History A Level Overview
In A Level History students will study a wide chronological period covering the Crusades, 1071—1204 and Britain 1951—2007, combining both Medieval and Modern history. Students will also complete a piece of coursework worth 20% of the final grade, on either the Wars of the Roses in the Fifteenth Century, or Irish Nationalism 1798-1922 respectively. All these periods are momentous moments in history. Students will have the opportunity to learn British, European and World history. Students sit two 2 hour 30 minute papers at the end of Year 13. A commitment to wider reading is expected and a good grasp of essay writing skills will be expected and nurtured. History is an exciting option due to the planned trips; York, London, France and even the USA are viable opportunities. Visiting lecturers from university, class debates, and a real connection to current events makes this subject a relevant option at A Level. This is a very useful qualification widely respected by universities. The department has a strong tradition of helping students gain places at the top universities, including Oxford and Cambridge. Apart from being very interesting, the study of History compliments most other A Level subjects. You will be able to understand what motivates people, what makes them act in the way that they do and gain a thorough understanding of the world around you. You will be able to gather information, interpret and analyse it and gain confidence to articulate your thoughts in writing and verbal debate.
