It Must Not Hoppen Agoin

THE one thing that emerges clearly from the r muddled situation of a dock strike that ties up the entire Pacific Coast for weeks on end is that some equitable way must be found to ensure that it doesn't happen again.

The right of labor to go on strike to force management to bargain in good faith is strongly entrenched in both our customs and our law. No one seriously questions this, up to a point. But we think that point has been long passed.

The cost of the Pacific coast dock strike at this writing is being put at $100 million in losses. Are we really supposed to believe the greater good of society is served by allowing one group, any group, the power to put an economic stranglehold on a major region of this country?

This isn't a question of whether the unions involved are justified in their claims. Some of their contentions certainly deserve fair consideration. At this point the greater good of the community at large and by extension, all of us as individuals, must receive the consideration deserved. There is no justification for a strike that

has created this amount of economic havoc when the unions involved are basically hassling over which one will perform the work and how much money they will receive for not working so that nrembers can have a guaranteed annual income.

Over the years there have been a number of solutions proposed in an effort to eliminate this kind of economic disruption while still preserving, in some cases, the rights of the participants in a dispute. They range all the way from strike breaking with federal troops to complete acquiessence to worker demands. The two types most currently in favor are compulsory arbitration and exercise of the Taft-Hartley Act in cases where a national emergenc)'. is created or threatened by the strike.

The methods to end costly tie'ups such as the dock strike of l9?l must surely be found and soon. Continuation of any situation that disrupts our economy as severely as this has cannot be allowed. Most any set of circumstances must eventually be weighed on the scale of public goo'd versus individual or group gain and if found wanting, should be ended long before the current level of damage is reached.

Ililerchandising hardwoods at the retail level

A S " modern lumber and building A materials dealer. Southern Lumber Co. sells all the usual things, hardware, paints, tools and the normal complement of fir, pine, redwood, plywood and all the rest.

But the thing probably closest to the heart of owner Edwin W'. "Ed" Pohle in the store is the extensive inventory of hardwoods.

He's no newcomer to an appreciation of hardwoods. A forester by education, he has studied exotic woods durins qraduate studies at the Uniu.rsiiJ if California. travelled Central America in years gone by and worked in New Orleans with the largest {oreign trader in lumber in those days.

Yet despite his background of a half century of exposure to lumber, he observes that "every sale of a small piece of rare wood and the re-

ceipt of every shipment of hardwoods fgives mel a kid's pleasure with a box of Cracker Jacks." He adds, with masterful understatement. "It is much difierent than that of sellins soft' woods."

Story dl d Glqnce

This retailer generates customer enthusiasm for hardwoods by getting across the fact they share their interest store's Wood Museum is a big draw firm even provides a workbench and tools for customers.

The San Jose, Calif., store has a special hardwood room, 5,000 sq. ft. of prime display space exhibiting 64 species of domestic and imported hardwoods. As their listings in the Yellow Pages put it, A Wood Hunt-

ers' Parailise. The hardwoods are kept on display, not in inventory and have a valuation in excess of $50,000. They range from small carving blocks to timbers.

Blocks and slabs of woods are displayed on modern gondolas, topped with two color signs telling what is displayed. The wood is piece priced and identified as to specie.

Making it easy {or the customer is a constant cause at Southern Lumber. Their ads have Sylvester, their cartoon figure logo, saying, 'oW'here lumber is priced so you can see the cost-not guess. Courteous and helpful employees to serve you or you can pick out your lumber yourself." A small point perhaps, but that kind of customer service can bring in someone who otherwise might be re-

to display his or her ignor-

The firm maintains a workshop for the customers and has supplied it with saws, miter boxes, clamps, rules and other tools.

The store has a W-ood Museum, started by Ed Pohle and continued by his son Bruce, the manager, that is without counterpart in the West. An enormous redwood burl at the en. trance (see accompanying pictures) is a foretaste of the unusual and beautiful in wood that has been coi. lected by the Pohle family. There is even a carving of the company mascot Sylvester, adding a light touch to the beautiful carvings and statues displayed.

The company has been in operation since 1904 and has'been owned

by Pohle since 1939. The phrase "Lumberteria", incidentally, was coined by Ed Pohle and is a registered service mark owned by Southern Lumber Co. It reflects, we feel, the tirm's ability to think from the customer's side and of Southern's touch of reaching out and interesting the customer and involving him by projecting their own enthusiasm for what they sell.

Pohle doesn't think hardwoods alone eould. ever be profitable in the retail trade without being carried part way by other bade. In counseling others on'othe pleasures, the profit and the pitfalls of handling even a few of the many species of hardwoods." he strikes a note of caution,

He rvonders aloud as to horv many other dealers there are in the retail Iumber buslness that are emotionally equipped. He doesn't want to make selling hardwoods look too easy and thus cause someone to "fall. flat on their pocketbook."

He thinks they have been fortunate in having an exceptional location and that customers with an unusually high earning capacity have been an integral part of their !'uccess. That is undoubtedly true, but so is the fact that theirs is a firm that has found that an important part of their merchandising efforts has been the ability to. relate the romance and beauty of wood and transmit their own enthusiasm for it.

Exotic hardwood's high mark-up

nNE of the most overlooked profit v potentials for lumber and building materials dealers is the wide array of exotic hardwoods available. They command a higher price and provide a much better mark-up than most items in the store.

Exotic hardwood also has a natural appeal because of its unusual appearance, the unique efiects which can be achieved, the interesting names and country of origin. They can be used for carvings, picture frameso shelves, cabinets, tables, lanps, walls, screens, gun stocks, bows, boats, mounting plaques and in hundreds of other ways.

One of the obvious concerns for the dealer is how to stock these woods since there are over 75 different species. Availability is also more than a passing problem. Lack of knowledge by store personnel is perhaps the biggest deterrent to doing an effective job of merchandising exotic hardwoods.

Many dealers have overcome these obstacles by obtaining the services of exotic hardwoods specialists who know which items can be worked bv

the consumer, the most popular species and the ones which are readily available.

One wholesale distributor who has made an all-out efiort to put the lumber and building materials dealer in the exotic hardwoods business is Penberthy Lumber Co. of Los Angeles.

Sfory aI q Glsnce

An examination of varying price mark-ups on exotic hardwoods and how they can exceed those on some domestic species . supplier's merchandising backup can play a vital role.

Penberthy maintains a hardwoods inventory of over 7 million feet. They have their own kilns to closely control the dying of each species and a complete planing mill to produce any detail desired. The company has developed a balanced inventory approach for dealers which provides for fast turn over. Seven different species are included in the package with sev-

eral of the most convenient sizes.

These species include shedua, teak, Indian rosewood, goncalo alvez, Indian laurel, angico and louro preto. This gives the customers a wide selection of pattern and color along with various price ranges. Several of these species can actually be purchased for less than American walnut in comparable grades.

For example, shedu which is a substitute for walnut, can be purchased for approximately $0.67 per foot and retailed for $1.37, while walnut in premium grade costs $1.40 and re' tails for approximately $2.00. Teak can be purchased for $1.20 and easily sold at $2.00-$2.25 per foot. Indian rosewood has a cost of $2.00 and re' tails for approximately $3.75.

In addition to providing a conven' ient stocking program, Penberthy sup' plies literature on each species which shows the wood in full color and out' lines its characteristies.

The firm also conducts seminar programs on exotic hardwoods for dealer personnel, architects, decora' tors, builders, and other trades. Among those dealers who are utiliz' ing the Penberthy program, several report that the rate of return Per square foot of space required for exotic hardwoods is among the high' est for any item in the store.

EI0TIG hard*oods require special handling to assure the correct 'moisture content fot workability and to eliminate warping and checkins.'Penberthy's balanced dealer inventories ire supplieit dry, in various widths, lengths and ihicknesses and surfaced four sides.

Every paneling item, including the molding, adhesives, and nails is clearly marked with a price, so the customer can easily work within his budget.

The stores reach the consumer through a well-organized advertising campaign. Almost all advertising is built around a single theme and is presented to the consumer through colorful store displays, radio spots, newspaper advertising and direct mail pieces.

How can Evans retail stores offer so great a selection of paneling? l'irst of all, Evans is the free world's largest importer of unfinished hardwood plywood and operates eight 26,800 ton bulk vessels. Sell the versatility

\/ERSATILITY is one of the most V important assets ol wood as an interior building product. The Bruce divisions of Cook Industries, Inc.. are recognized leaders in hardwood .llooring and plywood paneling. Emphasis on wood's versatility is an important element in selling consumers with changing attitudes and life styles. Bruce recognizcs the advantage of hardrvoods, which are summarized in tht. followine statement Irom " V ersat ile H a rdwoorl Plwuond,'' a publication of the Hardwood Plywood Manufacturers Association.

Xlade by nature, lashioned by man) each hardwood, plyuood, panel i.s a unique carneo ol beauty. Ol different mood; and greins, lmrdwood plywood can present an a,ura ol dignity or an air of ntsticity which uill last lor the lile ol the installation.

Hardwood flooring is no longer a "commodity" building material, such as 2x4"s and sheetrock, which most builders once considered it to be. Rather, it has become a design material like paneling, wall paper, bathroom tile and decorative ceiline tile.

While fewel builders ale using hardwood flooring throughout rheii houses, there is a definite trend toward using high-style specialty wood flooring in two or three rooms for emphasis as a design element. The very strong demand for plank flooring is an example of this trend. Interior designers, who have become bored with wall-to-wall carpeting or any one flooring material through-

out the entire living area of a house, have been one o{ the principal groups

Hardwood flooring should be sold as a high margin specialty item, rather than as a commodity item by the carload, counsels Dr. Mcleary. hardwood's ability to be formal or casual gives it great saleability.

causing this trend toward specialty hardwood floorins.

As the numbei of manufacturers' designs, patterns and finish colors expands, stocking distributors will be necded to give the kind of selection and service required in all Iocales. Distributors who recoenize the trend toward merchandisine hardwood flooring as a high maigin specialty item rather than as a "commodity" item by the carload, the way unfinished strip flooring was sold twenty years ago, will be most actively involved in flooring merchandising in the years to come.

In the future many more floor contractors and builders will be buying the high-style specialty floors from the distributor. In line with recent trends, Bruce's sales efiorts are now being directed toward designers and architects in behal{ of dealers and distributors instead of toward dealers and distributors themselves. This approach will result in more sales for us all. S'e are trying to pull the product through the marketing pro. cess rather than pushing it through.

New hardwood club growing

OST good ideas, like starting a club to help you learn more about your part of the industry and the people in it, never get much be' yond the second martini talking stage.

Fortunately for western hardwoodmen, five far sighted lumbermen chipped in $50 each and formed the Los Angeles Hardwood Lumbermen's Club nearly two years ago and have brought it along to where there are now about 30 members.

Founders Ken Tinckler, Stahl Lumber Co.; Bob King and Jerry Lapin, Mercury Hardwood; Bob Sheratt, R. E. Sheratt Co.; and Jack Havens, Lane-Stanton Lumber, had in mind a forum in which members could get to know everyone in the business, ex' change information and problems and coordinate hardwood promotion. Their progress-toward those goals

has been undeniable, if intangible' Members now hail from Memphis, Tenn., to San Francisco. Bill Mac' Beath, MacBeath Hardwood, San Francisco, a club member, recentlY reprised B.y Area labor develoP' ments at a monthly meeting, a good example of information exchange that benefits all.

, As membership, and hence the treasury, builds, the club hopes to sponsor a National Hardwood Lum' ber Assn. hardwood grading school candidate.

Prospective joiners must gain l$OVa acceptance from present mem' bers to become members. "We don't need anyone making static, we're not strong enough for that yet," notes Ken Tinckler. "W'e don't want the club torn down before it eets built rrp."

Trend to "mixed cars" continues

Nikkel Lumber. shelter products div. of DiGiorgio Corp." is continu' ing an extended expansion program aimed at providing better customer setvice. according to Neil Hagen, millwork sales manager.

Sincr: their merger with Dant Fo' rest Products in 1968. the firm has acquired The Cal-Ida Lumber Co. of Auburn. Calif.. and Southwest Frame and \{illwork of El Paso, Texas.

"Our long-range plan," according to Hagen, "is to give our distributors immediate loading of stock moulding and millwork items in any combination of our four species: Ponderosa pine, Philippine mahogany, Douglas fir and/or white fir. By combining our facilities with those of Dant, for example, it became possible to ship mixed cars of moulding, inside door jambs and exterior frames, either solid or fin-

gerjointed, from a total of eight processing plants in northern California and ldaho. The addition of Cal-Ida gave us an additional production capacity of over 2-million board feet per month. That represents approximately 40 rail cars per month which increased our total monthly capacity to approximately 200 carloads. All of this production is backed up by the five DiGiorgio sawmills, making it possible for the plants to operate at maximum, even when lumber is in short supply.

o'There's a continuing trend in the business toward the mixed car," Hagen said. "The major goal of our expansion is to facilitate this growing portion of our business. Our customers are interested in turning their inventory, and keeping it to a minimum. Because of our plant acquisitions and the trend toward plant specialization, we are now in the best position ever to provide the mixed car service".

Sierro Pocific Merges, Exponds

Sierra Pacific Industries has recently merged with Gyro-Tex of Franklin Park. Ill., and Jacksonville, Florida, according to John Weaver, Jr., gen. manager of southern California operations for Sibrra Pacific Industries, Ontario.

Gyro - Tex is a manufacturer of vinyl covered paneling and moulding and Sierra Pacific will sell to mobile home manufacturers and retail do-it-yourself centers. With this merger Arnold Smith, with some 35 years in lumber, millwork and retail trade, has been named southern California area rep.

Sierra Pacific Industries has also purchased Gage Products, Anaheim, Calif. Gage supplies cabinets and passageway doors for mobile homes. Jim Gage continues as operating manager.

Other changes are 3 Stan Mago in charge of the pre-cut operation; Mil' dred Martin is now a full time ac' countant; Jerry Rocklin will supervise the bagged products div.; Arlin Beal moves from the bi-product div. to lumber sales and will assist in stud sales from the Inyokern facility which is currently producing 5.5 million feet per month or 82 studs per minute.

Hqrdwood Wholesoler Growing

The opening of a new hardwood yard represents a major step forward for both the four year old Swaner Hardwood Co. and its founder, Keith Swaner.

Stocked with 2r/z million feet of hardwood, and stafied by a crew of thirteen, it is a long way from the small office in which the firm started. By the end of the first year, the firm had added Charles Jordan to its fledgling sales force and John W. Kirby as credit manager. Belore long they were joined by Michael Murphy, specializing in plywoods. A number of trucks have been added over the years, pickups, one and two ton, to make sure they could give customers the best kind of service.

0nthe ball'r

Before starting his own company, Keith Swaner gained valuable experience working for E. L. Bruce Co. and the now-defunct Angelus Hardwood. "Chuck" Jordan had also worked for Angelus as had John Kirby who had been credit manager at Angelus and at E. L. Bruce for 20 years.

With the tremendous Open House to celelirate the open. ing of their Burbank Iacility last month, Swaner Hardwood saluted its past accomplishments and began the first step for continued ftrture growth.

Construction Contrqcts Up

New construction contracts throughout the nation posted another gain in August, maintaining the upward trend of the Dodge Index;. it is reported by F. W. Dodge div., McGraw-Hill Information Systems Co.

A total of $7,711,530,000 in contracts {or future construction in August raised the seasonally-adjusted Dodge Index to I53 from July's l5l. It reflected a substantial improvement over the depressed conditions of a year ago, when the Index registered 135.

o'The rate of growth of construction contracting slowed during the past few months, after a period of especially rapid expansion which began in the summer oI 1920,,, points out George A. Christie, vp..and chief economist of F. ![. Dodge.

"Housing and electric utilities, the two categories which have been running strongest all through 1921, still dominated construction statistics in August," he said. Nonresidential building, however, which has been gradually recovering from its sharp decline during last year,s recession, suffered a setback in Aueust.

Through the regional Office of Emergency Preparedness, the'Wash-

(1) With the thousands of items inventoried and special-ordered, outlying dealers have found it impossible to keep up with rapidly escalating supplier prices, especially in forest products.

(2) Businesses and communities will suffer if dealers are forced to discontinue the sale of these items when replacement costs equal or exceed fmzen ceilings.

We are requesting the right to ap- ply historical margins to the frozen ceiling prices of suppliers.

II/ORD has been received that the vt Department of Labor. charged with administration of the new Oecupational Safety and Health Act, he.s removed our segtrtent of the industry from the Target Industry Program.

The ruling cites "lumber and other building material dealers, or establishments engaged primarily in selling to building contractors or the general public a general line of building materials" as being classified as retail trade and, therefore, not ineluded in the so-called worst-first group.

"Such establishrnents will be cove;:i'd by our program for general inclustry compliance visits which will include selected firms in the retail tlade industry." Thus, while we no longer belong to a "worst first" group, the necessity for compliance is unchanged and the probability of compliance inspeetions is undiminished. Henee, our members now have the advantage of being forewarned and forearmed. The all-inclusive nature of the act and its ultimate application to all employers in all fields does not permit any relaxation of compliance actions. Appreciation must be expressed to MBMDA members for patience and

cooperation on heavier - than - usual mailings, surveys and questionnaires. All mernbers have been provided with pertinent information on OSHA rules, regulations and requirements. WagePrice Freeze information was supplied as quiekly and extensively as possible. Surveys on credit-card utilization and benefits will assist in determining an association service, A questionnaire on combined convention - expositions will assist in reaching a consensus, And, as anticipated, the response and coop3ration was furnished primarily by those members who can regularly be depended upon for assistance.

Recent personnal changes involve installation of Cordell Stern as manager for Aldrich & Co., Bridger, and Willis Fife as manager of Harding Lumber Co., Hardin. Troy and Don French have purchased Saunders Lumber, Hardin, and will operate as French's Building Materials. Because of a health problem, Al Hium is retiring as manag:er of Aldrich & Co., Bridger. He has our best wishes.

first five months of 1969. The vacancy ratio, the percentage of housing units vacant,. has remained very low; indicating a continued demand for more housing.

f, T the association's first quarter fI board of directors meeting in Flagstafr, August 27-28, Dt. Ted Hoff of NAU reviewed the association's 2nd annual Cost of Doing Business survey for the 1970 year of operations. Remarkable increases showed up in sales over 1969 with an increase of 31%. Net pre tax income increased M%.

The building industry experienced substantial growth in Arizona in 1970 as building permits issued in the state show a 17.6/o inerease in dollar valuation over the 1969 total. Part of this increase is due to inflation, but discounting the inflationary growth, real

growth will still be about I2Vo, Construction employment grew approximately 10% witt. much of this increase realized in the residential construction sector. In the Phoenix area there was an increa,se of 77o in housing starts, while in Tucson, the increase was 28.7%.

The increase in construction in 19?0 seems to be carried along into 1971. While no detailed statistics are available, the Arizona Busiwss bulletin carries two regular series; (1) Maricopa County Building Permits, and (2) Maricopa County New Housing Starts. These series show that building permits issued for the first five months of 1971 are up 327o ovet one year ago. New housing starts have increased even more, up 50Vo over the number started during the

Population growth contributes heavily to new housing demand. PoPulation growth in Arizona is comprised of two major parts; job seekers and retired people. Growth in housing demand on the part of job seekers will be closely related to the economic growth of the state. Demand for housing on the part of retired people' however, is independent of the state's economic growth, but does contribute to it. Indicators of economic growth continue to be positive.

Fmm all indications after checking with dealers, they are experiencing for 1971 the largest sales volume in their history.

All Arizona association members have received a copy of the 1970 Cost of Doing Business Survey and should carefully study it to make comparisons of their operation with similar operations in their sales volume category.

SOME INTERESTING DEVELOPMENTS

A NEW CONCEPT IN MILL CAPABILITIES AND HOW THIS AFFECTS YOU.

Our Klamath Falls, Oregon plant has been producing Ponderosa Pine lumber since 1928, with California, the Southwest and the Northwest taking a hefty portion of the production. The reason . . . the favorable shipping rates to these areas. A hardboard operation added in 1955 was the first product diversification at this mill.

Then, last year things began to happen, based on the concept that mills with favorable freight rates to specific geographic areas should serve these areas with a diversified product line. This concept is now being put into practice at Klamath Falls. You benefit and so do we.

WHAT TWENTY.FOUR MILLION DOLLARS WILL BUY THESE DAYS.

A plywood plant has just begun production with a threeshift annual capacity of 90 million square feet measured on a 3/8" basis. Production will be heavy to exterior sheathing. Also starting production is the Versabord particleboard operation. Used primarily as floor underlayment, a specific grade will also be manufactured for mobile home decking.

Timblend flakeboard, widely used for cabinetry, is also rolling off the production line. A cut-to-size operation in conjunction enables us to now better serve our customers.

WHAT THIS MEANS TO YOU.

Now, most of you within the circulation of this magazine, can order a variety of products from the Klamath Falls mill with its extremely favorable freight rate - - Ponderosa Pine lumber, Fir .Dimension, conventional hardboard, hardboard siding, Muralwood grain print paneling, Versabord underlayment, mobile home decking, door core, Timblend flakeboard in panels or cut-to-size.

Our new mill capabilities at Klamath Falls have been made with you in mind. We hope you will take advantage of them.
