FUEL PASSION WITH CREATIVITY.

Our feelings or passions are stemmed from inspiration and fuelled creativity. There is no single reaction or feeling exclusively favorable for innovation. The real secret is in how we utilize the good and bad events towards creativity.

Your passion is the fuel of life. It should be propelled with consistency and persistence. Sometimes, people put their passions on hold or leave it behind. You do not have to neglect it; you just have to refuel it. Passionate people tend to use their momentum to be motivated regardless if they will be happy or won’t be satis ed. This desire and commitment will allow individuals to maintain long-term goals. They are no strangers to setbacks or frustrations because levels of stress are part of creative work. Passion is complex and it is anchored with intensity which goes beyond feelings, work ful llment and engagement.

Rediscover that desire and fuel it by nding out what made you passionate about your passion. Go back to the

beginning and remember why it all started. Discover your why to help you nd what motivated you which will get you back in the game. Next, master and manage your emotions. Being responsible for your emotional state plays a vital role to refuel your passion.

Then, feed your soul and mind. To keep your creative juices owing, read books, watch movies, and get inspiration from other people, things or other places. Be consistent and patient. You have to commit and have patience. This will keep you driven and help you in the long run. Do what you love instead of forcing yourself to do something you do not like. Embrace the journey to keep your spirits high. To fuel your passion: Play your strengths, improve weaknesses, use your gi s and talents, and above all, celebrate your successes – both big and small.

Look good, feel great!

In-depth features approaching the scope of life decisions, importance of wellness, diversity and career perspectives. Exclusive interviews with the best in the business –from world-class public figures to influential faces.

CSM: The last couple of years were labeled as a rollercoaster ride full of twists and probably surprises. How did you show your resiliency?

JENN: I guess I’m lucky that I like roller coasters? But even if I didn’t, we don’t really have a choice at what life throws our way, only how we respond to it.

CSM: What’s the best course of action to take in the face of uncertainty?

JENN: Take deep breaths. Recognize the feelings you’re having and acknowledge them.

Then pass out like a possum or a fainting goat. Maybe when you wake up, things will be slightly better.

CSM: Professionally speaking, how can you exude being decisive?

JENN: I wonder if I do exude being decisive? I think when I want to project confidence or decisiveness I use a lower register in my voice and don’t end my sentences with an upward inflection like a question?

CSM: What comeback goals do you want to achieve in 2022?

JENN: I want to drink less diet soda but who knows if this is possible. I’m a sucker for the bubbles. I also want to book more work, do more volunteering, and visit a bat sanctuary where I can hopefully talk someone into letting me hold a real bat.

CSM: Define confidence and being sexy.

JENN: I feel like everyone always says that just being yourself and comfortable with that is the sexiest, but I think our moments of real joy are the sexiest. Someone really laughing or making me laugh is my biggest turn on.

CSM: How do you standout in a fast-paced and competitive industry?

JENN: Wear more hats and less pants.

CSM: Career-wise, how can someone be a good influence to others?

JENN: I think that the best way to be a good influence is by example. My mama used to say, “Your walk talks, and your talk talks, but your walk talks more than your talk talks.” Which is a southern way of saying, “Actions speak louder than words.”

Fuel your passion and jumpstart your mindset with this guide to working smart to own the year 2022: all the street-smart competence and practical knowledge you need to take your life and career to rev up your creative thinking.
Take deep breaths. Recognize the feelings you’re having and acknowledge them...”

CSM: What do you think is the role of food or nutrition in healthy living?

JENN: What is on our plate says a lot about how we feel about ourselves. That’s assuming that you can afford enough food to live. But I believe that no foods are inherently good or bad and that learning how to trust what your body needs is imperative.

CSM: How do you maintain your consistency of weight or shape?

JENN: I don’t. My weight and shape fluctuate and always will because I’m a person. The important part is to learn to react with compassion about it. You can be happy and healthy at many weights and shapes.

CSM: What fitness goals do you want to attain?

JENN: I want to be able to hold crow pose in yoga and build my upper body strength. I want to dance more. I want to continue to never weigh myself because I think the scale is a trap. It’s

just a measure of how much you’re stuck to the earth. It’s a measure of gravity.

CSM: What exercises do you consider fundamental?

JENN: I try to move everyday whether it’s walking, running, yoga or anything really getting my heart rate up and stretching helps me live in my body and not just from the neck up. Just taking a walk can help me so much with my anxiety.

CSM: When you’re stressed, how do you manage it?

JENN: I get so sleepy. I immediately want to curl up and take a nap. Sometimes I do. But if I can’t, I’ll make a list and try and prioritize what really needs attention.

CSM: Explain why mental health matters in the digital age.

JENN: Mental health matters in any age but now I think we understand that how our brains work and the way we view the world, the hidden beliefs we operate from are so important to explore.

CSM: Do you think mental and physical health are connected?

JENN: Absolutely. And the science bears this out as well. Your brain is an organ and is a part of your body. Our thoughts, our nervous systems-it’s all connected.

CSM: What advice do you have for those looking to achieve their fitness goals?

JENN: I’m not a fitness professional. Maybe consistency is a good answer? Maybe explore why it’s important to you and connect with that?

CSM: What stereotypes should people break when it comes to physical and mental health?

JENN: That therapy is for crazy people. Therapy should be mandatory. We need a space to talk and have someone help us with how we connect to the world.

The important part is to learn to react with compassion about it. You can be happy and healthy at many weights and shapes.
AND AROUND HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

JENN LYON

Talks about diversity, TNT’s Claws, acting and film

CSM: Explain what diversity, equity, and inclusion mean to you and why they’re important.

JENN: DEI means to me that all kinds of people get equal access to resources and aren’t at a disadvantage because of race, sex, age, size, religion or being differently abled.

CSM: Is there a challenging aspect of working in a diverse environment?

JENN: The only part that’s challenging is being afraid to get it wrong. Or being embarrassed by learning. What if we were curious instead? About others and ourselves in relation to them. And what if we assume the best about each other and forgive ourselves and each other if we get it wrong sometimes?

CSM: What is your approach to understanding the perspectives of colleagues from different backgrounds?

JENN: I try to listen without an agenda. I try to make my mind open to what they are saying and what their body language is as opposed to thinking of what I’m going to say next. I’m not always successful.

COVER STORY

CSM: How would you handle a situation where someone is being culturally insensitive, sexist, racist, or homophobic?

JENN: Run away screaming? It really depends on what my role is there and what the environment is and what’s happening. I might be on the train in NYC and someone is yelling some sexist nonsense but it’s clearly someone who isn’t in their right mind, so I let it go. If I’m working on a production and someone starts behaving in a way that I find offensive or that is hurting someone else, I would assess the situation and follow the appropriate chain of command and report it, while making sure that the victim of said incident knows that they are safe and supported. If it’s some kind of social gathering, I would probably “accidentally” spill 2 drinks and a plate of food onto the aggressor and say, “I’m so sorry. Your outlandish views on race make food and drinks fly right out of my hands and onto your shirt.”

CSM: What are your thoughts on brands or companies who don’t understand the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion?

CSM: Filming this upcoming season of Claws may have underwent some setbacks due to the pandemic, production delays and strict restrictions on-set. How did you manage to cope with this situation and what was your experience like?

JENN: We experienced all of those setbacks, but we were just so grateful to get to go back to work that we managed just fine. We laugh through everything together.

CSM: How would you describe Claws’ Jennifer Husser in this groundbreaking television show?

JENN: Jennifer Husser is rough and ready. She is a recovering addict, a mama, a wife, a fantastic nail tech and a loyal friend. She is funny, fierce, complicated and loves big hair.

CSM: What preparations and training did you undergo to prepare you for the show?

JENN: I went to 12 step meetings and learned about AA and I also went to nail school to learn how to do nails!

Jenn Lyon stars in hit TNT series Claws as Jennifer Husser and the North Carolina-born star is also a writer, producer, and co-founder of internet sketch group POYKPAC that have been written for and been seen on MTV and CNN.

JENN: They are behind the times and I hope they catch up.

CSM: How do you advocate for diversity and inclusion?

JENN: You talk about it. You ask questions.

CSM: Describe an ideal brand that has a sense of inclusion, belonging, and equity on a daily basis?

JENN: Fenty, Universal Standard, Ursa Major, ModCloth, Buttah Skin, Rizzo’s Curls

CSM: What steps can someone take to eliminate bias from other brands or companies?

JENN: Start a letter writing campaign? Put your money where your ideals are? I don’t know how to make a private company do what I want, only how to express myself to them.

CSM: This is the fourth and final season of TNT’s Claws, what can the audience expect from this anticipated show and how is it different from the previous seasons?

JENN: I’m not allowed to give any spoilers but let’s just say it’s explosive!

CSM: The pandemic really changed the game and impacted the entertainment or film industry. As an actor, what are your thoughts on streaming releases of films from studios? Do you think movies should be only released theatrically or simultaneously with on-demand streaming services?

JENN: It depends on the film and the wishes of the directors/producers and the agreements in place. Some movies were meant to be seen on the big screen and some are fine on the small screen.

CSM: What upcoming or ongoing projects are you currently working on?

JENN: I’m currently shooting a new pilot for HBO and I’m writing some new things as well but the ongoing project I’m always working on is advocating for comprehensive reproductive rights and trying to touch a real bat.

CSM: If the universe is listening, what film or TV projects do you want to get involved with?

JENN: I don’t think it is because if it was we could erase poverty and hunger but, in terms of the business, I would love to be involved with anything Aaron Sorkin, Janicza Bravo, Jordan Peele, Paul Downs, Rob McElhenney, Mike White, Tina Fey, Mike Flannigan, and/or Mindy Kaling.

.... all kinds of people get equal access to resources and aren’t at a disadvantage because of race, sex, age, size, religion or being differently abled.”

IN-DEPTH CONNECTION AND PERSONALITY

CSM: The last couple of years were labeled as a rollercoaster ride with full of twists and probably surprises. How did you show your resiliency?

No matter what life throws at you, you must keep moving because it doesn’t stand still for anyone. Having constant goals set to work towards, as well as a good support network ensures you are always pushing for success while ensuring you have the love and support from those you trust most.

CSM: What’s the best course of action to take in the face of uncertainty?

In the face of uncertainty, it’s vital not to make any rash decisions, take time to process what has happened and seek advice from those you trust. Always trust your gut and formulate the right questions to get the answers you need.

CSM: Professionally speaking, how can you exude being decisive?

Being positive and optimistic about your goals and missions is important; you attract what you put out into the world so it’s imperative to keep your thought process fresh and confident, as this will help in those decisive moments. Never make any decision based off emotion, take time to consider your options - pause and assess.

CSM: What comeback goals do you want to achieve in 2022?

My comeback goals of 2022 are to striding through new challenges and pushing my boundaries. Getting comfortable in those uncomfortable situations is a big factor for me, you grow and improve in those uncomfortable situations which is key for self-development. Another big area in my life, I want to continue to succeed in is my training and nutrition, look after your body and it will look after you.

CSM: Define confidence and being sexy. I believe confidence is being comfortable in your own skin and accepting every perfection and flaw you have. Owning your traits and who you are is sexy, there is only one of you so get out there and show them.

CSM: How do you standout in a fast-paced and competitive industry?

The modelling industry is so quick and competitive it can be difficult to stand out from the crowd, but being your own unique self is the key. Try new styles, new locations, collaborate with new people! This helps you again step out of that comfort zone and grow.

CSM: Career-wise, how can someone be a good influence to others?

Leading by example is key to influencing others, it one thing to talk about the influential things you want to do with your life, it’s another thing to take those words and put them into actions. If you talk the talk, you must walk the walk. Using your time wisely and putting in that hard work is the best place to start, nothing bad can come from working hard!

CSM: What vital lessons can you share to young people? Surround yourself with like-minded people who really care about you and your goals. Having people that understand you and accept you for you are the foundations to success. Be confident in yourself and what you know is right for you.

ON FITNESS TRAINING AND HEALTHY LIFESTYLE:

CSM: What do you think is the role of food or nutrition in healthy living? Nutrition is a vital part to healthy living. Having a nutritional and balanced diet is not only important physically, but mentally. You need to fuel your body with high quality food to maintain a positive mood and wellbeing which is an important requirement to reach the high goals you set for yourself.

CSM: How can you maintain your consistency of weight or shape? Tracking your food is the secret to maintaining physique and shape. Training hard to work towards your fitness goals, alongside tracking what you eat will get you where you want to be. Be determined, visualize your success and be consistent – Rome wasn’t built in a day.

CSM: What fitness goals do you want to attain?

My fitness goals for 2022 are to continue to build my dream physique with the help of my personal trainer where we constantly assess my nutritional needs to make sure we are on track to increase muscle mass while putting in valuable hours in at the gym.

CSM: What exercises do you consider fundamental? Core and body weight exercises are fundamental to any workout. Having a strong core helps stabilize and protect your big muscle groups which lowers chances of injury, where body weight exercises allow you to build muscle strength, balance, and flexibility.

CSM: What gym etiquette that people must follow?

Respecting personal space is a big one for me. Gyms get crowded, especially during the first few months of the year but you should still try to respect everyone’s personal space, we don’t want to make anyone uncomfortable. Also, it goes without saying but put your equipment back!

CSM: When you’re stressed, how do you manage it?

Recognizing your mental state and that you are stressed is the first tasks if you don’t understand your emotions and how you are feeling you can never begin to deal with it. I personally tend to take some alone time to reflect on the situation I am feeling, taking part in hobbies I enjoy such as the gym or football allows me to turn my attention elsewhere so I can destress and reflect.

CSM: Expound why mental health matters in the digital age. I feel like with the rise of social media, mental health is very important; as we as human beings tend to compare ourselves to others. Positive role models in the social media space are so important to remind us that social media is not real life, and that you are perfect just the way you are.

CSM: Simplify if mental and physical health are connected or not.

Mental health and physical health go hand in hand, if one of these suffers the other will too. Looking after yourself by exercising, eating well, and cutting out any bad habits will help improve your physical and mental health.

CSM: In achieving fitness goals, what do people should remember?

Setting achievable and realistic goals is the first step; settings unrealistic goals you will never reach will have a detrimental effect to your motivation. Set small achievable goals, work hard, smash them out the park and the rest will follow.

CSM: What stereotypes should people break when it comes to physical and mental health? I believe it’s okay not to be okay, and to reach out for help and support when struggling – don’t suffer in silence.

MATTY MARSHALL

ON DIVERSITY, INCLUSIVITY & EQUITY

CSM: What is the most challenging aspect of working in a diverse environment?

The most challenging aspect of a diverse working environment is accepting and embracing all the differences that come with it. It can be difficult simply just trying to fit, speaking up or feeling valued but conducts yourself in the right way you can overcome these challenges.

Being a good listener is extremely important. Being able to digest someone else’s point of view and put yourself in their shoes really helps you see things from a different perspective.

Education will give a strong starting point to help understand why this is important in all walks of life. This will help increase awareness and encourage others to speak out.

As a football player myself, we have always advocated from anyone from any walk of life to come a game of football with friends. This helps break down those barriers through sport and a game we all love.

CSM: Describe an ideal brand that

has a sense of inclusion, belonging, and equity on a daily basis?

Maharishi does a great job of inclusion and diversity, where it always uses a diverse selection of models for its runways and collections in terms of age and ethnicity.

CSM: What steps will you take to eliminate bias from other brands or companies?

Modernizing my approach to brands and companies is a keyway I use to help eliminate bias - using new and creative ways to connect with people and get my work out there.

Education will give a strong starting point to help understand why this is important ... increase awareness and encourage others to speak out. ”
