Are you ready for underground trees?

al NE of the by-products of all the current \rf excitement about our Bicentennial Year is the pile of predictions that has been accumulating as to the direction of the country, its economy and its people in the third century of this great republic.

One of the predictions we didn't expect to be making, if we expected to be making any at all, was that trees would be produced underground. You know, like under the dirt. Underground. But, perhaps indicative of the mind'blowing surprises that lie ahead for us all, that is exactly where trees are now being successfully grown. Underground.

It seems that 3,000 feet underground in Kellogg, Id., some 4,000 pine tree seedlings are happily growing in one of the ventilation shafts of the 90 year-old Bunker Hill Mine, comforted by a 75o temperature, ideal humidity and insect free air. "Sunlight" is provided by high intensity multivapor quartz lamps (which is not the stuff of which poems are made, but the trees apparently thrive in it).

Company estimates put the cost of producing the containerized trees at $80 per thousand

compared with $300 per thousand in above ground commercial nurseries. Additionally, the trees have shown better survival and growth rates than those grown in outdoor seedbeds and planted with bare roots while dormant.

It is all going so well that the firm is considering an expansion to produce 100,000 trees per year for use in a revegatation project on land affected by mining projects.

Growing trees underground may seem strange and 'onot right" atfirst thought. But then again, why not? Why not try something new if it works as well or better than the usual? The greatness of this country is in some large measure the result of just that freedom of thought that lets minds go ahead to something new, something unusual; to that something that at first seems strange and "not right".

As we listen through this birthday year of other new and startling methods, ideas and predictions of future wonders, let us all restrain the natural impulse to reject the new in favor of the known and comfortable. If we don't grow along with bur trees, it isn't likely that 2076 will see the wonders we predict from 1976 for it.

Our capabilities mean better, faster service for both odd lot and volume buyers. We're at the raw material source,

Tlie association's big push 1br Spring prornotion is Garden Grades of redwood. the lower-cost knot and sapwood containing grades.

A dramatic campaign of advertising, publicity, literaturc and other activities will capitalize on consumers' natural inclination to inrprove and enlarge outdoor living areas.

Dealers should be thinking about outdoor living too, and this year the CRA will bring redwood dealers directly into the promotion program by including a new tag line in all garden grades adverl:rstng: "Bttild it better see your Redwood Dealer Jirst. "

will want to build in time for summer enjoyment.

Dealer sales aids such as statement stuffers, art for local newspaper advertising and art for Yellow Pages promotion are especially designed to promote garden grades, and dealers should use them to take advantage of the larger promotion generated by CRA's program.

Garden grades are an ideal product for the outdoor living market. They are less expensive than the clear or architectural grades of lumber, and their rustic knot texture and the patterns of the sap-containing grades make them a "natural" for all garden and outdoor uses.

The three grades referred to as "garden grades" are Construction Heart, Construction Common and Merchantable. Sapwood containing Construction Common and Merchantableare probably the least known and the most economical. They should move well if properly promoted by dealers.

Construction Common and Merchantable are not decay and rot resistant, and therefore cannot be recommended for in-ground use, but they are ideal for decking, fence boards, trellises, benches, railings and many other above-ground uses. They are readily available from mills and wholesalers and can be a profitable item that should be in every dealer yard.

In Spring planning, the redwood association has recognized the appeal of garden projects for the do-it-yourselfer, an increasingly important source of retail lumber sales.

Much of the CRA garden grades advertising and literature is tailored directly to the do-it-yourself trade.

Ads contain coupon offers of idea books and construction tip sheets that not only suggest redwood designs, but show the customer "how to do it." A wide range of these booklets, pam-

phlets and tip sheets on garden grade projects can be ordered by dealers through their redwood suppliers for use as customer give-aways.

Decks were in the promotion spotlight last year, and based on the single year performance, the booklet '?edwood Decks-Do It!" proved the most popular the association has ever produced. A total of 77,000 booklets were distributed.

GARDEN SHELTERS AND WORK CENTERS

This year, the emphasis is on garden shelters: entertainment. relaxation or garden work centers that provide storage and seating as well as shelter and space. A new l2-page color booklet "Redwood Garden Shelters" gives homeowners both design ideas and the construction and finishing details they will need to build the shelters thev choose.

The growing consumer interest in planting and gardening indicates the need for garden work centers and shelters where potting, plant fertllization, storage and all the other activities of gardening can be accommodated in one spot. Garden shelters can also serve to provide extra "outdoor room" space for entertaining, relaing and for children's play area.

Dealers can capitalize on the CRA's magazine advertising, publicity, local newspaper publicity and literature production by getting themselves, their stocks and their employees ready for Spring selling. CRA will provide a sample kit of sales aids and a promotion aids price list. Address your inquiry to California Redwood Association, 617 Montgomery St., San Francisco, Ca. 94111. Bulk orders for sales aids can then be placed through redwood suppliers who will make special prices on most materials.

Wholesalers may also want to know that a new version of the CRA film. "hoperties and Uses of Redwood" is available through member mills and is ideal for use at sales meetings, dealer seminars and similar types of gatherings. The new film includes an extensive section on garden grades.

Above alf, retail dealers should look at their stocks now and contact their suppliers so that they can be well supplied with redwood garden grades when the consumer demand generated by CRA promotion is felt across the counter.

The whys of redwood's market stability

f f ATURE takes her time to l!produce a redwood tree, and The Pacific Lumber Co. takes its time converting that tree into redwood products at its manufacturing complex in Scotia, Ca.

There are a,number of reasons why a considerable length of production time is required. It is advantageous for wholesalers and retailers to be aware of these and to know how redwood lumler production varies from that of other softwood species. These production requirements affect not only the products but also the marketing practices of redwood lumber.

A mature redwood tree contains a higher percentage of water than any other softwood species-in extreme instances having twice as much water, by weight, as wood. The amount of water content depends on several variables, principally the location of the tree and the particular site growing conditions.

Water distribution in the tree is largest at the base and decreases toward the top. Most all butt logs, and sometimes the next log as well, are "sinkers"-they will not float in water.

Redwood gives up its moisture very slowly. Thus lumber cut from logs with high moisture content must be dried much longer than lumber from logs with lower moisture content.

Story at a Glance

The several reasons why a considerable length of production time is required for redwood; how this affects marketing practices and why it is to retailers and wholesalers' advantage to be aware of these facts.

Over the years Palco has developed three classifications for sorting green redwood lumber which are based on drying characteristics. These classifications are simply heavy moisture content, medium, and light.

The sorting of these moisture content classifications added to the usual sorts by size and grade require green chains much longer than normally used in mills producing other species. Palco's green chains total more than 1,500 feet in length and accommodates around 900 segregations.

UP TO 30 MONTHS

Palco's "Heavy" rough green redwood requires from 12-24 months of air drying, depending on thickness, before the lumber can be kiln dried. "Medium" class requires about one half the air drying time of the "Heavy." "Light" moisture content stock may go directly to the dry kilns without the preliminary air drying.

Most of the upper grades of redwood lumber, which make up over 70% of our old growth redwood come from the lower logs of a tree. Thus these upper grades require the long periods of air drying prior to kiln drying. It can readily be seen that up to 24-30 months can easily pass between the time of logging and the time the finished dried product is shipped.

The people who have visited Palco's Scotia facilities see air drying yards seemingly without end. To take care of the air drying inventories we have in excess of 50 acres of drying yards and can have more than 50 million board feet air drying at any one time.

Having gone to this much care and expense to air season and then kiln dry, Palco sees to it that after kiln drying the lumber is then always under

roof, through all subsequent manufacturing, storing, and loading.

The necessity for the physical and financial capacity to carry large inventories has a beneficial effect on the marketing flexibility of redwood lumber and plywood. Palco has become used to periods of large inventorying during its lO7-year history.

The physical facilities plus an attitude of willingness to carry large inventories allows the company to ride out times of market unrest. During periods of decreased market demand we can stockpile products rather than move them in unfavorable markets. Then when demand picks up again, Palco is in an even better position to supply its customers. Thus our redwood products are not subject to the wide market gyrations sometimes experienced by other species and building materials.

Customers have come to appreciate the market stability of Palco redwood and the availability of a dependable supply.

Forecasting market demands as far ahead as we do, especially in terms of lumber sizes, can be difficult at times.

However, with 107 years of experience. we are able to do what we think is rather an exceptional job. The necessity for carrying large inventories imposed on us by the character of redwood, has an added bonus in the marketing and shipping flexibility thereby provided: this works to our benefit as well as to that of our customers.

The story behind the Bel-Air door

S a manufacturer and distributor, Bel-Air Door Co. is justly proud of the superlatives that have grown up around its operation: among the largest fir door buyers in the United Statesi one of the oldest firms in its field: and undoubtedly one of the best financed door companies in the country.

But in chatting with Samuel Fineman, the energetic president of the firm, it quickly becomes apparent that they are even more proud that the average length of employment for approximately 75 employees in the firm is an astounding 22 years.

When business tapered off for all firms in the door business in 1974-75, only Bel-Air maintained its full complement of workers and staff Remarkably, they have even added people in the last few months.

Top management knows, and the employees know, that it is more than enlightened management that keeps the work force intact. It means some short term sacrifices for the company, but it is an investment in productivity and satisfied workers that has helped produce the continuing growth of the firm.

Bel-Air provides an almost bewildering selection of interior and exterior doors. Included are hand carved entry doors of many sizes, designs, and types: standard domestic stile and rail panel doors: hollow and solid core slab doors. Additionally, they have a full line of pine louvre products: Bel-Air specializes in combination and jalousie doors and units, some types of glass, as well as several other allied remodeling items.

In order to ensure their enormous requirements and a continuing supply of imported hand carved doors, Bel-Air developed a large, well equipped door factory located near Seoul, Korea to manufacture doors of unique design exclusively for Bel-Air's own distribution. They are currently building another new factory outside of the United States to manufacture the right type of doors with high qualitY, at competitive prices.

In addition to manufacturing doors, Bel-Air's Korean operation is totally integrated. It processes logs through its own milling and kiln dry operations. Most of the imported hand crafted doors are completely finished, while a few need additional manufacture at home base in Alhambra, Ca.

An important production area within the block square facility (over 100,000 sq. ft. under cover) is given over to glazing aluminum sash thAt go into Bel-Air's combination doors and Plaza and Mo-Bel-Air combination door units as well as other similar products.

Besides doors, they are a major importer of birch plywood door skins and distribute west of the Rockies for Canada's huge Megantic Mfg. Co. of Lac Megantic, Quebec.

Like other successful companies, they are advertising and merchandising minded. In addition to a continuing schedule of full page advertising in selected major trade magazines, including the use oflavish brochures actually

inserted into the magazines, they staged a four day Grand Opening for their new Plant Showroom in the fall of 1974.

Story at a Glance

The story of Bel-Air Door Company, one of the West's major door manufacturers and distributors headquarters is a block square plant many of its highly-regarded hand carved doors come from its own Korean plant.

A remarkable service for their customers, the showroom is even open to customers' customers (by appointment) so that potential buyers can see the doors they are planning to buy in person. Dealers never need an appointment if they accompany their own customers. This eliminates the possible misunderstanding that could result from an inexperienced person selecting one kind of door from a catalog and thinking he was getting another. Architects, decorators, dealers, and other specifiers and sellers quickly made the showroom a popular place.

The showroom has about 50 doors displayed on plush carpet, and is well lighted to illuminate their best features. Descriptive trade literature is placed about at strategic locations and inside sales advisors stand ready to answer any customer requests.

Bel-Air Door Co. has its own fleet of trucks that it uses to make customer deliveries to five Western states: California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington and Arizona. The company also has a sales office in Honolulu, Hawaii and Burlingame, Ca. It handles national sales through its in-house sales force at its Alhambra headquarters.

The corporate predecessors go back to 1916, when the late Morris Tyre,

(5) Screening operation in the Bel-Air panel production line. Line operates fulltime, every day, year round.

Samuel Fineman's father-in-law, founded a company dealing in the glass business. The firm evolved over the years, moved away from concentrating on glass (though they still do a healthy business in glass) and now concentrates on doors. Starting with the company in early 1954, Fineman learned all phases of the business and in 1959

began a sister company, Alhambra Metal Products, which today does the bulk of its business supplying Bel-Air Door with jalousies and aluminum sash. The dollar value of the Alhambra, Ca., plant is put in excess of one and one-half million dollars with the worth of the machinery being an additional one-half million dollars.

Innovations in production, nrarketing, advertising and promotion have always rnarked the firrn as it has moved deftly through an ever-changing business world. Under the leadership of its able president, the future augers well for this experienced, solidly based exarnple of aggressive American free en terDnse.

Eliminates need for wall bracing and building paper. Or may be applied over any type of wall sheathing. In either case use corrosion-resistant 6d siding nails: hot dipped galvanized (not electro galvanized), stainless steel, or aluminum. Space nails 6" o.c, on panel edges, and 12" on intermediate studs, Drive flush but do not set. lmportant: leave 1/s" space at panel edges and ends; do not butt up tight.

Finishing: The saw-textured surface will hold finishes up to twice as long as many smooth surfaces. A water repellent is applied at the factory, providing ideal surface for natural weathering, staining, painting or bleaching.

STAINS-any desired color can be achieved. Penetrating stains allow grain and texture to show through. Heavy bodied stains tend to conceal the grain but not the texture. Both provide excellent and easily maintained finishes.

NATURAL REDWOOD COLOR-use reddish brown penetrating stains. List of recommended stains is available. Some so-called "Redwood" stains are redder than natural redwood.

WEATHERED REDWOOD APPEARANCE

if driftwood gray is desired on exteriors, no additional finish is necessary. Surface will turn a buckskin color and then a driftwood gray. Additional water repellent applications will retain buckskin color longer. Pigmented bleaching oils will produce immediate driftwood color.

PAINTSstains are best, but if paint is desired, the recommended procedure is to use an oil or alkyd resin primer with an acrylic latex topcoat which is made for use over the orimer.

CAUTIONdo not use varnish on exterior. Do not use shake and shingle type stain or paint.

Uses: Saw-textured surface accents the natral beauty of redwood grain and colorhelps conceal scratches.

Application: Use casing or finishing nails to provide at least 3/n " penetration into framing. Use of redwood colored nails, available at many building material dealers, eliminates nail hole filling.

Finishing: Most any type of interior finishing procedure may be followed, though for best results we recommend stains or clear sealers. I n many instances the factory-appl ied water repellent is the only finish desired.

NEWS tsR[EFS

Widespread unemployment, wood and paper shortages, higher prices and further delays in the housing recovery will result if the Monongahela court decision is applied nationwide, forecasts National_ Forest Products Assn. pres. Eliot Jenkins. .

The controversial decision, which originally applied in only 4 Southeastern states, eliminates clearcutting, essentially limits logging in National Forests ro dead, dying, diseased and overmature ftees .. the decision was based on a narrow interpretation of the 1897 Organic Act.

Now under appeal in the West following its application in the Tongass National Forest in Alaska (which threatens the jobs of 1500 workers), an appeals court decision is expected in early April from the Ninth Circuit Court.

If the Monongahela decision is upheld, timber sales could be severely limited from the National Forests; the Ninth Circuit Court covers the heavily timbered Western states of Oregon, Washington, Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, 'Hatvaii and Aloska.

Quoting the USFS, Eliot Jenkins has said: '"The Monongahela issue could cause the loss of three-fourths of the timber avatlable from the nation's 155 National Forests in fiscal 1976 and a 50% reduction to the end of the century." . morethan one fourth of the softwood saw timber used in the U.S. comes from the National Forests. .

An 11% jump tn btdg. permtts was about the only bright spot in the Jan. housing start figures (latest available) which were down for the 3rd mo. in a row, a

Favorable signs for housing: prinre lending rate now at 6Yz%; Western s&ls posted a record net savings inflow in Jan. Kitchen/Bath Cabinet Push

The National Kitchen Cabinet Association has expanded its efforts to promote certified kitchen and bathroom cabinets in 1976.

In addition to continuing its newspaper publicity program, NKCA will develop broadcast material for television and expand its "Kitchen and Bath Planning" supplement materials for newspaper and dealer advertising managers.

Homeowners are being advised that kitchen and vanity cabinets bearing the NKCA certification seal have been tested for compliance with the A 161.1 standard of the American National Standards Institute. This standard establishes minimum construction and performance criteria to assure satisfactory performance of the cabinets under conditions normally found in kitchens and bathrooms.

Composite panel products

A house built in part with new composite panel products that presage a conservation-minded revolution in construction materials has been shown to government officials, code authorities and area builders near Gaithersburg, Md.

The four-bedroom, three-bathroom home is in an area of first class resi

dential construction, with homes in the $70,000 - $85,000 price range.

Use of the composite panels was arranged by the American Plywood Association, Tacoma, Wa., in cooperation with the builder, to demonstrate that these new materials can perform acceptably in combination with conventional materials.

it's your inventory

The demonstration is jointly sponsored by the U. S. Forest Service, HUD and APA.

Composite panels are combinations of veneer and reconstituted structural cores. The aim is to combine relatively low-value wood materials from logging and milling waste with veneer to produce higher-value building materials utilizing up to 90% of the log.

New composite building materials for both panels and studs offer the potential of greatly improving the supply of plywood and lumber for residential construction by substantially increasing the amount of usable wood products derived from a tree.

The 2,860 sq. ft. house has a floor of 314" composite underlayment panels glued to joists 24" o.c. The roof sheathing is of 7/16" composite panels attached to rafters 24" o.c.

Both floor and roof panels are being produced in Idaho by Potlatch Corp., which is playing a leading role in pioneering introduction of composite panels. The new products have been extensively tested by APA. Research has established that the composites can be used interchangeably with conventional plywood sheathing and underlayment.

Another demonstration house featuring both composite panels and Com-Ply studs was recently completed in Vancouver, Wa.

New G-P Marketlng Program

Georgia-Pacific Corp.'s new 1976 marketing program will emphasize a single source supply with the addition of new product lines to its extensive selection of wood and gypsum building materials at most company wholesale distribution outlets.

New product lines to be distributed include fiberglass batten insulation: resilient vinyl asbestos floor tile for industrial and institutional as well as residential flooring: roofing: brick; nails, and even polyethylene film. Ceiling tile, kitchen cabinets and carpeting are also being added. Most are already available at G-P local warehouses from coast to coast with selections seared to local markets.

Hlgher Lumber Prlces?

Sen. Jennings Randolph (D-W. Va.) has introduced a bill to regulate Federal timber management and reform management practices on National Forests to end the many disputes and controversies resulting from the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals decision in the Monongahela case.

Industry estimates say the bill would reduce the current level of timber growth and harvest on the National Forests by about 60% which would drastically hike lumber prices.

f f |HAT next Uncle?

UU fnis past year has been a reflection of misery as we constantly duck the barrage of'legislative missiles being hurled at us.

If the government is attempting to get us to cry Uncle, I've been doing it for quite a while with no effect. Although I may sound pessimistic I must admit that as an industry we accomplished a lot in the past year.

Five Western states merged their common interests and have formed the Western States Lumbermen's Council. Many have received bulletins from this group. You will be hearing a lot more since the associations are on the right track to providing dealers more and better information and programs as a result of joint efforts.

Through our National Association we have succeeded in holding back passage of Consumer Protection Agency legislation, thwarted 1975 attempts at Common Situs

picketing, have established a national housing policy, have been recognized by the federal regulatory agencies as a group that has a vast wealth of knowledge that can be tapped for improvement of the nation's economy, and have even had a message from President Ford congratulating our National on many years of service to the industry and the nation.

Our own local efforts have been outstanding. We have established a permanent association headquarters in which we have already had several meetings. Our move to the new headquarters has already proven a savings in rent versus maintenance and operation of the facility.

We have been effective with CAL/OSHA. Our association members have not suffered the depth of inspections that others have because of our excellent safety programs and the dealer's compliance with the regs.

The fine work done by the safety representatives of our firms, for those of us participating with the association in the program, cannot go unnoticed. As a group we have managed to reduce our loss ratio to 4I% which is a great reduction over what we had three years ago. It was unfortunate that our workmen's compensation dividend did not match the great efforts made by each of you. As you are aware we have changed workmen's compensation carriers and hope to do better next year.

As I peek ahead in 1976 the same confusion still exists, only now it is clouded in a mist of election propaganda. There will be bits and pieces of legislation passed only for the purpose of vote getting. Most of our unwanted legislation that we fought hard against in 1975 will be back to haunt us again. Housing starts will not increase much above the 1.4 million mark so that means that we need to stay with the walk-in customer and arrange our operation to accommodate him/her.

THE SCUTHLANE

THE ides of March are upon us.

I And with them the improved market which everyone has been awaiting. No mention was made of it being a great market, just improved.

An improved market means greater purchasing by the retailer, more goods and services flowing in the channels of distribution.

Before the flow can begin, the customer has to make a decision to buy. He buys from the retailer that can offer the best price and the best service.

What does that service consist of?

Was the sales person courteous, knowledgeable about the product and its potential use? Were the credit terms, if applicable, suitable to the customers needs? Could delivery of the purchased material be made to meet the time limitation established by the customer? Was the merchandise available in the quantities and sizes needed by the customer? Did he thoroughly understand its application to his specific job? Were there provisions for returning any unused portion of the stock ordered, other than special items that may have been required? Were the warranty provisions explained or were they there for the customer to observe? Above all. did

the customer get the distinct impression that Mr. Retailer really enjoyed having him come in and make inquiries that ultimately lead to the purchase? Or was it a necessity purchase and the customer would never again be a customer, at least not in that particular store.

So, nothing really happens until somebody sells something. That retail sales person is a very important part of the sales-distribution process. He is the key. Unless he can create in the prospect a desire to buy, nothing really happens. That flow of material in the pipeline of distribution gets very sluggish or stops completely.

Just as the consumer can decide whether he wants to buy at a particular store, so can the retailer decide which manufacturer he wants to represent. Will it be you? It can be, but not unless your sales representatives, your entire image creates in the retailer a desire to buy.

Have a good day-Create in your prospect a desire to buy. Don't sell him.

And by the same logic, the Montana delegation deserves to be apprised of the position of the industry, since they exhibited no deviation from theline of union position support. Whether as the same individuals they will still be on hand when the legislation resurfaces (and return it will, as it has periodically since l95l) it is necessary that our voice be heard and our interest and needs recognized. August Vogelsang Retlres

Among the ranks of the newly retired is August Vogelsang, a wellknown retail lumberman who recently conrpleted a 52 year career upon his retirement from Hull Lurnber Co., Venice, Ca. He joined Hull in 1956, working in various areas of the business, mainly in sales.

Previously he had been employed as manager at the Ocean Park Yard of theold Patten-Blinn Lutnber Co., one of the.major firms in the lurnber industry of southern California in the early decades of this century.

T0ASTING the golden days of retirement ahead for August Vogelsang are (l'r) Larry Henderson, retired from Ward & Harrington; Nelson Sembach of Inland Lumber; Vogelsang, and George Patten, whose family owned the old Patten-Blinn Lumber Co.

His employment with Patten-Blinn had come about in an unusual waY. Born in Dusseldorf, GermanY, he served in the German army in WWI, was wounded and subsequently moved to Japan where he worked for several years in his uncle's mill and exporting business.I* still speaks some Japanese, even today. On a trip home in 1925 on the old President Polk steamship he became acquainted with Henry S. Patten, who was on a world tour with his family.

A year or so later he wrote Henry Patten inquiring about a job opening. He came over, started out in the yard and worked his way up to yard manager. A stern task master and a knowledgable lumberman, he was instrumental in the education and training of many of the area's lumbermen.

A batchelor, he travels yearly to Dusseldorf, Germany, where he helped start a Rotary Club. He has 34 years of perfect attendance in Rotary.

Merwin Manufacturing claims its new 321 brand showerhead will, at the minimum, deliver a satisfying shower while it pays for itself in less than a year. at 100 psi for old fashioned showerheads, the firm said.

Using these figures, one showerwith the 321 showerhead (lasting an average of seven minutes) uses only 14 gallons of water compared to the 70 or more gallons of water used in the same period of time by other showerheads.

The reduced use of water provides a list of advantages claimed by the firm that reads like a domino effect: reduces water bill. reduces water heating bill, reduces water softener cycle time, reduces need for large (or new) water heater, reduces need for new system due to low line pressure, reduces sewer fees based on water usage, reduces load on septic tank systems, and reduces running time of private well pumps.

NO RECORD?

David Cutler, editor-publisher

The Merchant Magazine

4500 Campus Drive

Newport Beach, Calif .9266O

Dear Mr. Cutler:

We noticed an article on page 44 of your December, 1975, edition of The Merchant Magazine and would like to correct your statement that Publishers Forest Products transported, in September, the single largest lumber shipment ever loaded onto a single rail car.

Bohemia shipped a car from our Saginaw Plant on June 5, 1964, of 100.640' loaded on a 60' flatcar which weighed l8'l ,516 lbs. and shipped to the American Distributing

Company, Modesto, Ca. The ibotage difference of 20,240' represents approximately 2O7o more footage on our car than what Publishers claimed they shipped on their car. We have shipped other cars that were in excess of 80,000'BM.

Enclosed you will find a copy of a letter from the Southern Pacific Transportation Company to back up our statement.

We felt you would want to straighten out your readers and subscribers. Best Regards, Keith

Inc.

Leery of such superlatives, we said in our coverage: "Publishers Forest hoducts tops off what it claims to be the largest. ." We checked upon receipt of your letterwith Publishers, but have yet to receive further claification. -ed.

The following letter was recently received by Ed Fountain, Sr. of the Ed Fountain Lumber Co., LosAngeles. Because of the significance of the views expressed we are reprinting it here. -ed.

FREE ENTERPRISE ESSENTIAL

Many thanks for your recent letter and the vote of confidence it contained. I'm always encouraged to learn that knowledgeable members of the business community share my views.

As you know, I feel the real strength of our country lies in our free enterprise system. Our government's well-intentioned social largess, coupled with the economic illiteracy of many citizens, has mortgaged the future of generations of Americans and threatens our economic survival. What we face today is the classic choice between socialism and freedom.

You have my assurance, Mr. Fountain, that I will continue to fight forcefully for those policies I know to be essential for a strong and healthy economy. Once again, my thanks for writing.

Warm regards

Sincerely, William E. Simon

The Secretary Of The Treasury Washington, D.C.20220

OBITUARIES

FRED LAMON

Fred R. Lamon, a prominent Northern California lumberman, died February 16. He was 87.

Born in Watertown, N.Y., he attended school at Colgate and at the Biltmore School of Forestry headquartered at the Vanderbilt estate in North Carolina and the Black Forest in Germany.

Mr. Lamon's active lumber career spanning over 50 years included employment at the Coos Bay Lumber Co., The Pacific Lumber Co. and the Wendling Nathan Lumber Co. of San Francisco.

In 1936 he and Gerald F. Bonnington organized the Lamon Bonnington Co. of San Francisco which was dissolved in 1952.

The Lamon Lumber Co. of San Francisco was founded as a partnership of Fred and Ralph Lamon in t952.

Thepast 15 years of Fred's life were largely devoted to travel to every part of the globe. He was a 50 year resident of Berkeley.

He is survived by his widow Frances; a son; three daughters; l0 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

S. M. HOYT

Sherman M. Hoyt, 87, owner of S. M. Hoyt Lumber Co., Ontario, Ca. died January 2,1976.

Mr. Hoyt started in the lumber industry 65 years ago in San Bonito, Tx. In l9l3 he went to Kansas City and worked for the Forest Lumber Co. He moved to California in the early 1920s and worked for the Woods Beckman Lumber Co., Beverly Hills, and in 1923 he went to work for Heineke Lumber Co., Ontario, Ca.

Along with Paul Roof in 1926, Mr. Hoyt started the Hoyt-Roof Lumber Co. A year later Mr. Roof passed away and the company then became the S. M. Hoyt Lumber Co.

He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Marion Nelson.

(Continued fron Page 27 )

This results from: (l) the bill's description of the "mature" tree, and (2) the requirement of a non-declining yield of timber for each management area of 500,000 acres or less. The first requirement means that trees would be held for decades beyond the current planned harvest date, and the second would reduce opportunities for recognizing age class distributions essential for maintaining an orderly timber harvest rate.
