Southwest Vida is extremely excited to share that we have a new office location on Morrison Road ! We will use the office space for Southwest Vida, Community Pearl and Southwest Denver Communities that Care meetings along with other community activities.

We want to give a big THANK YOU to Todd Young who has been working for Bio-techne for 16 yrs. His family and him enjoy giving back to the community. They take part in several fundraisers and Non profit events. Todd donated tables, desks and computers to Southwest Vida. It was a huge help to get started at our new location.

Denver Public School’s Board of Education voted to close STRIVE PREP- Kepner, a charter school in the Westwood neighborhood, at the end of June.

The board voted 6-1 to not renew the school’s contract and one of the biggest concerns with the Kepner closing was that there was not enough community involvement around the decision.

The Southwest Vida Youth Team applied for the Communities Active Living Coalition (CALC) Grant to be able to give 17 bikes to youth between the ages of 14-20 in Southwest Denver The participants were asked to explain how they could use a bike and We were able to give helmets and bike supplies by collaborating with Missy who works in the Denver Health Trauma and Injury Prevention Helmet Safety Program

HOW TO MAKE GORDITAS CÓMO HACER GORDITAS!

INGRIDENTS/INGREDIENTES

1 cup masa harina (instant corn masa mix)

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon shortening

1 cup hot water

1 Tsp of Baking Powder

(Optional)1 Cup Oil

1 taza de masa harina (mezcla instantánea de masa de maíz)

1 taza de harina para todo uso

1 cucharadita de sal

1 cucharada de manteca

1 taza de agua caliente

1 cucharadita de polvo de hornear

(Opcional) 1 taza de aceite

STEPS PASOS

Add In your dry ingredients to a bowl and mix.

After well combined add hot water until it is no longer sticky. Leave to rest for 15 minutes and preheat your your Comal/griddle and(Optional Oil) heat up a large skillet After 15 minutes have passed grab your dough and start rolling out balls. Put them on the comal and press down, on both sides until it is evenly cooked . If you are using oil as well, carefull put the gorditas inside the oil until nice and puffed up.

Put them aside to drain and then stuff it with your favorite fillings.

Participatory Budgeting - New Construction For Denver

In 2022, Michael B. Hancock decided to do participatory budgeting (pb). Denver's most vulnerable and underserved residents voted on these projects below to improve the City of Denver including some of the Southwest Denver Neighborhoods

CITYWIDE BALLOT:

$400,000- One of the projects is to build wider and more accessible sidewalks in Athmar park

$200,000- Build tiny homes for people that are experiencing homelessness

$225,000- Up to 3 shower trailers for people who are homeless

$175,000- Community gardens at the tiny homes they’re building. Also a garden in the Columbine apartments. The gardens in Ruby Hill and Baker are also being renovated

Right now, black boys and girls can see themselves in Marvel movies now instead of just looking at Captain America, producers have helped create a black experience and have youth see themselves in our media and our movies and real life as well

Every year on March 31st, the state of Colorado and 9 other states celebrate this day to commemorate the birth and legacy of Cesar Chavez.

Cesar Chavez was a civil rights activist and labor leader who advocated for labor rights for agricultural workers

One of his most notable achievements was leading the Delano grape strike with Filipino and Mexican farmworkers and helping to create the United Farm Workers (UFW) labor union In his protests, he emphasized non-violent tactics which he took inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi.

According to "The Denver Post" Since December 2022, Denver has assisted more than 3,800 migrants who arrived in the city, many coming from Central and South America In order to receive the newcomers entering the city, many recreation centers have been converted into emergency shelters Governor Jared Polis assisted in sending migrants to larger cities such as Chicago and New York; however, the mayors of those cities are urging Jared Polis to join them in pressuring the Federal Government to find a long-term solution for asylum seekers. In order to help these migrants, Governor Jared Polis is teaming up with the Rose Community Foundation to give aid to new incoming migrants in Denver. Many people are displaced due to economic opportunity, persecution, and other factors. Here is how you can help!

I go to Denver School of Innovation and Sustainable Design (DSISD) and I work at Mathematics and Science Leadership Academy as an apprenticeship teacher and I also take college classes at Community College of Denver I'm also a part of the SouthWest Vida youth group! Some info about me is that I like to try out new things, I have two cats named Nala and Simba. Being part of Southwest Vida has taught me a lot throughout the time I've been with them and overall it's a wonderful organization. I also use programs such as VOCALOID, SynthesizerV, and UTAU.

Hola mi nombre es Ricardo Ruiz yo soy de Apatzingan, Michoacan Mex. Me mude a los Estados Unidos hace 24 años con la intención de buscar una mejor vida, y un lugar donde vivir. Ya que en mi ciudad como en todo el país, la economía no es tan buena como la de este país. Gracias a dios he podido encontrar a la mejor esposa con la que ya tenemos tres hijas juntos. Jazmine de 15 años, Jacqueline de 12 años, y Johanna de 9 años. Me encanta vivir en Denver, pero más me encanta salir a pasear, y ver las montañas. Unas cosas que me gusta hacer es pescar, y jugar volleyball en el parque con mi familia. Pero la cosa que más me encanta es poder participar en mi comunidad como un padre buscando un futuro mejor para mis hijas, y las siguientes generaciones. Espero que con mi participación Denver se haga un lugar más seguro y más accesible para todos.

Hello my name is Ricardo Ruiz I am from Apatzingan Michoacan Mex. I moved to the United States 24 years ago with the intention of looking for a better life, and a place to live. Since in my city as in the whole country, the economy is not as good as this country. Thank God, I have been able to find the best wife with whom we already have three daughters together. Jazmine, 15 years old, Jacqueline, 12 years old, and Johanna 9 years old. I love living in Denver, but I love going for walks and seeing the mountains even more. Some things I like to do are go fishing, and play volleyball in the park with my family. But the thing that I love the most is being able to participate in my community as a parent looking for a better future for my daughters, the current generations , and the following generations. I hope that with my participation, Denver becomes a safer and more accessible place for all.
