Home Center Product Awards
Eight of the country's top do-it-yourself products won "Innovator Awards" at the National Home Center Show, held recently in Chicago.
The winners and their products were: American Building Components Co., Inc., Cincinnati, Oh., for "ChimneyGuard II," which fits most flue sizes, and for its associated packaging and merchandising display; Amerock Corp., Rockford, Il., for a message center which mounts under wall cabinets to provide a central location for notes and lists; DAP Inc. and Dow Corning, Tipp City, Oh., paintable Dow Corning Plus Silcone Sealant; Donn Corp. Westlake, Oh., linear metal ceiling system; Fort Steuben Products Division of Buckhorn, Inc., Cincinnati, Oh., I 2 cubic-foot Stor-A-Way lockable security center; Kwikset Division of Emhart Industries, Inc., Anaheim, Ca., lock with adjustable deadlatch; Magrc American Chemical Corp., Cleveland, Oh., Weather Strip Magic, a clear bead of insulation from a selfdispensing can, and for the box in which the can is packaged; The Hardware Tool Dvision of Vermont American, Lincolnton, N.C., "Tool Talk" pegboard merchandising panel designed to explain the do-ityourself benefits of the company's hang-slot router bits.
Woodwork Mfrs. Elect Officers
William Ruddick, general manager of the Door Division, Simpson Timber Co., Seattle, Wa., is the new president of the National Woodwork Manufacturers Association, elected at a meeting at Buena Vista, Fl., Feb. 5-8.
Others elected are Stewart Lemke, senior vice president, Norco Windows, Hawkins, Wi., vice president of the softwood division; William E. Hughes, president, Crown Door Corp., Tirmpa, Fl., vice president of the hardwood division; John J. Stanton, vice president, American Door Dstributors, Inc., re+lected treasurer. John M. Chupik, president, Temple Products, Inc., Temple, Tx., was elected vice president of the stile and rail door division.
New directors are Leland McCullough, Jr., c.e.o., Caddo Door & Veneer Co., Shreveport, La., David A. Follett, vice president, Webb Manufacturing, Conneaut, Oh.; Franz R. Altpeter, president, Profile Extrusions Co., Hastings, Mn., and H.C.A. Hunter, director of sales and marketing, St. Regis Corp., Tbcoma, Wa.
The next meeting will be in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, Aug. 4-8, 1984.

Marketing Merit Recognized
Palmer G. Lewis Co., Inc., Aubum, Wa., and Trus Joist Corp., Boise, Id., received 1984 marketing firm of the year awards at the 5th annual Forest Products Economic Outlook Conference in Portland, Or., March 15.
Some 30 firms were nominated for the annual award sponsored by the Portland Chamber of Commerce and the Western Forestry Center. The award recognizes two companies in different employee size classes which have demonstrated outstanding product innovation, product quality, sales growth and promotion efforts for wood based products produced in the Pacific Northwest.
Palmer G. Lewis received the award for excellence in marketing efforts emphasizing end user education and marketing materials, using a substantial amount of imagination to educate the end user on the use of wood products. Bob Stein, Carl Liliequist and Charles Lauber accepted the award for their firm.
Trus Joist Corp. was recognized for manufacturing engineered beams component systems to customer specifications, demonstrating efficient use of wood and working with building code authorities, engineers and architects to gain more market acceptance for the products. Accepting the award was Charles Robinson, regional sales manager in Portland. He announced that Trus Joist will expand its Oregon operations by building a new plant within the next year and adding over 100 employees.
Panel Production Increase
U.S. structural panel production this year will reach 22 billion square feet (3/8" basis) a 590 increase over 1983, according to a new economic report from the American Plywood Association. The association predicts production of 21.2 billion square feet in 1985.
