SWV SUMMER YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM!!! ¡¡¡PROGRAMA DE EMPLEO JUVENIL DE VERANO SWV!!! by Jazmine Ruiz This summer we hosted our first summer youth program, and it's safe to say that everyone who was a part of it really enjoyed it. We did many different things like yoga, tabled many events, planned our open house, learned basic job skills, and many more things! As one of the summer youth in the program, my favorite event that we did was the open house event. We hope to continue this new tradition next summer and the summers that await us! Thank you to everyone who supported us!

Este verano organizamos nuestro primer programa juvenil de verano y podemos decir con seguridad que todos los que participaron lo disfrutaron mucho. Hicimos muchas cosas diferentes como yoga, organizamos muchos eventos, planificamos nuestra jornada de puertas abiertas, aprendimos habilidades básicas de trabajo y ¡muchas cosas más! Mes de la Herencia Hispana

by Suly toribio Mexican Heritage Month is from September 15 to October 15. It is a 30-day period that recognizes Hispanics and Latin-Americans’ hard work that contributes to U.S. culture.

It has been celebrated nationwide with festivals, fireworks, and various shows. The cry of Mexico is celebrated at the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, which was started by Miguel Hidalgo. The cry of Mexico represents passion, independence, and pride.

El Mes de la Herencia Mexicana es del 15 de septiembre al 15 de octubre. Es un período de 30 días que reconoce el arduo trabajo de los hispanos y latinoamericanos que contribuye a la cultura estadounidense. Se ha celebrado en todo el país con festivales, fuegos artificiales y diversos espectáculos.

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) / AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome)

HIV is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system. If HIV is not treated, it can lead to AIDS. A weakened immune system can make a person more susceptible to diseases. There are also no symptoms.

Causes

HIV can be contracted through anal or vaginal sex, sharing needles, syringes, and other drug injection equipment.

Get tested regularly (every 3 months) or after every new sexual partner.

Always use protection.

Condoms are most effective in preventing HIV and other STI’s.

Never have more than 1 sexual partner at a time.

HIV in Youth

According to the CDC, 20% of HIV diagnoses come from youth between the age of 13-24.

Treatment There is no cure. However, with proper medical care the progression can be slowed. HIV can be controlled if caught within 6 months.

If you circled the trees, you are correct. The first picture was taken on 8th and York, and the second picture was taken on Knox and Alaska, which is located in Westwood. While driving through these two communities, you will notice a few differences. You or your child might say, “Wow it looks so pretty over here.” or “Wow there’s so many trees covering this street; it looks amazing.” Having a tree not only makes our community look beautiful, but it invites wild life.

There are a few reasons as to why people cut down their trees: maintenance, problems with destroying their houses when they grow to big, or cost of watering greenery. I understand why people might cut their trees down for these reasons but there are solutions to these problems. One solution is planting native trees. Trees native to Colorado don’t require a lot of water since many of them are drought-tolerant, meaning they can withstand a long period of time without water. Perhaps you might be worried about the cost of buying a tree and whether it is an adequate place or not for the tree. Some resources can help you out with that. For example, Be A Smart Ash provides free trees to plant on public property, if you are eligible. The Park People is also another organization that can offer free to low-cost trees to plant in your yard. These resources are a great way to help us beautify and keep our environment clean.

1. Caramel Magic: Heat 1 cup of sugar and 1/4 cup of water in a saucepan. Let it become a gorgeous amber caramel, then pour it into a Bundt pan and let it cool.

4. Layer it Up: Pour the flan mix into the Bundt pan over the caramel.

Then, gently add the cake mix on top. They'll switch places during baking, creating the magic!

Redlining is Hurting Southwest Denver Residents

Southwest Denver is one of the most affected areas in Denver to experience inequities, especially when it comes to the effects of redlining. Redlining is a method used by government housing agencies to determine whether someone is eligible for a housing loan. Those in red areas and in grades C or D get declined most of the time due to the geographical area they live in. Barnum and Villa Park being some of the most affected areas in SW Denver.

It is important to acknowledge the effects of redlining as it has historically and currently impacts residents in Southwest Denver. Most people who live in these areas are low income and people of color, leading to inequalities amongst these socioeconomic groups. Historical patterns of residential segregation have become apparent as redlining has predominantly affected Black, Hispanic, and other minority populations in urban communities.

Redlining as a whole not only affects one’s ability to get a housing loan; it also affects the resources and quality of life for residents within those areas. For example, redlining affects the quality and access to healthcare, education, food resources, economic stability, housing, and environmental structures such as sidewalks and bike lanes.

What Is Fentanyl And What Does It Do?

Fentanyl is a strong acting drug. When taken, it causes euphoria, pain relief, drowsiness and slows breathing. Fentanyl goes through your system and it reduces blood oxygen which will cause damage to the brain, But that isn't the only bad thing that fentanyl does, when a lot is taken it will immediately start to cause breathing problems and it can shortly kill you, leading to a drug overdose.

However, there is something that might help prevent a full overdose.

Each year people die from fentanyl and each year the deaths from fentanyl increase by at least more than 25%. In 2020 there were nearly 70,000 deaths due to fentanyl. In 2021, that number increased by nearly 30%. Lastly, in 2022 more than 109,000 people died and it broke a new nationwide record of fentanyl deaths.

Community Recognition My name is Sonia Schwartz, and I work for Denver Tennis Park as their Outreach Manager. I am married with two grown children and reside in Arvada. I’m originally from Texas/New Mexico. My family moved to Denver when I was 12. I grew up in SW Denver attending Kepner Middle and graduated from Lincoln High. I attended NMSU and majored in Criminal Justice.

After a career in law enforcement, I ran tennis programs for parks and recreation in Jeffco and Denver. With the pandemic and the violence provoked by George Floyd's death, I felt compelled to find a way to make a positive impact on youth again. One thing led to another, and I landed at Denver Tennis Park. Their mission and vision are to bring equity to tennis by providing access and affordability to underserved communities and minorities. For the last two years, I have had the privilege of being in the Montbello/Northfield and SW Denver area as a community liaison.

Estoy casada, tengo dos hijos mayores y resido en Arvada. Soy originaria de Texas/Nuevo México. Mi familia se mudó a Denver cuando yo tenía 12 años. Crecí en el suroeste de Denver, asistí a Kepner Middle y me gradué de Lincoln High. Asistí a NMSU y me especialicé en Justicia Penal. Después de una carrera en el cumplimiento de la ley, dirigí programas de tenis para parques y recreación en Jeffco y Denver. Con la pandemia y la violencia provocada por la muerte de George Floyd, me sentí obligada a encontrar una manera de volver a generar un impacto positivo en la juventud. Una cosa llevó a la otra y aterricé en el Denver Tennis Park.

Su misión y visión son aportar equidad al tenis brindando acceso y asequibilidad a comunidades y minorías desatendidas. Durante los últimos dos años, he tenido el privilegio de estar en el área de Montbello/Northfield y SW Denver como enlace comunitario.

This edition, we are honoring our 5 amazing youth who participated in our first Southwest Vida Summer Youth Employment Program. They completed 8 weeks of workshops created and hosted by our Creative Leader, Nicole Guzman, ranging from how to conduct a good interview and learning basic job skills to making their own business cards. Through creativity, practice, and commitment, each of these youth continue to accomplish so much at Southwest Vida and represent the power that youth behold.

En esta edición, honramos a nuestros 5 increíbles jóvenes que participaron en nuestro primer Programa de Empleo Juvenil de Verano Southwest Vida. Completaron 8 semanas de talleres creados y organizados por nuestra líder creativa, Nicole Guzmán, que abarcaron desde cómo realizar una buena entrevista y aprender habilidades laborales básicas hasta cómo hacer sus propias tarjetas de presentación. A través de la creatividad, la práctica y el compromiso, cada uno de estos jóvenes continúa logrando mucho en Southwest Vida y representa el poder que la juventud contempla.
