Loquillo’s Suite

The Spanish rock ‘n’ roll artist has recently had a room dedicated to his career at Dorado Hotel in Ibiza, and he flew to Ibiza to perform at a private concert to close the successful second season of Dorado Live Shows and Rock Nights.

Su altísima figura – metro noventa y cinco – salió al escenario del hotel Santos. Enfundado en un traje azabache observó al público a través de sus gafas de sol. La noche era fresa pero no fría y el mar se mecía a pocos metros de distancia, muriendo en la orilla de Platja d’en Bossa. Quizás como homenaje al lugar donde se vivió este exclusivo concierto (solamente entraron 200 invitados, casi todos ibicencos relacionados de alguna manera con el show business musical de la isla: bandas locales, promotores, productores o fieles del rock and roll en directo), las guitarras de Josu García e Igor Paskual comenzaron a desgranar los primeros compases de El rompeolas. “Empieza fuerte”, se escuchó decir a alguien entre el público y, entre caladas y sonrisas, la voz ronca del cantante, que no era otro que Loquillo, empezó a cantar: “Lunes, martes, miércoles, mirando hacia el mar…”

La vida de varias generaciones de españoles puede explicarse a través de los versos que ha entonado o recitado la voz ronca de José María Sanz, orgulloso charnego de Barcelona que a mediados de los setenta, en plena adolescencia y en plena transición, decidió desafiar al mundo levantándose el flequillo. Cuarenta años después, Loquillo, el nombre de guerra con el que ha entrado en la historia contemporánea de la música española, sigue derrochando actitud, ahora desde su cuartel general de San Sebastián, la ciudad en la que vive desde hace años. En estas cuatro décadas lo ha sido todo: rockero de chupa de cuero, crooner de elegancia nocturna, rescatador de poetas olvidados…Liderando bandas o en solitario, el Loco se ha dejado el alma en miles de escenarios y nunca se ha mordido la lengua. ¿Pero qué le trajo hacia Ibiza? El exclusivo recital (que se vivió el pasado 6 de octubre y sirvió para cerrar la temporada de los Dorado Live Shows, rematando la fiesta con una fiesta de Rock Nights que el propio Loquillo no se quiso perder y que se prolongó hasta el amanecer) fue la guinda de su visita.

El Loco, realmente, aterrizó en la isla para recibir un homenaje en forma de suite. El hotel Dorado (perteneciente a Concept Hotel Group) decidió hace meses prepararle una sorpresa: personalizaría una de sus catorce habitaciones – la suite 408, concretamente – con memorabilia de este rockero híbrido que dentro de poco celebrará cuarenta años de carrera. “Los días que compartió con nosotros en Ibiza han sido inolvidables y él, que es un tío cultísimo, ha demostrado el gran carisma que tiene como artista y como persona”, explica Diego Calvo, propietario de Concept Hotel Group, la cadena que posee Dorado, Tropicana y Santos. Loquillo se paseó por una estancia a la que no le faltó ningún detalle. La inauguró poco antes de su actuación en acústico, donde no faltaron temas como El hombre de negro, Fuerte, feo y formal o Cruzando el paraíso, y que acabó con el público cantando a coro Cadillac solitario. Calvo es un gran admirador de Loquillo y, gracias a su buen amigo Javier Ajenjo, director del Sonorama, pudo llevar a cabo el sueño de invitar a Loquillo a la inauguración de su suite. De hecho, como señala Calvo, la parada ibicenca, fue un alto en el camino, una especie de respiro en medio de esta gira de dos años en la que se ha embarcado el músico y que culminó el próximo 15 de diciembre actuando en el WiZink Center de Madrid, la misma ciudad donde hace algo más de un año reventaba Las Ventas en un histórico concierto.

A la suite del Loco no le falta ningún detalle gracias a los diseños que ha hecho el artista gráfico Marcos Torres para la ocasión. Al abrir la puerta el single Rock and Roll Star recibe a los huéspedes girando en el tocadiscos. Ese trabajo, el primero que grabó la voz de Loquillo, ha sido el elegido por la dirección artística de Concept para incluirlo, en calidad de disco honorífico, al resto de discos de oro que bautizan el resto de suites, donde no faltan los trabajos más memorables de Bowie, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles o The Doors. La música de este tema inolvidable ambienta un espacio en el que no falta una taza serigrafiada con un motivo diseñado exclusivamente para el padrino de la suite o los versos iniciales, precisamente, de su primer himno (has tenido suerte de llegarme a conocer / creo que a nadie le gusta el nacer para perder) adornando una de las paredes. En el espejo del baño aparece desafiante la imagen del pájaro que acompaña al alter ego del artista desde que Epi, su amigo de viejas andanzas baloncestísticas, le bautizara con su conocido sobrenombre. En otro espejo, situado en el cabecero de la cama, aparece la serigrafía que perfila la silueta de Loquillo, que no dudó en dejarse fotografiar por Juan Pérez-Fajardo sentado en el inmenso lecho de la suite.

La memorabilia la completan tres piezas muy especiales: una camiseta conmemorativa del celebrado concierto que dio Loquillo en la sala Zeleste de Barcelona (la actual Razzmatazz) allá por 1988, una fotografía original del cantante en el concierto de Las Ventas del año pasado realizada por Juan Fajardo, espectáculo que ha supuesto un hito en su carrera, y una chaqueta cedida por el propio artista, una de las cuatro que lució en su gran show madrileño, enclavado en la gira Salud y Rock and Roll. The first thing you notice is that he’s extremely tall at 1,95m. He strides out on the stage of Santos Hotel. Dressed in a jet-black suit he observes the audience through his sunglasses. The night is cool, but not cold and the sea breaks onto the Playa d’en Bossa beach a few metres away. There are 200 guests, almost all of them Ibicencos related in some way to the island’s musical show business: local bands, promoters, producers or live rock ‘n’ roll fans. The lives of several generations of Spaniards can be explained through the verses that have been intoned or recited by the husky voice of Jose Maria Sanz, proud resident of Barcelona. When he was an adolescence in the middle of the 70s, during the midst of the Spanish transition from dictatorship to democracy, decided to challenge the world by growing a quiff. Forty years later, Loquillo, the nom de guerra with which he has entered the history of Spanish contemporary music, is still full of attitude, now based in his San Sebastian headquarters, where he has lived for many years. These four decades have seen him become a biker jacket rock ‘n’ roller, nocturnal crooner, rescuer of forgotten poets, band leader and a solo artist. El Loco has done it all on thousands of stages. But what brought him to Ibiza? The answer is his exclusive concert which closed the Dorado Live Shows season on the 6th October, finishing the evening with a party at Rock Nights that Loquillo himself attended and which continued until the early morn.

El Loco, has also arrived in Ibiza to receive a tribute in the form of a suite. Dorado Hotel decided some months ago to prepare a special surprise; personalising one of its fourteen rooms, Suite 408 specifically, with memorabilia from this rock ‘n’ roll star, who will soon celebrate his 40th anniversary on the road. “The time he shared with us in Ibiza was unforgettable, and as a cult figure, he demonstrated the great charisma that he has as an artist and as a person, “explained Diego Calvo, owner of Concept Hotel Group, the chain which owns Dorado, Tropicana and Santos Hotels. Loquillo’s stay didn’t lack any details. He inaugurated the room shortly before his acoustic concert, where there was no shortage of classics such as El Hombre de negro (The Man In Black), Feo, Fuerte y Formal (Ugly, Strong & Formal) or Cruzando el paraiso (Crossing Paradise), ending with the crowd singing acapella to Cadillac solitario (Solitary Cadillac). Diego is a great admirer of Loquillo and, thanks to his good friend Javier Ajenjo, director of the Sonorama Festival, was able to achieve his dream of inviting Loquillo to the inauguration of his suite. In fact, as Diego points out, this visit to Ibiza is a mini break and a kind of respite from the middle of Loquillo’s two-year tour on which the musician has embarked, culminating on the 15th December in the WiZink Center in Madrid, the same city where a little over a year ago he performed a historic concert in Las Ventas Bullring.

El Loco’s was designed by the graphic artist Marcos Torres and is full of interesting details. When you open the suite’s door, the single ‘Rock and Roll Star’ welcomes guests into the room as it automatically drops on the turntable. This single, the first one that Loquillo recorded, was chosen by Concept as the honorary record that will join the rest of gold records that baptise the other suites in the hotel, including classics from Bowie, The Stones, The Beatles and The Doors. There is a silkscreened cup and a motif designed exclusively for Loquillo with the opening verses of his song (you’ve been lucky to get to know me / I think nobody likes to be born to lose) decorating one of the walls. In the bathroom mirror, the image of the bird which accompanies the alter ego of the artist features, since Epi, his friend of old basketball adventures, baptised him with his well-known stage name. In another mirror, situated above the bed’s headboard, there is a huge silkscreen image of the artist’s silhouette from a famous Juan Pérez Fajardo photo.

The room’s memorabilia is completed with three very special pieces. A commemorative t-shirt from Loquillo’s epic concert in the Zeleste Club in Barcelona (now the Razzmatazz club) in 1988, an original photo by Juan Fajardo of the singer in the Las Ventas concert last year, which was one of the high points of his career, and a jacket lent by the artist himself, one of four that he wore in that legendary Madrid concert, from his Salud y Rock and Roll tour.
