Ecology ond lhe Deoler

TgfITH all the current excitement involving W ecology and the environment in which we all live, or try io, it is good to see an organization of Iumber and building materials dealers who are taking the nation's current interest in the issue and are turning it to their own advantage.

The Western Building Material Association at their Seattle convention unveiled the slogan ooEn' vironment Begins at Home." Wisely, they have decided to utilize it over the next three years, not just for one year. We think it is neatly designed to tie in their member's business into the hottest cur' rent topic in t}le nation.

The recent ecology marches, Earth Day celebrations and the politician's verbiage on the general subject insures a continuingly closer look at how and in what we live. It's what t]le late President John F. Kennedy used to call the quality of life.

The issue cannot help but have beneficial fallout for the alert lumber and building materials dealer. As interest and money and time are concentrated on solving the problems of polluted air and water, the general cleaning up of our environment, our cities, schools and homes, will follow as a natural by-product of the major pollution clean-ups. The process is already in motion. We think it cannot help but grow.

There seems to be a long-term historical tide of opinion that thinks all men should enjoy their world more fully than they have in the past. Their

thinking has undoubtedly been gaining either rncreased credence, or is it just publicity, the last few years. Whichever it is doesn't concern us here' Whai is immediate to our concern is the fact that people are more interested in home improvement now, than at any recent time.

We are seeing a phenomenon where fixing up and improving the home is changing from some' thing that was a kind oI nagging duty to many, to something that is now a desirable, sought after goal. In a time when the lumber and building ma' ierials dealer had many times lost consumer dol' lars to travel, new cars and boats, a shift to empha' size the quality of the home may signal a major shi{t in the spending, of the consumer's disposable income. If this is so, it means a major marketing opportunity for the alert retailer.

This being National Home Improvement Month, we hope first steps can be made to strongly tie in the lumber and building materials dealer with the still growing enthusiasm for repairing our dis' heveled environment.

We hope that anyone with plans in this direc' tion takes steps to act soon, If the present interest in the entire environment question is like so many national enthusiasms, its major thrust will sharply drop off in terms of the quantity of attention given it by the general public. This being so, the wise merchant will act swiftly so that his efforts can get the longest ride on the current wave of interest and publicity.

Kimberly-Clark customers get top dollar for K-C lumber because it's straight faced... (hardly a chuckle in a carload) and more often than not, exceeds grade standards. Then, mix with fast service, easy-to-handle packaging, and genuine interest in his problems. At Kimberly-Clark every shop employee has been trained to work at quality control. lt's the best way to protect that precious asset. a satisfied customer. lf keeping our lumber straight faced keeps you laughing all the way to the bank, that's the way our 750 inspectors will keep it.

tTtu Atr-scrENCE of merchandising" bt" I ing even more imperfect than those that practice it, is subject to shifts, fads. changes and occasional bursts of nonsense. Despite all the vagaries, there seent to be certain merchandising rules that only gain stature with the passage of time.

Fourteen years ago, The Xlerchant Mag' azine headlined its story on Carter Mill & Lumber Co., "Customer Service is Carter's Number One Product." A recent talk with Morris B. "Nick" Carter, president and general manager of the yard, con' firmed that he sees no reason to change a good thing.

Making every employee a salesman is another vintage rule of good merchandising that is very much in evidence around the yard. A recent visitor to the yard was politely asked by four different stafiers if there was something they could help hinr with; all within ten minutes of his arrival.

"It is necessary," Carter says, "to have people working for you that are interested in your business, We also have a profitsharing plan for our kev employces."

Classic sales technique

Recause of location, their marketing sit' uation is an unusual one and thel' have wisely been flexible enough to not oniv cope with it, but to profit from it.

How to start a home improvement program in your town

f\ITIES throughout the U. S. are observv irg this month as Home Improvement Montl. The observance is a national effort by the Home Improvement Time Advisory Committee, made up of trade associations and suppliers of products and materials used in remodeling. Highlighting the observance will be a new "Headquarters City" program sparked by leading associations and manufacturers in the cities in which they are headquartered.

Purpose of Home Improvement Time is to lead the nation to improve its homes and communities through coordination of activities by the public, local governments, lumber and building materials dealers, the press, local and national supplierg remodelers, builders and lenders.

Tlr" 616 billion remodeling industry is expcc-ed to benefit through expanded markets and greater community and public awareness of the benefits of improved homes.

Seattle, Wash. with the formation of the Western Washington Home Improvement Coordinating Committee, made up of local businessmen, and sponsored by Simpson Timber Co., was the first headquarters city to get underway.

Douglas Loth, of Simpson Timber, is serving as area coordinator for Seattle, Tacoma and Portland as well as chairman of the Seattle-Tacoma activity. The Seattle Master Builders Assn. is among the groups participating.

Among the Headquarters City Programs announched in the West in addition to Seattle, are those at Denver, Colo,, sponsored by the Association of Remodeling Contractors; and San Diego, Calif., sponsored by San Diego Chapter, National Home Improvement Council.

Sfory dt d Glonce

How to set up a Headquarter City program so you can profit from home improvement business 12 months a year. Seattle, Denver and San Diego are western cities with plans already in motion.

Under the program, a typical looal Headquarters City steering committee would consist of: the regional building material dealers association executive officers and building material dealers; local builder association executive officers and builders" officials of utilities, banks, savings and loan associations, H.LT. sponsoring manufacturers, officials of local remodeling contractor associations and remodeling contractors, members of allied building products associations and local government representatives.

Any organization may initiate formation of a local Headquarters City committee. To assist in organizing such an activity, Gerald P. Mullins of Formica Corp. Cincinnati, national Headquarters City chairmano has prepared a comprehensive manual that de-

scribes the activity step-by-step. The manual contains suggested invitation letters to specific groups as well as publicity and advertising plans.

"The materials are availableo" Mullins said. 'obut thev must be obtained and activated locally.' Local leadership and communications are available in many cities through the associations and manufacturers supporting the Home Improvement Time Program. The objective is to make the Home Improvement Month promotion operative and effective at the local level by placing management and coordination of the promotion in the hands of participating manufacturers and associations supporting the program."

"Through them the cities in which they are headquartered can be assured of a successful Home Improvement Month promotion. Why should these participating manufacturers and associations assume the burden of local leadership? Simply because they are best qualified to do so, and for these reasons:

( I ) Each association and manufacturer in his headquarter city has available or is stafied with professional advertising, public relations and promotion personnel.

(2) Local coordination by professional communications personnel will assure maximum exposure in local media-both paid and unpaid. The local impact achieved in a number of cities will result in increased business for everyone.

flnn manager of a fast-growing building

r products supply store believes an effective manufacturer marketing program is almost foolproof insurance to increase store sales, but unfortunately too many such programs lack the necessary oostuf' to intrigue customers into increased purchases,

Roger Lane, youthful manager of the San Diego branch of l2-store Sunset Builders Supply, made the statement just after turning over a large share of the store's remodeled display area to merchandising aids for Weslock Company's 1970 marketing program for its complete line of interior and exterior residential doorlocks.

"If it will help us sell, we want it," Lane said of such sales projects. "If it wonot, we don't.

"It's our job to try to forecast beforehand what the results will be."

So {ar Lane has done pretty well at his forecasting, for annual gross sales of the outlet have increased approximately 25 percent since he became manager in April of 1969.

And they figure to continue to rise, for a facelift has just been completed on the 3,000-sq. ft. display area that should encourage customers to buy more. Included in the remodeling was the addition of electrical and plumbing supplies to the existline of doors, milled lumber products and builders hardware.

A further st€p toward increased sales is about to be taken with a major expansion of the l0,000-sq. ft. building including

the newly modernized display

Both Lane and Sunset Builders Supply appear well on the onward-and-upward road. The chain is part of Sunset Industries, Inc., which started as a single hardware store in Los Angeles in I9I7, went public in 1961 and since then has grown to include 12 retail stores in soutlern California and Arizonao and subsidiaries that produce aluminum doors and windows, wood doors, steel doors, trusses, shower and bathtub enclosures and lighting fix.

tures. In addition, the company boasts a profitable mail order business covering tle 1I western states plus Alaska and Hawaii and {eaturing a 2l6-page catalogue with 300,000 circulation.

This retailer knows it is "beauty is as beauty does" when it comes to all merchandising goodies manufacturers so eagerly push forward. Results are vital in his expansion plans.

The combined corporation added up to $14.5 million 1969 sales, a 49 percent increase over 1968 sales of $9.7 million despite a severe drop in the price of lumber and plywood. Although a substantial part of the increase was due to two acquisitions, double-aggressive merchandising played an important role as in past years.

As for Lane, he went to work part-time in tfre store's warehouse in 1962 while attending San Diego State College. After graduating, he became purchasing agent for the San Diego outlet for two years, was transferred to the Santa Ana branch as assistant manager and became manager in 1966. He was transferred back to San Diego last year as store manager.

Since then the outlet has had a steady in. crease in sales through the aforementioned aggressive marketing programs and eyeappealing display areas plus high ratings by the store's salesmen for courtesy and in-depth knowledge of the outlet's 2,000plus products and how they work.

Knowing the ins and outs of every item is achieved by regular product knowl. edge meetings at which supplier represen. tative talk to the store staff alout the sup. plier's products, including manufacturing, selling, servicing and other points that help a siilesman do his iob.

For example, \illeslock Company's field sales representative, Phil Scott, not only provides information to the store staff on Weslock products, but he also talks informally with Lane and the salesmen to (Continunil on Page 41)

HUI{DRIDS of backYards in almost any dealer's trade territory can be transformed as this one was by adding a wood deck and some einy-care borda plantings. Deck is much coolef in summer than was old slab it now covers. Doug fir 2x4s on edge give strong lines, good shadow patterns. A dealer sold all the materials.

Hit the deck for more sales

rFO STEP UP sales of materials for r decks, why not build one yourself, and let your customers see what a deck is likehow it looks, how it's built, and how it feels.

The idea's the same as fixing up a full' scale kitchen corner. A real deck also can be a strong sales aid. One can be built on the parking lot, where it's sure to attract attention.

Nothing rinkydink will do, however. The deck must be large enough for actual use, handsome enough to make the sale.

A 16-foot-square built in B-foot-square modules would be ideal. It's also a good idea to expose the framing of one of the modules, so that construction can be easily studied.

One plan calls for Douglas {ir 2x4 strinsers and deck boards. But 2x6s can be usedJor the stringers. Deck boards can be laid flat, or on edge to produce the slimlined look of fine flooring.

Be sure to space deck boards no more than one-fourth inch apart. One-eighth inch spacing is better.

Don't paint the deck. In a real garden, fir or cedar deck boards should be allowed to weather naturally, with a clear water repellent applied to help hasten the process. You, of course, won't have time to wait for weathering, so cheat a bit and use a

coat of semi-transparent driftwood stain, or gray-tinted water repellent.

Accessories are essential. Furnish the deck with a round table and four chairs, choosing something high-styled and not the type with plastic webbing over an aluminum tube frame. If there's space, add a handsome chaise longue and a side table.

Slory qt a Glqnce

Store builtdecking samPles decked out with furniture, Plants and how-to brochures build material sales when customers see and feel real decking.

You'll need plenty of plant materials to make the deck garden-like, but all can be in containers. A local nurseryman may be happy to supply plants in exchange for a small advertising plaque.

You'll need tall, flufiy greens wherever lhere are harsh lineswhere the deck butts against the yard's outside wall, for example, and around the base, where plants soften the junction between deck and parking lot surface.

Instead of a railing, use low plenters along the deck's edge, but not in a straight

line. Vary designs and sizes of the plant containers. Lhe nursery can advise you on the best plant materials for this situation. Generally, evergreens are a good choice' And that literature for the display should include three items that Western Wood Products Assn. furnishes free: t'Decks." ttPatios." and tt3 Do-It-Yourself Decks." The first two are full-color idea booklets. These may be ordered in quantity from WWPA Dept. P, Yeon BIdg., Port' land, Ore. 97204. You'll be billed only for the freight, they tell us.

A LL TOO often in the past, the training 13. o1 new employees and the re'training of present employees has been hampered or ev"n stymied by the lack of qualified people with the ability to successfully im' part their knowledge to others. Usually, the men who knew their subject couldn't teach it and good teachers were restricted by lack oI product or subject knowledge.-

A major step in redressing this problem has come about by the use of video tape equipment. By using these recorders, it is

possible for the first time to get good ieae, hers and then get the message to thou' sands of people, rather than hundreds.

The Western Building Material Associa' tion has been particularly active in utiliz' ing this new business technique. Beginning last fall and continuing thru tle Winter quarter at Green River Community Cgl; lege, they started fihning the classes held there on product information, end use and sales techniques.

The association lined up industry ex'

perts to pxesent their material and ex-pe-ri' ence to students at the Auburn, Wash.' school. Among the firms that supplied ex' perts for the teaching/tape sessions are b*ets Corning Fiberglas, Weyerhaeuser, U. S. Plywood, P. H. Bowman, Johns Man' ville, Simpson Timber, Fentron Industries, Boise Catcade and several of the forest products associations.

(l) Presentation of the tapes at the Learning Resource Center at WBMA's new headquarters in Olympia.

(21 Duplicating tapes and distributing them thru the community colleges and high schools; dealers might this way be able to tie in with the school presentations'

Robert E. Canton, president of National-American Wholesale Lumber Association, emphasized the benefits of intra-industry relations to 145 WWPA and NAWLA lumbermen at a champagne breakfast held during the Western Wood Products Association's annual meeting in San Francisco.

Canton stated that, while champagne was felt by some to be a reflection of market conditions in early 1969, the present business activity clearly did not justify this image in 1970. 'oThe producermarketer relationship is vital regardless to the Ievel of the market."

Briefly he developed the thoughts behind the National-American intra-industry relations program which has been growing over the past several years. He said, 'olt is NAWLA's belief that, if we provide increased opportunities for dialogue between the producer and marketer of forest products, both segments of the industry will benefit."

Armstrong Zops TV Ads

Network television is no longer a suitable medium for many national advertisers, according to Craig W. Moofie, vp. for ad' vertising at Armstrong Cork Co.

"There is nothing wrong with the medium," Moodie s a i d, "what is wrong is the way it is being used."

Due primarily to Pablum programing millions of Americans are tuning out tv, Moodie charged, particularly those from higher income homes. Exiting on the heels of the viewers are the adver' tisers who seek to reach these well-educated dropouts.

After 20 years of continuous television sponsorship, Armstrong has dropped network tv and placed its entire national advertising schedule in magazines. Armstrong's campaign will fill more than 300 full-color pages making the company one of the nation's largest users of magazine advertising.

In I9zlO he started Carter Lumber Co. at 4O0 High St. in Oakland. For the rest of that decade it was the only stock pile

yard for the government in the East Bay. The branches of government included Armyo Navy, Maritime Commission and War Shipping Administration. Then it was off to L. A. for that supposed retirement.

Tommy Poole, manager of the opera. tion, has been with Carter for 16 years. Like the boss, he is customer service ori. ented. In ofi hours, he takes an active role in the Lions Club, Boy Scouts and V.F.W.

Other sta.fi members are John E. Johnson, assistant m:rnager, now in his fourth year with the firm. Jeanne Bellanca is the credit-manager and bookkeeper; Bill Smith and J. D. Robertson, along with Ash and Richard make up the rest of the retail sales stafi. Seighard "Zig" Gruenberg has been with the firm seven years and in Carter's words, "is one of the best truck drivers in the business."

He earned the accolade by hard work and following the S.O.P. around Carter Lumber: be a salesman.

A Woy to Beot Tight Money?

He called on both management and la. bor organizations connected with home. building to urge all their members to "channel every available savings dollar in. to savings and loan institutions."

Pointing to the current drastic short. age of mortgage financingtraditional. ly obtained by most builders from the now depleted savings and loan associa. tionsMichnick noted that the consen. sus at the recently concluded convention of the National Association of Home Builders in Houston was tlat no relief is in sight.

"It's high time we came to realize that the mortgage funds we so desperately need are already partially in our own pocketsthat by having the millions of people whose livelihood depends on home. building deposit part of their savings and earnings in savings and loan associations, we can help bring life back into this sick industry," he said.

fT'S WITH great sentimental regret that ! one relinquishes a position as cherished as that of president of the Lumber Merchants Association of Northern Californiabut as you read these words a new man will hold this position and Iom certain he will do an excellent job for our industry.

Over the past year we have watched with concern the way the construction industry, and with it the building materials industry, have again taken the brunt of an o'economy cool-down." Perhaps this is necessarily so for construction, but it's hoped that building will get back to normal very soon.

Directing an organization like LMA is a Sreat opportunity for a person. He gets to meet many fine dealers and work with them on numerous projects developed to improve our industry. W'e all realize we can't accomplish much alone and it's this spirit of cooperation among {irms that really gets the job done.

Looking to the future one would have to say that our industry has both a challenge and commitment aheail. The challenge, as al' ways, is to survive in our chosen field. The commitment is to provide the necessary housing our customers need and demand.

I'm certain that each of us gives serious consideration to the many new developments occuring in our industrythe modules and the mobiles, the corporation builder, the rebuilding of our inner cities, etc. Perhaps it's difficult to determine tle exact role we wish to play in future construction, but we can't fail to keep thinking about it.

The Lumber Merchants Association with new officers and new exec. vp. is much aware of the new o'happenings" in our industry and will continue to provide dealers with information and advice on how to participate in them. I hope you will continue to give LMA the support and encouragement you have given me this past year. and I shall look forward to working with you again in the future.

LMA's New Executive VP

r are under way. Owners, managers and all other personnel will be interested in the triple headliner program arranged for this series of meetings. Don't miss your Dis. trict Roundup.

The program is of sufficient importance and interest to repeat briefly its main features. One of the WBMA officers (president Cameron Kyle, or vps. A. H. Parker and Bert F. Kinzig) will be present at each meeting to talk about Western and the year ahead. There will be a demonstration of WBMA's series of videotaped (closed circuit TV) product information for personnel t-raining and the visual information program of filmed how.to-do-it projects for in-store showing to your cus. tomers.

It's a program geared to you and the "now" marketHome Modernization.

The WBMA Home Improvement Work' shop at W'emme, Oregon, was attended by 38 member personnel. As usual, the panel members did an excellent job fiscussing the practical aspects of tlle home improvement business and its potential for all dealers, whatever their size or location. 'Western expresses its'sincere t\anks to the following persons for t}e time and efiort they contributed to make this workshop a success: Thomas B. THE month of May has been set aside I as "National Home Improvement Month."

Our national association, in cooperation with other national associationg is providing promotion material that gives the dealer ideas and banners to promote remodeling within his operation.

The home remodeling market runs into billions of dollars every year and Man 1970 will prove even more profitable to

dealers concentrating on remodeling because the adage "Itos cheaper to improve than to move" was never truer than in today's high priced housing market and tight money situation.

Often, if a family puts some careful thought into it, they'll find that converting a garage, closing in a porch, adding rgoms in attics or basement space, updating kitchens or bat-hs, or re-siding a shabby exterior will fill the bill as well as a new house.

In planning your advertising you should build it around exciting themeq themes that will persuade customers to begin thinking about enjoyment they can gain by

spending more money on their homes.

AIso work with your local wholesaler and manufacturer. All of tlem have promo. tional material to tie in with your home improvement advertising and promotion campaigrrs.

We distributed previously to all our members home improvement order forms. We hope you took advantage of it. May could be a very profitable month if you take advantage of this opportunity on promotion. ***

Quality Counter Tops, Phoenix and Crosby-Sprague Distributors, Phoenix have. recently been signed as new members of our association.

A major national promotion program to encourage new con. cepts of improved residential planning and design with wood has been approved by the American Wood Council.

The entire program, which includes advertising, publicity and local promotion, will be underway by mid-year.

According to John M. Camp, Jr., Council president, 'oThe na. tion is close to what may be the greatest housing boom of all time. But to date, most attention has been paid to quantity: horv many homes are needed. Today's public concern for environ. ment improvement makes it essential that some of that attention focus on quality: the way in which residential units are designed, built and placed on land.

Morris Tyre, 76, recently capped over 50 years of rvork with his election as chairman of the board of Bel-Air Door Co., Tyre Mfg. Co., Inc., Carved Doors Inc. and Alhambra Metal Products Inc. At the same time he named Samuel Fineman president of thcse companies.

The nationally reconized conglomeraic, known to the trade as Bel-Air Door Co., had its humble beginnings in downtown Los Angeles, and in 1940 moved to its present location in nearby Alhambra.

The company originally manufactured flush doors and hardwood plyw-ood. It now manufactures and distributes combinatiorr and jalousie doors and units in wood and aluminum. Their "Plaza" combination door unit is sold to other door manufaeturers, retailers and to the recreational vehicle industry. In addition, they have just introduced the "Time Saver," an all aluminum complete prefitted door jamb set; available with any one of the many models of doors from their door line.

The company employs approximately 60 people and occupies almost an entire city block, with over $/4 million of machinery and tooling. Inventory is well over $1, million.

With such key men as Len Hohman, in charge of inside sales (a 20 year company man), Jack Fineman, 17 years, in outside sales and Marty Rubino the company comptroller, a sales stafi of eleven and several first class distributors. the entire line is sold nationally.

According to Sam Fineman, "Our policy has always been to sell only wholesale. We are also the distributor in four western states for St. Regis Paper's fir stile and rail doors and have been the exclusive in California for the "Old Master" line of doors by Clear Fir Door Co. plus a handsorne line of imported hand-carved doors from Spain and birch door skins from Cauada."

1'he company plans to more than double their sales with an agressive sales program in 1970.

.l-'tHE VALLE of a lrade associ&tion has r been brought forcelully to bear on sonre sixty members of the Lumber As' sociation of Southern California.

These lumbermen recently received their pro rata share o{ the 'Workmen's Compensation dividend paid to the association. Somc participants received dividends of ovar 50/o of their total premium. Just one more {actor to substantiate the statement, "association membcrship pays."

During April a series of area meetings were helcl dealing with modular and prefabric'ated housing and its effect on both retail and wholesale lumbermen. Attendan(:c was excellent and the interest lcvel was crtrcmt'I1' high. Sinrilar meetings for all lunrbermcn in southern California will Jre held in thc Fall" and a tonic o[ timelv intercst discussed.

In nid-April, I had the pleasure of par-

ticipating in tht-- business portion oI the annual convention of the Lumber Association o{ Texas, held in San Antonio. There was an excellent attendance at all their meetings. Particularly impressive was the large, full capacity crowd, at the Sunday morning session. Such a large attendanct: could only prove that lumbermen are vitally concerned with their future in the lumber and building materials business, and are eager to hear of new innovations, the economists' predictions for the futurc of building, and how they can better utilize the tools available to them-as Bob Jones of the Middle Atlantic Association calls it1'Money, Manpower, Machines and Marketine."

Meeting with these people re-af{irmed rny faith in the genuineness of lumber pcople all ovcr. Thcy were a most hospittrblt' group arrd <xrrtainly Iaced with thc samr: problt:ms of money, grades, delivcr.l. sr,ht:dukrs and lruilding codes, to llamc u [ew, lhat lacc retailers across the nalion. 'I'heir trade show was solncwliat ncr\. to nrc and most impres-sivc.

One of the universal problems that con' front people in the lumber business is that so much business is transacted by word of mouth, with no signed contract involved. This practice evolved due to the trust placetL in eac]r other as members of the same industry. Few persons ever violated this verbal contract. During the past few months, work has been progressing on a contract {or the retail lumber dealers to use with contractors, or anyone to whom they are selling. The contract was approved by tle legal counsel for the association and was adopted by the board of directors at the NIay I meeting. It will be made available through the association office in a snap-out form,

MERCHANDISING AIDS

(Continued, lrom Page 14) get possible complaints, selling suggestions or ideas for new or improved products.

These are relayed to company headquarters in Los Angeles for action. An impressive number o{ designs and improvements have been made in the past few years as a result of this "feedback intelligence system."

It is this same receptive and aggressive attitude that Lane finds compatible with Sunset Builders Supply's merchandising plan.

'oTo sum up their image with me, I feel that they not only help us grow but they are helping themselves at the same time through their progressive consumer attitude," Lane said. ool'm a consumer oriented person, and so are they. The result is more sales for both of us."

Lane said Sunset stocks two doorlock lines, a premium-priced group and the competitive-priced Weslock, which he considers the highest quality and best design in the competitive price range.

'oWe used to carry three brands of locks, but finally dropped the third because of customer complaints," Lane said.

"On the rare occasion a lock comes back, there is never a question from the company or the salesman: it is replaced riqht now."

Another factor that appealed to Lane was the speed with which Weslock products, including both shelf items and special orders are delivered from the company in two weeks or less, in contrast to deliveries by competitors of six weeks or more.

Lane was enthusiastic about the Weslock 1970 sales program which, for the first time in the company's 43-year history is aimed at the consumer market. In past years, the lock company has gained its reputation as a supplier of new construction, and now claims one-third of all residential doorlock sales in new homes throughout the United States.

It also recommended support of two matters: legislation favoring the tax exempt status for interest earned through savings and loan firms and that discounts on FHA loans be passed on to the home buyer instead of the ruling that builders must pay these discounts.
