Ready-To-Go Decking

For d-i-yers, Panel Clip's new wood deck kit is a prepackaged set of galvanized structural wood connectors that reportedly simplify deck building. A materials list and plans are included for l0' x l0', l0' x 16' and lO' x20' decks.

With additional clips, the basic deck kits can be expanded for larger or odd shaped decks. The package also includes a copy of the "Built-ItWith Clips" book which shows how decks and other wood projects can be built.

The new Peak automatic home fire sprinkler requires no special skills or knowledge to convert existing shutoff valves to fire sprinklers.

Quick Stick

3M Brand Super 77 Spray adhesive is a new clear, multipurpose aerosol adhesive, usable for many picture framing applications.

It develops quickly, with aggressive tack and fast strength buildup to speed assembly operations.

Components can be bonded in as little as 15 seconds or up to 15 minutes after adhesive application to one bonding surface. The adhesive will reportedly maintain its high tack for 15 minutes even on porous materials. A longer bonding range of 30 minutes can be achieved when the adhesive is applied to both bonding surfaces. The long bonding range allows a number of components to be coated at a time.

Typical applications include bonding decorative cloth or canvas to boards or frames, mounting maps and illustrations, or holding dust jackets on pictures.

Spreading The Wealth

The new Cyclone shoulder strap spreader from the Allegheny International Hardware Group weighs only four pounds and can hold up to 20 lbs. of fertilizer.

With a spreading width of four to eight feet, the unit can be used to disperse grass seed, granular pesticides, herbicides or ice melting materials.

The hopper, spinner and structural foam base are made of polyethylene to lessen the chance of corrosion. The unit also has a lid and molded hip support with an adjustable carrying strap to make use easier.

Rotarul, from Delex Inc., is a digital measuring device which allows a single person the ability to make measurements of up to 1000' with 9990 accuracy. The device can be used to measure hard to reach places and can be used on curved surfaces.

The new PermaBrick 4" x 8" (nominal) 10090 natural earthen brick is strengthened by impregnation with acrylic resin.

Designers can use the brick for flooring in moisture laden andlor high traffic areas where porous common brick would not be practical.

The acrylic is reportedly up to l0 times as wear resistant as regular brick. It is stain resistant, as is the special grout supplied for use with it.

Requiring no special installation techniques, the pre-mixed and colored grout completes the system.

Vent Installation

Kys-Vent from Keyes Fibre is a new formed fiber insulation vent panel designed to protect ventilation and maximize insulation in new and existing buildings. Manufactured from molded fiber, it's formed into a one piece panel measuring 12" x 60" x l"

Two airflow channels run the length of the panel which is scored and slotted at the I ft. mark for use in multiple roof configurations. A free air-flow between the roof and insulation eliminates trapped moisture which occurs as wood fiber products breathe and foam does not.

Underwater Pump

HiLo Industries' new submersible sump pump package, the EZ Pump LoBoy, is ready for the nonprofessional to "pick-up, take with and self-install."

The unit features automatic float operation. A non-clogging strainer and lVz " discharge will handle % " solids. Motor and bearings are permanently lubricated.

It will pump 2580 gallons per hour at 5 'head and I l40gallons per hour at 15' head. The pump comes in two models.

Roberts estimated that total U.S. demand should be 2 billion board feet higher than last year.

"That will still fall nearly 2 billion b.f. short of what we call our normal y€r," he said.

Roberts noted that 1984 housing starts in the West should increase 69,000 units over a year ago. The West is the major market for Western lumber products. "The West was the winner in 1983," he said. "We had an increase of 177,000 units over 1982. That represents an 8690 gain. The South followed with a 5890 increase, or a total increase of 345,000 units."

In addition to the 16.8 billion board feet of other production in the West this year, the Redwood region is expected to produce 1.62 billion feet, Roberts said. Southern U.S. production is expected to reach 7.14 billion while other U.S. producing regions should total 1.40 billion.

Canadian lumber shipped to the U.S. is expected to total 12.40 billion b.f. in 1984.

Total lumber consumption in the U.S. is expected to reach 37.60 billion b.f. in 1984, up from 35.68 billion last year.

New housing should consume 15.84 billion b.f. of lumber, some 4.890 more than in 1983. That expectation was based on the WWPA's forecast of 1.8 million housing starts this year. Last year, L7 million units were built.

Moderate growth is expected in other major markets. New construction (other than homebuilding) is expected to consume 6.31 billion b.f., up from 5.94 billion recorded in 1983. Repair and remodeling should take 8.30 billion, compared to 8.21 billion in 1983. Materials handling should account for 3.60 billion, up from 3.ll billion last year. Lumber exports should reach 1.86 billion, up from 1.76 billion feet last year.

The first stages of a major program to build demand for western lumber products were unveiled at the meeting. The program, intended to develop a potential of 2.5 billion board feet in total annual domestic U.S. demand by its fifth year, will focus heavilY upon a region ranging from Ohio in the East to Texas in the South, including the traditional Midwest and West' The association has budgeted $2.3 million to finance the first year of the effort. Another $379,000including some federal matching fundsis earmarked for export marketing during WWPA's fiscal year, which began April l.

Major first-year energy is assigned to restart many on-going basic WWPA marketing functions eroded during the three-year economic recession the industry suffered beginning in late 1979. But also commencing this spring are three of ten program components plannned to be phased-in by 1986. The three are:
