New hardwood club growing
OST good ideas, like starting a club to help you learn more about your part of the industry and the people in it, never get much be' yond the second martini talking stage.
Fortunately for western hardwoodmen, five far sighted lumbermen chipped in $50 each and formed the Los Angeles Hardwood Lumbermen's Club nearly two years ago and have brought it along to where there are now about 30 members.
Founders Ken Tinckler, Stahl Lumber Co.; Bob King and Jerry Lapin, Mercury Hardwood; Bob Sheratt, R. E. Sheratt Co.; and Jack Havens, Lane-Stanton Lumber, had in mind a forum in which members could get to know everyone in the business, ex' change information and problems and coordinate hardwood promotion. Their progress-toward those goals has been undeniable, if intangible' Members now hail from Memphis, Tenn., to San Francisco. Bill Mac' Beath, MacBeath Hardwood, San Francisco, a club member, recentlY reprised B.y Area labor develoP' ments at a monthly meeting, a good example of information exchange that benefits all.
, As membership, and hence the treasury, builds, the club hopes to sponsor a National Hardwood Lum' ber Assn. hardwood grading school candidate.
Prospective joiners must gain l$OVa acceptance from present mem' bers to become members. "We don't need anyone making static, we're not strong enough for that yet," notes Ken Tinckler. "W'e don't want the club torn down before it eets built rrp."
