THE STORY BEHIND THE IBIZA LEGEND / LA HISTORIA DETRÁS DE LA LEYENDA DE IBIZA 1. Hola Tony, el libro sobre su increíble vida, Mr Pikes, ya está a la venta. Como sabemos, su nombre está vinculado para siempre con el legendario Hotel Pikes. ¿Cómo se topó con esta ‘finca’ abandonada? ¡Estaba buscando un lugar con aire fresco en los 70! Todos los apartamentos que se estaban construyendo no tenían sol, el agente inmobiliario dijo: “Mire Sr. Pike si se sienta en esta terraza de 2 a 4 de la tarde tendrá sol”. Eso no era lo que buscaba, quería sol todo el tiempo. Estaba en Santa Eulalia y vi una oficina inmobiliaria improvisada, y en el mitad de la ventana había una oferta especial de una finca abandonada. Un chico de la oficina me llevó y allí estaba, un edificio de 500 años de antigüedad. Nadie había vivido allí desde hacía 15 años y yo quería hacer un trato al respecto, a pesar de que necesitaba gran cantidad de trabajo para ponerla al día, así que conseguí que el agente inmobiliario volviera con el propietario y descubriera cual era su precio mas bajo. Hice una oferta, menos mal que la aceptó, y me puse a trabajar. La cantidad de trabajo que necesitaba este sitio era inmenso. 2. La 40ª fiesta de cumpleaños de Freddie Mercury celebrada en Pikes el 5 de septiembre de 1987 ha sido descrita como “el ejemplo más increíble de exceso que la isla mediterránea haya visto jamás”. Es la fiesta a la que todos desearían haber asistido. ¿Cuán excesivo fue? Fue verdaderamente una fiesta de excesos, había de todo, teníamos bandas, gente guapa y música selecta gracias a Freddie. Le dije que no le defraudaría y que no le quería de una manera sexual, pero que como individuo era el hombre más fascinante y con más talento que conocí jamás, y haría todo lo que estuviera en mi mano para que fuera la mejor fiesta. Lo hice, fue la mejor y todavía se recuerda así. Como dije, fueron muchos años de trabajo duro para construir Pikes, y cuando finalmente se puso en marcha, apareció un hombre preguntando por el jefe. Dije: “Yo soy el jefe” y él dijo: “¿quién es el verdadero jefe?”, Le respondí, “¿a quién estás buscando?” Y él dijo, “a Tony Pikes”, y yo respondí “soy Tony Pikes”. ¿qué esperabas que llevase puesto un maldito smoking con pajarita? ¿Quién eres tú? ¿Qué es lo que quieres? “Me dijo, “que soy Freddie Mercury.” Le dije: “Nunca he oído hablar de Freddie Mercury.” Él me dijo, “¡eres un tipo bastante extraño!”. Y dije, “¡tú aparentemente tienes la misma reputación que yo!”’ Y así fue como comenzó una bonita amistad. Cuando llegó el momento de organizar su 40 cumpleaños en Pikes, Freddie quería una réplica de la catedral de la Sagrada Familia en Barcelona, hecha en la misma ciudad y traída en jet privado el día de su cumpleaños. Sin embargo, recibí una llamada de alguien que decía “¡Tony hay una emergencia, el pastel está jodido!” El avión hizo un mal aterrizaje y cuando abrieron la puerta de carga la tarta se cayó a pedazos. Le dije: “la fiesta tiene que suceder sin problemas, así que hablé con mi chef y le dije que tenía que hacer el pastel”. Él dijo, “¿qué tipo de tarta?” Y yo dije, “un puto gran pastel, hay 300 invitados”, así que él comenzó a fabricar un enorme bizcocho. Cuando estuvo listo, cuatro hombres la llevaron a la terraza, con las letras de la canción de Freddie y Montserrat Caballé: “Barcelona” en letras de chocolate por encima. No se permitieron cámaras en la fiesta, pero logré colar una en mi bolsillo una e hice una foto. ¡Entonces los cuatro hombres agarraron a mi secretaria Penny y la lanzaron por el aire y ella aterrizó en el medio del pastel con su vestido nuevo de seda! ¡Todos se echaron a reír,fue una anécdota muy divertida de la fiesta! ¡No estoy seguro de dónde está la foto, pero fue jodidamente graciosa! Le prometí a Freddie que sería la fiesta más memorable de la historia, que permanecería en la memoria mucho después de que hubiera pasado. Entonces aún no sabía que tenía SIDA. 3. Como la mayoría de la gente sabe, la canción de Wham!, Club Tropicana fue grabada allí, se llevó tan bien con la banda que le pidieron que interpretara un pequeño papel en el video, una vez más demostrando lo encantador que es usted, ¿siempre ha sido así? Desafortunadamente sí! No me criaron encantador, ¡pero sí amo a las mujeres! ¡Amo y respeto a las mujeres! Hay ciertas adicciones en el mundo, puedes ser un drogadicto o un adicto al alcohol, no quiero ser nada de eso, soy una adicto a las mujeres, siempre pongo mis brazos alrededor de una chica guapa y digo: Soy amable contigo, pero no estoy siendo amable contigo como persona, lo estoy siendo porque quiero quitarte las bragas y hacerte el amor. Con Club Tropicana, no había nada planificado, estaba trabajando como un esclavo en Pikes y un tipo vino y me dijo “soy Simon Napier Bell, y trabajo con una agencia publicitaria que busca locales para rodar videos para las próximas estrellas del rock y el pop, ¡estoy llevando a un nuevo dúo llamado Wham! Han tenido un éxito llamado Bad Boys, que les a hecho famosos, necesitan un lugar para hacer un video llamado Club Tropicana y pensé en Pikes. Y dijo: “Hay una parte de la canción que dice que las bebidas son gratis, ¡aunque eres famoso por tus altos precios!”. Le dije,” eso es una chorrada, no son altos, la gente paga por pasar un buen rato aquí y están dispuestos a pagar “. 4. Uno de mis lugares favoritos en el Hotel Pikes es la recepción, me encanta ver sus fotos con las celebridades que han pasado por estas puertas. El hotel sigue siendo uno de los sitios favoritos en Ibiza para los famosos, que es lo que tiene en comparación con otros lugares de Ibiza?
La razón es que está construida con mi propio amor, reparto paz e igualdad, no soy un racista o un político, estoy dejando claro mi desacuerdo con la manera que el mundo da la bienvenida a cualquiera. A mí no me importa el dinero, ni la orientación sexual ni nada. ¡Es la gente que se queda en Pikes la que hace único a Pikes!
1. Hi Tony, the book about your incredible life, Mr Pikes, is out now on sale. As we know your name is forever linked with the legendary Pikes Hotel How did you come across the abandoned ‘finca’? In the 70’s I was looking for a place with fresh air! All the apartments that were being built didn’t have any sun, the estate agent said, “Look Mr Pike if you sit on this terrace from 2 – 4 in the afternoon you’ll get sun”. That’s not what I was after, I wanted complete sun all the time. I was in Santa Eulalia and I saw an impromptu real estate office, and in the middle of the window was a special offer for an abandoned finca, A guy from the office drove me up there and there it was, a 500-year old building. In Spain a ‘finca’ is a farm estate with all the surrounding land. Nobody had lived in it for 15 years and I wanted to do a deal on it even though it needed an enormous amount of work doing to it, so I got the estate agent to go back to the owner and find out what his bottom price was. I made an offer which was happily accepted, and I got to work. You would not believe the amount of work it took to get that place into shape, it was immense. 2. Freddie Mercury’s 40th birthday party held at Pikes on 5th September 1987 has been described as “the most incredible example of excess the Mediterranean island has ever seen”. It’s THE party that everyone wishes they had attended. Just how excessive was it? It was truly excessive, it had everything: bands, beautiful people and excellent music, all because of Freddie. I told Freddie I wouldn’t let him down and that I love him, not in a sexual way but as an individual, I said “you’re the most fascinating, talented man I’ve ever met in my life and I’ll do everything in my power to make it the best”. I did that, it was the best and it is still remembered as the best. As I said it took me many years of slogging away to build Pikes, and when it was finally up and running a man turns up asking for the boss. I said, “I’m the boss” and he said, “ who’s the real boss?” I replied, “who are you looking for’” and he said, “Tony Pikes”, and I replied “I’m Tony Pikes, what do you expect that I’d be in a fucking lounge suit with a bow tie! Who are you, what do you want?” He said I’m Freddie Mercury” I said, “I’ve never heard of Freddie Mercury” He said, “you’re quite a strange fellow!” And I said, “you’ve apparently got the same kind of reputation yourself!” And that’s how a beautiful friendship started. When it came round to organising his 40th birthday at Pikes, Freddie wanted a replica cake of the Sagrada Familia cathedral in Barcelona, made in the same city and brought over by private jet the day of his birthday, However I got a call from someone say, “Tony there’s been an emergency, the cake is fucked!” The jet made a bad landing and when they opened the cargo door a huge pile of cake goo fell out. I said, “the party can’t go without a hitch, so I met my chef and said that you have to make the cake”. He said, “what kind of cake?” and I said, “a big fucking one, there are 300 guests”, so he got on with making a huge sponge cake. When it was ready four men carried it up to the terrace, with the lyrics of Freddie and Montserrat Caballe’s song “Barcelona” on top in chocolate piping. No cameras were allowed at the party, but I managed to sneak one in my pocket and took a photo of it. Then the four men grabbed my secretary Penny and threw her up in the air and she landed in the middle of the cake with her new silk dress! Everyone burst out laughing, a very amusing anecdote of the party! Not sure where the photo is but it was bloody funny! I promised Freddie that it would be the most memorable party ever, one that will live on in the memory long after you’ve gone. Little did I know he had AIDS. 3. As most people know, Wham’s song, Club Tropicana was filmed there, you got on so well with the band that they asked you to play a small part in the video, once again showing how charming you are, have you always been this way? Unfortunately yes! I wasn’t brought up charming, but I do love the ladies! I do love and respect women! There are certain addictions in the world, you can be a drug addict or and alcohol addict, I don’t want to be anything of those things, I’m a woman addict, I always put my arms around a pretty girl and say I’m being nice to you but I’m not being nice to you as person, but I’m being nice because I want to get in your knickers and make love to you. Anyway, with Club Tropicana, I didn’t plan it, I was slaving away at Pikes and this guy came and said “I’m Simon Napier Bell, I’m a location scout and I work for a publicity company and we work with upcoming rock and pop stars, I’m handling a new duo called Wham! They’ve had one hit called Bad Boys that’s made them famous, they need a place to make a video called Club Tropicana and I thought of Pikes”. He continued “There’s a line in the song which says that drinks are free. even though you are renowned for your high prices!” I told him, “that’s bollocks they aren’t high, people pay for having a good time here and are prepared to pay”. 4. One of my favourite places in Pikes Hotel is the reception, I love looking at the photos of yourself with the celebrities that have passed through the doors. The hotel is still one of the top Ibiza haunts for the famous to hangout, what makes it so special in comparison to other Ibiza venues? The reason is it’s built with my own love, I’m selling peace and equality I’m not a racist or a politician, I’m stating my disapproval at the way the world is by making everyone welcome. I don’t care about money, sexual orientation or anything. Pikes is unique because of the people who stay there!
