ranked fifth for Putting Average. He ranked fifth for Putts Per Round and fourth for Putts Per Round – 4th Round. And amazingly, Theegala ranked first in Putting from 3 feet, making all – 100% – of the 878 putts he faced from that distance.

Overall, Theegala ended up in 31st place for the 2023 FedExCup. As he becomes more comfortable at TPC Scottsdale – with the fans already showing support – Theegala is certainly a player to watch.

Sam Burns After play was suspended on Friday of the 2023 WM Phoenix Open, Sam Burns returned on Saturday to polish off round 2 and get round 3 started. He caught fire, posting 7-under par for the third round.

“I think going back to yesterday, after hitting our tee shots on 13 and to get called for darkness,” Burns said following Saturday’s 64. “I kind of just texted Travis and I said, ‘I feel like, man, we're playing pretty good. Just haven't really gotten much out of the round so far. Just kind of a couple things that I did that I wasn't happy with.’ So the restart: to birdie three of my last six holes; that kind of gave me momentum going into this afternoon.”

Burns fired a final round 68, four birdies and a bogey, to finish tied for sixth place at -11, eight strokes off the pace. He placed sixth in Total Strokes Gained and ninth in Strokes Gained Around the Green.

Burns has momentum – coming in ninth place in the 2023 FedExCup – and he feels comfortable at TPC Scottsdale and the famed 16th Hole.

“It's awesome. I think for me, I look forward to it every year. It's a great atmosphere.

The fans are obviously incredible. So, yeah, it's a hole that I always look forward to.”

Hideki Matsuyama Making a bid to become the fifth player in tournament history to earn three titles, Hideki Masuyama’s game is well suited to TPC Scottsdale. He’s certainly a fine ball- striker and it shows tee-to-green on the Stadium Course. Matsuyama’s back-to-back successes in 2016 and 2017 were both driven by incredible ball striking.

In 2016, Matsuyama ranked first in Greens in Regulation at nearly 80%, including the most in the final round, 16, which helped to facilitate his playoff win over Rickie Fowler.

Matsuyama also ranked first in Strokes Gained Tee To Green. At the same time, he ranked only 29th in Strokes Gained Putting.

The following year turned out much like the last. Despite ranking 47th in Strokes Gained Putting, Matsuyama hit 80% of the greens, again, and ranked first in both Strokes Gained Approach to the Green and Tee To Green. Although he tied with Webb Simpson in Strokes Gained Total. Matsuyama pulled out the sudden-death win in the end.

An unfortunate wrist injury prevented Matsuyama from attempting the three-peat. Long since back in top form, watch out for his top-ranked ball striking to make another appearance.

Matsuyama finished last season lukewarm, by his standards, at 50th for the FedExCup. It’s likely he will start out this season with focused intent, and the WM Phoenix Open might be where he makes an early point.

Wyndham Clark The 2022-2023 PGA TOUR season for Wyndham Clark included an incredible third place finish in the FedExCup along with wins at the Wells Fargo and U.S. Open. Leading up to them, he sharpened his game with top 10s at the RMS, Valspar, Zurich and a T10 at the 2023 WM Phoenix Open.

Facing cold mornings all week, in Friday’s post-round interview, Clark mentioned the changing conditions they encountered. “We started my second round it definitely warmed up,” he said. “The ball started flying farther. The greens got firmer. It definitely got easier because it wasn't as windy. So scoring conditions were a lot different from the morning to this afternoon.”

Clark made an eagle on the par-5 third hole earlier on Friday, going 4-under for the front nine en route to a 4-under 67. What was his best shot of the day?

“The eagle putt on hole 3,” he said. “It was a 40-footer that broke a decent amount. That got me to 2-under for the day. From there I made a couple more birdies on the back. So that was my best shot.”

He scrambled well, too, all week, ranking fourth in Strokes Gained Around the Green.

Cameron Young TPC Scottsdale’s Stadium Course rewards excellent play from the tee, and few hit the driver better than Cameron Young. For the 2022-2023 season he ranked second in Driving Distance – All Drives among his peers, thanks to the sixth-ranked Clubhead Speed at just over 123 miles per hour on average. Naturally he also ranks high in Strokes Gained Off The Tee at 12th as well as fifth for Par 5 Birdie or Better Leaders. With these numbers at his disposal, it’s no wonder he came in 42 at last season’s FedExCup.

In his first WM Phoenix Open start in 2022, Young posted a strong T26 finish. The first and fourth rounds better reflected what he truly can do, while the middle rounds were a bit chaotic. viktor hovland The 2023 FedExCup Champion’s record at the WM Phoenix Open took a turn for the better last year, as Viktor Hovland made the cut for the first time in three tries. On Wednesday of the 2022 tournament he said, “You'd think it would be pretty easy. But just with how the greens are so firm and fast, it's hard to get close to the pins. Even if you hit a good shot and it rolls out to 40 feet, it's even hard just to two-putt it. I think ball striking is going to be very important. If you can drive it well out here, you can really set up some birdie looks, but if not, you're going to be grinding all day.”

Hovland “can drive it well out there,” at fifth in Total Driving and eighth in Strokes Gained Off The Tee for 2023. He ranks third in both Approaches from 150-175 yards and Putting from 15-20 feet, and he goes for the green nearly 75% of the time. All this adds fuel to the fire on TPC Scottsdale’s finishing holes.

Hovland has been around enough to get a taste of the atmosphere at the 16th hole. When asked about it, he said, “It's an event like no other. I wouldn't really say it's a good thing if everyone tries to create the 16th hole. Each event has some uniqueness. That's a better recipe than just trying to recreate the 16th at WM Phoenix Open.”

Tom Kim After captivating the golf world with wins at the Wyndham Championship and Shriners Children’s Open, Tom Kim brought his big smile to the WM Phoenix Open last year for the first time. In the interview room late on Friday, he admitted to “not really feeling 100%,” but he was finally “getting in a groove and finding something during the tournament. It's definitely a way better ball-striking day than yesterday.”

Kim shot 5-under 66 for the second round to move into a tie for ninth place after 36 holes. Unfortunately, he followed with a pair of 73’s en route to a T-50 finish.

As a bucket-list event, the WM Phoenix Open attracts patrons from all over the world. This past year, however, brought at least one fan from slightly further away. In an interstellar twist, a self-identified extraterrestrial visitor left the 2023 tournament scratching its head (or whatever the equivalent is in its species) and questioning the very essence of golf.

Trrr, Ruler of the Planet Omicron Persei 6 – the name and title the visitor gave to the slightly bewildered press – had journeyed light years to watch a golf tournament after hearing about the game’s serene and refined nature from old radio waves traveling through space. After landing, Trrr found himself amidst a sea of high-fiving, adult-beverage-enjoying, and cheer-chanting humans at TPC Scottsdale.

"In our study of Earth customs, we understood golf to be a quiet, contemplative activity," Trrr communicated through a series of beeps into a Google universal translator. "This event is more akin to what you call an ‘epic party’ with a sprinkle of polite clapping. I certainly didn’t expect this."

Regular attendees and golf aficionados attempted to explain the unique nature of the WM Phoenix Open to the extraterrestrial visitor with little success.

"I don’t know what he expected, but this is ‘The People’s Open,’ chief. It ain’t tea time with Grandma," said one helpful fan. “I tried to tell him the John Deere Classic is more his speed.”

WM Phoenix open As title sponsor of the ’Greenest Show on Grass’ through 2030, WM is committed to educating and raising awareness of environmental issues and sustainability, sharing solutions on how to live more sustainably and reducing impacts on the environment.

And they say time flies when you’re having fun! 2024 marks WM’s 15th year as title sponsor of the Phoenix Open. Over the last decade and (nearly) a half, WM and The Thunderbirds, the WM Phoenix Open’s tournament host, have accomplished some pretty remarkable things for communities around Arizona, and for the environment.

Here’s a look at new initiatives being introduced this year, as well as what’s been achieved so far.

New For 2024

This year, WM and The Thunderbirds are further advancing the tournament’s dual missions of extraordinary charitable giving and leadership in sustainability with the new WM Phoenix Open Working For Tomorrow FundSM, which supports communities right here in Arizona. The 2024 beneficiaries of the WM Phoenix Open Working For Tomorrow FundSM will include water restoration projects, renewable energy initiatives on Tribal Nations, and efforts to eliminate food waste and address hunger.

Attendees can help raise money for the WM Phoenix Open Working For Tomorrow FundSM by simply wearing green on Saturday, the

tournament’s annual Green Out Day. For every person who wears green to the 3rd round, $1 will be donated to the fund. In addition, attendees can also play the new 50/50 raffle in the WM Green Scene, located in the Fan Zone. The winner will receive 50% of the raffle pot, and the other 50% will be donated to the fund.

Charitable Impact

Since WM became title sponsor in 2010, the tournament has raised more than $124 million for local charities, including $14.5 million raised from the 2023 tournament. In the tournament’s 88-year history, The Thunderbirds have raised more than $190 million for Arizona charities.

Zero Waste

Soon after becoming the title sponsor in 2010, WM imagined an event where nothing is wasted. By 2013, one of the world’s largest attended golf tournaments was a zero-waste event with all materials either recycled, composted, donated, reused or used to recover energy and create fuel. Eleven years later, the WM Phoenix Open is one of the world’s largest certified Zero-Waste sporting events. The tournament is one example of what WM is doing to help customers and other sporting events and venues reduce their environmental impact.

Feeding The Hungry

In 2016, WM began working with M Culinary, a catering and hospitality service provider, on a program to recover unused food from the WM Phoenix Open and donate it to Waste Not, an Arizona-based non-profit providing 2.5 million meals annually.

Since the program’s inception, M Culinary and other tournament food vendors have donated 161,580 pounds of food from the tournament.

Limiting Impacts On The Environment

WM offsets greenhouse gas emission associated with the WM Phoenix Open by purchasing carbon credits equivalent to Scope 1 greenhouse gas emissions as well as a portion of Scope 3 emissions, such as player travel. The tournament also purchases 100 percent renewable electricity from Arizona Public Service to help power the tournament. In addition, WM recovers water from melting ice from the bars in high-traffic hospitality venues to be reused in portable toilets during the tournament.

And, to reduce the use of single-use bottles, fans can refill their water containers free of charge at the WM Green Scene in the Fan Zone.

Water Restoration

WM and The Thunderbirds join with Change the Course (CtC), a water stewardship initiative, to leverage the tournament’s influence and the power of sports to drive awareness around water conservation and to directly restore water to Arizona rivers and communities. Now in its ninth year, the WM Phoenix Open and CtC supporters have helped restore more than 400 million gallons of fresh water to Arizona ecosystems and communities.

GEO Certified & PGA TOUR Approved

The 2017 WM Phoenix Open was the first GEO Certified PGA TOUR event and has been awarded GEO certification each year since (totaling seven times). The Scotland-based GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf is dedicated to inspiring, supporting and recognizing sustainability in and through golf around the world.

In addition, WM and the WM Phoenix Open have been awarded “Best Title Sponsor Integration” by the PGA TOUR a record five times (2011, 2013, 2014-15, 2016-17, 2022-23) – more than any other tournament throughout the last 15 years.

The splendid par-71, 7,216-yard Jay Morrish/Tom Weiskopfdesigned Stadium Course serves as host of the WM Phoenix Open.

When the tournament is not in play, golfers can experience “a day in the life” of a PGA TOUR professional by testing their skills on the same immaculately manicured layout. Green parcels of turf weave through a rugged tapestry of Saguaro cacti and other natural features, with 72 deep bunkers and twisting greens creating a beautiful challenge.

The City of Scottsdale completed an extensive renovation of TPC Scottsdale's Stadium Course and clubhouse in 2014. Led by the original and famed architect, Tom Weiskopf, the project included the relocation of five greens, resurfacing of all greens, reshaping and regrassing of tee complexes, relocation and reshaping of bunker complexes, replacement of cart paths, and re-landscaping of desert areas. Several holes look completely new from their original design. The result is a course that's more aesthetically pleasing to resort guests and strategically more challenging to PGA TOUR players during the WM Phoenix Open.

The Champions Course, a Randy Heckenkemper design, offers a true desert golf experience. Recognized as one of the top courses in the area, the Champions Course boasts more than 7,100 yards of undulating fairways, pristine greens and challenging bunkers.

Considered a “hidden gem” by locals, the par-71 course features five par 3s and a diverse variety of par 4s and par 5s, creating a thrill for golfers of all skill levels. Soon after opening, the course hosted the first stage of Q-School for the PGA TOUR and the final stage of Q-School for the PGA TOUR Champions in 2009 and has since hosted six more PGA TOUR Champions Q-Schools.

15 Usually the make-or-break point down the stretch, the odd thing about last year and the very getable, par-5, 15th hole is that nobody near the top of the leaderboard took advantage of it. The eventual champion, Scottie Scheffler, and runner-up, Nick Taylor, both made pars on all four days. Jon Rahm, who came in third, made an eagle in the second round but parred the rest.

Likewise, long-hitting Jason Day made four-straight pars, and at T6, Sungjae Im played the hole best. He went eagle, birdie, birdie and par, 4-under par for the tournament. Tyrrell Hatton made an eagle in the final round to finish the back nine at 3-under, but he still finished 8 strokes off the pace set by Scheffler.

16 For the third year in a row, the 16th hole will once again be the only golf hole on TOUR to host a concert, (see page 56). The Coliseum’s rock-star personality has not only been putting professional golfers under the spotlight for decades, but now stars from the entertainment world also run the risk of getting booed if they “miss the green.”

On the 11 occasions when there was a hole-in-one, it’s bedlam. None louder than Tiger’s 1997 ace. Although that might be hard to beat, the roar of the crowd on the Saturday before the 2023 tournament might just top the decibel level of the “hole-in-one heard around the world.”

17 As intended by Jay Morrish and the late Tom Weiskopf, this drivable par 4 is usually the scene of dramatic circumstances. It’s not the hardest of holes, ranking 16th in 2023, but in 2012 Kyle Stanley barely escaped a prickly fate to prevail. In 2016, it delayed Rickie Fowlers quest for his eventual 2019 WM Phoenix Open championship. In 2021, Brooks Koepka left no doubt after pitching in from a dreadful angle. And the biggest moment came in 2001 when Andrew Magee made a hole in one from 332 yards. As for Scottie Scheffler who made birdie there all four days en route to his second championship: “Yeah, I’ve never laid up on 17.”

18 Scottie Scheffler’s Cinderella 2022 season began at the WM Phoenix Open, more precisely, the 18th hole.

That’s where he matched Patrick Cantlay two times in a playoff before draining a birdie putt on the third playoff hole for his first PGA TOUR victory. Similarly, in 2020, Webb Simpson took the championship with two-straight birdies on 18 to top Tony Finau. In 2008, J.B. Holmes pulled even with Phil Mickelson on the 72nd hole, before uncorking another huge drive that led to the winning birdie. Last year, Scheffler didn’t need No. 18 to clinch the tournament. Instead, he all but wrapped it up with a par save at 16 and birdie at 17. With a two-shot lead, his wayward drive on the 72nd hole was more of a formality than a threat.

Hoyt Jr. Family Foundation Dream Day The game of golf is rooted in life lessons like respect, courtesy, honesty, and integrity and can be an incredible teaching platform for lasting values both on and off the golf course. The R.S. Hoyt Jr. Family Foundation Dream Day provides the setting and opportunity for just that. Each year, more than 500 students from throughout the Valley take a field trip to the TPC Scottsdale Champions Course practice area for an unforgettable day full of fun activities, a junior golf clinic, and personal Q&As with some of the world’s most popular and successful athletes.

After witnessing an improbable – bordering on impossible – trick-shot golf show, a slew of special guests (past speakers include Arizona Cardinals legendary receiver Larry Fitzgerald, Arizona Diamondback starting pitcher Zac Gallen and a few PGA TOUR stars) speak to the group about their experience in sports and some of the lessons they learned along the way.

The floor is open to students, and they are encouraged to ask questions which provides a truly special personal connection to some of their favorite athletes.

Dream Day is often students’ first glimpse into the world of golf, but each year leaves a lasting impression on hundreds of potential lifelong golfers – and great people.

san tan ford special olympics putting challenge Later in the morning on Tuesday San Tan Ford hosts a Putting Challenge, bringing together Special Olympics athletes, celebrities, sports stars, business leaders, and PGA TOUR professionals to roll a few putts on the same green as the pros.

The hour-long challenge takes place on TPC Scottsdale’s Stadium course practice green. Fans are welcome to come out and watch as part of Ford Free Days to catch a lighthearted and friendly (but still competitive, just ask the Special Olympics Arizona athletes) putting contest for charity.

operation shower Tuesday also brings a very special baby shower for military wives at the WM Phoenix Open’s Patriots’ Outpost near the 18th teebox. Operation Shower was created to celebrate the expecting moms whose partners are risking their lives overseas fighting for our country’s freedom. Each mom will receive an array of unique, high-quality gift items for mothers and babies. The event draws nearly 35 military moms and moms-to-be plus their guests from local military bases and the National Guard.

pga tour wives association golf classic Rounding out Tuesday’s day of giving at “The People’s Open” is the PGA TOUR Wives Association Golf Classic, a 9-hole charity event that celebrates the philanthropic efforts of all the PGA TOUR and Korn Ferry Tour wives. This event pays tribute to the amazing woman working behind the scenes to use their blessings to give back to others that need support. Originally forming in 1987, The PGA TOUR Wives Association has been making a difference each week in various communities. n

This marks the sixth time in tournament history The Thunderbirds and the WM Phoenix Open have raised more than $10 million for charity in a single tournament. The previous record was set in 2020 ($14 million). The Thunderbirds raised $10.5 million in 2022.

Central Arizona Shelter services Founded in 1984, Central Arizona Shelter Services (CASS) is the largest and longest serving homeless emergency shelter provider in Arizona. Our adult and family shelters operate at full capacity, 365 days of the year. In 2024, we will open up a 170-bed senior hotel shelter (the Haven) to serve the highly vulnerable and growing aging adult population. CASS provides shelter, case management and housing support to a truly vulnerable community, from around the state and beyond.

Last fiscal year, we served 6,902 unduplicated individuals and housed 1,587 directly through our internal housing programs.

Thanks to a recent grant from Thunderbirds Charities, CASS Family Shelter was able to renovate its Welcome Center! CASS Family Shelter is a 30-unit converted apartment complex that provides families experiencing homelessness with emergency and transitional shelter, case management, and supportive services that shelters on average 120 family members nightly. The new Thunderbirds Charities Welcome Center serves as a crucial entry point for families seeking refuge and support and thanks to The Thunderbirds’ support now provides a warm, friendly and inviting space for children and families to take the first steps towards ending their homelessness. Positive Coaching Alliance Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) provides research-based training and resources for coaches, parents, athletes, and leaders to ensure a positive youth development experience for ALL kids, in all communities across the U.S., through sports. TECHIE CAMPS AND TECHIE LABS EDUCATING OUR FUTURE TECHIES Arizona Students Recycling Used Technology (AZ StRUT) was founded in 1997 by Intel and Motorola to address the growing problem of electronics waste. AZ StRUT has collected an average of 400 tons of electronics waste in each of the last three years, keeping the landfill free of toxic waste.

After sorting and selecting equipment that can have another life, AZ StRUT refurbishes and distributes renewed computers and other electronics. Over the past 23 years, they have provided over 100,000 refurbished computers to Arizona schools, non-profits and individuals. AZ StRUT uses a circular economy model to keep valuable technology resources in use.

Techie Camps and Techie Labs facilitate hardware learning and distribute refurbished computers to Title I students and families in a meaningful, hands-on approach. Many students and low-income families get their first home computer from AZ StRUT and learn how to troubleshoot and maintain it.

In 2024 we expect to support 4,000 students on the path to STEM careers in Arizona to build the diversity and strength of our workforce. AZ StRUT is grateful for Thunderbird Charities’ critical support at a time when the digital divide has become another barrier to equity in education and daily life.

Feeding matters Feeding Matters is revolutionizing the lives of Arizona families facing the agonizing reality of pediatric feeding disorder (PFD). Imagine your infant or toddler struggling with every meal, choking, gagging, and vomiting, leading to malnutrition. You try to get help, but often it is hard to find it and you feel alone. Feeding Matters, founded in 2006 by Shannon Goldwater, emerged as a lifeline for thousands of families, providing the support, education, and comfort they desperately needed. Feeding Matters goes beyond advocacy, offering programs that empower parents through family support and educational workshops, and access to providers.

With a generous grant from Thunderbirds Charities, we were able to intensify efforts to reach unreached or underserved Arizona children and families. The initiative prioritized early screening and identification of PFD, ensuring equitable access to resources and supporting families as they navigate complex care systems for their children. The generous grant has been instrumental in positively impacting the health outcomes of Arizona children with PFD, turning the tide for struggling families. We were able to support over 71 families in Arizona and reach 7,400+ families in Arizona online and through presentations in the community. Join us in making a difference with @feedingmatters.

Elaine’s Mission Elaine's mission is to connect Arizona's homeless and underserved populations to critical resources by eliminating transportation barriers. Elaine serves homeless, elderly, disabled, low-income, and other vulnerable people age 18+ in the Valley in response to an urgent community need for transportation to locations essential to the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH). Eligible services/locations include: healthcare appointments, housing, food access, employment opportunities and many other critical errands. Without Elaine, individuals needing services not covered by Medicare/Medicaid or other traditional funding sources may have no other free, reliable and compassionate alternative for getting to healthcare and social services that are available to them.

Thanks to the generosity of Thunderbirds Charities, Elaine was able to provide 1,000 rides to 347 individuals. Among other outcomes, we confirmed that 13 of those individuals gained stable employment and another five were able to transition out of homelessness into a home of their own because of a ride from Elaine! Support from Thunderbirds Charities in the early stages of our organization has been instrumental in allowing us to build the foundation for what we believe will one day be a program that helps people all over the country. Fresh Start Women’s Foundation Founded in 1992, Fresh Start Women’s Foundation has served more than 50,000 women. Our mission is to provide access and resources that help women achieve self-sufficiency and use their strength to thrive. Through the Impact Program, we offer comprehensive services including workshops, support groups, one-onone coaching sessions, workforce training programs, and more, focusing on five key areas of women’s lives that are most important to achieving and maintaining self-sufficiency: Family Stability, Health & Well-being, Financial Management, Education & Training, and Careers.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of Thunderbirds Charities, hundreds of women can gain access to life-changing services at Fresh Start’s Family Law Support Center. These services include certified legal document preparation, one-on-one case assessments, educational workshops on legal matters, access to an on-site virtual courtroom, pro-bono attorney referrals, and information and assistance to help women understand Arizona’s Family Court system and laws.

Nearly 62 percent of the women Fresh Start serves are single mothers, and 59 percent have an income of less than $25K per year. The Thunderbirds Charities Family Law Support Program is available as a critical resource to help women advocate for themselves and their children in family court. Together, Fresh Start and Thunderbirds Charities are empowering Arizona women and their families to build a brighter future.

valleywise health Valleywise Health, Arizona's only public teaching healthcare system, serves Arizona's most critical healthcare needs, compassionately serving the underserved, and teaching tomorrow's healthcare professionals. It also serves the Southwest region with its world-renowned Arizona Burn Center. Treating some of the most complex and traumatic burn and wound cases, Valleywise Health is one of the nation’s largest and busiest academic burn centers with approximately 6,000 outpatient visits and more than 1,000 inpatient admissions each year. The new 75,000 square-foot Arizona Burn Center will be a state-of-the-art facility, the epitome of excellence in burn care. Taking care of burn patients is complicated and resource intensive. The goal is for our patients to not only survive their burns, but to thrive in their recovery. With modern and progressive facilities, our care team will be able to treat burn patients both acutely in the hospital and long-term, as survivors continuing their recovery. Through the generosity of Thunderbirds Charities, the new Thunderbirds Charities Pediatric Burn Unit within the Halle Arizona Burn Center- Valleywise Health will be a safe space for children to heal, work through the trauma associated with their injuries, and get back to being a kid. Xico Xico is one of the oldest ethnic arts organizations in the United States and a leading organization advancing culture, artists, and community. In the spring of 2023, Thunderbirds Charities generously approved a grant in the amount of $10,000 to Xico for the “Say Yes to the Press (SYP)” youth arts program. The Thunderbirds Charities funding pays for staff time, travel, materials, and resources for students.

SYP specifically serves tweens and teens attending Title I schools and youth served by community organizations with a mission to provide after-school and summer programming to at-risk youth. Partnering and collaborating with other organizations allows Xico to build relationships with community members to engage students. In addition, partnerships allow for sharing and leveraging resources to further support community needs.

Xico provides opportunities to engage in various types of visual art. However, its specialty is printmaking, which requires an etching press. The organization is dedicated to art forms that speak to both communities and culture.

Historically, printmaking is one of the most significant means of artistic expression for Latino and Indigenous communities.

“Say Yes to the Press” was named for its unique feature, a mobile printmaking program. Printmaking is an artistic discipline not offered through any other mobile engagement program in Arizona. In addition to printmaking, the curriculum for SYP includes painting, drawing, sculpture, and recycled art.

Founded in 1975, Xico is a leading organization promoting Latino and Indigenous culture through art and community engagement. THE HEARTBEAT OF ANY SUCCESSFUL EVENT often lies in the dedication and passion of its volunteers, and the WM Phoenix Open is no exception.

This iconic golf tournament, known for its electrifying atmosphere and charitable initiatives, owes much of its success to the tireless efforts of a dedicated army of volunteers. Among them is Frank Kohler, a seasoned volunteer whose commitment to the tournament spans 33 years. Here we catch a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes action that transforms the tournament into a seamless and unforgettable experience.

We gained some cool insights into the invaluable contributions of volunteers, top memories being inside the ropes, the camaraderie that fuels their spirit, and the impact they make on both the tournament and the community it serves.

Here’s what Frank has to say about his time as a volunteer for “The Greatest Show on Grass”.

How long have you been a volunteer?

I have been a volunteer involved with golf for more than 33 years and have volunteered at numerous events including the WM Phoenix Open, the LPGA, the AJGA, ASU Women’s Golf and the Schwab Cup.

What makes the WM Phoenix Open different from other volunteer opportunities?

The WM Phoenix Open is one of the world’s largest sporting events and it's magical to be a part of such a successful tournament year after year.

I am honored to be able to contribute to its success.

Have you met a lot of PGA TOUR pros or celebs from your time as a volunteer?

I don’t get to meet a lot of players or celebrities while working as Gallery Chair and other volunteer positions. Volunteers remain pretty busy behind the scenes at most tournaments.

What keeps you coming back to volunteer?

I have returned each year to enjoy the tournament and continue to meet a lot of interesting people and see it all come together through the efforts of the volunteers.

What is the best part about volunteering at the WM Phoenix Open?

It is just a very fun and active tournament with tons of people. Lots of action, rarely a dull moment and a pleasure to be a part of.

What different roles have you taken part in?

I have most recently been a marshal at the Open after serving as a Marshal volunteer, Hole Captain, Front nine supervisor, then Marshal Chair for the past 15 years.

Wildest moment as a volunteer at the tournament?

Wildest moments are usually during a playoff when crowds are surging, volunteers getting placed, and the final putt drops. It gets pretty hectic but it’s still important to do our job and make sure everything goes as it should and everyone remains safe.

What is your favorite memory as a volunteer at the WM Phoenix Open?

My most fond memory is simply being a part of the Open. Working to allow all the pieces of the puzzle to come together and produce a successful tournament. Simple thanks from the volunteers and The Thunderbirds mean a lot as many hours are put into the scheduling months before the actual event. Having the Tournament Chairman and Executive Director personally thank me for my efforts means a lot.

Has volunteering led to any lifelong friendships? Is volunteering a great way to meet a lot of like-minded people with an interest in golf?

I have made long lasting friendships with many people, some who I have volunteered with for 15-20 years, and we keep in touch throughout the year. Volunteering is a great way to meet people who have similar interests. It's also very interesting to learn about other people's backgrounds, experiences, and lives.

Why should people volunteer at the WM Phoenix Open?

People should volunteer to give back to the community through their volunteer support and love of golf. Make a contribution through the donation of your time in volunteering. Get out, meet new people, and enjoy the experience.

I would urge everyone to volunteer as it will create long lasting friendships and possibly business relationships, and make a contribution to their community and the game of golf. Take the time and opportunity to get involved. n

Remembering an american Icon SANDRA DAY O’CONNOR

Sandra Day O'Connor's career is a testament to her trailblazing spirit and legal acumen. Appointed in 1981

by President Ronald Reagan, she made history as the first woman to serve on the United States Supreme Court, a position she held with distinction until her retirement in 2006.

Before her Supreme Court appointment, O'Connor's career was marked by a series of groundbreaking achievements. After graduating third in her class from Stanford Law School in 1952, she encountered gender-based barriers in the legal field. Undeterred, she served as a deputy county attorney in San Mateo, California, and then embarked on a career in public service in Arizona. She broke new ground in Arizona's state government, serving as the first woman Majority Leader in the state senate and later as a judge on the Arizona Court of Appeals.

Her tenure on the Supreme Court was characterized by a pragmatic approach to law and a commitment to moderation. O'Connor often found herself as the swing vote in critical decisions, her centrist views and legal pragmatism shaping significant rulings. Her judicial philosophy reflected a unique blend of conservatism and an openness to individual rights, setting a precedent for future justices.

O'Connor's influence extended beyond the bench. Her commitment to civic education and engagement, particularly after her retirement, underscored her belief in the importance of understanding and participating in the democratic process. Her establishment of the Sandra Day O'Connor Institute and her authorship of several books further contributed to her legacy as a jurist deeply invested in the fabric of American society.

In recognition for not only her incredible career in law, but also for her commitment to the State of Arizona and the communities it serves, Sandra Day O’Connor was named an honorary Thunderbird in 2014.

O’Connor passed away December 1, 2023 at the age of 93 due to complications related to advanced dementia.

She will be forever remembered as an American Icon and a fiercely independent defender of the rule of law.
