By WAYNE GARDNER executive vice president
.l-'tHE VALLE of a lrade associ&tion has r been brought forcelully to bear on sonre sixty members of the Lumber As' sociation of Southern California.
These lumbermen recently received their pro rata share o{ the 'Workmen's Compensation dividend paid to the association. Somc participants received dividends of ovar 50/o of their total premium. Just one more {actor to substantiate the statement, "association membcrship pays."
During April a series of area meetings were helcl dealing with modular and prefabric'ated housing and its effect on both retail and wholesale lumbermen. Attendan(:c was excellent and the interest lcvel was crtrcmt'I1' high. Sinrilar meetings for all lunrbermcn in southern California will Jre held in thc Fall" and a tonic o[ timelv intercst discussed.
In nid-April, I had the pleasure of par- ticipating in tht-- business portion oI the annual convention of the Lumber Association o{ Texas, held in San Antonio. There was an excellent attendance at all their meetings. Particularly impressive was the large, full capacity crowd, at the Sunday morning session. Such a large attendanct: could only prove that lumbermen are vitally concerned with their future in the lumber and building materials business, and are eager to hear of new innovations, the economists' predictions for the futurc of building, and how they can better utilize the tools available to them-as Bob Jones of the Middle Atlantic Association calls it1'Money, Manpower, Machines and Marketine."
Meeting with these people re-af{irmed rny faith in the genuineness of lumber pcople all ovcr. Thcy were a most hospittrblt' group arrd <xrrtainly Iaced with thc samr: problt:ms of money, grades, delivcr.l. sr,ht:dukrs and lruilding codes, to llamc u [ew, lhat lacc retailers across the nalion. 'I'heir trade show was solncwliat ncr\. to nrc and most impres-sivc.
One of the universal problems that con' front people in the lumber business is that so much business is transacted by word of mouth, with no signed contract involved. This practice evolved due to the trust placetL in eac]r other as members of the same industry. Few persons ever violated this verbal contract. During the past few months, work has been progressing on a contract {or the retail lumber dealers to use with contractors, or anyone to whom they are selling. The contract was approved by tle legal counsel for the association and was adopted by the board of directors at the NIay I meeting. It will be made available through the association office in a snap-out form,
