Coast to coast: only one dollar

HE deregulation of trucking has brought vast changes in the rules, the players and the prices of moving goods. Yet too often now we seem to be in an era of false bargains. The kind that are best described by the old saw: "if it seems too good to be true, it probably is."

As deregulation brought its wrenching changes, rate setting often went from competitive to brutal to unrealistic. Newly minted trucking companies undercut established firms by offering "too good to be true" rates, coupled with promises of services that belonged in The Twilieht Zone. While some of the new firms soon failed for flaunting the basic laws of economics, they were often replaced by yet another over-promiser quoting fantastic rates. The effect upon established truckers has been tough to say the very least.

To those tempted by the siren song of the untried we say beware. Consider that the established trucker has far more going for him than rates. Remember that he is the proven factor in the equation. His know-how, experience and considerable investment in equipment means that if there is a problem, he'll likely be around to help

you solve it. His background adds to what you don't know.

The established trucker often has invested in buildings, trained people, and a fleet of trucks costly enough to make the bankers blanch. His proven commitment means you're not out there alonei you and your firm have a supplier who is an asset, not someone who does a vanishing act just when you most need him.

We're not saylng rates don't count. Just that they are not the entire buy. The meaningful quality you seek when purchasing a service can take many forms. Just as surely, the money "saved" by using the new trucker operating out of his bedroom can be more than offset when his unmaintained andlor unsafe equipment, poorly trained and over worked drivers, etc. fail to deliver as promised. What kind of a "saving" did you make?

The established trucker is just that because he knows what needs to be done and has been fair to his customers. In the long haul, his "higher" prices may be the biggest bargain you find this year.

Dream becomes reality in pressure treated wood

IN ORDER to create the ideal

Iproject for pressure treated wood promotion, the Western Wood Preservers Institute sponsored the building of a three-level, 800 sq. ft. deck this year in Lafayette, Ca.

Billed as the Dream Deck, the structure was built entirely of pressure treated lumber. It now offers a dramatic view of Mount Diablo, which is not otherwise seen from the home. The deck also gives the homeowner a versatile entertainment area in what had formerly been a steep-sloping unused backyard.

The Dream Deck's design actually makes it three different decks. each with its own personality, tied into one. The top level is the trelliscovered wet bar and recessed cooking area where food and drinks can be prepared and served. The next and most spacious level is the recreational deck. Its size (15' x 23') makes it ideal for large group gatherings, ping-pong, sunning, etc. The third level, perched as if suspended in mid-air is an intimate dining and visiting area, featuring a sweeping panoramic view of the valley and Mount Diablo, the highest point in the San Francisco Bay area.

Story at a Glance

Dream Deck promotion shows best of pressure treated wood ...promotion will continue for several years...unusual site, view utilized to an advantage.

Since the entire deck is built along a steep hillside, it is designed with solid siding to make it safe for children, who might crawl through an open railing.

Built-in features greatly increase the Dream Deck's usefulness and beauty. Built-in benches along the perimeter walls provide convenient seating at each level. For entertaining on cool summer nights, fluorescent lights built in underneath the benches extend the deck's usefulness well beyond daylight hours. The deck was also built around existing landscaping, which included a large pine tree that now shades the deck. Built-in planter boxes allow for greenery to emphasize the deck's gardenJike appearance.

While the Dream Deck's t_otal square footage is quite large, its low profile keeps it from having an undesirable massive look. The wood's exceptional surface appearance is credited to the selection of topgrade wood before the treatment was applied. Most chemicals used in pressure-treating wood give the lumber a greenish tint, but there are some treatments available that do not change the natural color of the wood. For overall appearance, however, the quality and grade of wood selected is really more important than the type of treatment used.

Even when selecting redwood or some other naturally durable species for a deck, pressure-treated lumber should be used for the understructure to ensure the longevity of these crucial load-carrying members. Pressure treated wood products are subject to strict quality control standards set by the American Wood Preservers Bureau. Compliance with those standards is signified with the AWPB quality mark stamped on pressure treated

lumber products. With the Dream Deck being built on a steep hillside, the structural integrity of the understructure was doubly important.

The WWPI Consumer Education committee expects the promotional value of the Dream Deck to last for several years. Promotion of the project was kicked off in February of this vear.

Treated Lumber Projects

The scarcity of plans for projects desigrred exclusively for pressure treated lumber is a common complaint among retailers.

An answer to this problfii is the brand new Book of Duks and Outdoor Projecfs from Georgia-Pacific. It contains 32 pages of ideas for building and planning decks and outdoor projectsall featuring pressure treated lumber. Detaild plans include a gazebo, sun porch, planters, a sandbox and a buffet on wheels.

The booklet details deck building basics such as planning a deck and selec'ting building materials, attaching the deck to the house, setting posts, attaching joists, nailing the decking and fine finishing points. Building stairs and railings is covered as well as information on wood joinery.

Plans include a basic square deck which is easy to build and economical. Gridwork decks, terraced decks, "around the pool" and fire pit decks are also featured. Fences and walkways are pictured, as well as an arbr and a mini-pool for the kids.

Washington retailer expands with p/t wood

IIENRY Bacon Building Materi- JTals, Inc., located in the State of Washington, has experienced a real surge in sales of pressure-treated lumber in recent years. At the present time, Henry Bacon Building Materials has stores in Seattle, Bellevue and Renton, with a fourth store in Kent scheduled to open in April.

Art Burk, commodity purchasing manager for Bacon Building Materials, was interviewed recently regarding the exceptional sales in pressuretreated lumber attributed to his company. Burk's response to that interview follows.

"We're able to sell so much pressure-treated lumber because the consumers are demanding it. The pressure treating companies have been advertising pressure-treated wood and we have been merchandising and promoting it as well. Our people like to sell it. They are knowledgeable about the product and how it is processed and how it performs. They like the results of the treatment; they like the color; they like the quality of the wood and they are not hesitant to recommend it to our customers with confidence.

"We watched the improvements

made in quality control in processing pressure treated wood, and we are now able to sell a lot of it.

"We are displaying it, merchandising it, stocking it and doing a much better job on behalf of our customers. Sales have also benefited from a new local building code that requires that deck boards as well as the substructure be either cedar or pressure treated.

"In addition to deck boards and posts, we are very big in fencing and new landscape ties. We offer sizes 7" x9" x 8' and 4" x6" x 8'and sell truckloads of them. Our customers like the color and the finish. They like the fact that they can paint these timbers if they wish. We are even getting into pressure treated joists and other new dimensions.

"Our mix of business is about 5090 contractor and 5090 do-ityourself customers. Included among those contractors is a cadre of six or seven specialized deck builders who are swinging their business towards pressure treated wood.

"We think the future of pressure treated wood is excellent. and that is why we aggressively merchandise and sell it."

Treated wood begins at the bottom

EOR DECADES lumber dealers

Fhave stocked pressure treated wood to sell as sill plate in building concrete foundations. Today, however, builders are beginning to realize that they can use pressure treated wood to build the entire foundation. Fifteen years after its introduction in 1969, the acceptance of the All Weather Wood Foundation is finally starting to take hold. American Wood Preservers Bureau statistics show that pressure treated wood foundation lumber and plywood salesincreased respectivelyby 419o and 45Vo in 1983. At the beginning of the 80s only 50,000 homes had been built with the AWWF in the U.S. Now there are nearly 100,000.

Lumber dealers wishing to cash in on this emerging market should be primed with the facts that will help them answer questions that customers have regarding this system.

Treated Lumber Output Up

1983 was a record year for pressure treated lumber with the American Wood Preservers Bureau recording a 3l9o increase.in waterborne lumber treatment production.

Charles Thomas, president of this guality control arm of the pressure treated wood industry, said "This is the largest single year increase in lumber treating the industry has ever segn.tt

The bureau quality marked 2.2billion board feet of lumber, representing about 7O9o of the totat lumber treated.

There also were dramatic increass in the production of both pressure treated plywood and All Weather Wood Foundation.

Story at a Glance

Acceptance of all wood pres. sure treated foundation on rise ..dealers need to do home. work...prepare for questions from customers...excellent market potential.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture started testing pressure treated wood foundations 40 years ago. As a result of those tests, the Department of Agriculture determined that the structural life of a pressure treated wood foundation would be over 100 years.

It has long been known that wood is a natural insulator, and the energy savings possible with a wood foundation can amount to as much as 450/0.

When used to construct a fullheight basement, the stud wall cavity of the wood basement can be finished off with the same materials and methods as the above-grade level.

In addition to applications for conventional homes, the American Wood Preservers Institute and Western Wood Preservers Institute have joined efforts to promote AWWFs for mobile homes. Last year a set of plans for mobile home AWWFs was sent to 600 mobile home manufacturers and California State building inspectors for that purpose.

Builders appreciate the fact that the AWWF can be installed during virtually any weather condition, thus keeping most weather factors from interrupting construction scheduling. What's more, the same carpentry crew that frames the home can also install the founda-

tion, with framing to begin immediately after the foundation is in place. Don Kamm, vice president of Universal American Homes, claims his crews "save at least a week in construction time" when using the AWWF.

A pamplet entitled "What Every Home Builder Should Know About All Weather Wood Foundations" can be obtained by mailing a self addressed stamped envelope to Western Wood Preservers Institute, P.O. Box 748, Del Mar, Ca. 921014.

April,1984 13
TILT-UP walls for the All Weather Wood Foundation are put in place by workmen at the Design House built in Calabasas, Ca., under the sponsorship of the American Wood Council. Because the wood construction made it easy to finish off, the basement was designed as living area, doubling the square footage for a minimal cost increase.

Industry group develops long range plan

1f, SPECIAL task group to review Isgrrsnt market possibilities and look at known impediments to the acceptance and specification of pressure treated wood products has been appointed by the product acceptance committee of the Society of American Wood Preservers, Inc.

This group, chaired by Jim Gauntt, Osmose Wood Preserving Co. of America, includes Robert Eckert, Weyerhaeuser Co., Fred Omundson, Mineral Research and Development Corp., Barry Holden, Hoover Tieated Wood Products, Rick Donaldson, Weekley Lumber Co., and myself. In addition to reviewing current market possibilities, it will identify impediments which can result from use problems and prejudice and recommend solutions to them. A national long range plan will be developed to coordinate the planning of objectives and subsequent actions with other wood products trade associations.

To date, the group has completed their review of major marketing goals and ingredients that can affect

pressure treated wood markets. It is anticipated that the overall plan will be completed by August and be revieWed by the industry and allied organizations soon thereafter.

The task group will invite allied wood products trade associations to a seminar where the National Long Range Plan for Pressure Tieated Wood will be examined. Success of the plan is dependent upon coordinated acceptance and action by the entire wood products industry. Since product promotion will be on a generic basis, the entire industry will benefit equally from the plan. A major decision, in addition to approving the plan concept, will be to determine administrative responsibilities under the overall umbrella objectives of substantially increasing existing pressure treated wood markets and developing new market opportunities.

Another area to be considered is quality control and quality treated wood products. There seems to be a direct relationship between impediments to markets and the need for a system to produce a quality product. The treating industry has an excellent quality control program at the present time that is working well and is widely accepted by regulatory agencies. Still problems persist, particularly with fire retardants, that demand to be resolved.

In summary, this activity will approach (1) development of a nationwide marketing plan; (2) enlistment of support by the entire wood products industry; (3) determining administrative responsibilities, and (4) concentration on quality products and quality control. Other factors necessary to assure the ultimate success of the nationwide program include a thorough review of research needs. educational seminars, building code amendments, promotional activities, plan of acceptance of pressure treated

wood products at all consumer levels, and guidelines for nationwide coordination of marketing objectives.

Understandably, such a plan, even reduced to a smaller scale, is an ambitious one. And, the projected success of the plan is entirely dependent upon the cooperation of

treated wood interests throughout the United States.

Statistics reveal that, over the past few years, there has developed a new consumer and specifier awareness of the benefits of the use of pressure treated wood. Some of this emanates from publicity surrounding use of the innovative All Weather Wood Foundation System, and corollary residential applications such as walks, patios, porches, stairs, decks and planters.

The committee has developed three and ten year goals for the industry. The major market goals for waterborne preservatives are to move from a current production level of approximately three billion board feet per year to four billion board feet per year by 1987 and six billion board feet per year by 1994. The major goals for fire retardant treated wood are to move from current production of 200 million board feet to 600 million board feet by 1987 and 1700-2000 million board feet bv 1994.

AWPB takes good care of your customer

I ONG BEFORE "consumer probtection" became abuzz word, a few individuals in the wood preserving industry began to realize that the quality of their production was an absolute necessity. So in 1971, they took action that led to the formation of the American Wood Preservers Bureau.

The original board of governors determined that the Bureau's function was not to replace the treating inspection companies already in place, but to utilize them in ways to provide full consumer protection. The board also realized that to serve treated wood customers efficiently, AWPB would need a statistical system of quality control. For that purpose, they adapted the quality mark system used by the American Lumber Standards Comittee. In addition to the quality mark program, AWPB went a step further and created a central laboratory to ensure real third-party consumer assurance of quality in pressure-treated wood products.

With this system in place, the Bureau is at work today monitoring quality-marked materials at treating plants, wholesale yards, retail loca-

tions and even job sites. The field team, headed by Donn Keefe, takes some 1500 samples per year and ships them to the AWPB laboratory in Arlington, Va., for inspection.

Story at a Glance

As the samples are received at the laboratory, they are sorted, logged and labeled before being put into a forced-air circulating oven and baked about two hours until they are "bone dry." Then the samples are weighed and ground and put back into the oven to remove any moisture they might have absorbed during the grinding process. Next the ground samples are pelletized to prepare them for analysis by the X-ray spectro-

meter. It takes only 20 seconds for the spectrometer to produce a precise printout covering up to five elements in the wood. Samples that are nonconforming are then double-checked through a method incorporating a highly advanced atomic spectrometer.

Because the analysis is so important to the treater and consumer, information about non-conforming samples is telephoned immediately to the inspection agency.

Consumer acceptance and industry dependence on the AWPB quality mark and laboratory testing progr.rm are evidenced by the record membership of over 300 plants, producing a record 2.2 billion board feet of pressure-treated lumber in 1983. Particularly strong are the production statistics for wood foundation lumber, which showed the best improvement per category in 1983 (see bar-graph illustration).

As a result of the efforts of a few farsighted individuals who originated and createtl AWPB's independent third-party control system, consumers today can purchase qudlity marked pressure-treated lumber with complete confidence in the treatment. Pressuretreated lumber sales are recording alltime highs, and in the future look to grow even stronger.

BE Opens "SuperStore"

Builders Emporium has opened its first "SuperStore" in Tirstin, Ca.

The Edinger Avenue store, Builders Emporium's second Tirstin location, is the prototype of the company's new "SuperStore" concept for home improvement centers. It features a broader selection of merchandise for both the do-it-yourselfer and home contractor than is offered by traditional Builders Emporium outlets, and double the inventory of lumber.

Anthony J. Swies, president of Irvine,Ca., .headquartered BuildersEmporium, a unit of Wickes Companies, Inc., suggests the new store's merchandise mix offers "the best of both the traditional Builders Emporium home center and full-service lumber and building materials operation."

"The new store, which brings the total of Builders Emporium stores in Orange County to ll, allows us to better serve the needs ofthe serious as well as the weekend do-it-yourselfer," Swies notes.

The 50,000 sq. ft. "SuperStore" is situated on seven acres and sells more than 20,000 items ranging from lumber, hardware, and power tools to

plumbing and electrical supplies. The new location features an extensive indoor and outdoor building materials yard with more than five times the board feet of lumber a traditional home center would carry and other items geared to the professional and weekend contractor.

It also offers heavier merchandise not usually sold at Builders Emporium such as bathtubs, showers, pedestal sinks and case goods, and a vastly expanded selection of doors, windows, and paint and plumbing supplies. The store also offers its customers expanded store hours, delivery of selected merchandise, special catalog orders and installation services.

A custom kitchen cabinet department will feature a full line of quality cabinets and vanities manufactured by Paragon.

The recent grand reopening included special sales, merchandise giveaways and in-store demonstrations, drawings for more than $4,000 in prizes: a $1,000 shopping spree, a Castrol mini<ar with a 2 hp. engine, a Gumout mini-truck and a lO-inch radial arm saw.

Pop Larsen, Builders Emporium's

do-it-yourself home improvement specialist, was available at the store all weekend to answer questions on virtually any do-it-yourself project.

Big Bucks In Decks

The patio deck market, a natural for pressure treated lumber, is expected to use as much as a billion board feet of lumber this year. Statistics estimate that 20/o of the country's 84 million households will add a deck in '84.

Some of our finest woods went to build Sailing Ships and fine San Francisco Buildings

Since then, Allen and Higgins Lumber Co. was destroyed during the 1906 earthquake and fire, only to reopen in four days to help San Francisco rebuild after the catastrophe.

In the years that followed, we proudly supplied much of the exotic woods for such landmarks as William R. Hearst's San Simeon Castle, the Flood Building and the reconstruction of St. Mary's Cathedral.

After the ups and downs of the depression, the war years and another devastating fire in 1969, J. E. Higgins rebuilt again. determined to offer a wider range of products, larger inventories and expanded customer services.

Now with 8 major distribution yards plus drying, milling and moulding facilities, this commitment to customer service continues with us today. In 1883, J. E. would have insisted on it.

mulgated, hands being rung (as well as shaken), old friends found and drinks drunk.

While total registration was up marginally to 1058 from last year's 1012, no true estimate of the state of the industry is complete without an informal survey of the lobby and hospitality suites. While the crowds were ample, some expressed surprise that they weren't larger, given the generally good business conditions this year and the expectation of continuing strong business throughout 1984. The meeting was held March 13 - 16, as usual at the St. Francis Hotel, San Francisco, Ca.

In a forecast of industry conditions, H.A. Roberts said continued vigor in domestic markets can be expected to generate increased sales for western softwood producers.Robert s title was upgraded at the meeting from executive vice president to president, a cosmetic touch expected to aid

association's 45th annual convention at the Red Lion Inn, Sacramento.

The area was selected since this year's program will be directed toward legislative progress of the association. The plan is to brief dealers and spouses on critical is$es affecting our industry.Briefings will be conducted by either legislative aids or by agency representatives involved in the issues. Dealers will be provided with white papers and packets on the issues and will then visit with their individual assemblvman and senator at the state level.

The purpose of the visit will be to urge each legislator to support our position on key issues. A meeting with your legislator in his Sacramento office will have considerable impact. We need the help of all dealers to become involved in the legislative process.

People who bury their heads in the sand as an ostrich only achieve an earful of sand.

Many retail lumber and building material dealers are finding sand in their ears because they are hiding their heads from the influx of mass merchandisers into their market area. They hope the situation will go away, but the mass merchandisers keep coming in one form or another.

The do-it-yourself industry peaked M5 billion in 1983. That is enough of a market to entice a{ry corporate giant, even those totally unrelated to the building material industry.

One of the loudest cries from the independent lumber and building material dealers, nationwide, is, "What can we do about the rapid increase of mass merchandisers into our market afea?"

There is nothing you can do about it since the private enterprise system promotes competition, and the mass merchandiser has as much right to the market as any dealer. What you must do is retain your share of the market and hopefully continue to gain a bigger share.

Keep us psted on your club or group's upcotning meetings. But he sure and, submit them at, Ieast seaen weeks belore the eaent lo make sure there will be time to list them in an hsue in circulatinn belore the big day happens.

These active markets know pressure treated wood can safely be used in direct ground contact. Materials such as posts, landscape timbers, deck supports, poles and substructures can mean new business for you. Pressure treating permanently locks preservative chemicals deep into the wood fibers. Levels of treatment are identified by the quality control marks of the American Wood heservers Bureau. Wood marked LP-2 is for use above ground and LP-22 is designated for wood in direct ground contact. To be sure. it is recommended that all wood intended for outdoor home /\ GRouND use bear the LP-22 mark. \y2 "?HIj."t

gathered at The Newporter, Newport Beach. Ca.. for the 28th annual convention of the International Hardwood Products Association and third annual International Forest Products Exhibition, March 6-10.

More than 250 people, a record crowd, were on hand for the up beat programs and business sessions which included the election of Peter Hewitt as president, succeeding Jack Millikan. C. W. Robinson was named as senior vice president and Harry Buckley, treasurer. Joe Stolzoff, Claus Peter Wolff and Ken Roach were added to the board of directors.

Outstanding was the word most heard in connection with the forest products exhibition arranged under the direction of Harry Buckley. Official exhibitors included the Indonesian Wood Panel Association, Indonesian Timber Society, Thiwan Plywood Manufacturers & Exporters Association, Korea Plywood Industries Association, West African Hardwood Imports, Ltd., Malaysian Timber Industry Board and Sabah Marketing Corporation Adn. Bhd. The attractive exhibits which included products, literature, and, in some

cases, decorative items were the hub of activity during the convention.

Recognition of exhibiting delegates occupied most of the opening session with presentations highlighting each country represented. Following the official exhibit ribbon cutting, the group convened for lunch. Exhibiting country delegations were introduced by Jim Summerlin, director of region 2. Luncheon speaker was Dr. Art Lange, who gave a lively presentation on "Stress Management."

You still cant sell a better wood for decks, fences and other garden structures than redwood. In fact, no other woods, even pressure-fteated woods, come close to its performance and natural beauty.

And no other woods offer you better profits. There's always a dependable supply and there's always a big demand because your customers know the natural qualities of redwood. It lasts longer, stays straighter and weathers better than other woods.

Plus, you get top dollar for every piece because it won't warp in your yard like other woods. Thereb no waste.

So why offer imitations? Stock up now on the real thing-redwood.

WOOD

FOR

Don't Burn The Wood

Dealers should caution customers that it can be dangerous to burn treated lumber in a fireplace or any open flame fire. Poisons released into the air can cause serious illness.

Treated lumber should be used only for its intended purpose in building. Scraps which can not be utilized in small projects should be buried according to industry experts.

A company says thanks in a big way

Iu|ffi;:Tl3,tfi.1x'"1T5:X: ways, but few do it on the scale Fruit Growers Supply and their United Wholesale Lumber Co. subsidiary recently did in Medford, Or.

They invited approximately 350 mill and other industry friends to bring their wives and dates for an evening of dining, dancing and to.en- joy a full show starring Jimmie Rodgers.

Rodgers, who is a personal friend of FGS president Tim Lindgren, was

a particularly apt choice for entertainment. Born in Camas, Wa., Jimmie Rodgers roamed the Pacific Northwest, working in a number of logging camps prior to the release of his first record, "Honeycomb." The song quickly sold over one million copies, propelling Rodgers into a long and successful career as a singer-enteriainer. He has made over 30 albums with over 40 million in record sales.

The investment Fruit Growers Supply and United Wholesale Lumber put into the corporate thank-you was

well received by those attending. As one of the customers put it, "they did everything first class, it shows and I don't know wheg I've seen so many people enjoy themselves so much." A number of top FGS and United officers were present.

While most of couples were from the Southern Oregon/Northern California area some were from other states, including one man who made the trip from New York for the big evening, March 2.

Manville Loses for Second Time

A $6.1 million, plus interest, verdict reached in 1982 against Manville Corp., Denver, Co., has been upheld by the U.S. 4th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Diego, Ca.

The original verdict allowed condominium owners suing Manville to collect damages incurred from using a Manville drywall product despite Manville being under the protection of Chapter ll of the federal bankruptcy laws.

At the end of the 1982 trial Manville was ordered to purchase a bond from an insurance company that guaranteed to pay the judgement if Manville lost the case. Payment will now be collected from the insurer.

Management Training Seminar

The Westerner's Club, developed to assist in the training and education of employees with management potential, has scheduled the first seminar for April 27-28 at the Holiday Inn, Sunnyvale, Ca.

There are currently more than 50 employees participating. They hope to build to 150 in the near future.

Fir and Pine Lumber Co. intends to sell its Santa Fe Springs, Ca., headquarters property and acquire a smaller site in Orange County, Ca., according to Bob Gaylord, sole owner of the company. The firm has occupied its 4.7 acre facility for eight years.

The company plans to use two or three forklifts at its new location for materials handling. The balance of the inventory will be maintained at four or five custom mills in the general area."It's all part of a streamlining plan," according to Gaylord, who added that increased operating costs triggered the company changes.

The wholesale distribution firm deals in industrial lumber, softwoods and hardwoods as well as retail specialty items.

NAWLA Helps Sell Lumber

The North American Wholesale Lumber Association works in many ways directed towards improved wood products distribution. Sales training education is an important part of their information system. This information is available in three related programs:

(l) The NATWLA Wood Marketing Seminars held in the Spring and Fall at two major universities in the United States provide accelerated training and development to young lumber sales people new to the industry.

(2) The developing NAWLA InHouse Training Program, when completed, will provide the opportunity to establish a training library for their employees.

(3) The sales training manual "There IS a Better Way to Sell Lumber" has long been cited as being the foremost sales training manual in the forest products industry.

First introduced in 1970, the manual has undergone numerous revisions to reflect current business conditions. Today, more than 4,000 copies of "There IS a Better Way to Sell Lumber" are being used by sales and marketing people at the wholesale and mill levels throughout North America and in several foreign countries. The manual is designed to increase the productivity of practically everyone who sells lumber or who directly supervises lumber sales people in four ways by helping to:

(l) Prepare a definite Sales Improvement Plan that is written and tailored to an individual's specific needs. The plan establishes priorities and provides a means to measure progress regularly to improve selling skills immediately and continuously over a long period.

(2) Develop objectives in keeping with one's abilities and show lumber sales people and sales supervisors how they can direct their companies.

(3) Apply basic principles of selling consciously and consistently.

(4) Increase follow-through, including how to apply the seven basic principles of selling lumber immediately and continuously to develop habitual and improving use.

The training manual is extensively illustrated with sales examples drawn from actual sales experiences by hundreds of lumbermen. Workbook sessions contribute to the manual being used as a thorough guide for the sales person and/or sales trainer. "There IS a Better Way to Sell Lumber" is also a management tool for the sales manager who wishes to assist each of his people to increase their sales earnings. The manual also lends itself for use in the implementation of an inhouse training program.

The NAWLA Sales Training Manual is available for $35. Interested parties may contact NAWLA at 234O So. Arlington Heights Road, Suite 680, Arlington Heights, Il. 60005.

Strong Block

The new PermaBrick 4" x 8" (nominal) 10090 natural earthen brick is strengthened by impregnation with acrylic resin.

Designers can use the brick for flooring in moisture laden andlor high traffic areas where porous common brick would not be practical.

The acrylic is reportedly up to l0 times as wear resistant as regular brick. It is stain resistant, as is the special grout supplied for use with it.

Requiring no special installation techniques, the pre-mixed and colored grout completes the system.

Vent Installation

Kys-Vent from Keyes Fibre is a new formed fiber insulation vent panel designed to protect ventilation and maximize insulation in new and existing buildings. Manufactured from molded fiber, it's formed into a one piece panel measuring 12" x 60" x l"

Two airflow channels run the length of the panel which is scored and slotted at the I ft. mark for use in multiple roof configurations. A free air-flow between the roof and insulation eliminates trapped moisture which occurs as wood fiber products breathe and foam does not.

in export efforts as many outside this country insist on dealing with what they perceive as the chief executive of an organization.

Roberts estimated that total U.S. demand should be 2 billion board feet higher than last year.

"That will still fall nearly 2 billion b.f. short of what we call our normal y€r," he said.

Roberts noted that 1984 housing starts in the West should increase 69,000 units over a year ago. The West is the major market for Western lumber products. "The West was the winner in 1983," he said. "We had an increase of 177,000 units over 1982. That represents an 8690 gain. The South followed with a 5890 increase, or a total increase of 345,000 units."

In addition to the 16.8 billion board feet of other production in the West this year, the Redwood region is expected to produce 1.62 billion feet, Roberts said. Southern U.S. production is expected to reach 7.14 billion

while other U.S. producing regions should total 1.40 billion.

Canadian lumber shipped to the U.S. is expected to total 12.40 billion b.f. in 1984.

Total lumber consumption in the U.S. is expected to reach 37.60 billion b.f. in 1984, up from 35.68 billion last year.

New housing should consume 15.84 billion b.f. of lumber, some 4.890 more than in 1983. That expectation was based on the WWPA's forecast of 1.8 million housing starts this year. Last year, L7 million units were built.

Moderate growth is expected in other major markets. New construction (other than homebuilding) is expected to consume 6.31 billion b.f., up from 5.94 billion recorded in 1983. Repair and remodeling should take 8.30 billion, compared to 8.21 billion in 1983. Materials handling should account for 3.60 billion, up from 3.ll billion last year. Lumber exports should reach 1.86 billion, up from 1.76 billion feet last year.

The first stages of a major program to build demand for western lumber products were unveiled at the meeting. The program, intended to develop

a potential of 2.5 billion board feet in total annual domestic U.S. demand by its fifth year, will focus heavilY upon a region ranging from Ohio in the East to Texas in the South, including the traditional Midwest and West' The association has budgeted $2.3 million to finance the first year of the effort. Another $379,000including some federal matching fundsis earmarked for export marketing during WWPA's fiscal year, which began April l.

Major first-year energy is assigned to restart many on-going basic WWPA marketing functions eroded during the three-year economic recession the industry suffered beginning in late 1979. But also commencing this spring are three of ten program components plannned to be phased-in by 1986. The three are:

Eucalyptus keeps on trying

HffiT*Y:^'L#"i,n:

fast growth and an ability to adapt to hot tropical climates.

Originating in Australia, the tree was introduced to California in 1853. In 1854 a French trader visiting Melbourne became determined to grow the eucalyptus in Algeria. Through his efforts, the species was transferred to the Mediterranean, Southern Europe and Africa as well as the United States. Eucalypts in Hawaii date back to 1880.

As the tree adapted to new geographical locations, it became useful for landscaping, firewood and limited use as a timber. Some considered wood from the tree to be fireproof. Since eucalyptus shingles were used on houses in Australia, an attempt was made to introduce them to California. Although many groves were planted, eucalyptus failed to become a wood of commercial importance.

The eucalypts have general hardwood characteristics, typically contain high internal stresses and are prone to excessive shrinkage and distortion on drnng. This severely reduces the yield of usable material. However, high quality hardboard can be produced in volume from mature wood of a large number of species. In general the wood is suitable for wet process pro-

duction. It also can be used for insulation board manufacture.

E. saligna is used commercially for production of particleboard at a plant in Brazil. A small amount of Australian plywood uses veneer from mature trees of several species. Eucalyptus lumber is widely used in Australia. Utility and construction poles, marine and foundation piles, posts and rails are produced from the eucalypts in most of the countries where they are grown.

Many efforts have been made to develop the eucalyptus commercially in the United States. Tests have been conducted in California, Oregon and Florida as well as Hawaii. The United States Department of Agriculture has held several workshops and published a number of research papers on the subject.

An excellent example of an attempt to commercialize the species is a study

done in Hawaii on robusta, a common species there.

Robusta (Eucalyptus robusta Sm.) has been grown in Hawaii since 1800. In 1960 there were 4,000 acres of merchantable stands on Hawaii; 1700 on Maui; 300 on Molokai; 2,000 on Oahu and 1,600 on Kauai, most growing in easily accessible plantations.

It was estimated that there were some I l0 million board feet of quality saw timber available. Marketing was thought to have been hampered by lack of knowledge and adverse opinions. Most of which had been debunked by local milling experience and research at the U.S. Forest Products Laboratory, Madison, Wi., supported by the Hawaii Forestry Division.

A strong, hard wood, resistant to rot, used in agriculture, home construction and conveyor slats and residue flumesat the sugar mills, robusta appeared to have more potential commercial use. It was thought that a veneer slicing plant would be an excellent outlet for higher grade material.

Despite this favorable outlook, in 20 years eucalyptus in Hawaii has made little progress commercially. The studies continue, though, and perhaps the day will come.

"LOOKING AROUND" says Paul Bunyan

Paul does not rcst on his fame as the lumberman's symbol of accomplishment. New requirements and changing conditions keep him alert to progress.

much as 1,200 b.f. in additional lumber used in floor joists. Additionally, a major element in WWPA's programming is pressure-treated wood foundations. The opportunity specifically for western lumber producers is an additional 100 million b.f. per year, valued at some $26 million, just in individual houses.

(2) Outdoor living wood applications. Another use for preservative pressure-treated wood products, to capitalize upon expanding to outdoor wood patio decks the living space new homes are losing as they become smaller and "more affordable." Also, plans include major expectations for demand g;rowth through home remodeling, both by do-it-yourselfers and professional contractors. WWPA sees a potential of some 281 million b.f. of additional annual demand by 1988, valued conservatively at about $90 million to western lumber manufacturers.

(3) Non-residential building construction. Western lumbermen are shooting for an additional459 million b.f. per year by 1988-the equivalent of some 11,475 more buildings (at an average lumber volume of 40,000 b.f. each).

The heart of WWPA's new program is strategic employment of a small corps of professional lumberuse specialists who travel priority market areas presenting educational seminars to architects, engineers, wholesalers, retail lumber managers and employees, competent manufacturers, homebuilders and building code officials. Tlade advertising, merchandising materials, editorial publicity and technical and conceptual literature supports the field action.

At the WWPA luncheon Dr. Charls E. Walker, a renom economist, said that the U.S. needs a new tax base, possibly including a Value Added Tbx. He foresees a positive business scenario for 1984 if, as he expects, defense spending is cut and the Congress approves a tax increase. If not, Walker anticipates serious financial consequences will ensue.

A clue to which course may be found by watching the financial markets' reaction to the federal deficit, he suggested.

WWPA's next major meeting will be the Fall meeting, Sept. 15-18, 1984 at Del Monte Hyatt House, Monterey, Ca.
