Manville Loses for Second Time
A $6.1 million, plus interest, verdict reached in 1982 against Manville Corp., Denver, Co., has been upheld by the U.S. 4th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Diego, Ca.
The original verdict allowed condominium owners suing Manville to collect damages incurred from using a Manville drywall product despite Manville being under the protection of Chapter ll of the federal bankruptcy laws.
At the end of the 1982 trial Manville was ordered to purchase a bond from an insurance company that guaranteed to pay the judgement if Manville lost the case. Payment will now be collected from the insurer.
Management Training Seminar
The Westerner's Club, developed to assist in the training and education of employees with management potential, has scheduled the first seminar for April 27-28 at the Holiday Inn, Sunnyvale, Ca.
There are currently more than 50 employees participating. They hope to build to 150 in the near future.
Jeff Meyers of the San Jose police department and Ralph Lamon, Lamon Lumber Co., San Francisco, will speak at the meeting. A tour of Southern Lumber Co., San Jose, will be held.
Distributor Downsizes Facilities
Fir and Pine Lumber Co. intends to sell its Santa Fe Springs, Ca., headquarters property and acquire a smaller site in Orange County, Ca., according to Bob Gaylord, sole owner of the company. The firm has occupied its 4.7 acre facility for eight years.
The company plans to use two or three forklifts at its new location for materials handling. The balance of the inventory will be maintained at four or five custom mills in the general area."It's all part of a streamlining plan," according to Gaylord, who added that increased operating costs triggered the company changes.
The wholesale distribution firm deals in industrial lumber, softwoods and hardwoods as well as retail specialty items.
New Sunrise Subsidiary
HGH Lumber Sales, a Chino, Ca., specialty firm, has been acquired by Sunrise Forest Products of Lake Oswego, Or. No price was revealed in the transaction, according to Darrell Robinson, president of Sunrise.
The new subsidiary is now situated on part of the property of Parr Lumber Co., another subsidiary of Sunrise which is operated by Sunrise principal Pete Parrella. HGH had previously been associated with International Forest Products and operated from their Chino facility.
Larry Holguin is the president of F{GH. Wayne Benton is the product manager. The firm sells redwood, cedar, pine, Douglas fir clears as well as remanufacturing items. Its sales area is the Pacific Southwest.

NAWLA Helps Sell Lumber
The North American Wholesale Lumber Association works in many ways directed towards improved wood products distribution. Sales training education is an important part of their information system. This information is available in three related programs:
(l) The NATWLA Wood Marketing Seminars held in the Spring and Fall at two major universities in the United States provide accelerated training and development to young lumber sales people new to the industry.
(2) The developing NAWLA InHouse Training Program, when completed, will provide the opportunity to establish a training library for their employees.
(3) The sales training manual "There IS a Better Way to Sell Lumber" has long been cited as being the foremost sales training manual in the forest products industry.
First introduced in 1970, the manual has undergone numerous revisions to reflect current business conditions. Today, more than 4,000 copies of "There IS a Better Way to Sell Lumber" are being used by sales and marketing people at the wholesale and mill levels throughout North America and in several foreign countries. The manual is designed to increase the productivity of practically everyone who sells lumber or who directly supervises lumber sales people in four ways by helping to:
(l) Prepare a definite Sales Improvement Plan that is written and tailored to an individual's specific needs. The plan establishes priorities and provides a means to measure progress regularly to improve selling skills immediately and continuously over a long period.
(2) Develop objectives in keeping with one's abilities and show lumber sales people and sales supervisors how they can direct their companies.
(3) Apply basic principles of selling consciously and consistently.
(4) Increase follow-through, including how to apply the seven basic principles of selling lumber immediately and continuously to develop habitual and improving use.
The training manual is extensively illustrated with sales examples drawn from actual sales experiences by hundreds of lumbermen. Workbook sessions contribute to the manual being used as a thorough guide for the sales person and/or sales trainer. "There IS a Better Way to Sell Lumber" is also a management tool for the sales manager who wishes to assist each of his people to increase their sales earnings. The manual also lends itself for use in the implementation of an inhouse training program.

The NAWLA Sales Training Manual is available for $35. Interested parties may contact NAWLA at 234O So. Arlington Heights Road, Suite 680, Arlington Heights, Il. 60005.
