Last summer we received over 600 youth responses to our survey distributed in Southwest Denver We surveyed youth ages 14-24 years old and asked them a range of questions about gun safety, community, and parent involvement These survey results will aid us in identifying what youth want

One risk factor that we received from our survey is the amount of access to firearms and contact with guns within the Southwest Denver youth As youth, we know that there need to be activities for youth to get involved in that will positively impact their life.

This month is important to the LGBTQ+ people because it celebrates identity, raises awareness of LGBTQ+ issues, and promotes equality and acceptance Pride Month plays a role in reducing the stigma and discrimination faced by LGBTQ+ people It provides a platform for people to share their stories and experiences openly

People can be really rude because they won't accept the way you are, will look at you weird on how you identify yourself, but some will be accepting

Everyone has a passion. My passion is dancing, and I’ve always loved dancing. I've always wanted to join a folkloric dance group but never had the opportunity until 3 years ago

I decided to get out of my comfort zone and join Sangre De Mexico, which is owned by Julio Garcia At first, it was hard since I didn’t know any of the steps or the people I felt so alone and different since everyone there had been dancing for over a year Fortunately, with time, I was able to learn the steps and have the opportunity to travel to Las Vegas and Chicago

It is an amazing feeling to get out of your comfort zone and discover your passion. I have been dancing for about three years now It has helped me get through so many challenges This is my passion, now it's time to discover yours!

Aalycia Rodriguez

Aalycia Rodriguez is a 20-year-old artist who graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School and is an awesome local artist

When asked to do the artwork for the Cinco de Mayo Festival, she got inspiration from all the women in her life. She says that usually women are put in the background but in reality, women have been a part of our lives and they don't get recognition

Her goal as an artist is to give kids confidence and feel self-love through art just like she has

JUNETEENTH

History

Juneteenth is the annual celebration that occurs every June 19th to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. It is regularly celebrated (as a city and federal holiday) because it marks the day of the end of black bondage in the United States The history is used as a symbol to continue to fight for equality It's also a promise to African Americans that they’ll be equal citizens in the United States (14th amendment).

How it's Celebrated:

The way Juneteenth is celebrated is mainly through prayers and religious services Extended (fun) activities that people practice are family gatherings, picnics, festivals, food, music, etc.

Summer of Adventure

The Denver Public Libraries program, "Summer of Adventure," encourages all kids from birth to the 12th grade to read, make and explore throughout the summer.

You can register online or you could go to your local library and register there. You will have to complete 15 assignments in order to pick up all your prizes.

Anxiety can also be considered to be a disorder. When it is considered a disorder, it can mean that it does not go away and can get worse over time The symptoms can interfere with daily activities such as job performance, schoolwork, and relationships

In a recent study done by the KFF organization, they stated, “29.8% of adults in Colorado reported symptoms of anxiety and/or depressive disorder, compared to 32.3% of adults in the US ”

Colorado Universal Preschool (UPK) is a program from the Colorado Department of Early Childhood that provides up to half-day preschool for all of Colorado in the year before kindergarten It is not a first-come, first-served program Applicants are matched to the program in rounds.

CAMPAIGN

Southwest Vida is leading a Gun Violence Prevention Campaign starting in June

According to the Youth Survey results we took last year, gun violence and access to firearms were one of the biggest risk factors in our community.

This campaign is a collaboration by community members of various backgrounds, adults, parents, and youth Community members like Maricendi and Donna help the youth by providing their unique lens and experiences to help guide the youth Along with the billboard, we will have other ways of spreading our message in the community by designing yard signs and stickers, and even talking to news reporters from both English and Spanish news channels.

During our campaign, we will be going around the community and having youth and adults sign safety pledges. These pledges will encourage youth to have a safe summer and encourage youth as well as adults to be more responsible when in contact with firearms

GUN VIOLENCE PREVENTION CONTINUED...

The month of June is national gun violence awareness month Specifically June 2nd - 4th are national gun violence awareness day According to the Sandy Hook Promise Organization, guns are the leading cause of death among American children One out of 10 gun deaths are age 19 or younger The Pew Research Center provides an insight on the most recent data on gun violence, which shares that more Americans died of gun related injuries in 2021 than any other year on record Around 48,830 people died from gun related injuries that year The month of June aims to bring awareness to this growing issue

Why Orange?

On January 21, 2013 Hadiya Pendleton (15 years old) marched in President Obama’s second inaugural parade. A week later Hadiya was shot and killed by a bullet on a playground in Chicago Hadiya’s friends commemorated her by wearing orange, a color that hunters wear to protect themselves This is now observed every June to honor Hadiya and the more than 40,000 people who are killed because of guns

Denver Safe City Youth Summit

The Summit’s mission is to create a safe forum for youth to discuss, address, and implement an ongoing youth partnership within the community. Southwest Vida had a table, where youth were signing our gun violence prevention pledges. We also participated and attended workshops such as substance misuse and violence prevention roundtables and implicit bias. There were youth ranging from 13 to 18 years old. The youth summit is held yearly in Denver.

Kamusta! My name is Donna Gabiana I have two sons and a daughter Tristan and Tyler are a part of Southwest Vida I work at DSST College View HS I immigrated alone to the US from the Philippines about 12 years ago and moved the rest of my family here a year later When living in the Philippines, I was a high school math teacher often exceeding 50 students per class

I have a green thumb, my family often complains that the house looks like a jungle Gardening is my art, and the soil is my canvas. I paint my yard with flowers and believe it gives the dog walkers, elementary students, and my neighbors positive energy when they see my creations. I love it when my neighbors ask to pick flowers to give to their loved ones and some neighbors even give me coffee grounds to encourage more plant growth. Right now I am helping my son Tristan with Southwest Vida's Gun Violence Prevention campaign by helping design the billboard and creating safety pledges for the youth But when I'm not busy with that, you'll catch me watering my plants!

Youth Leadership Award

Hello! My name is Camila Hernandez, I am a part of the Southwest Vida youth team I am also currently a freshman at the University of Colorado Denver I joined Southwest Vida in October of 2022, and one of my favorite things about working here is being able to work with other young people who are passionate and have fun with what they do Outside of working at Southwest Vida, I love playing volleyball; I’ve been playing for about nine years. I’ve played competitively and I frequently play for fun with my friends too. Another activity I enjoy doing is baking for my family and friends. I find it relaxing and it gives me a sense of achievement. My current goal is to balance school, work, my social life, and exercise more often during the week.

Mi nombre es Camila Hernandez, soy parte del equipo de jóvenes en Southwest Vida También soy un estudiante de primer año en la Universidad de Colorado Denver en el centro Me uní a Southwest Vida en Octubre del 2022, y unas de mis cosas favoritas de trabajar aquí es poder trabajar con otros jóvenes apasionados que se divierten con lo que hacen en esta organización. Aparte de trabajar en Southwest Vida, me encanta jugar voleibol; llevo unos 9 años jugando. He jugado competitivamente y también juego frecuentemente para divertirme con mis amigos. Otra actividad que disfruto hacer es hornear para mi familia y amigos. Lo encuentro relajante y me da una sensación de logro. Mi meta ahorita es balancear con la escuela, el trabajo, mi vida social, y hacer ejercicio durante la semana.
