Let’s Go, Bilbao BBK Live

¿Qué fue antes, el vasco o la exageración?. A pesar de encontrarnos ante una pregunta tan antigua como los dientes de leche de Jordi Hurtado, la comunidad científica nunca ha sido capaz de ponerse de acuerdo en este asunto. Sin embargo, sí que parece existir un cuórum total a la hora de establecer el kilómetro cero del hiperbolismo euskaldun, y ese lugar no es otro que Bilbao. by Pablo Burgués

Existen innumerables datos empíricos que avalan esta teoría, como por ejemplo el archiconocido suceso que tuvo lugar en una administración de lotería situada en los aledaños del estadio de San Mamés. Hasta allí acudió un señor con la noble intención de comprobar un boleto que había comprado el fin de semana anterior en Castro Urdiales (un pequeño pueblo a las afueras de Bilbo). La amable dependienta metió el décimo en la máquina y entre gritos y aplausos comunicó al caballero que su número estaba premiado con la friolera de 837 millones de euros. Lejos de alegrarse, el aguerrido bilbaino se encogió de hombros y dijo: “Bahhh, lo jugado”.

Pues bien, la última gran demostración del superlativo ADN vasco se llama Bilbao BBK Live, una auténtica bestialidad de festival de música al pil-pil por el que ya han desfilado algunas de las bandas más importantes de la historia del rock (lo que traducido al vasco sería “unos txavales que están empezando oye”): Guns N’ Roses, Pearl Jam, Coldplay, Muse, Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Radiohead, Iron Maiden, The Police, The black Crows, Jane’s Addiction, R.E.M., Arcade Fire, Depeche Mode,

The Black Keys, The Killers... Vamos, que los únicos grandes que aún no han tocado en este festi son Elvis y Jimi Hendrix. Pero que no cunda el pánico, la organización ya está trabajando en ello.

Con semejante historial a sus espaldas, Alfonso Santiago (director del BBK LIVE) cada año lo tiene más jodido para encontrar un cabeza de cartel que sorprenda a su público. Para lograrlo, en esta edición se pusieron sobre la mesa dos opciones la mar de sencillitas. La opción “A” era juntar sobre el mismo escenario y el mismo día a Damon Albarn (Blur) y a Noel Gallagher (Oasis). La opción “B”, bastante menos salvaje y más razonable, consistía en organizar una batalla de Air-Guitar en el barro entre Chuck Norris y Kim Jong-un. Esta segunda opción se vino abajo tras comprobar que el líder supremo norcoreano está de comunión el fin de semana del festival, así pues no hubo más remedio que optar por la primera opción.

Bilbao, situated in the north of Spain, is one of the bastions of the Spanish festival scene, precisely for the Bilbao BBK festival held each July on the outskirts of the city. This famous place is renowned for its “pintxos”, the Bilbao to Portsmouth ferry, the Guggenheim museum (the one with the mega gigantic dog made of flowers and the Butcher of Bilbao (football fans of a certain age know who I’m talking about, and he wasn’t a real butcher…)

Killers... Let’s be honest, the biggest artists that haven’t played here are Elvis Presley and Jimi Hendrix. However, don’t worry, the event organisers are working on these last two.

With such a history of rock’n’roll royalty playing at his festival, Alfonso Santiago (BBK Live director) has the mother of all annual ball aches trying to find a headliner that will surprise his audience. For this year’s festival he had two options. Option A: get Damon Albarn from Blur and Noel Gallagher from Oasis together on stage. Option B: (a lot less crazy and a hell of a lot more reasonable) organise an air guitar battle between Chuck Norris and Kim Jong-un while wrestling in the mud. The second option fell apart after the North Korean supreme leader phoned to say he was getting baptised on the same weekend as the festival, so there was nothing to do but go for Option A.

So my little muckers, get yer tickets before they run out as you wouldn’t wanna miss this century’s most awaited rock-off: Gorillaz vs Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds (think of King Kong vs the planes on the Empire State, will the ape win out this time?). As a bonus treat there are also some other bands you may have heard of: The Chemical Brothers, Florence + The Machine, Alt-J, The XX…
