50 años adicto a la música

Dieter Sroka es un publicista, diseñador gráfico y editor de la IbizArt Guide. Nacido en el pueblo de Hamelín (Alemania) en el 1957, tiene claro que sus dos grandes pasiones son el arte y la música. A lo largo de su vida, ha recorrido todo el mundo para ver a los mejores músicos y cuenta con una colección de más de 4.000 discos. Ahora, y desde hace 28 años, vive en Ibiza junto a su mujer y sus dos hijos, también amantes de la buena música.

1. Buenas tardes Dieter. Cuéntanos, ¿desde hace cuántos años llevas metido en el mundo de la música?

Bueno, ahora tengo 61 y empecé comprando mis primeros discos con 11 años, así que unos 50 años. Bastante tiempo y bastante dinero gastado en este ¡vicio! (risas).

2. ¿Recuerdas el primer disco que tuviste en tus manos?

Sí, creo que fue de The Equals - Viva Bobby Joe. Pero en las mismas semanas me compré varios más, como Bee Gees, The Beatles, Dave Clark Five, Spencer Davis Group, The Animals, The Kinks...hay bastantes. ¡Aquí empezó el vicio!

3. Tú eres alemán, aunque ya llevas casi 30 años viviendo en España, ¿En qué país dirías que hay más interés por la musica y cómo crees que ha evolucionado estos años?

Antes pensaba que Alemania, al tener el doble de habitantes que España y al haber muchos coleccionistas y bastantes conciertos, pero luego he visto que en España el mercado es bastante amplio teniendo también Latino América y muchos aficionados. Por lo que diría que ahora mismo España está igual o casi más que Alemania en cuanto a música. Además en España los grupos nacionales superan con creces a los alemanes. Por eso creo que España tiene una buena historia en cuanto a música. Y he llegado a conocer aquí a muchos coleccionistas locos como yo, ¡sobretodo por los Rolling Stones! (risas)

4. Tienes vinilos, CD’s, LP’s, singles y DVD’s de prácticamente todos los grupos desde los años 60 hasta la actualidad. Algunos son auténticas joyas, ¿cuáles son tus preferidos?

Es una pregunta un poco difícil, ya que a mí me gustan todos los estilos que sean buena música, desde pop-rock de los años 60 hasta los americanos de los 70, todas las variaciones de rock, blues, soul, rythem & blues, jazz, singer song writer. Mi espectrum es muy grande...Lo que no me gusta es el rap.

5. Y hablando más en concreto, ¿cuál es tu ránking del 10 al 1 de grupos preferidos?

¿¿Solo diez?? (risas).

10 - Pink Floyd, 9 - The Beatles, 8 - Eagles, 7 - Rory Gallagher, 6 - Steely Dan, 5 - The Doors, 4 - Led Zeppelin, 3 - David Bowie, 2 - Neil Young (Crosby, Stills, Nash + Young), 1 - Rolling Stones (especialmente Keith Richards, pero también todos los discos en solitario de Mick Jagger, Ron Wood, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman...todos) Como solo pueden ser 10, seré listo y cogeré un montón de dobles, ¡para que así tenga casi 20! La mayoría serían conciertos.

7. ¿Y qué grupos no quieres ni regalado en tu colección?

Todos los que tienen en su lírica textos fascistas y racistas, como son en Alemania Die Böhse Onkelz. En Inglaterra existen por ejemplo Morrissey...Todo eso no lo quiero cerca, tampoco el rap ni el reggaetón, en los que denigran sexualmente a las mujeres. Aparte, tampoco tengo casi música heavy metal y sus derivados, no me va ese rollo.

8. Creciste en la edad dorada de la música, por lo que tendrás mil anécdotas para contar. ¿Cuál es la que más cariño le tienes?.

Tengo varias de conciertos, pero me quedo en especial con una, que fue una Jack Daniels Backstage Party con Bon Jovi. Yo tuve mi agencia de publicidad en Hanóver y trabajé con Polygram y celebramos la fabricación del millón de CD’s. Y en los años 80 cuando muchos grupos iban a Hanóver para ellos era algo bonito visitar la fábrica donde se hacían las copias. Yo tenía una amiga que trabajaba en márqueting en la empresa y me invitó a un concierto esa misma noche de Bon Jovi en Hanóver, a ella no le gustaba mucho la música rock así que acepté sin dudarlo. Eran entradas con acceso al backstage y la fiesta de Jack Daniels, y he de decir que eso fue de verdad una auténtica fiesta de Rock and Roll, duró hasta el mediodía del día siguiente (risas). En aquel entonces Bon Jovi no era tan conocido como ahora. De los Rolling Stones también podría contar alguna que otra cosa!

Sí, sobre todo de los Rolling Stones tengo muchos fanzine, discos firmados por Bill Wyman y el resto de miembros, discos de oro como de David Bowie, John Lennon...ediciones limitadas, discos de promoción, discos pirata... algunos tienen un valor de más de 1.000€, un montón de revistas de música, libros, camisetas firmadas, guitarras firmadas...en general mucho merchandising, y es que esto es a día de hoy el negocio de muchos grupos. ¡Lo bueno es que no tengo más espacio en casa y así no tengo que gastar mucho más dinero! (risas).

10. Me han dicho que este verano harás alguna que otra exposición en el Dorado Ibiza. Cuéntanos un poco.

Sí, me lo ofreció Diego Calvo y me gustó la idea. Que fueran sobre todo vinilos especiales dentro de mi colección, así que haremos una pequeña selección de las portadas más molonas. Tengo muchos que son gimmix covers, que son muy especiales. Me gustaría recalcar el gran trabajo de los diseñadores gráficos que antiguamente creaban portadas increíbles, para mí es verdadero arte. Si todo sale bien, el año que viene podríamos continuar con esto. Además, el mismo día de la exposición pincharé unos temas rockeros, varios no tan conocidos, pero bastante buenos.

11. Gracias por concedernos tu tiempo y esperamos verte por el Rock Nights!

1. Good afternoon, Dieter. Tell us, how many years have you been in the music world?

Well, now I’m 61 and I began buying my first records when I was 11, so that’s 50 years now. Quite a long time and much money being spent on this vice! (laughs).

2. Do you remember the first record you had?

Yes, I think it was one of The Equals - Viva Bobby Joe. But that same week I bought some other records, such as Bee Gees, The Beatles, Dave Clark Five, Spencer Davis Group, The Animals, The Kinks… many records. The vice began there!

3. You are German, though you’ve been almost 30 years living in Spain, where would you say there is more interest in music and how do you think this has evolved throughout these years?

Before I though it was Germany, because it has double the amount of citizens than Spain, and there are many collectors and quite a number of concerts, but then I’ve realized that in Spain the market is quite extensive, also considering Latin America and many fans.+ So I would say that right now Spain is equal or even beyond Germany in terms of music. Moreover, in Spain the national bands far exceed the German ones. Thus I believe that Spain has a good history regarding music. And here I’ve even met many crazy collectors as me, above all fans of Rolling Stones! (laughs).

4. You have vinyl records, CD’s, albums, singles and DVDs by almost all the bands since the 60s to present. Some of them are true gems, which are your favourite ones?

This is somehow a difficult question, because I like all styles of good music, from pop-rock of the 60s to the American styles of the 70s, all variations of rock, blues, soul, rythm & blues, jazz, singer song writer. My spectrum is very big... What I don’t like is rap.

5. And speaking more specifically, which would be your ranking of favourite bands from 10 to 1?

Dieter Sroka is a publicist, graphic designer and editor of IbizArt Guide. Born in Hamelin (Germany), in 1957, for him it’s clear that his two big passions are art and music. Throughout his life, he has travelled all around the world to meet the best musicians and has a collection of over 4.000 music discs. Currently, for the last 28 years, he lives in Ibiza with his wife and their two sons, also lovers of good music.

6. The 10 best records you would take to a desert island are…?

As they’re only 10, I’ll be clever and I’ll choose a lot of double records, so I’ll have almost 20! Most of them would be concerts.

7. And which bands wouldn’t you have even if they were a gift in your collection?

All the ones that have fascist and racist lyrics, as Die Böhse Onkelz in Germany. In United Kingdom for instance there is Morrissey… I don’t want all that close to me, neither rap nor reggaeton, which denigrate women in sexual terms. Besides, I barely have heavy metal and its variations; it’s not my kind of thing.

8. You grew up in the music golden era, so you’ll have thousands of anecdotes to tell. Which is the one you’re especially fond of?

I have several anecdotes about concerts, but I’m especially fond of one at a Jack Daniels Backstage Party with Bon Jovi. I had my advertising agency in Hannover and worked with Polygram, and we celebrated the production of one million CDs. In the 80s when a lot of bands went to Hannover it was nice for them to visit the factory where copies were made. I had a friend who worked at the marketing department of the company and she invited me to a concert the night that Bon Jovi was in Hannover. She Rock and Roll party, which lasted till next day’s didn’t like rock music very much so I accepted without hesitation. Those were tickets that allowed access to the backstage and the Jack Daniels party, and I have to say that was indeed a real Rock and Roll party, which lasted till next day’s noon (laughs). In those days Bon Jovi was not so famous as now. About Rolling Stones I would also be able to tell a few things!

9. Besides, do you also collect other objects related to music?

Yes, especially about Rolling Stones, I have many fanzines, records signed by Bill Wyman and the rest, golden discs such as by David Bowie, John Lennon… limited editions, promotion records, pirated records… some of them are worth more than 1.000€, a lot of music magazines, books, signed t-shirts, signed guitars… in general, a lot or merchandising things, because nowadays this is the business for many bands. Luckily I don’t have more room at home so I don’t have to spend much more money! (laughs). records of my collection, so we’ll prepare a small selection of the coolest covers. I have many of them that are gimmix covers, and those are very special. I’d like to highlight the great work done by the graphic designers who in the past created incredible covers. For me that’s true art. If all goes well, next year we could go on with this. Also, the same day of the exhibition I’ll deejay some rock songs, some of them not very wellknown but quite good.
