August Vogelsang Retlres
Among the ranks of the newly retired is August Vogelsang, a wellknown retail lumberman who recently conrpleted a 52 year career upon his retirement from Hull Lurnber Co., Venice, Ca. He joined Hull in 1956, working in various areas of the business, mainly in sales.
Previously he had been employed as manager at the Ocean Park Yard of theold Patten-Blinn Lutnber Co., one of the.major firms in the lurnber industry of southern California in the early decades of this century.
T0ASTING the golden days of retirement ahead for August Vogelsang are (l'r) Larry Henderson, retired from Ward & Harrington; Nelson Sembach of Inland Lumber; Vogelsang, and George Patten, whose family owned the old Patten-Blinn Lumber Co.
His employment with Patten-Blinn had come about in an unusual waY. Born in Dusseldorf, GermanY, he served in the German army in WWI, was wounded and subsequently moved to Japan where he worked for several years in his uncle's mill and exporting business.I* still speaks some Japanese, even today. On a trip home in 1925 on the old President Polk steamship he became acquainted with Henry S. Patten, who was on a world tour with his family.
A year or so later he wrote Henry Patten inquiring about a job opening. He came over, started out in the yard and worked his way up to yard manager. A stern task master and a knowledgable lumberman, he was instrumental in the education and training of many of the area's lumbermen.
A batchelor, he travels yearly to Dusseldorf, Germany, where he helped start a Rotary Club. He has 34 years of perfect attendance in Rotary.
